Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. Two radioisotope techniques suitable for the rapid laboratory determination of the ash content of coal have been tested ou unwashed coal samples from four Australian coal seams. In one techniqne, measurements of backscattered 238Pu L X-rays and iron K X-rays from finely ground coal samples have been combined to determine ash content in uuwashed coals to ±0.5 weight per ce111 ash (ls) for three seams and 0.9 weight per cent ash for the fourth.The second technique, which involves measurements of the transmission by the coal of narrow beams of 241Am 60 keV and 123Ba 356 keV ? rays, requires less sample preparat ion. The ash was determined to within the range of 0.8 to 2.6 weight per cent for the four seams (unwashed coal). For washed coals, errors are expected to be < ±0.5 weight per cent ash.

"A few situations are first reviewed where practical shortcuts lead to acceptable solutions where none seemed to be possible. These include: The solving of many complex sampling optimisation problems with the simple approach of the worst case policy (WCP). A simple approach to single-stage sampling problems will be mentioned at continuation. In the plants, minimising the impact of border effects in incorrect samplers, so that the resulting samples are approximately correct and acceptable in practice because the bias risk attached to them is controlled. This paper briefly describes the shaft, including sinking, steel sets and their installation, shaft equipment and winders.INTRODUCTIONThe New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd. Service Shaft is a vertical concrete-lined circular shaft, 20 ft. in diameter with -steel sets spaced at 12-ft. centres. The diameter of 20 ft. was established as the minimum that would enable the shaft both to house the proposed hoisting and service equipment and to satisfy ventilation requirements as a downcast airway. The 12-ft. set spacing was based on South African practice in similar types of shafts.The shaft extends from the surface to 28 ft. below No. 22 Level, a total depth of 3,194 ft. Sinking was commenced in September 1946, and equipping completed in January 1955. Initially the shaft was sunk and concrete-lined to a depth of 52 ft., using a stiff-legged crane and clam-shell grab for mucking. Operations were suspended at this depth to allow the installation of the steel sinking head-frame, winders and ancillary equipment.Sinking and concreting were recommenced after four months and continued to a depth of 1,035 ft. 6 in., where the shaft connected with a pilot opening. The concrete lining was poured as sinking progressed and was piped from the surface to this depth, after which all concrete was lowered in buckets and discharged through a distributor suspended in the shaft. A cycle of stripping to the pilot opening and concreting was continued until the shaft reached No. 22 Level. From this level the remaining 28 ft. was sunk full size. All plats were cut and concreted as sinking progressed.

In the Broken Hill South mine tile practice of issuing to the miner a quantity of fuse and a box of caps from which he made up the "rods" required for a particular blast, has been abandoned. Instead, capping stations have been established, and the miner can now obtain, from the magazines, fuses cut to accurate lengths with the detonators attached.Various types of fuse-cutting machines and crimping devices are available, but only those used by the Broken Hill South Mine Ltd. are described in this paper.The fuse-cutting machine, designed by the engineering staff, is an electrically driven unit fitted with a gear box for the purpose of adjusting the rate at which the fuse is fed to the cutting device, thereby enabling fuses of various lengths to be accurately severed from the main coil of fuse.The machine in question is designed to cut 4, 6, and 8-ft. fuses, but no difficulty should be experienced in designing a machine to cut fuses to any required lengths.

The association of deep well turbine type pumps with metal mining is by no means a new one, though undoubtedly each application has certain features of interest, conformable with attendant circumstances. Although all conditions pertaining to a particular operation in one mine are rarely, if ever, duplicated in another mine, it is felt that some aspects will be parallel, or in various ways comparable.Therefore the following descriptions of an installation of a deep well turbine pump as part of dewatering plant in connection with shaft sinking may be of general interest to metal mine operators.The Man and Supply shaft at Mount Isa Mines is designed as shown in plan by Fig. 1. It is the main entrance and service shaft for the entire property and hence is in constant use. Arrangements for sinking must be such as to cause little or no impediment to routinehoisting work. Also, being the main shaft, it has been essential to deepen it in step with successive level developments.During the period of operations at Mount Isa only a limited time has been available to complete succeeding levels down to the present No. 7 haulage level (895 ft.), and sinking operations in soft, broken, leached, and heavy water-bearing country have presented many features militating against reasonable speed and cost. Outstanding among these difficulties has been the large volume of water contained in the pervious brecciated country.

