The serious shortage of domestically produced asbestos during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to investigate reported asbestos deposits in Alaska. The most promising' appeared to be these in the Cosmos Hills and Jade Hills areas along the Kobuk River in northwestern Alaska. The deposits along the west side of Shungnak River, a tributary of the Kobuk River, were the first to be investigated by the Bureau, in the summer of 1944. Four bulldozer trenches were excavated, from Which a 2-ton sample was taken. This sample was shipped to Rolla, Mo., for testing in the Bureau of Mines laboratory. In the summer of 1945 an investigation of asbestos deposits on Cosmos Creek, also a tributary of the Kobuk River, was begun; the work was completed during the field season of 1946.

Frothers are surfactants used in floatation to aid generation of small bubbles. Studying events at the moment of bubble creation is a challenge because of the short time frame. This presentation introduces a novel acoustic approach. The technique has the resolution capable of detecting events that occur within 1-2 ms. The transition from coalescence to non-coalescence is tracked as a function of surfactant concentration and gas rate through the capillary. Results are given for some common flotation frothers and n-alcohols (C4-C8). A stress model is used to give a qualitative explanation to the observed action of frothers on coalescence prevention. Results for salt (sodium chloride) are included for comparison).

"INTRODUCTION An investigation of the metallurgy of cobalt from domestic ores has been in progress since February 1940 and has resulted in the formation of a hydrometallurgleal process for the production of electrolytic cobalt metal. Previous reports of these investigations have been given by F. K. Shelton; 7/ and Ruth E. Churchwrd, F. K. Shelton, and G. Knickerbocker. 8/ Briefly, the process, as applied to ores containing cobalt oxide, consists of leaching with H2SO3 or, preferably, with H2SO3 and H2SO4, to dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt solution passes through one or more purification stages to remove iron and elements of the copper group, and cobalt carbonate is precipitated under carefully controlled pH conditions. The cobalt carbonate is dissolved in on acid electrolyte containing sulfuric acid, boric acid, and sodium fluoride. The electrolyte then proceeds to electrolytic cells where cobalt is plated as a metal and sulfuric acid is regenerated.The present paper contains the results of several investigations signed to give a more complete chemical and engineering understanding of different unit processes involved in the electrowinning of colbat. Some work has been done to broaden the process to include arseniferrous cobalt ores as well as the oxide ores upon which the investigation was initiated. Most of the data presented herein have been obtained since the release of the previous reports; any changes suggested heroin that conflict with recommendations in earlier reports are based on more complete data and usually are preferable."

In ilmenite smelting, the FeO content of the feed material (nominally FeO.TiO2) is decreased by reduction with carbon. In a parallel reaction, a significant amount of the TiO2is reduced to Ti2O3.One of the striking features of these reactions is a consistent relationship between the extents of FeO and TiO2reduction; this relationship is independent of furnace size. It was recently proposed that this relationship follows from the solidification behaviour of the slag, where the final slag composition corresponds to the minimum melting point (?eutectic groove?) in the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3phase system; the hypothesis is that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining stabilizes the slag composition. If this is the case, the system of slag and freeze lining must be capable of correcting two types of disturbances: thermal and compositional. Thermal disturbances result from incorrect power input, for the feed rates of ilmenite and reductant. For example, excessive power input will tend to overheat the slag, causing the freeze lining to melt partially, establishing a new steady-state heat loss from the furnace. Compositional disturbances result from an incorrect reductant input for the given power and ilmenite input. In this work, the dynamic response of the slag and freeze lining to different inputs (flow rates of ilmenite and reductant, and power input) is modelled. The model is based on solidification equilibria, and quantified heat loss through the freeze lining. The conclusion is that the solidification equilibrium cannot constrain the composition to the eutectic groove for typical operating conditions. Plant operators in the mineral processing industry have been implementing expert systems for several years now, with the intent to increase production and reduce costs. Most systems have been installed on grinding circuits of some type and have proven that the technology is viable in that application. However, few applications on other processes have been attempted for various reasons, such as lack of reference sites, complexity of the process, lack of suitable measurements and lack of confidence in the technology. The successful application of an expert system on an Alumina Calcining kiln is the first such application in the West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco), and demonstrates how this technology can be successfully applied to other processes. The key objective of an expert system is to optimize the process. To achieve this the process must first be stabilized, followed by optimization of the operating parameters. The steps taken by this expert system to optimize the process are: • Check for abnormal conditions and deal with them using a prioritized set of special actions. • Use a selection of rule blocks to stabilize the process. • Once the process is stable, achieve additional benefits through further optimization of the process. The potential benefits that a user can expect to achieve through installing an expert system can be assessed on the basis that performance will improve from that of an "average operator" to that of the "best operator" performing at his optimum for 24 hours a day, every day. The quantifiable process benefits include: • Increased production • More consistent product quality • Reduced operating costs • Reduced standard deviation of key variables • Consistent plant operation The success of this project was measured in several ways: project implementation, realised economic benefits, and realised non-economic benefits. With a commitment to maintain the system over the long term, the longevity of the system is assured and will become an important part of the Alumina Calcining control strategy at Windalco. This paper discusses the various phases of implementing the ABB Expert Optimizer expert system, what the benefits were and the procedure that is in place to maintain the system to ensure continued long term success.

