Surface wave imaging is a relatively new seismic technique that generates subsurface depth images without having to drill boreholes into the ground, and is rapidly becoming a standard tool in non-destructive geotechnical characterization. This paper presents a case study of the application of these surface wave techniques to image shallow abandoned mine workings at the Montague Gold Mines district near Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This district has numerous steeply dipping narrow vein workings from historical mining activity, and has actively subsiding and collapsing crown pillars. Due to the rugged conditions at the site and the relative narrowness of the openings (often less than 1 m), a surface seismic system was developed that had improved portability and lateral resolution over other available seismic imaging systems. Seismic surveys were conducted over two sites where independent evidence indicated the presence of shallow mine workings. At one site, a comparative gravity survey was also conducted. The seismic data was processed to generate velocity vs depth images. Overall, the velocity images show vertical zones of zero velocity in the same lateral positions where historical mapping, current subsidence and gravity surveys indicate the presence of steeply dipping workings. Further, the velocity sections are consistent with the thickness of the till cover at each site and the possible weakening of crown pillars at one of the sites.

"Colloidal silica in Key Lake’s Solvent Extraction (SX) feed solutions has presented an operational problem for the mill throughout its history. The colloidal silica stabilizes aqueous continuous emulsions, resulting in elevated solvent losses and operational downtime. Through the years, many attempts have been made to solve this problem, but no viable solutions were found. By revisiting an idea dating back to the 1979 feasibility study and re-evaluating it under current operating conditions, a practical solution was achieved. This paper discusses Key Lake’s history around colloidal silica removal, starting with coagulation using a polyethylene oxide polymer (PEO), and ending with coagulation using a polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer. The results of a mill trial using POLYSIL® RM1250 introduced at doses up to 300 ppm into the counter current decantation (CCD) circuit to clarify SX feed solutions are discussed with a focus on the benefits to SX.INTRODUCTION Colloidal silica has historically been a significant operational problem in the Key Lake mill. Silica originates from clays in the ore as well as concrete backfill intermixed with the ore resulting from the mining method used at Key Lake’s ore source, the McArthur River mine. The silica is dissolved as silicic acid into solution in the mill’s sulphuric acid leaching circuit. Once in solution, silicic acid polymerizes (Hearn, Smethurst, & Boskovic, 2016) forming a fine suspension of stable colloidal particles. These silica colloids are unaffected by flocculants and sand filtration reporting to the pregnant leach solution (PLS) as a fine turbidity in solution. Silica concentrations typically ranged from 700 to 1200 mg/L Si in the PLS fed to SX. Throughout Key Lake’s history, silica interactions in the Solvent Extraction (SX) process have made SX a mill bottleneck and a source of significant reagent costs."

Waste rock piles (WRP) are made of heterogeneous, coarse grained waste rock, with inclined layers due to segregation along the slopes and haul traffic compacted layers, creating highly contrasted hydrogeological conditions. The internal structure of the pile has a major impact on water and oxygen movement and pore water pressure distribution. In the presence of reactive minerals, this influences the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) or contaminated neutral drainage (CND) with metal leaching from the WRP. Water flow and distribution may also affect slope stability, particularly following major infiltration events (rain/snow melts).The prediction and interpretation of water distribution in WRP is a challenging problem. Numerous numerical investigations of short and long term forecasts have been conducted, and many of these were found of limited reliability. The shortcomings of existing approaches are typically due to difficulties in representing preferential flow processes in macropores. Such phenomena are in fact often neglected in the assessment of water flow in WRP because these are unattainable with the classical porous media approach typically used in this field. This paper focuses on the use of modeling techniques originally designed for massive fractured rock media to simulate flow in WRP. Waste rock properties used in this study are retrieved from large scale laboratory permeability and water retention tests and from in situ infiltration tests. The effect of WRP configurations on water flow into potentially reactive zones is examined with the numerical 3D fully-integrated surface/subsurface, variably saturated flow model HydroGeoSphere. Material properties retrieved from the laboratory tests are represented by means of stochastic facies distribution generated within a probability framework. Modelled soil water contents and hydraulic head distributions, as well as fluxes within a simple waste rock pile, with compacted layers, are compared with results retrieved from simulations based on the classical equivalent porous medium approach. Results indicate significantly increased flow towards the looser waste rock zone by considering heterogeneous material distribution, causing weak or absent capillary barriers and preferential flow paths. Practical implications for the design of waste rock piles are also discussed.

