The authors are to be commended for finding a material for pellets binding that we were unable to uncover during the investigations that led to US Patent No. 3,748,116, “Method for producing metallic iron powder from iron ore concentrate, ” July 24, 1973, by G.G. Reed, Jr., J.M. Karpinski, and S.V. Fox. This patent concerns a method of processing “super’ ‘-concentrates prepared from magnetite or “blue dust” into molding-grade metallic iron powder for use as a bulk commodity, in contrast to current methods which produce small batches that are custom-blended with additives and/or alloye to customer specifications. The one thing we had not found at that time was an organic binder (mineral-matter-free ) that would allow induration to produce hardened pellets that would survive SL/RN Direct Reduction. Peridur appears to provide this missing link needed for large scale (200 t/a, or 220,460 stpy) single line plant capacity consistent with a low market price to ensure greatly broadened use of metallic iron powder. I hope that industry will adopt this combination so that metallic iron powder usage can fulfill its potential

Copper was recovered from copper sulfate solution in a batch-recycled galvanic reactor operated under forced convection with the generation of electrical energy during the cementation process. The divided galvanic cell consisted of parallel copper and zinc plates. The mass transfer rate and the amount of electrical energy generated were found to be directly proportional to the solution flow rate and the initial concentration of metallic ions and inversely proportional to the distance between electrodes. The experimental results were expressed in terms of a dimensionless correlation including all parameters. The wastewater treatment presented herein cell can be utilized to recover many soluble heavy metal ions from solution with high efficiency.

The rheological properties of mineral suspensions affect the design and operation of transport, mixing, size classification, grinding, gravity concentration, flotation and de-watering systems. In many cases, the rheological properties can be modified to improve processing through the addition of chemical additives. These additives may be either organic or inorganic and generally affect the state of particle aggregation or dispersion. Inorganic modifiers act primarily by affecting the surface charge of mineral particles and thus control the magnitude of electrostatic attraction/repulsion between particles. The action of organic additives (polymers and surfactants) is a combination of electrostatic and steric forces – the latter being related to the molecular weight of these reagents. While low molecular weight polymers are dispersants (viscosity reducers), high molecular weight polymers are likely to induce flocculation and increase yield stress.

Carbonate-hosted massive sulfide (60%) ores of the western Cordillera compose a distinct class of deposits although they vary widely in detail and perhaps genesis. They have been important sources of lead, zinc, copper, silver, gold, and more rarely, molybdenum, tin, and tungsten in complex mineral assemblages usually dominated by pyrite. They occur as concordant stratiform bodies, as discordant mantos, and as chimneys crossing tens of meters of section; many are associated with faults and breccia bodies. Environments of formation of carbonate hosts range from craton basin to shelf with ages from Proterozoic to Cretaceous; in many instances, dating has shown mineralization to be significantly younger than hosts. Temperatures of formation determined for many deposits are high (200°-400°) and many districts are centers of igneous activity manifested by dikes, sills, and stocks. However, direct cause and effect relationships have been difficult to establish. Many important problems attend the renewed interest and study of these deposits and include questions of metal-sulfur sources, metallization processes and histories, geological controls at all scales, and relationships to broader patterns of metallogeny.

Two epiclastic horizons in an Archean volcanic sequence host the gold occurrences on the Dunraine property near Wawa, Ontario, Canada. The Grace horizon of cherty and pelitic tuff strikes north-northwest and dips east. Native gold occurs with arsenopyrite in bedlike and podlike bodies of quartz lenses and stringers set in a pelitic matrix. The Parkhill horizon of lithic graywacke with associated flow-breccia strikes southwest and dips south. Native gold occurs with minor sulfides in similar bodies of quartz erratic within the Parkhill horizon. The auriferous bodies occupy paleotopographic channels and troughs within the two horizons. The former producers are the Parkhill mine with 1689 kg (54,300 oz) Au, Darwin mine with 473 kg (15,200 oz) Au, and Van Sickle mine with 48 kg (1536 oz) Au between 1902 and 1944. The gold occurrences are syndepositional with the host volcanic sediments laid during a pause in explosive volcanism. Fumaroles along steep gullies on the flank of a subaqueous volcanic center precipitated aprons of auriferous silica-sulfide mud. Downslope slumping resulted in exhalative debris flows; gold concentrated in flexures and depressions along stumpage channels. Renewed explosive volcanism covered the auriferous sediments with pyroclastic tuffs, arresting the slumping of in situ fumarolic deposits.

