ONLY two of the Institute's 26 Local Sections were unrepresented at the delegates' three sessions, held on Monday morning and afternoon and Thursday afternoon of the annual meeting. The Philadelphia and Wyoming Sections alone sent no delegates. In all, seven hours were spent most profitably in reviewing the work done by the Institute at headquarters and in the field, comparing ideas and practices in varied activities, and in establishing personal contacts. Cordiality and the co¬operative spirit marked the meeting and apparently no one had any serious grievances to air. Four motions were introduced and unanimously passed. The first, which was introduced by B. L. Sackett, was a recommendation by the delegates that a national committee be appointed to cooperate with Local Sections in the matter of student activities, to promote Institute welfare. It was agreed that this recommendation be made simultaneously to the Board of Directors and to the Mineral Industry Education Division. A subsequent resolution by A. M. Smith was passed asking that a part of the duties of this committee be to secure the opinions of Local Sections as to the most desirable methods of interesting students in the preparation of technical papers, by giving prizes or otherwise, and to report their findings at the Section Delegates' meeting next year.

Boliden Metall Aktiebolag, the prime base metal mining company of Sweden, treats some 10-10.9 t/y (11-12 stpy) of sulphide ore in nine concentrators. During the years considerable effort has been devoted to the development of all phases of the technology of ore prospecting, mining, milling, smelting and refining. This has been necessary due to the complex and low grade ores. The autogenous grinding technique was first studied within the company as early as 1945. Basic test work commenced during the early fifties, whereby the merits of pebble grinding could be evaluated.

IN the study of the rare earths at the authors' laboratory, methods have been devised for preparing pure rare earths and many of their properties'- have been determined. Very little information is found in the literature on the properties of europium metal, which is the scarcest of the naturally occurring rare earths. Since we have recently prepared europium in appreciable quantities, we are in a position to describe the method of preparation and some of the properties of this metal. Metallic europium was first prepared by Klemm and Bommera who heated a mixture of potassium and EuC1, in vacuo, and obtained a mixture of europium metal and KC1. Trombe4 electrolyzed a molten salt bath containing NaC1, KC1 and EuC1, and collected the europium in a molten cadmium electrode as a cadmium alloy. The cadmium was subsequently removed by distillation but the properties of the residue indicate that pure europium was not obtained. McCoy attempted to prepare europium by distilling mercury from europium amalgam, but the stability of the Eu-Hg intermetallic compounds prevented a complete separation of the two elements. The preparation of very pure europium was suggested by previous work in this laboratory1,4 in which ytterbium and samarium were prepared by heating the respective sesquioxides with lanthanum metal turnings to 1450°C in vacuo and distilling ytterbium and samarium from the mixtures. Subsequently, small test experiments showed that europium also could be prepared by this method. A more detailed version of this method was used in the work described in this paper. Klemm and Bommer3 found by X-ray analysis that the metal had a body-centered cubic (bcc) structure with a lattice constant a, = 4.582 ± 0.00A (converted from kX units), with a bulk density of 5.30 g per cu cm. They found europium to be weakly ferromagnetic. Spedding, et al,7 found a,, to be 4.606 ± 0.001A. Barrett' showed that the bcc structure persists throughout the temperature range 5 to 3000K with a, at 5, 78, and 300°K being 4.551 ± 0.003, 4.551 ± 0.004 and 4.577 ± 0.001A, respectively. Trombe1 described europium as being iron gray, malleable, about as hard as neodymium and not attacked by cold water. He estimated the melting point to be between 1100 and 1200°C. THE formation of intermediate phase layers in cementation processes has been subjected to extensive qualitative investigation though to relatively little quantitative study; this work has recently been fully summarized by F. N. Rhines.1 It is necessary here only to enumerate the general conclusions drawn concerning the kinetic laws governing the growth of intermediate layers and to state what is known concerning the structural changes accompanying the generation of phase layers. I. When the intermediate phase is protective in type-i.e., when its density is less than that of the base metal, so that a continuous coating is formed and maintained-the isothermal growth of the phase follows a simple parabolic equation: [1 = ki [I]] where X is the thickness of the alloy layer, k the reaction rate constant, and [t] the time. The applicability of this equation to diffusion processes is tested by plotting the square of the thickness versus time, or by plotting the thickness versus the square root of time; the resultant achievement of a straight line in such a plot has been considered sufficient proof of the validity of this equation. Exceptions have been found where liquid phases are involved in the reaction, where the diffusion layer is cracked,2 and where thin semimetallic oxide and sulphide coatings are formed on metals.3 In the first two cases the thickness increases linearly with time, and in the latter it is a logarithmic function of time. 2. The rate of thickening varies with temperature according to the Arrhenius equation: [k = Ae-QIRT [2]] where k is the parabolic rate constant of Eq. I, or some other rate-descriptive function, A is the action constant, e the base of natural logarithms, Q the heat of activation, R the gas constant, and T absolute temperature. This equation has been found to be generally valid except when transformations occur during reaction in either the base metal or in the reaction layer; in such instances Eq. 2 is still applicable with different values for the constants A and Q above and below the transformation temperature. 3. All phases that are stable at the temperature at which diffusion occurs will appear in the interdiffusion of two components. In some cases certain of the phases may be too thin to be observed and identified easily. Nonequilibrium phases have never been noted in thick reaction layers; i.e., layers of a thickness that may be discerned microscopically. The relative thickness of each phase in a diffusion layer is proportional to the concentration gradient and to the rate of diffusion in that phase.4 The reaction layers tend to have a