Possibilities and Working of the Specific Agglomeration of Fibrous Materials and Residues Plant based fibrous materials are becoming of increasing interest in a multitude of industrial applications. Main advantages are the specific lower energy demand and virtually closed CO2 cycle, excellent mechanical properties based on low density as well as a high level of recyclables. In contrast, processing and handling of such materials is associated with a number of challenges. These challenges are mainly related to specific morphological characteristics in correlation to fibre length and structure (branching and splices). Specific problems in further processing steps including transport, dosage or storage for natural fibre compounding, result from form-locking bonds leading to burling, clusters or plaits. Technologies of fibre processing are well known, but other than textile based technologies they generally result in intermediate goods which do not allow direct industrial application. The investigation to be presented is based on results of recent research activities and shows two possible technical solutions of innovative fibre agglomeration procedures. These methods allow the conversion of middle to long fibres into a form, which eases further processing and dosage significantly and therefore allows free flowing too. The procedures are based on the working principles of rolling and winding technology. Within the work, both of the patented methods and their respected lab-scaled devices will be described. Further, results will be shown for an up-scaled rolling agglomeration unit applying the developed principle and consisting of multiple process zones. Possible variations of the resulting product characteristics and the impact of different process parameters will be discussed based on the trials with natural fibre (hemp and flax) agglomeration. As a main outcome of the research, product qualities can be supplied according to the requirements of the specific application in correlation to agglomerate strength, porosity or form. In conclusion, recent developments for specific methods of characterization will be depicted.

Magnesite-rich and dolomite-rich ores from the Savage River region of Tasmania are being considered as potential feed material for a commercial process for production of magnesia.Two selected samples have been characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis. The materials differ in calcination behaviour, with magnesite decomposing at a significantly lower temperature than dolomite. Calcination conditions have a marked effect on the rate and percentage of magnesium dissolved as the bicarbonate when slurries of the calcine are leached with carbon dioxide. From a process point of view, the feed should have the highest possible magnesite/dolomite ratio, while the optimum calcination conditions are determined by the behaviour of the magnesite component of the feed.From batch calcination tests, it is apparent that the optimum calcination conditions for magnesite-rich ore are a temperature in the vicinity of 700°C and a calcination time of one hour.

Mine to Mill optimisation is not a recently developed concept. It is one which is finally gaining greater acceptance in the Australian Mining Industry, possibly as a consequence of the downturn in markets and certainly made possible by the development of tools and techniques to measure and predict performance of mining equipment and milling plants. Fragment size after blasting has a major bearing on the performance of all aspects of mining and a major influence on the economics of the mine and mill. The process to optimise fragmentation consists of identifying the key factors, measuring their sensitivity through a modelling and trialing program and conducting economic evaluations on the changes on both the mine and mill. Management of the Ernest Henry copper-gold mine in NorthernQueensland, Australia, has espoused the Mine-to-Mill concept and isactively pursuing excellence in blasting to drive down the total cost of mining. Ernest Henry has extremely hard, wet and heavily jointed geological conditions, and had high powder factors and a large percentage of oversize material reporting to the crusher or ROMstockpile. A blasting improvement program was undertaken betweenErnest Henry Mining, Thiess Contractors and Orica Explosives tooptimise the ore size distribution, particularly the oversize component, as a step to reducing production costs. Measures of success included bringing the rock breaker back from double shifts to part-time operation and increasing direct dumping into the crusher from 70 per cent to 92 per cent. Tools and technologies to predict and measure the performance ofindividual blasts are needed before it is possible to optimisefragmentation or the downstream processes. These include suchspecialised Orica Explosives tools as SABREX, POWERSIEVE, andPOWERLINE and commercially available drill monitors. As importantare the more common still and video camera, borehole loggers,measuring tapes, surveying equipment such as face profilers, and ahigh-speed camera if possible. There are many tools which can be applied however it is rarely necessary or possible to use all of them due to time constraints and a point of diminishing returns. The critical point is knowing what the true parameters of the blast were compared to design - only then can the predictive tools be effectively utilised. Stage one of the program has seen gradual improvement as theunderstanding grew and practices have been implemented resulting inreduced bridging in the crusher, geological mapping with respective blast designs and the oversize component under control. This paper is about a process approach which links tools and technology to understand the fragmentation drivers and then to optimising the size distribution.The continuous improvement program continues...

