In titanium-lined autoclave design the most critical point of its mechanical reliability is its titanium batten strips present at the circumferential and longitudinal barrel-weld seams. Recently an Australian Company, W.E. Smith Hudson (WESH) P/L, has developed a fully flush batten strip and is building autoclaves with this design. Significant research and development has been performed in the process. In this presentation, design aspects of these batten strips are presented that cover topics such as residual-stress magnitudes during fabrication, affect of preheat during batten-strip welding and residual stress in respect to fatigue life. There has been little research done regarding the affects of residual batten stress in relation to fatigue life. Considerations of this 'grey' area of design will be discussed based on the author's research data and finite element analysis.

"The CTL-500 centrifugal extraction machine, which was independently developed by Baotou Shibo Rare Earth Extraction & Equipment Co., Ltd., is presented in this article. The machine is based on centrifugal extraction principle and has been used in P507-HCl-RECl3 extraction system. Automatic control has been utilized in the system. In this paper, a comparison is made between centrifugal extraction and conventional mixer-settler extraction and satisfactory results are shown. INTRODUCTIONCentrifugal extraction is a fast and efficient liquid-liquid extraction method. The process includes solute transfer and separation of the two liquid phases. In the CTL-500 machine, the organic and aqueous phases individually enter a lower mixing chamber in certain proportions and are mixed and dispersed and solute thereby transferred from one phase to the other. The mixed phases pass into a rotating drum and the two liquid phases are separated under centrifugal force. As it flows upward, the aqueous phase, which has a higher specific gravity, flows away from the rotating drum centre towards the drum wall and the organic phase flows towards the drum center. The two liquid phases enter into collection chambers through independent weir plates and are discharged from the machine.The centrifugal extraction machine has been widely used in liquid-liquid separation, either without solid or with small quantities of solids (Chen, Zhang, Zhuo, Chen & Li, 2008; Duan, Jing, Zhu & Chen, 2007; Duan, Zhou & Zhou, 2006). Examples of the use of the centrifugal contactor include the separation of water from crude oil, treatment of heavy oil and diesel to eliminate water and salt; the extraction of penicillin, garlic oil, malathion, and interferon; the hydrometallurgy recovery of nickel, copper and uranium; extraction of edible oil, spice, refined oil and food color; treatment and recycle of print and dyeing wastes; treatment of hydroxybenzene-contaminated sewage by multistage extraction and separation of water from oil in ship sewage."

"Although the centennial of the Peirce-Smith (PS) converting process has recently been celebrated, the technology has essentially not changed much since its inception. PS converting is used extensively in the Cu, Ni and PGM industry to remove iron and sulphur from a molten matte phase. A typical PS converting process would use low pressure air supplied by a blower to bubble air through the molten bath. This bubbling injection regime is inherently inefficient from a process and energy consideration. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Brimacombe and co-workers demonstrated at both laboratory and plant scales that sonic injection (jetting regime) into copper or nickel converters could reduce or eliminate the above hindrances characteristic of PS converting. Since then, in spite of these successes, very little industrial applications have made headway in the converting process of non-ferrous metal mattes on a commercial scale. As part of its operational improvement and energy reduction program (process efficiency), Lonmin Platinum decided to conduct a full scale industrial evaluation of sonic injection using air only to establish if punchless, high efficiency sonic injection was feasible in its small 3.05 × 4.57 m converters (10’ × 15’). A plant trial was run for four weeks in one of its three converters. This paper discusses the plant demonstration with a focus on the experience acquired by Lonmin together with the key learnings from the trials. Reference will also be made to the commercial aspects of a full scale implementation of sonic injection in all three converters in the smelter. "ALTHOUGH I SHOULD FIRST REVIEW the state of the mining art as it is today, because of the shortness of time I will confine myself to a re-view of the more important advances in that art which have been made in the past two to three decades. Then, a look at the opportunities and the challenges which now present themselves will be more meaningfulFirst, some of the more impor-tant developments in underground mining:(1) The recognition that good ventilation, visibility and working conditions are essential preliminaries to efficient production has resulted in their incorporation as a matter of practice in modern mine planning. (2) The introduction of the car-bide bit and the re-introduction of the airleg drill, and the resulting sharp rise in productivity, were early postwar developments. (3) The recovery of the coarser fraction of mill tailings for use as mine backfill also is an important cost-reducing development of recent years -and this has led to cemented backfill, which, al-though more expensive, meets certain specific needs and has tremendous potential. (4) Great strides have been made in improving explosives' materials and explosives' accessories. Millisecond-delay electric blasting caps, which improve fragmentation and reduce the seismic effect of blasting, and the development and •application for underground use of explosives are but two among many such improvements. (5) Trackless mining methods, using quarry-type equipment in some instances and specially de-signed low-headroom trucks, loaders and carrier-mounted drills in others have been successfully applied. (6) Dual-purpose load-haul units are now in use loading and hauling from open stope drawpoints, and smaller versions of this type of unit are in use in cut-and-fill and other types of stopes."

