Many states rely upon the Pennsylvania 1957 “Gas Well Pillar Study” to evaluate the coal barrier surrounding gas wells (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 1957). The study included 77 gas well failure cases that occurred in the Pittsburgh and Freeport coal seams over a 25-year span. At the time, coal was mined using the room-and-pillar mining method with full or partial pillar recovery, and square or rectangle pillars surrounding the gas wells were left to protect the wells. The study provided guidelines for pillar sizes under different overburden depths up to 700 ft. The 1957 study has also been used to determine gas well pillar sizes in longwall mines since longwall mining began in the 1970s. The original study was developed for room-and-pillar mining and could be applied to gas wells in longwall chain pillars under shallow cover. However, under deep cover, severe deformations in gas wells have occurred in longwall chain pillars. Presently, with a better understanding of coal pillar mechanics, new insight into subsidence movements induced by retreat mining, and advances in numerical modeling, it has become both critically important and feasible to evaluate the adequacy of the 1957 study for longwall gas well pillars. In this paper, the data from the 1957 study is analyzed from a new perspective by considering various factors, including overburden depth, failure location, failure time, pillar safety factor (SF), and floor pressure. The pillar SF and floor pressure are calculated by considering abutment pressure induced by full pillar recovery. A statistical analysis is performed to find correlations between various factors and helps identify the most significant factors for the stability of gas wells influenced by retreat mining. Through analyzing the data from the 1957 study, the guidelines for gas well pillars in the 1957 study are evaluated for their adequacy for room-and-pillar mining and their applicability to longwall mining. Numerical modeling is used to model the stability of gas wells by quantifying the mining-induced stresses in gas well casings. Results of this study indicate that the guidelines in the 1957 study may be appropriate for pillars protecting conventional gas wells in both room-and-pillar mining and longwall mining under overburden depths up to 700 ft but may not be sufficient for protective pillars under deep cover. The current evaluation of the 1957 study provides not only insights about potential gas well failures caused by retreat mining but also implications for what critical considerations should be considered to protect gas wells in longwall mining.

As part of a comprehensive investigation of tae mechanism of desulfurization of iron and steel by slags, the Blast Furnace Studies Section, Metallurgical Division, Bureau of :lines, in cooperation with the Institute of Technology., University of Minnesota, has made a study of the forms in which sulfur occurs in blast-furnace slag. This report presents data on the three sulfides most important in iron smelting, namely, ferrous sulfide, manganous sulfide, and calcium sulfide. The tendency of these sulfides to form colloids in the molten slag was determined by an examination of quenched samples with an ultramicroscope. Vogt5/ conducted experiments on sulfide silicate melts and examined synthetic blast-furnace slags in a partly crystallized condition. His conclusions were that FeS, CaS, and MnS, or isomorphous compounds, such as (FeXCay)S and (MnxCay)S, were precipitated from the melt, depending on the composition of the slag. In all specimens sulfides were visible and were spherical.

