SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. This paper reviews the likelihood of instability occurring within coking coal cargoes from BHP CoalÆs northern Bowen Basin mines. In coal cargoes, initial moisture redistributes vertically towards the base, saturating the bottom layers unless the bilge wells are pumped regularly. There has been concern in some quarters that saturated coal in the basal layer may be prone to liquefaction, and if the vessel then rolls significantly in rough seas, overall sliding movement of the cargo might occur. However, a review of shipping accident statistics reveals that casualties relating to shifting of coal cargoes are quite rare, and have not occurred in modern large bulk carriers (>15 000 dwt). The moisture redistribution process has been analysed to quantify the extent of cargo saturation that may occur. Results indicate that the amount of redistribution increases with initial moisture content above a threshold of eight to nine per cent. However, the removal of water by pumping from the bilges is remarkably effective in reducing the extent of saturated coal (and therefore the possibility of cargo liquefaction and movement), and in controlling the average moisture content of the bottom layers of cargo. Stability analyses were then performed for deep sliding of a cargo with a saturated and liquefied base. These have confirmed that sliding of a cargo with a liquefied base during rough seas (20¦ roll angles) would require initial total moisture content exceeding 13 per cent, the hold half full or less (width/depth >3), and no bilge pumping so that height of the saturated zone is as deep as possible. Overall, the results indicate that coking coal cargoes from BHP CoalÆs northern Bowen Basin mines will be unlikely to suffer sliding or liquefaction failures when transported in modern large bulk carriers.

This study explores two evolving 3D surveying technologies, photogrammetry and laser scanning, and applies them to deformation monitoring of rock faces and mine highwalls. A quantitative analysis focused on 3D coordinate determination is performed. Furthermore, a qualitative assessment directed at the practicality and viability of each system operating near a rock face or in a mining operation is undertaken to reveal one systemÆs deficiencies over the other. Two photogrammetric and four laser scanning surveys aimed at optimising accuracy and precision within a short period of data acquisition are conducted on the rock face at Organ Pipes National Park, Keilor, Victoria. The accuracy and repeatability of each survey is determined using a combination of iWitness photogrammetric, and Cyclone laser scanning software. The 3D coordinates of targets placed on the rock face are determined by triangulation and resection principles within a bundle adjustment. The coordinates determined by each system are then compared in a 3D transformation. Controlled deformation conditions are established to determine the precision to which each system can detect movement in the rock face. An object of known dimensions is placed on the rock face to simulate deformation. The relative orientation of images taken for the pre- and post-deformation photogrammetric surveys provide an overall 3D point accuracy of 1.255 mm and 1.804 mm respectively. A 3D transformation shows discrepancies of less than ¦22 mm (RMS) between the geometry of the photogrammetric and laser scanning models. Both systems are able to detect the simulated deformation to a precision of 50 mm. This work also identifies how to obtain millimetre accuracy for 3D coordinate determination of rock faces, thereby providing a quality data set for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists. Photogrammetry is shown to be a mobile, time and cost-effective technique that is more amenable to mining operations than terrestrial laser scanning. However, both systems demonstrate that they are capable of detecting movements that may lead to failures in the rock face, and possibly endangering human life. The implications are significant for surveyors, geotechnical engineers and mine geologists working in mining operations where enhanced safety conditions, increased productivity and lower operational costs are important considerations.

An integrated palynological and sedimentological investigation of four wells from the eastern margin of the Gippsland Basin has resulted in a scheme for classification of palynofacies in this area. Thirteen different palynofacies assemblages are recognised and assigned to particular environments based on the enclosing sediments, which range from alluvial, through coastal barrier to continental shelf environments. Close correlation is observed between the interpreted energy regime of the palynofacies assemblage, and that of the enclosing sediments. Assemblages characterised as reworking surfaces can be correlated with unconformity producing events (ie tectonic activity associated with the opening of the Tasman Sea), and some of the minor eustatic sea level Changes.

