"Underwater hydrothermal vents are known since the 1970s and their importance for the global economy is growing as new discoveries and new assessments are made each year (Cherkashov et al., 2010; Corliss et al., 1979). The similarities of seafloor massive sulfides, representing the younger versions of the well exploited on land volcanogenic massive sulfides, bring an increased awareness to the potential of the sea (Ajan G. Galley, 2007; Hannington et al., 2011; Herzig and Hannington, 1995). The Arctic Ocean presents itself as an opportunity to study new interest areas and numerous hydrothermal systems (active and inactive) were discovered along the Arctic Mid Ocean Ridge (AMOR) (Pedersen et al., 2010b). The Mohns ridge is an ultraslow spreading ridge of the AMOR (Vogt, 1986) where two hydrothermal vent sites were recently discovered, the Jan Mayen and the Loki’s Castle (Pedersen et al., 2010a; Pedersen et al., 2009; Pedersen, 2005). Here we compare these two Arctic hydrothermal systems, which represent two well-differentiated end-members of hydrothermal fields in the region."

The kinetics on the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied by use of series piezoelectric quartz crystal ( SPQC ). Arsenic ioninhibits the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, which is consistent with the previous results by other measuring method. This further demonstrates that the SPQC can monitor the chemical activity of the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Cupric ion accelerates the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The mechanism was discussed, it was considered that copper promotes the protein enzyme of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, rustic yanin, to form over the range of cupric ion concentration studied. There action order of cupric ion in accelerating the bacterial growth is 0.067. The growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is dependent on temperature, the apparent reaction activation energy decreases from25.56 kJ / mol to 18.32 kJ / mol because of the addition of 10 mg / L Cu(II) to the bacterial growth solution of pH 2.0 at initial inoculum of 10%.

When considering the mill drive system for a grinding application, a large number of questions must be answered. Depending on the mill size and type, the mill can be driven by several configurations of drive systems: a single low-speed motor connected to a pinion driving a ring gear, two low-speed motors connected to two pinions and driving a ring gear, or a gearless motor mounted directly. In addition, a gear drive system can have a reducer placed between a high-speed motor(s) and pinion(s) or a power path splitting pinion stand. In some designs the reducer is integral with the pinion stand driven by a high-speed motor. The technical and commercial implications of several mill drive options are presented. Initial cost, cost of installation, cost of commissioning, and cost of operation and maintenance are presented for each drive option considered. The impact of each drive system on the design, cost and operation of the overall plant electrical system is discussed. Also, consideration is given to mill drive availability, and the potential cost resulting from delays in plant production.

Filtration of fine particles involves filter cake formation and removal of surface moisture by drawing air through the porous structure. Accurate assessment of the transport properties of porous media (in this case, filter cake) is of major importance in the development of improved filtration processes. Implications from these studies are important in the design and operation of filtration equipment in order to enhance the efficiency of this important solid-liquid separation process. The microstructure and connectivity of pore space are important features necessary to describe detailed fluid flow phenomena in filter cake during fine particle filtration. In this regard, 3D characterization of pore structure is essential. The pore structure has to be described by parameters which are of special relevance to the interpretation of fluid transport phenomena. These parameters should be based on directly measured variables of the pore system and not inferred from indirect variables (such as those determined empirically from transport processes) valid only for a particular pore structure. In this way fundamental relationships between pore structure and fluid transport at the microstructure level can be described. In order to achieve this level of sophistication the three-dimensional interconnected pore structure of filter cake must be determined. Study of fluid transport phenomena in filter cake using x-ray microtomography to characterize the complex three-dimensional pore geometry is discussed. On this basis the Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method is used to simulate and to establish a fundamental relationship between pore microstructure and effective transport coefficients.

