THE object of a technical paper is to communicate new technical knowledge, the paper being the vehicle of communication and the existence of new knowledge its reason for being. It follows that the development of information worthy of communication, the criterion being novelty, is prerequisite to exercising the privilege of communication. The act of communication is achieved when the reader perceives the nature of the new knowledge, i.e., when he understands it. A paper achieving this objective is an acceptable technical paper. Development of new knowledge has as one of its purposes the increase of the existing state of knowledge and the enjoyment of the benefits derived therefrom. Technical knowledge is a collection of facts so ordered as to make apparent, relations existing between the facts. When the interrelations have been exposed the facts have been interpreted or explained Three broad, overlapping categories of technical papers may be recognized: papers consisting of (a) a report of facts, (b) an explanation of facts, or (c) a combination of a report and an interpretation. Ideally a technical paper should belong to one of the last two categories but current practice is to accept papers belonging to any of the three categories. Based on a small sample drawn from the scientific and engineering literature, the relative frequency of the three types is a: b: c:: 20:1:14. If the sample be limited to engineering literature, the ratios become a:c::2:1; type (b) being nonexistent. This large departure from the ideal is a consequent of the

The growth of grain boundary films and Widmanstiitten plates of proeutectoid cementite in hypereutectoid steels ulas considered quantitatively in three plain carbon steels and one "pure" iron-carbon alloy. Growth was found to take place at a slower rate than would be predicted on the basis of a model invoking rate control by long range diffusion of carbon. The films in the pure alloy grew faster than those in the plain carbon steels. A possible explanation is suggested. In 1904, Nernsst' and Brunner2 postulated that ionic crystals growing in supersaturated aqueous solutions grew at rates determined by diffusion through the solution to the growing crystal interface. The gradient down which the diffusion took place was assumed to be fixed by the supersaturated bulk solution concentration, the concentration dt the crystal surface and some arbitrary distance. The flux of material to the crystal was described as Flux where D is the diffusion coefficient, A the crystal surface area, Ci the bulk solution concentration, Co the saturated solution concentration, and 6 the thickness of the diffusion zone. It is obvious that the expression is an adaptation of F+ick's3 first law of diffusion (steady state). This was the initial formulation of what will be defined here as "diffusion controlled growth," i.e., growth limited by the long range diffusion of a component either to or from the advancing interface assuming both phases at the interface to be in equilibrium. This idea of equilibrium interface concentration implies an infinite reaction rate at the interface. Volmer, Zener,' and 11schner6 have derived expressions for the diffusion controlled growth of spherical precipitates in metallic systems. These analyses agree that the growth in a given direction should be parabolic with time. Brown and Hawkes7 observed that graphite, formed both from the decomposition of cementite and from the decomposition of eutectoid austenite in cast irons, grew according to a parabolic relationship and, therefore, concluded that the laws of diffusion controlled growth, as defined above, were obeyed. They, among others, failed to consider, however, that parabolic growth is a necessary, but not sufficient, condition for diffusion controlled growth. Mehl and Dube"' have pointed out that equilibrium may not be realized because the concentration at the interface cannot change instantaneously from that of the bulk to the saturation value. Furthermore, they propose that an equilibrium solute concentration in the parent phase adjacent to the precipitate would remove the thermodynamic activity gradient across the interface and, thus, stop the growth process. Frisch" has also emphasized the importance of interface concentrations that vary throughout the growth of a new phase. The variation in activity across an interface, as discussed by Onol' and Cahn and Hilliard,12 is of fundamental importance to this question. Ham13 considered the data of Turnbull14 on the growth of barium sulfate in aqueous