A way back in 1851-2 an army of diggers had commenced the conquest, of the now famous goldfields of Australasia. At that time, and in the Colony of Victoria, more that 10,000 were camped on and around the slopes of the silurian ridges over which Ballarat East h'as been built. A wonderfully rich golden harvest was soon gathered from the alluvial found high on these slopes, and from runs (or gutters) which got their rise on them, and were traced down gullies into a broad valley. In due course it was ascertained that the valley carried a main gutter which represented the unity of the higher ones, and further explorations proved this gutter to have a westerly and then a southerly trend toward and under a basaltic plateau, on the top ofwhich Ballarat West and Sebastopol now stand. In the records of alluvial gold mining all the world over the Ballarat field can be classed amongst the richest. Gold in pieces the size of beans, in, stringy filigree bits, in dust and in solid lumps (the largest of which weighed more than 2,200 ozs.), was obtained in the comparatively shallow ground on the slopes; and speaking generally, great and uniform richness was met with along a belt of country on which, in a north and south line, the present quartz mines of Ballarat East are at work. It was noticed by the diggers that when the gutters crossed the upturned edges of the ,strata, the gold deposits in them were patchy, and that when they trended north and south on this beltthey carried rich deposits for longer distances. In time it was also noticf!d that a class of stringy, irregular shaped quartz occurrences, in a bottom of soft slates, in the, immediate vicinity of tpe g)ltter, meant greater richness, and (in the aIluvial) on the higher ground slabs of quartz would now and then be met with, in which strings and spongy masses of gold were found. As the shallow alluvial became worked out the diggers turned their attention to the quartz occurrences, and, now and again the striking of a flat make of a very golden nature would cause quite a stir in the local mining world.

Excavation bracing is a special structural system. It is built from the top down. The design is controlled by the economical construction of another structure as well as by the movement of the ground beyond the limits of its construction. It serves a number of purposes, all subordinate to the construction of the principal structure. Despite its importance, bracing design and construction is frequently overlooked in project planning, causing delays and expensive changes. Thoughtful planning, good design and resourceful, innovative construction can improve construction safety and save time and money.

The Bureau of Mines undertook this investigation in order to determine the feasibility of producing commercially acceptable alumina and iron by application of the Pedersen process to high-silica, high-titania, ferruginous bauxites of the Pacific Northwest. Calcium aluminate slags were produced by smelting bauxite with coke and lime in an electric-arc furnace. Over 90 percent of the total alumina can be extracted by sodium carbonate solution from slags of properly controlled ternary-phase composition (CaO-Al203-SiO2) that are cooled slowly enough to permit adequate crystallization of the 2CaO-SiO2 and the calcium aluminate compounds. Most of the iron charged was recovered in the regulus; the slag contained about 2 percent iron (as iron oxide), regardless of smelting time.

[This Bureau of Mines study is intended to identify and evaluate potential effects of impending large-scale U. S. rail line closings (abandonment) on domestic nonfuel mineral industries. This is the first nationwide study of rail abandonment impacts focused on nonfuel minerals. The analyses presented is based principally on a survey of 200 rail freight records and on statistical tests that correlated 2,000 points in the Bureau's Mines Industry Location System (MILS) with 700 prospective abandonments throughout the United States. The conclusions derived from the analysis can be useful in evaluating proposed national rail abandonment policy rind legislation regarding nonfuel miner it shipping. Among these conclusions are the following: (1) Certain mineral materials (especially fertilizers) are likely to account for a large percentage of the rail traffic affected by abandonment in the next few years, but the total tonnage- involved will be small; (2) abandonment will adversely affect some mineral shippers, particularly local smart haulers; and (3 abandonment could significance reduce the opportunity to develop new resources or reopen defunct mining facilities. Despite these problems, however, the data examined in this study do not indicate that current abandonment trends will cause widespread disruption 01 domestic nonfuel mineral shipping.]

