A job analysis is a written list of the tasks associated with doing a particular job. In drilling, describing the steps associated with adding rod to the drill steel would be an example of a task associated with the job. How to hammer casing or fish a lost drill bit out of a hole would also be job tasks. Develop a written list of job tasks. Ask drillers in your company if the tasks listed are correct and accurately reflect how to perform the job. While each driller may do the job a little differently, some tried?and?true methods are required to perform certain tasks safely and correctly. You may find a separate analysis is needed for different drilling jobs (e.g., a residential well or a monitoring well). Also remember to include the tasks of both the helper and the driller.

The productive potential of the Nation's principal active and inactive silver mining districts has been evaluated, using 1964 economic conditions and assumed silver prices ranging up to $3 per ounce. On this basis, the United States has an estimated 5 billion ounces of unmined silver, excluding minor byproduct silver in gold deposits. Approximately 3.5 billion ounces are contained in deposits requiring higher silver prices to be economically minable, and about 1.3 billion ounces are in currently operating mines. An analysis of silver consumption trends since 1954 indicates that the free world industrial market will climb to nearly 800 million ounces annually by 1985. U.S. industrial silver consumption has been projected to increase at an annual rate of 4 percent from 1965 to 1985. Average annual increase for the remainder of the free world has been 8.1 percent since 1953; this is expected to level off with an estimated average increase of 5 percent to 1975 and 4 percent from 1976 to 1985. Foreign silver production has, in the past, exceeded consumption, but in 1960 the supply deficit was over 100 million ounces. U.S. production, also traditionally exceeding demand, was suddenly overtaken at the start of World War II. By 1964 the annual deficit, excluding coinage, was over 84 million ounces. World coinage requirements of silver are fast declining and expected to total only 25 million ounces annually by 1985. In fact, coins are already becoming major short-term source of silver to fill the large deficit between industrial demand and current production. The larger, long-term deficit (to 1985, the limit of this study) must be balanced by silver from the hoards and new production from silver deposits. Eventually all of the deficit must be met by new production or silver prices will rise until consumption is greatly curtailed. To balance free world supply and demand, it is estimated that the free world must produce an additional 85 million ounces by 1975 and 375 million ounces by 1985. The estimated proportion expected from U.S. deposits is 17 million ounces by 1975 and 74 million ounces by 1985.

The purpose of this investigation was to extend the analytical services which are required for Bureau of Mines programs in developing and evaluating high-purity materials. Determination of trace elements in minerals and ores as an aid in geochemical evaluation and prospecting was considered. Serious consideration should be given to the merits of using the avail- able fluorescent X-ray spectrographic instrumentation and techniques for determining trace elements. Limits of detectability for trace elements in metal, oxide, solution or mineral samples range from 0.1 to 100 p.p.m, depending on the element being determined, overall sample composition, and the complexity of the X-ray spectra; limits of detectability range from 0.01 to 1 microgram for elements that have been preconcentrated by a chemical or physical process, for example, by ion-exchange membrane.

The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on coal dust explosion suppression. The investigation took place on a beltway in the double-entry of the Bureau's Experimental Mine. Using conditions that simulate those in a working mine, the investigation showed that a coal dust explosion can be readily initiated in a conveyor belt entry. Also, the explosion can spread into adjacent entries through opened crosscuts (stopping destroyed by explosion) to propagate for long distances even though the adjacent entries are rock dusted in compliance with regulations. Passive water barriers (water-filled tubs) were found to be effective in suppressing explosions on a beltway; however, barrier efficiency was reduced by opened crosscuts. The study indicated that the beltway barrier should be the distributed type consisting of continuous rows of water-filled tubs covering long distances along the entry. A plan is outlined for the installation of a water barrier system in a working coal mine for the protection of a beltway.

As part of a study on high-temperature ceramic materials, the ammonium sulfate, carbonate, nitrate, oxalate, and sulfate salts of yttrium, lanthanum, and cerium were analyzed thermogravimetrically. The temperature ranged from room temperature to 1,500° C. Each salt was decomposed by heating at a rate of 2.5° C. per minute, and some of the salts were subjected to additional rates of 5° C. per minute or 10° C. per minute. The decomposition sequences have been identified, and the temperatures of formation of intermediate compounds and of the oxides have been determined. The minimum oxide formation temperature of a given lanthanum salt exceeds that for the similar salt of yttrium, and both exceed that for the same salt of cerium except for one cerium carbonate. Variation of the heating rate indicates a thermal lag in the materials and produces the shift of formation temperatures to higher values and loss of resolution in the weight-loss distribution as the heating rate increases.