solutions. He concluded that the data could be analyzed in terms of a radiation-type boundary condition. Flux across interface = K (c, - C,) [21 where C, is the concentration in the solution at the interface, Co the saturated solution concentration, and K the proportionality constant. The edgewise growth of Widmanstlitten plates, frequently referred to as the rate of lengthening, was first considered by Zener.'' Basing a mathematical analysis on steady-state (constant velocity) growth he concluded that where G is the growth rate, D the solute diffusivity, Ci the concentration in the bulk, Co the equilibrium interface concentration, C, the concentration in the precipitate, a a constant, Y the radius of curvature of the edge of the plate, and rC the critical radius, i.e., the radius which would increase the activity of solute at the interface at equilibrium under the influence of capillarity to that of the bulk. This paper is concerned with the description of grinding characteristics in a batch grinding system. A mathematical model was developed and used for simulating the system on an analog computer. A general equation describing the change of selected size fractions with respect to time is presented. The empirical verification of the model is discussed. In order to understand the performance of a grinding system, it would be desirable to have a mathematical description of the system's behavior. The development of a mathematical model to describe the performance of a batch dry-grinding operation was investigated. This is the first step toward reaching the objective of a practical mathematical description of a grinding system that could be employed for process control and optimization of a simple or complex grinding circuit. Although this article is concerned only with batch grinding performance, experimental work is being conducted to extend the model to continuous grinding systems. BASIC PROCESS CONSIDERATIONS In a paper dealing with the probability theory of wet ball milling, Roberts1 correlated the rate of change of oversize material, C, with energy input, E, as follows where the energy input is expressed in power/unit mass and k is a constant for each particle size. Experimental grinding studies were made by Bowdish2 to extend the previous work of Roberts. The work of Bowdish also showed that the rate of breaking of oversize particles in a ball mill is proportional to the concentration of oversize particles present. He further demonstrated that breaking of oversize particles is proportional to the surface area of the balls used for grinding. Rate equations were presented and it was concluded that grinding could be considered as a first order phenomenon according to the rate equation [2] di which is in accordance with Eq. 1. In Eq. 2, the effect of ball area is included in the constant k,. Other rate equations were reported to show the effect of a change in ball area and removal of fines during grinding. Correlation studies made by Arbiter and BhranY indicate a first-order rate equation for quartz; however, their data showed less than first-order rates existed for some of the other materials evaluated. More recently Kelsall4 has shown that the rate of breakage of any narrow size range of quartz could be described by a first-order rate equation. Several other investigators5-7 have described grinding behavior in terms of rate equations or kinetics. In general, the rate equations have been described for each particle size; however, the interactions between sizes and the overall relationships that exist have not been considered, at least not in the form of solving a group of simultaneous differential equations. Extensive work has been conducted by various investigators using a probabilistic approach which has expanded stein's' earlier work. Selection and breakage matrices are incorporated in the probabilistic model as contrasted with the deterministic method presented here. A batch grinding operation may be considered as an unsteady-state process from the standpoint that the conditions within the mill are a function of time. Therefore, a plot of mass fraction of the i-th size versus time would give a set of curves as shown in Fig. 1. In these curves X , represents the mass fraction of large size material, X2 intermediate size, and X3 small size material. An examination of these curves shows a strong similarity to the curves that would be obtained from a chemical reaction of the type9 A?B?C, [3] where A would be comparable to the largest size material being broken to an intermediate size, 3, and

