This paper outlines a number of immediate practical approaches to continuous improvement in environmental management in the minerals industry. It puts these into context with longer time-frame step-change approaches whose gestation may take a decade. Examples of improvements and approaches are drawn from WMC operations.

There has been much debate in recent years regarding the number of Geology (Earth Science) graduates produced in Australia. The key variable has commonly been assumed to be the placement of graduates in the mineral and petroleum industries. Although not wishing to deny the importance of this element, we contend that Geoscience studies should be given to a wider variety of graduates. The essence is to make students and future citizens more environmentally aware. INTRODUCTION Geoscience is fundamental to exploration and to the well-being of the minerals industry and hence the Australian economy. The value of mineral primary products exports for the past three years has been: 1895 $15.3 billion 1986 $14.8 billion 1987 $16.3 billion (Data source: B.M.R) The mining industry supplies about 40% of Australia's export earnings. However the overall value of Geoscience to the Australian economy is much greater. At the opening of the ANZAAS conference in Townsville during May 1987, Sir Bruce Watson , Chairman of the Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., made a plea for a national re-examination of the way science is taught in secondary schools. In particular he emphasized the point that the community should be more aware of the importance of Geoscience and the value of the mining industry to Australia.

The process development described in this report was carried out at the Morgantown Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with West Virginia University. An experimental laboratory-scale pilot unit to gasify coal dust in entrainment was constructed on the Campus of the University in Morgantown. The enormously accelerated demand for liquid and gaseous fuels and utilization of our immense coal resources require that a low-cost process be developed for the gasification of a wide variety of coals. Such a process would be a major factor in lowering the cost of synthetic liquid fuels. None of the proc3sses developed in Germany prior to and during World War II, such as the Winkler process, the H. Koppers dust gasification process, the Wintershall-Schmalfoldt process, etc., meet all the requirements for a low-cost process under American conditions. Nor has any other process designed and experimentally operated at atmospheric pressure during the post-war period in this country appeared to fulfill all of the necessary conditions for a low-cost process.

The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering® is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering® is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering® is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. Emerging results from collaborative site activities demonstrate potential for generating significant value, which can reverse the trend of declining productivity due to feed grade depletion.CITATION:Walters, S G, 2017. "Process control technology holds very significant potential benefits for many mineral and coal processing plants. The impact can be expected in terms of performance improvements (e.g. increased throughput, better quality control, higher availability), through reduced operating costs (e.g. lower reagent consumptions, manpower reductions) and in the form of intangibles (e.g. reduced vulnerability to manpower turnover, increased productivity in the user group). However, the installation of a process control system will represent considerable capital expenditure and will generate an operating cost. No management team would approve the funding for such a project without some reasonable measure(s) of the profitability of a proposed system. This paper describes a methodology for addressing the justification problem. Of particular interest is the approach to quantifying performance improvements, frequently found to be the predominant benefit of process control.INTROPUCTIONProcess control has become widely recognized as an essential component of any processing operation. It has direct impact on productivity, process efficiency and product marketability. The reported pay backs associated with successful installations underscore this observation. As a consequence, many operators who have little in the way of process automation are looking to initiate control projects, while those who currently enjoy some level of automation are looking to upgrade existing control systems (= process + instrumentation + hardware + software + operators + support). While the emphasis here would appear to be on retrofit process control projects, new plants, or those currently in the design stage, will usually find themselves in one of these categories shortly after startup 1."

Com o objetivo de analisar o nível de aderência e a qualidade dos Indicadores Ambientais, divulgados pelas empresas dos setores: metalúrgico, siderúrgico e de mineração, que fazem parte da BM&Bovespa, foi feita uma pesquisa exploratória, qualitativa e de caráter documental, com base nos dados coletados nos Relatórios de Sustentabilidade GRI G3.1. Os Indicadores Ambientais foram analisados pelos métodos GAPIE (Grau de Aderência Plena) e GEE (Grau de Evidenciação Efetiva). Constatou-se que poucas empresas dos setores apresentam relátorios nomolde padrão internacional GRI, mesmo assim 58,33% apresentam algum tipo de evidenciação voluntária ambiental em seus web sites e 54,16% são ou já foram certificadas pelo ISSO 14001, demonstrando que a divulgação de ações de Responsabilidade Social Corporativa, ainda são tímidas nesses setores. Especificamente, os resultados obtidos através dos cálculos do GAPIE e di GEE mostram que, quando divulgados, os resultados são considerados positivos, levando-se em conta a média das empresas. Deve-se destacar que a pesquisa limita-se a análise apenas dos Indicadores Ambientais, nesse contexto os resultados dos cálculos de GEE e GAPIE não devem ser generalizados ao Relatório de Sustentabilidade como um todo.

