It is known from soluble salt flotation practice that the K, Mg double salts of kainite (KClMgSO43H2O), and carnallite (KClMgCl26H2O) are difficult to float and must be converted to other salts such as schoenite (K2SO4MgSO46H2O) and sylvite (KCl) in order to recover potash values. The flotation characteristics of these double salts have now been confirmed in some detail by carefully controlled laboratory experiments with both cationic and anionic collectors. The experimental results are discussed in view of recent experimental findings regarding the flotation characteristics of simple salts, in which the flotation response was shown to be determined by the interfacial water structure and whether the salt could be considered to be a water structure maker or a water structure breaker. The same approach can be use to explain the flotation response of the potassium double salts ; schoenite, kainite, and carnallite. In addition, the sign of the surface charge of schoenite (K2SO4MgSO46H2O), was determined as a function of pH from nonequilibrium electrophoretic mobility measurements. Schoenite appears to exhibit three charge reversals (CR) which can be explained based on surface hydrolysis reactions. The flotation behavior of schoenite is further considered based on solution chemistry calculations, electrophoretic mobility measurements, and microflotation results.

A mineral survey of a 5,700-acre portion of the 11,510-acre Upper Deep Creek Wilderness Study Area (ID-111-44B) in southwestern Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985. No mining claims have been located, no minerals have been produced, and no resources have been identified in the study area. Three reconnaissance samples of alluvium from the Deep Creek drainage contained $0.21, $0.22, and $2.72 per cubic yard in placer gold, higher than usual for the Owyhee River canyonland area. The samples of near-surface material contained very fine gold in values too low to support large-volume commercial placer operations, but the quantity and size of the particles of gold in the alluvium is expected to increase near bedrock. Consequently, the area may be a target for recreational as well as small commercial suction dredge operations. The physical characteristics of the individual pieces of gold (bright and angular) indicate that it may have recently come from an unidentified nearby source.

Automation in underground mining enhances safety and leads to economic efficiency. In the past many efforts have been made on the automation of longwall shearer operation. With respect to the ultimate goal of automation, ie self controlled operation, coal bed boundary detection is one of the key problems. For longwall human labor is necessary in order to detect the exact position of the coal seam to be excavated. The authors present a sensor concept based on infrared technology and pattern recognition which will solve this problem. The very harsh underground conditions set high demands on the implemented sensors. The combination of infrared sensors and powerful processing algorithms is part of the innovative concept for automation of the new Eickhoff Bergbautechnik GmbH SL 750 shearer loader. The multi-sensor automation system EiControlPlus which is designed for the complete detection of the machine environment fills in the gap in the coal-excavation automation by building a recognition system that turns the shearer loader into an 'intelligent machine' which is capable of detecting the correct position of the seam to be excavated and thus enables human-free coal mining.

"The ores of the Iberian Pynte Belt are typically massive sulphide ores with very fine grained mineral textures. EuroZinc Mining Corporation is currently evaluating one of the massive sulphide deposits located near the town of Aljustrel, in South Central Portugal. The deposit contains significant grades of lead, zinc and silver. The ores are comprised solely of sulphide mineralization consisting of pyrite, sphalerite, galena and some secondary copper minerals. Liberation requirements for these ores are typically 22 to 25 microns. A selective flotation process has been utilized to produce separate lead and zinc concentrates for sale to off-site contract smelters.This paper outlines the process test results and describes the process parameters required to optimize the process parameters. Ths test program has been conducted in support of the re-opening of the facilities in Aljustrel. The 3500 tpd mining and milling facility was commissioned in 1990 and operated for 18 months before closing. The previous facility was designed to produce three products using a selective copper-lead-zinc flotation process. EuroZinc Mining Corporation is proposing to re-open the operation, selectively mining from a lead-zinc phase of the massive sulphide deposit and produce only lead and zinc concentrates.Results are presented and discussed.PROJECT HISTORY AND CURRENT PROJECT OBJECTIVESThe EuroZinc Aljustrel Project is a potential major producer of lead, zinc and silver located in the Iberian Pyrite belt of south-central Portugal. The town of Aljustrel is historically associated with mining dating to the time of the Romans. The area is rich in pyrite deposits, and sections of the pyrite deposits contain significant zones of copper, lead, zinc and silver. Mining in Aljustrel during the last century (1900’s) included a major pyrite mining operation, which produced feed for sulphuric acid production. Pynte mining operated from the 1930’s to the early 1970’s and a short-lived base metal operation from 1989 to 199 1."

