A critical appraisal of the wide variety of processes used in the pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals shows that there is a strong physico-chemical and, in particular thermodynamic, basis for the variety. Based on this, a simple classif- ication scheme has been developed which makes it possible to understand the methods for extracting individual metals and non-metals pyrometallurgically and to assess which are the more attractive routes. The analysis presented shows why there are essentially two broad routes for pyrometallurgical production of metals and non-metals; viz., the reduce- refine and the refine-reduce routes. Halides have the role in pyrometall- urgical processing of producing pure compounds for subsequent reduction. The criteria which determine the selection of reduction method for oxide raw materials and intermediate halides (e.g., use of carbon, hydrogen, a more reactive metal or electrowinning) are examined critically in the paper. The treatment of sulfide raw materials is considered also, particularly the criterion for smelting sulfides directly to the metal.

The completion of the Hot Strip Mill at the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Ltd., makes possible the production of steel plates and wide strip of a quality and in quantities not possible previously in Australia, and will also enable the production of tinplate to be undertaken in this country.The site chosen for the mill was a mud fiat underlain by a hard stone bottom at 5, to 801 feet below the surface; and a total area of one hundred acres was reclaimed to a level of 20 feet above the original surface.Three adjoining buildings were constructed to house the slab receiving yard, mill equipment and electric drive, together with the plate finishing line.After slabs have been heated to 2250°F at a rate of 90 tons per hour, they are transferred to the vertical scale breaker which is the first stand in the hot roughing mill. Here the primary furnace scale is first cracked and then blasted off by high velocity water descaling sprays.The next stand is the horizontal scale l;Jreaker, where any remaining primary scale is broken and then blasted off. After descaling, the slabs pass to the broadside mill, where short slabs are turned and rolled on broad side for wide plate.The next step is a slab squeezer which squares up the edges after broadsiding ready for the reversing mill. This is the finishing stand for plate and the last roughing stand for strip, which then passes to the finishing mill.The hot strip finishing mill consists of six stands with a maximum finishing speed of 2,230 feet per minute. The copper ore reserves at the Chuquicamata mine were re-estimated during March to June 1994, as part of a comprehensive audit of the mine's overall short- and long-term planning. The basic principles essential to all ore reserve estimates were implemented viz: 1. A detailed study of the geology, in this case particularly of the orientations of structural features of copper mineralisation and the subdivision of the orebody into geologically homogeneous sections, 2. the use of both drillhole and blasthole data sets, 3. statistical and geostatistical analyses of both data sets to model anisotropic spatial structures for all the geologically homogeneous sections, 4. block kriging using both data sets individually; and 5. a comprehensive validation of the block valuations to confirm the absence of global and conditional biases and to quantify the actual improvement achieved in the overall quality of the estimates compared to those executed on earlier techniques.

Privately-owned companies considering investing in the resources sector can optimise their investment decisions by adopting a systematic technical assessment of acquisition assets, similar to the approach commonly adopted by public financial institutions and publicly-listed companies.Technical due diligence provides a process to identify key geological, mining, geotechnical, metallurgical, environmental and social risks and opportunities and determine the most likely business case and valuation of assets. Technical due diligence is commonly carried out in parallel with legal, commercial and financial due diligence, often involving the acquirer, to maximise the understanding of the investment.There are significant advantages in investors conducting a comprehensive technical due diligence, which typically involves site visits and project assessment to international standards by an independent, multidisciplinary team of experts. The outcomes provide the opportunity for the investor to make early, informed decisions and to understand and manage risks.Technical due diligence may be carried out at several stages: when considering and weighing up a number of investment options, prior to and during a transaction or immediately post-transaction. In the first stage, the outcomes will inform the choice of investment and, more particularly, whether there are any fundamental flaws in the projects being considered. In the second stage, due diligence outcomes can inform the level of investment and approach to risk management and planning. Digger Rocks is one of several nickel-bearing sulphide deposits localised within komaLiitic volcanics of the Forrestania Greenstone Bell within the Archaean YiIgam Block of Western Australia. Exploration and evaluation to April 1990 have delineated a resource, at a nominal cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent Ni, of 1.9 Mt at 1.1 per cent Ni within a lensoid sulphide body which strikes NW, dips 50°SW, and occurs at a depth of 30 - 110 m below surface. There has been no production from any of the Forrestania nickel deposits to-date. The deposit, comprising both disseminated and massive sulphides, has maximum dimensions of 400 m strike, 115 m vertically and 90 m true width. Generally the massive sulphides occur at the base of the disseminated sulphides, on or close to the base of the Digger Rocks dunite. The two main massive sulphide lenses have maximum dimensions of 120 m strike, 75 m vertically and 16 m true width (northern lens) and 60 m strike, 25 m vertically and 4 m true width (southern lens). The average grades of the massive and disseminated sulphides are 5.9 per cent i and 1.2 per cent i respectively. The massive sulphides generally have sharp hangingwall and fOOlwall contacts and display strong internal grade anisolropy.The massive sulphides are mainly within the supergene zone and consist of violarite, pyrite and marcasite. The disseminated sulphides are mainly within the primary zone and consist of pentlandite, pyrrholite, pyrite and minor chalcopyrite. Alteration zones, up to six in number, are complex in detail. The sulphides are capped by an average of 30 m of sub-economic, leached, siliceous, oxidised material.A genetic model for the deposit is described which places Digger Rocks in Category 2 (sulphides in large layered dunite bodies) of the latest classification of komatiitic nickel sulphide deposits in the Yilgam Block of Western Australia by Hill and Gole (1990).