Thermodynamic data for the stable carbides and oxides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten have been critically eualuuted and are used to determine the stable condensed phases at 1 atm total pressure in each metal-carbon-oxygen system. Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams have been constructed and are used to estimate the minimum temperatures neces.see)*y to oblain these metals by corbolhermic redlrction under reduced pressures. USING recently reported data for the carbides and oxides of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, the stable phases in the Group VI metal-carbon-oxygen systems at specific temperatures and pressures can be determined. The thermodynamically stable regions in each metal-carbon-oxygen system can be completely pictured using a Pourbaix-Ellingham diagram in which the two coordinates are oxygen potential (-RT In Po2) and temperature. Worrell and chipman' have described and constructed such diagrams for the metal-carbon-oxygen systems of vanadium, columbium, and tantalum. Downing2 has used similar diagrams to provide a description of the reactions in submerged arc furnaces. One of the examples which he cited was the Cr-C-O system; however, an improved diagram is presented in this paper using recently obtained data for the carbides of chromium. Although some of the oxides and carbides of the Group VI metals exist over slight ranges of composition,3 all solid phases are represented as stoi-chiometric compounds in the subsequent diagrams. Any error introduced into the calculated equilibria by neglecting the compositional variation of these phases is less than the uncertainty in the thermodynamic data. In a Pourbaix-Ellingham diagram for a three-component system, the phase rule requires that at equilibrium four condensed phases specify a point, three condensed phases determine a line, and two condensed phases define an area. To obtain a well-defined area at high oxygen potentials and teniperatures, the initial carbon to oxygen mole ratio is specified to be more than sufficient to reduce the oxide but not enough to convert all the metal to carbide. Thus, the lowest regions in the subse- quent Pourbaix-Ellingham diagrams represent areas in which the metal and its carbide are the stable condensed phases. Cr-C-O SYSTEM A) Thermodynamic Data. To simplify the subsequent calculations, all thermodynamic data are presented in the form of linear Gibbs-energy-of-formation* equations which were derived for the temperature range 505° to 2000°K and are reasonably accurate over the entire temperature ranges of the diagrams. The thermodynamic data for the compounds occurring in the Cr-C-O system are summarized in Table I. Several volatile chromium oxides have been reported,4 but their influence is negligible in the Cr-C-O system. Thermodynamic data for CO and CO2 were taken from the compilation of Coughlin.5 The only solid chromium oxide sufficiently stable to exist below 1800°K in the Cr-C-O system is Cr2Os.11 The Gibbs-energy-of-formation equation for Cr2O3 was obtained by revising the data tabulated in Coughlin,5 using the heat of formation of ah' and the high-temperature thermal data for chromium.7 In 1953 Richardson8 re-evaluated the original work of Kelley and coworkers,9 who measured the thermodynamic properties of the chromium carbides. However, the high-temperature equilibrium results of Boericke9 yield values for ?G°f of Cr2O3 which are 2 kcal more positive than the accepted data. His results for the chromium carbides are based on the same questionable equilibria. Gleiser10 recently determined the Gibbs energy of formation of Cr3C2 and the equation in Table I was calculated from her data and the thermal data of Kelley and coworkers.9 Thermodynamic data for the Cr7C3 and Cr23C6 carbides were obtained by combining the Cr3C2 data

CURTAILMENT of the mineral industry as a whole undoubtedly will follow world peace, but the output of certain minerals should pursue a course well above the average on any curve of probable output projected beyond the trends exhibited through 1939. Without speculating on industrial conditions in the pending recomversion period, demand for fluorspar should be greater than before the war because of these factors, introduced by or resulting directly from military necessity: (1) Discovery and development of new deposits. (2) Improved technology in benefication. (3) New and expanded uses for fluorspar and its derivatives. The steel industry has been and continues to be the greatest consumer of fluorspar, and it wag largely to meet the wartime needs for steel that the domestic fluorspar industry has been expanded so greatly. Not only were the search for and development of new deposits of this mineral considered esstinal but the marginal nature of some of the,c- domestic deposits made it necessary to improve mineral dressinc and processing techniques to utilize them

The mining, metallurgical, and petroleum industries can be viewed as financial or as social institutions or both. The differences between these two conceptions of their businesses will influence their environmental 'and social actions. During the next 10-20 years western industry will be subject to a drop in the growth of a more highly educated labour force and to the emergence of holistic economics, new national goals, and a new ecological perspective. The profitability of the mining industry may therefore be influenced by the human side of its business to a greater degree. The increasing human, social, and environmental responsibilities can be discharged by improving the miner's equipment; by learning to look at situations through the eyes of all those involved; by developing common 'languages' which governments and the public can understand; and by mediating where feasible on the international scene.

