The mine is located on Highway 117 connecting Val d'Or to Montreal and very close to the main railway networkHistoryFive successive exploration attempts by Aur Resources resulted in the discovery of the large Louvicourt orebody in June 1989. Construction of the surface and underground infrastructures commenced in the spring of 1991. Milling operations commenced in July 1994. The entire project cost CDN$290 million, almost CDN$20 million less than initially estimated. The concentrator infrastructure cost CDN$64 million.Louvicourt mine is owned in partnership by Novicourt Inc. (45%), Teck Corporation (25%), and Aur Resources Inc., the administrator (30%).Brief DescriptionLouvicourt mine is the largest producer of base metals (Cu and Zn) in Abitibi-Temiscamingue. "10.1. IntroductionAs discussed by Westland (1981), the six platinum-group elements (PGE) belong to the Group VIII transition metals, to which iron, nickel and cobalt also belong. The chemical similarity between these nine metals accounts for the fact that they tend to be concentrated together as a result of geological processes. These processes started to effect the distribution of these metals at the very beginning of the earth's history.The first line in Table 1 gives the concentration of nickel and certain other Group VIII transition metals in carbonaceous chondrites, those meteorites with a composition that is believed to reflect best the composition of our planetary system apart from hydrogen and helium. The second line is the estimated concentration of the same elements in the earth as a whole. It is seen that these two estimates are quite similar, the earth being perhaps 2 to 3 times richer in these particular metals than the planetary system as a whole. The reason for this is not fully understood, but it may be due to the earth being formed by the accumulation and capture of a greater proportion of iron (and therefore siderophile-rich) than stoney (and therefore siderophile-poor) planetesimals than the planetary system itself.The third line in Table 1 is the average composition of the crust of the earth. With the exception of iron, all of the Group VIII transition elements are rare in the crust, present at concentrations of It tOO to Itt ,000 of that of the bulk earth. This is because the outstanding chemical characteristic of this group of elements is their siderophile nature; that is, their tendency to alloy with metallic iron. Because of this, once the earth became molten very early in its life history, these elements dissolved in the molten iron present at this stage and were removed from the outer accessible parts as this dense liquid sank to the centre of the earth to form the core. Although iron was the main instrument of concentration of the Group VIII metals, its much greater over-all abundance and its ability to combine with oxygen more easily than the others in the group means that significant amounts still remain in the oxidized portions of the earth.The fact that most of the Group VIII metals are available to use in workable concentrations at all is that they are 5 to 30 times more concentrated in the earth's mantle than the crust, as shown in line 4 of Table I. There has been a constant, if slow, interchange of matter between the mantle and the overlying crust throughout most of the earth's history and, under certain circumstances, this interchange has given rise to economic concentrations of metals."

Gold was first found in Nova Scotia about 1830-40, but its significance at that time was not appreciated. Probably the first discovery that resulted in any work was made by Lieut. C. !'Estrange, at Mooseland, on the Tangier river, in 1858.1 Since that time gold has been mined with varying success until now, and from 1868 onwards work has never altogether ceased. Gold mining in Nova Scotia is at the moment under a cloud, and the idea generally accepted by most people is that it has failed in the past, and that there is no prospect for it in the future. The actual reasons for the present situation have never been carefully analysed, and it seems a good thing to see what really is the state of the case and whether or not this general idea is worthy of credence. It is the purpose of the present paper to analyse the situation in the light of present knowledge, and to set forth some data which may assist in the future development of the Province.

The hot deformation behavior of Pure Mg and Mg-0.29Ce alloy were studied by isothermal hot compression tests in the temperature range of 250 - 500°C and strain rate range of 10-3 - 102 s-1 in a computer-controlled 50kN servo hydraulic universal testing machine (UTM). The results show that the flow stress of Mg pure and Mg-0.29Ce alloy increases with strain rate and decreases after a peak value, indicating dynamic recovery and recrystallization. Process efficiency was increased by nearly 10 to 12% by addition of Ce in Mg. Mg pure exhibits instability zones between 250-275°C at 10 ? 102 s-1 and 400¬500°C at 101 ? 102 s-1 temperatures and strain rates respectively, rest is the safe deformation zone. Wherein, Mg-0.29 Ce exhibits two low efficiency zones from 250 ? 300°C at 10-2? 10° s-1, 400 ? 500°C at 101 ? 102s-1 and high efficiency zone at 450 ? 500°C at 10-3? 10-1s-1. 4D process maps were generated for the above said alloys which illustrate contours of power dissipation and instability in the 3D space of strain rate, temperature and strain.

