A theoretical analysis of alloy solidification in which the effective partition coefficient, k, of the solute is allowed to vary as a function of interface position is performed. A variety of solute distm'butions in the solid is predicted depending upon the functional dependence of k with interface position. Conversely, the variation of k with interface position required to produce a particular solute distributzon in the solid can be calculated. These preciictions have been tested by controlling the width of the momentum boundary layer in the liquid as a function of interface position with a rotating mugnetic field. One of the objects of controlled solidification is to utilize the freezing process for the preparation of crystals of specific materials containing a predetermined distribution of solutes. For example, a thermoelectric power generation material may exhibit a figure of merit, 2,' as a function of temperature, T, and solute concentration, C, as illustrated in Fig. 1. If we wish to use this material in a device between the temperature limits T1 to T2 a significantly greater efficiency will result from the device if the thermoelectric element illustrated in Fig. 1 consists of a range of solute concentrations appropriately located with respect to the temperature distribution rather than using a sample of constant solute concentration. THE physical properties of uranium have been reviewed by Katz and Rabinowitch.1 Their review includes thermal conductivity data for ternperatures above 375°K. Recently, Mendelssohn and Rosenberg' have published data on the thermal conductivity of uranium from 2" to 20°K. Our measuremerits indicate the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity in the temperature interval from 20" to 300°K. Electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power were measured on the same sample. The material studied was normal uranium which had been heated at 700°C in a lead bath for 10 min and then quenched in a water bath held at 50°C. From this material a rod M in. in diameter and 2 1/2 in. long was machined. Two 0.040 in. holes were drilled into the rod 1 3/4 in. apart. Copper-constantan thermocouples for temperature and potential measurements were soldered to copper pins which were pressed tightly into these holes. Details of the equipment and experimental techniques used in making the measurements have been described elsewhere." Fig. 1 shows micrographs of a section of the sample studied. Fig. la was taken with unpolarized light and shows impurity inclusions, probably uranium carbide. Fig. lb, showing the same field, was taken with polarized light and gives some indication of the grain size and twinning within the grains. (San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) THE first successful bucket-elevator dredge to operate in California was put in commission at Oroville in March, 1898. There had been numerous previous attempts at dredging, but none of the earlier boats proved a success. The gold-miners in California early conceived the idea of a machine to dig gravel from the beds and bars of auriferous streams that were inaccessible by the methods then employed, and it was only a few months after the discovery of gold in California that such a machine was. shipped around Cape Horn from New York to San Francisco. This was, however, but the forerunner of many failures in gold-dredging, and was soon at the bottom of the Sacramento river. During succeeding years many other unsuccessful attempts were made, and it was not until 1897 that a dredge of the single-lift bucket-elevator type was floated on the Yuba river. This dredge was built by the Risdon Iron Works for R. H. Postlethwaite, and would probably have been a success if it had been operated on some of the rich Oroville ground instead of in a turbulent stream, where the dredge was wrecked during a flood, and was not repaired. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of California, showing gold-dredging areas. It is not my intention to narrate in detail the history of the early failures in gold-dredging, and the various steps in the development of the modern boat, but merely to touch upon this in a general way, and to call attention to the wide difference in capacity and operating-cost between the first successful dredge, with an actual capacity of 600 cu. yd. per day-though its rated capacity was in excess of this-and the present modern dredge with 15-cu. ft. buckets, and an average capacity of 250,000 cu. .yd. per month. The steam-generating plant at the Garfield smelter of The American Smelting and Refining Co. consists of two divisions in which the boilers are classed as direct-fired or waste-heat. The direct-fired boiler plant consists of eight 330-boiler hp. type K-19 and S-I 7 Stirling boilers located in the boiler room adjacent to the power house, and two 330-boiler hp. Stirling type K-19 boilers in the reverberatory building, which formerly were connected to a reverberatory furnace but now are arranged for direct firing. All direct-fired boilers are now fired with natural gas. The waste-heat boiler plant consists of all units connected to reverberatory furnaces, and receiving heat from the exit gases therefrom. In this classification there are two 490-boiler hp. Erie City vertical water-tube boilers, and six 330-boiler hp. type K-19 Stirling water-tube waste-heat boilers. Each furnace has boilers arranged in battery setting. The boilers are directly in front of the furnace and connection is made through a short uptake and flue (Fig. 1). The Stirling boiler settings rest on concrete foundations at ground level, with the furnace uptake and flue at a low elevation. The Erie boilers are carried on steelwork some 15 ft. above ground level, and stand against the face of the uptake with no connecting flue. The constructional requirements of a larger furnace dictated this type of setting.

