Petroleum exploration in onshore Gippsland was directed in the 1950s and 1960s towards plays in the basal Latrobe and Strzelecki Groups, but these became forgotten in the 1970s with the Latrobe play discoveries offshore. The principal explorationists of the time were Woodside Oil and Arco Ltd, who then departed the scene after drilling some 18 wells without major success. In the late-1980s successful hydrocarbon finds in equivalent age Otway Group sediments in the Otway Basin were made and in early 1990 Tyers Petroleum began investigations into Strzelecki Group prospects as applied to the onshore Gippsland Basin. Some 18 anticlines have been mapped, based on shallower coal exploration drilling in the Latrobe Group, which from seismic and gravity evidence are believed to unconformably overlie similar anticlinal structures in the underlying Strzelecki Group. Strzelecki targets of interest within drilling depth are the basal Tyers Conglomerate/Rintouls Creek Sandstone Formations which outcrop in the north of the Latrobe Valley and are analogous to the Pretty Hill Sandstone in the Otway Basin. In addition, intra-Strzelecki Group targets similar to Heathfield and Windermere Sandstone Members are also considered to be present. Good source rocks are abundant including coal seams and carbonaceous sediments of Neocomian and Jurassic age, which lie within the oil window. Seal is provided by the overlying Aptian-Albian aged volcanogenic sediments. The Tyers/Rintouls sandstones - a target in the Woodside/Arco wells, with two exceptions, were not reached. Encouraging intra-Strzelecki shows were reported in many of the wells. Basal and intra-Strzelecki porous quartzose sandstones remain one of the few untested plays left in the Gippsland Basin and, in the onshore, merit extra attention as they he within the oil window at economically drillable depths.

Refractory gold ores have been the subject of intensive metallurgical study in order to achieve more efficient recovery of contained values and at the same time to minimise environmental impact. Considerable innovative gold processing technology was introduced in New Zealand last century, the most notable being the first successful commercialisation of the cyanidation process by the Crown Mines Company at Karangahake in 1889. The Karangahake gold-silver deposit was second only +to the Waihi Martha mine in total bullion production from the region with active mining from 1882 until about 1920 and sporadic production between 1930 and 1944. Reevaluation at Karangahake with associated metallurgical testing has continued since that time becoming particularly active in the last decade as a result of increasing gold prices. Gold processing technology is reviewed and results of some recent test work are presented and discussed in the context of Karangahake history and future development possibilities. This work confirms the variability and complexity of the Karangahake deposit both mineralogically and metallurgically and suggests flotation followed by new and innovative smelting is the most appropriate processing route for the recovery of gold from the high grade ore which could be produced from the Karangahake workings in moderate tonnages.

Sinter has been used as part of the metallic charge in large-scale blast furnaces for many years with the well-known benefits in terms of productivity and fuel consumption. However, because of the high investment in a conventional sinter plant, small blast furnaces and the associated integrated mini steel plants have not taken the advantages of using sinter. Recently KTS Korf Tecnologia Siderurgica, a division of Mannesmann Demag Ltda in Brazil, has developed a mini sinter plant for which the investment is compatible with small blast furnaces. Consequently, it is of great interest to evaluate the economical impact of using sinter in such small-scale integrated steel plants. In order to compare two alternatives, ie 100 per cent ore and 70 per cent sinter in the blast furnace burden, mass and heat balances for the entire operation from sinter plant through the blast furnace and EOF-based melting shop, were performed to evaluate the final production cost of the liquid steel. It was found that, depending on the sinter feed price, substantial savings can be obtained with the use of sinter.

Disequilibrium ratios (U3O8/eU3O8), which assess the degree to which gamma activity represents the uranium content of a sample, have been measured on a representative set of samples from the ore zone of a carnotite ranium deposit located at Yeelirrie, Western Australia. A statistical analysis has been performed to investigate the dependence of the ratios on lithology and on the location of the sample in the orebody. The analysis indicates that dependence on lithology and on position across the orebody is negligible. Samples from the western end of the orebody and those from below the water table level tend to have slightly lower ratios than samples from other positions, although these trends are small compared with a large random variation in the data. The large random variation could result from some redistribution of the daughter isotopes of uranium within the orebody. On the basis of the results from all the samples, the estimated deficiency of uranium relative to radium in the ore zone of the deposit is 11 per cent.