This work was commenced at a time when information on the manufacture of cemented tungsten carbide was urgently needed in Australia. Much information of a general type has been published, but many of the details of the processes used are still undisclosed. The aim of this research was to determine a satisfactory way in which cemented tungsten carbide could, be made, and to investigate the problems which are associated with the process. As the work proceeded, its ramifications grew continually, and it was necessary to limit the possible lines of investigation. After much experimental work, a 9% cobalt-tungsten carbide alloy was developed which had satisfactory properties when used as a cutting tip. The effect of certain variables on the properties of this particular alloy was investigated.The tungsten carbide was prepared in stages from King Island scheelite concentrates under strict laboratory control, whilst the cobalt (1) used was made from cobalt oxide prepared from crude cobalt oxide obtained from Eisdon.In order to clarify the detailed experimental work, a brief summary of the method used for the preparation of cemented tungsten carbide follows.Tungsten carbide and cobalt are prepared in a very finely powdered state, and are then thor,oughly mixed by a ball milling operation. The resultant mixture is pressed in a suitably shaped die into small compacts which are subsequently '''presintered,'' i.e., heated' in hydrogen between 800°C. and 1000°C. The final sintering is carried out in hydrogen between 1,400°C.and 1,600°C. for about half an hour. These "alloys" may contain from 3 to 13% cobalt, depending on the particular properties required of them.PREPARATION OF MATERIALSThe tungsten oxide prepared as described by Smithells (2) was extremely finely divided, and after a few hours' grinding in a ball mill, the powder consisted of material below 10 microns iJ;l size. The oxide was reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen in a tube furnace. "I. INTRODUCTIONA significant development in flotation over the past few years has been the increasing industrial use of flotation columns, primarily in Canada. The column differs dramatically from conventional mechanical flotation machines, both in design end operating philosophy, which has been a principal reason for its slow acceptance by the mineral industry. Boutin, Tremblay and Wheeler (1. 2) developed the concept in the early 1960's and since then plant and laboratory columns have been marketed commercially by Column Flotation Company of Canada Ltd. In 1980-81 at Mines Gaspe, Quebec, three columns replaced 13 conventional cleaners in a molybdenum upgrading circuit, with superior results (3). Since then many of the copper producers in British Columbia have installed columns for copper and molybdenum cleaning, including Gibraltar, Lornex, Highmont and Island Copper. There now appears to be widespread interest in flotation columns.The column is particularly attractive for applications involving multiple cleaning stages and can upgrade In a single stage compared with several stages of mechanical cells. This results in simpler, more controllable circuits. Importantly, the column itself is well suited to computer control. A significant problem, however, has been that of translating laboratory data to plant performance. The purposes of this communication are to address the problem of column scale-up and to describe some of the transport mechanisms of a flotation column, leading to a kinetics based model.A schematic of a flotation column is shown in Figure]. Industrial columns are up to 13 m high and 0.3 to 1.8 m in cross section (either square or circular). Three zones can be identified:a collection zone, with feed entering 2 to 3 m below the top of the column and descending against rising bubbles generated at a gas sparger; a washing zone, where a packed bubble bed is generated by a downward flow of wash water; and a conventional froth (2 - 5 cm thick), the sole purpose of which is particle transport to the launder. The tailings withdrawal at the bottom of the column is controlled at a rate slightly greater than the feed flowrate (called a positive bias).An important element is the washwater, added just below the froth zone. The component of the washwater that flows downward (to make up the bias) is sufficient to prevent coalescence of rising gas bubbles. The packed bubble beg so generated is very efficient at suppressing gangue entrainment to the concentrate."

The goal of any business is to seek the maximum profitability for the organization through optimization the use of resources, processes and the application of new technologies. An analysis of various case studies demonstrate that blasting can have positive impacts on the crushing and milling processes resulting in increased profitability for the mining industry (Grundstrom, Kanchibotla, Jankovich & Thornton, 2001). This paper describes the case study of two copper mines in Peru producing Cu-Mo and Cu-Au concentrates, which together with their strategic partner, have implemented a project focused on the improvement of rock fragmentation. The project was based on techniques of pattern size reduction, the use of high energy explosives and the technology of electronic initiation. Combined, these techniques were shown to have significantly impacted the efficiency of downstream processes.

The 73rd Street Tunnel Project is part of “The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan” (TARP)also known as the Deep Tunnel Project, and is located in the Village of Bedford Park, County of McCook, State of Illinois. The project consists of a ø 4.42 meter × 2,060 meter long (14´-6? bore, 6,760 foot)tunnel. The completed tunnel is used as a bypass tunnel for the McCook Cup Reservoir Project. The project was awarded to Affholder Inc. of St. Louis, in 2000. The paper describes the project in which a new, high-powered open gripper type main beam machine was used in which high advance rates have been achieved using conventional muck haulage techniques. Features of the project include the installation of rock support consisting of counter-sunk rock bolts that are required to be pull-tested for strength per project specifications. Installation and testing of the bolts are done during the boring cycle. Muck haulage was done by conventional muck car train and hoisting at the construction shaft. As the site layout did not include a tail tunnel, the trains needed to be shuttled at the shaft bottom. Even with the bolting requirements and the muck haulage without a tail tunnel, the Affholder site personnel still achieved high advance rates on the 73rd Street Project.

An incremental analysis based stope design optimization method was developed at Exodus, an underground project located 30 miles north of Carlin, Nevada. Traditional underground stope design methods, by manually drawing stope shapes, are typically very time-consuming and lacking of consistency and accuracy. For quick reserve calculation and economic analysis, a new method named '3D Incremental Analysis based Stope Optimization' was created for mine wide stope designs at Exodus. With this unique but practical method, multiple options of mine designs were completed within a short period time, which allowed us to select the optimal cutoff grade and best stope design option for the project.