As the chief field of the gold dredging industry in Otago is the district traversed by the Molyneux River (called above Cromwell the Clutha) and its tributaries, a brief reference to the geology of that region and the origin of its alluvial gold will not be out of place. The prevailing rocks are metamorphic schists, chiefly mica and quartz schists, pr.obably of Silurian age. Though these rocks do not contain many payable quartz reefs, gold appears to be distributed in small quantities all through them,chiefly associated with the quartz lamime and lenses. The river drift, however, contains numerous pebbles of quartzite, quartzoze conglomerate, and fme-grained slate. Seeing that these rocks are hardly known to occur in situ within the watershedof the Molyneux River, though Devonian and carboniferous rocks of similar character occur to the north-east and south-west, it seems probable that the schists were at one time overlaid by carboniferous and Devonian rocks, and that these have been removed by denuding agencies. Be this as it may, it is certain that the schists themselves have been greatly eroded by the action both of water and of ice, and that the resulting drifts have themselves, in many cases, been sorted and re-assorted by the same agents.Consequently the drifts are very varied in character and often developed on a grand scale. In geological age they vary from Early Tertiary (though some may be older) to Recent.

The flooding of open strip coal mines in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley Coalfields of Eastern Australia has the potential to soften the spoil and floor materials to produce “mud”. This mud can act as a slip plane or weak zone when spoil is dumped into it, resulting in geotechnical instabilities. It is therefore important to understand the mechanisms and degree of degradation likely to occur within coal mine spoil of different qualities.To investigate this, five clay mineral-rich coal mine spoil samples were collected from the Bowen Basin, and each sample was subjected to wetting and drying cycles to simulate degradation that could be expected on wetting-up in situ, with their particle size distribution analysed both before and after degradation. These results were compared with the results of a modified slake durability test, in which the entire sample was tested.The paper presents the results of the accelerated degradation and modified slake durability tests on each of the five spoil samples. These results were related to the physical and geochemical characteristics of the samples, which highlighted their importance. The modified slake durability test may be used to rapidly simulate the expected in situ degradation of coal mine spoil on wetting-up, enabling susceptible spoil materials to readily be identified.CITATION:Vangsness, T A, Williams, D J, Ahn, J and Miles, B, 2018. The objective of this paper is to provide a broad qualitative perspective of the needs and costs of infrastructure associated with typical mining projects. Infrastructure may be defined as anything necessary for the development and operation of a project, which is peripheral to the basic extraction, handling and processing of material. As depicted in Figure 1, infrastructure acts as the link between the technological heart of a project and the outside world.

Owing to the increased consumption of sulphuric acid; Australian manufacturers have, from time to time, been seeking for a satisfactory source of sulphur that would make them independent of foreign supplies.Some years ago a considerable amount of acid was obtained from the roasting of Spanish pyrites. This ore, in 1913 or thereabouts, cost 16s. per ton f.o.b. Huelva, and freight to the eastern seaboard of Australia was about 20s. per ton. As the ore contained 48% to 50% of available sulphur, it was costing roughly 9d. or 10d. per unit, and, in addition, the cinder, after roasting, was a product of considerable value to smelters, containing as it did a high percentage of iron suitable for fluxing, and appreciable values in silver and gold.