Comparatively recent Tasmanian legisla tion established a series of rigid control standards for environmental protection just as ma spectacular expansion of the mining industry was nearing completion. Upgrading existing protection to obtain the necessary licence to operate under these new regulations required further major works and involved a considerable outlay of non- productive capital at a time when escalating costs and falling metal prices were straining economic efficiencies to the limit. Late in 1974 a major environmental protection scheme was commissioned by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited at Rosebery on the West Coast of Tasmania. This 4 million dollar project was specifically developed by the Company ahead of and to meet the new standards for control of total effluents discharged from its zinc-lead -copper-pyrites mine and concentrator.

Linear kriging methods fail to estimate local grades and local reserves for highly skewed variables due to three reasons: it uses only part of the available data information, it has no physical principles associated with the mathematical proceedings to minimise the problems, and it works with continuous variables while data are discrete because of the limited precision of any equipment. The techniques commonly used up to now to solve the highly skewed variables estimation problems were unsuccessful, unless mathematical rigor is abandoned. Even the method of multiple indicator kriging is not satisfactory. This paper presents a new framework, the field parametric geostatistics (FPG) that transforms noisy variograms into well-behaved variograms and justifies mathematically empirical procedures commonly used, as trimming or capping arbitrarily very high values. The method, when applied to non-skewed variables, yields similar results to classic kriging. The methodology is illustrated in a case study at a gold deposit in Brazil, and compared to results obtained by usual techniques.

The United States has more than 45 billion tons of economic coal reserves in seams above 10 feet thick and current underground production from thick seams represent less than three per cent of the total production. A tripling of underground production from thick seams is necessary within the next 10 years to meet U.S. coal production demands. An analysis of underground accident and production data is presented in the paper. A study of accident and injury distribution in different coal seam heights in the eastern and western part of the United States in seams ranging in thicknesses from 5 to 15 feet indicates that the seam thicknesses do not produce adverse impact on underground injury incidence. Accidents associated with roof falls and haulage account for about 70 per cent of underground mining injuries.

Hydrothermal mineral deposits are the dominant mineral deposit type in the Cullen Mineral Field, and have been important sources of tin, tungsten gold, silver-lead, zinc and copper. The deposits are mostly in north to northwest-trend- ing shear zones, and are confined to Early Proterozoic contact metamorphosed metasediments or synorogenic to postorogenic granitoids. The distribution of the vein-type deposits with- in the contact aureole defines a district-scale metal zonation of uranium closest to granitoid, through tungsten, copper, tin, silver-lead to gold with increasing distance from granitoid contacts. This zonation probably reflects de- creasing temperatures within the contact aureole during granitoid emplacement, and at the time of generation of a variety of metal-bearing fluids. A magmatic source for some of the metals is indicated by the positive spatial relationship between uranium, tungsten, copper and silver-lead deposits and granitoids abundant in those metals. There is little evidence for any such relation- ship for tin and gold deposits, except for an association of some tin deposits with tin-enriched mafic rocks. Most of the granitoids with anomalous metal values are late stage highly fractionated leuco- granitic phases forming younger plutons peripheral to the main body of the Cullen Batholith, They probably form cusps connected to the main body at shallow depths.

The population and the per capila consumption of mineral resources have both grown dramatically during the century past. It is argued that growth will continue through the century ahead but that the magnitudes of undiscovered resources are probably adequate to meet demands. The challenge that the mineral explorer of the future will face is finding deposits beneath several kilometres of barren rock.It is further argued that the principal challenge that society will face in the century ahead is the amelioration of environmental stress.

The Commission called tenders for a four boom hydraulic jumbo, plus basket, on an art- iculated carrier in Sept. 1977. Atlas Copco submitted the successful tender in Jan. 1978 for the supply of a three boom jumbo, plus basket. The Promec TH470 jumbo was commiss- ioned in the 2000 m long Sophia tunnel in Nov. 1978. Adequate spare parts were not available during the first three months of operation and the hammers could not be overhauled at the recommended interval. One hammer was removed after drilling 13 600 m due to a crack in the intermediate housing. Tests were conducted with different types of drilling consumables. Both rope and Hi-teed threads were tested and found compar- able. The average penetration rate in the granite was 1.1 m/min. Initially the drillers were not experienced enough to operate the BUT 15ERH booms without causing damage to the booms and hoses. Drilling deviation espec- ially of the perimeter holes was greater than expected. It is now obvious that greater attention must be given to attracting, train- ing and retaining the right type of operator and maintenance fitter.