The point of zero charge (PZC) of electrokinetically anisotropic minerals (chlorite and serpentine) was determined using the Mular-Roberts (M-R) titration technique, and compared to isoelectric point (IEP) obtained from electrophoretic mobility measurements. To validate the M-R technique, the point of zero charge and isoelectric point of two isotropic minerals (alumina and silica) were shown to be comparable. For serpentine and chlorite, respectively the PZC was found at pH 4.3 and 4.6, while the IEP occurred at pH 3.2 and <3. Settling tests showed that the maximum settling rate, which corresponds to aggregated particles, for chlorite was around pH 3, i.e., close to the IEP; lizardite did not show a conclusive maximum.

Away back in the eighties of the last century, when Sir Charles, then Doctor, Tupper, was not only a prominent but a dominant figure in the political life of Nova Scotia, his opponents brought the railing accusation against him that he was the foremost of egotists because of his frequent use of the personal pronoun. I heard Tupper speak and had no sympathy with the railers, because I could not well see how the pronoun could be dispensed with without laying himself open to a charge of affectation. I shall make reference in what follows to incidents in which I have taken part, and shall be at no pains to dispense with the pronoun, even though thereby I lay my-self open to the charge of being a pupil of the deceased states-man. EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE ORGANIZATION OF THE PROVINCIAL WORKMEN&apos;S ASSOCIATION The Springhill Mining Company began development work at Springhill in the early seventies of last century. So vigorously was the work prosecuted that in 18 7 4 two slopes, the east and the west, were in active operation, with a considerable. output, the east slope on occasional days producing 800 tons. The President of the Company, the late Senator McFarlane, was a Nova Scotian, the other directors were mainly merchants from St. John, N.B. From the first the enterprise was an .astonishing success, due in the greatest part to its geographical position, and in large part to the untiring vigilance of the directors, a majority of whom visited the collieries at short intervals, thereby keeping the manager, much of the time, on tenter hooks.

Mr. B. Neilly: A week or so ago the Secretary was good enough to forward me an advance copy of this paper by Mr. Logan and it was suggested that I comment on it at this meeting. At that time I was not very certain that I would be here, so I committed my thoughts to paper. As a matter of courtesy to Mr. Logan, I sent him a copy of my proposed remarks and I would like to give you just what I sent to him. Appreciating fully Mr. Logan&apos;s ability and many sources of information, one naturally hesitates to question anything seriously set forth as his considered opinion. Neither does one of my political stripe like to accuse him of being too &apos;conservative.? However, in places his paper reminds me of another general manager of a Canadian bank. While I was still Secretary of the Ontario Mining Association, this general manager wrote asking for our forecast on the current year&apos;s mineral production, stating that he proposed to refer to such production figures in his annual address to his shareholders. The request was considered very complimentary to the Ontario Mining Association and, in my opinion, justified a great deal of serious study and effort. Finally, the estimate was prepared and forwarded, showing a modest increase over the previous year&apos;s total. Picture our surprise and chagrin on reading his address to find that he predicted not an increase but, if you please, a decline of over $10,000,000. Before I cooled off I wrote asking the basis of such a prediction and got a reply to the effect that men in his position had to be ultra conservative in picturing the future.