In order to deliver a quality shotcrete and concrete product underground for the extensions to the Cullinan Diamond Mine operations it was decided to develop a new, simpler concrete product to meet underground support requirements. The aim was to develop a concrete product that not only reduced costs but also met the performance criteria of the current range of concrete products used on Cullinan Diamond Mine, a 25, 45 and 60 MPa concrete and a fibre reinforced wet shotcrete. The concrete product batching and delivery system was to be from surface as opposed to the current underground batching systems. The operational principle was to include an automated surface batching plant with delivery of the concrete product to a borehole containing suspended pipelines delivering to an underground storage facility from where the product is delivered to the working area by further pumping or agicars. A aspersão térmica é utilizada para produzir revestimento quando há necessidade de aumentar a vida útil de sistemas e peças, podendo ser também utilizada na recuperação delas, em alguns casos. Com o intuito de compreender melhor o processo de aspersão térmica por chama a pó, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar os fatores influentes no aumento de espessura depositada pelo processo, utilizando o delineamento de experimento de Taguchi para avaliar os fatores e níveis dos fatores que geram as melhores condições de aplicação para o revestimento. Para isto, foram escolhidos três fatores de controle com três níveis cada um, dos quais foi possível seu controle em laboratório. A deposição foi realizada em chapas de aço SAE1020, e revestida com pó de alumínio não atomizado. A seção transversal dos revestimentos foi analisada por microscópio ótico. Os resultados dos experimentos foram analisados através de estatística descritiva, gráfica e análise pelo delineamento de Taguchi, baseada na análise de Sinal/Ruído. Sendo evidente que os fatores do processo são estatisticamente significativos: número de passes, fluxo de nitrogênio e a taxa de alimentação de pó. Esta análise se mostrou eficaz, gerando os resultados esperados para otimização dos parâmetros do processo.

This report is an account of research conducted to improve the performance of and then further field test Draft Power Sensor (DPS) equipment, the use of which enables a bulldozer operator to optimize his machine's work rate. Significant improvements were made in DPS hardware, and extended field testing was conducted at two working strip mines: the Glenharold Mine of Consolidation Coal Company, near Stanton, North Dakota, and the Beulah Mine of Knife River Coal Company, near Beulah, North Dakota. This report documents the increase of bulldozer work production by greater than twenty percent while using the Draft Power Sensor when compared to baseline work production without benefit of the Draft Power Sensor. Research was done by Southwest Research Institute under contract with the Bureau of Mines.

STATISTICAL data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines and to their mills, and/or processing plants are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1960. The information pertains to metal mines, as well as ore-dressing plants and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries and reduction plants, and their auxiliary works. These data are voluntarily submitted annually to the Bureau of Mines by the operators, and contribute greatly toward the promotion of safety in the mineral industries. The data presented are classified according to the principal mineral produced and include information on copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, uranium-vanadium and miscellaneous metals. A breakdown of miscellaneous metals by commodities is shown in table 19, page 41. The data also relate to workers engaged in production, exploration, development, construction, and maintenance and repair work, as well as supervisory personnel and office-workers at the mine or plant site. MODERN advances in practically all lines of industrial development have occurred in such rapid succession, and have been accepted so readily as accomplished facts, that a retrospect surprises us, by showing how comparatively few of the acknowledged factors of improved conditions may be considered as old. While these advances have not been confined to any country, they have been more pronounced in some than in others, and nowhere more so than in the United States, the population of which, having multiplied nearly three-fold between 1870 and 1910, demanded a proportionately greater increase in materials, supplies, and manufactured products. It therefore appears desirable to discuss mainly conditions in the United States, as concrete evidence of industrial progress throughout the world. Looking backward for but three generations, we may trace the introduction and development of canal- and steamboat-navigation; railroad-transportation; artificial illumination beyond that furnished by candles and lard-oil; quick communication by mail, and subsequently by telegraph or telephone; the manufacture of iron, beyond forms of small dimensions; the production and utilization of steel in large quantities; the economic use of mineral fuel, oil and gas, etc. The practical coincidence of the fortieth anniversary and the 100th technical meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, offers temptation to recall and compare the conditions of mining and metallurgy in or about the years 1871 and 1911. A complete resume would cover phenomenal changes in mining-methods and equipment by which the output of individual exploitation has grown from scores to hundreds and even thousands of units in equal time-intervals. The Reefton Goldfield, both historically and potentially, represents a significant gold producing camp in the Westland province of New Zealand. Some two million ounces of gold have been produced from the Greenland Group host rocks between 1870 and 1951 with the most significant producers being the Blackwater and Globe Progress mines.   Steep terrain, high rainfall, poor outcrop, widespread fluvio-glacial deposits, tertiary cover and sometimes onerous environmental access conditions have proved a challenge to conventional exploration techniques. In addition classic exploration techniques have come up against a desire to reduce exploration cycle time and exploration costs while increasing both quality and quantity of geological information.   The trial, and subsequent implementation, of Wacker sampling has proved a highly successful and effective geochemical tool currently being utilised to target, discover, and define potential economic gold mineralisation in the Reefton Goldfield.