Measurements from an old survey are being machine processed as a pilot project in the development of a computer-assisted method of structural mapping in shield areas. The key element in the system is a field data sheet which requires the geologist to determine a textural hierarchy in each exposure. The pilot system is limited to orientation analysis and utilizes a prior textural analysis, but this would not usually be a problem in utilizing the system ab initio for exploration. A data processing system of this general type offers promise of considerably increased productivity of field geologists by reducing compilation time and improved technical supervision through centralization of processing, and would make structural analysis an economically viable tool in mining exploration and development.

Rare-earth permanent magnetic roll separators, pioneered by our group a few years ago, have distinctly different operation characteristics compared to prior art electromagnetic separators of various types. Many new applications for dry high-intensity (or better: high-force) magnetic separation have been developed in a short time period. It has also been found that the new generation of separators generally are more efficient with regards to removal of weakly magnetic contaminants in glass and ceramic raw materials with minimum loss of valuable product compared to induced magnetic roll (lMR) separators. The latest development is in the area of production of clean magnetic concentrates at high recoveries. It is likely that the PERMROLLR magnetic separator will replace cross-belt and lift-type magnetic separators as a result of this most recent advance.   The paper will review the features of the PERMROLLR magnetic separator in comparison with other types of magnetic separators on the market and give examples on applications.

"In self-aerated flotation machines, the gas rate depends on operational variables (e.g. froth depth and impeller speed), pulp properties (e.g. solid content and viscosity), and reagent addition (e.g. type and concentration of frother). The gas rate has a strong correlation with the flotation performance by influencing the gas dispersion properties and froth retention time. A factorial experimental design was used to study how the gas dispersion properties, the froth retention time, and the flotation performance respond to changes in froth depth and impeller speed (as the most common operational variables). An in-depth understanding of the effects of impeller speed and froth depth on the gas dispersion properties, especially the bubble surface area flux and froth retention time, is necessary to improve operating strategies for self-aerated flotation machines. All experiments were carried out in a 50 m3 selfaerated flotation cell in an iron ore processing plant. The results showed that the froth depth affected the metallurgical performance mostly via changing the froth retention time. The impeller speed had two important impacts on the metallurgical performance via varying both the froth retention time and the bubble surface area flux in the froth and pulp zones, respectively. The interaction effects of the froth depth and impeller speed were also established. This allowed us to develop a strategy for operating selfaerated flotation machines based on varying the froth depth and impeller speed with regard to the cell duty. The characteristics of weak floor strata associated with actively mined coal seams in Illinois are very important from ground stability point of view and, in many cases, are the governing factors in determining the size of pillars and mine openings. Laboratory and field getotechnical characterization studies of weak floor strata were conducted at six mines during the period 1985-1988. Correlation analysis among engineering index properties, and laboratory, and field determined strength-deformation properties were conducted to identify simple tests which can be used to estimate ultimate bearing capacity and deformation properties of immediate floor strata. It was concluded that the ultimate bearing capacity (UBC) and strength- deformation properties of the weak floor strata can be estimated from simple tests such as, natural moisture content, atterberg limits, and axial swelling strain. Indirect tensile strength was found to be a better estimator of UBC than unconfined compressive strength.