The lanthanon compounds are becoming increasingly more important for ceramic and allied applications. As the supply increases and the cost decreases, further development of these interesting materials will undoubtedly lead to new applications and an increased demand. Recent improvements in separation processes have lead to high purity in the individual lanthanon oxides. This report includes short discussions on the mineralogy of the ores as raw materials, and on the separation processes required to produce the pure individual lanthanon oxides in useful quantities. To discuss the presently known applications of lanthanon oxides, this general review is divided into the following categories: A. Glasses, Glazes, and Porcelain Enamels. B. Refractories and Abrasives. C. Electronic Ceramics. D. Nuclear Ceramics.

"The New Face of Mining is a recognition of the central role of human beings in mining and the underappreciated power they can have in generating breakthroughs in business performance and shareholder value. The key is people creating, aligning on, and subsequently enacting the future of mining. A methodology that is effective creates a corporate environment for alignment to be possible and then transforms operations by embedding the necessary behaviors, processes and practices. The people within the organization then are empowered to find and to implement solutions quickly, as measured business results demonstrate in case histories of diverse mining challenges around the globe and over the decades.Urgent case for actionThe physics of mining does not change fundamentally over time, but the context in which it operates changes rapidly, periodically requiring a new face of mining. “The New Face of Mining,” which has been used as a metaphor for the campus-wide mineral resources research organization at the University of Arizona, has many facets, including societal, generational, technological, financial and environmental, but at the center, always, is humanity. The New Face of Mining is not necessarily about age, it is about people first imagining and then creating a new future for mining. The challenges facing the global industry evolve from year to year and differ in individual companies or mines at any one time.Quantified outcomes from case studies indicate that a methodology, now also offered annually in a four-day, open-enrollment leadership program tailored to the mining industry, is effective at generating breakthrough results in the mining business. Such challenges range from those with important technical components to others that are mostly social challenges. Our focus, however, is the centrality of people in aligning on and enacting the future of mining. We use the phrase New Face of Mining for leadership and ways to empower people in organizations that commonly are overlooked in the mining industry. Some of the material in this article is based on the ideas of Werner Erhard and on the book by Steve Zaffron and Dave Logan (2009), The Three Laws of Performance: Rewriting the Future of Your Organization and Your Life.At Davos, Switzerland in January 1992, nine visionary mining chief executive officers (CEO) gathered to create the Global Mining Initiative. Much has changed in the 26 years since that meeting:• The world GDP has increased from US$25.4 trillion to $75.8 trillion.• The annual number of U.S. patent applications increased from 186,000 to 629,000.• The number of websites has increased from 100 to 1 billion.• The number of academic references to artificial intelligence has climbed from more than 16,000 to more than 1 million.• The number of cell phone subscribers grew from 11 million in the United States to four billion globally."