Questões socioambientais têm maximizado a permuta entre o uso de materiais sintéticos para o uso de materiais naturais. A fibra de fique disposta no presente trabalho na forma de tecido, extraída do folha da planta do fique (Furcraea Andina) demonstra grande potencialidade como reforço de compósito polimérico. Nos corpos de prova para os ensaios, as camadas de tecido foram misturadas à resina epoxídica DGEBA/TETA e justapostas sob pressão em um molde retangular metálico à temperatura ambiente por 24 horas. A quantidade de tecido de fique nos corpos de prova gerados, foram de até 5 camadas, cortados a partir das dimensões matriciais, seguindo a norma ASTM D256. Testados e após analisados por microscopia de varredura eletrônica (MEV). Pode-se notar o aumento significante da resistência ao impacto de acordo com o crescimento numérico de camadas fibrosas que reforçaram o compósito. Tal performance pode ser associada ao mecanismo de fratura, gerada da interação entre o tecido de fique e a matriz.

Reserve and production data are shown for each of the fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas) and for uranium. The consumption data of each of the major consuming sectors (household-commercial, industrial, transportation, electric power, and miscellaneous) are broken down by energy source (coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, and nuclear). In addition, total energy consumption in the Nation in 1973 is compared with consumption in 1972 and 1974 (preliminary data).

Diesel tailpipe CO, C02, NO, and N02 concentrations by the Emissions Measurement Apparatus (EMA) were found to compare satisfactorily with simultaneous concentrations by instruments in the MSHA engine certification laboratory in Bruceton, Pa. The EMA was then applied to the measurement of LHD vehicle diesel tailpipe gases and smoke opacity in the White Pine and Brushy Creek Mines. A general experimental approach was developed by which instruments could be compared for the measurement of diesel exhaust pollutant concentrations in the 1/2 to 5TLV range. The concentrations are changed by varying engine speed, dynamometer load, and the portion of the exhaust which enters the dilution tunnel. Dräger detector tube diluted exhaust CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 measurements were compared with simultaneously taken portable instrument measurements. Diesel exhaust interference inaccuracies were separated from inaccuracies due to detector tube calibration by comparing the instrument readings with both actual detector tube readings and detector tube readings corrected by recalibration of the detector tubes alongside NBS traceable calibration gases. The detector tubes' accuracy was found to be only slightly affected by diesel exhaust interferences and it was concluded that most measure within certification limits established by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The effects of 2 exhaust system configurations on the pollutant concentrations in a dead-end heading were studied. Both of the configurations exhausted the gases near the roof, directing them toward the crosscut, and both improved the stratification of the air in the heading, due to the bouyancy of the hot exhaust gases. One of the configurations was a pair of Fume Diluters which diluted the exhaust with air by a 10:1 ratio, and the second system was simply a pair of exhaust pipes, bent to direct the exhaust similarly to the fume dilutors. By redirecting the exhaust, the concentration of C02 measured on the LHD vehicle was reduced by as much as 507, in dead-end headings up to 200 ft long. The Fume Diluters showed no improvement over the simple redesign of the exhaust system.

The roles of pulsating mechanisms such as the amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are well established in jigging. Also well established are the roles of the size ratio and the volume fraction of the feed. In iron ore beneficiation plants, these process parameters are optimized to achieve the highest efficiency. However, the role of one of the more important feed characteristics, the liberation characteristic of the feed, has not been studied in detail. Evaluation of the liberation characteristics is difficult because the required washability test is not viable for iron ore feed. In this paper, a new method is proposed in which the liberation characteristics are measured through a separation efficiency value. In the new evaluation method, jigging parameters such as amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are optimized from the fundamental understanding of the process dynamics and feed characteristics such as size distribution. Then, feeds with different liberation characteristics are tested to evaluate the liberation characteristics of feed in jigging.

