The market has become highly competitive for engineering and equipment vendors, who are challenged to reduce costs while improving efficiency and productivity of mine operations through plant improvements and expansions. Although conveyor transfer systems account for a small percentage of the infrastructure cost of a mine, they form an integral part of the process supply chain. Malfunctions or suboptimal performance can result in substantial financial cost from delayed start-up, unscheduled downtime, reduced throughput and increased maintenance costs.Discrete element modelling (DEM) is a powerful simulation method used to virtually prototype and test the performance of transfer equipment throughout a design cycle. When developed and applied correctly, DEM can provide insight into performance that exceeds the traditional analytical methods, especially when dealing with complex ore properties, behaviour and/or situations.Using case studies sourced from the authors’ recent research and industrial project work, this paper will address the industry goal to increase efficiency and productivity as well as the methods available to the engineers responsible for delivering designs that meet the aims of this strategic approach.The main focus of the paper will be the new calibration technology, which has been developed by the authors to generate DEM material models that are linked to real-world properties and flow behaviours via unique dynamic testing and innovative parameter calibration methods. These calibrated DEM material models can be deployed by engineers into their existing workflows, whether it be for feasibility studies, concept or final design, plant troubleshooting or optimisation.This new technology allows engineers to gain greater insight than that provided by traditional approaches to the design of transfer chutes and other process equipment and also allows informed design decisions to be made that meet industry efficiency and productivity requirements.CITATION:Grima, A P, Curry, D and Wypych, P W, 2015. Martha Mine is an open pit gold-silver mine, located within the township of Waihi, 150km southeast of Auckland and is operated as a joint venture between Normandy Mining Ltd. 67 %) as Manager and Otter Gold Mines Ltd. (33%). The deposit was historically mined, by underground methods from 1888 to 1952, producing 5.5 moz of gold and 30 moz of silver, from 11 mt of ore. The current operation began in 1988, producing, to June 1999 - 867,245 oz of gold and 5.5 moz of silver from 9.5 mt of ore. The licensed reserves were due to be mined out by late 2000. Consents were granted in December 1998 to allow the expansion of the operation through to 2007 accessing an additional 7.5 mt of ore at 3.4 gpt Au and 26.0 gpt Ag for 800,000 oz of gold and 6.4 moz of silver. The key elements of the expansion are: 1. Pit enlargement 2. Upgraded crushing and material handling facilities 3. Construction of a second tailings storage facility 4. Upgraded water treatment capacity 5. Increased operating capacity This paper presents an update of expansion activities to date.

Hidden under picturesque Bemic Lake, in Canada's eastern Manitoba, lies a highly fractionated pegmatite orebody, hosting a unique assemblage of minerals. Accidentally discovered in 1929, the orebody had a brief history as a tin producer, but it is now mined by Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Ltd. (TANCO), for its cesium, lithium, rubidium and tantalum bearing minerals. The mine also has potential for mbidium-feldspar, amblygonite, gallium rich mica, and quartz production. This paper describes the geology of the orebody, and its mining and processing. Selective, concurrent, mining and milling of the various products necessitates a high degree of planning and control, and these aspects are also discussed. The introduction of Quality Control and SPC are discussed, for such are the keys to excellence.

Grade control is a process of maximising value and reducing risk, through the delivery of quality tonnes to the mill via the accurate definition of ore and waste. It essentially comprises data collection, integration and interpretation; local resource estimation; stope design; supervision of mining and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of geological understanding led by high-quality mapping and sampling to drive appropriate estimation strategies and mining. Gold veins show various complex features relating to erratic grade distribution (nugget effect), variable geometry and internal architecture. These include variations in dip, strike and width, late-stage faulting/shearing effects and geometallurgy. Such variations generally require close geological understanding to ensure optimum grade, minimal dilution and maximum mining recovery. A well designed grade control program will prove to management and stakeholders that by applying geological knowledge, the mining process can be more efficient and cost effective. This paper reviews the issues of grade control in underground gold mines and focuses on integrated mapping and sampling through three case studies.