Discontinuities often have a very detrimental effect on the stability of mine highwall faces. The west wall of the Muja open cut is remarkable for the number and variety of discontinuity sets which occur over a relatively small area. To-date 14 separate structural domains have been identified over an area measuring approximately 560 m by 120 m.The structural domains have been grouped into four structural assemblages on the basis of their angular relationships to each other and to regional folding and faulting. The distribution of these structural assemblages appears to be erratic and no controlling factors have been identified to explain or predict them other than in the most generalised terms.

Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited have recently commissioned a 14 Megawatt power station adjacent to its underground coal mining operation at Appin NSW. The power station is fuelled by methane gas extracted from the coal seams 500 metres below the surface. The methane is compressed and cooled prior to its injection into the combustor of a single shaft gas turbine. The turbine is coupled through a reduction gearbox to an alternator. There is sufficient power generated to cover colliery load, with any excess being exported to Prospect County Council, which is the supply authority for the south western region of Sydney.

Flotation science and technology are related to three major sub- processes which are organized in a hierarchical structure as shown in Fig. 1. The basic sub-process is the chemical process which affects the attachment of air bubbles to mineral particles. In particular, the chem- ical process is related with the adsorption of surface active sub- stances at the gas-liquid, liquid- solid, and gas-liquid-solid inter- faces. This field has been most intensively explored in flotation research. The second domain in flotation research is concerned with the mineral particle to air bubble attachment sub- process in the system. This sub- process represents the dynamics of particle and bubble encounter where the contact angle and the induction time, determined by the surface chem- istry of the system, are among the most significant parameters. This sub-process can be referred to as the micro-process as against the third sub-process, or the macro-process, which corresponds to the integral behaviour of the system. Two other sub-processes are integrated into the macro-process in which they may not reveal themselves explicitly in the details. The third sub-process does not entail surface-chemical or physi- cal events any more, but it represents them all inclusively. To represent this sub-process we use mathematical equations, called models. Only in some simple or simplified cases can the models be solved exactly to find out the behaviour of the flotation system in which we are interested. Digital

A study of high pressure rolls grinding of a number of Australian ores and minerals has been carried out using a pilot-scale machine with rolls 300 mm diameter and 70 mm wide. The results from this study have been used in conjunction with plant survey data to construct computer simulation models of various comminution circuits and these have been used to investigate options for incorporating high pressure grinding rolls into these comminution circuits. Possible rolls options for three of these circuits are presented, and likely energy savings over the existing circuits are discussed together with potential improvements in plant throughput and/or product sizing. A scale-up procedure for predicting full-scale machine performance from small-scale testing is described, and the effects of rolls operating conditions are also discussed.

Ion flotation involves the adsorption of ionic species, in association with surfactant molecules, at the surface of rising gas bubbles, for the purpose of recovering and concentrating those ions. The objective of this study was to optimise the ion flotation process using a heap-leach liquor, containing gold cyanide, and the surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The aim was to minimise the surfactant reagent dose, maximise the throughput of feed liquor in the process, and satisfy the dual constraints of a high gold recovery and a high volume reduction factor. Development of a first order model of the ion flotation process formed the theoretical basis for the test program procedure and the interpretation of the results. Batch tests were used in order to determine the ultimate recovery curve for the heap leach liquor-CTAB surfactant system. The results indicated that a surfactant dose of about 0.083 g/l would be necessary in order to achieve a satisfactory gold recovery. Continuous tests were then performed on a small-scale pilot plant at the Newcastle Laboratories. The optimum result achieved was a gold recovery of 85 per cent, a volume reduction factor of ten, and a feed throughput of 2.3 m3/m2-h. Recent work also indicates that very much higher volume reductions can be achieved using a larger diameter vessel. The improvement may be a consequence of a reduction in wall effects and hence an improvement in foam drainage.

Experimental work is described in which extremely dilute aurocyanide liquors are treated with novel surface-active complexing agents to produce a hydrophobic aurocyanide species. Subsequent aeration of these liquors causes accumulation of such species at the air-water interface and the aurocyanide complex is transferred to a froth concentrate. A detailed performance assessment of this process is made and this knowledge used in the design of a pilot plant facility. Early results indicate the feasibility of the selective recovery of aurocyanide ions from reclaimed residue dam water (approximately 0.2ppm Au) with upgrade ratios of the order 180:1. A further study was made applying ion flotation to the recovery of gold from a carbon-in-pulp (CIL) feed liquor (approximately 1.0ppm Au). The probable economics of this process compared to conventional CIL processing is also described. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The technology may also have more generalised applications to other heavy metal process- Ing.

The Boddington Gold Mine orebody is a large tonnage, low grade gold deposit located within the Archaean Saddleback greenstone belt within the south-western region of Western Australia. The orebody consists of laterite caprock (30 per cent) and clays (70 per cent) produced by lateritisation of felsic volcanics and intrusives. The caprock comprises gravel, hardcap and B-zone which have a specific gravity of 1.8, 2.4 and 1.8 respectively. The clay has a specific gravity of 1.5.