Carbonate rocks are widespread throughout Ontario and provide raw material for more uses than perhaps any other rock type. The principal carbonate rocks that are used by industry in Ontario are Paleozoic era limestone and dolostone. Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is composed mainly of the mineral calcite (CaCO,) while dolostone, also a sedimentary rock, is composed mostly of dolomite [CaMg (CO,),l. The majority of the province's limestone and dolostone extraction occurs from Paleozoic era rocks located in southern Ontario. Calcite and dolomite are also found in Precambrian marbles, calcite veins and carbonatites, however, utilization of these rocks by industry has been less common. Calcite and dolomite-rich rocks are utilized for a wide variety of uses including raw materials for cement and lime manufacture, chemical and metallurgical stone, fillers and construction aggregates (Derry, Michener, Booth and Wahl and OGS 1989a). For some uses chemical and physical requirements are very important. In the manufacture of glass, for instance, the chemical requirements of source materials are very important and very stringent. In other uses physical criteria such as whiteness may be more important. Although carbonate rocks are quite plentiful within the province, deposits that contain high concentrations of calcite or dolomite are somewhat limited. For that reason, this paper focuses on deposits that are known to, or may contain, a high percentage of calcite and/or dolomite. The paper emphasizes potential sedimentary limestone and dolostone resources, as these are the carbonate rocks most commonly utilized by industry in Ontario.

An equilibrium calculational computer program (STABCAL) can be used for titration simulation. The program can handle various forms of titrants: solid, aqueous, gaseous or another solution, and various type of reactions: reductive, oxidative and adsorption. Background chemistry, mathematical considerations, and program development will be illustrated. Also, simple titration applications such as how to determine the acidity of aqueous solutions and alkaline sulfide leaching of gold are presented. Processing of an acid mine water from the Berkeley Pit in Butte, Montana has been used for illustration purposes. The treatment studies included: cementation, sulfidization, and neutralization. The calculational results for the neutralization treatment using various alkaline reagents are compared to actual experimental data and potentially appropriate processes are discussed. Computational

Three nickel based superalloys (7.5%Cr+5%Co+2%Mo+1%Ti+5%Al and Ni balance (wt%)) containing different amounts of W and Re were produced in the single crystal (SX) condition utilizing the Bridgman casting process. First, the effect of different levels of Re, and W on chemical microsegregation were investigated by EPMA quantitative analysis, and eutectic phase fraction analysis. Second, in order to investigate the effect of these refractory elements addition on oxidation behaviour, isothermal oxidation testing of the SX nickel based superalloys was conducted at 1000°C for 277 hours under 3 ppm moisture content of air in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). All three SX nickel based superalloys revealed an excellent SX solidification structure with a common primary dendrite arm spacing of -250 µm and a large fraction of ?/?' eutectic located between the secondary dendrite arms. From the average EPMA compositional results, with the exception of Ni, elements such as Cr, Co, Re, Mo, and W all tended to segregate towards the dendrite core during solidification, while Al, Ti, and Ta were present in greater quantity in the last liquid phase to solidify, which resulted in large eutectic ?/? ' phases to form within the interdendritic regions. As the nominal level of Re increased, microsegreagation of Re, W, Cr and Mo increased, indicating that Re had a much greater influence on partitioning behavior compared to W. Figure la shows the specific mass gain as a function of exposure time for each alloy. An alloy with 2wt% of W and Re (Alloy B) exhibited less weight gain compared to two other alloys with either higher content of W or Re (Alloy A and C). Microstructural and compositional analyses of oxidized samples were conducted using SEM and EDS. Figure lb shows the typical surface morphologies of the oxidized Alloys A and B. It is evident that more oxide nodules (indicated by arrows in the figure) were presented in Alloy A. It is speculated that the amount of these nodules was responsible for more mass gain in Alloy A compared to the two other alloys. From the examination of the longitudinal section of the oxidized samples as shown in Figure 2, for Alloy A, nodules actually penetrated deep into the material. For Alloy B, however, a relatively uniform and continuous oxide layer was developed and deeply attacked areas were not observed. It was also found that preferential oxidized regions were located at the area between the ?/?' eutectic phase and the dendrite arms where the concentration of refractory elements was relatively high. Therefore, it is plausible that the oxidation kinetics of these alloys is related to the extent of microsegregation.

