The binary alloy system Mo-C zoas investigated by means of X-ray, metallog/aphic, thermoanalytical, and melting-point techniques on chemically analyzed specimens. The system, Fig. 39, is characterized by three congruently melting, intermediate phases, Mo2C, n MoCi-x, and aMoC1-,, of which only Mo,C is stable at temperatures below 1650°C. Substoichio-metrzc (~32.5 at. pct C) dimolybdenum carbide undergoes a homogeneous sublattice order-disorder transformation at temperatures of approximately 1400°C, whereas hyperstoichiorrletric compositions undergo a discontinuous Phase change. The order-disorder transitions in the Me, C phases are discussed in terms of the structural changes involved in the transformation processes and the absence of long-range sublattice coherency in stoichiometric or hyperstoiclziomet-ric compositions attributed to the impossibility of obtaining long-range order in a linear chain of alternating carbon atoms and vacancies. From the experimental phase relutionships and the known thermody-namic data for Mo2 C, limits for the free energies of formation for the high-temperature phases r) MoC1-, and aMoC1-, are deriued and found to be in good agreement with data previously obtained from phase equilibria in ternary metal-carbon systems. Many of the difficult operating problems of the preparation of coal for market, of sampling coal shipments and in the utilization of coal are caused by segregation in the coal mass. Segregation may be of two kinds: i.e., "size segregation," in which particles of the same size in a mass of coal containing a range of sizes collect together and "density segregation," in which particles of the same density or specific gravity in a mass of particles of varying density gather together. Mechanics of Segregation Size segregation cannot take place with closely sized coal. As the size range increases, the tendency for size segregation increases. IN 1880, the late James Douglas, LL.D., was superintendent of the Chemical Copper Co., operating the Hunt & Douglas process for the treatment of the siliceous copper ores of the Jones mine at Phoenixville, Pa. In conjunction with this a refining furnace was operated. After correspondence with Ben Williams, of Bisbee Ariz., who was commencing the mining and smelting of the Copper Queen ore. Dr. Douglas decided-to make his first journey to Arizona. While making plans for the trip lie visited a friend in Philadelphia, a .Mr. Logan, a prominent lawyer. He, through Professor Treadwell, brother of the discoverer of the great Treadwell gold mine of Douglas Island, Alaska, had an option with his min¬ing partner, Mr. Lenig, on the Eureka and Wade Hampton claims near the headwaters of the Verde River in Yavapai County, Arizona. These two claims, later the source of practically all of the wealth of the Jerome district, were then owned by C. P. Head and Co. Prescott merchants. Hugo Richards, banker, and formerly sutler at Camp Apache; Rod and John McKinnon prospectors and Nova Scotians; and perhaps one or two 'other owners of minor interests. Mr. Logan, hearing of Dr. Douglas intended trip to Bisbee, asked him to go first to see the two mining prospects, and this, Douglas, in need of the $500 fee, agreed to do as the time on the option on the claims was running short.

THE solidus line above the solid solution field in the lead-antimony system was originally determined by Dean and his associates1 from heating curves. They did not regard this line as having been accurately fixed and in their more recent publications2 the curves drawn do not follow closely the original data. The precise location of the solidus line is of importance in the extrusion of lead-antimony cable sheath, as the temperature of the metal in this process must be less than the lowest temperature at which any part of the alloy in the lead-press charge becomes liquid. It is very desirable, however, to operate at as high a temperature as possible, as the rate of extrusion for a given pressure is approximately doubled for an increase of 10° C. in temperature. The precise location of this line is also important, in the investigation of ternary systems of lead, antimony and a third metal. For these reasons, and because of the differences reported in the literature, data were secured on the lead-antimony solidus line by the classical quenching-test procedure.