Therrnal resistance is measured on GaAs laser diodes in the temperature range 77" to 300°K. These data show that typically the thermal resistance increases fifteen times from 77 to 300°K. The increase is attributed to the decrease in thermal conductivity of Gds. Nornzalized thermal-resistance experimental and calculated from published thermal-conductivity data) values are compared and good agreement shown. In many practical applications, it is desirable to obtain high average power output from laser diodes. Average power output is determined in large measure by the external efficiency and thermal resistance of the diode.'-3 The average input power with which a laser diode may be pumped is dependent on the thermal resistance. Thermal resistance has been studied over the temperature range from 77" to 300°K which is usually of interest in practical applications. This correspondence presents data on thermal resistance for GaAs laser diodes and compares them to values calculated from thermal-conductivity data. Junction heating arises from three distinct components: 1) joule heating, 2) nonradiative recombinations, and 3) reabsorption of radiation. In high-threshold lasers, joule heating predominates.4 Typically, the nonradiative recombination is not negligible and contributes significantly to junction heating. The loss caused by reabsorption may be of the order of the joule-heating loss.' The fabrication and the geometry of laser diodes have been described in other publications.5 The data presented were obtained from diodes which were fabricated from the same region of a wafer to minimize differences. Fig. 1 shows four types of heat sinks employed in this study. In types 1 and 2, the laser cavities are alloyed; pressure contacts are employed in types 3 and 4, and indium is plated on the inside faces to improve the intimacy of contact between the diode and the heat sink. The thermal resistance R is defined by the following relationship: where AT is the junction-temperature rise above the heat-sink temperature for the diode power dissipation Pd. For measurement of thermal resistance, a direct current is passed through the junction, in the range from 1 to 50 pct of threshold. The diode is placed in the laser mode by superimposing a current pulse of low-duty cycle on the direct current.3 Junction-temperature rise is obtained from the time-resolved laser spectrum at the leading edge of the current pulse.' Typically, the laser line shift is 2.5A per OK. The resolution employed in these experiments is 0.5A; therefore, the accuracy in the temperature measurement is 0.2K. Typically, the temperature rise is 2" to 20°K. The power dissipation is the difference between the dc power input, and the radiation power exiting the diode. The measurement accuracy is less than 1

Lithium chemical plant extraction methods are discussed with reference to 1) base exchange with alkali sulphates; 2) processing based on roasting with lime; 3) miscellaneous methods; and 4) application of the Lithium Corp. process to extraction of lithium from run-of-mine, low grade spodumene ore, or concentrates. IN the early days of the lithium industry most of the production was from lepidolite, zinnwaldite, and amblygonite. Nearly all the early extraction processes described in the literature involve heating the finely ground mineral with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. On subsequent water leaching most of the bases present in the mineral (especially aluminum) are dissolved as sulphates. As a result, the leach solution required extensive chemical purification before the lithium could be precipitated as carbonate. Following the remarkable growth of the lithium industry to its present size, zinnwaldite and amblygonite ores must be considered of minor importance only. Attention is now focused on spodumene, abundant enough in North America to be a major source of supply, and there are important supplies of lepidolite and petalite in Africa. The extraction processes described below all apply to spodumene, although several will also operate on other lithium minerals, such as petalite. Base Exchange with Alkali Sulphates: A distinct advance was made with the disclosures of Wadman and von Girsewalt. In these methods the finely ground silicate ore (spodumene or lepidolite) is intimately mixed with an excess of alkali sulphate (usually