Underground operations commenced at Tower Colliery in late 1978 and the early prevailing mining conditions in the worked seam were considered poor as a result of high stress and geological disturbances. This suggested that outbursting activity may be a possibility. The colliery has since recorded a total of 13 individual outburst incidents, all of which have been associated with the same dyke and strike-slip fault zone. This paper depicts the geological conditions and presents the results of investigations undertaken at the time of these outbursts.

In this paper we present a case study of the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of cultural heritage management strategies at the Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea. We discuss the contextual drivers and constraints, and outline the ways in which Lihir Gold Limited is aiming to set new industry bench marks for the region through the development of values-based best practice cultural heritage management programs. This approach is largely based upon a compliance partnership with a local stakeholder group. We argue that such partnerships are a prudent means of mitigating company risk, while constituting a far more necessary tool for local people in the reconceptualisation and negotiation of the experiences of significant social change and modernisation experienced in the context of recent resource development.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) schedule model is used for short- to medium-term planning and scheduling at the Fimiston Open Pit Mine (the Superpit). The model bridges the gap between grade control models, which are generated one to seven days prior to mining, and the annual Resource and Reserve model update that is used for budget and life-of-mine plans. The schedule model uses close-spaced grade control data (up to 20 000 m drilled each month) as well as resource definition drilling to estimate production volumes three to six months ahead of current mining. From this, a rolling 12 week mining and processing schedule is generated on a monthly basis. As the KCGM operation is mill and sulfur constrained, the schedule model needs to be an accurate predictor of ounces as well as tonnes, gold and sulfur grades. The process must also be time efficient in order to meet monthly planning and reporting deadlines. Due to the large amount of new data generated each month, model updates using conventional interpretation and estimation techniques have proven to be impractical and too time consuming. Sizing is fundamental technology for each step of ironmaking process. The progress of sizing technology has greatly contributed to the development of ironmaking technology. As the purposes of ironmaking operations diversified particularly since the oil crisis of 1973, the sizing technology made new advance- ment, as represented by pulverization of ser- pentine, dezincification and classification of secondary blast furnace dust, pulverized coal injection, size-segregated sinter charging and a coal preparation control process. These techniques are mostly characterized by the fine grinding of a given type of mineral or coal to heighten the degree of reaction con- trol. This trend is expected to continue Further.

The countercurrent gas-solid-heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temp-erature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assump-tions, to be corrected as the experimental work develops, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating con-ditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which-controls the 2 strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char-strength in the pilot plant in 1961 and a prediction is made of ' a way ' in ' which the limitation could be overcome.

In 1980 Pancontinental Mining Limited decided that while the Jabiluka uranium project was still a major focus of the company's efforts some diversification was necessary. At this time it was decided to include precious metals in Pancon's exploration and acquisition objectives. As a result the now Paddington Gold tenements were acquired, explored and developed. Today, it rates as the 6th largest gold mine in Australia and at an expanded throughput of 1.2 million tonnes per year of ore it will produce about 110,000 ozs of gold per year. Following extensive exploration activities by Pancon's Exploration Division the Operations Division continued with development drilling finally proving up a reserve of about 8.4 million tonnes at an average grade of 3.2 g/t. An in- house preliminary feasibility study was followed by a two phase feasibility study by Davy McKee. This resulted in a recommendation to the Pancon Board of Directors to develop Paddington with an annual throughput capacity of 875,000 tonnes. Ore handling improvements at Mount Isa Mines Limited were necessary to keep abreast of technological advances in all phases of sublevel stoping practice.In the early 1930s an efficient ore handling system was in operation.However in 1936 excessive water encountered in deepening the hoisting shaft necessitated the sinking of a second hoisting shaft. Financial difficulties prevented abandoning the original shaft and surface ore handling and crushing facilities, so ore was transferred underground and underground crushing deferred. It was not until 1951 Jhat multilevel crushing permitted increased efficiency in the handling of ore from stopes. Ore was then hoisted in one shaft and transferred on the surface by conveyor belt to a new crushing plant.In 1956 a planned production increase from 5,000 to 11,000 tons per mining day made possible further improvements in ore handling. Larger equipment was installed and existing equipment modified to capacitate the handling of larger sized ore at increased daily tonnages.INTRODUCTIONThe intensive exploratory programme commenced in 1954 disclosed large reserves of both lead and copper ores and in 1956 an expansion programme was initiated to increase production from 5,000 to 11,000 tons per mining day. The increased tonnage would result in decreased costs per ton and further cost reductions would result from increased mechanisation underground. A new test coke oven of seven cubic foot capacity is described. The oven was designed to simulate conditions in a central section of a battery oven and a special feature is the achievement of unidirectional heating from the flues on either side of the charge. The method of charging permits close control of charge conditions'such as bulk density and moisture content. These conditions, as well as coking conditions (e.g. flue temper- atures., coking time) must be varied to simulate conditions in different batteries, The effects of several variables on coke quality are discussed. Using test oven conditions corresponding to those of Newcastle steelworks batteries, good agreement was obtained between strength indices of test oven and battery cokes; for 17 tests, the average A.S.T.M. stability and hardness indices for the test oven coke were 38,5% and 69.7%, while those for the battery coke were 37.1.% and 67.6%.

