The objective of this circular is threefold: First, to describe briefly the various modes of occurrence of sand and gravel. Second, to emphasize the need for adequate prospect¬ ing and exploration prior to the expenditure of funds for development and plant construction. Third, to describe various methods of prospecting and exploration and their application to the several modes of occurrence of sand and gravel. Sand and gravel may be found in nearly every county or township in the United States. Commercial deposits, however, are by no means so widespread. The introduction of concrete and the consequent impetus given to consumption of gravel and sand aggregates has seriously depleted deposits in some congested areas. Increasing re¬ strictions in the specification requirements for marketing sands and gravels have further narrowed the economic areas. On the other hand, the combination of increasing transportation costs and decreasing selling prices has forced the decentralization of gravel production. As a result smaller, intermittently operated, and widely scattered portable or semiportable unit plants have been encroaching on the territory formerly supplied from centrally located pits with large tr.atment plants. Generally speaking, the small portable plant can not produce any great variety of ma¬ terials to as exacting specifications nor as economically as the large permanent plant.

This publication describes development by the Bureau of Mines of a quality evaluation procedure for certifying the adequacy of production lots of Kroll process zirconium sponge the Bureau had produced for reactor applications. After the procedure was devised, the next step was to apply it in controlling the quality of one-half million pounds of zirconium sponge com-prising 259 production lots, called blends, originating at the Metallurgy Research Center of the Bureau at Albany, Oreg. The Bureau concluded that the evaluation method developed was adequate and that by this method the zirconium blends having impurity levels or other property values outside specification limits were differentiated and thus were diverted from nuclear energy end uses. The research was performed under contract for the Bureau of Ships, Department of the Navy, and for the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

"INTRODUCTION The orienting phases of the current investigation of cushioned blasting in the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines were indicated in a previous publication (5) 3/. Pertinent literature reviewed therein indicated a highly controversial field. This emphasized the need for experimental studies of many factors that affect the health and safety of miners and the efficiency of mining operations. Results of some orienting tests showed marked effects on practical hazards. Further, they emphasized the necessity and importance of the contemplated investigation. The scope and general plan of these practical inquiries into the safety of cushioned blasting were indicated.This investigation of cushioned blasting relates to the various means employed to reduce the intensity of application of energy from explosive actions in boreholes. It has been suggested (from p. 19 of reference that the divisions of this work would correspond to the salient hazards affected by cushioned blasting. These include the ignition hazard, hazards from poisonous gases, and other practical hazards in the blasting technique. The ignition hazard was resolved into two components of approximately equal weight. These include studies of effects upon (1) the incendivity of blown-out shots and upon (2) the occurrence of such shots. Experimental studies of effects on the incendivity of blown-out shots were first undertaken. Questions of the best procedure for making these evaluations have been adduced, and the interpre-tation and utilization of the results of gallery testing seemed to require detailed attention; some preliminary general considerations of such testing were therefore necessary."

