This two volume report addresses slope stability of surface mine spoils within the Interior Coal Province. Sixteen (16) mines were visited, pertinent data and samples collected, and reported spoil instabilities back-analyzed. Laboratory test results are compared to back-analyzed material properties. Available methods of slope stability analysis are reviewed and evaluated with respect to application to mine spoil stability evaluation and prediction. Correlation and tentative relationships among spoil material properties, highwall conditions, mining equipment and procedures and empirical observations are presented. Slope stability sensitivity plots illustrate the relative significance of various input parameters on stability. Slope stability input parameters are correlated with site and mining conditions to identify the primary factors controlling spoil stability. Investigative methods, spoil stability enhancement techniques, spoil stability prediction procedures and future study areas are discussed. Appendices include a glossary of terms, annotated bibliography, details of mine visits, and detailed laboratory test procedures and results.

"INTRODUCTION The Buck. Creek corundum area of Clay County, North Carolina, includes one of the largest single masses of peridotite outcrops in the whole Appalachian Range and has been described by Pratt, an early authority on corundum, as offering one of the best potentialities for corundum production in North Carolina.Two principal types of corundum deposits are found at Buck Creek the vein type and the corundum-bearing amphibolite dikes.The vein deposits occur in structural fissures that strike north to northeast in a gangue of feldspar, zoisite, an, chlorite. The corundum is generally coarse-grained and good-quality. The corundum content varies from several percent to 50 percent.The corundum in the amphibolites is more or less disseminated through the dike, is generally lower-grade, and is less in quantity, than the vein corundum. About 50 percent of the amphibolite corundum is coarse enough for snagging-wheel grade but is difficult to separate from the amphibolite.Production from the Buck Creek area has been small and came mainly from high-grade pocket in the vein deposits. Pratt 3/ reports 300 tons of corundum ore was produced to about 1896. No record of subsequent production is available.The critical shortage of corundum during the war, due to transportation difficulties and the depletion of deposits abroad, prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate domestic reserves.After a favorable report was obtained on the Buck Creek area, the Bureau began exploration of the deposit in September 1943 and continued until February 1945."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health investigated how the starting of induction motors may cause nuisance tripping of short-circuit protection on coal mine power systems. This research had a dual purpose: 1) to identify how motor-start waveforms differ from those for short circuits and 2) to devise a method to provide short-circuit protection without intentional time delays to account for motor starts. This technology will help ensure that surface temperatures of energized electrical apparatus will not exceed gas or dust ignition thresholds when short circuits occur.

THIS bulletin presents all analytical and lest methods regularly used by Bureau of Mines laboratories for characterizing coal and coke. To provide better service to coal producers and consumers, the scope of this bulletin has been expanded to include important test methods used to evaluate coal properties for commercial processing. The methods described will prove valuable to all persons interested in analyzing and testing coal and coke.

This report describes the development of an electronic system which detects unsafe slack and overload conditions in underground mine hoist ropes. The Slack and Overload Rope Protection System (SORPS) includes a fail-safe load cell inserted between the rope and the conveyance, and an accelerometer mounted on the conveyance. Signals from these transducers are telemetered via a radio link to the hoist control room, where they are combined with drum speed and chair status in a microprocessor-based decision and display unit. Abnormally high external force levels are detected as discrepancies between rope tension and cage acceleration; conveyance weight is inferred continuously. Hazardous conditions are displayed to the hoist operator, along with general hoist status. The system has been tested in a working mine for approximately two years. The report contains specifications, design data and field test experience generated under the SORPS program. It also includes information on dynamic modeling, vibration environment, the status of existing slack detection systems, and applicable control strategies.