The M2 Upgrade Project involved widening 15 km of the existing M2 Motorway, which is a key route in Sydney’s road network. The Norfolk Twin Tunnels in North Epping convey traffic over a 460 m length of the motorway. The project involved widening the twin tunnels to provide a third lane and breakdown lane in each direction.The widening of the tunnels was fundamentally different to other ‘greenfield’ tunnel projects in that the operation of the tunnel was maintained throughout construction, with motorway traffic permitted close to the excavation faces on a daily basis. The widened works had to integrate with the existing tunnel support, construction details, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure.The existing tunnel afforded the opportunity to review existing ground conditions in the tunnel. Exposures were mapped within the tunnel, and key design parameters were back-analysed from the original monitoring data to provide increased confidence in the assessed impact from the widening works.Traffic capacity of the tunnels was maintained by detailed staging of the works, and included the ability to reopen the tunnels at short notice.A permit to tunnel system was developed to manage the risks associated with re-opening the tunnel to traffic. A comprehensive suite of instrumentation was maintained to provide reliable monitoring data to support this process. Emphasis on the robustness and reliability of tunnel instrumentation provided increased confidence in the adequacy of the tunnel support being installed. The monitoring was routinely compared with design predictions to check the adequacy of the support measures being installed and confirm the design.The approaches and methodologies developed for the widening of the Norfolk Tunnels were effective in maintaining the safe operation of the tunnels throughout the two years of construction, and provide a framework for increasing the capacity of existing tunnel infrastructure in the future.CITATION:Clarke, S J, de Ambrosis, A L, Bertuzzi, R and Redelinghuys, J, 2014. Using a scientific-principled definition of global socio-ecological sustainability can be a useful basis for planning precious and base metal mining projects. The mining industry faces key challenges of; viability of the minerals industry; the control, use and management of land; national and local socio-economic development; environmental management; materials stewardship; and access to information. Using a framework for strategic sustainable development to assess the current reality of mine project development has resulted in identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement between current best practices and a desired vision of sustainability constrained by science based principles. These gaps indicate opportunities to strengthen current strategies, tools, and actions with a deeper understanding of socio-ecologic systems and a first-order, principled definition of sustainability, enabling success in moving towards achieving a sustainable society, ie sustainability. Evaluation of mine project development and their impacts on ecological and social systems using a systems perspective which recognises the underlying principles of operation, delays, feedback loops and response to change highlight specific opportunities to create value for social, economic and ecologic systems. Envisioning this future for mining projects within a sustainable society can be done by evaluating their development and operations guided by the sustainability principles. Performance indicators play a key role in measuring progress towards achieving sustainability goals yet it is necessary to consider whether indicators capture the whole systems perspective. Connected to this broader view, indicators can contribute much value to the mining industryÆs sustainability journey. This paper examines how current processes for mining projects can be developed using a whole systems perspective and measured using holistically designed performance indicators.

The Yara Siilinjärvi plant is located in the central part of Finland. Siilinjärvi is Western Europe's only apatite mine and annually it produces 1 Mt of apatite concentrate, which creates approximately 10 Mt of tailings.At the beginning of 2017, tailings handling in Yara Siilinjärvi was brought to a new era, by replacing the conventional tailings storage facility with a new tailings treatment plant. The new high-density tailings disposal system with two paste thickeners increased the percentage of solids in the slurry from 45–48 per cent to 66-68 per cent, making it possible to deposit as a paste. This extended the life-span of the current tailings storage facility by 15 years; from 2020 to 2035.This paper presents the storyline of the Yara Paste Plant Project. The project began with laboratory testing and then progressed to pilot-scale thickening and beaching trials. After some successful pilot trials, the final process design was implemented. Process instrumentation and automation played a key role in the project, as the aim of the Yara Project was to make the plant operable remotely from the main plant. An advanced control system is needed to maintain process stability and the desired operation point in various operational circumstances.This paper discusses the results from the Yara site since the new tailings treatment plant commenced. Some of the main points are that the operation has been running consistently with an underflow solids content of 66-68 per cent, with average beach slope angles of 3.5 degrees in the tailings disposal area. This control system additionally facilitates minimum use of flocculant, which delivers significant savings to operating costs. Robust thickener operation also leads to the trouble-free high-density pumping and high availability of the Paste Plant. During the first year of operation, the plant’s availability has been very good, over 97 per cent.Currently, the plant still has its own staff working there during the daytime, but the Paste Plant is now already operated remotely during the night shifts. Investors, government, media and special interest groups expect to see business environmental and social performance respond and deliver increasing corporate responsibility and sustainability.   Thorough interrogation of business performance using a multi-disciplinary due diligence approach presents a more sophisticated review and benefits beyond the traditional compliance/conformance 'audit' style assessment.   Using a due diligence approach allows assessment through a comprehensive lens which examines potential short- and long-term risks including sometimes less tangible environmental and social liabilities, and informs management, investors and regulators of broader business performance. This approach provides information in a form that business can measure performance in a repeatable and enterprise wide sense.   This paper provides an outline of the due diligence process applied in this way, drawing from lessons learnt and industry based experiences in the due diligence process and the benefits and tools that can  be applied in an environmental and social due diligence business performance assessment