Successful hydraulic pressure treatment of oil and gas wells that have long producing intervals, multiple pay zones, fluid thief zones, or natural or induced fractures has long been a serious problem plaguing the petroleum industry. High fluid-injection rates, straddle packers, ball sealers, and either liquid or solid additives to the treating fluids are being used to cope with this difficult and costly problem.l-6 The use of ball sealers and straddle packers is limited, in practice, to wells that have been completed with perforated cemented casings or liners. Well stimulation with ball sealers and straddle packers is usually successful as long as the cement remains competent. The other techniques of diverting are used with all types of completions. However, there are two significant disadvantages of the high rate method: excessive horsepower requirements, and the need of large treating-fluid volume. Consequently, most well stimulation techniques that involve diverting depend upon ball sealers or granular materials. Liquid diverting agents, and some of the solid ones in use today, frequently will cause formation damage. On the other hand, the most popular particulate diverting agents often are so soluble in the treating fluid that they become largely ineffective; their particle size is severely reduced as they dissolve while being transported through thousands of feet of pipe to the formation face down hole. In our attempts to deal with the shortcomings of these diverting agents, we experimented with a large variety of potentially suitable deformable materials the solubility of which could be controlled. Following are the criteria for the diverting agent sought: 1. The material must be effective in reducing fluid loss to thief zones, including existing fractures and very high permeability layers in the formation to be pressure treated. 2. The material must have enough strength to bridge under the treating pressure. 3. The material must be insoluble or slowly soluble in the treating fluids so that the particles retain sufficient size to be effective after they reach the formation face. 4. The material must be completely soluble in the produced oil or condensate liquid so that it can be removed readily; it must not cause formation damage. A number of products consisting of various polymers blended with waxes and other solid hydrocarbons were examined. All these materials satisfied the criteria for a diverting agent and also exhibited some degree of plastic deformability. On the basis of initial tests of strength and hardness, several blends of wax and polymer were selected for extensive testing in the laboratory and the field. These compounds have congealing temperatures ranging from 140 to 190F; they are insoluble in water and soluble in oil. They conformed, therefore, to the criteria specified for a theoretically superior diverting agent. Laboratory and field tests were conducted using these wax-polymer materials to demonstrate that the use of a deformable diverting agent can significantly improve fluid diverting performance. The centrifugal elevator invented and patented by the writer is designed for the purpose of conveying the tailings of a gold dredge to such a distance that it shall not impede the dredging opperations. Formerly this was usually accomplished by means of a belt of buckets travelling round a ladder set at an angle of about 30 degrees to the horizontal, but this meant heavy wear and tear on the travelling buckets and the tumblers actuating them. The centrifugal elevator throws the tailings through the air to the required height and distance and it is manifest that during their flight from the elevator to the heap there is absolutely no wear and tear, only the attraction of gravity and the resistance of the air has to be overcome. All then there is left to he considered is how to throw the stuff with the minimun of prower and wear on the elevator.The elevator consists of a cam-shaped steel casting with a disc of mild steel plate on either side: These side plates project a few inches beyond the tips of the beaters, in order to prevent odd stones from straying in an undesired direction; they serve also to prevent extra large stones from reaching the beaters, for they slide off the rims into the water.

Drill cores from 18 exploratory holes that were drilled into the unleached saline beds were tested for mechanical properties by the Bureau of Mines. Test cores were primarily selected from zones L4B, R4B, L3, and R3A in the Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colo. Regression analysis techniques were tried in an attempt to relate kerogen yield or apparent specific gravity to the parameters compressive strength, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio. Correlation coefficients were very poor, indicating that this type of analysis was not amenable to these data. Analysis of variance techniques were tried using a division of either greater than or less than 10% nahcolite together with the requirement of less than 3% dawsonite. Results showed that a larger percentage of nahcolite tended to lower the compressive strength and to increase Young's modulus. A second analysis was made using a division of less than 3% dawsonite and greater than 3% dawsonite together with the requirement of less than 1% nahcolite. For this analysis, a larger per-centage of dawsonite tended to increase compressive strength, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio. Mean compressive strength values were determined for the mining horizons of interest. Average physical properties for design purposes were also determined for the horizons of interest and for a proposed adit based only on logged geologic depths to these horizons. No consideration was given to percentages of nahcolite and dawsonite. Creep data obtained from nahcolite-and dawsonite-rich oil shales provides a best fit to a modified power equation.