The application of aluminum matrix composites, due to their unique properties, is significantly growing in the variety of industries such as aerospace and automobile. In comparison to other light metals, such as magnesium and titanium, aluminum is lower in price. These are the advantages that this metal dominates the others. In this research, first by applying the lost foam casting method, the SiCp/A356 composite was cast in the bottom and side gate conditions with 690°C and volume fraction of 10%. Furthermore, the effects of reinforcement particles (60 µm, 75 µm) were examined. The results present the particles distribution in the side gate methods is more homogeneous than the bottom gate casting method. Also, by increasing the particles sizes, the fading rate in the side gate are reduced from 22% to 19%, as well as from 26.4% to 25.4% in the bottom gate. The need/wish to sequestrate CO2is based on the assumption of the International Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), that CO2 maybe the major driver in climatic changes, i.e. especially the anthropogenic CO2emissions due to the combustion of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas will increase the atmospheric CO2-content, which will lead to higher temperatures in the atmosphere. The 0.03% CO2in the atmosphere have a 22% share of the natural greenhouse gas effect of 33 K necessary for life on earth. The main share of 62% has the water vapour in the atmosphere. Only if one concentrates on the greenhouse gas effect of the gases beside water vapour, CO2 becomes most important with 58% influence. In addition there are other influences on the climate like: • Eccentricity of earth’s orbit, precession of orbital plane, obliquity and precession of earth’s rotation axis (Milankovitch’s theory) • Sunspots and magnetic field of the sun • Changing streams in the ocean • Volcanic activities • Distribution of continents on the surface of the earth • Impact of meteorites • Change of insulation by interplanetary dust [Muller, R.A. 2000] etc. To answer the question, if the CO2-content in the atmosphere has an important or exclusive influence on the earth atmospheric mean surface temperature, one should look into history. Figure 1shows the mean temperature of the atmosphere and the atmospheric CO2-content time histories 1 billion years back; no correlation can be found between them. Nevertheless a lot of countries have committed themselves to reduce their CO2-emissions.

Oregon Resources Corporation (ORC), an industrial minerals mining company, is currently engaged in the development of a new process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be mined efficiently and economically, creating an additional domestic source for chromite, garnet, and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America. Metallurgical study of the placer material was grouped into four distinct samples based on marine terrace deposition, geological facies, and mineralogy. Because the metallurgical samples represented the extremes likely to be encountered in all future Oregon paleo-beach placer ores, the process design is highly dynamic and will successfully adjust to meet the production needs. Water availability at the mining area is seasonal and will not support a typical placer operation?s water requirement needs for heavy mineral concentration. For this reason, ORC has developed a plan to construct the ore processing facilities near Coos Bay, where a municipal source of water is available. Raw ore will be transported from the mining sites approximately twenty miles one way to the processing facility with return loads hauling tailings back to the active pit. The need to haul dry tailings, return dry material to the pit for reclamation, and limit the amount of water being purchased from the municipality has driven the design of a unique water reclamation system. BACKGROUND Location and Access Economic concentrations of ?black sand? or heavy mineral (minerals with specific gravity greater than 2.85) have been recognized and studied in marine placers from Coos Bay to the mouth of the Rogue River, a distance of approximately 75 miles along the southern Oregon coast (Hornor, 1918; Griggs, 1945)(Figure 1). ORC will begin mining existing reserves approximately 20 miles south of Coos Bay in a region known locally as Seven Devils. Ore will be trucked north to the processing site near Coos Bay via use of existing county and state roads, including U.S. 101. The available facilities at the processing site include highway, rail, municipal water and electricity, natural gas, and a deep water port. At the time of this writing, the rail line had been abandoned, but was being pursued by the International Port of Coos Bay. It is anticipated that this will be serviceable at some time in the future. History The southern Oregon marine placers have garnered the interests of miners since 1852, when present day beaches were exploited for gold. The beach deposits were small and irregular in nature and were easily washed away by the major storms the coast endures during the winter months (Hornor, 1918). [ ] In the 1920?s, deposits at the beach were followed upstream to their paleo-beach terrace origins (Pardee, 1934). These terrace placers were mined, but with little success, as the cost of mining and processing was greater than at the present day beach deposits. The greatest effort to understand and delineate the paleo-beach terrace placers came during World War II. As the need for a domestic source of steel hardening chromite was evident, the heavy mineral bearing placers of southwestern Oregon provided just that. The U.S. Geological Survey, under guidance from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, began exploration drilling of the paleo-beach terraces in 1940 (Griggs, 1945). This work was part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits and would ultimately supply much needed chromite for the war efforts. This paper presents the use of non-parametric approach (i.e., data envelopment analysis, DEA) for the development of environmental sustainability indicators in mineral processing using environmental, economic and/or integrated indicators (i.e., indicators that interrelate two dimensions of sustainability). A case study based on real publicly available data is presented to illustrate how the proposed approach can be implemented in practice. The merit of this approach, which is based on the productive efficiency framework, is that it provides environmental sustainability indicators that can be used internally for benchmarking purposes and externally for sustainability reporting.

