In pursuance of the investigation into the influence of various elements on the properties of lead during the past year, the effect of several elements on the creep rate of commercially pure lead has been investigated; a standard initial stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. having been adopted for comparison purposes. Other work which has been carried out indicates that the relative results of creep tests may be altered by varying the applied stress, but this aspect of the problem will need to await further investigations for itscomplete elucidation. The results obtained with dilute tellurium alloys are considered sufficiently interesting, and in some respects are so extraordinary, as to warrant publicatiorr at this stage.n must be realised however that, since the results obtained appear to be at variance with those said to have been obtained in practice and those previously published, the present investigation can only be considered as a contribution to our knowledge of the general problem.Consequently it is not considered advisable or necessary to offer detailed explanation of the results given. In fact, some features of the tests about to be described will need further investigation before an adequate explanation is possible.

The Crown Minerals Act provides a new+framework for the management of Crown owned minerals and requires that regard be had for the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. The Act requires the preparation of Minerals Programmes to achieve the Act's objectives of efficient allocation of rights and the recovery of a fair financial return on its minerals. Efficient allocation requires that a permit is allocated to the party which values it most highly. A fair financial return to the Crown must be considered in the context of the economic rent available from individual mineral projects, with the proviso that a nil return to the Crown as the owner of the resource will not be considered a fair return from the community's perspective.

A clear understanding of the intensity of coal and rock burst is the basis for future research on burst mechanism and control. There has been a wide variety in the description of coal and rock burst damage at different countries using multi-methods, which makes the common understanding even more challenging. Therefore, this paper presents a broad review on the quantifications of intensity of coal and rock burst and seismic risk around the world, considering critical factors including seismic energy, magnitude, peak particle velocity and ejection velocity. It is found that the seismic energy of coal and rock burst can widely range from 0.002 MJ to 60000 MJ, with equivalent Richter magnitude from -1 to 4. The daily seismic energies can be used for seismic risk potential assessment, with energy levels from 0.1 KJ to 10 MJ, which is much lower than the burst sources. The magnitude of the seismic events can be also estimated based on the weight of damaged coal mass and human senses of vibration and sound. For the seismic intensity represented by peak particle velocity (ppv), it keeps constant within fault radius and attenuates with a speed of 1/r4 and 1/r in near and far field respectively, thus it is possible for a small seismic event to induce considerable ppv causing severe damage if the epicentral distance is small enough. There has not been a strong correlation between the ejection velocity and ppv, as seismic energy is only one of the energy sources that contribute to the kinetic energy of burst damage. Both machines have enhanced the production capabilities and quality control of the Roscommon comminuition circuit and they will provide efficient and reliable crushing well into the next century.

Effect of Anionic Surfactant on Silica Particle Attachment at the Oil-Water Interface Controlling particle attachment is crucial where powdered solids come into contact with oil and water. Particles are trapped in a deep energy well at the oil-water interface, stabilising emulsions. Here it is shown that adding anionic surfactant causes dramatic changes to the bulk and interfacial structure of silica particle-stabilised oil-in-water emulsions. Exposing particle-stabilised drops to surfactant concentrations above the critical micelle concentration enhances the rate and extent of creaming and flocculation. Mixing particle-stabilised emulsions with surfactant solutions causes drop fragmentation. As the surfactant concentration increases, the average drop size decreases and particles are displaced from the interface during the mixing process.

No one process, product or effect of the minerals sector can be viewed in isolation when addressing sustainable development. Meaningful assessments of the minerals sector require that its processes and production are drawn together in a generic framework that gives a holistic view of its performance and progress. Lifecycle Assessment is increasingly accepted as an appropriate means of constructing such a framework. It is a step beyond using the simplistic concept of the triple bottom line of social, environmental and economic performance to drive and communicate sustainable development. However, fundamental questions need to be raised about the scope and purpose of lifecycle assessment, such as what effects and performances should be assessed, for whom should they be assessed, and what performance indicators should be used and how should they be selected. The principles of eco-efficiency, industrial ecology, The Natural Step (TNS) and other pertinent philosophies and initiatives driving mineral sector sustainable development are outlined to support a lifecycle stewardship vision for the minerals sector. Articulating this vision through a holistic lifecycle indicator system showing inputs and outputs, natural partnerships, effects on community, environment and economy facilitates recognition of problems, opportunities and partnerships that can be usefully pursued.

ignitions caused by cutting tools have occurred at a rate of some 14 per year in UK coal mines since 1965, mostly on the coalface. The rate has held steady despite reducing output and number of collieries. Investigations were carried out over this period into factors affecting both the concentration of firedamp in the cutting zone and the igniting source. A study into detecting and suppressing ignitions on shearers has been undertaken and it is feasible to prevent certain ignitions from spreading outside the cutting zone. Practical measures have been adopted by British Coal to identify frictional ignition sites and to lay down working procedures to minimise risk.