In summer, when hot, moisture-laden air enters a coal mine in the region east of the Mississippi River, the moisture is likely to condense on the roof and ribs because the incoming air is cooled below its dew point upon contact with the roof, ribs, and floor of the mine passageways. When the roof and ribs become wet owing to this condensation they are said to "sweat." In many mines, as soon as this sweating begins, shale or slate roof that appears solid and strong in winter begins to cut and fall. For a long time most mining men believed (many still believe) that the roof trouble was due to this sweating. However, from observation of conditions in one mine the operators concluded that the trouble was caused by expansion and contraction of the roof due to changes of temperature. This opinion was confirmed by experiments at several mines in cooling the air as it entered the mines. Methods used in these mines for cooling the air are described in this circular. MINE A At mine A the roof gave considerable trouble in the summer, and it was observed that where a spray of water from a leaking dam kept the roof wet and at a uniform temperature no difficulty was experienced with the roof, although it had cut and fallen on either side of that point. From this fact the company officials concluded that changes of temperature in the air rather than moisture caused the trouble and that if the incoming air were cooled to approximately normal strata temperature much of the additional roof trouble experienced during the summer would be overcome.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of potash from 68 mines and deposits in 12 market economy countries (MEC's) containing, at the demonstrated resource level, approximately 11.7 billion metric tons (mt) of potash in assay terms of contained K2O; K2O as used by industry as a standard of comparison for the different forms of potash. These resources include almost 190 million mt in the United States, 9.63 billion mt in Canada, approximately 430 million mt in Western Europe (France, Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom), 1.24 billion mt in the Middle East (Israel and Jordan) and over 220 million mt in other countries (Brazil, Chile, and the Congo). This analysis his determined that future production of potash in MEC?s will most likely continue to be from the large resources associated with producing operations in Canada. Based solely on the demonstrated resources included in this study, potash mining in the United States would decline while overseas production from MEC's can continue into the next century at near current production levels. However, timely development of new or inferred resources would offset any such decline. Producing mines in Canada have the resources to increase and maintain increased production well into the next century. For U.S. potash users, Canada is a long-term stable and secure source.

This report summarizes the results of an investigation of geologic factors that contribute to roof quality in underground mines in the Pocahontas #3 coal bed in southern West Virginia and southwestern Virginia. The investigation consisted of three phases, the first of which was selecting for detailed study five mines which represented the range of roof conditions, mining practices and geologic phenomena. This was accomplished by a statistical analysis of questionnaire data from 35 mines. The second phase consisted of detailed mapping in a "good" and a "bad" top area in each of the five selected mines and resulted in a qualitative assessment of geologic factors contributing to roof £alls. In the third phase, five mines were selected in which most non-geologic factors believed to contribute to roof falls were relatively constant but displayed a wide variety of geologic characteristics. Data from these mines were analyzed to test the qualitative assessments from Phase II. The primary result of this investigation is that slickensides arising from different geologic causes are the major geologic features leading to roof falls. These slicken-sides are found in ancient slump deposits, fire clays and sandy fire clays and channel contacts. Falls also occur where thick sandstone bodies directly over-lying the coal contain abundant shale or ironstone pebbles and coaly strips. The best top material is a sequence which consists of shale grading upward to sandy shale and sandstone within 30 feet of the top of the coal. Thick sand-stone units (301) without pebbles also provide good top.

In the commercial evaluation of coal tars, a distillation analysis properly carried out is of considerable importance. Close attention must be given to this operation in order to obtain consistent results and to secure the minimum decomposition of the tar compounds, which in many cases are sensitive to undue heat effects. Low-temperature tars in particular contain compounds of this nature, while in the case of tars produced at high temperatures the large proportion of pitch present has an adverse influence during a distillation. If excessive cracking takes place, the composition of the distillate will naturally vary from the normal, with the result that all the analytical criteria subsequently obtained are affected. Where tars, produced over vide ranges of carbonization temperatures are investigated as in the survey of gas, coke, and by-product making properties of American coals nor being conducted at the United States Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Experiment Station, the method of distillation must necessarily be the sane for all of the tars studied. Also, it must function equally well for both low and high temperature tar, permit accurate fractionation, and reduce adventitious decomposition to a minimum.

In April 1948, the Bureau of Mines was requested to evaluate the graphite deposit' known as the Benjamin Franklin and Just mines in Chester County, Pa. After preliminary investigation, it was recommended that the Bureau core-drill, trench, and sample the deposit and make beneficiation tests on the ore. During the first and second World Wars, flake graphite was in short supply, and a number of deposits in the United States were exploited. In 1942, the Defense Plant Corporation, through its lessee, the Benjamin Franklin Graphite Co., purchased 70.263 acres of graphite-bearing land and built a complete mining and milling plant with a capacity of 300 tons of crude ore per 24-hour day at a cost of $426,250 (Plancor No. 1254).