"Migmatite from the Skalka region (Czech Republic) was chosen as the experimental rock material. It has macroscopically visible plane parallel structure (foliation). The foliation was caused mainly by biotite grains arrangement. The cylindrical samples of migmatite with subhorizontal, subvertical and oblique foliation were uniaxially loaded up to the failure. Network of 8 broad band sensors was employed for acoustic emission monitoring and ultrasonic sounding. A grid search method with anisotropic velocity model was used for AE hypocenters localization. The source types of successfully localized events were determined from the average first arrival amplitude. Structural anisotropy of tested rock material caused the anisotropy of its mechanical properties (peak strength, Young’s modulus) as well as a different way of fracturing process in dependence on the angle between axial stress and foliation plane. The combination of splitting, shearing and sliding was found to control the fracturing of sample with subhorizontal foliation. The shearing and sliding was dominant in fracturing of samples with oblique foliation. With greater dip of foliation, the role of sliding increased at the expense of shearing. Due to the favorably oriented system of microcracks already present, the shearing and splitting was at the same level during fracturing of the sample with subvertical foliation before nucleation began.INTRODUCTIONThe process of failure of low porosity rocks depends on their mechanical properties and actual stress and temperature condition. At the low pressure and low temperature, the most common way is brittle failure, which is a progressive process requiring the initiation, growth and coalescence of cracks (Lockner, 1993). Stress strain behavior of low porosity crystalline rocks, during the laboratory compression experiments, is divided into four characteristic stages: crack closure, elastic region, stable crack growth and unstable crack growth which leads to the brittle failure, Brace et al. (1966) , Bieniawski (1967), Lajtai (1974), Cai et al. (2004), Nicksiar and Martin, 2012 and 2013.The fracturing process of stressed rock begins with the crack initiation (sci), which for low porosity rocks occurs approximately at 40-50% of peak strength (sp) (Cai et al., 2004; Nicksiar and Martin, 2013). After the sci, the dilatancy begins and stable crack growth follows up to the crack damage threshold (scd), which is approximately at 80% of sp (Cai et al., 2004). After crossing the crack damage level, there is an unstable crack growth accompanied with nucleation of fault plane (sn) at 97-100% of sp. (Rao et al., 2011). The stress drop accompanied with formation of macro scale shear failure plane follows after peak stress is crossed."

IN 1932, Horace Onyett at Oroville, California, built a practical floating washing plant along the general lines as now known, using a 24 in. by 12 ft. trammel; it was fed with a ½ yard dragline bucket, rated then at 200 yards per day. Onyett dubbed his plant a &apos;Doodlebug&apos; which name has clung to this type of operation ever since. In general, the &apos;Doodlebug&apos; dredge is the outgrowth of the depression of 1929, wherein many dirt contractors had surplus idle equipment and a few of them ventured to use it for placer mining. Many such plants were impractical and poorly designed and adapted often to locations not suited to the purpose. However out of the general idea came refinements until today dragline dredging has a very definite place in the gold production of the world. Many of the early operators, being mainly contractors without mining experience or technical knowledge of gold saving, geology, or mechanical design, naturally went through stages of trial and error until a workable unit became standard practice. Credit should be given Bodenson Iron Works of San Francisco, who did a notable job of pioneering and building of floating washing plants; also, to Lord and Bishop, contractors of Sacramento, who were among the early operators, and to several others who built and rebuilt their plants until the weak spots were strengthened to take the beating required, and yet deliver a high degree of efficiency.

The adsorption capacity of peat collected from a proposed mine development in northern Sweden has been determined using laboratory column experiments in which peat was irrigated with a simulated (acidic) waste rock dump leachate. The simulated leachate was made using a hydrogen peroxide leach of composite waste rock from the proposed mine development. The waste rock samples were composited in proportion to their predicted extractable tonnage for the mine development in order to generate a more representative leachate solution for the waste rock facility. As expected the test revealed that the peat material shows a very high affinity for attenuation with greater than 70% of Co, 90% of Ni and 95% of Cu removed from influent solutions through the majority of the tests demonstrating the potential benefits in mine water treatment. In contrast, it was found that Fe is initially released from the peat at concentrations up to 100 mg/L and can mean potential problems for the water released depending on the receiving environment. The exact mechanisms for Fe release is uncertain, though it is suspected that ion exchange / competitive desorption is responsible. Inspection of the laboratory results and drainage data from the natural peat wetland receiving drainage during overburden prestriping and mine development at the mine site are comparable, confirm the validity of the experiments, and further emphasize the potential for future use of pre-stripped peat material in managing water quality.