"Titanium is a widely distributed, dark grey metal1ic element found in small quantities in many minerals. It has no important uses." Happily, this early quotation proved to be wrung; titanium has, on the contrary, found a large number of very important uses. The error in the 1926 quotation illustrates the problems associated with forecasting the future development of any metal. 'The paper will nevertheless attempt to estimate what will happen to the European titanium industry over the coming decade with slightly more accuracy. It was not until 1955 that anything other than pilot plant facilities were installed in Europe. In 1955 IMI's plant in England, two plants in Germany, one in France and one in Sweden came into operation. All the companies associated with titanium installed melting furnaces but only IMI Titanium has forging and rolling facilities devoted solely to the production of titanium. The other firms rely on the use of equipment of their parent steel companies for processing the me1 ted titanium ingots.

IN THE early summer of 1917, it became evident that the then existing sources of supply of guns and gun forgings were totally inadequate for the enormous and rapidly growing requirements of the Ordnance Department of the Army, so arrangements were made with sixteen makers of other products to take up the manufacture of guns and gun forgings. Nine of these makers were required to produce their own steel from the raw materials and convert it into rough machined gun forgings; the others finished and assembled these forgings into completed guns. In December, 1914, four of these makers of steel and rough gun forgings were instructed to manufacture the same amount of the 6-in. and 9.5-in. guns and howitzers. It, therefore, seemed practical .and profitable to assemble these makers into a small group, together with the officers of the Ordnance Department, and provide standard 'equipment in each of the four works for the production of these two types of guns. The advantages of this cooperation were immediately manifested, and there commenced an interchange of shop practice and a free discussion of facilities and methods that covered not only the equipment but the manufacturing processes.

C. W. MERRILL*-Mr. Hughes' paper not only is very well presented but is most timely in that it covers a subject of vital interest to the United States. Tin is one of the strategic metals which has not been found here in appreciable quantities. The total United States tin output since the first recorded production over 100 years ago would not supply current consumption for a fortnight. On the consumption side, tin is extremely important in national defense because of its use in tin plate which, in the form of tin cans, makes it possible to feed properly the armies that the United States recruits from its civilian population in emergencies. Moreover, the internal combustion engines so important in powering tanks, planes, and other war machines, require large quantities of tin alloys for bearings and for soldering. These considerations, along with the fact that Malaya, historically, has been the leading source of tin to the United States, make the kind of information that Mr. Hughes has presented so ably, a matter of vital interest.

A draft of a budget of revenue and expenditures for the ensuing calendar year is presented each September to the secretaries of the Founder Societies for the information and comment of their governing bodies. After revision, the budget is adopted, by the incoming Board of Trustees at its meeting in January.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—The characteristics of Professor Home's metallurgical papers are, that he is able, from the mass of confusing evidence on the subject, to make an analysis and present hypothetical and essential principles in concrete form for consideration and discussion. I can appreciate, from the practical side of the subject, the labor of collecting and investigating the data which was essential to prepare the paper. Much of it necessarily came from material of preceding years of manufacture in which time was allowed for chemical reactions of the re-carburizer, and for the elimination of the oxidation-products before teeming the ingots. This practice gave a favorable time-element to free the metal from slag and other impurities— a requisite condition for the production of sound steel in the ingots. But, in allowing them to become cold before they were charged into the furnace, a subsequent time-element entered as a detrimental factor in the development of the pipe or shrinkage-cavities, which gave an ingot-structure deficient in soundness, at least in the upper portion. (The term slag is used in a general rather than in a strictly technical sense.) Traces of manganese sulphide are often associated with manganese silicates in the same thread or seam, and at other places they are separate and distinct. Interpretations from material thus manufactured must be made with due allowances for the methods of fabrication and the requirements of service. The only way we now have to estimate what the degree of soundness of the ingot-structure was, in the early foreign and American manufacture of steel rails, is by examination of the worn and failed material after years of service. We must remember also that the poorest material was long since consigned to the scrap-heap without any full record of its history. The rails from a given ingot cannot now be identified ; and in many