"IntroductionThe combined library facilities of the five universities in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust, The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University, represent one of the most extensive and comprehensive collections of information on respirable dust research which is available in the United States. The Center encompasses two major medical schools, the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at The Pennsylvania State University and .West Virginia University Hospital at West Virginia University, and includes national and international experts from such diverse disciplines as geology, geomechanics, mining engineering, mineral processing, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, material science, physics and several areas of medicine. In order to maximize achievements in research and facilitate early results application in the private industry, university, government and public sectors, a geographically dispersed Reference Center on Respirable Dust has been established at each of the affiliated universities. This network serves to encourage unity between the universities in the Center and coordination and communication with other entities who benefit from their research.Description of the Reference CenterIn this light, the goal of the Reference Center network is to identify at what location Information is available and to provide a means for others to access this information. It is especially necessary to have both ease of input and maximum retrieval capabilities available to all the research personnel in the Reference Center. At the same time, the service provided to the inquiring public must be complete and cost-effective. The Center's approach to realizing this goal incorporates advances in computerized and electronic searching of individual library holdings and the networking of major library and commercial search systems.The Reference Center uses the following means to achieve this goal. At each participating university, a hard copy collection ls maintained of the current respirable dust research in progress by that institution's personnel. Also, available. at each university ls a review of their past and present research on respirable dust. At each participating university a hard copy collection of annual status reports and of all publications produced by Center personnel for symposiums, national and international conferences ls maintained. A key word computer search capability ls available to participating universities. This computer search, by title, author and location, allows researchers to determine at which facility information is available, thus avoiding the tremendous expense and effort of housing all the information on respirable dust research under one roof. The Reference Center has access, through The Pennsylvania State University Libraries system and the libraries of other institutions, to a large number of data bases such as MEDLINE at the National Library of Medicine,"

"INTRODUCTION Sponge iron has been made commercially since 1912 at a Swedish ceramic plant; and the product, known as Swedish disk-type nagger sponge iron, has an excellent reputation as a superior furnace feed wherever high-grade steels are made.The general procedure for making brickyard sponge iron was described frequent in Swedish technical journals before 1932 and at that time consisted in filling clay refractory containers, called saggers, with iron ore plus the necessary quantity of solid reducing agent and then firing in an ordinary ceramic kiln. Two types of sponge iron were made in this way: (1) An inferior, high-sulfur product obtained by mixing the ore and solid reducing agent; and (2) a high-grade, low-sulfur product made by filling the sagger with alternete layers of unmixed ore and reducer, yielding sintered disks of metallic iron particles.Swedish disk-type sponge iron of interest to the steel industry because it has a very low sulfur content, even when made by the use of low-grade, high-sulfur coals for reducing and firing. The Swedish product also contains little siliceous gangue residue and is almost phos¬phorus-free. To those features must be added the high metallic-iron content -90 to 96 percent - and freedom from even small amounts of the metals that are undesirable in steel making.The details essential for successful operation of this procedure are not known, especially as regards improvements said to have been made since 19;2. The Bureau of Mines therefore decided to determine some of these missing details, and this report records the results of the first set of experiments on the manufacture of brickyard or sagger sponge iron."

"INTRODUCTION For a number of years, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests on various types of structures to ascertain the effect of seismic vibrations emanating from quarry blasting in an effort to determine an index of damage. Associat¬ed with these tests, occasional records were made of the characteristics of the air blast or concussion from the explosions. Although the importance of the air-blast problem was recognized, the equipment was not designed for airblast measurements, nor was the early research program concerned with the problem. After the ground-vibration tests had been completed, attention was turned to study of the air blast and its effect. The program was modified, however, in certain aspects by the imminence of war and the final entry of the United States into the conflict. These modifications were made to supply information pertaining to military and civilian defense problems.Detailed discussion of these problems is beyond the scope of this report, which attempts to present preliminary results of factual and fundamental character. However, it may be noted that airblast data are urgently needed for intelligent design of both Government and non-Government buildings, which must withstand the air blast from bombs and afford maximum protection for the occupants. The safety of vital equipment above and below ground necessitates consideration of damage from air blast. Protection against use of dynamite by saboteurs, moreover, hinges largely on the effect of air blast. Identification of a planned ""accident"" involving dynamite often entails knowledge of the characteristics and power of the airblast.The peacetime problem of damage from air blast resulting from quarry and mining blasting activities is of course exaggerated by the wartime requirements of increased production accelerated operation, and enlarged development."

