The mineralogy of the Avalon Nechalacho deposit is complex with significant fractions of HREEs, Zr, and Nb found in refractory minerals such as zircon and fergusonite. Sulphuric acid baking followed by water leaching can be used to extract REEs from flotation concentrates, but acid baking does not completely "crack" the zircon and fergusonite, so the extractions of Zr, Nb, and HREEs are not high. An alternative flowsheet has been developed that is able to obtain significantly improved extractions of HREEs, Zr, and Nb from flotation concentrates or acid bake residues. This is accomplished by cracking the zircon and fergusonite minerals with caustic soda at high temperatures, followed by water washing to recover excess caustic soda and soluble sodium silicates and phosphates. REEs, Zr, and Nb in the solid residue can then be solubilized with HCl or H2SO4. This paper highlights some of the findings from an extensive laboratory program and discusses several flowsheet implications.

THERE has been considerable controversy regarding the structure and mineral constituents produced when iron ore is sintered. This investigation was undertaken in order to establish the fundamental reactions that take place in the sintering process by determining the nature of the resulting minerals. The writer's immediate interest in the subject arose mainly from the request of E. W. Davis for information based on a microscopic study of sinter submitted by him in May, 1926. In the author's preliminary work, samples of iron-ore sinter were secured from the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station and from commercial plants. These were polished by the usual methods for polishing opaque ores. In order to study these surfaces satisfactorily, it is necessary to magnify them rather highly, a range from 100 to 1000 dia. being used. For the higher magnifications oil-immersion lenses and an intense source of light are necessary. After the preliminary study had shown the problems involved, a series of small samples were sintered under carefully controlled conditions and with analyzed materials. Variations in the relative amounts of ore, coal and water were made in order to study the effect of each constituent. The attempt has been to arrive at a clearer understanding of the sintering process and the reactions involved without reference to any preconceived notion as to sinter. It is clear that the study of polished surfaces has yielded results not possible with thin sections alone. The thin sections made in this work were found unsatisfactory at magnification greater than 75, whereas magnifications of 1000 were easily studied with reflected light on carefully polished surfaces. A rather complete statement of observed facts is made so that the reader may form his own conclusions. The writer's interpretations are suggested.

It is often necessary for a mining company to extract coal from a seam underlying a previously mined coal seam. The impact of the overlying mine workings on the stress distribution within the underlying mine workings is very difficult to assess without the use of numerical modeling techniques. This paper demonstrates the usefulness of applying numerical modeling to evaluate alternate startup-room locations for a longwall panel considering the effects of multiple seam interaction. MULSIMIPC, a code adapted by the former U. S. Bureau of Mines, was used to compare stress patterns in two proposed startup-room locations. These model results were not only compared to each other, but also to results from a model with no overlying mine workings to provide baseline criteria for evaluation of the two proposed startup-room locations. The numerical modeling study was successful in providing useful information to the coal company and the regulatory agency (MSHA), resulting in a mine design that was both safe and efficient, and prevented the sterilization of a large volume of coal reserves.

Buoyed primarily by growing consumer spending, the economy rebounded from a weak second quarter. According to preliminary estimates released by the Department of Commerce, real gross national product (GNP) grew $2 1.9 billion during the third quarter, producing a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 2.4%, compared with a rate of 0.6% in the second quarter of 1986 and 4.1% for the third quarter of 1985 (table 1). Third-quarter real personal consumption expenditures and Government purchases of goods and services rose $42 billion and $7 billion, respectively, but those gains were partially offset by the continuing decline of gross private domestic investment, off $16 billion, and the growing trade deficit, up $11 billion. Three quarters of the growth in consumer spending occurred in the durable goods sector as consumers responded to discounted financing offered by automobile manufacturers attempting to lower inventories of 1986 vehicles, Increased purchases of other durable goods, such as furniture and home furnishings, also contributed to the strength of the durable goods sector. The success of the automobile inventory reduction program as well as weak factory output led to a $20 billion decline in inventory growth. Investment for housing and producers' durable equipment expanded, however, and mitigated some of the impact of slower inventory depending on gross private domestic investment, Capital spending for nonresidential structures declined for the third consecutive quarter. The declining capital spending and the growing trade deficit continued to be significant and interrelated problems for the economy. Real capital spending for new plants and equipment during 1986 is expected to decline 2.5% after rising 8.7% in 1985 and 15.8% in 1984 (table 2). It is likely that capital expenditures bottomed out in the second quarter and that they will expand in the third and fourth quarters. The first-half decline was partially attributed to uncertainty arising from the pending tax- overhaul bill. Furthermore, there is little impetus for corporations to invest in new capacity since factories are operating at less than 80% of capacity (table 3) largely because of the continuing growth of imports. The growth rate of the trade deficit dropped sharply in the third quarter to less than half that of the previous quarter. Low oil prices, declining auto- mobile and steel imports, and increased exports of agricultural goods contributed to this decline. The continued low growth of the economy caused the Federal Reserve System to reduce the discount rate for the fourth time this year (in late August), drop ping it to 5,596, the lowest level in about 9 years. Inflation, as measured by the fixed- weighted GNP price Index, continues to remain low, but rose from the revised second-quarter level of 1.7% to 2.596, mostly because of rising food costs.

