Quality and durability of sprayed concrete depends on the concrete mix design, the type and use of accelerator and all the aspects of the placement onto the rock surface in the underground working. A large number of influence factors are involved and they must be managed for a successful and durable permanent sprayed concrete structure to be produced. The paper discusses some of the central issues, including how to view the long-term effects of chemical admixtures and accelerators in wetmix sprayed concrete. Permanent lining sprayed concrete for rock support is increasingly being used today and the durability can be equally achieved as for any other concrete.

Experiments with some selected Nova Scotia coals and a single sample of American anthracite, reconstituted in granular form with lower sulphur and ash contents by spherical agglomeration methods, are described. The effect of different bridging liquids, grinding times, gangue depressents and modes of agitation on the final product are discussed. The application of agglomeration techniques as a means of drying wet coal fines is also noted.

"In mineral resource and ore reserve estimation, several sources of information are generally available, such as diamond drillholes, reversed-circulation drillholes, and blastholes, and originate from one or more sampling campaigns and are analyzed by one or more laboratories. In such a situation, the grade measurements may not have the same precision and one should distinguish between hard and imprecise data.This work aims at studying the impact of data imprecision in resource/reserve evaluation through two case studies on simulated deposits: a porphyry copper deposit conditioned to real exploration and production data, and a gold deposit simulated without any conditioning data. Several geostatistical techniques are used to estimate the grades of selective mining units from exploration samples, including kriging, cokriging, lognormal and indicator kriging. Two types of imprecision are examined— measurements with multiplicative errors and measurements defined as intervals. The results are compared to the simulated grades of the selective mining units from a statistical and economic viewpoint.The study concludes that imprecise measurements should never be discarded because they help to improve the estimates, and that simple methods such as kriging are as efficient as more sophisticated ones for resource/reserve assessment. Finally, a few indications on how to diagnose and model the data imprecision are given."

This paper builds on presentations made at the Conference of Metallurgists (COM) 2015, COM 2017 and Extraction 2018 and associated papers published in the respective conference proceedings. Based on the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” the paper describes how metal mining can be compatible with sustainable development and how sustainability considerations have been applied in the primary copper industry, using several examples of sustainable mining practices from ASARCO LLC operations. Finally, the paper discusses how these considerations might be used in the future by discussing the need for developing a sustainable development strategy and how this strategy can be aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. INTRODUCTION The primary copper industry comprises: mining (also referred to as “extraction”); mineral processing (also referred to as “beneficiation, “milling” or “concentration,”) which includes leaching, solvent extraction (SX), crushing, grinding, froth and flotation operations; and metallurgical processing which includes smelting and converting; refining, which includes fire-refining or anode refining and electro-refining; and electrowinning (EW). There are two routes for producing refined copper: hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical. The hydrometallurgical route comprises mining (open-pit and underground), mineral processing (crushing and grinding — for heap leaching only; leaching and SX) and metallurgical processing (EW). The pyrometallurgical route involves mining, mineral processing (crushing, grinding and froth flotation) and metallurgical processing (smelting, fire refining and electro- refining). The primary copper industry is capital, water, resource and energy intensive with the potential for significant environmental impacts, if the environmental aspects are not properly managed. ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting And Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co-products. Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V (Grupo México) acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills, two leach, SX-EW plants, a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper electrolytic refinery in Texas.

A GEOLOGICAL study seeking to determine, for economic purposes, the value of the Sydney coalfield as a source of coal supply. Limitations of the coalfield come under two main heads: (a) Areal extent of the undersea coalfield. (b) The distance from shore at which coal can be mined at a cost of production permitting its profitable sale. Conclusions reached are that the areal extent of seams below the Phalen seam is of. small economic importance, and that non-persistence of these seams in full thickness and quality in the undersea extension of the coalfield will put an end to profitable mining before any limitations connected with distance from the shore-line become operative. With respect to the Phalen seam, non-persistence or deterioration of the seam will become effective in the western part of the coalfield, and less certainly in the eastern part of the coalfield, before operation of limitations by distance from shore. In the central portion of the coalfield, the seam probably persists in commercially workable thickness and quality to beyond the limit of mining set by distance from the shore-line. With respect to the seams above the Phalen seam between the Mountain fault on the extreme western boundary of the coalfield and the assumed termination of the deposition area on the eastern extremity of the field near South Head of Morien, there appear to be only such limitations as arise from engineering approach, distance from shore, sufficiency of strata cover between the sea-floor and the upper coal seams, and quality of the coal (with certain reservations as to the continuity of the upper seams under Sydney harbour and in the Sydney Mines-Little Bras d'Or district). Some of these seams have fragmentary land outcroppings from which their persistence seaward is assumed, and there may be other and still higher seams in the strata column which are entirely submarine.