Located 350 km west of Sydney and 20 km outside Orange, NSW, lies the Ridgeway Gold Mine û NewcrestÆs flagship Underground Gold Mine. Key to success at Ridgeway has been the fast tracked development of the 3.8 km, 1 in 5.3 conveyor decline which houses the 850 t/hr conveying system feeding the dedicated Ridgeway Concentrator, built adjacent to the existing Cadia Hill Concentrator. Eroc was contracted to develop the steep conveyor decline, drawing on its personnel and experience from past metalliferous, tunnelling and coal mining projects to complete the ambitious schedule within 12 months. This paper deals with the complexities and experiences in safely delivering what is understood to be one of AustraliaÆs steepest declines of any substantial length in a metalliferous mine.

Controlling the access of equipment, and people, has become more critical over the last few years for improving productivity and to meet safety responsibilities imposed by legislated obligations to have safety management systems. Hence Mine Site Technologies (MST) has spent the last three years completing the development of the tagging system to meet the mining industryÆs requirements, particularly streamlining access control. The basic tagging system tracks active Tags carried by personnel, or attached to vehicles and equipment, within underground zones. These Tags are detected (read) by Beacons placed strategically throughout the mine. As a Tag, or Tags, go past a Beacon they are read and the information transmitted back to the main database PC. This allows the current whereabouts of personnel and equipment to be known, as well as the history of their movements. The objectives of implementing the TRACKER Tagging System at Oaky No 1 Coal Mine were to: maintain a count of personnel inbye a particular point, and can alarm when a pre-set number is reached (eg the limit imposed by availability of SCSRÆs, etc); maintain a count of vehicles (and vehicle type) inbye a point, and can alarm if when a pre-set number is reached (eg when rated diesel units exceeds the limit for the ventilation present in that zone); manage the vehicle fleet, by keeping track of various vehicles underground better control and dispatch management of the equipment is achieved; keep track of equipment, knowing the location of equipment (such as forks, baskets, pumps, fans, etc) where last used or stored will minimise the risk of losing gear and assist in keeping inventory to a minimum; and locate personnel in emergency situations, by placing read Beacons throughout the mine the location of all personnel can be known in real time so that in the event of an emergency, their withdrawal can be monitored.