The mine of the Porter Coal Co. is located at the town of Porter in the northwestern part of Jefferson, County, Ala., about 20 miles west of Birmingham. The operations in this mine are confined to the middle and bottom benches of the Mary Lee bed. The coal from the Porter mine is handpicked and washed before being placed on the market. The handpicked lump coal and the washed egg and nut, coal are sold chiefly as domestic and steam-raising fuel. The coal finer than 1 inch is washed in 2-compartment jigs and utilized in the manufacture of metallurgical coke. The coal company has found that, when coal ranging in size from 1 to 0 inch is washed in jigs, a considerable amount of high-ash material finer than 3/16 inch remains in the washed coal. This paper gives the results of an investigation which was conducted for the purpose of determining the washing characteristics of the through 316-inch raw coal and the extent to which the ash might be reduced by means of coal-washing tables. This investigation has been made in connection with an. extensive study of the coal-washing problems now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal-mining companies of the State.

At the Prospectors and Developers Annual Convention (PDAC) in Toronto, Canada mining and exploration companies of all sizes were on hand to discuss the year that was and those that will be. The following is a look at some of the companies with Canadian operations that were on hand for PDAC 2009. Iamgold Corporation is a leading mid-tier gold mining company producing approximately 31 t (1 million oz) of gold from seven mines on three continents. With record revenues of $870 million ? up 28 percent when compared to 2007 ? the company is focused on growth with a target to reach 56 t (1.8 million oz) gold production by 2012. During 2008, the company acquired the Essakane project in West Africa. The project is fully permitted, under construction and will contribute more than 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of lower cost production by late 2008. Iamgold increased its reserves by 55 percent, to 385 t (12.4 million oz) and its resources in-creased by 16 percent to 821 t (26.4 million oz) in 2008. Going forward, Iamgold has three areas of focus ? West Africa, Guyana Shield and Quebec ? with seven gold operations, five advanced projects and the Niobec niobium mine included. The Rosebel Mine in Suriname is Iamgold?s fl agship property. With measured and indicated resources of 300 t (9.6 million oz), it accounts for 30 percent of Iamgold?s production. Production there was up 20 percent compared with 2007 and further production increases are expected in 2009 and 2010. Mill expansion and optimization increased throughput from 8.9 Mt/a (9.8 million st) to 10 Mt/a (11 million stpy). In West Africa, Iamgold has joint ventures at Sadiola in Mali; Tarkwa in Ghana; Yatela in Mali and Daman in Ghana. Iamgold also has 100 percent ownership of the Mupane gold mine in Botswana and the Doyon gold mine in Quebec, Canada. Also in Quebec, Iamgold has 100 per-cent ownership of the Niobec niobium mine in Quebec. Niobium is used in high strength specialty steels.