PYRITE, the bisulphide of iron, FeS2, is found more or less in all coal-beds: but, as a rule, in certain definite forms. More than any other impurity, it detracts from the commercial value of a coal-deposit, and yet its presence is so universal that it might almost be said that there is no coal entirely free from pyrite. My observation has been confined to the Pennsylvania bituminous and semi-bituminous coals, and to them, therefore, my remarks will be confined. Certain generalizations which I may make, however, will be found of universsl application. The lowest members of the coal-formation, No. XIII. of the Pennsylvania bituminous region, are nearly always pyritiferous, and in many cases highly so. In Cambria county, for instance, coalbed A, the Brookville, is locally known as the " Sulphur seam." The Lower Kittanning, in parts of Clearfield county, is so sulphury as to be almost unmarketable, though otherwise it is a strong locomohive coal. In Mercer county the Pardoe bed, so extensively mined there, carries great quantities of sulphur in the form of pyrite, though usually this can be separated in such a way as to detract little from the market-value of the coal. Another increase in production and the discovery of new pools arc the outstanding developments of the year 1937. Production in 1937 totaled 16,354,706 bbl., compared to 15,457,953 bbl. in the previous year, an increase of 5.8 per cent, of which 5 per cent was due to the Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales (Argentine Governnlent Oil Fields) and 0.8 per cent t,o private companies. Table I shows that the most important gain in output was obtained in zone B of Comodoro Rivadavia, partly offset by a 5.7 per cent decrease in the Neuqu6n district. The fields of Salta and Mendoza show an increase of 4.4 and 39.1 per cent, respectively. The section of the Northwestern United States that includes the northern Rocky Mountains and adjacent areas to the west and east is one of large mineral production and important mineral potential. The metallic ore deposits vary widely in age and type and their geologic settings are similarly diverse. A brief resume of the region's physiographic characteristics and geology sets the framework for the selected ore districts that are described in following papers and makes it possible to place these ore deposits in their proper reference to space and time.

IT is very difficult to arrive at exact figures for the cost of maintaining excess capacity of coal mines, but we can approximate the various items. To do this, I will take the Pittsburgh district of Pennsylvania and the other districts can be compared to this one. I believe we can take the depreciation item of plant ac- count as a whole and discount it over a period of 20 years; while this is high for some items it is low for others and I believe it is not far from a safe basis. This equals 5 per cent per year, and this depreciation will take place about as rapidly when not in use as when in operation. A fair value in the Pittsburgh district to- day for plant and houses is close to $4 per ton per annum. At 5 per cent this will equal 20 cents per ton per year. The item of keeping the mine in condition, free from water, etc., will be close to an average of 2y2 cents per ton per annum.

THE activity and enthusiasm of pioneers still prevail among workers in applied geophysics1.- Within the year, new devices have .been tried out, instruments and technique have been improved and the methods of application to commercial problems have been increased in many ingenious ways. There is still great need for more skillful interpretation of results in terms of geology, but oil the whole geophysical prospecting is making encouraging progress toward finding its proper place and function in engineering and geological practice. Spectacular successes continue to be reported, particularly .from the Gulf Coast, where the race for salt domes has not slackened, and encouraging results have been giined elsewhere in the mapping of structures in the search for oil. In the mining field, however, it can hardly be claimed that the same measure of success has been obtained, for brilliant efforts worthy of wide recognition have been overshadowed to some eatent by the unfortunate outcome of surveys undertaken unwisely without recognition of the limitations of the work. Consequently, hopes were aroused that could not be fulfilled, and it must be admitted in an impartial survey that there are a few regions, chiefly in the far north, where the standing of geophysical prospecting is somewhat doubtful and where the course of public opinion regarding it shows a certain similarity to the history of the market during the past few months. Reliable work, however, is steadily going 011 and it can confidently be expected that the methods will eventually be regarded in many regions as an essential part of the technique of securing geologic data needed for intelligent exploration.