These proceedings consist of an overview of the underground metal and nonmetal mina fire protection research currently being conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The following papers address the areas of prompt, reliable fire detection, fire planning and warning, fire suppression, and personnel protection. Selected topics are included here that cover fire protection systems for shafts, underground fueling areas, and mobile underground mining equipment; spontaneous combustion, improved stench, and product-of-combustion fire warning systems; computer-aided ventilation modeling; fire doors; and an investigation of fire hazards in mine timbers. The projects described provide a current documentation of problems being addressed.

As part of the Phase I study activity, a questionnaire was sent to a representative sampling of mining companies to obtain information on the uses, use conditions, personnel policies and other user concerns associated with front-end loaders. On-site visits to several of the mining companies were also parried out and the questionnaire was used during these visits as well. Five major areas were dealt with in the user questionnaire. These included: 1) Front-End Loader Critique - An open-ended form was employed to permit the mining companies to describe the particular things they liked and disliked about front-end loaders, in general, and/ or specific models in particular. 2) Usage - A form indicating the functions performed by front-end loaders and the numbers, makes and models of front-end loaders being used by mining companies. 3) Environment - A form where the user indicated the various types of conditions encountered in their use of front-end loaders. 4) Personnel - A form for describing factors pertaining to the qualifications of front-end loader operators. 5) Miscellaneous and Comments - A form permitting the user to comment on his feelings toward standardization of front-end loader operator stations.

Kroemer(1-3) and Kroemer et al.(4) define the isoinertial technique of strength assessment as one in which mass properties of an object are held constant, as in lifting a given weight over a predetermined distance. Several strength assessment procedures possess this characteristic. Most commonly associated with the term is a specific test developed to provide a relatively quick assessment of a subject's maximal lifting capacity using a modified weight-lifting device.(1,5) The classic psychophysical methodology of assessing maximum acceptable weights of lift is also considered an isoinertial technique under this definition.(6) While the definition provided by Kroemer(1) and Kroemer et al.(4) has been most widely accepted in the literature, some have applied the term "isoinertial" to techniques that differ somewhat from the preceding definition, such as in a description of the Isotechnologies B-200 strength testing device.(7) Rather than lifting a constant mass the B-200 applies a constant force against which the subject performs an exertion. The isoinertial tests described here apply to situations in which the mass to be moved by a musculoskeletal effort is set to a constant. Is Isoinertial Testing Psychophysical or Is Psychophysical Testing Isoinertial? As various types of strength tests have evolved over the past few decades, some unfortunate developments in terminology have arisen to describe and classify different strength assessment procedures. This is particularly evident in sorting out various tests that have been labeled "isoinertial." One example was cited earlier. Another problem that has evolved is that the term "isoinertial strength" has two connotations. The first is the conceptual definition: isoinertial strength tests include any strength test in which a constant mass is handled. In practice, however, the term is often used to denote a specific strength test in which subjects' maximal lifting capacity is determined using a machine and a constant mass is lifted.(1,5) Partially as a result of this dual connotation, the literature contains references to both "isoinertial strength test" as a psychophysical variant(8) and the psychophysical method as an "isoinertial strength test" (4,9) To lay the framework for the next two chapters, the authors will briefly discuss some operational definitions of tests of isoinertial and psychophysical strength. In stating that the isoinertial strength test is a variant of the psychophysical method, Ayoub and Mital(8) refer to the specific strength test developed by Kroemer(1) and McDaniel et al.(5) Clearly, this isoinertial protocol has many similarities to the psychophysical method: both are dynamic; weight is adjusted in both; and both measure the load a subject is willing to endure under specified circumstances. However, while both deal with lifting and adjusting loads, there are significant differences between the psychophysical (isoinertial) technique and the Kroemer-McDaniel (isoinertial) protocol in their procedures and the use of the data collected in these tests. In 2006, a total of 2,113 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Coal mines comprised 14.2% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.5% (n=1,955) and anthracite mines 7.5% (n=158) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 71.0% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (29.2%), West Virginia (21.8%), and Pennsylvania (20.3%).