PRODUCTION of cesium, cesium salts, and rubidium salts in the United States declined somewhat from 1961 levels; rubidium production was virtually unchanged. Imports of pollucite declined because consumption was supplied partially out of inventory. Domestic Production.-About 50 tons of pollucite was reported mined at the Tin Mountain mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., MSA Research Corp., Callery, Pa., and Penn Rare Metals, Inc., Revere, Pa., produced a total of 159 pounds of cesium. Rubidium production remained essentially the same as in 1961. Shipments of the two metals by these companies and by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Trona, Calif., totaled 279 pounds. Production of cesium and rubidium salts by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Penn Rare Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., declined substantially during 1962.

The preparation of tungsten carbide by molten-salt electrolysis was investigated. Sodium tungstate in the electrolyte and carbon from the graphite anode were the source materials, Optimum results were obtained with an electrolyte consisting of 83 mole-percent sodium chloride and 5.7 mole-percent each of sodium tungstate, sodium metaborate, and sodium hydroxide; a temperature of 1,000° to 1,025° C; an anode current density of 37 amp/dm2 or less; and an initial cathode current density of 150 amp/dm2. The yield was approximately 0.45 g/amp hr. The electrolytic tungsten carbide product contained approximately 5.4 weight-percent combined carbon as compared to 6.1 weight-percent for pure tungsten carbide. Microhardness of the electrolytic tungsten carbide, determined with a 50-gram load, varied from 3,480 to 3,970 dph. The material was friable and could be ground in a laboratory ball mill to less than 400-mesh particle size.

The heat treatment is a process that acts as a key factor in the tool life of tools made with hot work tool steels. Due to their applications, the main desirable metallurgical properties of this material class are toughness and hot resistance, without which the tools may suffer premature failure, and may lead to increases in the cost of producing articles made using such tools [1, 2]. Therefore, special attention must be given to the heat treatments practiced in these steels, whose operations involve quenching and tempering. The present work carried out the effects of the austenitizing and tempering temperatures on the microstructural condition, hardness and impact properties of TENAX300IM®, modified AISI H11 with lower silicon content. Hardness was measured by the Rockwell method, C scale; the toughness was evaluated by the Charpy-V impact test; and the microstructure for each condition was evaluated by optic microscopy. It was shown that higher austenitization temperatures resulted in increased grain size and hardness; higher tempering temperatures resulted in reduction of hardness, and secondary hardening peaks were observed for some austenitization conditions. The impact resistance showed an inverse behavior to that of the hardness, remaining initially constant, up to ~ 550 ° C of tempering temperature, and then increasing with the tempering temperature. The microstructures presented great dissimilarity, mainly due to the dissolution of carbon and alloying elements in the matrix.

Thank you for the invitation to address The AusIMM Young LeadersÆ Conference here today. When I first saw the conference theme û æadvancing technologies and their future applications in the mining industryÆ û my interest was sparked because there is little doubt that technology and technological advances will determine the relevance of this industry in the future. And the people seated here today are major players in determining the minerals industryÆs destiny.During my 20-year association with the mining industry, I have observed a number of significant changes that have been delivered as a result of the vision of technical specialists. These changes have built a more competitive industry, a more socially acceptable industry and most importantly an industry with ever-improving safety performance. The purpose of my address is to attempt to provide a context and foundation for other presenters over the following two days. Today, I wish to try to answer the question, æWhy do we invest in new technology in the mining industry?Æ, via: a brief history lesson, a review of the needs of the business, a look at the process for improvement, and finally an example from WMC ResourcesÆ current technology portfolio. I would like to take a very brief walk back in time. During the iron and bronze ages, whilst our ancestors IÆm sure never spoke the phrase ænecessity is the mother of inventionÆ, I am sure they lived by it. Undoubtedly more so than we do today. The roots of geology, mining and extractive metallurgy grew out of the need for better tools in order to get access to the basic necessities of life. It was their superior ability to generate and deliver these ætechnologyÆ improvements that underpinned great civilisations such as the Egyptians, Romans and Incas. The application of mineral technology improvements by these civilisations was crucial to their success, it was their competitive advantage at the time. Many historical texts include detailed descriptions of both mining and processing fundamentals that formed the basis of many of todayÆs operations and processes. However, it is technological improvements to these fundamentals, as well as the development of new technologies, that have preserved the fundamentals as viable options for the industry today. Even in my time in the industry, there have been substantial improvements in the way business processes operate. When I first started working in a gold mine in WA in the late 1980s, the office had one PC (a 286 processor). All data was managed by paper and then often re-typed into other databases. Electronic mine design and process control was in its infancy. Today, massive amounts of data are recorded, analysed and acted upon almost without any human interaction. Our industry today has far different challenges than those described by Argricola. These are many and diverse, but new technologies are required to address three distinct classes of need: 1. Societal needs: physical needs for food, shelter, recreation and leisure; community and political needs for less waste, less emissions, better safety and working conditions, less energy consumption and sustainability. 2. Individual needs: intellectual needs to create innovative technical and organisational ideas. 3. Wealth generation needs: investor needs for maximising operating efficiency and value growth. Each new technology, to varying degrees, fulfils one or all of these needs. In many cases, the driver of a technological development was to fulfill only one of these needs, but after it was implemented, the development actually fulfilled each need. I would like to expand on these needs.

Resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology has recently often been considered for the direct recovery of base metals and uranium from dense pulps. Implementation of RIP will eliminate the requirement for any solid-liquid separation downstream of leaching and has the potential to combine the recovery and purification steps, hence reducing both capital and operating costs. The recovery of the valuable metal is expected to be higher when RIP is used, especially where the leached solids are difficult to settle or filter, and to wash. The main concerns about the use of RIP for uranium recovery from dense pulps are the impact of silica on the resin?s metallurgical performance and the operating costs that would be associated with resin loss. Although a number of resin manufacturers have been developing much improved RIP-grade resins, it is critical that the most cost-effective resin be selected. Mintek currently is doing a significant amount of work on silica fouling of RIP-grade strong-base resins in acidic leach liquors and the effect it has on the performance of the resin, including its durability. This paper describes the results of the test work done on silica fouling and its impact on plant design input data. Resin durability test work was done using various laboratory techniques, but durability was also evaluated on a relatively large scale using actual pumps, screens, and mechanical agitation. Based on the results generated, a preliminary economical evaluation was done to estimate the impact of resin loss on the overall economic viability of a specific application. O aço inoxidável ferrítico tipo 430 estabilizado com Nb, com e sem recozimento após laminação a quente, foi laminado a frio e submetido a recozimentos isotérmicos em temperaturas de 650, 700, 750 e 800°C por tempos variando entre 10 e 86400 s. A quantificação da fração recristalizada foi realizada pelo modelo de JMAK e pela microdureza ao longo do recozimento. A evolução da textura foi analisada via técnica de EBSD. Ocorreu o refino de grão após a recristalização, resultando em um tamanho médio de 8 mm. A temperatura de recristalização aconteceu a 750°C e esta teve maior efeito na recristalização que o tempo. Os expoentes de Avrami se situaram entre 0.8 e 1.2, significando nucleação em contorno de grão. A taxa de nucleação e de crescimento do grão diminuiu continuamente com o tempo. Em relação à textura, observou-se um aumento da intensidade das componentes (111)[121] e (111)[011] da fibra g e diminuição na intensidade da fibra a de deformação. Um modelo de cinética de recristalização do aço tipo 430 estabilizado com nióbio que leva em conta os processos de nucleação e crescimento foi obtido.

Neste trabalho estudou-se a microestrutura e a interface de um tubo bimetálico cladeado por centrifugação, constituído externamente em aço API 5L X65Q e internamente pela superliga de Ni-Cr Inconel 625, ambos vazados pela mesma posição relativa no tubo. O vazamento do Inconel 625 causou erosão no aço que diminuiu de intensidade do lado de vazamento (região mais quente) para a o lado oposto (região mais fria), onde a região de interdifusão não se apresentou mesmo uniforme. Nas regiões mais quentes (lado vazado e meio do tubo) ocorreu o cladeamento completo, com uma interface continua entre ambos os materiais constituintes, enquanto que na região mais fria a interface apresentou descontinuidades. O aço apresentou microestrutura ferrítica-perlítica com a região adjacente a interface descarbonetada, com grãos ferriticos nanométricos em uma região estreita de 3 µm. O Inconel 625 apresentou uma microestrutura de dentritas de austenita Ni-cfc com fases de Laves interdentríticas, devido a aumento do teor de Fe, com alta densidade de discordâncias na região adjacente a interface livre de precipitados.

