A set of six design principles for rock engineering was developed by Bieniawski: design objectives; minimum uncertainty; simplicity of design components; state-of-the-art practice; optimization; and constructability. These principles translate into a ten-step design process. Although this methodology was developed for rock engineering, it is applicable to any design process, feasibility study, etc. Diligent use of such a process will ensure that a defensible design or evaluation has been carried out. Recently a ?strategic conversation? process has been identified by Ilbury and Sunter that includes the following ten steps: scope; players; rules of the game; key uncertainties; scenarios; SWOT analysis; options; decisions; measurable outcomes; and meaning of winning. A comparison of these steps with those of the design process shows a remarkable correlation. This is perhaps not surprising since engineering design is a strategic up-front issue, and front end loading in a project is critical to achieve the expected project performance. Based on the close correlation between the strategic conversation and engineering design processes, a circular design process, rather than a linear process, is proposed. The ?circle of design? better reflects the importance of review and monitoring in the two phases of successful design and implementation?defining the design, and executing the design.

As part of an investigation of possible water-saving measures at Anglo American Platinum's Mogalakwena Mine in Limpopo, South Africa, a study was made of conditions on the wet beaches of two adjacent tailings dams, each serving a separate plant on the mine. For one of the dams, a special catamaran was designed and constructed to enable the full length of wet beaches to be accessed and sampled immediately after a layer of tailings had been deposited. For the other dam, the wet beach was accessed using conveyor belting and scaffold planks. The length of the beaches was 400 m on the first dam, and 200 m on the second, and each was sampled at 50 m intervals. The parameters reported in this paper, for both beaches, are: > Water content profiles along each beach from the surface to as deep as 2.5 m, at times ranging from 12 hours to 6 weeks from the end of deposition > Particle size distributions at the surface, down the full length of the beaches > Measurements of feed relative density, tonnage and volume, decant and drain flow volumes, as well as rainfall and evaporation for both dams. The surface water contents shortly after deposition have been used to establish the relative density of the settled, decanted tailings and its variation down the beach. This data, combined with the decant and drainage flows, is used to establish the calculated and actual water recoveries from both dams.

ABSTRACT: When considering the rock stress component of rock mechanics design, the basic procedure is to consider the pre-existing stress-state in the rock mass and then estimate the disturbance to this stress state as a result of engineering excavation. Failure criteria are applied to the final stress state to establish whether failure will occur. However, during the evolution of the stress state, the failure locus may be reached before the anticipated failure state and, in this case, failure will occur unexpectedly. This indicates that the complete stress path (defined as the variations in magnitudes and orientations of the stress tensor components resulting from engineering-induced or natural changes) must be considered. We list a set of stress path principles with their corollaries and then introduce a new and powerful method for simultaneously illustrating changes in the six independent components of the stress tensor. This method plots the magnitudes of the principal stresses above their orientational paths on the hemispherical projection, to provide a three-dimensional stress path locus for each of the three principal stress components. In connection with this presentational device, we illustrate a number of concepts associated with the stress path in rock engineering. For example, we show how the minor principal stress approaches zero at an unsupported excavation face, the interchange of the trajectories of two principal stresses when their magnitudes become equal, and the influence of the bounds on the principal stresses given by strength criteria. RESUME: Si on s’interesse à la composante “contrainte” lors d’un dimensionnement en mécanique des roches, la méthode de base consiste à considérer l’état de contrainte pré-existant dans le massif rocheux, puis d’estimer la perturbation à cet état générée par l’excavation projetée. Des critères de rupture sont appliqués à l’état de contrainte final pour établir si une rupture va se produire. Cependant, lors de l’évolution de l’état de contrainte, la surface critique peut être atteinte ce qui provoquera une rupture anticipée et, dans ce cas, cette dernière sera inattendue. Cela indique que le chemin de contrainte complet (défini par les variations de l’intensité et de l’orientation des composantes du tenseur des contraintes liées à des causes anthropiques ou naturelles) doit être pris en compte. Nous présentons un ensemble de règles pour les chemins de contraintes ainsi que leurs corollaires et, ensuite, nous introduisons une méthode, nouvelle et puissante, pour présenter simultannement les changements des six composantes du tenseur des contraintes. Cette méthode consiste à tracer l’intensité des contraintes principales sur le chemin d’orientation des contraintes à l’aide d’une projection hémisphérique afin d’obtenir le lieu, en trois dimensions, de chaque contrainte principale. En relation avec cet outil de représentation, nous illustrons certains concepts associés au chemin de contrainte en ingénierie au rocher. Par exemple, nous montrons comment la contrainte mineure tend vers zero à la surface d’une excavation sans soutenement, le changement de direction des deux contraintes principales quand leur intensité deviennent égales, et l’influence des conditions aux limites sur les contraintes fournies par un critère de rupture. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Bei ingenieurmassigen Taetigkeiten in Felsgesteinen ist es noetig die ungestoerten Gesteins Stress Componenten, die vor einem anthropogen Eingriff im Gestein vorhanden waren, zu kennen und erst dann Vorhersagen ueber Stoerung des Stress Zustandes, der durch einen ingenieurmaessigen Eingriff hervorgerufen wird, herzuleiten. Kriterien fuer das Versagen werden im letzten Stadium, des Stress Zustandes angewendet, um zu erfahren ob ein Versagen wohl eintreten wird. Es ist jedoch zu beachten, dass waehrend des Stress Aufbaus ein oertliches Versagen eintreten kann, welches vor dem eigentlichen, erwarteten Versagens Zustand auftritt. Diese Moeglichkeit weist darauf hin, dass der gesammte “Stress Path” (definiert durch die Variationen der Stress Tensor Komponenten in Richtung und Groesse, hervorgerufen durch ingenieurmaessig hervorgerufene oder natuerlich Vorgaenge) betrachtet werden muss. Wir fuehren eine Liste der “Stress Path” Prinzipien auf und stellen dann eine neue und wirksame Methode zur gleichzeitigen Darstellung der sechs unabhaegigen Komponenten des Stress Tensors vor. Diese Methode stellt die Groesse der “Principal Stresses” in Abhaengigkeit von ihrem rauemlichen Weg auf einer hemispherischen Projektion dar und erlaubt hiermit eine drei dimensionale Darstellung fuer jeden Ort des “Stress Path’s” in die drei Haupt Stress Komponenten. Im Zusammenhang mit der hier gegebenen Darstellungsart, verdeutlichen wir eine Reihe von Konzepten in der Felsmechanik. Wir zeigen zum Beispiel, wie der “Minor Principal Stress” Null zustrebt an einer Wand von einer nicht abgestuetzten Ausschachtung, den Austausch von Trajektorien zweier “Principal Stresses” wenn ihre Groessen sich gleichen, und den Einfluss der Groesse von “Principal Stresses” bei gegebenen Kriterien des Festgkeits Versagens.