In the investigation reported here, calorimetric measurements have been made to determine the heat of formation of the compound AuSb2 and the partial gram-atomic enthalpies of antimony and gold in dilute solution in liquid tin and their enthalpy interaction coefficients. In order to interpret the behavior of antimony and gold in dilute solution in tin, nonzero values are assigned to the energies of bonds between like solute atoms relative to the pure solute state. Sa.mples of the compound AuSb2 were prepared by melting stoichiometric amounts of antimony and gold (99.999 pct pure) in evacuated and sealed Vycor tubes, which were shaken vigorously and quenched in water. The ingots were annealed in evacuated and sealed tubes at approximately 700°K for 2 weeks. Metallo-graphic and X-ray examinations gave no indication of second phases or microsegregation. The samples were added from 273°K to tin-rich solutions in a solution calorimeter1 maintained at 623°K. The calorimeter was calibrated with tin; the heat content of tin, H623°K- H273°K, was taken as 4.08 kcal per g-atom.2 In each calorimetric run at least four additions were made. The total concentration of solutes in the bath at the end of any run did not exceed 1 at. pct. The measured heat effect of an addition was plotted against the average of the atom fractions x of Sb + Au in solution before and after that addition. From this plot the heat effect at infinite dilution h,,, and the composition dependence of the heat effect dh/dx in the composition range 0 < x < 0.01 were obtained. The results for the additions of antimony, mixtures of antimony and gold, and the compound AuSb2 are listed in Table I. The heat effect h on addition of a sample of the compound AuSb2 or a mechanical mixture of antimony and gold at 273°K to a tin-rich solution at 623°K can be expressed as:

PART I SUMMARY CERTAIN relations between the formation of ore deposits and other geological processes are pretty generally accepted, namely: that many ore deposits are closely associated with igneous activity; that ore deposits accompany certain types of intrusive bodies, notably batholiths and stocks, and that they are concentrated near the tops of such bodies; that igneous activity occurs in belts of strong folding and faulting; that folding and faulting are greatest in basins of extensive sedimentation and least in areas of erosion or slight sedimentation; that areas of erosion or slight sedimentation and of heavy sedimentation persist over long periods and exert a major control over structure, igneous activity, and ore deposition; that cycles of erosion, deposition, folding and faulting, igneous activity, and ore deposition, have been repeated through geologic time resulting in rather definite periods in which metal deposits have formed. In short, ore deposition is but one phase of a series of closely related geological events. It is attempted in this chapter to point out the relations of these interreacting geologic processes to the distribution of ore deposits in the western United States. Three great periods of mineralization are recognized; pre-Cambrian, post-Jurassic, and late Cretaceous-Tertiary. In distribution the deposits of the three periods, with certain exceptions, show a concentration about two large positive areas, the Colorado plateau and the Columbia plateau, which suggests a causal relation. The most general age divisions of the rocks of the Cordilleran region of the United States are (1) pre-Cambrian, and (2) Cambrian and later rocks. The pre-Cambrian rocks are exposed mainly through the Rocky Mountain belt from the Canadian boundary southward to Arizona and westward through Arizona to southern California. They have commonly

The rate of self-diffusion in silver single crystals during torsional strain was measured over a wide range of tenperatures and strain rates. The torsional strain was applied in a cyclic manner by reversing the divection of twist aftev a certain fraction of the total strain was reached. Surface roughening was substantially reduced in cyclically strained specimens compared with those strained entirely in one direction. Diffusion coefficients were determined using a special sectioning technique whereby slices could be removed parallel to the surface of a strained torsion specimen. The accuracy of the technique was first determined using roughened specinzens statically diffused to various penetration depths. Simultaneous strain-diffusion experiments were then performed over the temperature range 550&apos; to 800 using strain rates of lo-&apos; to 2.2 x 10&apos; sec-&apos;. The increase in silver self-diffusivity during torsional plastic strain was small. In only one case was the enhancement greater than twice the static value of the diffusion coefficzent. The enhancements increased slightly with decreasing tenzperature and increased with increasing strain rate. A dislocation pipe mechanism of enhancement was found to explain the present results satisfactorily. The magnitude of the enhancements and the tenzperatures at which they were observed suggests that a steady-state dislocation density of 10&apos; to 109 dislocations cm-2 existed during the high-tempevature deformation. The diffusion coefficient in an fcc metal can be increased by 1) an excess concentration of point defects and 2) the rapid movement of diffusing atoms