Surfaces forces have been measured between gold sphere and gold-coated glass plate in xanthate solutions using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The measurements conducted in potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) solutions showed long-range hydrophobic forces, with the force curves showing no evidence for nanonubbles on the surface. The strongest hydrophobic force was measured at contact angle of 94° with a decay length of 23 nm. The hydrophobic force became weaker at higher concentrations and after a long immersion time, which may be attributed to the xanthate species adsorbed on top of the first mono layer. The hydrophobic force became stronger when the residual xanthate solution is displaced by pure water, indicating that hydrophobic force becomes the strongest in pure water.

"In-pit crushing and conveyor (IPCC) systems have become increasingly popular in the mining industry as an alternative to truck-and-shovel systems. Deciding whether to haul waste rock by truck or IPCC represents an important gap to be investigated in semi-mobile IPCC systems. A cost analysis is presented to evaluate the feasibility of crushing and conveying waste material in IPCC systems, along with sensitivity and risk assessments through Monte Carlo simulation. Although the capital expenditure is higher, results showed waste crushing will be feasible in deep pits and over long mine life and haul distances.RÉSUMÉ La popularité des systèmes de concassage et de transport dans la fosse minière (IPCC, de l’anglais In-pit crushing and conveyor) n’a cessé de croître dans l’industrie minière ; ils constituent en effet une option intéressante de remplacement des systèmes par camions et pelles mécaniques. Le choix entre le transport des stériles par camions ou par IPCC est encore difficile à faire et devra faire l’objet d’une étude approfondie au niveau des systèmes d’IPCC semi-mobiles. Une analyse des coûts est présentée pour évaluer la faisabilité du concassage et du transport des stériles par les systèmes d’IPCC, de même que des évaluations de la sensibilité et des risques par le biais de la simulation de Monte Carlo. Si les dépenses en immobilisations s’avèrent être plus élevées, les résultats ont cependant montré que le concassage des stériles sera envisageable dans des fosses profondes ainsi que sur une longue durée de vie et de longues distances de transport. INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is currently facing many challenges such as low commodity prices, increasing environmental concerns and regulations, lower grades, deeper mines, and greater waste-rock quantities. As a result, the profitability of mining operations has decreased, with many mines stopping or suspending operations, and many new projects being postponed. Mining companies have therefore focused on improvements and innovations to increase the cost effectiveness of operations, for example, increasing production capacity to take advantage of the economies of scale (Crowson, 2003) and decreasing the unit operation cost. Changes in production capacity force mining companies to evaluate alternative material handling systems.During the past few decades and within material handling systems, significant improvements have been made to truck performance and capacity. Consequently, operating expenditures (OPEX) associated with fuel and maintenance have risen swiftly. In a mining operation, truck hauling systems now represent 40–50% of the capital cost and approximately 45% of the OPEX (Tutton & Streck, 2009). Additionally, material transportation costs are expected to increase due to longer haul distances arising from deeper and larger mines (Fleet et al., 2015). Finally, large fluctuations in fuel prices result in high risks associated with truck OPEX. According to the United States Energy Information Administration (2015), the cost of crude oil—the largest component of the retail price of diesel fuel—increased from US$24.31/barrel in 1986 to US$46.92/barrel in 2016, peaking at US$151.72/barrel in 2008 (Macrotrends, 2016)."

Heavy rainfall and typhoon oftentimes cause the collapse of hillslopes across mountain roads. Disastrous consequences of slope collapses necessitate the approach for predicting their occurrences. In practice, slope collapse prediction can be formulated as a deterministic classification problem with two class labels, namely ?collapse? and ?non-collapse?. Nevertheless, due to the criticality and the uncertainty of the problem, evaluating the collapse susceptibility of an area is a challenging task. This study proposes a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) approach, named as K-Nearest Neighbor Based Bayesian Classifier (KNNBC), to deal with slope collapse assessment. In the proposed model, Bayesian inference is used as a framework to achieve probabilistic prediction of slope collapse. Meanwhile, K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) is employed as a density estimation technique. Equipped with probabilistic outputs, the K-NNBC is able to yield predictions with different levels of confidence and diminish misclassified cases. Experimental results point out that the proposed model is very helpful for decision-makers in slope collapse assessment and disaster prevention planning.