Exxaro Sands KZN produces?among other heavy mineral products?high titania slag, which is used as feedstock to the pigment industry. The titania slag is produced from the smelting of ilmenite in two 36 MW DC furnaces. In this smelting process carbon monoxide gas is produced. This gas is cooled, scrubbed and washed to remove entrained dust. This paper provides details on the gas cleaning plant system and the chemistry, mineralogy and size distribution of the particulate material contained in the off-gas stream. Characterization of the dust shows that is consists mainly of ilmenite, but with relatively high levels of SiO2and MnO. Smelting of the dust in a 500 kW DC furnace was carried out to investigate the potential for recovering valuable elements from the dust.

A series of parametric studies were carried out for a flotation cell using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling to determine the local response of hydrodynamic performance measures to change in operating conditions. As an example, an Outotec cell was used to carry out the response analysis. The hydrodynamics of the flotation cell has been previously investigated by laboratory measurements presented by Schwarz et al (2019), and a CFD model of the cell was developed and validated using these measurement data (Schwarz et al., 2019). In this work, parametric studies have been performed by modelling the flotation cell at different stirring speeds and gas flowrates, varying above and below standard conditions. Predictions of void fraction, bubble size, bubble surface area flux and particle–bubble collision rate are presented showing the effects of increasing and decreasing stirring speed and gas flowrate around the base case. Generally, the total gas holdup in the flotation cell was found to increase with increasing gas flowrate. The bubble diameter was found to decrease with increasing stirring speed and increase with increasing gas flowrate. The collision rate increased with both stirring speed and gas flowrate. The parametric results show that there is a correlation between the bubble surface area flux Sb which is affected by stirring speed and gas flowrate, and the particle–bubble collision rate. With the collision rate as an indication of flotation collection, it is also possible to show that cell performance can improve more by increasing stirring speed than by increasing gas flowrate in a situation where everything else remains constant. The CFD results can form the basis for a Response Surface Method (RSM) analysis which can then be used for automated optimization of cell performance. Rock mass classification systems are extensively used in rock engineering design work, and mine design is no exception. Among the systems most widely used for mining-related design work are the NGI 0-system (Barton et al., 1974), the RMR system (Bieniawski, 1976), the MRMR system (Laubscher and Taylor, 1976) and, more recently, the GSI system (Hoek et al., 1998). Classifying the rock mass is widely seen as being the fieldwork required to characterize the rock mass and enable the application of empirical design methods associated with the different classification systems. This paper argues that it is fundamentally important to recognize the distinction between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification. These two processes should, in most cases, be separated from each other. Rock mass characterization should be used to determine the intrinsic properties of the rock mass independently of the application; i.e. independent from the infrastructure to be designed, the size, shape, and orientation of the excavation(s) or pillar(s), etc. Rock mass characterization should also be compatible with most classification systems and empirical design methods to be used. Rock mass characterization is the background fieldwork required to perform rock mass classification and/or engineering design work. Rock mass classification is the subsequent step to the characterization, and an integral part of the design process. Parameters that vary according to the design, such as the relative orientation of geological structures compared to the opening or the mine-induced stresses, should be calculated as part of the rock mass classification and design process, rather than during the rock mass characterization process. The failure to distinguish between rock mass characterization and rock mass classification can lead to major design errors and poor results.