Stock piling-and by that I mean well-organized stock piling on a substantial scale-is almost as old as the hills themselves. It was back in early Biblical times, as recounted in the Book of Genesis, that Joseph was charged by Pharaoh with the responsibility of stock piling food during the seven years of plenty to guard against the seven subsequent years of famine that were revealed by the Pharaoh's dream. And this same policy of storing up food or materials to provide for future anticipated emergencies can be traced repeatedly down through the ages. So our own efforts are anything but new. Our modern concept of stock piling-the purchase and storage of strategic materials to assure supplies needed in time of some future war- stems from our experience in World War I. In 1920, the War Department was charged by Congress with the responsibility of procuring all War Department supplies and mobilizing industry in the event of another war. During the two decades that followed there were many authoritative studies made of our deficient mineral problem, all of which pointed out the urgent necessity of stock piling certain strategic materials as a reserve against future war. One such study, made in 1925 through the combined efforts of the Mining and Metallurgical Society and the AIME, was done at the ex- press request of the War Department. THE system molten copper-oxygen-sulphur is of interest from both the practical and theoretical standpoints; practically, because oxygen and sulphur play an important role in the commercial production of copper, and theoretically because it offers a chance to study the reaction between an oxide gas, SO2, and a molten metal. Reactions of this type, such as that between CO or C02 and molten iron, are important in many metallurgical operations. Again, the determination of any gas-metal equilibrium is of theoretical interest and value insofar as it contributes to the general development of the laws for solution of gases in metals. This problem is being given an increasing amount of attention in modem metallurgy. This paper is the first of a series and presents the results of a determination of the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper at temperatures from 1100° to 1500°C., and pressures from about 20 mm. of mercury to somewhat above atmospheric. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK The solubility of gases in most liquids has been found to obey Henry's law, which states that for a fixed temperature the amount of gas dissolved is directly proportional to the pressure. However this law does not hold for liquid metals. Instead, it appears that for many gases, particularly the simple diatomic ones such as 02, N2 and H2, the amount dissolved in liquid metals is directly proportional to the square root of the pressure. This is known as Sieverts' law. It may be recognized as a special case of Henry's law, which applies when the solute gas is dissociated into atoms or when it reacts with the solvent metal to form solute molecules containing single atoms of the gaseous elements, as, for example: [2M -}-G2 = 2MGK =G) IYf X[I]] which, if the solubility is not too high and the concentration of metal therefore nearly constant, can be simplified to: [MG = Ki Pa,[2]] Following the same reasoning, it would be expected that the solubility of SO2 in copper would be proportional to the cube root of the pressure, the reaction being as follows: [6Cu + S02 = Cu2S + 2Cu20[3] K Cu2S X (Cu20)2(Cu)e(Psm)[4]] or, neglecting the change in metal concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume V of gas absorbed: [K1 =or Vdo,= K2/PBO [5] PsO]