along grain boundaries and dislocations. Plastic deformation may be responsible for enhancements by both of these mechanisms. The results of simultaneous strain-diffusion experiments have caused a controversy over the magnitude of the effect of strain upon diffusion. Experiments reporting large enhancements have been criticized for the manner in which the diffusion coefficient was measured. Several of these experiments have been contradicted by other results obtained in a similar manner. No enhancement was reported by two investigators&apos;&apos;&apos; who performed their experiments at high temperatures where strain is expected to have little effect upon diffusion. A recent theoretical analysis3 indicates that strain enhancement by a vacancy mechanism will be small and exist only at low temperatures and rapid strain rates. It is doubtful whether any experiment has yet proven that strain enhancements can occur by an excess vacancy mechanism. In the present research, experiments were performed at extremes of temperature and strain rate in an attempt to measure enhancement of diffusion by strain. Self-diffusion of silver during torsional deformation was chosen since two separate investigations4j5 indicate that at least a small enhancement exists under these conditions. An accurate method of determining the diffusion coefficient, mechanical sectioning, was employed after a technique was devised to apply it to the roughened surface of a strained torsion specimen. First, the accuracy of the technique was determined for different penetrations (2fi). Then diffusion experiments were performed at temperatures between 550" and 800°C at strain rates of 10"" to 10"" per sec. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Preparation of Specimens. The experimental procedure detailing the growth of crystals, their treatment, and the annealing techniques during straining are contained in earlier publications.496 The dimensions and orientations of the torsion specimens are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. licatiin of Torsional Strain. The torsion procedure was changed from that used previously. The specimens were strained in cycles to reduce the gross distortion and surface roughening inherent in twisting to high strains in one direction. For all strains above 0.30, the total surface strain was obtained as follows: the specimen was twisted to 0.10 strain in a clockwise direction; the direction was reversed; the backlash in the torsion apparatus was taken up; and the specimen was twisted in a counterclockwise direction through the initial starting point to 0.20 surface shear strain in the opposite direction. The strain reversal took no more than 1 min to accomplish. The total accumulated surface shear strain was arbitrarily taken as the sum of the 0.10 strain in the clockwise direction plus 0.20 in the counterclockwise direction. Although cyclic torsional strain was beneficial, surface roughening and specimen distortion were not entirely eliminated. The variation in the diameter at various points on the specimen was often much greater than the depth of the diffusion zone. Since serious errors might result if specimens were sectioned in the usual manner, a technique of lathe sectioning was devised to allow sections to be taken parallel to planes of equal concentration.

Wollastonite in Essex County, New York, occurs as a typical contact mineral in a series of rocks metamorphosed by anorthosite. Sole current use is in various types of electric welding fluxes. Its uniform lathlike shape suggests its use as a specialized filler. Introduction Wollastonite (CaSiO3) was first noted in the vicinity of Willsboro, Essex County, New York, about 1810 by Dr. William Meade, and described from the same locality in 1821 by Lardner Vanuxem.&apos; Recent exploration and development indicate that the deposit is of adequate size for continued exploitation on a larger scale than the present operations. The only other known occurrence of like magnitude in this country is in Kern County, California.* Wollastonite has been reported from Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Lewis County, New York, but these are little more than mineral localities. Geology The Essex County wollastonite has been found outcropping at numerous separate localities in a belt of contact metamorphosed sediments, 1/4 mile wide, which begins 2 miles southwest of the village of Willsboro and trends N. 70" W. for approximately 6 miles (Fig. I). In this belt, the pre-Cambrian Grenville has been injected and partially replaced by the more liquid portions of an anorthositic magma. Bud-dington and Whitcomb3 have described the rock in this contact metamorphosed belt as "Mixed gneisses: Grenville mafic, pyroxenic and garnetiferous gneisses and skarns* with local nearly uniform garnet or pyroxene layers and with gabbroic anorthosite sheets. A few limestone layers." These rocks are underlain, presumably at no great depth, by gabbroic anorthosite gneiss, the typical Whiteface border facies of the Adirondack anorthosite massif. The occurrence of wollastonite in large quantities was discovered during the quarrying of the garnet-rich layer that overlies the wollastonite at one opening. Further prospecting revealed its presence elsewhere in the belt, overlain in most places by the garnet. Accurate tracing of the wollastonite is difficult, owing to the glacial cover and to the fact that the weathered surface of the mineral has a dark, dirty brown color, and that the wollastonite itself has been dissolved more or less completely along the outcrops. It has, however, been noted at 10 localities within the skarn belt in the first 2 1/2 miles from its southeastern end. It has not been found in the northern half of the belt and therefore may be limited to the southern half. At the Fox Hill quarry, which is the main opening, 150 ft. have been exposed, showing an aggregate thickness of 30 to 35 it. Of