Granitic rocks usually exhibit strongly anisotropy due to pre-existing microcracks induced by geologic loadings. The understanding of the rock anisotropy in mechanical properties such as tensile strength is critical to quarrying and stabilization of underground structures. In this paper, Brazilian tests are conducted in combination with MTS material testing machine and split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system to measure both static and dynamic tensile strength of anisotropic Barre granite. Samples are cored and labeled using the three principle anisotropic directions of Barre granite (BG). These directions are also chosen as the loading directions for the Brazilian discs. For dynamic tests, pulse shaping technique is used to achieve dynamic equilibrium in the samples during the test. Finite Element Method is implemented to formulate equations that relate the failure load to the material tensile strength employing a orthotropic model for Barre granite. For samples in the same orientation group, the tensile strength shows clear loading rate sensitivity. The tensile strengths exhibit clear anisotropy under static loading; while less anisotropy under dynamic loading. The tensile strength anisotropy of Barre granite is interpreted as interactions of the pre-existing microcracks.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report reviews the state of the art in blind pneumatic stowing of backfill in voids in abandoned coal mines. It contains a short history of the development of pneumatic equipment in mining and four recent case histories of blind pneumatic stowing. Limitations of pneumatic stowing in terms of equipment wear, costs, backfill material, and methodology are discussed, and some new procedures and designs are reviewed. A bibliography covering pneumatics in mining is included also. This report provides background for the preparation of a Bureau test program in which the variables affecting the efficiency of pneumatic backfilling will be studied using a full-scale surface test facility.

Preliminary work in the investigation of electrolytic manganese, as reported J, showed promise for a practical procedure of continuous production. Laboratory work was continued in the direction of process simplification to determine an economically feasible procedure that mould require a minimum of expensive equipment for plant erection and a minimum of regent consumption for operation. Results furnished enough evidence to indicate that modifications of the process could be made leading to simplified procedure and with no sacrifice in operating efficiency. A supply of at least 200 pounds of the metal was desired for alloy research, and it was believed worth Mile to utilize available facilities in a search for difficulties, that were not encountered in the laboratory and that might arise in larger-scale operation. Consequently, an experimental pilot plant was erected. The plant was designed for a capacity of 15 rounds per day of metal and operated under simulated -plant practice.

U.S. supply and demand data for petroleum and natural gas liquids, by States and regions, were tabulated for the years 1960 and 1965. Estimates arcs provided of State-by-State quantitative data for the petroleum and natural gas liquids industry that can be integrated into State, regional, and national energy balances by source, form, and consumer sectors, and used for determination of interstate and interregional energy flows. Tables 1-4 show the estimated total supply of petroleum available for consumption and the supply's distribution among the major consumer demand sectors (household and commercial, industrial, transportation, and electricity generation). To obtain summary figures for the major proportion of refined products by States, individual tables were compiled for the six major products (tables 5-16). To enable comparison of petroleum data with those for other energy forms, conventional volumetric data in barrels were converted to their British thermal unit (Btu) equivalents. Interregional shipments of crude petroleum and theoretical flow patterns for petroleum products are shown in figures 1-4.

It has been shown for the first time that Poisson?s ratio decreases with increase in elastic moduli, E & G and ultrasonic velocities. This new correlation between two independent elastic constants may lead to the reduction in independent elastic constants for isotropic solid materials from two to one, at least for a given alloy system with different microstructural conditions.