"A hoisting plant design should satisfy two basic requirements:1. to provide the necessary materials handling capacity, including ventilation where applicable, while meeting the requirements of good practice and, as a minimum, government regulation; and2. to optimize the economics of the project. Selection of hoisting equipment to meet the first objective is a complex but logical engineering process. The necessary calculations of payloads, accelerations, speeds, rope strength, hoist size, and power requirements are very readily carried out on computers or programmable calculators. A variety of hoist options can be quickly examined to assess the effects of changes in design parameters.Meeting the second requirement involves balancing the costs of various hoist arrangements and shaft designs, together with the time cost effects of differing shaft sinking rates and potential advances to be gained by concurrent level development. The proposed mine layout is significant here, as is the possibility of future shaft deepening and/or production increase. The availability of used equipment may be significant, both as regards first cost and delivery time. The factors are interactive, with their relative effects .varying from project to project. This paper sets out the primary factors to be considered."

This paper explores the financial impact of the initial version of the Saskatchewan Potash Reserve Tax; first, a one; and second, in conjunction with the other taxes affecting the industry's profitability. A though the introduction of the Reserve Tax is shown to lead to a substantia increase in a hypothetical firm's effective tax burden, the more unusual outcomes frequently attributed to this levy on y occur after the imposition of other non-provincial tax rulings. Despite this qualification, the results obtained suggest that the Reserve Tax undoubted y acted as a catalyst in the polarization of attitudes during the ear y period of industry/government confrontation

Introduction It is common experience that on re-heating a fully martensitic steel below the Ac, point, a softer and tougher structure is formed as the tempering temperature is raised. The mechanism of tempering of plain carbon and low-alloy steels has been the subject of many investigations. In a very comprehensive study, Cohen and associates have recently established three different tempering stages, the last of which reaches completion at about 700°F., with heating rates of 5°F. per minute. This latter stage has been established ta be the carbide-forming stage, so that the steel consists of a mixture of ferrite and carbide, which are the metastable equilibrium phases. Any subsequent changes which take place at higher temperatures below the Ac, point in the absence of graphitization or carbide lattice conversion normally consist of agglomeration of the carbide particles. This naturally results in the softening of the steel. However, in many cases the Ac, point, as determined by dilatometry, thermal analysis, etc., only gives a rough estimate of the temperature where the reaction, ferrite plus carbides to austenite, is initiated. This appears to be especially true in the case of alloy steels in which three phases can co-exist in certain temperature ranges. Bain has given data on the three-phase equilibrium in both manganese and nickel steels. In these steels, the formation of austenite at temperatures just above the AeIL apparently involves the diffusion of the alloying elements to the first pools of austenite, thereby making the process very sluggish. As a consequence, the critical Ac points determined by ordinary methods at normal rates of heating can be quite distant from the true equilibrium Ae temperatures.

At its Copper Cliff Smelter, Vale Inco Limited processes a bulk copper-nickel concentrate in two Inco oxygen flash furnaces. Coke supplies a minor proportion of the process heat requirements, limiting the flash furnace matte grade to the target 45% CuNiCo. Coke addition to the furnace offers a potential means of establishing a reducing barrier on the surface of the molten bath. Such a practice would be conducive to producing sulfur deficient (partially metallized) matte. At the same iron content, the iron activity of sulfur deficient matte is higher than that of regular matte. A supernatant coke barrier could, therefore, be expected to lead to higher nickel and cobalt recoveries, reduction or even elimination of magnetite furnace bottom build-up and increased sulfur elimination as SO2 in the flash furnace. Extensive experiments were conducted in a miniplant flash furnace to investigate the effect on process metallurgy of the suggested modified scheme. The introduction and description of the experimental set up were given in Part 1 of this paper and an early paper published in Yazawa symposium1 together with the results and some in depth discussion on metallurgy. This paper intends to discuss the kinetics of the miniplant flash furnace testwork.