"The Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) brought together all of the key stakeholders in Canada&apos;s mining industry to develop a framework whereby the industry can meet the challenges that it faces into the 21st century. The WMI Accord7 which was signed at the annual Mines Ministers Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, on September 137 1994, touches all of the important issues that confront the industry, including taxation. IntroductionSeptember 13, 1994, was a historical day for Canada&apos;s mining industry. On that day, on the occasion of the annual Mines Ministers Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, the Whitehorse Mining Initiative (WMI) Accord was signed by the leaders of the five principal stakeholders in the industry: industry; government; labour; environmentalists; and aboriginals. The Accord is the culmination of two years of hard work and intense collaboration by these stakeholders. But, the Accord is not the end result. The Accord can better be described as a springboard to a prosperous future for mining in Canada.The WMI had its beginnings at the Mines Ministers Conference in Whitehorse, Yukon, in September 1992 (hence, the name of the initiative). At that time, the mining industry was well aware of the serious challenges facing the industry, including significantly increased competition for mineral investment from other mining countries, coupled with an atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding land access, environmental regulations, and taxation. The application of thickened/paste tailings for surface disposal has been practiced for many years but has recently started to gain wider international acceptance. With tailings ponds coming under increasing environmental scrutiny, there is growing momentum towards mine/tailings plans that greatly reduce the size or even eliminate tailings ponds completely. This paper provides examples from the author&apos;s own experiences of the application of thickened/paste tailings for surface disposal in different countries, under different climatic conditions and in different industries. The paper will also comment on current research initiatives and future trends.

Introduction Development of oil and gas is still centred in the Province of Alberta, much as it was when C. C. Ross read a paper on this subject three years ago at the Annual General Meeting in Montreal; but so far as gas is concerned, its early production in Saskatchewan seems now assured. The three years that have elapsed since Mr. Ross&apos; paper have witnessed a growth in the world&apos;s production of oil that has created a potential supply out of all proportion to the demand for petroleum products, and one that has resisted the most energetic efforts of the industry entirely to control. The natural result has been very much to retard the active prospecting of new structures in the Prairie Provinces with any immediate view to oil production, although the same factor has not hindered the search for gas to the same extent. One consequence has been to divert the attention of organized oil operators from wildcat drilling to more detailed geological investigation than had hitherto been customary, sometimes accompanied by test drilling with a view to the elucidation of geological structure rather than to the immediate development of production which at the present is not needed. Nevertheless, in spite of the growth of this phase of oil prospecting - which the writer would be the last not to welcome as a very real blessing and of far greater value than indiscriminate wildcat drilling in either the complex structures of the foothills or the simpler but largely concealed formations of the plains- it is most satisfactory to have to record that in these three years the growth of production both of naphtha and the heavier crude-oil has kept pace with the by no means inconsiderable growth in the production and utilization of natural gas.

