The sulphide ores of the Kalgoorlie goldfield have long been looked upon as' refractory, involving special metallurgical treatment. For many years two kinds of treatment have been practised-(l) wet treatment, including fine grinding, amalgamation or concentration of the free gold, concentration of the sulphide minerals with subsequent roasting and cyanidation, and cyanidation or bromo-cyanidation of the residue from the concentrating operation; (2) dry-crushing of the ore and roasting the whole of thecrushed ore, amalgamation of the gold in the calcine during fine grading, followed by cyanidation. The wet treatment was advanced a stage further when, in 1929, the Lake View and Star Ltd. adopted large scale flotation. As a consequence, however, further metallurgical problems were introduced. This paper covers the investigation, ,of one of the most prominent of these problems.Flotation preceded by strakes was satisfactory to a point.The flotation concentrate consisted largely of auriferous pyrite and tellurides, and the gangue minerals in the concentrate were practically barren.Several sources of loss of gold values were, however, found to be associated with this circuit, viz.-(a) There was the loss of gold in the flotation tailing.(b) Loss by dusting during roasting of the flotation concentrate.(c) Loss of gold in the cyanided residue.

Five Hypotheses are given for factors influencing long-run metals price forecasts. 1 . Geologists succeed when given the money. 2. Better understanding of a metals market depresses its price. 3 . Statistical techniques get forecasts wrong. 4. Long-run metals prices are related to crustal abundance. 5 . Economic cycles affect metals prices more than is realised. These are then framed within the transition between eras as influenced by apparent long waves in economic activity. Innovation surges during the transition between eras. The transition to the 5th Wave since the Indus- trial Revolution 200 years ago is now underway. Finally, price projec- tions are given both for the 5th Wave and 200 years from now on the assumption that a similar monetary measure to today will be then extant.

The treatment of the Broken Hill ores has,undergone many changes during the last ten years, and it may be of interest to some of the members to know what are the main lines on which the Proprietary Mine works at present. It must be understood that the want of absolute uniformity in the treatment amongst the various mines at the Barrier does not prove that some of the mines are working on wrong lines, for the ore is not exactly the same along the whole line of lode; this necessitates a variation in treatment, although generally only in detail.At the Proprietary Mine the ore is all mined by contract the miners are paid so much per ton for clean ore. The ore in the mine in most stopes is mixed with gangue, and the inclination of the uliners is, of course, to mix gangue with the ore, so as to be paid for as large 3 tonnage as possible. This is quite natural clean ore is easily distinguishable from clean gangue, but most lumps are a mixture of clean ore and gangue in varying proportions. The miner will naturally throw into his heap pieces which he considers still good enough, whilst the management may consider these pieces just a trifle too poor; consequently a check must be kept on this.This necessitates the first operation to which the ore is submitted. A statistically-designed experimental program has been used to study compositional and processing variables which influence the development of strength and reducibility of iron ore pellets. The effects of chemical composition and processing variables were investigated by indurating laboratory-made green pellets, of known composition, under approximately isothermal conditions in a pot- grate simulator. Some findings from a six- variable study are summarized in the form of contour diagrams and emphasize the importance of interactions between the variables. Production of strong, highly reducible pellets is possible over a considerable range of combinations of temperature and firing time. Abrasion index (AI) and cold compression strength (CCS) improve as both these variables increase, but reducibility (R) declines, so a compromise is required. When the lime level is too low to form enough slag for bonding, the AI and CCS may be inadequate. Larger additions of lime tend to improve AI and CCS, with only slight effects on R. Gold mineralisation at the Hamata prospect is related to a series of stacked pyrite and quartz-pyrite veins associated with a number of shears which strike N to NE and dip E. Mineralisation is contained entirely within the Morobe Granodiorite close to the intersection of the Upper Watut Fault and some younger NE to SW striking faults. The prospect was originally detected in 1987 by a regional stream sediment sampling programme. Subsequent mapping and sampling outlined an anomalous zone approximately 900m long by 300m wide. Drill testing has indicated a resource of 46Mt at 0.9 g/t Au.

In the narrow stopes of South African gold mines, rockbreaking is carried out by drilling and blasting with safety fuse and igniter cord being used as the initiation system. The fuse/gniter cord system is used primarily because of its low cost, however several limitations of this method include: inaccurate delay time, unreliable firing, inflexible application to varied configurations, and the absence of dynamic interaction between holes. Alternative initiation systems that incorporate millisecond timing are being developed to overcome the limitations of fuse(tgniter cord systems. Current investigations by the Stoping Technology Division of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) into the effects of millisecond initiation are being conducted at a deep test site. Experimental blasts using various millisecond delays and the independent firing of holes with fuse/igniter cord are being studied in order to quantify the influence of delay time on the blasting process and to identify the best methods of applying millisecond initiation systems. The effect of design variables such as delay time, hole firing pattern, stemming, and panel layout are discussed. Blast results including throw distance and direction, muckpile profile and rock cleaning times are used in the discussion of different combinations of blasting variables.