The author discusses the promising future of the use of pipelines for transportation of ore slurries over long distances, citing existing installations. Various criteria and factors affecting the use and size of pipelines are considered. Among the factors influencing the use of pipelines are particle size, specific gravity, abrasiveness, minimum velocities, and pumping considerations. Long-distance transportation of solids by hydraulic pipelines holds the promise of great economic benefits. Today within the confines of most mineral processing plants, the moving of solids about in slurry form by pipeline is commonplace, since the method offers great advantages when conditions are suitable. Yet, this method is surprisingly slow in being adopted on a broad scale for transportation of solids over long distances (arbitrarily the term will be applied to one over five miles long). This is especially surprising in view of the successful realization in this country within the last five years of two daring ventures in long-distance solids pipelines. A 72-mile long, 6-in. diam pipeline of the American Gilsonite Co. has been satisfactorily transporting 700 tpd of gilsonite from the mine at Bonanza, Utah, to the processing plant at Grand Junction, Colo., since April 1957. The 108-mile long 10-in. diam pipeline of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. has been transporting about 4000 tpd of finely crushed coal from the mine at Cadiz, Ohio, to the Eastlake power plant of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. on Lake Erie since January 1958. However, besides two projects in the operations of The Anaconda Co. there have been hardly any other significant solids pipeline developments in the minerals industry during the last three years. The two projects are the 14-mile long, 6-in. diam copper concentrate gravity pipeline at Anaconda's El Salvador project in Chile which has been transporting about 800 tpd since January 1959. The second is a 16-in. diam tailings pipeline at the Anaconda Reduction Works, Anaconda, Mont., designed to transport about 20,000 tpd of deslimed flotation tailings for dam building. This pipeline, which is currently undergoing tryout tests and which will be about seven miles in length, will have a maximum of three 20-in. rubber-lined centrifugal pumps in series at the starting point, each developing a maximum of 100 ft of head, to supplement gravity. It is the writer's opinion that the major reason for the hesitation in considering pipeline operations is confusion due to an inadequate understanding of the basic physical principles affecting the slurry flow process by many engineers in the industry. This in turn begets an attitude of fear and trepidation instead of confidence on the part of many management executives, which leads to a minimizing of the advantages and exaggeration of difficulties when considering the possibility of a long-distance solids pipeline. The promotion of better understanding and consequently the promotion of greater confidence in the potentials of long-distance solids pipelines when conditions are suitable is thus the main purpose of this article. To this end, after considering several examples of the possibilities for solids pipelines in the minerals field, the relative significance of the major factors affecting pulp flow, and some major aspects of slurry pumping will be discussed on a general qualitative level. Then a brief outline of the semi-empirical quantitative methods developed to date for estimating slurry flow behavior will be presented. SOME POSSIBILITIES To give an idea of the magnitude of the possible economic benefits, it should be interesting to mention briefly some of the projects currently under consideration and to suggest some likely future possibilities. At Anaconda's El Salvador Project in Chile (Fig. 1) it is eventually planned to extend the existing 14-mile pipeline by another 60 miles to bring the copper concentrates down to the coast of the Pacific Ocean. This work investigates the effect of waste plastics addition on the reduction of iron oxide by sawdust. Composite pellets of iron oxide containing sawdust (SD), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and blends of SD/HDPE were fired under argon in a horizontal tube furnace at temperatures between 1300 and 1500 °C. Reduced samples were weighed after 10 minutes of reduction and the extent of reduction was calculated from the measured oxygen contents of the compact. The results showed improved extent of reduction when SD was blended with HDPE. The highest extent of reduction was achieved at SD:HDPE ratio of 2:3.

Since the first longwall panel development started in the new mining, (Southern) area, a number of roof falls have occurred in L1 and L2 gate-entries. The longwall was delayed for a total of two months due to roof falls in the gate-entries. To prevent roof falls in future gate-entries, an extensive ground control analysis has been conducted which incorporated regional horizontal stress and panel orientation, tectonic stress, roof strata, surface stream valleys, etc. Results of the analysis indicate that a combination of these factors caused the roof falls. Therefore, a Roof Instability Rating (RIR) system was constructed to predict the roof condition and identify areas where supplemental support should be implemented. The L3 gate-entries, supported by the prediction using the RIR system, have not experienced any roof problems.

These proceedings consist of papers presented at three Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminars on ergonomics in the mining industry. These seminars were held in December 1981, and covered topics relating to ergonomics and mining in the areas of the man-machine interface, and design of the work environment. This area of research is directed toward reducing accidents traditionally associated with human error.