An examination was made of the filtration characteristics of a haematite slurry using a range of polyacrylamide based flocculants in solutions containing up to 3 per cent sodium chloride. The polymers used were "high" and "Iow" molecular weight and had from 0 to 40 per cent charged groups.Increasing charge density tends to reduce the dose required to achieve optimum performance measured by filtration rate and by cake moisture. In general increased salt addition tends to increase the dosage required to achieve these optima. Both these observations result from the change in polymer extension and accord well with the bridging theory of flocculation.The dose required for optimal cake moisture is up to three times greater than that required for optimal filtration rate. This effect is reasonably consistent for all polymers studied and appears to be non-linearly dependent on salt concentration, with the difference being small at 0 and 3 per cent but quite significant at 1 per cent.

The outstanding environmental management initiatives undertaken by Novacoal at its Western Main Site near Lithgow in New South Wales over the past five years are detailed in this paper. These initiatives have been based on a combination of proven and innovative investigation and implementation techniques, close consultation with regulatory authorities and full support by colliery management. The results of these initiatives have enabled the colliery to exceed its pollution control obligations from a base well below industry standards. The initial poor condition of the mine was the result of over 50 years of traditional mining which paid little regard to environmental management. The transformation of the colliery within such a short period, with limited capital, is considered a model for the N.S.W. coal industry.

Knowledge of fuel qualities is of ultimate importance for the efficiency of chemical plants or power stations. Although most blending yards are equipped with automatic samplers and the derived samples are processed in the laboratory, the quality variation of the blended product may still be strong. This is caused by several reasons. First of all the process of sampling, crushing, dividing and analysis is time consuming. Results are available only with a delay of two to 24 hours. During this time blending is operated without knowledge of the main parameters. Conveyors with high throughput require expensive sampling systems capable of handling samples which are representative. The frequency of sampling needs also to be high in order to be representative. This results in high maintenance costs and also downtime of the sampling system.Online analysis of bulk materials has matured over time and today it can supplement but not replace laboratory analysis. As an example, J&C Bachmann has realised a coal quality monitoring system on the coal supply of a South African coal processing plant. The plant consumes ~42 Mt of coal per annum. The blending yard consists of two sets of three heaps where coal of six different mines is blended according to the factory’s requirement. From there, the blended coal is fed to the factory on two different belts.In 2010 the plant installed a TEXAS X-ray fluorescence analyser as a trial. It was tested under different conditions on several belts before the customer decided to install six TEXAS analysers on the feed belts to the stackers and two more analysers on the reclaimer belts. All analysers are installed directly on the belt and not on a substream.During the test period blending strategies were developed in close cooperation between the customer and J&C Bachmann. The use of the analysers in conjunction with the blending model has proven that the variation of the reclaimed coal quality was decreased significantly, which results in increased process performance and significant cost savings.CITATION:Bachmann, C C, Bachmann, J F, Cipold, M P and Ha, J, 2017. The Mont Reed iron ore deposit, owned by ArcelorMittal, is situated approximately 140 km southwest of the Mont-Wright mine in the southern region of the Labrador Trough, Canada. Acquired by Québec Cartier Mining (QCM) in the 1960s, the Mont Reed mining property has remained unexploited due to the complex nature of the ore in the area. However, during the last years ArcelorMittal’s R&D team has been dedicated to developing a process to beneficiate the Mont Reed ore and produce high-quality pellet feed suitable for direct reduction furnaces. Extensive research revealed that achieving a good liberation degree of particles required grinding the material below 75 μm (P80 of 53 μm). To find the most effective technology for this task, a detailed comparison between ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding was conducted. Both grinding technologies underwent detailed testing in bench-scale experiments. The ground products were comprehensively characterised, including size distribution analysis and chemical analysis per size fraction. Additionally, liberation analysis was performed using an automated scanning electron microscope (SEM). To determine the grinding specific energy, a method previously developed at Samarco (Brazil) for fine grinding of iron ores was employed. Furthermore, magnetic separation and flotation tests were conducted on the ground products. After a thorough evaluation of all the results, it was observed that both ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding produced samples with similar physical characteristics. However, the vertical mill demonstrated higher efficiency in grinding the material. To conclude the study, an economic evaluation was conducted for both options considering various factors. Overall, ArcelorMittal’s R&D team’s dedicated efforts have brought them closer to unlocking the potential of the Mont Reed ore deposit and paving the way for its future utilisation to the production of high-quality pellet feed.