"Helium has great value to the oil and as industry as a tracer gas, according to tests just completed in the Elk Hills Field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, Kearn County, California. When used as .a tracer gas, small percentages of helium are mixed with natural gas pumped into a reservoir for conservation, repressuring, or cycling purposes. Because minute quantities of helium added to natural gases can be detected by analytical methods and accurately determined, the variations of the helium content of gas withdrawn from various parts of a field when helium has been added to the injected gas give interesting and long-sought data on the movement of injected gas through reservoirs.The Bureau of Mines engineers began their studies of the use of helium as a tracer material in gas-injection operations in the Elk Hills, California, oil field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, in response to a request by the Navy Department for assistance in connection with an expanded oil-production program instituted in that field. This report discusses the Bureau's work on the problem of determining the direction and extent of migration of injected gas in the Elk Hills reservoir by the use of helium as a tracer gas,The Bureau appreciates the cooperation and assistance of Commodore W. G. Greenman, U.S.N., director, and Commander R. Walling, U.S.N.R., Assistant director, Naval Petroleum .and Oil Shale Reserves, Washington, D. C., Captain H. P. This report on the physical and chemical properties of crude oils of California is one of a series on the producing districts of the United States. It includes a short discussion of results, tabulated data, and individual analyses of California crudes. Analyses of crude oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties have been published in Serials 25952 and 26083. The analyses reported in this paper corer samples that were obtained subsequent to the publication of Serials 2535 and 2608. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting of samples was facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California.

The Bureau of Mines since its establishment has always taken an active interest in the utilization of lignite and in the development of the lignite dep'osits of the United States. Extensive lignite fields occur in the west central States, notably in North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Texas; there are smaller areas in several other States, some of which are widely separated. The total area of the deposits and the total amount of lignite in these several districts are so enormous that the economic value is seldom recognized. To the people of ·the west and west central regions, however, the larger utilization of lignite, in whatever form it may be, is of fundamental importance, and any new methods or uses that promise to open these great lignite fields for more general and more efficient use deserve careful study. Although these lignite deposits underlie areas of thousands of square miles, their development and general utilization has been rather slow. This is no doubt partly because many of the districts are not thickly settled or highly developed in manufacturing industries, but is largely because lignites, from their peculiar physical and chemical characteristics, are low-grade fuels. Most of the lignites in these areas are imperfectly developed coals; many have a more or less woody structure; some belong to the brown-coal type; and others are darker, denser, and more homogeneous, approaching subbituminous coal. The people living in the regions in which these vast deposits occur, especially in the west central part of the United States, are vitally interested in every effort toward bettering lignite as fuel and aiding its wider utilization.

1. The investigation shows that there are two coal beds of major importance in Perry County from the standpoint of present production -Flag and Fire Clay -and two beds of minor importance -Haddix and Hindman. The Flag and Fire Clay beds contain the largest remaining known reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 840 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 720 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, these should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The Bureau of Mines used several laboratory batch flotation schemes combined with magnetic separation to investigate the feasibility of recovering potash feldspar and glass sands from molybdenite tailings. Four molybdenite tailings or prospective tailings were used as test samples. Feldspar concentrates containing from 10.7 pct to 12.0 pct K2O were recovered from three of the four samples. The alkali content of the fourth sample met the grade for a mixed feldspar. All the feldspar concentrates contained iron in excess of the 0.10-pct-Fe203 specification for most uses. Electron-beam microprobe examination of the feldspar concentrates showed the presence of an iron-bearing potash feldspar in quantities that were excessive with respect to most iron specifications. However, a high-quality glass sand was produced from all of the samples.

According to the Bureau of Mines annual survey, there were 318 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total daily crude throughput capacity of 8,632,390 barrels as of January 1, 1956. Compared with the previous year the total number of refineries declined 8 while the crude throughput capacity increased 211,760 barrels daily. Three refinery districts accounted for 90 percent of the crude-oil capacity increase, the California district 34 percent; the Texas Gulf Coast district, 31 percent; and the Indiana-Illinois-Kentucky district, 25 percent. Decreases in capacity during the year were reported for the East Coast, Appalachian #1, and the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland districts. The capacity of the average refinery to process crude oil increased during 1955 from 25.830 barrels daily to 27,145.