This paper endeavours to lay as concisely as possible, before the members the salient features of local gold milling practice, and to point out in what respects this practice differs from that of other large mining camps. This is essentially a free milling ore the gangue being quartz and the gold occurring in a coarse form. At times the ore crushed contains a good deal of slate, the latter imparting to the tailings a somewhat leaden hue.Small amounts of sulphides, chiefly iron pyrites, and at times smaller quantities of arsenical pyrites, zinc blende, and galena are contained in the stone. The reduction of geological risk for planning of high production longwall faces is essential. Geological and geophysical techniques applied at Huntly West Mine before 1989 were unable to reduce the geological risk to an acceptable level. The success of a trial long-hole directional drilling programme at Huntly West Mine (Fowke et al, 1989) has encouraged the Coal Corporation of New Zealand to use the technology long-term, for seam definition. Initial drilling in 1989 completed a total of 3543 metres, with the longest borehole length being 369 metres (limited by number of rods available). A major re-interpretation of seam structure resulted from the drilling, which was able to fill in seam details between surface exploration boreholes. The undulating thick seam conditions at the mine require a refinement of drilling strategies used overseas. Long-hole directional drilling also displays potential for inseam gas drainage. Gas flows of the order of 1000 L/min were initially indicated in individual boreholes. Other gas parameters of the seam have been studied by Beamish et al (1991), and highlight the significance of the natural gas resource in the Huntly Coalfield.   The continued development of drilling technology will be of major benefit sustainable development, particularly in policy.

Initial analysis of Long Offset Time Domain Electromagnetic (LOTEM) data has traditionally been made in terms of early and late time apparent resistivities. By using more than one grounded bipole as a source, a tensor analysis technique analogous to the method used to analyse DC resistivity multiple-source bipole-dipole surveying may be formulated. We define the æinstantaneous apparent resistivity tensorÆ as the tensor that relates the total electric field vectors at each instant to the steady state (DC) uniform half space current density vectors due to each source. Instantaneous apparent resistivity tensors calculated for a 3D resistivity model suggest that profiles of LOTEM measurements across simple 3D structures can be used to create an image that reproduces the main features of the subsurface resistivity. Where measurements are distributed over an area, maps of the tensor invariants or the tensor ellipses at different times can be made into a sequence of images which provide a way of ætime slicingÆ down through the target structure.

Ok Tedi Mining Ltd has been using flotation for the production of copper/gold concentrates from a complex copper sulphide ore for several years. During this period, much effort has been devoted to metall- urgical treatment of the ore. This paper examines some of the mineralogical aspects of the sulphide minerals in the ore using the electron microprobe analyser. Results have revealed the complexity of the copper sulphide minerals and in particular, chalcocite. Analysis of both plant and laboratory flotation products has provided further insight into the effects of mineralogy on the flotation of copper and iron sulphides. A significant observation is that some of the pyrite minerals apparently exhibit natural floatability. The implications of the mineralogical characteristics of the sulphide minerals on the flotation of the ore are also discussed.

Shaft sinking through an amphibolite-granite rock mass experienced rock bursts on the shaft walls and benches. However, rock burst phenomena was exhibited only in granite, which is e1asto-brittle with ability to store strain energy caused by orogenic and man made stresses. To improve ground conditions, blasting of destressing holes at shaft corners was carried out. By this technique rock burst during shaft sinking was minimized, but not eliminated.

Roxgold was a small exploration company when it discovered the Zone 55 orebody at the Yaramoko project in Burkina Faso in 2010. Since this time, it has actively progressed the project with the completion of a preliminary economic assessment in 2013, a feasibility study in early 2014 and obtained full permitting for construction in January 2015. With no other underground gold mine in Burkina Faso, developing a modern and productive modern gold mine in West Africa was considered a significant challenge as Roxgold moved from explorer to producer.To facilitate this development, Roxgold engaged an international underground mining contractor to partner this development. This has enabled Roxgold to successfully develop the mine over a relatively short time frame with construction commencing in April 2015, first gold being poured in May 2016 and commercial production being achieved in October 2016.This paper discusses key elements of the project development and highlights some of the challenges faced with operating in a remote poorly developed area with a limited mining culture. This paper sets out to examine the possible relationships between three factors, they are, the rate of growth of world production of minerals, the growth of Australian production and the growth of scientific and engineering knowledge.The first two are quantified, in terms of tonnes and value. The third, an abstract concept "knowledge", requires to be quantified, in terms of manpower.A mathematical model, which has general application, was derived to demonstrate certain axiomatic premises and to define, more precisely, basic concepts related to the philosophy of knowledge.Finally a summary is made of education-cum-industry issues.