COMBINED tonnage or natural abrasive materials sold or used in the United States in 1962 was 10 percent greater than that of 1961 and value was 9 percent higher. Production of crude artificial abrasives in the United States and Canada was up 14 percent in volume and 9 percent in value. Value of grinding-wheel sales increased 13 percent, and the value of coated-abrasives sales was up 10 percent. The value of imports and reexports declined, while the value or exports increased. [ ]

This Bureau of Mines report describes the history, characteristics, distribution, and mineral development potential of 21 lode gold deposits in or near the Chugach National Forest (CNF), AK. It includes findings from a 4-yr (1979 to 1982) mineral evaluation of the CNF conducted by the Bureau and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This evaluation, undertaken to provide the U.S. Forest Service with mineral resource data for use in making decisions on land use, included site-specific mapping and sampling of more than 200-lode gold deposits. The data presented here were compiled from the findings of this 4-yr evaluation and from existing literature. Fourteen of the 21 lode gold deposits described in this report contain a combined identified resource of 117,750 short tons (st) averaging 0.55 oz/st Au and 0.2 oz/st Ag. Two mineralized felsic dikes in the Summit Lake-Palmer Creek area contain a combined identified resource of 18 million st grading 0.02 oz/st Au and 0.16 oz/st Ag. Identified resources were not determined for the remaining five deposits because of a lack of information.

The Bureau of Mines has developed prototype instruments promising to improve the ability to warn of imminent roof falls. An unusually good opportunity to test these comparatively under natural caving conditions was afforded by the forecasted caving in August 1977 of a mined-out region of the White Pine Mine. The latter's rock strata closely resemble those in many coal mines. The anticipated cave was of the competent-roof/weak-pillar type. It occurred as, and when, predicted. Automated convergence and bed separation gages agreed well with the standard manual convergence gage measurements. A micro seismic gage was found to be insensitive to the fall and may require different test conditions for effectiveness. A roof resistivity unit was tested under a separate Bureau of Mines contract. (No. H02720J7). An unplanned addition showed interesting potential.