RECENTLY, Ansell and aenel' proposed a dislocation model to account for the yielding behavior of dispersion-strengthened alloys. The criterion for yielding used in this model was that yielding occurs when the shear stress due to arrays of piled-up dislocations fractures or plastically deforms the dispersed second-phase particles. Calculations based on this model predict that the yield strength, uysof a dispersion-strengthened alloy containing particles whose geometry permits them to be considered as straight, i.e. not curved, barriers to dislocations follows the relation where and are the shear moduli of the matrix and dispersed phase respectively, b is the Burger vector of a dislocation in the matrix, A is the mean free path between dispersed phase particles and C is a constant. This yield stress, ys, is closely approximated in polycrystalline alloys by the proportional limit. The offset yield stress, uoy, is the yield stress, uys, plus the increase of stress due to strain hardening in the offset strain increment. Previous investigation1 has shown that Eq. [I] describes the yielding behavior of several different dispersion-strengthened alloys as a function of the mean free path between dispersed phase particles at a constant temperature. The purpose of this investigation was to investigate the temperature dependence of the yielding behavior of dispersion-strengthened alloys. The alloys studied, MD2100 and MD5100, are SAP-type alloys containing flake shaped aluminum oxide particles dispersed in a matrix of commercial purity aluminum. The proportional limit and 0.2 pct offset stress of both of these alloys were determined as a function of temperature over the temperature range from -190" to 500 C. All tests were conducted on an Instron tensile testing machine. Stress was measured by means of the Instron load cell. Strain was measured by means of SR-4 strain gages attached to the tensile specimens. Stress sensitivity was 80 psi. Strain sensitivity was 2 x 10F Fig. 1 shows the values received for the proportional limit and 0.2 pct offset yield stress plotted as a function of homologous temperature for both the MD2100 and MD5100 alloys. Inspection of Eq. [I] shows that of the terms which determine the theoretically predicted yield stress, uy,, only the shear moduli have an appreciable temperature dependence. From Eq. [I] the yield stress at any temperature T, UT, may be predicted from the yield stress at any arbitrary reference temperature, in this case 25 OC, u25, by the relation where the subscripts T and 25 refer to the values of the property at test temperature and at 25"C, respectively. A discussion of frequently asked questions may help individuals trying to interpret subsidence regulations or prepare permit applications. The subsidence permitting process involves just one part of the mass of Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act regulations. But of the 18 main SMCRA sections, subsidence is critical to the permitting process for coal operators. It's an area in which applicants have had problems interpreting regulations and preparing permit applications. Of 22 western states, only Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, and Utah heave thus far received approval for their mining and reclamation plans. The other states are now involved in the permit application process and will be dealing with SMCRA regulations for the next year or so. Some state programs, when approved, may differ substantially from the federal SMCRA program. But, to be approved, the state programs must be deemed equal to or more stringent than the federal regulations. SMCRA regulations apply to any coal operation "that exhibits surface effects." Thus they apply to surface strip mines as well as underground coal operations. The regulations do not apply to hardrock mining operations. Since August 3, 1977, the government, industry, and the public have wrestled with SMCRA. They have struggled through an initial program with the US Geological Survey; a new agency, the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM); an interim program; and a "final" permanent regulatory program. Even now, OSM is reluctant to publish formal program guidelines because: •The regulations are still in the process of judicial review. • Some approvable state programs will supersede the federal regula¬tions. • The flexible regulations are open to interpretation, which is desir¬able to maintain. •Guidelines could be misleading until regulations and interpretations are revised and finalized.

In 2005, El Teniente mine began preconditioning the primary rock mass by hydraulic fracturing (HF). The major perceived benefits of this process are a decrease in the magnitude of the expected maximum seismic event and improved cave propagation. In addition, HF has resulted in new information on the propagation pressures of each fracture. Previous studies have attempted to relate propagation pressure to minor principal stress or confining stress.Considering the spatial continuity of propagation pressure and the significant quantity of collected data since the incorporation of the HF technique, minimum requirements for geostatistical modelling have been reached, permitting robust estimates inside the representative volume with acceptable errors (Cornejo, Muñoz and Rojas, 2012; Cornejo and Landeros, 2013). These results are then used to identify zones with higher magnitudes, which are mostly related to more complex geotechnical zones (intrusive and major faults) and caving singularities, making it possible to estimate the spatial extension of these zones.Finally, these results are integrated with other geomechanics aspects to support risk analysis of the mining plan.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Landeros, P, Benado, D, Caviedes, C and Pinochet, A, 2016.