With the aid of the splat-cooling technique of rapid quenching, metastable alloy phases based on antimony ad bismuth have been prepared. At room temperature, simple cubic phases were found in the Sb + Au, 56 + Yd, and Sb + Ni systems. Another phase was retained in the Au-Bi system at -190°C; in this systent, a microcrystalline phase and a rhombohedrally distorted phase were also observed. The crystal chemistry of these phases is discussed in terms of their valence electron concentration range. A remarkable five-step Phase sequence was found upon heating and equilibration of certain metastable Au-Bi alloys. USING the splat- cooling technique of rapid quenching from the liquid,&apos; a large number of metastable intermediate alloy phases have been prepared in recent years. Thus, Hume-Rothery phases of the hexagonal type based on the valence electron concentration have been produced in systems where they are missing in equilibrium, e.g., Ag-Ge 1 or AU-Sb. 3 In a comprehensive study of metastable alloys based on tin, simple hexagonal metastable y phases were found, raising the total of stable and metastable y phases from 3 to 13. 4 In the In-Bi system, five new metastable intermediate phases were retained.&apos; In most cases, the new metastable phases have some crystal chemical characteristics in common: a) They have rather simple, elementlike structures with few atoms per unit cell, e.g., y phase,4&apos;5 or the metastable primitive cubic phases in the Ag-Te and and Au-Te systems.= b) Their structures are often related to those of the terminal phases, or to elements that are straddled in their position in the periodic table by the constituent elements; this is the case for metastable ß (In-Bi) with the structure of white ß Sn,&apos; or metastable a (Cd-sn). 4 c) They seem to represent the crystal structures appropriate to certain average group number (AGN) ranges in which no or few single-phase structures exist in equilibrium. These average group number ranges can probably be equated in the case of many elements of the Ba(Zn)-Bs(As) groups with the averaged valence electron concentration. In the present work, the splat-cooling technique has been applied to the alloys of antimony and bismuth. In equilibrium, neither element forms intermediate alloy phases with other B elements from groups Bl(Cu) to B4(Si) that contain more than 66.7 at. pct of Sb or Bi, respectively, e.g., AUSb 2. 7 Thus, antimony- or bismuth-rich phases, which might be closely related to antimony or bismuth, and which would reflect struc- tural changes occurring on alloying with small amounts of addition elements, do not exist. Also, the terminal solubility of antimony and bismuth for all B metals is very small. It was therefore of interest to investigate the influence of enforced, nonequilibrium solid solution of addition elements in antimony and bismuth on their crystal structures. It was found that additions of group B 2-B4 metals act distinctly differently than additions of group T 10 and B1 metals. The latter set of additives will be treated here. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Alloy preparation and splat-quenching followed closely the procedures described in Refs. 1, 4, and 5; they consisted of the preparation of master alloys from high-purity starting materials (99.99+ pct) and blast-atomizing of 20-mg quantities onto copper sheets. The resulting approximately 1 to 5 u thick foils were investigated by X-ray diffraction. The cooling rates obtained are of the order of 107 to 10 8 C per set,&apos;" causing solidification to proceed at a rat; of approximately 100 cm per sec.&apos; Powder patterns of the resulting fine-crystalline materials were taken with filtered CuK, radiation. For antimony alloys the substrates were held at room temperature and for bismuth alloys at -190°C both during splat foil deposition and X-ray investigation. Annealing treatments at several

In a special type of electrodiffusion experiment the entire specimen is at constant temperature. The vacancies are then created at one end of the specimen and flow to the other end where they are destroyed. The energy required to operate the corresponding sources and sinks results in a super saturation of vacancies at one end of the specimen and an under -saturation at the other end. This gradient in vacancy concentration produces a chemical-diffusion flux, J(D), of vacancies in addition to the flux, J(E), caused by the electric current. Using the experimental data of Ch. Herzig,5 it is shown that a super saturation of 1 pct can cause J(D) to be about 25 pct of J(E), and thus account for the anomalous behavior of short specimens. THERE are advantages in a phenomenological treatment as contrasted to an atomistic one. For example, there are many reactions involving the element copper that are quantitatively and usefully understood from a phenomenological viewpoint, even though electron theory is not yet able to predict whether copper should be fcc or cph.