The Third International Conference on Coal Research was held in Sydney, Australia, in October 1976. The papers and proceedings of the Conference will be published in Australia on behalf of the International Committee for Coal Research in April 1977. The papers deal with the economics and practicability of coal conversion, coal winning, resources assessment, safety and dust, and coal and power generation, together with an appreciation of coal potential by the deputy chairman of the U.K. National Coal Board. The value of incentive payments in the mining industry by K. SMITH, A.R.S.M., B.Sc. (London) (Member) This paper reviews the history of incentive payments in the mining industry, and gives some indication of the magnitude of improvement that has been achieved by this means in the past. The objective is to promote a more general belief in the efficacy of these methods, and thus to encourage their wider and more effective application by mining engineers in general, and by the rising generation in particular. It is concluded, from a consideration of current productivity levels in the gold-mining industry (still South Africa's leading revenue earner), that further substantial improvement can be achieved by a better understanding of the time-tested principles of incentive payments.

In 1970 it was decided to build a large new plant at the Chingola Division of N.C.C.M., Ltd., to treat concentrator tailings and leach residues with a low copper content by a leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning process. In order to assist in the establishment of the design parameters for the new plant, and to study the interaction of this plant with the existing leach-electrowinning plant, mathematical models, formulated as linear programs, have been developed and used extensively. The paper outlines the metallurgy of the plants and describes briefly the way in which the models have been formulated and used. The formulation involved the use of separable programming to form the products of some variables.

This study was aimed at a comparison of the efectiveness of a new axial-flow type of mixer impeller (the Prochem design) with the traditional inclined-blade turbine. The intended application of the mixers was in carbon-in-pulp plants for the extraction of gold from cyanide-leached pulps. The first part of the project involved water and ion-exchange resin, and measurement of the power drawn by the various sizes of impeller to fully suspend the resin. The rate of reaction between the resin and the solution was measured as a function of the power input to the mixer. In the second part of the project, use was made of activated carbon, silver cyanide solutions, and ore pulps. The rate of absorption of silver from the solutions and pulps was determined, as well as the rate of attrition of the activated carbon caused by the various impellers in clear water. The Prochem design of axial-flow impeller was shown to fully suspend solids at only one-quarter of the power requireabyan inclined-blade turbine of similar size. The axial-flow pattern produced was responsible for the more uniform vertical concentration profile of suspended beads produced by the Prochem design. These measurements verified the observations of other researchers that the rate of reaction is not affected by the ;design of impeller provided that al the solids are fully suspended. The Prochem design of impeller therefore achieved the same reaction rate as the conventional turbine at a quarter of the power input. The atrition rates of activated carbon could be correlated, in terms of the energy absorbed, by the same equation for al the impellers. Higher concentrations of activated carbon increased the amount of carbon fines produced. These results emphasize the importance of designing mixers for minimum power consumption.

Ruhrkohle in West Germany evaluates and compares the net present values of long-term periods from its coal mines by a computer assisted long-term planning system. Two main parts of this system are computer programs for the prediction of: (a) mineable reserves and their distribution in longwall panels as a function of dependent geological variables; (b) daily outputs and costs of longwall panels as a function of dependent geo- logical, layout and operational variables. This paper describes the investigations, which ended in the above computer programs: ? the collection of information from past workings and their organization in databases; ? the statistical evaluation of the databases, and ? the resulting correlation formulas. The correlation formulas vary the mean dependent variables as a function of independent variables which can be indicated with high reliability for planning projects in the long run. The system thus serves the purpose of facilitating long-term planning and excluding biased individual judgement of local planning staffs.