Analysis of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) usually involves high-end analytical tools including scanning electron microscope (SEM) and analytical transmission electron microscope (TEM). In recent years, focused ion beam microscope (FIB) has found many applications in materials science fields. In this study, high-resolution FIB images have shown details of crack morphology and a plan-view TEM specimen containing the selected crack-tip was successfully prepared. The preparation of cross-sectioned samples containing crack tips was of paramount importance for subsequent TEM analyses.

Abstract -A radiometric survey was carried out over clastic sediments in the immediate vicinity of some phosphatic sediments of Cretaceous age in the Wadi Qasser Al-Hallabat basin of central Syria. The objective was to explore for uranium and to define its dispersion pattern. This was based on ground radiometric surveys and geological studies. All ground surveys (using radon emanometry, track etching, gamma-ray survey and geochemistry) gave similar results, outlining the locations of the radioactive phosphatic formations in the basin, and indicating the dispersion pattern of uranium in the clastic sediments in the surrounding area. The dispersal of uranium from upper Cretaceous phosphatic formation occurs by mechanical weathering and chemical leaching by oxidizing surface waters. A rough estimate is that about one-third of the original uranium content of the Cretaceous sediments has been dispersed. Mechanical erosion is responsible for the main part of this released uranium, which now occurs in Recent sediments. However, the occurrences of spotty secondary U mineralization indicates that another small part of the available uranium must have been chemically leached out by the prevailing oxidizing waters, forming minor surficial minerals.

Interaction of aluminum with silica based ceramics Jose M. Soto, Jeffrey D. Smith, William G. Fahrenholtz. Department of Ceramic Engineering University of Missouri-Rolla Rolla, MO 65409-0330 USA ABSTRACT Interactions between A356 aluminum (Al-Si alloy) and dense fused silica (FS) riser tubes used for low-pressure casting of aluminum alloys were evaluated using a sessile drop approach. The tubes have a short service life, but cost and thermal shock resistance make them an effective solution. The main problem encountered during use is the reaction of aluminum with silica to form alumina and silicon, which causes failure. Tests have been conducted on as-fired (uncoated) and modified (coated) tubes. Experiments were carried out in a horizontal furnace at 1225°C under argon to minimize the effect of the aluminum oxide on the interactions at the alloy-silica interface. Images of the drop were acquired and contact angle values were estimated for uncoated and coated samples, but no significant differences in the contact angles were observed. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of cracks at the interface between the reaction zone and the unreacted silica. The presence of reaction products (silicon in the reacting alloy and aluminum in a reaction zone between the alloy and the unaffected silica) has been confirmed using energy dispersive spectroscopy. A two layer coating system was found to be effective in reducing penetration of the aluminum alloy. The interactions between bed media and aluminum have been studied under static and dynamic flow conditions. An experimental system was set up simulating a small filter. Desired flow field can be created around alumina particles and velocities can be adjusted. A mathematical model was developed to predict the velocities, and this was validated using data from a visualization study. The interaction zone on the surface of the particles was analyzed with optical microscopy and SEM. This paper presents the study and compares the results under static and dynamic flow conditions.