A resource model serves two main purposes depending on the stage of a project. The first is to provide an early indication of likely tonnages and grades at certain cut-offs so that decisions can be made on whether continued spending on the project is justified. The second is to provide a basis for mine planning, feasibility studies and reserves. Resource models are not designed for selection of actual blocks in the ground for processing. This is the purpose of a grade control model, which is created at a stage beyond both resources and reserves.Inferred, Indicated and Measured Resources contain different levels of uncertainty with respect to the accuracy of the resulting grade and tonnage curves. These uncertainties arise from three broad areas: quality of information, geological assumptions and estimation technique. This paper focuses on known problems with the ordinary kriging (OK) estimation technique. Resource estimates often produce smoothed block grade distributions with much lower block grade variability than true selective mining unit (SMU) block grade distributions. There are two main factors that are involved in this smoothing. Firstly, where the block size used for estimation is larger than the SMU block size, this will smooth the block grade distribution and move the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves. Secondly, and less well recognised, is that smoothing is inherent in the OK estimator. This also moves the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU grade and tonnage curves, even when the estimate is done at the SMU block size. There are a number of techniques, such as simulation, uniform conditioning and degraded search neighbourhoods that can provide a better approximation of the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves at the expense of individual block accuracy.This paper aims to explore the extent to which OK resource estimates designed to maximise individual block accuracy can differ from (an estimate of) the true resource at SMU block size in terms of grade and tonnage curves. The differences at economic cut-offs and above are examined. In some cases these differences are significant. Both the OK estimation technique and block size play a part in the differences observed. To do this we will examine a number of commodities and deposit types using real project data.The conclusion is that the current industry standard default practice of targeting maximum individual block accuracy (conditional unbiasedness) using OK at resource stage, without consideration or evaluation of the extent of associated smoothing at SMU scale, can lead to significant errors in fundamental mine planning decisions. This paper examines the practical limitations that affect the measurement of stress in rock. As most rock stress measurement is conducted through the invasive process of drilling a hole in a rock mass, the nature of the rock and its response to being drilled form the basis of the stress measurement process. The prime techniques to measure stress down a borehole are to conduct hydraulic fracturing and its variant hydrojacking, overcoring, and the examination of the borehole wall for breakout or tensile fracture. It is also possible in some circumstances to use the sonic velocity within the rock mass as an indicator of the stress situation. Other structural indicators of stress such as joints, faulting and intrusions are useful but may not reflect the current stress situation within the rock mass. The variability of stress within the rock mass also needs to be considered as it is quite unusual to have a monotonic stress situation throughout any rock mass. The outdated concept of measuring the far field stress in a few measurement for use in a numerical model is quite dangerous. It is essential to make multiple measurements and to generate an understanding of its distribution in some form of model before stress can sensibly be incorporated into underground design. Statistical metallurgical plant trials are becoming more widespread, as a valuable tool for increasing plant profitability. Generally, a single parameter like metal recovery varies under the trial condition while all other variables such as average metal feed grade or average metal concentrate grade are equal for the two test conditions during the period of the test. Metal recovery is usually the measured variable because concentrate grade is fixed by smelter terms, and plants operate to maximise recovery at the required concentrate grade. However, in all flotation plants there is a relationship between concentrate grade and metal recovery, and under the same conditions increasing one results in a decrease in the other. At MMGÆs Rosebery Mine the zinc concentrate produced is generally above smelter specifications, so zinc concentrate grade can vary during a test. During trialling of magnetic conditioning in the Rosebery zinc circuit, the difference in both zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade were analysed. The analysis of changes in zinc grade and recovery during the trial raised some interesting questions about the relationship between concentrate grade and recovery. A paired statistical method was developed and tested to combine in each pair the change in concentrate grade and recovery in a single result that could be analysed by a paired t test. This method was found to be very sensitive to combined, varying changes in concentrate grade and/or metal recovery. Canada’s Quebec province operates 26 metal mines, 19 of which are producing gold and generating over C$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) annually. In all those mines, numerous samples of rock are collected and analysed daily in laboratories in order to determine their gold content. However, laboratory results are generally available within 48 hours of sampling (depending on the number of samples received by the laboratory and the priority of the results), thus potentially slowing down mining activities. In an attempt to find a solution for delayed laboratory results, Laval University, in partnership with the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) and four mining companies (Agnico Eagle, Canadian Malartic, Hecla Québec and Iamgold) have launched the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) project for in situ real-time mining sample analysis. This work aims to minimise the amount of LIBS point sampling necessary to be representative of a full scan of the analysed area. Eight sampling patterns are investigated. A statistical analysis of the data was performed by varying the pattern steps. Results show that two of the patterns, 1 and 5 (single diagonal crossing the stratification of the samples with opposite slopes) minimise the amount of point sampling while remaining representative. The most successful results are obtained from steps which are greater than 6. In terms of the type of material, pattern 5 and steps 9 are better for core sampling, while pattern 1 and steps 8 are better for rock sampling. The geological explanation for these results is the heterogeneous distribution of gold in the sample which seems to be more homogeneous in the rocks than in the core sample due to the small rock size. Volcanogenic massive basemetal sulphide and gold mineralisation of predominantly low sulphidation style has been located within Lower Tertiary basaltic and felsic volcanic and sedimentary sequences at Ufuo, in the Left April River area, northwest Papua New Guinea. The four discrete massive sulphide bodies, which have been so far identified, occur within a 3 +5 km area situated within a north west trending structural corridor. The sulphide bodies are all localised on the margins of the corridor where the bounding major through going faults are transected by regional faults. Mineralisation is characterised by massive pyrite-bornite-sphalerite-barite-quartz-anhydrite deposition with later galena-tennantite-chalcopyrite. Minor phases include enargite, goldfieldite and bismuth sulfosalts. Jasperoidal silica lenses and bioturbated sediments are closely associated with the massive sulphides. Basemetal sulphide mineralisation is also closely associated with phyllic-style quartz-sericite- altered host rocks underlying the massive sulphide lenses. This mineralised phyllic alteration is localised to fractures, veins and breccias that cross-cut propylitic style alteration characterised by quartz, epidote, chlorite, adularia and zeolite. The mineralised system possesses several hydrothermal features consistent with a copper-rich submarine exhalative volcanic hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) system, ie discrete massive sulphide bodies with abundant barite, associated jasperoidal silica and bioturbated sediments. However, exploratory drilling of the alteration zone underlying each of the massive sulphide bodies has not identified a well-defined zoned alteration pipe that is characteristic of such systems. The alteration is also similar to that of a porphyry-related low sulphidation system in which phyllic alteration has overprinted a regional propylitic style assemblage. The presence of sporadic enargite (and ?tennantite/tetrahedrite) suggest there were intermittent pulses of acid fluids in the system probably derived from exsolved magmatic SO2 which flowed directly to the surface along reactivated faults. The occurrence of tellurium and bismuth minerals is also consistent with a magmatic contribution to the metalliferous hydrothermal fluids. It is proposed that the VHMS orebodies are the products of submarine exhalative deposition generated by a crystallising magma emplaced within crust of on-going tectonism. Ufuo mineralisation is similar to many VHMS deposits elsewhere in that it is unclear whether the metals are derived from the magma directly, or via seawater leaching of the wallrock. Additional studies such as oxygen isotope analysis may assist in resolving this issue. If the metals are shown to be of direct magmatic origin then there may be good prospects for discovering economic-grade porphyry-related mineralisation at depth below the massive sulphide deposits.

