An evaluation of a pilot scale Delkor horizontal belt filter at Bellambi's South Bulli Colliery showed high productivities and low moisture contents for a range of feed slurries. When treating flotation concentrate, a productivity in excess of 1000 kg/m2/hr (dry) at a moisture content of less than 22 per cent was obtained. The results indicated the belt filter had a capacity twice that of conventional drum or disc filters, and was capable of dewatering a very fine, thickened, classifying cyclone overflow slurry to an acceptable moisture content. The superior performance of this filter is discussed in terms of the factors influencing cake formation and the stratification of solids in the filter bowl of a conventional rotary vacuum drum filter.

It has been proven theoretically and experimentally that the use of 10 - 30 per cent DRI in blast furnace along with iron ore or sinter results in lower coke rate and higher productivity. However, to-date this remains unpractised on a regular basis mainly because of economic reasons. The DRI produced by several methods are expensive and difficult to store/handle in large quantities because of its reactive nature and thus DRI in blast furnace remains unacceptable.

Segregation roasting was used to recover more than 85 per cent of copper from crushed, minus 14 mesh refractory furnace-lining bricks. A plus 14 mesh fraction: which was high in copper, could be recycled directly to the smelter, giving an overall recovery of approximately 90 per cent. An oxidation roast at about 700°C was necessary, before segregation roasting, to convert copper sulphides and copper metal to sulphates and oxides. Withsegregatron temperatures in the range 600°-650°C the quantities of solid carbon and NaCI required are 2-5 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. P.V.C. coating from scrap copper wire can be used instead of NaCl as asource of hydrogen chloride for the segregation reaction.

Copper mineralization associated with minor molybdenum, silver, and gold occurs in a hydrothermally altered brecda within a granodiorite mass of Upper Permian age. A dyke system of rhyolite, dacite, and andesite forms plug-like bulges near the breccia and probably caused mineralization as a late stage effect.Base metal sulphides occur as disseminations, fracture and cavity fillings in the breccia. A pyritic halo in hydrothermally altered granodiorite surrounds the breccia and grades into unaltered granodiorite. Drilling during 1969 indicated the grade is subeconomic.

A GREAT deal of attention has lately been given to the discussion as to the education required for engineers, and especially for mining engineers. The Institute of Civil Engineers has had a committee's report on it which has come to some interesting and valuable conclusions.The Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had a few years back a very long discussion on the subject, and the subject appears to be one of perennial interest to similar societies. Two recent addresses by Prof. Kernot, as president of the Victorian Instituteof Civil Engineers, are among the most interesting and practical of the contributions to the discussion. Engineers seem to feel either that the coming generation has not the same capacity to benefit by the training that has made themselves what they are, or that such training has turned out in themselves inefficient men, and that they must consequently struggle to obtain a better one for their successors. For not only is there a desire to extend existing instruction to cover the advances of science, but there seems to be a general desire also to make a completely radical change in the methods.It is not necessary to observe that education does not mean the imparting and acquiring of information, but rather the cultivation of the faculties so that the best use can be made of them and of any information acquired. For instance, a man is not educated who has by heart his lectures and the contents of his text-books, but that man is who remembers little of the actual wording of his text-books, but is able to find anything required in them...

Being a source of structural materials for many centuries, the modern image of the ferrous metallurgy is burdened with obsolete technologies with disregard towards new environmental protection requirements. The production cycle of metallurgical products have two clear-cut stages: I . production of liquid metal and casting into steel billets; and 2. processing of steel billets in solid state under high temperature to produce various shapes and profiles of metal products. Plastic deformation of metal at the second stage is least associated with environmental pollution and is presently being provided with more and more advanced equipment.