Prior work on effects of lamellar orientation on creep rates and other mechanical properties have shown that having lamellae parallel to the tensile axis provides optimal creep resistance and good strength. Consequently, a directional solidification system was used to examine the effect of solidification rate on the development of crystals with lamellae parallel to the growth direction. The nominal chemical composition of TiAl ingots was Ti-46A1-2Mo-2Nb (at%) and the ingots were 20 mm in diameter and 180 mm long. The master alloy bars were placed in a high purity yttria mold on a copper chill plate and raised into the hot zone of a Bridgman furnace. The alloys were melted and then directionally solidified at withdrawal rates of 4, 8, and 12 mm/min. As-cast specimens were sectioned at positions of 4, 22, 66, 111, and 155 mm from the bottom of the ingot to evaluate microstructure and crystallographic texture as a function of distance from the bottom of the ingot. The directionally solidified microstructure consists of continuous columnar grains with fully lamellar structure, a network morphology of primary 13, yttria particles, and interlocked columnar boundaries. For all three ingots, the texture at 4 mm shows many peaks, with isolated strong peaks, and a slight tendency toward <111> plane normals within about 20° of the cylindrical axis. At 155 mm, all specimens showed substantially stronger clustering of <111> orientations near the cylinder axis, with the strongest clustering of poles occurring for the 8 and 12 mm/min specimens. Analysis of diffraction peaks indicates that strongly compressive residual stresses in the radial direction are present in the casting. The combined microscopy and texture analysis provides more complete understanding of the processes of directional solidification of TiAl alloys.

Microseismic monitoring systems listen to a rockmass and record ground vibrations associated with brittle rock fracture. Modern systems record continuously and can identify as many as one thousand small and possibly larger magnitude events occurring each day from induced stress change and redistribution. This paper presents examples of the real time use of microseismic information in mining applications. It shows how alerts can quickly identify large magnitude events or unexpected clusters of seismicity and how seismic re-entry protocol can help to improve safety decisions. Additionally, newly developed advanced analysis techniques applied to mine seismic data sets are shown including the use of clustering methods to see into a cloud of seismic data to identify significant activity and quantify possible planar features. The use of source parameter trend analysis is shown to be a beneficial method for interpreting changes in relative stress levels. Seismic moment magnitude distributions are analyzed using the TGR (Truncated Gutenberg Richter) and TMD (Tapered Moment Distribution) methods to estimate bvalue and expected maximum magnitude. Seismic hazard analysis is shown as a useful way to simplify a dataset and highlight seismic hot spots. The rockmass response to excavation is a complicated spatial and temporal process and microseismic monitoring is a method that can be used to help understand the location and mechanics of failure occurring in the rock ultimately helping to improve safety and productivity at a mine site.

"The discovery of low-grade copper-silver mineralization near the town of Tipperary, Ireland, by Gortdrum Mines Limited was the result of reconnaissance geological and geochemical exploration followed by target delineation from induced polarization surveys.Initially, orientation studies at the Tynagh lead-zinc orebody showed that such deposits could be readily detected in stream sediments and soils using cold extraction analysis for total heavy metals. Numerous areas showing stratigraphical and structural similarities to Tynagh were then selected for reconnaissance geochemical prospecting.The Gortdrum deposit was detectable through the presence of anomalous metal values in stream sediments 3,000 feet downstream; soil sampling indicated an area of 2,000 by 700 feet containing 2 Yz to 20 times background cold-extractable metal values. Induced polarization surveys defined the dimensions and attitude of mineralization.Drilling to date has outlined (under 10 to 20 feet of till) low-grade copper-silver mineralization within Lower Carboniferous limestones and shales which have been faulted against Devonian sandstone. Mineralization ex-tends from surface to depths of 250 to 450 feet and consists of bornite-chalcocite-tetrahedrite and some chalcopy-rite in altered limestones and intrusive dikes.The deposit is geologically analogons to the Tynagh and Silvermines orebodies, but in contrast exhibits a predom-inant structural control. Provisionally, it is postulated that mid-Carboniferous folding and faulting produced the pre-mineralization high porosity via recrystallization, shearing and brecciation. Subsequently, hydrothermal solutions from the west, with a probable eommon origin to the volcanic dikes, were introduced along the fault planes. Although syngenetic causes cannot be exempted, the field relationships favour an epigenetic origin."