An AIME transaction by P.L. Allsman (1960), "Analysis of Explosive Action in Breaking Rock," contains many useful concepts applicable to blast design. Of special interest was the derivation of a heave blasting burden formula, which is important in establishing the maximum burden. Unfortunately, its derivation contains a fundamental error and then a compensating one. This formula was: [ ] The derivation used the impulse-momentum principle, with a 0.3 m thick (1 ft thick) radius of rock mass being acted on by an explosive impulse. However, the rock weight was not converted to mass by dividing by the gravitational constant. This mistake can be verified by checking the units in the formula, which resolve into m%-sec instead of meters. Adding the gravitational constant corrects this: [ ] If the minimum velocity is now taken as 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec), as was recommended, excessively large burdens result. Any appropriate rock velocity should be capable of throwing the rock mass a minimum distance so that the swell needed for breakage can occur. Unless the burden is extremely small and the bench height is very high, it is unlikely that a velocity of only 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec) will be sufficient. A review of the literature indicates that average rock velocities observed by camera studies typically range from 15 to 30 m/sec (50 to 100 ft per sec) (duPont deNemours and Co., 1977; Tansey, 1979). On this basis, a minimum rock velocity of about 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) would be expected and not 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). When a velocity of 15 m/sec (49 ft per sec) is inserted into the corrected formula, the results approximate those of the original formula with a velocity of 0.3 m/sec (1 ft per sec). Most mines are large producing 0-25 mmt annually. The coal is mine.) at depths ranging from .0-150 m 120-500 ft mining at 300 m .(,1000 ft) depth is anticipated in the future. Single and multiple seams ranging from 3-12 m 10-40 ft) in thickness are mined. Most overburden is unconsolidated and consists of sands, and sandy or silty clays. The stripping ratio (volume of overburden to volume of coal mined) varies from 3-L. The overburden and coal is mined in benches 8-12 m -(24-40ft) high; the high-wall angle is about 45 degrees. Bucket wheel and bucket chain excavators are commonly utilized for overburden and coal removal, Some of the large overburden stripping machines nave capacities. Ranging from 4400-10,000 bank cu ( 6000-14,000 BC) per hour. The overburden from the upper benches is transported around the pit using the trains and belt conveyors. It is deposited in the spoils using large stacker-conveyor systems capable of handling 2550-7300 cu m/hour (7500-10,000 cu yds/hour). The overburden from the bottom two or three benches is transported across the pit using the conveyor bridges which are computer controlled. Conveyor bridges capable of handling overburden up to 60 m (200 ft) high are currently in use; a 60 a (20e ft) high conveyor bridge has a capacity of 85 x 10 cu ( 118 x 10 cu yd) annually. The coal is loaded in the trains directly and shipped to power plants or coke oven plants.

"Highwall miners have been widely used to extract additional coal reserves from existing surface operations, particularly on contour operations in the Appalachian coalfields. Using a continuous miner cutting head, coal may be extracted from significant depths (such as 150 m), leaving behind an array of web and barrier pillars with the purpose of maintaining highwall stability. This method inherently involves elevated risks to both equipment and personnel due to proximity to and increased exposure time near highwalls. As a result, modern operations should actively design web and barrier pillars to maximize extraction while providing adequate stability. The ARMPS-HWM software, an empirical-based program created for the design of web and barrier pillars at highwall mining operations, is one such approach. The calculated stability factor is compared with empirically established guidelines produced from examining case histories.The ARMPS-HWM program is a handy tool for initial design, but understanding the site’s structurally significant geologic features and geomechanical behavior is important and may potentially increase extraction. We created a two-dimensional numerical model using FLAC3D and calibrated it to ensure pillar strength, closely following the Mark- Bieniawski formula for a typical range of pillar geometries and overburden properties. The development of pillar stresses along a highwall panel was then numerically investigated as mining progressed, and the stress distribution between barrier pillars was found to be asymmetric, which can result in an over-design of the closeout web pillars if tributary area loading is assumed. Finally, the importance of adequate barrier pillar stability is highlighted."

The emulsion conditions, the technological factors such as ratios of oil to the internal aqueous phase and water to emulsion, and the extraction time etc. were investigated.