A considerable part of the sulphuric acid requirements of the Aluminum Company of Canada's Arvida smelter comes from the burning of 180-200 tons per day of zinc '"'sulphide concentrates in a 22-ft.-diam-eter fluidized bed roaster. The plant and its operation were fully de-scribed in a publication that appeared about ten year ago (1). A simplified flowsheet of the roasting and gas-cleaning sections of the plant is given in Figure 1. The wet zinc sulphide concentrates are un-loaded into a pug mixer, by means of a Pay loader, and mixed with water in a mixing tank to make a slurry of 80 per cent solids. The slurry is transferred to a .feed tank and then introduced into the roaster at a point four feet above the constriction plate, which is the height of the settled bed of zinc calcines. It is well known that in situ stress measurements at a given site will generally display significant variability. However, it appears that a robust analysis of such measurements – i.e., one that is faithful to the tensorial nature of the data – is not available. Despite the fact that stress is a tensor, stress magnitude and orientation have long been analyzed separately using classical statistics. In earlier work we demonstrated the applicability of tensor statistics to the analysis of stress variability. Here, we investigate further the difference between tensor and classical statistics with respect to the stress tensor correlation matrix. Our analysis commences with the selection of a series of valid correlation matrices. Then, assuming that standardized tensor components follow the multivariate standard normal distribution, these correlation matrices are used to generate marginal probability distributions of the eigen-parameters (i.e., principal stress magnitude and rotation angle). From these, random stress tensors are generated, their eigenparameters determined, and the probability density distributions of these obtained using both classical and tensor statistics. Our results indicate that, for all correlation matrices, both methods give practically identical distributions for principal stress magnitude. However, the discrepancy between the two methods with regard to probability density distribution of rotation angle is highly dependent on stress component correlation. This discrepancy is usefully quantified in terms of the integral, with respect to orientation, of the difference between the two probability density distributions. This parameter, which we term Area Difference, is closely linked to the magnitude of the correlation matrix determinant, which itself is related to the normal stress correlation coefficient (i.e., ?x ,?y ??). Assuming that Area Difference should not exceed 0.1, we identify the critical determinant for any particular value of normal stress component correlation coefficient. Thus, using published in situ stress data and the obtained critical determinants, we show that for a specific normal stress component coefficient, when the correlation matrix determinant is less than its critical determinant, the more precise tensor statistics should be used to calculate the distribution of rotation angle. These results demonstrate that the customary analysis of stress measurement data may lead to erroneous results, and that tensor statistics appears to be preferred approach.

Industrial mineral production in Alberta, worth $468 million in 1997, comes from a dozen types of industrial minerals, mined by about 400 producers. Cement and lime from Paleozoic limestone formations exposed along the Rocky Mountains account for the greatest production value. Sand andgravel is the primary source ofmineral aggregate. Almost two-thirds of this aggregate is consumed in the Edmonton and Calgary regions. Sulphur produced at 48 sour gas processing plants and two oil sands plants was valued at $84.8 million in 1997 and accounted for 80% ofCanadian sulphur production. Four companies solution mine the Elk Point salt beds to produce chlor-alkali chemicals, industrial salt and sodium chlorate. Natural brine is also produced as a dust control product. Al $22 million, peat moss is a major industrial mineral product in Alberta. Other minerals with noteworthy production include shale, stone, silica and ammolite. The commodities with the greatest development potential are diamond, silica and oil sands tailings by-product minerals.

Standard depressants used in the selective separation of copper and molybdenum sulfides by flotation pose environmental and health hazards. In this investigation, the floatability of chalcopyrite and molybdenite in the presence of six well-characterized lignosulfonates was studied through Hallimond tube flotation and adsorption tests. The results define the physicochemical conditions (lignosulfonate type and dosage, pH, presence of ions) for possible selective separation of molybdenite from chalcopyrite. Dissolved polyvalent cations, especially calcium, appear to serve as "activators" for lignosulfonate adsorption on both minerals. From this point of view, the use of lime as a pH modifier is not always appropriate for optimum selectivity since high dosages of lime to produce high pH tend to indiscriminately depress both sulfides.

Conditional simulation is now an accepted tool for managing ore block design at a number of operating mines. It provides a way to consider the quality of data, local continuity and economic risk in defining ore and waste across the cut-off boundary. In addition a computer based system can ensure consistency in making decisions to meet multiple criteria such as cut-off grades, minimum ore-block size and contaminant grade limits. The development of a procedure for using multiple criteria allows ore blocks to be defined using alternative strategies depending on the specific production requirements. This has introduced the opportunity to define ore blocks for different destinations based on their material types and opens the way for geometallurgical modelling to be incorporated into grade control.