Devitrification of a glassy volcanic ash equivalent to an alkaline trachyte in composition has resulted in the formation of an interstratified illite-montmorillonite with an 1:1\1 content of 1:4 as the principal clay mineral.A high concentration of potassium ions and a deficiency of magnesium ions favoured the formation of the potassium-bentonite.A poorly ordered mica mineral, equivalent to illite, was produced by weathering of potassic feldspar. Subsequent degradation of the illite through the loss of potassium was responsible for the formation of several interstratified minerals with very approximate 1:1\1 contents of 4: I as minor components.Other authigenic minerals present in small amounts were u-cristobalite, sepiolite, and the zeolite clinopitolite.The non-swelling character of the potassium-bentonite makes it economically unattractive...

In salar-type deposits, lithium grades can be measured by bailers introduced at different elevations in the drill holes at locations where, later, the brine will be pumped out to recover the metal. When they are duplicated, these a priori rudimentary measurements may show large differences without indicating whether this is due to the procedure itself or to some physical causes linked to the dynamic behaviour of the salar (seasonality, rainfall, underground flow etc). In the reservoir presented in the paper, the problem is complicated by the double lack of stationarity of the lithium grades: the grades not only increase importantly with the depth but at the same time their fluctuations decrease, making it necessary to use non-stationary geostatistical techniques to simulate them. Reservoir simulation is developed in two steps: first, geostatistical simulations of the lithium grade create possible realisations of the reservoir; then, each geostatistical simulation is followed by a pumping simulation that calculates, at each drill hole of a given extraction scenario, the lithium produced each year over 40 years. For the set of 100 simulations produced in this way, a scenario reduction is made to choose the five most representative simulations where more complex calculations will be carried out (for example, changing hydrogeological parameters such as porosity and permeability, or the elevation of the filters, the number and the location of the pumping and the reinjection drill holes etc). The paper first presents an analysis of the geostatistical model sensitivity to the grade uncertainty when measured by bailer. Among the 100 measurements at our disposal covering the future production domain, 50 per cent are duplicates measured at the same place but at different times. They are randomly sampled to produce five subsets of 75 values, which will constitute the future 3D conditioning points for the geostatistical analysis and the simulations. For each subset, trend, standard deviation and variogram models are fitted, leading to five sets of 20 geostatistical simulations of grades. In this way, the reliability of the different parameters involved in the procedure is evaluated, as well as its impact on the pumping results. Then, a reconciliation study is conducted between the non-stationary nugget effects encountered in the 3D variograms of the lithium grade and a pure statistical analysis of 25 duplicates measured at different locations and/or different times. The result is that if the nugget effect reaches 20 per cent, which is the case of three conditioning subsets out of five, the reconciliation is good and the nugget effect of the variogram model represents the bailer uncertainty, ie the measurement error. Since the geostatistical simulation incorporates a nugget effect, it handles the bailer uncertainty and the impact on the produced metal is included in the evaluation. The final conclusion is that, after the hydrogeological pumping simulations, the initial differences between the five geostatistical models do not influence the final results: lithium grades measured by bailers can lead to a robust evaluation of the extractable resources, a conclusion that conflicts with conventional wisdom.CITATION:Séguret, S A, Goblet, P, Cordier, E and Galli, A, 2017. Two types of Mt Tom Price hematite iron ore from Hamersley Iron P/L were tested using a Humboldt Wedag Jones P40 wet high intensity magnetic separator (WHIMS). The parameters tested were magnetic intensity (7000, 9000 and 11 000 Gauss), groove plate type (8R and 12R) and gap width (2.5 and 1.8 mm). It was found that at 9000 gauss magnetic intensity, reasonably high-grade and recovery in the concentrate were obtained. At 2.5 mm plate gap width, the 12R groove plate performed slightly better than the 8R groove plate. Further testwork is recommended to optimise the magnetic intensity, feed flowrate and pulp density, wash water pressure and flowrate with 12R and 8R groove plates at 2.5 mm gap width.