Manufacture of high-grade ferromanganese; as a rule; requires a low-phosphorus-manganese ore with 45 to 55 percent Mn, chiefly obtained in the Soviet Union, the British Dominions, and Brazil. Also, low-manganese ores have already been used for ferromanganese production, especially in North America .and Germany. During World War I, a process was developed in which a high-phosphorus ferromanganese or spiegeleisen was prepared in the blast furnace from law- or high-phosphorus manganiferous ores, then low-phosphorus manganese slag was prepared by refining under an acid slag, and this material was, worked into a low-phosphorus ferromanganese in the blast furnace.9/ Manufacture of useful manganese ores from a phosphorus-bearing spiegel with 12 to. 15 percent Mn, 4.5 percent C,, and 0.5 percent P by slagging in a refining furnace was reported by Joseph, Barrett, and Wood.10/ The spiegel was refined to 0.75 percent Mn, 3.4 percent C, and 0.45 percent P. Thereby, a slag with about 43 to 58 percent Mn and, about 10 percent Si02, was obtained. Hotter melts gave a smaller phosphorus content in the slag than cold melts. In addition, the phosphorus content of the slag varied with the manganese content of the intermediate metal.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. The properties of the Colorado Copper Co. in Sinbad Valley, Mesa and Montrose Counties, Colo., were rehabilitated and sampled by the Bureau of Mines in October, November, and December 1942. The several deposits were reexamined in March and April 1945 to obtain information disclosed by company work after December 1942. The development program included surface trenching, rehabilitation of several edits, and channel sampling of the exposures. Assay determinations wore made on 204 samples from the surface and underground workings. The results are given in the appendix. Several copper deposits in the Sinbad Valley area are similar in origin. The host rocks are sedimentary and mice in age from Pennsylvanian to Cretaceous. The Colorado No. 3 deposit occurs in the Cutler formation, which consists of many small lenses of conglomerate, sandstone, and shale. Mineralization is closely associated with faulting. On the Pyramid group the enrichment occurs in a zone of fracturing and jointing end also spreads into the adjoining sandstone. The ore deposition on the Copper Rivet claim is associated with a fault zone and is confined to en area above the contact of the Dolores-Wingate formations. Mineral deposits on the Sinbad claims occur at intersections of faults with blue-gray Pennsylvania limestone. Copper enrichment occurs along faults and as replacement of the surrounding limestone. Metallurgical tests indicate that ores from the Colorado No. 3 and Pyramid claims can be treated successfully by leaching with sulfuric acid. This method cannot be applied to ores from the Copper Rivet or Sinbad deposits because of high calcite content. Flotation tests at Boulder City, Nev., showed a recovery of less than 60 percent with a 14.24 percent copper concentrate.

This report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines is one of a series of such reports. It presents compilations of' inspection data furnished on their products by 15 manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on 68 samples of these gasolines. Data are presented for 18 samples of grade 80, 20 of grade 91/98, 21 of grade100/130, and 9 of grade 115/145 aviation fuels. The gasolines are designated January 1948 production, although some of the samples actually were produced at a later date.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the significant, presently producing coalbeds in Mercer County, W. Va. Approximately 650,000 tons of coal was produced in Mercer County, W. Va., in 1960, of which over 630,000 tons was cleaned in four preparation plants. In 1960 the Pocahontas Nos. 3, 6, and 11 coalbeds supplied 99.5 percent of the total coal mined in the county. Because the number of working mines In this county was small, only six samples were collected; four of which were of metallurgical quality as mined. The remaining two samples could be upgraded by washing at suitable specific gravities. Many of the samples taken were of metallurgical quality as mined; however, the float-and-sink analysis on these coals has been included to point out their amenability to the production of premium quality, special purpose coals. In general the coals were low-volatile bituminous in rank with low ash and sulfur contents.