"Precious metals are currently associated with refractory minerals such as telluride (Calaverite, Sylvanite, etc.) and selenium (Naumannite Ag2Se), which are difficult to dissolve through traditional methods, therefore it is necessary to perform a pretreatment (oxidative or roasting) preceding the process of leaching by cyanidation. In this preliminary work the aim was to study the use of solvent extraction to remove tellurium and selenium ions from a synthetic cyanidation effluent, with the purpose of recycling the cyanide back to the process. For the extraction of these anions, TeO32- and SeO42-, tallow trimethyl ammonium chloride (Quatarmina TPR) and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (Amine F) were studied as extractants, using nonylphenol as a modifier in the organic phase (trimethylpentane). The results show that it is possible to recover 82% of selenium and 10% of tellurium from synthetic solutions containing either 20 mg/L Se or 20 mg/L of Te, respectively The Se or Te mole ratio to cyanide was 1:4.INTRODUCTION In relation to extraction of precious metals, the cyanidation process has been in use for over a century and despite environmental and toxicological problems it remains the most widely used and economical process available. In the late 90s, there were great efforts to recover gold and silver from refractory ores, which is difficult to do by simple cyanidation. To improve gold recovery from tellurides and selenides that occurs in some new mines, the ores are pretreated by roasting. This is one of the most effective ways of rendering refractory gold ores leachable as well as being a fast pretreatment process compared with bio-oxidation or pressure leaching (Aylmore, 2001). The most important tellurides minerals are Calaverite (AuTe2) and, Silvanite (Au, Ag)2Te4). In the case of selenides, minerals include Naumannite (Ag2Se) and Aguilarite (Ag4SeS) (Ostroumov et al., 1989). Examples of deposits containing telluride include La Bambolla Mine (Sonora, Mexico), Cripple Greek (Colorado, USA), and Kalgoorlie (Western Australia) (Aguayo et al., 1996). The main purpose of this work was to explore the feasibility of using quaternary ammonium salts such as: tallow trimethyl ammonium chloride (Quatarmina TPR) and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (amine F) to extract tellurium and selenium anions from aqueous synthetic cyanidation effluents, so that the cyanide solution could be recycled back to leaching process. The tests were performed on synthetic solutions similar to those found in a mine: 20 mg/L Te as TeO32-, 20 mg/L Se as SeO42- and mole ratio to cyanide was 1:4. using an alkaline medium with pH ranging from 8 to 12. ABSTRACT: The Victor diamond mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario. The process plant was designed to produce a 95 to 98% by weight diamond concentrate through three stages of comminution, dense medium separation, and proprietary X-ray technology for final recovery. The plant was commissioned over a period of six months, commencing prior to substantial completion of construction. Through effective planning of the commissioning phase, the Victor mine start-up was safely completed nine months ahead of schedule.

"IntroductionThis paper presents an overview of the industry status, describes current potash industry practices at three mills, and summarizes developments that have taken place since the previous review by Banks (1985).The commodity potash is produced in both New Brunswick and Saskatchewan from the evaporite ore sylvinite. This ore is a mixture of co-crystallized halite, NaCl, and sylvite, KCl, and a minor assortment of silica, carbonate, sulphate, and clay minerals. Carnallite, KMgCl3.6H20, is also dispersed throughout the bedded deposits and can affect the recovery of sylvite for fertilizer and industrial uses.Canada continues to be a principal source of supply of agricultural and industrial potash products. Figure 1 shows the sector performance between 1989 and 1997 in the context of the world supply and demand situation as reported by Prud'homme (1997) of Natural Resources Canada.Potash industry output is traditionally measured as the quantity of potassium nutrient and reported as tonnes ofK20. Mineralogically, the principal form of potash produced in Canada is sylvite, KCl, and 1 nutrient tonne K20 corresponds to approximately 1.64 tonnes of sylvite of agricultural grade, about 95% KCI. In 1997, the Canadian industry milling capacity was 13.4 million metric tons (Mt) ofK20 (22 Mt KCl) while the actual production was 9.0 Mt K20 (14.8 Mt KCl). Worldwide milling capacity in 1997 was 35.9 Mt K20 (58.8 Mt KCl) and global consumption was 25.3 Mt K20 (41.6 Mt KCl). Canadian producers can deliver about 35% of the global demand for potash commodities"