The term "Ichtnyol" is a name applied loosely to certain preparations used in pharmacy. These preparations do not occur as such in nature but are manufactured by various chemical processes. Ichthyol is the name trademarked for a product manyfactured by the Irhthyel-Gescllschaft (Cordes Hermanni & Co.) of Hamburg, Germany, and marketed in thin, country by Merck & Co., Inc., (5, 86, 87)3/. Although used in the literature rather loosely, the correctly applied word refers to the product obtained by sulphonating and then neutralizing with ammonia a distillate from the oil retorted from a certain high-sulphur bituminous shale found near the village of Seefeld in the Austrian Tyrol. Due to the fact that fossils of fish and marine animals occur in the limestone associated with the bituminous shale, these deposits have long been known as, the "lchthyolite schistc of Seefeld" ( 55) . The Greek word "ichthys"" for fish and the Latin word "oleum" for oil are the words from which the term is derived. The crude, tarry shale oil, whose distillate is the raw material for the sulphonation process, has been referred to since the Middle Ages as "Dürsten" or "Tirschen" oil, and the term "ichthyel oil" has been used occasionally in the literature to designate the retorted crude oil (92, 93, 106, 117). The first application of the name "Ichthyol" to a particular product is credited to Schröter (35, 129). Various names for products manufactured by sulphonating bituminous distillates have been coined, and in some of these names the root from the word ichthys has been retained. Some of these names can be found in New and Nonofficial Remedies under the heading, Sulphoichthyolate Preparation, and Substitutes (5).

During the past two years, a large number of creep tests has been carried out on electrolytic lead, special assay lead and ordinary refined (Port Pirie) lead. Some of these tests have already been reported.1§ In addition, an attempt has been made to estimate the influence of the individual elements present in small traces in Port Pirie lead. The present paper gives the results obtained when small additions are made to "U" lead of the composition shown in Table 1.(which has been used throughout these investigations during the past few years). The additions were silver, antimony, bismuth and zinc. The results of the addition of tellurium have already been communicated. This investigation was intended to run parallel with a similar one using electrolytic lead as a basis and adding one element at a time.Actually, the experiments using "U" lead have got rather ahead of the others. The important point has emerged, however, that the effect of a .given addition may be appreciably influenced by the presence of traces of other elements.In most of these tests, an initial stress of 500lb. per sq. in. has been used. Whilst it is fully appreciated that this stress is higher than those used in practice, it has to be borne in mind that an improvement in creep resistance was *Manuscript received December 11th, 1936.

Recycling of rare earth magnet wastes is essential to insure the stable supply of rare earth resources. For the development of a novel recycling process, the removal of rare earth oxide from an off-spec alloy magnet was investigated by melting the alloy magnet at 1503 K together with fluoride flux, LiF-50 mol% NdF3 and LiF-?25 mol% NdF3-25 mol% DyF3. After melting, the separation of magnet alloy from the fluoride flux was achieved, and neither suspension of alloy in the flux nor suspension of flux in the alloy was observed. Oxygen concentration in the alloy decreased from 5000 mass-ppm to 160 mass-ppm by utilizing 1.5 times of equivalent amount of flux needed to completely dissolve the oxide. The investigated process is suitable for mildly contaminated waste such as a used (end-of-life) magnet because of its simplicity, low energy consumption and small limitation on location for operation.

The history of mill liners has evolved over time and this paper tracks the changes and development of liner technology. It provides an overview of the primary types of liners, the design and the materials of construction. The design of a mill liner is driven by application, materials of construction, casting technology and handling issues. The choice of solid steel, grid liners, rubber or composites and magnetic liners is based on many factors.The methods used for monitoring wear and predicting eventual change out time are many and varied. The contribution of discrete element modeling (DEM) analysis in predicting wear profile is discussed.Mill trajectory and DEM software programs are used with great effect to predict the effect of lifter height, face angle, high low lifters or mill speed. In the field, trial and operational experience is used or improvements/design concepts at one operation are applied to another. Broken mill lifters, accentuated wear and other problems can be better understood using hardness testing, chemical analysis and photo micrograph analysis of pearlitic or martensitic structure along with fracture face observations. This forms a part of the typical root cause analysis. However given correct and sound liner and lifter, feed and discharge design media selection, and materials of construction, the majority of premature liner or bolting failure is normally attributed to incorrect operational methods such as excessive high ball to feed ratio, incorrect mill speed relating to lifter ball throw, incorrect media selection, "tramp" material entering the mill charge from upstream or recirculating process and understanding the specific mill operation in question.It is hoped that this paper will benefit mill operators who are faced with challenges of improving wear life and at the same time optimizing mill throughput and performance.CITATION:Connelly, D and Thompson, C, 2013.