Investment in the ferrous sector between 1981 and 1985 will total about $9 billion, or 7.6% of the state budget for capital assets. The money will primarily go to complete the first stage of the Baoshan Iron and Steel complex and to increase steel production by 3 Mt* (3.3 million st) and seamless tubing by 0.5 Mt (551,000 st). Investment in 1983 will be about $3.5 billion, a 28% increase over 1981. Although data on nonferrous investment is less specific, the Chinese announced early this spring that the country's investment would be 2.6 times greater than the average spent during the previous five year plans. Geological surveying will also be stepped up. The Ministry of Geology and Minerals recently announced it will incorporate a search for metal and mineral resources into its second round of oil and gas surveys. The Sixth Five-Year Plan desig¬nates some actual production targets. Steel is to increase to more than 72 Mt (79.4 million st). The country's production of 10 priority nonferrous metals - aluminum (and bauxite), copper, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium, and titanium - is to increase 12.7%. Top priority is to develop aluminum production. Renewed efforts are to be made to develop gold and silver production and to increase rare earth and rare metal production. By April 1983 when the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. was established, some five months after publication of the Five-Year Plan, the goals for nonferrous development had already been upgraded and changed to include: • development priority status equal to that of coal's; • an increase of more than 150% in the 1985 projected production level for the 10 top nonferrous metals (a move from the Sixth Five-year Plan's production increase of 12.7% to one of 34%); and • modification of the top 10 nonferrous metals list to include tungsten, molybdenum, and rare earths. Aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc maintained primary importance, while mercury, magnesium, and titanium were deleted. It is likely that the modification will be taken one step further and titanium will be substituted for antimony. China has already indicated its intentions to stabilize rather than expand its antimony industry, while press reports play up the titanium industry's importance to the country's development. In addition, the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. announced that it expects to register a progressive annual increase of 4% in foreign currency earnings through export. China's nonferrous development efforts, therefore, appear two-pronged. First, the country's efforts will be directed toward self-sufficiency in its four major process and primary metals - aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead - and a number of other nonferrous metals that are in increasing demand by its light industry sector. At present, 96% of China's non¬ferrous consumption is composed of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. Substantial portions of that must be imported to meet rising demand. Second, efforts will concentrate on those metals that can be developed the fastest and are in "urgent demand" on the international market. Metals such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and rare earths will be given freer use of foreign capital and technology to increase production levels and raise quality. Examples of some projects in the area include upgrading the country's carbide industry and developing new high speed and tool steels to meet international standards. This study investigated roof falls in room-and-pillar drift coal mines in eastern Kentucky and utilized geologic methods for predicting roof conditions in advance of mining. In the Highsplint mine, the roof was classified in four categories or conditions: Condition A and B (Laminated Shale), Condition C (Rolling Sandstone with Shale in Pockets) and Condition D (Zone of Major Sandstone Roll(s)). Structure contour and isopach maps of the Darby coal bed and associated immediate roof rocks were used to project axial trends of the sandstone roof. Trend mapping in the mine and on outcrop provided more detailed control for roof projections.

Coal was discovered in South Africa in the mid 1830's. The earliest exploitation of modern times was probably in Natal where, in a letter dated 20 August 1842, a Captain Smith mentions that a wagonload of coal brought to Pietermaritzburg, was sold. Until the discovery of diamonds in 1867 and the Witwatersrand gold in 1886, coal mining satisfied a very small domestic demand. By 1889, at least four collieries were operating in the Middelburg-Witbank district, some 120 kilometres East of Johannesburg, and mining had star- ted at Vereeniging, about 50 kilometres to the South of Johannesburg. A map of South Africa is shown in Figure 1 and an enlargement of the main coal mining areas in Figure 2.

This paper describes the application of a cyclonic flotation column (CFC) for coal cleaning. A CFC makes use of centrifugal force to create a density gradient in a column to augment the froth flotation process. In a CFC, a series of angular helical inserts is attached to the wall of a conventional column and coal slurry is mixed with a series of impellers attached to a central shaft. The hydrophobic froth concentrates near the center shaft and moves upward, while the relatively heavy hydrophilic particles concentrate near the wall and are guided downward by the helical inserts. Results of pyritic sulfur removal from an Upper Freeport coal during CFC flotation are discussed in this paper.