The rush for alternate iron-units in the last few years spurred a true outbreak of new alternate iron units projects many of them incorporating new process in what can be classified as the.most fruitful and innovative technology outburst, in the steel industry, in decades In a recent paper we focused on what would be, in our opinion, the ultimate targets of the use of alternate iron-units by mini-mills: 1. to improve quality, 2. to reduce cost, 3. to increase plant productivity, and 4. to improve `supplyability'. With these objectives in mind liquid hot-metal, among all possible scrap substitutes, has been proven to be by far the best. This conclusion stems from many different authors who have reviewed the `value in use' of hot-metal against other alternate iron units and measured its impact on steel-shop productivity and cost (Figure 1).

A case study from a current Ausenco project is presented to demonstrate the importance of maintaining high carbon activity to illustrate the driving force for plant improvements such as a carbon regeneration kiln upgrade.This paper revisits the factors that influence carbon activity for gold loading, with emphasis on deactivation by organic solution components such as flotation reagents.Kiln process design requirements for effective thermal regeneration are reviewed including the interaction of parameters such as temperature, kiln atmosphere and residence time.The different types of kilns that have been used for carbon reactivation are described. A check list is provided of what to look for when purchasing a carbon reactivation system for dealing with severely fouled carbon. This covers the ancillary equipment as well as the kiln itself.While the effectiveness of the carbon reactivation kiln is vital to maintenance of high carbon activity it needs to be remembered that this is only the end of pipe solution. It is also important to ensure that reagents such as frothers and flotation collectors are appropriately chosen to maximise recovery and at the same time minimise carbon deactivation.CITATION:La Brooy, S R and Claflin, J K, 2013. The projection of operating costs for mining, processing, and other site operating costs is an exercise which can be fraught with considerable peril. Not only are the physical characteristics of each mineral property unique, but a range of other factors will influence the consultant's approach to compiling cash flow estimates. This paper details some of the techniques used in estimating operating costs for use in order-of-magnitude cost studies and feasibility studies, and describes how to avoid common areas of difficulty. A series of examples relating to open pit gold mining and processing cost estimates illustrate these problems, and various corrective methods are described. The mining and treatment processes, and their associated cost elements, are followed in sequence of operation from on-going ore delineation through to disposal of the product. In addition the problem of assigning management, administration and overhead costs along with taxation allowances is addressed. Of critical importance is the application or possible misapplication of accrual procedures to the cost elements. In many cases such misapplication can introduce more pronounced errors with projects of short duration, such as the typical open pit/C.I.P. gold operation commenced in the last decade. The importance of providing verification of estimates depending upon the standard of the cost study is also investigated, and opinion is provided upon the minimum levels of verification necessary at various stages. Finally, the amalgamation of the various individual cost elements into a coherent whole is reviewed.

Some design and feasibility studies have been made into possible methods of economic recovery of sulphur from smelter gases emitted at Western Mining Corporation's Nickel smelter at KalgoorIie in Western Australia. The smelter discharges some 330 000 tonne/yr of sulphur dioxide in a stream of approximately 6 per cent by volume of S02.Three possible recovery methods have been considered:1. The manufacture of sulphuric acid using the contact process.2. The concentration of sulphur dioxide to a pure form using dimethyl aniline as an absorbing medium.3. The reduction to elemental sulphur using natural gas as the reducing agent.Design studies were carried out by final year chemical engineering undergraduate students at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 1981 under the supervision of the author and other teaching staff of the chemical engineering department. These studies indicate that sulphuric acid manufacture is the economically preferred recovery route.Markets for sulphuric acid include several potential mineral processing applications and the established fertiliser industry.Sulphuric acid is currently manufactured in a number of plants located at coastal regions of Western Australia using imported sulphur. The sulphuric acid is then used for superphosphate or titanium dioxide pigment manufacture at adjacent plants.The possibility is considered of manufacturing superphosphate at Kalgoorlie from locally produced acid obtained from the smelter gases and from phosphate rock railed to the site from the coast. The advantages of such a scheme include improved scale and technology of operation compared with some existing coastal operations, use of a waste material to replace imported sulphur, and avoidance of costs and hazards associated with railing large quantities of sulphuric acid.