Gold extraction is largely driven by mineralogical factors, which often cause gold losses to various tailings. Mineralogical factors affecting gold recovery include grain size and shape, surface coating or rimming on gold particles, the presence of cyanide or oxygen-consuming minerals or preg-robbers, the presence of slow-dissolving gold minerals and the refractory nature of submicroscopic gold. Among these factors, locking of fine gold particles in sulfide, silicate and other minerals, either as visible, fine-grained gold inclusions and/or as invisible submicroscopic gold, is by far the most common factor leading to poor gold recovery in gold ore processing. This paper discusses the mineralogical characterisation of gold lost in tailings and its metallurgical implications. The techniques used in characterising the un-recovered gold are also briefly introduced.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

Steelmaking has a significant contribution in producing greenhouse gases and there is a worldwide push towards decarbonising the process. One of the approaches to reduce CO2 emissions is to use hydrogen in the blast furnace (BF) as the reductant gas. However, hydrogen reduction is an endothermic reaction, bringing changes to the temperature distribution in the BF. Understanding iron ore sinter mineralogy and reducibility under a hydrogen atmosphere is essential to optimise the process. In this study, sinter analogues in the Fe3O4-CaO-SiO2 (FCS) ternary system together with industrial sinters were reduced in H2-rich and CO atmospheres and the resulting reducibility and associated mineralogical changes were observed. Results show that magnetite-lime-silica (MLS) sinter analogues had similar reduction rates under H2 and CO, and also higher reducibility than most of the industrial sinters, suggesting that magnetite sinters could be used efficiently in a conventional or hydrogen blast furnace.

Within the first full year of BarrickÆs Cowal Gold Mine operation, the Lake Cowal Foundation Limited (LCF) has already been delivering results consistent with its goal to protect and enhance the natural environment of Lake Cowal and its catchment area. The LCF is a non-profit Environmental Trust established in June 2000 in conjunction with the development consent process for the construction of BarrickÆs Cowal Gold Mine. Its primary goal is to protect and enhance Lake Cowal, a nationally significant ephemeral wetland located 350 km west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Significant concentrations of water birds visit the lake and the Australian Heritage Commission listed Lake Cowal on the Register of the National Estate in 1992. The LCF is managed by a Board of Directors from representative member organisations including the Total Environment Centre, National Parks Association, Nature Conservation Council and Barrick Australia Limited. Although largely funded by Barrick, the Foundation also attracts external funding and works in partnership with a diverse range of other groups and organisations, beyond the mine fence. The total value of currently approved projects is estimated to be in excess of $7.1 million, which includes æin-kindÆ contributions made by the local community and in particular the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority (LCMA) and local farmers. To date, LCF has been involved with the development and implementation of 30 projects with a total of 34 project partners. LCF has worked with over 60 landholders to improve Lake Cowal and its catchment, with 6180 ha of land now being managed for conservation or sustainable farming in the local area. Many landholders have been, or are involved in property planning or participating in other training opportunities. Sustainability of LCF programs and outcomes will be assured by commitments to projects within four key themes: conservation, research and research support, sustainable farming and community education and training. The LCF works independently from the mining company and has no responsibility for the environmental management within the mining lease. It is about capitalising resources generated by the mine to enhance environmental outcomes in the wider Lake Cowal catchment area by working collaboratively with the local community, industry and government authorities to ensure the long-term protection of a unique wetland ecosystem affected by landscape scale degradation.