"This presentation will provide an overview and understanding of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and Ontario Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants. It includes discussions on the history and practical development of the standards and an overview of engineering best practices from a construction, maintenance and operational viewpoint. INTRODUCTION Ontario is one of the safest mining jurisdictions in the world and has some of the most comprehensive regulations for the construction, operation and maintenance of a mine. In the USA, several operators have adopted some or all of the practices prescribed by the Ontario Regulations as an internal procedure. Experience has demonstrated that these plants are indicating less unplanned downtime and fewer issues with MSHA inspectors in their hoist plants. HISTORY AND THE REGULATIONS Both Canada and the USA have had some form of laws governing the operation of mines since the late 1890s. The paths of legislation have run in reasonably parallel lines, continually improving the health and safety conditions in the mining industry. Ontario Mine Health and Safety In the 1970s the accident rates in mining were higher than any other industrial sector; this prompted a Royal Commission on the Health and Safety of Workers in Mines (the Ham Report). The recommendations of this report, published in 1976, generated several changes in the regulations regarding worker safety in mines. Following the release of the Ham report, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS) was passed by the Legislature in 1978. The Act is a set of comprehensive laws governing almost all Ontario workplaces, and it replaced separate laws governing different industrial sectors. OHS is enforced by the Ministry of Labour (MOL), and this discussion will focus specifically on Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, R.R.O. 1990, Regulation 854, Mines and Mining Plants, Part X Mine Hoisting Plant (Ontario Regulations). USA Mine Health and Safety A coal mine explosion in West Virginia and medical studies on occupational disease led to the 1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (Coal Act). The Coal Act was the most comprehensive and stringent Federal legislation governing the mining industry to date. The Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) was formed, following the 1973 Act, as a new departmental agency to assume the enforcement of safety and health in mines. The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 (Mine Act) transferred enforcement responsibilities from the Department of the Interior to the Department of Labor and named the new agency the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). This agency enforces the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), and this discussion refers to CFR Title 30 Mineral Resources, Chapter I Mine Safety and Health Administration, Department of Labor, Subchapter K—Metal and Non-metal Mine Safety and Health (MSHA)."

The Granby ores may be divided into three groups or classes. The No. I ore is a heavy pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, sulphide carrying some free silica, and calcite. No. 2 ore carries the same general group of sulphides as does No. 1, but in a lesser amount. The gangue is an altered greenstone. No. 3 ore has a smaller amount of sulphides than either of the others. Analyses of these ores is as follows: Cu. Si02 Fe. CaO S. Al 203 MgO No. I. Drill cores show a certain dissemination of sulphides in portions of the rock, so that grinding to 5 per cent. + 65 mesh with 65 per cent.-200 mesh liberates the sulphide minerals very completely. The association of the sulphides is fundamental. The pyrite was probably deposited first and was followed by a portion of the chalcopyrite, or these two portions of the sulphide minerals were deposited together.

"The continued increase of the automobile production leads to a higher platinum, palladium and rhodium (PGM) demand. Due to the high value of the PGMs the recycle of these metals from automotive catalysts is of special interest. Pyrometallurgical processes, which are only focused on the PGMs, represent the state of the art of automotive catalysts recovery. However, hydrometallurgical recycling processes offer additional recovery of other valuable metals and compounds. The method presented in this paper is based on a combination of hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide to dissolve the valuable metal fraction which can be precipitated afterwards.INTRODUCTIONPlatinum and the corresponding metals from the PGM group, especially palladium and rhodium are well known as catalytic active materials. They support chemical reactions which are inhibited. This effect is used to decrease the amount of harmful compounds like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide or nitrogen oxides in automotive exhaust gases. The generation of these toxic substances is based on incomplete combustion, which in turn is caused by non-ideal conditions in the combustion chamber. Catalytic converters minimize the harmful compounds by supporting the following Reactions 1 – 3 (Votsmeier et al., 2009).CO + ½ O2 ? CO2 (1)CnHm + (n + ¼ m) O2 ? n CO2 + ½ m H2O (2)2 NO + 2 CO ? N2 + 2 CO2 (3)Platinum and palladium are very effective for the oxidation (Reactions 1 and 2), while rhodium supports the decomposition of nitrogen oxides by carbon monoxide (Votsmeier et al., 2009). The classical three way catalyst was a platinum – rhodium combination with a Pt:Rh ratio of 5:1 (Hagelüken et al., 2005). Today the platinum, palladium and rhodium ratio is highly variable and strongly depends on the engine type as well as on the car producer. Diesel engines are operated with a super stoichiometric air addition in comparison to spark ignition systems. Therefore the exhaust gas composition and off gas temperature is different. Based on the high oxygen amount, diesel engines produce less carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons but more nitrogen oxide in contrast to gasoline engines. This leads to various requirements for the catalytic converters."