A method for the detection and analysis of tin in cassiterite ores is discussed. An empirical relationship was established between the tin content of an ore sample and the percentage absorption that this sample produced in a Mossbauer experiment. The time taken to complete an assay with this method is much less than with any of the methods currently in use. The equipment can be adapted readily for use in the field.

BHP Billiton?s Cannington facility is a mining and minerals processing plant near Mt. Isa in Central Queensland, Australia, producing silver, lead and zinc. Mine ore is processed in a concentrator, which consists of grinding, flotation, thickening and filtration. Grinding is carried out in a fully autogenous (AG) mill. The mill operates in closed circuit with a pebble crusher. Throughput is approximately 380 tph. Cyclone overflow from the grinding circuit is fed into a flotation circuit for the recovery of lead, zinc and silver. Two concentrates are produced (lead and zinc), which are then thickened and filtered. The filtered concentrate is transported by road to a rail receiving station. From here the concentrate is railed to port in Townsville for shipment to the smelter. Matrikon and Engineers at BHP Billiton?s Cannington Mine have used ProcessACT to develop a flexible, nonlinear dynamic simulator for the grinding circuit to further enhance process understanding, as well to investigate various optimization strategies. An online charge volume estimator was also developed for the AG mill to aid in the understanding of overload conditions, which for the previous two months had been the primary contributor to downtime. The models were developed using a combination of first-principles modeling along with input-output dynamic responses. Examples of models used include: Morrell ?C? model for power and charge shoulder/toe angle prediction; Whiten?s mixing model for breakage and hold-up; Nageswararao cyclone model for predicting cut size; slurry recovery and water recovery. The composite model simulates system dynamics starting from the stockpile reclaim system and finishing at the feed for the flotation process. The objective was to provide a tool that assisted Cannington in understanding their Grinding Circuit and allowed them to develop and evaluate circuit optimization strategies. BHP Billiton Cannington Mine is now considering development of a Grinding Circuit Optimizer utilizing the models developed for the simulator.

Enhancing the understanding of gravity flow in caving operations is a key factor in the design, operation and success of caving methods. Consequently, much research has been performed to increase knowledge about gravity flow. Many valuable theories have been gained from different research approaches, which include physical modelling, numerical modelling and a limited number of full-scale tests. Recent advances in technology have allowed Codelco Chile to carry out trials using Smart Markers technology. This technology was used in Esmeralda mine’s Block-2 at El Teniente mine from August 2012 to January 2015. This paper aims to determine the characteristics of the extraction zone and obtain the data that will allow greater understanding of gravity flow for design and draw control purposes.The collected data from recovered markers were analysed using a linear interpolation of both the initial position of the markers and drawbell accumulated drawn tonnage. For each drawpoint in the trial, the regularity or irregularity of flow was analysed based on the recovered markers and the drawn tonnage. Correspondingly, the relationship between flow characteristics and observed fragmentation in drawpoints was analysed. The gravity flow of the Smart Markers revealed that current drawpoint spacing provides the interaction conditions of adjacent flow zones. However, it is possible to increase the drawpoint spacing while allowing caved rock to be extracted from the major and minor apexes.The results of this research also verified that full-scale test data are the predominant factor in the production level design and production control at El Teniente mine.CITATION:Garcés, D, Viera, E, Castro, R and Meléndez, M, 2016. Thorium and cerium are two of the group of elements known as "rare earth metals," and are obtained from the mineral monazite. Previous to the employment of thorium and cerium in incandescent gas mantles these elements were nothing more than laboratory curiosities, as the rest of the rare-earth metals are to-day. The most important salts of these rare earths are the nitrates. In the manufacture of gas mantles, thorium nitrate is the principal ingredient and forms prom 92 to 99 per cent of the impregnating material; the other 1 or 2 per cent is largely cerium nitrate and is quite as necessary, for without it there would be little luminosity to the mantle when in use. When the mantle is "burned off," the nitrates are changed to oxides. The monazite used as a source of thoria contains from 6 to 9 per cent of thorium oxide (Th02) and 24 to 32 per cent of cerium oxide (Ce203). As only the thoria and a very small hart of the ceria from the monazite could be used in gas-mantle manufacture, for a time the residues consisting mostly of ceria with somewhat smaller quantities of other rare earths found no commercial application. Later, however, they came to be utilized in several ways, the most important being: (1) the manufacture of cored flaming arc carbons, a great, irmprovement over the plain arc carbons used in electric lighting; (2) cerium metal used in the manufacture of pyrophoric or sparking alloys or "flints" for automatic pocket lighters and miners' lamps; and (3) the production of special kinds of optical and art glass.