&apos; Similarly, the lack of a complete atomic theory of vacancies need not prevent the development of a treatment based on thermodynamics and chemical kinetics. In the following discussion, models will be used for the vacancies and for the mechanisms by which they move or are created or destroyed, but the phenomenological treatments are not dependent on the details of these models. The important product of a phenomenological analysis is an equation that describes the relation among the measurable quantities determining the behavior of the system. Based on such an equation, experiments can be performed to study these quantities in detail. Eventually atomic theory will supply an adequate theoretical base for the phenomena in question. A chemical species whose chemical potential was invariant during reactions in binary and ternary systems of varying composition would indeed be an anomaly. Yet this is the role that has frequently been assigned to the vacancies in pure metals, in dilute solutions, and even in ordinary alloys. The weight of available evidence supports the view that supersatu-rations of vacancies are on the order of 1 pct in usual diffusion processes.&apos; Although it may seem strange that such a small deviation from equilibrium could significantly affect the thermodynamic properties of the vacancies, it is well known that the driving force for an ordinary chemical reaction is the departure of the components from their equilibrium state. Similarly, the reaction of vacancies that results in the formation of pores in various types of diffusion3 can reasonably be attributed to the supersaturation of vacancies. In the present paper, it will be shown that small degrees of supersaturation can significantly affect the kinetics of the diffusion process itself. ISOTHERMAL ELECTRODIFFUSION Two different experimental techniques are convenient for studying the behavior of vacancies in a pure metal in the presence of an electric field. Gilder and Lazarus4 studied self-electrodiffusion in a gold specimen in which only the central portion was at high temperatures. In this case the significant vacancy sources operate inside the specimen in the presence of a temperature gradient. In the laboratory of Th. Heumann a method has been devised for studying self-electrodiffusion at constant temperature.5 In principle, there is then no effect of thermodiffusion. The correlation of property changes during precipitation with structure has progressed, sometimes rapidly but other times more slowly, since the fundamental discovery of Merica, waltenberg and Scott.1 The predominent factor that hampered the progress has been limitations imposed by the various detection methods. Refiments in x ray diffraction tech-niques and in metallographic methods, which have been extended by the electron microscope, have contributed new information within the last few years. These permit an extension of the theory as proposed by Mehl and Jetter in 1940&apos;2 Now that a sufficient number of alloys has been investigated to establish a general mechanism of the precipitation process, a correlation of the facts into a generally applicable theory of age-hardening is both warranted and desirable. The purpose of the paper is to provide an orderly correlation of the phenomenological facts of precipitation hardening. Speculation 011 mechanism of hardening will be confined to that consistent with existing theories of hardening, Age-hardening accompanies the formation of a new structure, the precipitate, as provided by a11 alloy system ill which solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature. Upon this premise alone all such systems would be expected to include age-hardenable alloys. Alas, this is not always the case. Few attempts have been made to explain the variable degree of age-hardening among different alloys or to explain the influence of small alloying additions upon the hardening. Dispersion hardening as originally postulated3 is not adequate.* Coherency hardening—the term that will be used to distinguish the properties of a two-phase mixture in the unique and unstable transition state at which the phases are strained into precise atomic registry (continuity or coherency) in planes

The area covered by this paper is the same as that covered in 1944. Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming are included in the discussion and statistics, and brief mention is made of activities in the adjoining states, except Nebraska and New Mexico, which are considered separately (see pp. 187-189). The other adjoining states, North and South Dakota, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, have had virtually no oil or gas production, except in the gas field of Cedar Creek. Montana, which extends into North Dakota; the Pierre field in South Dakota, where gas is produced and separated in gas-water wells, and the abandoned Payette area in western Idaho. Seven gas wells were drilled in North Dakota, but no wildcatting was reported. Several unsuccessful wildcats were drilled in South Dakota, and some were continuing at the end of the year. Activity in Idaho and Nevada was negligible.