The paper describes an improved process for the recovery, purification, and concentration of copper values from acidic dump leach liquors. The process employs a new liquid ion exchange material (LIX® 64 reagent) capable of separating copper values from iron and other impurities common to dump leach liquors in the typical pH range of 1.4-3.0. Properties and performance of the reagent are discussed. Design scale-up information for both pilot plants and commercial installations, including preliminary economics, are presented. Economic considerations include the production of electrolytic copper from the purified copper aqueous concentrate. INTRODUCTION Since the commercial acceptance of the liquid ion exchange process in the mineral processing industry, it has been predicted that a wide selection of chemical reagents to efficiently and economically separate many metals in solution under a wide range of conditions would be commercially available. Several years ago, General Mills began a basic research and development program to determine if it were possible to develop a reagent to extract economically metallic ion from existing process streams. Progress toward reaching this objective was reported in late 1963, when development of quantities of LIX -63 reagent, a highly selective reagent for the extraction of copper, was introduced. The properties of this reagent are described in a previous paper.' The development work with this reagent indicated that perhaps the largest potential application for a copper extractant, the treatment of acidic dump leach liquors, would not be economically possible with LIX-63 because of limitations of the reagent to extract copper below a pH of 3.0. The relatively small pH adjustment required with LIX-63 would result in a significant processing cost and the undesirable precipitation of ferric hydroxide from the liquor. This pointed to the need for another copper extractant which would extract copper from dump leach liquors without pH adjustment. General Mills was successful in synthesizing a molecule which does not have the pH limitation of the LIX-63, yet possesses the selectivity-solubility properties required of a metallic extractant. The resulting LIX-64 reagent broadens the pH range from which copper can be effectively extracted and separated from other metallic impurities. Of special significance is the fact that the reagent, LIX-64 was developed by combining the technical requirements of a specific problem in hydro-metallurgy with theoretical organic and physical chemical principles.

Coal mining operations are large-scale, long-term frameworks of high complexity. Mining organizations accumulate, develop, and leverage knowledge from diverse scientific and technological fields as a result of these operations. Both practical experience and existing literature indicate that knowledge management (KM) methods within the mining industry primarily target solving immediate technical challenges and operational requirements. However, they are not commonly regarded as strategic tools to enhance the performance and competitiveness of mining companies. Empirical evidence from the Greek mining industry suggests that the management of available knowledge is intricate, less effective, and dysfunctional. This paper presents a methodology based on the principles of quantitative research (QNR), collaboratively conducted with a group of mining experts, to assess the KM landscape in the Greek mining industry. The methodology involves a structured data collection framework using questionnaires, subsequent statistical analysis, a discussion on critical methodological aspects, and an interpretation of results focusing on key aspects useful for planners and designers of KM systems in the mining industry. Finally, the paper concludes by summarizing the methodology’s outcomes and proposing further perspectives for research.

Using a series-model of an automotive short range radar sensor (SRR) and a recently completed experimental radar system, field tests have been performed in a surface mine. It was examined, to what extent low-cost electronically scanning radar sensors can provide useful data for assistance systems on large scale mining machines. Simple sensors are useful for anti-collision safety zones or hopper car automation. The more complex and sophisticated experimental radar system using digital beam-forming can clearly detect and map the contours of trenches and slopes. The overall promising results refer to many more potential applications for electronically scanning radar in surface and underground mining as a reliable alternative to mechanical laser scanners.

This paper presents an analysis of the production data for the period 1861 - 1953 from hydrothermal gold-silver deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield. To directly compare the metal content of the deposits a figure of ounces of gold equivalents (oz gold equivalent) is calculated from the value of the gold-silver bullion produced from each deposit. Frequency distributions for ore tonnage and oz gold equiv. appear to be lognormal and show a high proportion of very small deposits, with 90 per cent less than 100 000 tonnes. The deposits when plotted in order of size fall roughly on a smooth curve which suggests that the size distribution is not random. A large proportion (68 per cent) of the total gold-silver extracted from the Hauraki district was contained in the largest deposit û Waihi. A technique used for predicting undiscovered mineral resources is ZipfÆs law, which relates the size of an item to its rank order. The figures for ounce gold equivalents from the major Hauraki deposits fit ZipfÆs law remarkably well. Taking Waihi at 6.8 million oz gold equivalent as the rank one deposit, Thames is number five and Karangahake number seven. A Zipf plot indicates that down to rank 100 (68 000 oz gold equivalent) only 28 per cent of the total gold-silver resource in the Hauraki Goldfield has been extracted. A further 72 per cent or 25.4 million oz gold equivalent, including the deposits of rank 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10, are undiscovered. However, since some deposits will be deeply buried under younger rocks and others will be under the sea only a proportion of the total resource will be discoverable.