The effect of strain rate and temperature on the critical resolved shear stress for (1100) [1120] prismatic slip was determined for the intermediate hexagonal phase containing about 67 at. pct Ag and 33 at. pct Al. Whereas the flow stress increased only slightly as the test temperature was first decreased below room temperature, a rapid increase inflow stress was obtained with yet greater decreases in temperature from about 240" to 4°K. The effect of both temperature and strain rate on the flow stress over the low-temperature range could be completely rationalized in terms of the Peierls mechanism when the deformation is controlled by the rate of nucleation of pairs of kinks. A few years ago Mote, Tanaka, and Dorn1 observed that the critical resolved shear stress for prismatic slip of a 67 at. pct Ag plus 33 at. pct A1 hexagonal intermediate phase by the (1100)[1120] mode decreased precipitously as the test temperature was increased from 4" to about 160°K. Their results for both basal and prismatic slip are given in Fig. 1. It is obvious that only the flow stress for prismatic slip is strongly temperature-dependent, whereas the flow stress for basal slip is independent of temperature. If the temperature dependence of the flow stress were primarily due to interstitial impurities, it might be expected that they would influence the flow stress for basal slip as well. Since the activation volume at 115°K for prismatic slip was determined to be about 15b3, where b is the Burgers' vector, this thermally activated deformation process was tentatively ascribed as being due to the Peierls mechanism. But the various analyses of the Peierls mechanism then available as formulated by Seeger2 and also by Lothe and Hirth3 did not agree well with the experimental data. Since that time a more realistic theory for the operation of the Peierls mechanism under conditions where the strain rate is determined by the rate of nucleation of pairs of kinks has been presented by Dorn and Rajnak.4 The present investigation was, therefore, undertaken in order to provide the essential data for a careful check on the agreement between this theory and the low-temperature deformation by prismatid slip of the above-mentioned Ag2A1 intermediate phase. The magnetization curves for specimezs containing superparmagnetic particles are considered. It is shown that the curves may differ from a Langezlin function because of particle anisotropy, particle interactions , and the presence of a size distribution of particles. The various causes of particle anisotropy are considered, and magnetization curves for specimens with cubic and uniaxial anisotropy are presented. The magnetization curves depend on the In the particle-size below 100A it is quite difficult to obtain quantitative size and shape information on precipitate particles. All of the available techniques have their limitations; however, quantitative applications of superparmagnetism have not been developed as fully as possible due to a lack of analysis of the complete magnetization curve. With such an analysis it appears possible to obtain from a single magnetization curve of a specimen containing randomly oriented SPM (superparamagnetic) particles a quantitative volume distribution and a description of the particle shape.* sign of the anisotropy energy and in the case of a negative uniaxial anisotropy (prolate spheroids) the resulting curves may differ very considerbly from a Langevin function. A graphical technique is developed whereby it is possible to separate out the effects of the size distribution, the particle interaction, and the particle anisotropy. Thus it is possible to obtain quantitative values for both the particle shape and the size distribution. Langevin function2 I/Is = ctnh(HVIs/k T)-k T/HVIS [ 1 ] where I, is the saturation magnetization, V the particle volume, H the applied field, T the particle temperature, k the Boltzmann constant, and I the magnetization in the direction of the applied field. Such behavior is rarely if ever observed in actual systems. One explanation for this is that the SPM particles do possess a significant anisotropy and thus the magnetic energy associated with the particle depends on the direction of magnetization in a more complicated way than for the isotropic particle of Eq. [I]. In general the magnetic energy E of an isolated SPM particle embedded in a nonmagnetic matrix can be expressed as a sum of several contributions: E = Eh + Ed+Es+Ec [2] where Eh is the external field energy, Ed the energy resulting from the particle demagnetizing factor, E, the magnetostriction energy, and E, the crystalline anisotropy energy. In each term we consider only the part dependent on the orientation of the magnetization vector and the particle axes as the shape of the magnetization curve will be determined by these contributions. The following report is published for the information of the members Meetings. Two meetings for the reading and discussion of papers, etc., have been held during the year 1906-namely, the Ninetieth meeting, held February 21st to 24th at Bethlehem, Pa., and the Ninety-first meeting, held July 24th to 27th in London, England, in connection with the meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute. The proceedings of these meetings, including descriptions of the entertainments and excursions connected therewith, have already been published and distributed to the members of the Institute; the Bethlehem meeting in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 9, May, 1906, pp. 497 to 508, and the London meeting in Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 12, November, 1906, pp. 809 to 908. The proceedings of the London meeting were published separately and distributed among the many individuals and concerns whose cordial friendship and delightful hospitality contributed so largely to the success of the visits in London and environs and the excursions in England, Scotland and Germany. At the Bethlehem meeting, 37 papers and discussions were presented and the names of 198 members and guests were regis¬tered at the Institute headquarters ; this number, however, does not represent all who were present at the sessions and excur¬sions. At the London meeting, 26 papers and discussions were presented, not including 5 of the papers and discussions read before the Iron and Steel Institute at the joint session with the American Institute of Mining Engineers, which, by a mutual agreement between the Councils of the two Institutes, have been selected to be republished in the Bi-Monthly Bulletin and Transactions of the Institute. WILBER JUDSON is one of that fairly large group of mining engineers that graduated at an Eastern college, worked his way up in various jobs in the West and in the Latin-American countries, and finally came to New York as an administrative officer of a large mining company. Since coming to New York he has been a loyal friend and counselor of the A.I.M.E., and is now serving a second term as one of its Directors, his first term covering the period 1935-1938. Mr. Judson was born in the capital city of Michigan on July 26, 1880. Probably it was his roving spirit rather than professorial urging that was responsible for the fact that four colleges were responsible for his education: Northwestern, University of Michigan, Harvard (S.B., 1901), and the Michigan College of Mines (graduate study). In his first ten years of professional work he might have been found serving as mine foreman at Catamarca in the Argentine, as superintendent of the Inter Ocean mine at Sunshine, Colo.. as foreman for the Cerro Prieto, Magdalena, Sonora, as superintendent of the Hudson Iron Co. in New York, or as manager of the Dolores mine in Chihuahua for the Mines Co. of America, or in Spain, or in Panama.