External quantum efficiency measurements at 300" and 77°K are presented for vapor-grown GaAs and GaAs1-xPx electroluminescent diodes as a function of junction depth and doping. In GaAs, external efficiencies are found to decrease exponentially with increasing junction depth, defining an average absorption coefficient of 900 cm-1 at 300°K and 350 cm-1 at 77°Kfor epitaxial layers of p-type GaAs. It is shown that photon absorption losses dominate at room temperature and, in fact, account for most of the external efficiency degradation between 77° and 300°K. Healever, the internal (&apos;junction) quantum efficiency is also found to decrease by a factor of 3.5 between 77" ALTHOUGH rapid progress has been made in recent years with GaAs, Gap, and their alloys for use in electroluminescent diodes, there are still important unknown factors related to the performance of these de- and 300°K. The dependence of GaAs efficiencies on donor and acceptor concentrations is presented, illustrating best efficiencies at donor concentrations of 1.5 to 2x 1018 cm-3 . External efficiencies are found to be independent of acceptor concentrations less than 3 x 1019 cm-3 but to degrade at higher doping. The fabrication of GaAsi-xPx electroluminescent diodes is briefly discussed. External efficiencies here for planar uncoated diodes are about 0.035 pct at 300°K and 0.4 pct at 77°for x = 0.42. A brightness of about 8500 ft-Lamberts is attained at 77°K and of 315 ft-Lamberts at 300° K. for curvent densities of 10 amp per sq cm. vices. For example, although the external efficiency is known to decrease by factors of typically 10 to 30 between 77°K and room temperature, the exact causes of this are still uncertain. Experimental results of ill&apos; and carr2 with zinc-diffused electroluminescent diodes suggest that this external degradation is almost entirely due to increased absorption losses at room temperature, with a relatively temperature-independent internal efficiency; recent calculations by Gonda et al.3 corroborate this hypothesis. In contrast, Pilkuhn and Rupprecht4 find the internal efficiency of solution-grown GaAs laser diodes to degrade from 100 to 66 to 40 pct as the temperature is increased from

This paper is a review of Montana reverberatory smelting practice covering a period of approximately fifty years, during which time the small furnaces that had been in use elsewhere for a century or more, without much change in size or method of operation, were revolutionized and were developed into the huge, continuously operating furnaces of today. A study of Montana practice is particularly instructive, since reverberatory furnace smelting for the production of copper matte received more attention there than in other smelting centers and many of the improvements that finally resulted in establishing the preeminence of this type of furnace over the blast furnace originated in Butte and Anaconda. The material in this paper was gathered from original sources, wherever possible, and all of the illustrations were made from original drawings, some of which have been simplified and worked over so as to be better adapted for reproduction. The aim has been to trace the modifications in design and operation which took place during the period in question—the reasons for the changes and the results achieved through them. For developments during the first twenty years, the technical literature of the period was freely drawn upon, but I am particularly indebted to W. M. Kelly, general foreman at the Anaconda Works, whose recollections and personal experience extend back to the early days. I wish to acknowledge the use made of publications of E. P. Mathewson, William Wraith and L. V. Bender, as well as information obtained here and there from friends and associates. The resume of Great Falls practice was compiled from correspondence, notes and drawings found in the files of the old Boston & Montana Co. and the tabulations showing the performance of furnaces at Butte and Anaconda are adapted from plant records and correspondence in the files of the Anaconda Copper Mining Company. The paper deals with some interesting comparisons that were made between furnaces operated under various conditions in connection with the Carson Case, and results obtained when using natural gas as fuel. This part of the paper may be considered original to the extent that these results have not previously been published.