Synopsis U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accidents statistics have identified ore-pass hazards as a significant safety problem in U.S. underground metal mines. The statistics show that nearly 75% of injuries are directly or indirectly related to pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes, the use of hand tools in ore passes, fails of broken rock in ore passes and structural failures of chutes or gates and ore-pass walls. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines. Risk assessment methods, such as fault-tree analysis, have been employed to identify the most probable causes of orepass failures, define research priorities and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning and unsafe ore passes. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in a laboratory setting with the use of a reduced-scale orepass mock-up. Field tests are being initiated in mine ore passes to determine static and dynamic loads. Data from the test ore passes are being compared with data from the mine to characterize true system behaviour. Computer modelling with the use of closed-form solutions, finite-element analyses and a newly developed particle flow code predicts static and dynamic leads from the flow and the impact of ore and waste in the ore pass. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts from ore and waste rock might be considerably greater than expected. The total static load is substantially less than is typically used fur the structural design of chute and gate support members. It is suggested that damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics have a significant effect on particle flow and resulting impact loads. This is being verified with the use of results from laboratory tests, field tests and particle flow analyses. Ore passes are vertical or steeply inclined openings in a rock mass through which ore and waste are transported and where they mar also be stored. A typical underground mining system is shown in Fig. 1. The arrows indicate the locations of ore passes and loading pockets and their relative configurations. The control of material flow is potentially one of the most hazardous operations in underground mining. According to MSHA data. most of the ore pass-related accidents in the U.S.A. are associated with the loading-unloading cycle and removal of blockages from ore passes. In particular, attempts to free ore hang-ups have resulted in multiple fatalities. The hazards are obvious; there is uncertainty as to when the ore will break loose and miners are unable to escape falling rock to a safe location. Although ore passes and chutes and gate systems for underground metal and non-metal mines roust meet the requirements specified in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Parts 57 and 75, recent structural failures of ore-pass linings and gates have underlined the lack of adequate ore-pass design standards available to both MSHA enforcement staff and mine engineers. Because of the importance of an ore pass to the safe operation of a mine design criteria need to be assessed and new guidelines developed. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the Nationals Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating hazards in and around ore passes in hard rock mines and studying design criteria for ore passes. "INTRODUCTION The Bankhead mine of the Cane Creek Coal Mining Co. is in the central part of Walker County, Ala., 4 miles south of Jasper. The Mary Lee bed in this part of the State yields a practically free-burning coal which is marketed as a. steam-raising and domestic fuel. As mined, the coal ordinarily contains ash-forming impurities to an extent that makes it necessary to treat the coal by some washing process before it is marketed. At present the Bank-head coal coarser than 3-1/2 inch is hand-picked and the coal finer than 3-1/2 inch is washed in two single-compartment jigsThis paper contains the result of screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests on a representative sample of the run-of-mine coal and the results of tests made to show the amount of coal liberated from impurities by crushing the coarser sizes. .This report is one of a series on the washability of Alabama coals which is being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the coal producers of Alabama.SAMPLING AT THE MINE'The Mary Lee bed at Bankhead consists of two benches separated by a rock parting which varies in thickness from place to place in the mine. The top bench has a very uniform thick-nest; throughout the workings and yields about 65.0 per cent of the output. The bottom bench varies greatly in thickness and in nary places becomes too thin to work at a. profit. The sample for the washability study was taken underground at a place which was typical of the mine as a whole. In taking the sample the working face was squared up and a representative section out from each bench. Care was taken to secure a, quantity of coal from each bench proportional to the quantity contributed to the mine output. The rock parting as gobbed in accordance with the usual mining practice. The total sample taken weighed 3 tons."

"INTRODUCTION Red-iron-ore deposits in northeast Alabama have been exploited at vari¬ous times for nearly 6o years. About 3-1/2 million tons of ore have been produced in the Gadsden district; but mining activity has been dormant since 1926, and furnaces within this section of the State now suffer a shortage of red ore.To alleviate these shortages, work by-the Bureau of Mines was recommended after preliminary investigations. 4/5/ Diamond drilling, to determine the lateral and vertical extent of ores of known deposits in Greasy Cove and on Shinbone Ridge, was done from August 1946 to May 1947, as Project 9-106, Alabama Red Iron Ore. Three holes were drilled in each area.ASKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of domestic mineral resources to the end that they- make the greatest possible contributions to the national security and economy. A joint effort by the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)3was undertaken to determine how well self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's), deployed in accordance with Federal regulations (30 CFR 75.1714), held up in the underground environment with regard to both physical damage and aging. This report presents findings regarding laboratory-tested SCSR's in the fifth phase of testing from mid-1993to early 1996. The SCSR's were tested on human subjects and on a breathing and metabolic simulator (BMS) at PRC. These results indicate that most of the apparatus, if they pass their inspection criteria, perform satisfactorily.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed ultrasonic measurement instrumentation capable of measuring strains and elongations on tensioned and untensioned mine roof bolting systems. This report evaluates the pulsed-phase-lock-loop and pulse-echo systems. The pulse-echo systems measure time of flight of a signal through the bolt. The ultrasonic instrument converts the measurement into elongations or stress. The most recent Bureau instrument development converts travel-time measurements directly into elongation, load, stress, and torque by simple data manipulation from the keyboard. Bolt preparation and instrument calibration are described in detail.