Em sistemas cerâmicos policristalinos as homojunções e heterojunções podem apresentar comportamento elétrico desde completamente ôhmico até com elevada característica retificadora, que no limite é a base do comportamento varistor, o qual é o dispositivo de proteção de sistemas e equipamentos eletro-eletrônicos contra sobretensões mais utilizado. Os óxidos de zinco (ZnO) e de estanho (SnO2) são, individualmente, base dos varistores com melhores comportamentos elétricos. Este trabalho, com base nas caracterizações estruturais por técnicas de microscopia eletrônica de varredura e análises termodilatométricas, e na caracterização elétrica e dielétrica, avalia as propriedades varistoras de cerâmicas à base do sistema misto ZnO-SnO2. Verifica-se a formação de um sistema polifásico apresentando homojunções e heterojunções com diferentes características morfológicas e graus de densificação, exibindo ainda comportamento eletrotérmico com predomínio de características varistoras em função da dopagem da matriz mista ZnO-SnO2. Os resultados obtidos evidenciam a tendência da formação de espinélio (Zn2SnO4) em presença de grãos de SnO2 e do estabelecimento de comportamento varistor (coeficiente de não-linearidade > 10), que pode ser aperfeiçoado por dopagem adicional e por tratamentos térmicos, principalmente quanto à redução da corrente de fuga e da ampliação e estabilização da região não-linear da curva tensão x corrente elétrica.

ZINC concentrate, produced at Zeehan by flotation from Read Rosebery ore, is also dried and roasted at the same place for the production of a calcine suitable for use in the electrolytic zinc process at Risdon, Tasmania.DRYINGThe concentrate, dewatered to 12% moisture by an American filter, is fed into a dryer, the type of construction of which is similar to that of a duplex Edwards furnace. The dryer is 45 ft. long and 14 ft. wide, and has two rows of nine rabbles each, the two pairs nearest the firebox being watercooled.The longitudinal distance between rabble-centres is 4 ft. The rabbles are rotated at a speed of 3 r.p.m. by a I5-h.p. motor. Zinc concentrate is introduced by a screw feeder, consisting of two parallel-blade conveyors, revolving in opposite directions at aspeed of 31 r.p.m.Draft is supplied by a Sirocco fan, 15 in. intake, operated at 1340 r.p.m. by a 10-h.p. motor. The dust carried by the exit gases is removed in a wooden scrubbing tower, 3 ft. 6 in. x 4 ft. 6 in. x 27 ft. high, to which the fan delivers, and down which water issprayed.Wood (eucalyptus timber) is used as fuel, the consumption per ton of water evaporated being 0.55 :ton. Zinc concentrate from the dryer passed either to trucks for shipment or to Herreshoff furnaces. The portion for shipment is withdrawn at a point half-way down the furnace, being loaded on to a belt conveyor for transfer to railway trucks. The moisture at this point is 7% to 8%.

This report gives the results of mineralogical research on the Nicaro (Cuba) nickel ores and plant products. These studies were made under a cooperative agreement with the General Services Administration (GSA) of the U. S. Government. The purpose of the investigation was to obtain fundamental data that would be useful to other GSA contractors concerned with the Nicaro ores in their research on reduction roasting, leaching, and other phases of the project; and to the metallurgical staff of the Nicaro plant in Cuba. The overall objective of the combined research was to provide data to accomplish metallurgical improvement in the operations of the U.S. Government-owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente Province, Cuba. Particular emphasis is placed on improving the recovery of nickel from the ores and on the possibility of recovering other valuable constituents, especially cobalt. This study presents the physical and chemical characteristics, mineral associations, differential thermal analyses in controlled atmospheres, and X-ray studies of the ores and plant products. The nickel ores, serpentine and laterite, were from the Ramona-Lama Mulo and Ramona ore deposits. Serpentine ore consisted of serpentine-group minerals, basic iron oxide, magnetic iron oxides, chromite, olivine, enstatite, anthophyllite, cryptocrystalline quartz, wad, and a trace of calcite. This ore contained 1.6 percent nickel, 0.05 percent cobalt, 0.86 percent chromium, and 17.4 percent iron. Laterite are was composed principally of goethite with some altered serpentine, quartz, chromite, wad, magnetite, maghemite, and hematite. It carried 1.3 percent nickel, 0.11 percent cobalt, 1.9 percent chromium, and 48.4 percent iron.

Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

Cooling tower design has not advanced significantly in the last decade. Recognising this, Outotec has developed an innovative horizontal outflow cooling tower with increased performance compared to conventional design cooling towers.Outotec® Cooling Towers operate today in applications such as spent electrolyte cooling in zinc plants and for gypsum removal before copper solvent extraction. In such applications the use of this latest design has enabled increased production and lower maintenance costs in the downstream operations.In actual operations, the cooling performance has been confirmed at start-up, and has demonstrated that the towers operate in accordance with the CFD modelling. In the last three years these towers have proven themselves in commercial operation to operate with high efficiency and availability.This case study will outline comparative data, collected over two years at a site where both Outotec and conventional cooling towers are operating. The data shows that Outotec cooling towers require less than half the maintenance time of conventional cooling towers, when adjusted to a total solution flow basis. A close partnership approach with the site has allowed continual development, ensuring high availability and high performance.Experience with previous cooling tower installations guided the development of maintenance philosophies and procedures; this resulted in a design where maintenance intensive components were accessible from the top of the cooling tower. Although not immune from the problems affecting the U.S. economy generally, the mineral industry in 1991 contributed nearly $300 billion in the value of processed materials of mineral origin. Supporting this contribution, the Bureau of Mines continued the research and analytical programs highlighted in this annual review. Featured in 1991 were such relatively new programs as minewide monitoring applications in ground control and advances in processing of ceramics and composites, along with more traditional research into health, safety, and mining technology, minerals and materials science, and environmental technology. Under Bureau sponsorship, a National Minerals Policy Forum brought together some 200 executives from industry and Government concerned with minerals policy to begin a dialogue on developipng a policy statement on current minerals issues. A major feature of the forum was the keynote address by Secretary of the Interior Manuel Lujan, Jr.

The Bureau of Mines, through a cooperative agreement with Duquesne Light Co. of Pennsylvania, field tested a method of using pneumatic stowing of crushed limestone to construct seals in long-abandoned mine openings that were part of an active mine closed shortly before sealing. A total of 13 openings at 11 sites were backfilled. In pneumatic stowing, material is conveyed through a pipeline and into the mine opening under low air pressure. The stowing equipment consists of a power sup-ply, a blower, a feeder to inject material into the pipeline, and a nozzle for directing the placement. Material is ejected from the nozzle at high velocity, creating a high-compaction fill upon impact. The fill material used was well-graded limestone aggregate up to 1-1/2 inches in diameter, with sufficient fines. This fill was modified at five locations by the addition of portland cement, expansive cement, and/or bentonite. The pneumatic stowing method is safer and faster than conventional methods, is cost competitive, and eliminates or reduces the exposure of workers to possible hazards since the nozzle can be kept outside the mine opening. The equipment is mobile, but some modifications in the technique would improve performance. The technique was used at remote locations where other methods could not be used without disturbing the environment.

In July 1947, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Air Materiel Command, started an investigation of zirconium alloys with the object of determining the suitability of such alloys for high-temperature applications. This report covers the preliminary study of about 25 zirconium-rich alloy systems with respect to preparation, fabrication, tensile properties, metallographic structures; constitution, and heat resistance. Obviously, each system could not be investigated thoroughly, and this publication can be regarded only as a first approach. The more promising individual alloy systems will be studied in greater detail and reported in subsequent publications. The study of zirconium alloys on such a scale has been made possible by the U.S. Bureau of Mines developments in the past 5 years On producing zirconium metal. This basic process is similar to that developed by Kroll for producing ductile titanium metal and consists essentially of reducing zirconium chloride by means of molten magnesium. The Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory at Albany, Oreg., has produced several thousand pounds of ductile metal in this manner and has a pilot plant producing over 300 pounds of metal per week. Alloys were prepared by melting Bureau of Mines zirconium and the best available grade of alloying element in graphite, with suitable provisions for preventing oxidation. The ingots were quartered longitudinally and sheath-swaged at 850° c. to 3/8-inch diameter rod. Two of those rods were send to Wright Field for room-temperature and 1,200° F. tensile properties. The remaining two sections were used for metallographic, hardness, heat-treatment, and heat-resistance studies. The salient features of this investigation are summarized in table 1.

The largest potential reserves of manganese in Nevada are in the Pioche district. To date, these large reserves of 10-to l2-percent manganese cannot be upgraded economically. Other large, low-grade deposits, such as the Virgin River and Boulder City deposits in Clark County, cannot be considered immediate sources of manganese. Reserves of the principal manganese deposits in Nevada, based on the most reliable estimates, total about 17 million tons analyzing 7.6 to 13.6 percent manganese. Most of the deposits are of a type that cannot be prospected systematically but have been prospected and developed in the course of productive mining operations. To realize production from low-grade deposits that are amenable to concentration, a ready market must be provided. Thus far, Government stockpiles have been the major outlet for these low-grade ores. Research and experimentation over a period of years have led to development of several processes technologically applicable to these low-grade ore bodies, but their economics is not sufficient to allow competition with imported ores on the open market.