K2SO4) in at least a 1 to 1 proportion, and the mixture was heated to a relatively high temperature. Base exchange results, with the formation of lithium sulphate. A water leach dissolves the lithium sulphate, together with the excess potassium sulphate. Successful operation of this type of process requires very thorough grinding and mixing, as well as careful temperature control. The use of K2SO4 is objectionable from cost considerations since purification of lithium carbonate requires the use of potassium carbonate, if the K2SO4 is to be recovered and recycled. The lower solubility of K2SO4 as compared with Na2S04 is also objectionable, since it limits the concentration of the Li2SO4 solution to be precipitated by K2SO4. Early laboratory-scale investigation of this process by Lithium Corp. was not encouraging. Other related base exchange processes are those of Lindblad, Wallden, and Sivander3 and Sivander, Gard, Villestad, and Wallen4. The former covers the reaction of lithium silicate minerals with a sodium sulphate solution, at 100" to 300°C (under pressure), while the latter involves the extraction of silicate minerals with molten sodium sulphate. Both these processes would seem to be difficult and expensive to operate.

This paper proposes two units (believed to be new) for designating, respectively, capacity and efficiency for primary and intermediate crushers. Capacity Operators know that the tonnage of rock that can be put through a particular crusher in a given time depends primarily upon the crusher setting (open setting for jaw and primary gyratory types; closed setting for cones and rolls), and secondarily on the lithological character of the feed, its maximum size, the amount of fines that it carries, its moisture content, and the method of feeding. The proposed capacity formula states a relationship between all of these factors in one empirical equation, as follows: Tr = TR80K'K" [I] in which Tr, called "reduction tons per hour" is the new capacity unit; T = tons of feed per hour requiring crushing; R80 = "80-per cent reduction ratio"; and K, K', and K" are constants that approximate quantitatively lithological character, moisture content and method of feeding, respectively. T is the hourly weight of material in the feed that is coarser than the coarsest discharge of the crusher. (For marked departures from the normal specific-gravity range—2.5 to 2.7—T should be adjusted to corresponding volumes.) In the crushers under consideration, discharge from the crushing zone is limited by the minimum dimension of a particle. Passage of the particle through a square-mesh screen is limited by its intermediate dimension. Sheppardl has shown that the ratio of maximum: intermediate: minimum average dimensions of broken rock fragments may be taken as about 1.5:=:0,6 for nonslabby rocks such as are normally crushed, while for slabby rocks, such as thin-bedded sedimentaries, foliated schists and gneisses, and the blocky metamorphics, the ratio is of the average order I.3:I:o.3, with the possibility of an even smaller relative value for the thickness. Gaudin2 finds the corresponding ratio for —I50 + 200-mesh pyrite to be I.4: I:0.6. The hourly tonnage of crusher-plant feed, therefore, should be diminished by the amount thereof that would pass a square-mesh screen of which the aperture is S times the crusher setting, where S is a shape factor with the value 1.7 for rocks that break exceptionally cubic; 2 for ores and rocks that exhibit no appreciabie tendency to slabbiness; and 2.5 to 3, or, in exceptional cases, even larger, when the tendency to slabbiness is marked. R80 is the quotient of the theoretical square-mesh aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the feed, divided by the aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the product. I. INTRODUCTION THE smelting plant of the British Columbia Copper Co. at Greenwood, B. C., now closed because of the decline in the price of copper due to the European war, is of special interest to metallurgists for several reasons. It was successfully smelting in blast furnaces the lowest grade copper ore of all plants in America. In order to do so, it had to run at' very high efficiency, which necessarily required a large tonnage per square foot of hearth area, together with the minimum amount of labor and other costs. The furnaces smelted daily 2,250 