"AbstractThe Cardium formation of northeastern British •Columbia •contains an erosional unconformity that becomes progressively more severe northward until, •at Liard river, the stratigraphic hiatus eliminates the underlying Lower •Cardium sandstone, the Kaskapau formation, and the upper Dunvegan sandstones. The area of unconformity roughly coincides with the distribution of the continental facies of the earlier Dunvegan formation. Along Wapiti river, the zone fossil Scaphites ventricosus Meek and Hayden is found in the Bad-heart member of the overlying Wapiabi shale; Scaphites :preventricosus. Cobban marks the base of the Wapiabi shale; Scaphites cf. corvensis •Cobban is found in the middle shale member of the •Cardium formation. The log of the Red-Willow No. 1 well shows close similarity to the outcrop sections south of Wapiti river. The Cardium formation is mainly late Turonian in age. Two other pre-Cardium Turonian sands of north-eastern British Columbia are named the Wartenbe and Tuskoola sands.IntroductionTHE Upper Cretaceous Cardium (Bighorn) sandstone formation of the Foothills of northeastern British Columbia carries within its formational limits an erosional unconformity. The unconformity decreases to the southeast, becoming in immediate shoreline regions, now under the plains, a minor diastem. Such diastems, or stratigraphic intervals of non-deposition, occurring in the shallow unda-zone are paralleled in the deeper portions of the unda-zone by the phenomena of sub-aqueous winnowing. '.This winnowing and re-working •at critical depths creates sand areas with porosity."

The region is bounded on the south by the northwestern United States, on the west by the continental shelf and Alaska, on the north by the front of the Ogilvie Mountains, on the northeast by the axis of the MacKenzie Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountain Trench.The region is dominated by two mountain chains that con tain icefields and glaciers: the St. Elias, Coast and Cascade Mountains in the west; the Selwyn, Pelly, Cassiar, Omineca and Columbia Mountains in the east. The Intermontane region between these mountain chains consists of lower mountains and plateaus. In the mountains, the region above the timberline and many of the steep valley-walls provide good exposures of rock, but these areas are subject to rockslides and landslides and in winter to snow avalanches. Much of the Western Cordillera was covered by ice-sheets at various times during the Pleistocene epoch. Consequently, the larger valleys in the mountains and much of the Intermontane region contain much glacial drift and alluvium and only limited exposures of rock. This same terrain in the Southern Cordillera, however, is the most favourable for agriculture. Parts of the region, particularly in the two mountain chains, are heavily forested. Elsewhere, the forest cover is less, with grassland prevailing in the south and tundra in the north."

"As study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between mill liner wear and grinding energy efficiency and to assess the opportunity to control mill speed to improve energy performance as mill liner wears. The study involved analysis of plant operating data and liner wear profiles over time. The operating work index was found to be an effective tool to identify the decrease of grinding efficiency along the liner service. The plant data show that the mill grinding efficiency as determined by monitoring the operating work index, and throughput decreases as liner wears. However, efficiency and throughput can be maintained by either changing the liner more frequently or by increasing the mill speed. Two scenarios for increasing mill throughput were analyzed. The first one involves changing the liner before the efficiency drops and the second one requires increasing the mill speed from 75% to 79%. Both scenarios show financial benefits that can be used in mill operations.INTRODUCTION The analysis of the mill power draw is used in this study as a key parameter for comparing mill liner profile and its effect on mill performance. Current technology and simulation software used in the mining industry do not factor in the impact of liner wear profiles in grinding efficiency and mill throughput (Toor, 2013). To address this gap, this study provides an analysis of key factors affecting mill throughput and grinding efficiency: mill speed, ball loading, and liner profiles. Several years of plant mill operating data, published research papers, and MillTraj® simulation results are used to demonstrate that face angles impact grinding efficiency and throughput and that mill speed can be used to overcome this problem. Moreover, the liner profile wear analyses clarify a mismatch between actual and estimated power draw calculations."

"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). The metallurgical gas handling system at Chagres Smelter, like that of many smelters, can be the limiting constraint to processing more concentrate through the smelter. Mass and energy balances for the metallurgical gas handling system processing off-gases from the flash furnace and Peirce-Smith converters have been used by both operations and process engineering groups to help evaluate different operational scenarios in which the use of the installed capacity could be maximized and/or an operational strategy can be change with the purpose of removing a bottleneck or justifying an investment to relieve a constraint in the gas handling system. The present work describes the development of these process balances that were carried out in Exce®. The results were validated with operational data and, subsequently, some cases of industrial interest were simulated, detecting some conditions that were limiting the operation due to the present installed capacity in the Chagres Smelter.