In responding to mine fires and explosions, accurate and timely analysis of the mine atmosphere is critical in making decisions regarding firefighting, mine rescue and mine recovery operations. For many years instantaneous analyses were available to rescue workers using handheld or portable gas detection equipment, including infrared, electrochemical, or catalytic measuring devices for a limited number of specific gases such as oxygen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Instantaneous sensing technology is not available for all gases, such as nitrogen and hydrocarbons, found in a mine fire atmosphere and cross-sensitivity can be a problem with this technology. For these reasons, air samples are collected for injection into a gas chromatograph for a complete and accurate analysis for all gases including oxygen, nitrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, as well as ?fire gases? such as hydrogen, ethylene, ethane, and acetylene. This method requires additional time for transporting the samples to the laboratory near the mine, as well as an instrument operator to inject the samples for analysis. The use of a portable micro gas chromatograph with a continuous and automatic injection system has been implemented by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during mine recovery operations. The device directly samples the mine atmosphere from an underground location every twelve minutes and automatically analyzes the samples for all of the mine fire gases. The portable unit utilizes micro technology and the operating software has been modified to perform the calculation of sample results in and Excel® spreadsheet without user interaction. This paper describes the micro gas chromatograph system and its use at a recent mine recovery operation. The automated remote operation of the micro gas chromatograph has been shown to be a good alternative to infrared and electrochemical sensors used for mine atmosphere analysis.

Waste rock facilities (WRF) generally have a large footprint depending on the strip ratio the mine plan provides. Considerable planning is involved during the initial phase of the mine plan regarding the location of the WRF. As the mining operations are commenced the locations of the WRF change accordingly with the variations in the mine plan involving feedback and support from local communities and stakeholders. Waste rock facilities management becomes challenging when the area available for placement is limited due to terrain topography, environmental and permitting constraints. Risks associated in the design of waste rock facilities constitute particle size of rock, chemistry associated with the rock for reactivity and stability of the over all facility. This paper will provide some insights on designing, scheduling and managing a WRF. Emphasis on geotechnical, geophysics and geochemistry aspects of waste rock with reference to design, construction process and scheduling of WRF are also presented. Design improvements in the reclamation slope of WRF for erosion control will be discussed. Continuous improvement (CI) methodology will be introduced in the process of WRF operations. Current practices and future recommendations towards sustainability and consistency in operating WRF will be discussed in conclusion.

For open pits developed in tropical climates the upper portions of the pit walls are often located in residual soils and weathered rock. Due to the presence of relict structures, and the relatively low strength of the residual soils and weathered rock, design slope angles in these materials have to be developed by blending the results of kinematic assessments of geologic structures with rock mass stability analyses and traditional soil mechanics. Background information on the engineering considerations of residual soils are discussed, and the results of geotechnical assessments for proposed pit design of the Brisas del Cuyuni Project, located in southeastern Venezuela, are presented.

Acid production or acid drainage is a major environmental issue that also has negative implications on the aquifer system surrounding the mine tailings area. The approach to controlling acid mine drainage involves physical and geochemical characterization that affect acid production. The material permeability determines the availability of oxygen, which is paramount in acid production in coal rejects, and varies with depth. In this paper the author presents the variation in oxidized pyrite/acid production with depth in black coal mine washery wastes. Chemical kinetic parameters and the diffusive parameters have been used to obtain the variation in oxygen content and the oxidized pyrite content with respect to the depth and time. Its dependence on porosity and moisture content is illustrated.

This study presents the results of synthesizing monolithic siliconoxynitride, Si2N2O, ceramic from a mixture composed of reclaimed silicon and natural desert sand by using the nitriding combustion synthesis method. Single-phase Si2N2O powder was prepared by the combustion of a mixture composed of silicon and pulverized sand in 3 MPa nitrogen gas. The combustion reaction completed in 2 min and the combustion temperature reached 1577°C.The as-synthesized Si2N2O powder is agglomerate of fine particles with sizes < 5 µm and has various morphologies; rod-like and irregular crystals, irregular kinking, hollow crystals and grown pseudo-hexagonal prismatic crystals. Porous Si2N2O compacts (24.5–47.1% porosities) were fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder at different calcia-alumina additives (5–20 wt%) by normal sintering at 1500°C for 1 hr in N2atmosphere.They showed superior oxidation-resistance at high temperatures up to 1500°C in an oxidizing atmosphere of Ar/O2/H2O(70/20/10 kPa).Near-full dense Si2N2O compacts were also successfully fabricated from the synthesized Si2N2O powder with 5 wt% oxide additives by using the spark plasma sintering at 1600°C.DenseSi2N2O had good mechanical properties (18.7 GPa Vickers hardness, 3.3 MPa.m1/2fracture toughness and 363 MPa strength) and excellent chemical and oxidation resistance.