"The agitator design for nickel high pressure acid leach autoclaves (HPAL) is critical with regard to the process result, i.e., the recovery rate. Further considerations during the design phase are the avoidance of acid hot spots which reduce the lifetime, due to corrosion of the wetted parts, including components manufactured from titanium. Besides the process knowledge to design HPAL autoclaves, tools such as, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) supplemented by lab testing allow the design of optimized agitation systems. This paper describes the effect that different feed point locations have on instantaneous blending of the reactants. Furthermore, experiments and CFD show where abrasion issues might occur and how to obtain information about the static and dynamic forces acting on internals. We show how simulations can be validated by lab testing to ensure that the CFD models are applied in an appropriate way.INTRODUCTIONAgitated systems in hydrometallurgical processes have to comply with multiple process tasks and in many cases have to withstand extreme operation conditions such as pressure up to 50 bar, elevated temperatures of up to 250°C and exposure to very acidic or alkaline environments and abrasive ores. The process tasks range from instantaneous mixing of reactants, homogeneous suspensions of up to 65% wt. solids with coarse and heavy particles, enhancing the solid-liquid mass transfer for leaching, dispersing large volumes of reactants (gas-liquid, liquid-liquid mass transfer) and moreover to transport generated heat e.g., from exothermic reactions through the vessel walls or internal heat exchangers if required. For economies of scale, agitator systems have reached sizes of 5000 m³ for large open leach tanks with impeller diameters of approx. 6 m, while autoclaves nowadays have exceeded 5.5 meters in diameter with a power demand for a single compartment drive between 300 - 400 kW. In parallel all process industries require a more efficient use of resources, to generate less by-products and higher yields, while ore-bodies tend to be less qualitative and new process routes (e.g. direct leach) are developed. Besides all these facts the mixing solution must be robust and economic. In this paper we want to address our approach in the development and designing of HPAL agitation equipment."

Nova Scotia has been mining and exporting industrial minerals for over two hundred years. As an industrial mineral producer, this province continues to rank as the number one gypsum mining and exporting region in North America. Mining of many other commodities is ongoing, supplying many local and export markets. In all, excluding aggregate producers, there are nineteen industrial mineral producers operating at thirty sites producing nine commodities including anhydrite, barite, clay and shale, dolomite, gypsum, limestone, salt, silica sand and stone (Fig. I). Numerous aggregate producing operations supply all the province's aggregate requirements and export some of these materials to other regions of Atlantic Canada and as far away as Bermuda (Fig. 2) . Production value of industrial mineral commodities in Nova Scotia for 1982 was $105 million , representing 39% of the total value for all mineral production for the year. Because of the general improvement in the economy, indications are that the 1983 value of production will be higher.

ABSTRACT The effect of a low4emperature stress relief at 232.2°C. (450°?F.) on the fatigue properties of shot-peened SAE. 1080 steel has been investigated. Specimens of the steel were first annealed. One half of the steel bars were then normalized and the other half were water-quenched and drawn. Specimens of the steel with each heat treatment were tested in tensile, notched bar impact, and fatigue. The fatigue specimens were test in air and water in R. R. Moore high-speed rotating bending machines in the following conditions: un-peened, peened, and peened-and stress-relieved at 232.2°C. ( 450°F.) The &apos;endurance life&apos; and fatigue properties of specimens given a stress relief heat treatment after shot peening were superior to those of specimens given a smooth machine finish or shot peened. INTRODUCTION THIS investigation was initiated to obtain preliminary information on the effect on the fatigue resistance of shot peening the machined surface of a high-carbon steel similar in composition to that used in hollow drill steel. The data obtained in this investigation could be applied in analysing the application of shot peening hollow drill steel shanks. It is well known that the &apos;endurance life&apos; and fatigue limits of steel are greatly ?improved by shot peening. References to this in the literature are numerous.