"IntroductionThe coal deposits, all of lignite rank, of economic interest in Saskatchewan are associated with the Ravenscrag Formation (Paleocene). Several Cretaceous formations have less significant lignite accumulations (Broughton, Irvine and W'hitaker, 1974). The Swan River Group (lower Cretaceous) and Judith River Formation (upper Cretaceous) have the only coalbearing strata in the shallow subsurface of central Saskatchewan. The Swan River Group coalfield is relatively small and underlies only 15 sq km of the surface approximately 40 km south of La Ronge, Saskatchewan. An estimated 36 billion short tons are within 45 m of the surface. No reserve estimates are known to have been calculated for the coal-bearing Judith River Formation exposed at the surface in the vicinity of the South Saskatchewan River valley in west-central Saskatchewan. Although no coalfields have been delineated, lignite beds up to 1.8 m thick have been intersected in test holes. The coal-bearing upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary strata of the northern Williston Basin extends the full width of southern Saskatchewan for 650 km, and from the United States border 120 km north to 50° latitude (Fig. 1). Only the coalfields of the Ravenscrag Formation, because of their economic interest, will be considered further. There are four major coalfields. They are, from east to west: Estevan, Willow Bunch, Wood Mountain and Shaunavon (Cypress) coalfields. Cumulative lignite seam thickness for each basin is 10 -15 m (Figs. 2 and 3). The origin of each coal basin, resource calculations, seam stratigraphy, and mining activity are discussed. Regional Setting The Williston Basin is an ellipsoidal depression in the Precambrian basement, centered in western North Dakota and marginal to the exposed craton of northern Saskatchewan and central Manitoba (Fig. 1). The sediments of the basin range from Cambrian to Pleistocene in age and have a maximum known thickness of 4614 min western North Dakota. A maximum of 3200 m is recorded in southern Saskatchewan. Most structural deformation is late Cretaceous to early Tertiary (Paleocene) in age, coinciding with the Laramide Orogeny. The pre-Laramide Williston Basin, with a depocenter near Williston, North Dakota, began developing during the middle Ordovician, or possibly earlier."

This paper describes one approach in our search for greater stope efficiency and lower costs. The uppers technique with wagon drills in cut-and-fill stopes was commenced, on an experimental basis, in our Sudbury mines in 1961. To date, the method has developed into an accept-ed production operation. This technique minimizes the intermittent aspects of the drilling, blasting, mucking and filling operations associated with other cut-and-fill methods. However, studies show that not all cut-and-fill stopes are suitable for uppers, the governing factors being ore width, dip of the orebody, and ground conditions where large areas of unsupported back remain stable for ex-tended periods of time until rockbolting can be accomplished. Introduction F ALCONBRIDGE Nickel Mines Limited operates seven mines within a radius of 30 miles of the city of Sudbury, Ontario. These mines extend in depth from 1,500 to 6,300 ft. The ore consists of brecciated, massive and disseminated sulphides, and the ore minerals consist primarily of pentlandite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. Widths are generally irregular and vary up to 150 ft. The ore dips at between 35 and 90 degrees.

"The Scheelite Dome tungsten-bearing skarn property, central Yukon Territory, is in metasediments in contact with a quartz monzonite intrusion. Contact metamorphism to biotite-muscovite- andalusite hornfels and calc-silicate hornfels is superimposed on low-grade regionally metamorphosed rocks represented by quartz-mica pelitic schist and muscovite-biotite pelitic schist.Metasediments are likely Precambrian in age, even though Rb-Sr whole-rock analyses indicate an early Paleozoic age (511±41 Ma); this apparently too young radiometric age is due to partial loss of radiogenic strontium during regional metamorphism. The minimum age of the quartz monzonite intrusion is Cretaceous at 90.4±2.6 Ma (K-Ar on biotite) and its initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio is 0.7121. The high initial ratio of the intrusion is due to the addition of radiogenic strontium from the metasedimentary country rocks and perhaps an underlying older basement.Scheelite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite mineralization occurs in diopside-zoisite skarn pods within the calc-silicate hornfels near the quartz monzonite intrusion. The source for lithophile tungsten is probably the same as for the granitic magma, namely Precambrian sialic basement.IntroductionThe Scheelite Dome tungsten skarn property is within the Mc-Questen map-area (NTS: 115P/16),28 km northwest of Mayo, Y.T., at latitude 63°47' north and longitude 136°15' west. The property can be reached by helicopter or by four-wheel- drive vehicle from Mayo.This paper summarizes the geology of the Scheelite Dome property, which has been described in a general way by Little (1959) and Cathro (1969). Geological mapping and sampling were done by the first author (nee Steffler) during June 1979. Field work was supplemented with detailed work at the Department of Geological Sciences of The University of British Columbia during 1979 and 1980 (Steffler, 1980). Whole-rock chemical analyses were done by Cominco Ltd."