A simulation model was used to study the performance of various types of screen cloth on industrial vibrating screens. The model takes into account the effect of loading upon screen performance and predicts both themass flow rate and size distribution of the screen products.It was found that the use of the simulation model allowed the reconstruction of data for identical conditions and hence has simplified the analysis of the comparative performance of the screens. The dependence of performance upon operating conditions was found to vary markedly with screen cloth type.

"Considerable metal values are often locked in stockpiles (ore, concentrates, heap leach pads, slags, reverts, etc.) and process equipment (bins, holding tanks, thickeners, etc.). This is more than enough to justify accurate accounting of such in-process metal inventories from both financial accounting and operational perspective. However, accurately determining the metal inventory of an in-process unit is often a challenge in industrial practice. Audits have shown that available indirect or direct measurements often carry large inaccuracies. Sooner or later, ignoring these measurement errors lead to unexpected incoherencies in reported metal balances. In such situations, coherent metal balances are then achieved through subjective and sometimes significant adjustments of in-process inventory levels. While such metal accounting methods applied by mineral processing engineers used to be rarely challenged, they are now being increasingly scrutinised by various stakeholders. Hence, metal accounting procedures that mitigate subjectivity in adjustments while still coping with the unavoidable uncertainty are more relevant than ever.This paper reviews three different metal accounting methods for reporting in-process metal inventory values. Their individual application strongly depends on the available measurements i.e. The indirect method where the metal inventory of a given process unit is determined by subtracting the cumulative reclaim from the cumulative feed carries important flaws. The direct method also comes with challenging accuracy issues so that emptying a process unit is often the best available inventory measurement. This reality is recognised for by further analysing a previously proposed operating mode where two interchangeable process units are alternately used. The third investigated method is the redundant method which combines indirect and direct methods for a given process unit. Computer applications are ideally suited to the day to day operations of grade control and short term planning on a mine site. By refining this part of the operation there is scope to increase profits by more accurately predicting ore grade and tonnage, and allowing the mining engineer more flexibility in his approach to scheduling. Large numbers of blasthole or ditchwitch samples need to be processed in a fast and efficient manner, and stored in a database for future reference. The mining engineer has to calculate tonnages and subdivide the blast or digging area into mineable areas of waste, low and high grade ore. New grade and tonnage information must be used by the mining engineer to update his short term plan. Answers must be obtained quickly and efficiently, but a high level of individual input is necessary in order that maximum use is made of the information. Geostatistical analysis of samples can be used to refine the interpolation techniques. Reconciliation between the original grade model, the newly sampled area, and the final product should be monitored continually.

In the Ngakuru area zeolite deposits occur in late Quaternary lacustrine vitric tuffs of the Ngakuru Formation and two of the deposits are being mined. The Ngakuru Formation overlies the Ohakuri Ignimbrite dated at c. 240 ka, and is overlain by younger alluvial sands and gravels. Individual zeolite deposits contain 50 - 80 per cent zeolite over a thickness of up to 45 m in thinly stratified vitric tuffs and are localised along NE-trending normal faults. Glass shards in the tuffs are replaced by the silica-rich zeolites mordenite and clinoptilolite. Amorphous silica (opal A), opal-CT, Kfeldspar and smectite are also present. The zeolites and other minerals are very fine grained (<10 8m), with open meshes of crystals that result in high porosities (52 - 70 per cent) in mordenite-rich tuffs. Zeolitic tuff samples typically have cation exchange capacities of 80 to 110 meq/100 g and internal surface areas of 25 - 58 m2/g, which combine to give high liquid and odour absorption capacities. The first zeolite deposit (Mangatete) was found in 1992, and this and the Twist Road deposit are worked by quarry benching into the side of hills. The zeolitic tuffs are dried and crushed to produce a variety of products including adsorbents for soaking up oil/chemical spills and animal wastes, animal feed supplements, water treatment, and sports turf and slow release fertiliser. The Ngakuru zeolite deposits formed at shallow depth (<100 m) along fault zones from reaction of glass-rich tuff beds with groundwater-diluted geothermal water during the late Quaternary, and are as young as 8500 yr BP from 14C dating of plant material in sinter associated with the Mangatete deposit.