Theoretical substantiation of leaching of clustered ultra-fine gold by the electro-photo activated cyanide and chloride solutions is given in the paper; and processes of activation of leach solution by electrolysis and photo-activation are described. Comparative experiments on electro-photo activated leaching of ultra-fine gold from refractory ores by cyanide and chloride solutions were carried out. The material for research is primary ore of the Pogromnoe deposit (Russian Federation, Trans-Baikal Territory). The ore is characterised by the minimum sulfide minerals and the organic carbon content. Gold in ores of this deposit is presented as mainly ultra-fine. Gold inclusions in quartz and silica-alumina minerals (metasomatic minerals) are ultra-fine. Sulfide minerals (2.5-3%) are presented in ore generally by pyrrhotine (gold content does not exceed 10 g/t). Standard cyanide technology provides 49.5% gold recovery. Photo-electro activated air saturated NaCN provides 69.9% gold recovery. Laboratory research of chloride-hypochlorite column leaching demonstrated that the electro-photo activated method provided 78.9 % gold recovery to pregnant leach solution. Chloride-hypochlorite photo-electro activated solution can provide higher level of gold recovery with shorter process duration (10 days) in comparison with cyanide (40 days). The final decision regarding the choice of leach solution has to be done on the basis of technical and economic calculations. In open pit mining, ore and waste are hauled outside of the excavation area by trucks that move along a system of ramps. The design of these ramps must be carefully addressed because they have to comply with geomechanical constraints to ensure the stability of the pit walls, provide access to the different levels and phases, but also maximise the value of the extracted ore and reduce the extraction of waste. Because an optimisation approach able to deal with the design of the full ramp system seems to be out of reach at the moment, this paper addresses the problem of designing one ramp providing access to a single pushback, which has been determined beforehand. The optimisation objective is therefore to find a ramp that gives access to one given potential volume, while minimising its impact on the economic value of the volume. Two versions of the problem are formalised. One version allows the extraction of ore and waste only if this extraction is necessary for the ramp system. This version somehow minimises the intrinsic value of the ramp system. In the second version, it is possible to extract more than is needed by the ramp system. For instance, this takes into account the possibility of attaining ore on the wall opposite to the ramp as soon as the ramp reaches its level. In the setting mentioned above, the contribution of this work is three-fold. First, the computational complexity of the two different versions of the problem is presented and discussed; in particular, they are shown to be NP-hard. Second, compact integer programs modelling these two versions are proposed. Third, an efficient GRASP algorithm able to cope with the large instances of the problem is proposed. To assess the proposed approaches, the models and algorithms are applied to real instances with an off-the-shelf solver, illustrating and discussing their potential and relevance for the two versions of the problem. They are also compared with other approaches from the literature in terms of value and resulting designs.

This paper discusses the concentrations of sulphides and total sulphur in widely spread regions around mine residue deposits, from which rain-water run-of can enter the Vaal River system. Analyses of borehole samples from several deposits are used to establish typical sulphur head grades. It is shown that a high percentage of al the oxidizable, and hence leachable and pollution-causing, sulphur has already been removed. When the residues were fresh, water that came from the deposits was highly polluted, but the dissolved solids from these residues are today of very minor significance. The data are supported by analyses of the drainage streams.

The gravity method is often applied in mining-related scenarios such as geological and mineral exploration, detecting subsurface cavities and voids (“receptacles”) that may become sinkholes, siting of surface structures, fault-mapping, and more. It is also widely applied in geotechnical engineering to map subsurface karst profiles and to detect subsurface cavities, such as can occur in open pit mines. While it is widely acknowledged that, compared with other available geophysical methods, this method is the most applicable to the karst profiling problem, survey geometries applied in the field are often far from optimal. The gravity surveying specifications prescribed in SANS 1936 omit some key requirements for optimal survey outcomes, and this paper is intended to fill those gaps. The authors have seen scopes of work that require only a few measurements over the footprint of a proposed structure, indicating a lack of understanding of the nature of the gravitational field. A single gravity measurement is subject to the camouflaging effects of several influences, many of which can be larger than the anomaly caused by the subsurface density variation itself. Papers in the body of literature show an awareness of the need to map the regional field so that it can be subtracted to unmask the residual gravity anomaly, but rarely do they examine how instrument sensitivity governs the size of detectable anomalies or discuss how a detailed terrain correction can be instrumental for isolating faint targets. This paper aims to explain how to apply the gravity method correctly to mining and geotechnical problems, specifically in the detection of subsurface cavities. It discusses various factors to assist with optimising the acquisition of gravity data and its processing so as to maximise the practical value of gravity surveys.

Ore quality is declining, and the current spirals in mineral sands extraction is deemed inadequate to efficiently extract the valuable minerals. A new spiral was developed, the 117HM with the aim to extract the total heavy minerals in the order of 4.0% - 6.0% and the economic heavy minerals in the range 1.0% - 2.2% from the feed. An important measurable in the gravity concentration of mineral sands is recovery. Recovery measures how effectively the separator has extracted the valuable mineral contained in the input stream. The number of turns on the spiral trough influences the residence time of the feed slurry. A further optimisation followed with the development of the twelve-turn 117HM spiral. Four more turns were added for better recovery. The paper quantifies the effect of residence time on recovery.