Slag dumping and water granulation are the most commonly used slag treatment methods in the metallurgical industries. In both processes, water is present (by desire for cooling and dispersion or as a result of rain accumulation) and thus equipment and operations are designed to minimize and mitigate the risk of steam explosions resulting from the inappropriate contact of slag with water. Slag handling practices have, therefore, never been inherently safe; even good design, operation, and maintenance are not sufficient to prevent explosions or other related injuries from occurring. For slag handling to become inherently safe, our industry must eliminate the potential contact of water with molten slag. This is today feasible with the advent of dry granulation technologies, a review of which is presented, and it thus falls to us, in the metallurgical sector, to lead the way in their final stages of development and adoption. Furthermore, while slag dumping and water granulation offer some metallurgists the means of valorizing their slag as a by-product, for most, this is not the case. The energy in slag is lost through dumping and water granulation processes, and where slag is sold as a by-product, it is for its chemical content only. Here, dry granulation processes also offer advantages including the production of by-products which hold value in both their chemical content and physical properties and heat recovery. Dry granulation, therefore, augments the methods by which slag may be valorized over traditional processing methods.

The Lac Otelnuk iron property is located in the Province of Québec in the Northern Labrador Trough. The Labrador Trough is an extensive geosyncline of Proterozoic rocks, unconformably underlain by Archean gneisses. The Lac Otelnuk iron property hosts two significant magnetite iron-formation taconite deposits that outcrop, are sub-horizontal and are known to extend for at least 25 kilometres along strike. The host sedimentary rock package that includes a cherty iron formation is weakly metamorphosed to greenschist facies.

In this work, structural and electronic properties of smithsonite (ZnCO3) and cerussite (PbCO3) as the typical lead-zinc oxide minerals is simulated by means of DFT. The calculated results could be concluded as: (1) The density of states (DOS) of Zn atom in ZnCO3 is nearer to the Fermi level than that of Pb atom in PbCO3, suggesting that the Zn atom of ZnCO3 is more active and easier to interact with water molecules and hydroxyl ions. Smithsonite, therefore, could be more readily depressed in the flotation process. (2) The bond population value of Zn-O (0.23) and C-O (0.92) in ZnCO3 is obviously larger than that of Pb-O (-0.01) and C-O (0.85) in PbCO3, indicating that the covalent characteristic of ZnCO3 is stronger than that of PbCO3. (3) It is shown that the charge of Pb (+1.32e) in PbCO3 is more positive than that of Zn (+1.22e) in ZnCO3, suggesting that cerussite is easier to interacting with HS- compared with smithsonite in the flotation process. In summary, the structural and electronic property of smithsonite is completely different with cerussite, leading to the difference of their flotation behaviour.

"Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common and reliable methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide concentrates. However, when processing concentrates that contain natural carbonaceous matter, substantial gold losses occur due to autoclave preg-robbing. The latter involves formation of gold chloride complexes under typical POX conditions (high temperatures, high acidity and high ORP) and subsequent sorption of these complexes by carbonaceous matter. Naturally, chloride ion plays a significant role in the process of autoclave preg-robbing; its concentration in POX solution has a well-marked effect on subsequent gold recovery during cyanidation of POX residue. The previous research done by SRC Hydrometallurgy showed that autoclave preg-robbing of gold could be significantly inhibited by the addition of mercury(II) compounds to POX slurry. The positive effect of mercury(II) was well pronounced both at high (>20 mg/L) and low (<5 mg/L) Cl concentrations in POX solution. The successful bench-scale laboratory testing was followed by pilot plant trials at Ore Test Facility in Blagoveshchensk, Russia. The present paper provides the results of these trials. The bench-scale testing results were verified; the optimum oxidizing parameters and reagent dosage were specified. The behavior of mercury (II) at POX pilot plant was found to be in good consistency with industrial practice described in the literature.INTRODUCTION Pressure oxidation (POX) is one of the most common, reliable, and commercially proven methods of processing gold-bearing sulfide ores and concentrates. However, when processing double refractory materials that contain natural carbonaceous matter, POX technology advantages are compromised by autoclave preg-robbing of gold. The latter occurs when natural organic carbon and soluble halides are both present in autoclave feed. Strongly oxidizing conditions of POX (high temperature, oxidation-reduction potential or ORP, and acidity) favor formation of gold-halide (mostly, gold-chloride) complexes, which tend to bond with carbonaceous matter. The exact nature and mechanism of this bonding is unknown, but as the result of this, cyanide is unable to leach gold from POX residue and the precious metal is lost to the tails (Axenov et al., 2014; Dimov, Chryssoulis, & Sodhi, 2003; Fomenko, Zaytsev, Pleshkov, Chugaev, & Shneerson, 2013)."