The orientation and location of the hydraulic legs are two very important parameters for the design of shield supports in longwall mining. Studies have shown that leg orientations and locations of a support determine the magnitude, orientation and location of the resultant support resistance which in turn affects the efficiency of the support and the ability to prevent premature roof falls in the face area. Therefore, there is a need to determine the best combination of orientation and location of the hydraulic legs for each type of shield support under various geological conditions. This paper attempts to evaluate, first, the individual role of each parameter (orientation or location) and then to determine their integrating functions in terms of ground control employing finite element analysis. Three types of shield support (2-leg and 4-leg shields and 4-leg chock shield) with various combination of the parameters are simulated and their effects are discussed. The optimum design for each parameter for each support type under various geological conditions is also discussed and recommended.

This paper reviews the development and operation of a small underground tin mine in NE Tasmania. Tin mineralisation was discovered in the Lottah area in the 1880's with early alluvial and eluvial workings leading to the development of large low grade open pit operations. Apart from short lived activities operations ceased in 1915. Intensive exploration in 1978-81 outlined substantial tonnages of low grade tin mineralisation (0.2% Sn) of open pit material. An underground ore body was also located (800 000 tonnes 0.6% Sn). Spectrum Resources Australia Pty Limited acquired a 98 percent interest in the property in 1988. Mine and mill development began in early 1989 based on an underground mine utilising trackless mining using room and pillar with fill stoping. The milling circuit involves primary jaw crushing, Barmac secondary crushing to lmm, Mogensen and DSM screens with jigs and tables to make a wet concentrate. Final tin concentrates are produced by high tension and magnetic separation. Planned production rates are 500 t/day with a mine life of 6-7 years.

Polycrystalline diamond compacts (PDC) have been widely used as cutting elements in the drilling tools for the oil, gas, civil and mining industries because of their faster penetration rates and longer bit life. US Department of Energy reports that PDC bits account for more than one-third of the total footage drilled worldwide (US Department of Energy, 2004). However, non-thermally-stable diamond composites (NTSDC) have seldom been applied to geothermal drilling, since premature failures of such PDC cutters have been observed in hard rock formations. Several factors need to be considered to prevent premature failure of cutters and improve cutting performance when using PDC-based bits and other rock cutting tools. The first set of factors consists of the strength, density, stiffness, toughness and thermal resistance of the PDC and the rock. A second set relates to the complex behaviour of the bonding between the PDC cutter and the bit matrix, or the pick and the pick holder, which is vital in maintaining stable, reliable and durable adhesion of the cutters to their hubs. Finally, based on a better understanding of the cutting processes, the formulation of a predictive model would assist in further development of cutter design.

Soil gases were collected on activated charcoal, analyzed by computerized mass spectrometry and treated with multivariate statistical pattern recognition to determine the diagnostic geochemical signature associated with the Okuaizu Geothermal Field in Japan. From this a geothermal model was developed and compare to 175 "unknown" samples in a 250 m spaced grid over 30 1Qn2 mapping the areas with a matching geochemical character. Faults and fractures were generally located by the presence of high molecular weight components. Following the initial survey, the faults in two specific areas were precisely located by a second survey with samples at 10-30m spacing. Where earlier geochemical surveys had placed anomalies 1-2 Km northeast of the geothermal center, the fingerprint survey accurately mapped the system and detected several faulted zones. It was not misled by hot springs located away from the geothermal System.

LITHOPROBE is a national, collaborative research grogram with the general objective of understanding the teotectonic evolution of the North American continent through multidisciplinary lithospheric studies in carefully selected areas of Canada. Six transect areas are investigating Precambrian evolution, although only in two of these is the research well evolved. The Archean Kapuskasing Structural Zone in Ontario is confirmed as an upthrust slice of upper to mid crust exposed at the surface. The Late Proterozoic Keweenawan mid-continent rift is shown to be the deepest known rift on Earth and the Grenville collisional zone of Ontario and Quebec involves crustal scale imbrication and ramping of deeply buried rocks to the surface. Two transect areas are investigating Phanerozoic evolution. In the Newfoundland Appalachians the geologically defined tectonostratigraphic domains do not coincide with lower crustal blocks defined by seismic reflection data. The Southern Cordillera Transect in western Canada is examining the nature, timing and dynamics of the assembly of the Cordillera, and particularly the role of accreted terranes. Work in the eastern and central segments has extended the known western limit of the North American craton at least IOO km westward and crustal-scale ramps associated with metamorphic core complexes have been identified.