The acid plant consists of the following units: 1. Glover tower. 6. Mills-Packard type chambers. 3. Reaction towers. 6. Gay-Lussac towers.The sulphur dioxide bearing gases, used in the manufacture of the acid, are obtained from the roasting of zinc concentrate. Six Herreshoff type furnaces are available, each with an effective hearth area of 520 sq. ft.The concentrate contains approximately 30% sulphur, of which about 72 is ultimately recovered as acid. The oxides of nitrogen are added to the gases in the requisite proportions partly from nitrous vitriol and from nitric acid in the Glover tower, and partly from nitrous vitriol in some of the chambers and connecting flues.The acid leaving the Glover tower is cooled by the ordinary water-cooling coils, while the cooling of the chamber gases is effected by circulating water over the outer surface of the chambers, and by spraying nitrous vitriol and weak acid into them.Flow of gases throughout the plant is regulated and controlled by means of regulus metal fans, fitted with variable speed gears.

This paper reports a biogeochemical study of the Siberia lode of the Herberton tin field. Soil near the orebody contained high levels of Fe, Cu, Pb, Sn, As, Mld Mn. Polycarpaea spirostylis and Indigofera dominii were associated with these high levels but several other species apparently could not tolerate them. The potential of these species as indicator plants is discussed.

The combustion of brown coals in Latrobe Valley power stations produces approximately 500 000 tonnes of solid wastes each year. This material, which includes precipitator ash, char and furnace ash, is hydraulically sluiced to large ashing ponds and the supernatant solution is ultimately discharged to the sea. There are significant operational and capital costs associated with the current ashing system. The ash produced from the Latrobe Valley coals is unique and has a wide variety of potential applications including soil conditioning, concrete and cement extenders, fillers in non-metallic materials, components of building products. In addition, with the application of appropriate technology, it is possible to extract char, sodium sulphate, calcium carbonate and magnesium metal (as the chloride) in substantial quantities from the ash. Research has been carried out to explore the prospects of these various options for ash utilisation. The research has focused on detailed characterisation of the ash material and the potential extraction efficiency for various species under various conditions. From this work a conceptual process has been developed and subsequent studies have been directed towards understanding variables and optimising operating regimes for product extraction. Currently, the work is concentrating on the separation of char, the development of high-grade carbon products and the extraction of sodium sulphate.

Host-rock û wallrock major and trace element geochemistry associated with epithermal gold mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand is poorly documented, even though rock geochemistry is a recognised tool in exploration. Such responses assist in recognition of the regional scale imprint of fossil hydrothermal activity, and indicate targets for detailed evaluation within these alteration zones.   Recent investigation of gold deposits in the Waihi (Gladstone), Golden Cross (Empire), Thames (Waiotahi) and Coromandel (Tokatea) areas indicate enrichments of Au, As and Sb in the andesitic wallrocks hosting mineralisation. Of the other elements examined, Si, K and Rb are enriched, and Na, Ca, and Sr are depleted at all deposits. These trends are best developed in the vicinity of veining. In deposits with clay alteration dominating (Waiotahi and Tokatea) there is also depletion of Mg, Mn, Zn and Cu. Ba and Cr are variably enriched or depleted within different styles of alteration. Base-metal enrichment in the wallrocks is not a feature of Hauraki deposits.

A theoretical model for gas outbursts in underground coal mines is as follows. An outburst is the structural failure ofcoal due to excess stress resulting from body forces caused by gas pressure gradients. These body forces influence the stability of a mine face in the same manner that gravitational body forces affect the stability of the roof of a mine. The magnitude ofthese body forces can be appreciated when it is realized that for an average density coal, the gravitational body force is equal in magnitude to the force from a gas flow with a pressure gradient of 14 kPa m-I. Gas pressure gradients and the resultant stresses within a seam can be calculated with numerical methods. Thus, providing the necessary parameters can be measured or estimated, in principle the theory can be applied to compare the outburst risk of various mining arrangements.