tons of ore (6.62 tons per sq. ft. of hearth area), carrying 0.85 per cent. of copper, at a smelting cost of $1.18 per ton. The entire plant required 130 men to operate it and keep up repairs, showing a labor efficiency of about 17.5 tons per man per day. In the present paper, the method of obtaining these results is shown. Most of the information contained in this description I obtained as Assistant Superintendent, during the two years preceding the present shutdown. Tars paper is a review of the principal details of cyanide practice in several of the modern plants in America, mainly during the year 1908. Two of the mills, the Goldfield Consolidated and the Vets, Colorado, are not yet prepared to give data, the former having started about Jan. 1, 1909, and the latter not yet being completed. 1. HISTORICAL REVIEW AND INTRODUCTION. THE development of the mining industry in Sardinia dates from the application of the minim law of 1859, which, following the example of the French mining law of 1810, declared prospecting to be free, and suppressed the liens which had previously attached the mine to surface ownership. The first ore-dressing plants were installed by German engineers upon the classic models of the Harz and of Freiberg; but in 1880 Sardinia commenced to open a new path in that industry, utilizing the refuse from the mining of rich, selected minerals, of poor deposits, and of mixed ores. The first experiments were attempts to adapt the existing apparatus to local conditions, but progress was rapid, as was demonstrated already in 1887 by the calamine-dressing-mill of Monteponi, which exhibited a large plant designed in accordance with the experience gained, and constructed entirely in the machine-shops of the country, after new models and designs.1 This example was followed two years later by the Société Malfidano, with a large plant of the same sort, and with the reconstruction of the old-fashioned-dressing-mill, built in 1880 by the Austro-Belgian Company. In 1900, almost all the mines of Sardinia had adopted the new designs, and the island contained 32 concentrating-works, employing 2,000 h.p. and 1,924 workmen. Since that time, there have been added a large dressing-mill for blende at Gennamari, and two for calamine, at San Giovanni and at Masua, while the establishments at other mines have been enlarged and perfected. THE constants in question pertain to the total radiation and the spectral radiation of a uniformly heated enclosure, or so-called black body. These constants have been determined for the range within which temperatures can be measured with thermocouples. Conversely, using these constants and suitable instruments, such as an optical pyrometer, for example, it is possible to determine temperatures far above the range attainable with the most refractory thermocouples. The formula of Stefan Boltzmann for expressing the total radiation of a black body is R = kT4 in which k is the coefficient or "constant" under discussion. In view of the fact that total radiation pyrometers are usually calibrated on an arbitrary scale, there is no great demand for an exact value of the coefficient of total radiation in absolute value. However, it is intimately connected with the constant of spectral radiation; hence, an accurate determination of the constant k gives a check on the constant of spectral radiation. The distribution of radiation in the spectrum of a black body is represented by Planck's equation, E? = C1?-5 (e c/?T - 1)-'. The spectral radiation constant c, in this formula, is useful in optical pyrometry and in establishing a high temperature scale. The numerical value of the constant c has been determined in the range of temperatures measurable with thermocouples and, also, by extending the temperature scale to higher temperatures by means of total radiation measurements.

IN addition to its base-metal and coal mining operations, the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company has, for the past quarter century, been one of the few large American mining companies interested in dredging. Its activities in this field are confined to gold, and to Alaska, but it is the largest operator in that territory, with twelve huge dredges available to work during the summer on the frozen ancient beach sands at Nome and the gravels of Fairbanks. These operations will be described separately.