The paper considers the selection of control instrumentation for a modern flotation plant, as well as the best interpretation and most effective use of the process data obtained. Process control computer availability is considered from the outset. A general philosophy of control is proposed which leads toward a system that is its own reliability monitor. The bulk of the problems are in grinding and classification. Alternative control methods are described that use particle size measuring devices. Flotation controls, based to a large extent upon on-stream X-ray analysis, are reviewed in detail. Reagent control methods are also examined. Methods to analyze the data obtained from the various measurement devices are introduced. These methods would enable an estimate of the validity of the data and require some redundant information. Another objective of these methods is the protection of operating equipment from possible control malfunctions. Although the discussion generally considers some degree of computer usage, this paper attempts to describe instrumentation and data analysis methods that enable control with or without the process control computer.

In 1987, the Rock Springs, WY district office of the US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began to develop an automated system to store, maintain and manipulate more than 14,000 drill hole logs contained in the district's office files for various solid leasable minerals. The development of this system was based predominantly on a trial-and-error basis, with many procedural changes incorporated over time. The current Automated Drill Hole Database and Analysis System will continue to evolve with new software developments and increased personal expertise in this field. The mission of the BLM's Branch of Solid Minerals is mandated by a series of federal laws. The most important are The Mineral Leasing Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, the Federal Coal Lease Amendments Act and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. Several regulations, promulgated from these laws, dictate that BLM must perform certain tasks and functions as part of its specific duties. The regulations that apply to the BLM Solid Minerals program are codified at 43 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 3400 for coal, and at 43 CFR 3500 for non-energy solid leasable minerals, such as sodium, phosphate and potash. Specific functions required of the Branch of Solid Minerals necessitates the use of geologic and drill hole data analyses. These functions can be divided into pre-lease and post-lease. This paper discusses the overall challenges to construct a two-lane highway tunnel located in southwestern Colorado on U.S. Highway 160 for the Colorado Department of Transportation by the Kiewit Western Company. The purpose of this project is to provide the excavation and temporary support for a highway tunnel 280 m (916 feet) long. The tunnel cross section is 14.3 m (47 feet) wide by 8.5 m (28 feet) high, 105 m2 (1,130 SF).Construction methods include conventional drill and blast excavation with rockbolt and shotcrete ground support. This unique tunnel is being constructed under alpine tunnelling conditions and in the immediate vicinity of active highway traffic.

Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system. Phase one is the installation of a proof-of-concept system at a concrete batch plant, while phase two involves scaling up the system to include additional sensors, more detailed safety/performance metrics, proximity detection, and predictive failure analysis.

Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) developed the Meandu Mine in Queensland, Australia in 1983 to supply thermal coal to the adjacent and newly constructed Tarong Power Station (TPS). In designing the mine, RTCA selected Meandu?s best economic reserves for a 27-year life based on station owner Tarong Energy Corp.?s (TECs) estimated life for TPS. That 27-year plan changed dramatically in the early 2000s when TEC approved life extensions to TPS?s four existing units plus construction of a fifth unit. After reviewing Meandu?s remaining reserves, RTCA decided the nearby Kunioon reserve offered the more economic option for maintaining deliveries beyond 2010. Those plans changed again in 2007 when TEC chose to purchase the Meandu Mine and nearby reserves. TEC then selected Thiess Pty Ltd. (Thiess) to continue operating Meandu until the new mine at Kunioon could be developed. After assuming operation of the mine in 2008, Thiess began a review of Meandu?s remaining reserves and found considerable coal available with economic potential. Working jointly with TEC, Thiess performed several analyses on Meandu and subsequently the Kunioon coal reserves. The results changed TEC?s decision from expediting Kunioon?s construction to instead continuing Meandu?s operation for up to 15 additional years.