The object of this paper is to give a description of the new office and changehouse building and equipment at the Zinc Corporation Limited, the office section of which has now been in full use for approximately three years, and the changehouse section for approximately two years. As the expectations of the design have been fully realized, it is thought that this description will be of interest to members and possibly of some use to others faced with similar problems.GENERALIn the centralization of the surface plant around the new main shaft the combined office and changehouse building forms a prominent feature, being located between the shaft and the mill and facing the workshops on the northern side.The scheme for housing all employees in one building was proposed by the Manager, Mr. A. J. Keast, who was familiar with a similar successful structure built at the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Ltd. in Ontario, Canada.The principal features of this building were adopted as a basis for design, and the present layout evolved to suit the particular requirements of this mine.Some of the advantages of the design are:(a) Economy in first cost and space occupied when compared with plants having separate office and changehouse buildings.(b) Easier and more constant supervision of employees and of the plant by the senior staff members.(c) Close contact between officials of all departments.(d) Close covered connection between changehouse and shaft.(e) Avoidance of duplication of ,essential services such as electric power, water, heating plant, sewerage, etc.The Managing Director, Mr. W. S. Robinson, further instructed that the following requirements be adhered to in the new building:(a) Ample accommodation to be provided for office staff and other employees.(b) Special attention to be paid to lighting, both natural and artificial.(c) Working temperatures to be controlled to facilitate comfort and efficiency.(d) The buildings and equipment' to be of a permanent nature with furnishings and fittings of modern design.

The igneous intrusions in SE Papua New Guinea are part of a sub-volcanic to plutonic, high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic suite. High-K andesitic to dacitic intrusives on Misima and Woodlark Islands, and shoshonitic intrusives in Milne Bay and the eastern Owen Stanley Ranges are related to late Cenozoic andesitic volcanism. Both suites are associated with epithermal Au-Ag deposits and weak porphyry Cu-Au mineralisation. All significant alluvial and lode gold occurrences in the region are spatially related to intrusions. Intrusions in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands and near Mt Suckling are core plutons related to basement doming, and appear to have no association with either volcanism or hydrothermal mineralisation. The core plutons are not petrochemi:ally distinct from the volcano-re:-ed Intrusions.

Five wells have been drilled in the Basker/Manta Block of VIC/P19, Gippsland Basin, resulting in sub-economic Intra-Latrobe Group oil and gas discoveries at Basker-1 and Manta-1. A total of 21 individual hydrocarbon bearing sandstones were intersected by the two wells. These reservoir sand bodies were deposited by fluvial processes in a lower coastal plain environment. The modelling of sand body orientation and geometry is a critical component in the evaluation of the two accumulations. Seismic resolution of the thin (average 2 m to 5 m) sand bodies is inadequate for mapping their orientation and distribution. Dipmeter data has been successfully applied to the problem of orienting the sand bodies using FMS images acquired during the drilling of Gummy-1 and reprocessed HDT data from Basker-1 and Manta-1. Prediction of lateral extensiveness (geometry) of individual sand bodies has also been attempted. Interpreted palaeocurrent direction from all three wells is dominantly from the NW to the SE. Reservoirs in the Manta-1/Gummy-1 area are interpreted to be predominantly channel sands, deposited by relatively low sinuosity streams. As such they would tend to have a laterally extensive, elongate geometry. Sand bodies deposited in the Basker-1 area show a predominance of laterally accreted cycles deposited by meandering streams. Channel geometry may then be limited in the downstream/upstream direction by internal permeability barriers such as clay plugs.