"Ventilation is an essential component of any underground mine, playing a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of workers, and a mine’s continuous operation. At a time when mining companies are increasingly having to move to deeper underground operations in pursuit of high-grade ore-bodies, the search is on for more efficient ventilation systems that will allow mining to be carried out at even deeper levels whilst ensuring the protection of workers and the maximisation of productivity through temperature management and the lowering of energy costs. Mining companies today are looking for innovative ways to deliver new technologies and procedures to enhance their mine’s profitability. Energy consumption by mine ventilation systems is higher than ever due to stringent specifications of underground equipment (primarily combustion engine emissions), air quality standards and mining at deeper levels which all require more powerful ventilation systems. With energy costs associated with operating ventilation systems being a mine’s second-highest cost of production after labour, finding the optimal ventilation solution is critical to a mine’s performance. Smelting has been the primary method of treatment for refractory copper sulfide concentrates such as enargite (Cu3AsS4), but the pyrometallurgical processing generates elevated levels of volatile arsenic. The present research investigates a novel hydrometallurgical process of oxidative dissolution of enargite at ambient conditions in the presence of chlorine dioxide (ClO2), a very powerful oxidant generated in solution by the reaction between a strong acid (HCl or H2SO4) and sodium chlorite (NaClO2). The effects of initial oxidant concentration, particle size, agitation speed and temperature on dissolution kinetics and copper extraction were investigated. It was found that a stoichiometric ratio of ClO2:Cu3AsS4 = 9:1 were needed to completely and congruently dissolve the mineral with fast kinetics (<15 minutes) under ambient temperature. The dissolution extent (metal extraction) increases with increasing ClO2 concentration and decreasing particle size of solids, but is not influenced by temperature or agitation speed.

"Heap leaching of gold ores in permafrost conditions is feasible provided certain criteria are met. These criteria include relatively short heap leach residence time and the availability of waste heat.This paper describes the conceptual design of such a system for a mining operation in the North West Territories of Canada. The design includes the concept of continuous countercurrent leaching in enclosed ore heaps.Indicative capital and operating costs are given.INTRODUCTIONIn April 1984, Acres Davy McKee Engineering Inc. (ADM Eng.) in association with Ontario Research Foundation (ORF), was invited to carry out a preliminary design, cost estimate and financial analysis to assess the viability of gold heap leaching in a permafrost region in North West Territories, Canada.An orebody was being explored which could, by nature of its mineralogy, be upgraded substantially by crushing and screening in the size range of 1/4 in. to 3/4 in. It was proposed to process the screen undersize through an existing gold mill on site and to treat the oversize material in a heap leach facility to be constructed adjacent to the existing mill.Despite the formidable challenges imposed by isolation, permafrost and harsh winter conditions, the heap leach project was considered worthy of examination because of the relatively high grade of the heap leach material (> 0.1 oz/ton), very short leach times (in the range of 1 to 4 days) and the availability of substantial quantities of waste heat from the diesel generating station on site.Design challenges included the necessity to maintain the permafrost in frozen condition, to prevent freezing of ore and leach solution, to limit size of construction materials to that which could be carried in a Hercules freight plane and to contain water usage at an absolute minimum level."

"Concerns over possible additional involvement of governments in Canada&apos;s mining industry and its adverse effects on the industry &apos;s growth were a frequent topic of conversation at the recent Annual General Meeting of the CIM.Still painfully fresh in the minds of industry leaders are the disastrous results of the federal/provincial scramble over resource revenues which followed the relatively high metal prices witnessed in 1973/1974. At current metal prices, it is not surprising, then, that a nagging fear persists that these governments may once again restructure tax and other rules to the detriment of the industry and the country.This month, Tax Notes recalls some of the progress which the industry and governments have made in 1979 in the taxation of the resource sector, and urges that higher metal prices be viewed in light of the costly exploration, development and production efforts which will be required for the industry to continue to play its important role in our economy.IntroductionAt the Annual General Meeting of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, held in April, 1980, it was abundantly clear that there is widespread concern in Canada&apos;s mining industry that this country&apos;s tax regime may once again be blasted by ill winds of change.A stable and more favourable tax climate, as well as higher metal prices and profits, made 1979 almost a golden year for Canadian mining.