The Autogenous Kelsey Axial Displacement (KAD) mill is essentially a short retention time centrifugal mill, designed to effectively harness extraordinarily high concentrations of input energy for efficient particle size reduction. The mill which has an operating duty band extending from primary to ultra-fine also has the unique capacity to generate fine and ultra-fine products from single stage size reductions of either coarse or fine mineral feeds, in both wet or dry operating modes. This paper covers developments following a recent optimisation programme which confirmed that mill shell speed and the velocity differential between the shell and the rotating internal disc assembly tips could be optimised in relation to specific energy for a given feed rate and feed size providing the product size remains constant. Subsequent test-work further demonstrated the versatility of the mill with duties ranging from the removal of surface contamination associated with heavy mineral concentrate particles to the production of premium ultra-fine talc, from a single stage of size reduction. Open circuit grinding of a rougher gravity concentrate to liberate gold ahead of leaching also highlighted the scope for the application of low cost KAD milling for a range of hydrometallurgical feed preparation duties, which involve fine and ultra-fine grinding.CITATION:Kelly, J and Kelsey, C, 2013. The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June, 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods.Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 ft. to over 100 ft. in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sub-level stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

In the deformation of a metal or a single-phase alloy all the crystals composing the metal after their shape in a similar manner as the metal in bulk and to about· the same extent. This is not the case in an alloy consisting of two phases of different resistance to plastic deformation. In such an alloy the two phases take part in the deformation approximately in inverse proportion to their hardness, at least at the beginning of the deformation. (1) The hardness difference becomes less in the course of the deformation and thereby the deformation more equal. The phenomena occurring during cold-rolling of some two-phase alloys have been investigated by H. Unckel who made statistical grain measurements of the degree of deformation of the two phases after various reductions by rolling and also microscopical observations of the flow in the neighbourhood of the grain boundaries. Because of the different relative flow of the two phases, the normal flow is disturbed in the vicinity of their boundaries, and some additional plastic flow must take place in these regions, the disturbance being levelled out at some distance from the boundary. The deformation of the two phases present simultaneously in the material should thus be different from that of each phase separately. The investigation of theimportance and the effects of this interaction of crystals of different phases is the subject of this paper.The deformation of crystals occurs as a gliding of crystal layers following crystallographic laws. In consequence of this slip the crystals composing the material tend to assume a common orientation, i.e. some crystallographic axes tend to become parallel to each other in all the crystals. The type of this preferred orientation depends on the type of the crystal and the working process. Any change in the mechanism of deformation results, therefore, in a change in the preferred orientation. Such a change in kind and degree of preferred orientation will, therefore, also occur if the interaction of crystals in a two-phase alloy gives rise to a mechanism of deformation different from that in the free phases.The present paper describes a study of the preferred orientation, the microstructure and hardness in wires of brass drawn to various extents.The development of preferred orientations in the two phases with increasing reduction was followed up in various layers of the wire.EXPERIMENTAL DETAILSThe experiments were carried out with a commercial 5 S.W.G. wire (0,212 in. diameter) containing: 62·7% Cu, 37·3% Zn, very faint traces...

The Hyde Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ) is an extensive low angle semibrittle mineralised structure in the Otago Schist Belt, New Zealand. The shear zone is located on the lower limb of a late metamorphic recumbent fold. Structural observations suggests that the shear zone initiated as a high strain mylonite zone and transgressed the ductile/brittle boundary (D4) later in its development. A surge zone at Round Hill is bounded to the south by a NE-SW striking lateral ramp which displaces the hanging wall shear (HWS) by 50 m. Oblique strike slip displacement during surge zone propagation created space for deposition of the sheeted vein complex or stockwork. Quartz recrystallisation in stockwork veins suggests that the veins were deformed in a ductile manner and implies that surge zone propagation may have occurred during late D3 deformation. A macroantiform was produced during D3/D4 shortening below the HWS. Over tightening of the antiform hinge created SW and NE-dipping ramp thrusts. Continued strike slip displacement along the lateral ramp rotated the antiform and associated ramps into a south plunging drag fold. Post-mineralisation (D5) structures include NE-dipping nonna! faults below the HWS and SW-dipping low angle imbricate thrusts above the HWS. The development of these structures was kinematically compatible with normal movement on the HMSZ and is related to mid Cretaceous break up of Gondwanaland in the SW Pacific.