JUST prior to the war the Broken Hill South Ltd: raised, on the average, 6628 tons of ore per week, all of which was crushed and treated in the 4-section gravity mill and the slime flotation plant, for the recovery of lead concentrate carrying silver. The sandy residues from that treatment were railed to the treatment plant of the Amalgamated Zinc (De Bavay's) Ltd. for the recovery of zinc concentrate by flotation, on the joint account of both companies. Subsequent to that-since 1916-approximately 1000 tons of old dump slime were also treated weekly for the recovery of lead and silver as slime-lead concentrate.PLANT CAPACITYUnder this programme the Babcock and Wilcox boiler plant of 8 boilers was taxed to such an extent as to call for the installation of two additional boilers, each of 2690 sq. ft. of heating surface and 55 sq. ft. chain-grade area.The electric generators and the air compressors of the old powerplant were also loaded to their maximum capacity. In view of the fact that the old power-plant had been added to from time to time since 1901, and that further extension was notpossible, and as it was not, moreover, an economical arrangement, the whole question of power generation was reconsidered. The Kennedy Siltstone Open Cut provides graded rock for stope filling. Rotary drilling of 310 mm blastholes with a Gardner Denver GD120 is used, and the successful application of an equilateral triangular drilling pattern is described. Charging practices and the development of bulk slurry handling are outlined. Blast monitoring plays an important role in K.S.O.C. drilling and blasting operations. The proximity of nearby residential areas (1300 m) and the Mount Isa Airport (4500 m) necessitates special attention with regard to the minimisation of both air blast and ground vibration levels. The application and control of drilling and blasting parameters has had a direct bear- ing on success of the mining operations and also played an important role in reducing the disturbance to the community.

Oakbridge, in combination with its joint venture partner, Nippon Steel of Japan, is expanding its Bulga underground and open cut mines to meet the growing demand for coal in the Asian market. Expansion works underway will see the Bulga underground mine become a world leader in underground productivity, the introduction of a high capacity dragline into the open cut mine (largest capacity dragline in NSW) as well as a major upgrade of the coal preparation plant (CPP) and coal handling facilities (CHF) to process the increased production. This paper describes the planning and implementation of this major expansion program and highlights the rationale behind some key aspects of the program.

Central Colliery was developed to exploit large underground reserves in the German Creek lease. It was planned from the outset as a retreating longwall operation and is the first longwall mine in Queensland. Longwall mining is not new to Australia but all previous experience has been confined to the coalfields of New South Wales. There was no precedent for longwall extraction in the markedly different geological setting of the Bowen Basin in Central Queensland. Various investigations were thus carried out during the initial development of Central Colliery, prior to the installation of the longwall, to ascertain the geotechnical characteristics of the coal seam and the adjacent strata and to predict the performance of the heading and pillar design as mining proceeds to depth. Laboratory tests showed the coal to be weak with an unconfined compressive strength of 9.6 MN/m2. Site inspection and geophysical correlation revealed a shear zone and extensive intraformational shear planes in the seam. The latter were found to exert a controlling influence on rib reaction in the headings. This behaviour was predicted by finite element modelling of the development headings which indicated that mining induced stresses in the coal would be relieved by block movement of the ribs. A chain pillar width versus depth curve was established for yielding pillar design based on empirical and computational methods. This gave pillar widths from 25m to 48m over the proposed depth range of 150m to 300m. Finite element modelling of the 25m pillars chosen for the first gateroads confirmed the overall stability of the design but suggested that rib spall could be significant in the adjacent tailgate. This paper discusses the dewatering strategy adopted and the considerations and procedures required to incorporate a dewaterinq scheme into the Mt Whaleback mining operation. It concludes that in pit pre-dewaterinq has successfully allowed mining to progress below the standing water level with the minimum of disruption or radical change to the mining method. It is recognised however, that dewatering is not a static activity and there is a requirement for ongoing investigations and development. Pre-dewatering commenced in October, 1984. Purpose designed pumping trailers have been employed to minimise the loss of pump availability resulting from the frequent. need to remove and reinstall pumps when close vicinity blasts occur. To July, 1986, some 0.5 Mm' of groundwater had been pumped from the unconfined orebody aquifer. Mining has progressed to some 20 m below the standing water level without. any undue water associated problems. Ultimately, it is ,cheduled to extend some 300 in below the original water level in the West Pit. With the development of an increasing area of the mine below the standing water level, the influence of seasonal high intensity rainfall events, which had previously caused little concern, now need to be addressed. The Hall-Hoult process is likely to be the dominant method of aluminium production for the remainder of the century. The characteristics of the operation of a modern smelter are described and attention drawn to their disabilities which are due chiefly to the small production capacity of individual cells.The principal components of the Hall-H6roult cell - the electrolyte, the anode and the cathode - are discussed in order to identify the problems of scale-up. The factors influencing current efficiency and energy consumption are analysed and lead to the conclusion that the greatest potential for energy saving lies in reducing the anode to cathode distance (ACD).The most promising direction for major change is in the application of a new titanium diboride - carbon composite for coating of the surface of the cathode carbon. It improves the wetting of the carbon by aluminium and should permit the use of sloping cathodes and anodes. The deep metal pad would thereby be eliminated and, in the absence of magnetic perturbations, the ACD could be substantially decreased.The construction and testing of a full-size "Low Energy Cell" is scheduled for early 1986 and is expected to reduce energy consumption in aluminium production by about 15%.