This paper, describing the milling practices at the Hayden concentrator of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. is the first of a Series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on milling methods and costs in various districts of the United States. The Hayden concentrator is located at Hayden, Gila County, Ariz., 20 miles from the mine at Ray, Pinal County, Ariz., and approximately 1-1/2 miles north of the junction of the Gila and San Pedro Rivers. During the fourth quarter of 1928 the concentrator treated daily by flotation an average of 10,336 tons of ore containing 1.25 per cent of copper. The average recovery during this period amounted to 87.84 per cent of the total copper. The concentrates contained 19.88 per cent of copper.

A mineral survey of portions of two contiguous WSAs (Wilderness Study Areas) along the South Fork Owyhee River in southwestern Idaho and north-central Nevada was done by the U.S. Bureau of dines in 1984. The portions of the WSAs, known as study areas, have a combined area of 47,610 acres. The Idaho study area consists of 42,430 acres of the 42,510-acre South Fork Owyhee River WSA (ID-16-53). The Nevada study area consists of 5,180 acres of the 7,840-acre South Fork Owyhee River WSA (NV-010-103A). The Idaho study area is within the Boise District of the Bureau of Land Management, and the Nevada study area is within the Elko District. In the Nevada study area, no claims or hard rock mineral occurrences are known.

A microestrutura de cerâmica incorporada com 0 e 10% em peso de lixo, e depois disparada a 600°C, foi avaliada por microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e difração de raios X. Os resultados mostraram que o desperdício altera a microestrutura da cerâmica argilosa aumentando a porosidade, bem como formando novas fases cristalinas, principalmente com compostos de cálcio.

A test program was conducted to evaluate use of high-strength concrete in drilled shafts (caissons). The objective of the program was to determine if internal temperatures developed during cement hydration, or other characteristics of high-strength mixes, affect in-situ strength and stiffness. This paper covers strength results. Two 10-ft (3.0-m) diameter by 40-ft (12.2-m) deep caissons were constructed using two different commercially available high-strength concretes, a "low-heat" and a "high-strength" mix. Measured 6x12-in. (150x300mm) moist cured cylinder strengths at 56 days were 13,690 psi (94 MPa) for the "low-heat" mix and 17,130 psi (118 MPa) for the "high-strength" mix. Compressive strengths and moduli of elasticity of cores taken from the caissons were compared to those of companion cylinders made during casting of the caissons and stored in a moist room. Strengths of 4x8-in. (100x200 mm) cores taken at four ages and tested between 34 and 398 days averaged 81% of strengths of 6x12-in. (150x300 mm) moist cured cylinders at corresponding ages. In-situ (core) strengths of the caissons did not appear to be measurably affected by temperature. However, the data indicate that core strengths were sensitive to level of consolidation, as reflected in entrapped air voids. Overall, the results indicate that high-strength concretes can be used in drilled shaft (caisson) foundations.

It is estimated that well over 20 million lb of chromium and 8 million lb of nickel, plus other metal values, are diverted annually to furnace dusts, mill scale, and contaminated swarfs in the domestic stainless and other specialty steelmaking industry. Little inroad has been made toward the in-plant recycling of these wastes to reclaim the metal values. The Bureau of Mines has devised a process for recovering about 90 pct of the chromium and molybdenum and well over 90 pct of the nickel and iron from stainless steelmaking furnace dusts, swarf, and mill scale. Other metals such as manganese are also recovered. Initial laboratory results were confirmed and expanded to include a wide variation of stainless steelmaking waste mixtures. Later experiments have included specialty steelmaking wastes other than from stainless steelmaking. Significantly, the ease of technology transfer has been demonstrated by a number of industrial-sized (19-ton) commercial electric furnace heats, in which the pelletized wastes represented some 10 to 20 pct of the furnace charge, replacing part of the normal scrap charge. Results of these successful large-scale trials are presented. Some information is also presented on incorporation into the pellets of chromium-bearing particulate wastes originating from other than steelmaking production. Cost evaluation indicates the process is economically attractive.

As part of its program to develop technology that will encourage maximum utilization of the Nation's mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on debrining potash-clay waste slurries by means of flocculation with a high-molecular-weight polymer and subsequent solid-liquid separation on a rotating trommel screen. In laboratory batch tests, potash-clay waste slurries were consolidated from initial clay contents of 8 pct to final contents of 30 pct with a polymer dosage of 1.2 Ib/ton of dry clay waste. Small-scale continuous tests yielded debrined products containing 20 pct solids using a polymer dosage of 1 Ib/ton of dry clay solids.