No presente trabalho analisou-se a influência de diferentes microestruturas obtidas através de tratamentos térmicos, sobre a resistência à corrosão de um aço microligado, na solução A segundo a norma NACE TM0284-11. Foi utilizada chapa de um aço destinado à conformação de tubo API 5L X65 para confeccionar as amostras. Algumas destas foram submetidas a tratamentos térmicos (Temperado, Temperado seguido de revenimento, esferoidização) e o restante foi utilizado tal como recebido. Os materiais foram submetidos a ensaios de polarização linear, num eletrólito composto por 0,5% ácido acético e 5% cloreto de sódio (solução A, NACE TM0284-11) fazendo-se purga com N2 e injeções de H2S. Foram realizados exames em microscópio óptico. Os valores de resistência de polarização mostraram que a ordem decrescente de resistência à corrosão de acordo com o tratamento térmico foi: (Esferoidizada) > (Tal Como Recebido) > (Temperada, Temperada e Revenida). Tal fato pode ser explicado pela quantidade de interfaces presentes em cada microestrutura (cementita globulizada em matriz ferrítica; ferrita com perlita; martensita e martensita revenida), sendo que quanto menor a área de interfaces, maior o valor para resistência à corrosão.

The paper examines the development of rock movement between a longwall extraction horizon and the surface for a fully caved mining situation. Physical modelling has been used to examine the mechanics of ground movement and the propagation of fractures around the longwall working. The paper discusses dimensional analysis, model construction and measurement technique and data processing of the results into effective graphical forms for further study.

With a return to coal as a major energy source for many companies, more emphasis is being placed on recovery of coal from areas that were formally considered uneconomical to mine. Increasing emphasis is being placed on production from low coal (seam height 48 inches or less) as high coal seams are depleated. Mining in restrictive spaces requires unusual work postures that can turn easy jobs into demanding ones. The objectives of this research were: (1) to evaluate the job demands associated with low coal mining, (2) to survey the anthropometry, strength, and aerobic capacity of low coal miners to determine if they differ from the U. S. population, and (3) to recommend, on the basis of available information, optimal job and work station design for low coal mining. This research effort was supported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The male and female anthropometry with the exception of weight and circumferential dimension, was quite similar to the comparison population. Back strength for male and female miners was significantly lower than the industrial worker population. This can be one of the contributing factors of low back problems in mining. Shoveling, timbering, and helpers tasks were physiologically demanding activities. However, due to the frequent stoppage of work, adequate rest was usually available. If work stoppage is corrected, then better work/rest schedules are essential.

For drilling large diameter holes for deep foundations, the common and distressing difficulty of long standing has been in coping with ground containing rocky formations and boulders. Where geological formation contains weathered rock or boulders, or deep rock socket is specified, drilling equipment occasionally is found to be unable to drill through and therefore will need supplementary equipment and procedures. Incentive of the MACH Drill Development has been to realize a capable drilling system for rocks of weathered to fresh rock without losing its applicability to usual overburden. Through seven decades' experience of manufacturing and operation of boring machines, the best features of all sorts of drillhead are known such as the drag bit, wing bit, auger bit, diamond bit, rock roller bit, down-the-hole hammer bit, etc.

The mining industry worldwide is facing a tremendous shortage of minerals engineers in all fields of specialization. For instance, in Australia the skills shortage in the mining industry has been identified as one of the top risks facing the mining industry. In Namibia most minerals engineers employed are expatriates, with some being Namibians who studied abroad. The minerals engineering programmes at the Polytechnic of Namibia are still in their infancy. These programmes were designed to meet the mining industry skills needs. Being young has its advantages in that lessons can be learnt from older minerals education institutions that went through similar challenges. However, this does not imply just copying and implementing their approaches, since the context differs and, to ensure sustainability of the minerals education programmes, curricula have to be customized to the local context. This paper reviews the interventions made by the Polytechnic of Namibia in order to ensure the sustainability of its minerals education programmes. The methodology consisted of an extensive literature review, a status quo analysis of the mining and process engineering department, identifying the gaps between the current state and desired state, and mapping the goals and strategic actions required to progress to the desired state. The following factors were identified as major threats to the sustainability of minerals education at the Polytechnic of Namibia: the quality of students, low student enrolment rates, low pass rates in science and mathematics, shortage of academic staff, dwindling government funding, and limited involvement of the mining industry. The major outcomes of this research comprise the detailed strategic actions employed by the Polytechnic of Namibia to address the threats to sustainability of its minerals education programmes.