An examination of 60 mines, 11 illumination hardware manufacturers, and Q mobile face-equipment manufacturers was conducted to determine the state of the art of mine-illumination hardware, define lighting system installation and maintenance problems, and assess personnel acceptance of lighting. Longwall and mobile face-machine illumination were studied. Major problems on room and pillar installations include damage of exposed components, electrical failures, and reduced lamp life, with extreme variability in the degree of these problems. Most longwall systems had low or moderate maintenance requirements, cable damage being the most significant problem. Most mobile face-equipment operators liked their machines' lighting systems, but many complained of glare and other problems. Longwall lighting was unanimously accepted by face personnel, and most complaints were minor. Based on the survey, general installation and maintenance guidelines have been established, addressing hardware design aspects, approaches proved effective to minimize problems, and improper practices noted which are detrimental to effective lighting.

This report describes in detail three waterflooding projects and a pres-sure-maintenance project in Butler and Cowley Counties, Kans., that will be visited on the 1963 annual spring tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the flooding of five oil-producing horizons separately with injection water furnished by two water treating plants. Discussion of the individual projects includes information on their early history, the source and treatment of the injection fluids, oil production decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.

To provide insights and assistances for the optimization of ventilation systems for U. S. under-ground coal mines facing both methane control and spontaneous combustion issues, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study is being conducted to investigate the effect of the ventilation scheme on the prevention of spontaneous combustion in longwall gob areas. This report focuses on the flow patterns within the gob under three different ventilation systems; one-entry and two-entry bleederless systems as well as a three-entry bleeder system. The gas flow in the caved gob area is simulated as a laminar flow through porous media while the gas flow in ventilation airways is simulated as a fully developed turbulent flow. The air flow patterns are visualized using flow path lines. Air velocity contours and vector data are also obtained. The possible location of critical velocity zones where the gob is most liable to spontaneous heating is discussed.

The rapid determination of uranium in ores by radiometric means was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Among the various procedures and schemes tested, two showed most promise. They were the ratio scheme developed in the Bureau's Tucson, Ariz., laboratory and the equilibrium method developed by the Canadian Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. The ratio method is a simple, empirical procedure for classifying the state of equilibrium in ores by measuring their radioactivity by means of a Geiger-Muller counter under three different conditions, using filters. The principal merit of the method is in providing a clue as to the reliability of equivalent uranium determinations.

Introduction MINING IS THE BRANCH OF INDUSTRY involving the exploration and removal of minerals from the earth (figure 1). Mining is one of the oldest and most important endeavors of humankind, because it provides the raw ingredients for most of the material world around us and, like agriculture, is the lifeblood of civilization. The main objective of any type of mining is to remove the valuable material economically and safely with minimum damage to the surrounding environment. The Earth has many natural resources on which we depend that must be mined. Coal, oil, gas, and other mineral fuels are used for heating electricity, and numerous industrial processes. Nonfuel minerals such as iron ore, precious metals, and industrial metals, and nonmetallic materials like sodium and potassium are used in chemical and agricultural applications. Even crushed stone used in road building and other construction projects must be mined. Mining affects our standard of living and impacts almost everything we do. A myriad of items that we use in our homes and offices and for transportation, communications, and national defense all require minerals (figure 2). For example, more than 30 different minerals are needed to make a television or telephone! Table 1 lists several commonly mined materials and some of the end uses in our daily lives.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, did a linear analysis for a new underground coal mine in Grant County, WV, through the interpretation of LANDSAT imagery and high-altitude, color-infrared aerial photography, to identify areas of potentially unstable roof in advance of mining. The Bureau of Mines included this mine in its ongoing study of the correlation between geologic features and linears. Three years after the analysis, after mining had progressed through the plotted linears, a cooperative Bureau-MSHA study evaluated the effectiveness of the linear plot in predicting areas of unstable roof and defined the geology associated with the linears. Adverse roof conditions at this mine include roof falls, potted-out roof, water inflow, and local areas requiring supplemental support. At the time of this study, 34 pct of the mine workings were within 200 ft of a plotted linear. Fifty percent of the adverse roof area in the mine occurred within this area. The primary geologic anomaly associated with the linears is an increased frequency of jointing. The majority of the plotted linears coincide with the prominent joint orientations. Additional features observed in the linear zones include roof rolls and a sandstone channel that cuts into the coal seam.