There is a lack of information concerning the movements of water on the continental shelf, particularly with regard to data obtained regularly over significant periods of time. The Horace Lamb Centre for Oceanographic Research has recently deployed data acquisition systems on the sea bed off the coast of South Australia to record tides, swell, and ocean temperatures. Some of these early records are described. The swell data are pertinent to future offshore operations with drilling rigs, barges, and other equipment, while the temperature variations give evidence of significant bottom currents, apart from those due to swell.

THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June) 1896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to the works, the fuewoodbeing of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides). The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by, many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall, which averages about 110 in per annum. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about42 square miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. Wattle Gully Gold Mines N.L. of Chewton, Victoria, has decided to replace its present battery plant by a new mill to treat a free milling gold ore, after fine grinding, by concentrating coarse gold in a jig concentrate for amalgamation, and fine free gold and auriferous sulphides in a flotation concentrate for cyanidation. This paper outlines the economic justification and advantages of this step. In a review of the present position at the mine, a history of the company is followed by a description of the ore and its occurrence.Present treatment practice in two separate battery plants is described. Treatment tailings assay 1 dwt/ton gold and a substantial part of this gold is finer than 200 mesh.Experimental work showing how recovery may be improved is discussed and alternative methods of concentrating coarse gold mentioned. It is decided that the most suitable method for recovering gold from the ore is by jig concentration plus flotation.The merits of various flowsheets incorporating these techniques in the existing plant and in a new plant are assessed. It is concluded that there is no advantage in extending or converting the existing two battery plants, and it would be more economical and satisfactory to build a new plant.An economic study shows that for a capital expenditure of £120,000 a new plant could be erected to treat 70,000 tons p.a., working a 5-day week, and return an additional 14.2/- per ton, or £50,000 p.a., in revenue over the existing plant. It is estimated the plant cost can therefore be recouped out of savings inside three years. Stowing has been successfully used in many countries as a means of controlling surface subsidence, minimi ing incidences of spontaneous combustion, maintaining gate road stability and maximising coal recovery.Australian experience in stowing is limited but in the future increased extraction of thicker and/or multiple seams by longwall operations and resolution of conflict of alternative land u'ses may necessitate the use of stowing in coal mining. At present there is little incentive for mining companies to introduce and operate a stowing system because costs have to be borne by the individual companies and benefits spill over to society and the State. Cost sharing by the industry and State incentives may overcome the problem of cost disincentive.

The material presented in this paper describes experimental work to determine the effect of variations in suction nozzle design upon inlet flow conditions. Four entrance profile shapes were examined under controlled conditions of slurry flow and it was found that the straight ended nozzles had consistently higher entrance losses than the straight taper or the ellipse, and that the circular arc profile nozzles were the most efficient. Subordinate considerations were the measurement of the quantities and the forces involved.As the work progressed, three distinct phases in the pattern of flow were apparent and the static pressures in each were carefully examined. An inlet zone was found to be unstable in changing boundary conditions, a transition zone was largely independent of slurry density and in a zone of stability the pressures were found to be directly related to the characteristics of the flowing pulp. In this zone pressure measurements were reproducible within ± 2 per cent regardless of changing boundary conditions.The effect of varying the "1" parameter of nozzles with a part circular entrance profile was examined and it was found that flow conditions approaching the ideal were obtained when the radius of curvature was between 0·40 and 0·550.

With the proving of a mineable orebody at Orlando in May 1961, Peko Mines N.L. was faced with the decision of whether to mill the ore on site or to haul it 25 miles to central facilities at Peko. Orlando was a relatively small orebody, so that it was decided to haul, although no reliable assessment of possible ore haulage costs was available.The necessity for a good haul road was recognised from the beginning and a 17 mile, 12 ft wide, single seal bitumen road was constructed, to link the mine to the Stuart Highway and Peko. The initial selection of 20 ton capacity diesel-powered end-tipping ore carts was made, with the best information available at the time.Since then some 130,000 tons of ore have been carted over a period of 3 years, and this paper presents the experiences of this haulage operation and the lessons learned.A second mine has just been brought into operation at Ivanhoe, 19 miles from Peko. For this haul it was decided to use an ore haulage vehicle of the side tipping road train type, which would cart some 70 tons, or more than three times the load of the vehicles initially selected.Only about 5,000 tons had been hauled at the date of this paper, but preliminary figures indicate a cost 01 1· 65d./ton-mile as against 2·47d. for the smaller vehicles.It would appear that the road haulage of ore from small outlying mines to a central plant can be highly economical, if certain basic rules concerning haul roads and vehicle selection are followed.