The removal of gangue minerals from three different graphite ores (Inebolu, Akdag?madeni and Çoraklidere) from Turkey by acid leaching was studied. Acid leaching experiments were applied to the flotation bulk concentrates, which were obtained in determined optimum conditions after preliminary flotation tests. The effects of acid type, acid concentration, leaching temperature and leaching time on the dissolution of gangue minerals were studied. The most suitable leaching conditions were determined to be 20% HCl + 4% HF for acid type and concentration, 85 ºC for leaching temperature and 4 hours for leaching time. After removing the gangue minerals at these optimum conditions, the total carbon contents of the samples from Inebolu, Akdag?madeni and Çoraklidere increased from 23.51% to 40.07%, from 37.93 to 60.47% and from 42.28 to 59.47%, respectively.

The Fe(II) regeneration process is an important aspect of Alternate Anode Reaction Technology (AART) for copper electrowinning (EW). In AART, Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) at the anode during EW, and it must be regenerated to maintain recyclable electrolytes. Regeneration is achieved via Fe(III) reduction by SO2(aq), and the reaction is catalyzed by activated carbon particles. To better understand this process, a kinetic model was developed and experimentally validated for the Fe(II) regeneration in the current work. The investigation focused on the primary reaction mechanism and the reaction rate dependence on four variables: carbon particle size, flow rate, initial Fe(III) concentration and initial SO2 concentration. The Fe(II) regeneration reaction is mass-transfer controlled in the presence of activated carbon. Carbon particle size and initial Fe(III) are the most influential factors under the conditions tested. Initial SO2 concentration is insignificant to the reaction rate.

The Hallandsås project with a long history, first started in 1991, is well known in the tunneling community. In the past it has been stopped twice for technical and environmental reasons. The third attempt started in 2004 using a dual mode rock TBM. The heterogeneous highly fractured and abrasive rock mass as well as large areas of water bearing zones present most difficult subsurface conditions. The tunneling concept is based on the use of watertight segmental lining and a TBM able to operate in open mode, possibilities for extensive pre excavation grouting and high pressure closed mode operation up to 13 bar to cover exceptional conditions.

The Wolf Creek Upper Narrows Tunnel (Upper Narrows Tunnel) is one of the first major highway tunnel in the United States implementing the use of spray-on membrane for purposes of constructing a double-shell drainage solution between an initial shotcrete lining and a final cast-in-place concrete lining (Figure 1). In the case of the Upper Narrows Tunnel the primary membrane is constructed with a spray-on product manufactured by Degussa, namely Masterseal® 340 FA (MS 340) that has been utilized previously in other tunnel projects. Shotcrete-like in application, but differing in physical properties, MS 340 is now outdated, and is succeeded by Masterseal® 345 (MS 345), a nearly identical product, with improvements in material properties. Tunnel project histories utilizing either MS 340 or MS 345 are discussed and summarized with regard to the respective motives for prompting spray-on membrane selection and the realized benefits resulting from spray-on membrane construction. With an emphasis on the Upper Narrows Tunnel, project summaries discuss details of the aspects of design for spray-on membrane construction methodology as opposed to conventional sheet membrane construction methodologies. It is anticipated that experience gained during the construction of the Upper Narrows Tunnel with respect to other tunnel projects that have utilized spray-on membrane will be of use for future tunnels employing spray-on membrane in drainage solutions.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade reports 6,000 mineral occurrences of 80 metals and minerals. Mongolia has already attracted much foreign investment in the mining sector. Mining is the country’s largest industry. It is responsible for 17 percent of the gross domestic product, 65 percent of industrial output and 57 percent of export earnings.

Longwall mining began within the Pittsburgh coalbed of Pennsylvania (PA) in the early 1970?s. Originally, longwall mine layouts were designed to fit within existing room-and-pillar operations, where panels were limited to that of typical production panels, e.g. a few hundred feet wide by a few thousand feet long. In these early designs, the gate entries were comprised of chain pillars similar to those found along main entry systems or within pillar recovery sections. The modern longwall mine has little in common with their 1970?s predecessors. Today the entire mine layout is designed around the longwall mining method. The longwall panels have grown to well over one thousand feet in width with lengths now measured in miles. In addition, development pillar sizes and shapes are matched to specific performance requirements.