An accurate knowledge of the chemical, mineralogical and physical characteristics of ores and mineral products that are mined, processed and traded is crucial to effective resource utilisation, plant design, process optimisation and finally quality control to ensure that contract specifications are met. However, all too often the responsibility for sampling is entrusted to managers and personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of collecting representative samples for analysis, and everyone seems satisfied as long as some material is collected and returned to the laboratory for analysis. Furthermore, sample stations incorporated into the design of new plants are often the first casualties when cost cutting exercises commence. This needs to change, because there is little point in accurately analysing samples if they are not representative in the first place. The resultant analyses can be next to meaningless and the effort taken to analyse such samples is to a large extent a waste of time and resources.Ultimately, a poor knowledge of the characteristics of ores and mineral products limits the ability of mining companies to optimise the life of ore resources and plant performance, and failure to meet final product specifications can have disastrous consequences, including price penalties and more seriously loss of sales contracts. It is high time that sampling is given the attention it deserves as the first critical step in the quality measurement chain.CITATION:Holmes, R J, 2013. ( The central part of the Gippsland Basin is surrounded by existing major Petroleum accumulations and although six exploration wells have been drilled in the area, none are significant petroleum discoveries. Post drilling analyses indicate that the wells were drilled off structure due to the presence of high-velocity Miocene channels. These channels contain carbonates of significantly higher interval velocity than the surrounding sediments. Problems with seismic interpretation were thus encountered in the development of prospects in the central part of the Gippsland Basin as part of a BMR prospectivity study. The seismic interpretation problems associated with the Miocene channels are two-way time pull-ups at the underlying top of Latrobe Group and deeper levels on the seismic sections. Interpreted seismic sections passing through some of the exploration wells and the Miocene channels are presented to illustrate the configurations of these channels and the pullup effect associated with them. Two different methods of depth conversion were applied, one for the area below the high velocity channels and the other for the area away from the channel. The application of these two methods of depth conversion were found to be reasonably successful in correcting for the pull-ups caused by the high velocity Miocene channels. Mapping of the events near the top of Latrobe Group and near Base Lower L balmei seismic horizons has led to the identification of several potential structural closures. Further exploration efforts are necessary in this area to test these closures.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the short wave infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420 nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a quartz-sericite-pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

In addressing the need for non-degree tertiary training, let us examine some recent reviews of engineering and geoscience education. The Finniston Report (1) criticised the formation of engineers in the UK and stated that this was largely due to the narrow British conception of engineering as a branch of applied science which militates against an effective marriage between theory and application. It also criticised the system for not giving students sufficient grounding in the synthesis of technical, human and financial considerations within their undergraduate courses. As we all know, this report has led to the restructuring of engineering education in the UK. More recently, a Review of the Discipline of Engineering was carried out in Australia by a committee chaired by Professor Sir Bruce Williams (2). The report stated that: Australia has a fairly good system of engineering education that should be made better. more should be done to develop the communication skills of both staff and students. more attention should be paid to changes in engineering practice and the human element in technology. there is a serious shortage of state of the art equipment in most engineering schools. female enrolments in engineering courses should be increased from the current level of about 7% to 20% by 1997. employers should develop a better understanding of the need for continuing education. staff in engineering schools should develop closer relations with employers of engineers. higher education institutions with engineering schools should give financial and other inducements to staff to increase the proportion of study leave or professional development leave spent working as engineers in the business sector. there is considerable room for improvements in the teaching process and in the development of evaluation schemes for assessing the teaching contributions of staff. In its recent report to the Council of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, the Task Force on Engineering Education(3) makes the following points: managerial, entrepreneurial, professional and interpersonal skills should be introduced and integrated into the undergraduate courses but studied in depth as part of continuing education. the continuing education policy of the Institution should be promoted and strengthened with all engineers required to pursue continuing education. the Institution should develop a comprehensive guide to continuing education available from universities, colleges and other public and private sector organisations.

Three methods of gold analysis are briefly described highlighting some of the problems and advantages of each. The variation of results between samples and splits and due to method of preparation is illustrated. The mean per cent difference of the fire assay values from the means of sample split values for three cases is 15 per cent.Finally, a comparison of the aqua regia leach atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and fire assay fusion AAS techniques is made.This shows that the mean precision, the ability to obtain the same value, of the methods at 98 per cent confidence is ± 30 per cent and ± 15 per cent respectively. The fire assay fusion AAS method is relatively more accurate than the aqua regia one.