A review is given of progress made to- wards the development of personal gravimetric dust sampling for risk assessment on South African gold mines. The present strategy is critically examined on the basis of principles for assessing health hazard from dust exposure. Reasons are advanced for replacing the konimeter with a gravimetric system based on full shift personal sampling. Constraints imposed by local characteristics of gold mines are used to illustrate the difficulty in finding suitable instrumentation for measuring personal exposure to respirable silica.

Dense medium cyclone theory, supported by extensive experimental and plant-scale evidence, demonstrates that medium rheology (stability and viscosity) substantially affects cyclone performance in mineral applications.Two instruments have therefore been developed to allow medium stability and viscosity to be-monitored in the plant environment. Sublevel open stoping (S.L.O.S.) was introduced at Rosebery in 1972 in the wider ore blocks below 14 level, largely replacing cut and fill methods which had been in use up till that time. During 1973/74 the method produced 10% of primary stoping tonnes, and by 1981/82 it increased to 65%. Because of the increasing reliance placed on sublevel open stoping for primary stoping production, every effort was made in both planning and operating to: - maximise ore recovery and reduce dilution - increase productivity - reduce costs.

Didipio gold-copper mine operation is situated in the island of Luzon, approximately 270 km north of Manila in the Philippines, in an area of high seasonal rainfall. The hydrogeological water flow model implied that there would be high connectivity between regional structures and underground operations. This model predicted that underground mine groundwater inflows were expected to quickly rise as the decline progressed to a peak of 510 L/s. Designing a capital pump station to deal with 510 L/s has its own challenges, however developing the decline down to the required level, always dealing with 300 L/s of water and constructing the pump station is extremely challenging and required a robust water management plan and mine design. When dealing with expected high volumes of water, underground mine design and scheduling plays a key role in protecting electrical infrastructure, equipment, secondary pumps, and the decline from flooding. A good drainage system and controlled dewatering plan is essential for safety and progress. This paper details the dewatering techniques and mine designs required to accomplish decline development with high water inflows as used in the Didipio project. It will describe the learnings and outcomes that are achievable with a flexible design, as new structures are mapped, and water intersections are increased. It also highlights the potential for adaptability in mine planning to provide evolving improvements or to evade problems that are expected from the constant reconciliation of data recorded during development.

Coal slurry pumping was introduced into the U.K. in 1973. Gateside packs were prepared in areas of containment using R.O.M. coal and a special fast setting cement. The packs restricted roadway convergence and moderated spontaneous combustion risks, but costs were high and alternptives were sought. A similar system using OPC and an accelerator had limited success. Much more successful was the Aquapack process which used dilute slurries of a special OPC based cement and an accelerator based on sodium carbonate and bentonite pumped simultaneously into la fabric packbag. The Tekpak system using HAC and a much modified calcium sulphate mixture superceded Aquapack on the grounds of improved cement pumping life lower alkalinity and lower costs. A further modification of this system gave a cement with a 24 hour pumping life thus obviating flushing out pipe ranges except at the week-ends, improved packbags also increased the efficiency of the process. The hazard of spontaneous combustion can be inhibited if air supply channels across the waste can be located and plugged. Using gas samples from pack pipes to locate the heating and injecting a special grout, formulated from bentonite, sodium silicate and thixotroping agents. into the waste on the intake road has proved a successful method of controlling heatings. Mine' roadway and face cavities are being safely and successfully filled with cementitious foams produced in a novel placer machine. The foams are based on fast setting cements with specialised foaming agents. Up to 13 cu. metres per hour of fast setting thixotropic foams can be produced and their use is now widespread throughout U.K. coal mines.

In recent years the column flotation process has gained worldwide acceptance for processing various types of minerals under different circuit configurations. In an age when real prices of many mineral commodities are in decline and mining and labour costs are rising in real terms, it is more important than ever that concentration processes be not only efficient but also cost-effective. The column flotation process can give better metallurgical performance as well as involve lower capital and operating costs compared to conventional mechanical cells.This paper reviews the literature on columns and the effects of various column parameters on performance of the column flotation process. The history and principles of operation of the column flotation process are briefly discussed by way of introduction.

A new algorithm has been investigated for three-dimensional open pit designs to improve the dynamic cone approach which utilises the dynamic programming technique. The conventional dynamic cone method was improved by introducing examination processes: 1. whether any negative blocks are included in a unit cone or not; and 2. whether it is possible or not to leave the negative blocks unmined in the unit cone without disturbing the geometric condition imposed on the slope angle of the cone. The newly developed algorithm was applied to a large-scale open pit copper mine in a planning stage and the results have been compared with those obtained by the conventional methods.