The ~2500 km long Kermadec-Tonga arc northeast ofNew Zealand is the longest continuous intraoceanic arc in the world. At least 94 volcanic centres along the arc are submarine, most (87 per cent) within the Kermadec arc (de Ronde et al, 2003a). Volcanic rocks range from basalt to rhyodacite with trace element and isotopic data indicating significant magma source heterogeneity both along and across the arc.   The entire ~1300 km of the Kermadec arc has now been surveyed for hydrothermal emissions (de Ronde et al, 2004). First-stage surveys utilised surface vessels. In February 1996, the first sulfide samples from the southern Kermadec arc were dredged from the Brothers and Rumble II West caldera volcanoes (R/V Tangaroa cruise TAN96/03; Wright et al, 1998; de Ronde et al, 2003b). In September 1998, low-temperature, diffuse venting was discovered at Monowai, Rumble III and Clark volcanoes, and high-temperature, black smoker venting was found within Brothers caldera (R/V Sonne cruise SO-135; Stoffers et al, 1999). The NZAPLUME cruise of March 1999 surveyed 13 volcanic centres (each mainly comprised of single, large volcanoes) of the southern Kermadec arc and documented hydrothermal emissions above seven of them (de Ronde et al, 2001; Baker et al, 2003; Massoth et al, 2003). In July 2001, additional mineralised and hydrothermally altered samples were dredged from Brothers volcano (R/V Tangaroa cruise TAN01/07). The NZAPLUME II cruise of May 2002 confirmed venting was still occurring at all the known hydrothermal sites, and that ten active vent sites occurred along the mid-part of the arc, between Brothers and Raoul Island (de Ronde et al, 2002). In September-October 2004, NZAPLUME III surveyed the northern-most part of the Kermadec arc where another nine volcanic centres are hydrothermally active.   Second-stage exploration of the Kermadec arc hydrothermal systems utilised deep submergence vehicles. In October-November 2004, the Japanese submersible Shinkai 6500 made four dives on Brothers. Samples recovered include vent fluids, chimneys, altered rocks and various animals and microbes. In April-May 2005, a more extensive expedition using the American submersible Pisces V made 23 dives on nine different volcanic centres, eight of them for the first time.   Extensive plume surveys show Brothers volcano is host to the most hydrothermally active sites of all those known along the Kermadec arc. In total, nine dives have been made on Brothers, six on the NW caldera site and three on the cone site. The NW caldera vent site is a long-term hydrothermal system that is today dominated by evolved seawater but has had episodic injections of magmatic fluid. The cone site is a nascent magmatic-hydrothermal system where crack zones localise upwelling acidic waters (de Ronde et al, 2005). A SE caldera site represents the main upflow of a relatively well-established magmatic-hydrothermal system on the seafloor where sulfide-rich chimneys are extant. Each of these different vent sites represent diverse parts of an evolving hydrothermal system, any one of which may be typical of submarine volcanic arcs.

The region we call the West Coast is acknowledged as one of the richest and most diverse mineral provinces in the world. It's the most rugged part of Tasmania and our island is one of the most rugged parts of Australia, so that speaks for itself. A hostile land of razorback mountains, deep ravines, dangerous rivers, almost impenetrable rainforests and a climate that can change from mild to freezing in a matter of hours.

The primary object of the drive is to provide sites for gaining information regarding the behaviour of the ore-bodies well beyond the limits of the present exposures.Due to thermal conditions, the major portion of the work was done on a six-hour shift basis, in contrast to the normal one of seven hours, with a five-day week.