An ilmenite ore from the Murray Basin was initially characterised using combined X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) techniques. XRF analysis showed the ilmenite sample contained 58.7 wt per cent TiO2 and 26.2 wt per cent Fe2O3. Major impurities included: Cr2O3 (4.5 wt per cent), Al2O3 (2.7 wt per cent), SiO2 (1.9 wt per cent), Mn3O4 (1.5 wt per cent) and MgO (1.1 wt per cent). Manganese and magnesium were present as solid solution components within the ilmenite lattice while the elevated Al2O3 and SiO2 levels were due to separate aluminosilicate gangue minerals. Chromium was associated with discrete chrome spinel gangue phases of variable composition, (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Al)2O4. Quantitative XRD analysis of the sample identified rutile (12 per cent), ilmenite (11 per cent), and pseudorutile (67 per cent) as the main titanium-containing phases and chrome-rich spinels (seven per cent) as the major impurity phase. Minor quartz, aluminosilicates, zircon and monazite were also present. The ilmenite was mixed with synthetic graphite, pressed into pellets and reduced carbothermally in nitrogen at 1200 and 1400°C with C/O molar ratio of 1.2. Titanium oxide in the ilmenite was converted to titanium oxycarbonitride. Iron oxides were reduced to metallic iron. The Changes of impurities as a result of reduction was examined by SEM and EPMA analyses. Iron and chromium oxides within Fe-rich chromite were reduced to form a Fe-Cr-C alloy. Mg-rich chrome spinels were partly reduced at 1200°C. Zircon particles were not reduced at 1200°C, but were significantly reduced at 1400°C, with the particles becoming porous and the silicon being removed.

QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.

The role of government and the community has changed significantly over the last two decades in relation to environment protection, particularly in the mining sector. Increased community expectations have moved well ahead of regulatory requirements, and there is now a much greater appreciation generally of the concepts of ecologically sustainable development and intergenerational equity, and the gap between current practice and practices which would be in harmony with these concepts. Besides providing a `safety net' through regulations to ensure that basic environmental performance standards are met, government is now working proactively with the mining industry to encourage higher levels of environmental performance. This paper describes some initiatives between the Commonwealth government and the industry designed to achieve these higher levels of environmental performance, through programs aimed at the paradigms of best practice environmental management and continual improvement.

This paper describes a CFD modelling study which was carried out to investigate possible improvements in the design of an alumina precipitator tank at the Jajarm plant of Iran Alumina Company. In particular, the tank has an impeller located very close to the tank bottom, such that it quickly becomes covered with settled solids after a shut-down of the agitator, making it difficult to restart. A CFD model was firstly set up in which the existing design was evaluated in terms of flow pattern, off-bottom suspension and distribution of solids, and power consumption. Further simulations were then carried out to test alternative designs, leading to a recommended design, which maintains good mixing, with the same power consumption and without the use of a low-clearance impeller.