Change of Meeting from Birmingham to Chattanooga. In consequence of the disturbed conditions attending a long¬continued labor strike in Alabama, the meeting of the Institute was changed from Birmingham, Ala., to Chattanooga, Tenn., where it will. begin on Thursday evening, Oct. 1, 1908. Information. of this change bad been sent to the newspapers through the Associated Press, and by circular to all members, when news was received of the sudden and unexpected termination of the strike referred to. It was, unfortunately, too late to change once more the arrangements for the meeting. But it is hoped that the cordial invitation of the citizens of ,Birmingham may be renewed and accepted at a future time, not too remote. Office Facilities for Visiting Members. A separate room in the suite occupied by the American Institute of Mining Engineers on the ninth floor of the United Engineering Society Building, has been equipped with furniture and telephone extension for the temporary use of members of the Institute or of sister societies, or visitors suitably accredited. Abstract-Minas de San Luis, S.A. operates the old Tayoltita mine located in the Sierra Madre Occidental in Durango, Mexico. Yearly production is 55 000 kg (1.7 million troy ox) of silver and 1000 kg (31,000 troy ox) of gold from milling 165 000 t/y (181,900 stpy) obtained from fissure veins. A 4.4 km (2.75 miles) adit, to intersect the veins below existing workings, was completed in 1974. The adit and ancillary projects facilitated extensive mechanization of the mine, ramp development of it, integration of duplicate facilities and elimination of obsolete facilities. It provided a deep-level access for exploration and development of the veins, and resulted in a 25% increase in production with the same labor force. The cost of the in-house financed project was $3.4 million.

This chapter deals with the systems of laws by which governments regulate the exploration for and production of the minerals within their jurisdictions. It is a summary, restricted by necessary space limitations, of material assembled by the author for a publication of the United States Bureau of Mines, "Summary of Mining and Petroleum Laws of the World," (Information Circular 80 1 7, 196 1. ) The present study is organized in three parts, dealing with (1) the historical background of these legal systems, (2) laws of the United States, and (3) laws of other countries of the world. The reader's attention is invited to the acknowledgments at the end of the chapter, which inadequately express the appreciation due those who have assisted in the collection of this material. Part I. Historical Development of Major Western Systems of Land Tenancy with Respect to the Ownership and Control of Minerals The use of metals in primitive societies was largely confined to the manufacture of weapons for self-preservation. The ruler's control over copper, then bronze, then iron, was essential to maintenance of his own ascendancy at home and his group's position against neighbors who had access to similar metals. Ancient societies were thus characterized by the ruling group's ownership of minerals and metals. The Egyptian civilization, which emerged in the fourth millenium B.C. upon the agricultural subjugation of the lower valley of the Nile, was responsible for extensive development of the upper valley as a source of mineral wealth. The production of gold during the height of that civilization has been estimated at $30,000,000 per year, thus equaling the early placers of California and Australia. The mines of Egypt were the property of the Pharaohs and were controlled at their direction. Greek mining developed a different scheme of land tenancy which more closely resembled modem concepts. The application of the law of supply and demand to the sale of crude oil is generally conceded, but the motives underlying the buyer's (refiner's) demands are not always obvious to the seller (producer). In some cases this obscurity has led to the conclusion that the refiner may be unnecessarily particular when he selects one crude and rejects another. This preference, however, is very largely the reflection of the refiner's product demands and the quality of the stocks obtainable from the selected crude. The purpose of this paper is to point out critical characteristics of the major classes of refined products and to show how crudes vary in their suitability for such products. With relatively few exceptions, available processing methods and addition agents make it theoretically possible to produce any type of refined product from any crude source, although it may not be economi-cally sound to do so. The widespread application of thermal cracking for converting higher boiling stocks into gasoline is well known. More recently cracking and refining in the presence of catalysts9 have been developed, as well as various processes for polymerizing lighter hydro-carbons into gasolines having desirable characteristics.6 For several years, selective solvents have been applied commercially to refining inferior quality kerosene, Diesel fuel and lubricating oil distillates .3 Improved methods for refining lubricating oils from crude residua,4 formerly suitable only for fuel, are now in use and a number of special solvent processes are available for dewaxing lubricating oils to low pour point.5 These improved refining methods have been developed not only to meet the demand for improved product quality but also to enable the refiner to obtain quality products from crude sources that would not yield such products by the older refining methods. In many cases, the utilization of these modern refining tools necessi-tates an appreciable expenditure for equipment as well as added manufac-turing costs, and their application therefore must be justified economically. Despite the availability of such tools, the added processing costs involved and yields obtainable may render their application entirely impractical.