ALTHOUGH the idea of roasting zinc concentrates in suspension had intrigued investigators for a number of years, no commercial application of a process appeared successful until the development of the "Cominco" process. The efficiency and high capacity of this process may be judged by the fact that nearly all other electrolytic plants and many zinc retort plants in the world use this method. A furnace of the Cominco type can roast without special preparatory treatment and without supplementary fuel, mineral sulphides such as zinc sulphides and iron sulphides containing varying amounts of moisture at any desired rate ranging from one-half up to full capacity. The full capacity of a unit is in general about three times that of a multiple hearth furnace of the same size. "Pre-treatment of mill feed in a minerals processing plant enables for higher production efficiency per ton of product, reduction of consumables and diverting mineral feed types. Sensor based particle sorting allows for pre-concentration of the run-of-mine (ROM) material prior to other concentrating process. Various sensors provide different responses from the minerals in measured particles. The capability of “accepting” or “rejecting” particles based on sensor responses is investigated in specific test work for each project. Modern sorting machines use pneumatic actuators to divert the reject particles from the material stream. This paper discusses the incorporation of ore sorting test work in processing and plant design. When taking the effects of a sorting circuit into account early in the process planning phase, the downstream process can be adequately sized and impacts evaluated. Potential benefits include but are not limited to increased head grade, lower tonnage to the mill, increased mining operations, removal of deleterious elements and changed properties in the process feed. In a case study we present the Keliber lithium project in central Finland. The plant will produce 9000 tons of lithium carbonate per year from a spodumene ore. Ore sorting and flotation tests were carried out in laboratory and pilot scale. Process models were designed and simulations performed using Outotec’s HSC Chemistry Simulation software. Changes in the flotation performance (grade, recovery, impurity levels) were simulated with and without the pre-concentration of the ROM material. The metallurgical performance and mine economics of the different operational scenarios were evaluated using the Ore-Met optimizer module of the simulation software.INTRODUCTION Challenges in the recent years such as declining ore grades, increasing energy prices, scarcity of water and increasing environmental regulations raise the demand for more efficient processing technologies. Sensor based sorting offers a method for pre-concentration or waste rejection at an early process stage. The technology analyzes each rock particle separately for their unique physical and chemical properties, and diverts the particles into separate material streams by high pressure air jets. Successful implementation relies on ore heterogeneity, differential sensor response and suitable feed preparation."

"The Bayer process involves the digestion of bauxite in caustic liquors at high temperature and pressure. Typically the digestion section of the plant involves the heating of liquors up to the digestion temperature followed by flashing of the digestion product to atmospheric pressure with the flashed steam used to pre-heat the incoming cold slurry. Despite the heat recovery, the digestion process is a high consumer of energy. The application of tube digestion technology in such plants has resulted in significant improvements in refinery energy efficiency with associated benefits of process simplification and refinery flow sheet capital cost reduction. This paper reviews the potential application of this technology to other metals within the non-ferrous industry.THE BAYER PROCESSA typical Bayer flow sheet is shown in Figure 1. The raw feed material bauxite (containing aluminium hydroxide as gibbsite Al(OH)3 and boehmite AlO(OH)) is digested in caustic liquors (caustic soda is the solvent) at high temperature and pressure. This process extracts the alumina and silica and any carbon present on the ore. The slurry is then flashed down to atmospheric condition allowing for heat recovery from the flashed vapour and producing slurry supersaturated in alumina.Following the digestion process the mud is removed via thickening and then pressure filtration to remove fine particulate and produce a clarified liquor with dissolved alumina in solution. The resulting pregnant liquor is then cooled allowing the alumina in solution to precipitate as aluminium trihydrate Al(OH)3. The precipitated hydrate is then filtered and washed and classified into fine and coarse fractions. The fine material is returned to the precipitation process as seed while the coarse fraction is calcined at high temperature to produce alumina. The filtrate from the filtration process (spent liquor) is then heated by the incoming pregnant liquor before being fed to an evaporation process which produced the strong caustic liquor required in the digestion process. After German reunification the mining industry in former East Germany was profoundly restructured. Beside privatization of profitable companies the public sector took over responsibility for the mining operations to be shut down. Therefore state-owned companies cope with technical, ecological, and social challenges. The rehabilitation and reclamation has to rededicate former mining areas to new use and provided new jobs as well. In the lignite mining districts there are around 100,000 ha of mining area, a mining caused disturbance to the groundwater balance and to the system of surface water bodies of approx. 390,000 ha. They are called the largest landscape construction site in Europe. In addition to the results and diverse experience achieved over the past 23 years, a description will follow of our new challenges and of an outlook on remaining tasks. This article will describe the financing, as well as aspects of the jobcreation policy arising from lignite industry remediation.