"In 1912 bauxite was discovered in the Andersonville district, which lies in the 28th and 29th land districts of Georgia and comprises parts of Sumter, Macon, and Schley Counties. Mining was begun in May 1914 by the Republic Mining & Manufacturing Co. Considerable ore has been produced in this region since that time by individual interests and by the American Cyanamid & Chemical Corp., which acquired the property formerly owned by the Republic Co.The area was examined in the fall of 1941 by representatives of the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey, after which a prospecting program was begun by the Bureau. Drilling was started on December 26, 1941, and continued until November 18, 1943. A total of 1,192 holes was drilled in the district, and 3,679 samples were taken and analyzed.Mineral exploration agreements were signed by 146 property owners covering 42,128 acres. Holes were drilled on 121 of these properties, which have a total area of 38,778 acres.Drilling under this project disclosed several new deposits, of which four have been completely delimited. Previous prospecting in this area by mining companies did not find bauxite, as it lies under heavy overburden. Work by the Bureau indicates 14,412,000 long tons of ore containing 30 percent or more alumina. The total tonnage is divided as follows:Georgia State Highway Routes 26 and 4-9 traverse the district. The Central of Georgia Railroad passes through the center of the entire district (see fig. 1).The project was initiated by J. R. Thoenen, supervising engineer, Non-metals Mining Section, Mining Division, Bureau of Mines. It was under his general supervision until July 1942, after which it was under the general supervision of E. J. Lintner and Rowe McCrae, district engineers for Georgia, South Carolina, and Flordia, respectively.John C. Feeley, Jr., was project engineer from December 1941 to April 1942. Other engineers who assisted in the work on the project are R. E. Babcock, T. M. Romslo, Don M. Coulter, and Walter T. Lewiecki.Acknowledgment is due the metallurgical staffs at College Park, Md., and Tuscaloosa, Ala., for analyses of samples and beneficiation tests.Acknowledgment is also expressed to Alfred D. Zapp, M. W. Harris, Elmer Kneedler,and Parke D. Mercury has been used by mankind since prehistoric times. It has been, and is now, widely used in industry and medicine and has unique properties which make direct substitution difficult or impossible. At present its prin- cipal uses are for electrical apparatus, control instruments, electrolytic soda preparation, mildew-proofing paints, pesticides, and medical and dental preparations. Deposits of mercury are less common than those of other base and precious metals, but some of the deposits are very large and have been ample to meet the world's past demands. The price of mercury has had many sharp fluctua- tions, but in general, the limited number of producers has resulted in a more stable price structure than that of many other commodities. The United States has been one of the main producers of mercury, and from 1850 to 1961 produced 3,247,704 flasks. Yearly production since World War II has varied from 4,535 to 38,067 flasks. An estimate of domestic resources of mercury producible at various price ranges was prepared for each mercury mine by combining specific knowledge of mercury mineralization with estimates of potential, based on geologic informa- tion and past production history. The sum of the individual estimates for each price range is shown in a table. A parallel estimate of nationwide production potential was made from a study of past price and production relationships. These were analyzed by plotting yearly production figures against the previous year's price, expressed in dollars of constant purchasing power. An equation was fitted to the data by mathematical means and was used to extend the curve into areas of higher than historic prices. Potential production rates at various price levels were taken from this graph. The estimated yearly production rates were used to make an estimate of total potential based on the premise that produc- tion rates and reserves have a proportionate relationship.

The purpose of this research is to identify hazards associated with roof bolting and to make recommendations for procedural and equipment design changes to reduce those hazards. To that end, the project reviewed Literature on related research, collected and analyzed roof bolting injury data, normalized the injury data be exposure time to each activity and identified problem areas within the root bolting tasks. In addition, field data collection forms were prepared and mines selected for field work. In the field, observations were made of eighty (80) different roof bolting crews bolting one hundred fifty-five (155) place;, on forty (40) sections spread among nine (9) mines. Task analysis forms were used to record unsafe behavior or conditions for each crew and each place. Informal discussions were held with the mine's safety and training officer, the maintenance officer, one section foremen and, when possible, the observed crew, concerning the training and experience of the miners. Unsafe acts were categorized and related to the "Activity While Injured" categories developed during the accident analysis. For each of these categories one or more recommendations for corrective measure, machine modification, procedural change or job training were developed. The study produced over fifty (50) specific recommendations involving machine design, procedural, safety training and supervisional issues that would lead to reduced roof bolter injuries in the near term. The authors concluded, however, that only the development of truly hands off/remote bolting can eliminate or reduce to an absolute minimum the hazards to which the roof bolter is subjected.

Brazil's gross domestic product (GDP) grew only slightly in 1988 to $277 billion at current prices.2 The growth rate was the smallest registered since 1983, when the rate was minus 2.8%. The economy's performance was strongly influenced by a 2% to 3% decrease in industrial production and civil construction. The mineral industry, however, countered the downward trend in the industrial sector and grew a modest 1.4%. In November, Brazil adopted a new Constitution that placed significant restrictions on foreign investment in the mineral industries. Under certain provisions of the new Constitution, foreign companies were prohibited from establishing new mining ventures in Brazil as sole or majority owners. They could now enter the mineral industry only as minority shareholders with Brazilian partners. Foreign companies already established in Brazil had a 4-year grace period to find majority Brazilian partners, or to establish vertically integrated processing operations (mining, processing, smelting, and refining). The new Constitution also prohibited foreign risk contracts for petroleum exploration.