Y.:—Mr. Hewett's paper is one of exceptional interest, because it not only adds an important contribution regarding one of the rarer, valuable elements, but also because it introduces compounds hitherto unknown and in associations no less novel. While we have occasionally discovered and recorded asphaltite in metalliferous deposits, for example in the Joplin and Granby districts, we have not seen a metallic ore in a deposit eesentially asphaltite. The source and method of introduction afford a subject well worth serious reflection.

A switch to refractory-type slurry pump linings has significantly reduced maintenance costs arising from liner failure at a Missouri lead mill. The pumps routinely handle a slurry consisting of 79 to 81% solids with occasional tramp iron, and are subjected to intense abrasion which previously wore out rubber liners in anywhere from three days to two months. Average liner life at the 1.5-million-t/y (1.6-million-stpy) operation was 30 days. Experimentation with mild steel liners and even manganese steel liners failed to extend liner life beyond two months.

The work of Americanism is getting under way slowly but surely. The purpose of the Auxiliary is to build for all time and it therefore wishes to lay its foundations securely, feeling that the true understanding and adoption of the ideals of Americanism are the safeguards of our country from the perils of anarchy, and the bond of union between labor, brains, and capital. We hope to have reports from several directors to print next month and here append the report of the Director for the New York Section, Mrs. W. Y. Westervelt.

ARTHUR F. BRAID,* New. York, N. Y. (written discussion ?). -I have read Mr. Cain's paper with a very great deal of interest. The subject is one that is worth a great deal of thought and research at this time. It is a well-known fact that the strong affinity of steel or, iron for oxygen is perhaps the main detriment to sound production, and, as the author states, it is-indeed remarkable that today there are no analytical methods in general use in steel works for determining the gaseous con-stituents of steel.