The copper-clay deposits consist largely of goethite and clayey mudstones carrying native copper, cuprite, and chalcocite. The mudstones are of Ordovician age, are interbedded with Fe-Mn carbonates, and probably contained syngenetic iron and copper sulphides. The secondary copper minerals have been derived from post-Devonian weathering in situ and also by deposition from surfaee and underground waters draining the adjacent mineralized volcanic rocks.

Upon cessation of mining activity open-cast mine pits typically fill with water, forming a æpit-lakeÆ. The water in these lakes, in some instances, contains high concentrations of ædeleteriousÆ material. Containment and/or dilution typically requires an understanding of how stratification in the pit-lake will develop over a long timescale (say 100 years). Vastly different transport rates can develop due to differing hydrogeochemistry, basin morphology and climate. Numerical (computer) modelling is the most likely approach for successful prediction over long times. While lake modelling tools are available, useful numerical modelling requires improved understanding of transport in such systems because they are different to natural lakes in a number of ways. Notwithstanding the effort required to improve our understanding, the modelling provide a means of testing approaches to active management of pit-lakes.

Some 800 analyses for Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag, Fe, S, CaO, MgO, C02, Si02 and Al203 were used to examine the elemental constitution of the Mount Isa ores, and, for comparison, those of the Northern Leases area.Lead: zinc relations show little order from sample to sample, but means of large zones (Le. individual orebodies) show a highly linear inverse relationship. Lead: silver ratios are fairly constant from sample to sample, and means show a highly linear direct relationship.Sulphide sulphur appears to be related to carbonate and alumina abundance, sulphur decreasing systematically with increase in the ratio CO2:AI203. In all graphs involving members of the group CO2-A203-S the lead-zinc and copper ores conform to the same simple trends, confirming that the two ore types and their host rocks are genetically closely related. The earlier deduction of a volcanic-sedimentary origin for the sulphides of the Black Star orebodies appears compatible with present findings.On the basis of such an origin, the pattern of sulphide occurrence and mineralogy in the Mount Isa district is possibly related to the configuration f the upper surface of the "Eastern Creek Volcanics", the facies patterns of the overlying sedimentary rocks, and to the oldest faults affecting the two.INTRODUCTIONStanton (1962) described and interpreted the chemical constitution of the Black Star No. 2 lead-zinc and the 650750 copper orebodies at Mount Isa. The investigation has now been extended to the other principal orebodies of the area.The earlier study showed that the host rocks of the two adjacent Black Star orebodies were constitutionally closely related, and suggested that this was probably due to their original formation in contiguous zones of sedimentation. On this basis the silica-dolomite of the copper ore appeared to represent the slightly more shoreward, "limey" member, probably a fairly massive algal calcareous sediment laid...

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Nam San copper-gold deposit was discovered in 2011 and is a likely blind extension of the Permian age Phu Kham structurally deformed porphyry/skarn copper-gold deposit.The Nam San mineralisation is hosted within a dominantly sericite altered schist unit located to the north of the current Phu Kham open pit operation and is overthrust by an allochthonous barren cover sequence of limestone, granite and sandstone. Reinterpretation of the Phu Kham geology developed the concept of a possible telescoped porphyry copper-gold system at depth. Initial drilling intersected remobilised copper mineralisation in a basal conglomerate, confirming the concept. A reconnaissance vector array induced polarisation (IP) survey identified a deep chargeability anomaly from which a drilling target was developed from 3D inversion modelling of a detailed follow up dipole-pole-dipole anomaly. Drilling of the chargeability anomaly intersected the blind Nam San copper-gold mineralisation beneath the thrusted cover sequence.The key discovery parameters are the result of an integrated exploration program that included reinterpretation of the local stratigraphy, which developed the concept of a deep blind orebody, IP surveys capable of penetrating through the barren cover and a commitment to a deep directional drilling program to test these concepts and targets.