To determine whether 130 felt earth tremors around Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire U.M, which also experienced severe surface fissuring, were caused by coal extraction, a surface seismometer array was established around Thoresby Colliery. Over the next year, 785 microseismic events were detected. The spatio- temporal seismicity patterns are clearly associated with the commencement, continuing extraction and closure of faces. Of particular note are events which locate at the surface and appear to be related to the active fissuring. Events occur within days of commencement of production and cease when production finishes, with good correlation between face advance and hypocentral position. Naturally occurring microseismic events have also been detected up to 1 km ahead of active longwall faces in the Midlands using triaxial geophone packages grouted into the seam together with a surface seismometer in the top of the borehole. The quality of these data were very high and guided waves can clearly be seen with the dispersive characteristics associated with seam waves. In one experiment more than 2000 events were detected in only two days of monitoring even in a relatively noisy surface environment. This paper demonstrates how very accurate locations (5 10 metres) can be generated using three-component digital data from only one borehole. The surface seismometer and the borehole P-wave onset can give extra precision for the height of the event relative to the seam. The event distributions give a dynamic, three-dimensional image of the developing patterns of fracturing above, below and ahead of the longwall face with important implications for roof control, subsidence prediction and gas Migration.

The Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper and is located in North-West Queensland, Australia. The mine is currently undergoing a transition from an 11 Mtpa open pit mine to a large sublevel cave underground mine producing 6 Mtpa. Due to a number of factors, including geometry of the pit and crusher depth, the decision has been taken to develop a hoisting shaft rather than inclined conveyors.During the feasibility study the strip and line shaft sinking methodology was preferred over blind sinking due to scheduling opportunities and interactions with level development. Other methods of sinking considered included large-diameter raise boring, which was rejected due to concerns relating to centreline accuracy. The strip and line decision was reviewed during the tender process where better than anticipated blind sink advance rates and costs were presented. This in turn enabled the higher cost of the blind sinking method to be justified by a combination of reduced risks including schedule and ground water management. This paper discusses the pros and cons of both strip and line and blind sinking methodologies in the Ernest Henry context including sinking rates and total schedule impacts of the two methods, the key risks associated with each method, cost implications of blind sinking and safety implications of the work methods in general. The paper then concludes with the reasoning behind the decision to change to blind sinking for the EHM shaft.

Developments since 1959 in major excavators to meet the high outputs of overburden and coal under the changing nature of the Morwell Coal Deposits of the Latrobe Valley are described. Particular reference is made to investigations of designs of the bucket wheel head configurations for the digging of flat batters on high faces, and examples are given of the wide use ofmodelsin these studies.An explanation is given of considerations leading to selection of the Long Boom or the Compact type of bucket wheel excavator for various applications. The past decade has seen increasing manufacture in Australia of components for excavators and similar machines. The measures undertaken to integrate these components with those from overseas (Germany) are described. A section of the paper deals with advances in Electrical Engineering for large excavators in Australia and its interdependenee with mechanical design and construction. Finally, as an example of the versatility of the bucket wheel excavator a description is given of a recent application for the mining of mineral sands in Northern N.S.W.

The Chiria Iron Ore deposit falls within the well-known Horse-shoe-shaped Singhbhum-Bonai-Keonjhar belt in India, where most of the deposits supplying ore to various steel works of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) are located. With an estimated reserve of about 2000 million tonnes of ore (at 55 per cent Fe cut-off) spread over four contiguous blocks, it is the largest iron ore deposit in India and one of the largest in world. The present study is confined to only one of the four blocks of Chiria viz North Block, comprising an area of 2.11 km2. `Corporate Plan 2005' of SAIL envisages development of a large open cast mine at Chiria to meet its enhanced requirement of iron ore by 2001-02 AD.

Over the last three million years, porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Baguio Mineral District has been driven by calc-alkaline magmatism associated with the subduction of the South China Sea plate and the Scarborough seamounts beneath northern Luzon, Philippines. Coupled with extreme uplift and exhumation rates, mineralisation in the Baguio District has been responsible for the emplacement of over 922 million grams of gold. As one of the oldest intrusive bodies associated with the Baguio District, the Black Mountain Cu-Au deposit consists of at least five intrusive phases overprinted by potassic and propylitic alteration and sulfide mineralisation. Gold ore grades are low and molybdenum grades high with respect to other porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Baguio Mineral District. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download.
