THERE is not the slightest doubt that the present recoveries of valuable minerals by the Broken Hill mills could be improved, and that further machinery would be installed for the purpose if it could be assured that a high price of metals would be maintained; but concentration, like all other com¬mercial propositions, is a question of profit and loss, and no sensible metallurgist would carry out his work in such a manner as to obtain high recoveries at a financial loss to his company. There is a point in all concentration at which the added money obtained from the higher recovery of minerals is balanced by the extra cost of obtaining the last part of the recovery; a wise metallurgist will be content with his work before his working-expenditure reaches this point. To a casual observer, the work being done by the various Broken Hill mills is identically the same. A closer investigation will show that this is far from being the case, for it is a remarkable fact that, although the larger mines extend over a length of approximately only 2 miles, such a difference in the physical and chemical properties of the ores exists that, from the first reduction downwards, special treatment is necessary in each case, and hardly any two mills are identical in operation. The details of this paper refer directly- to the work of one . particular mill in Broken Hill, for the reason that the ore from each mine presents special difficulties and requires its own special treatment. I have selected the mill referred to because it has been constructed and modified under my supervision.

The excavatability of the rock mass in a proposed open pit mine at Globe-Progress has been assessed. The rock mass was initially evaluated by determining variations in seismic velocity and by using the Revised Size-Strength Chart. These two assessments should be performed during the feasibility or early investigation stages of a project. A complete rock mass excavatability assessment using a suite of geological and geotechnical properties was then performed using three methods: RMR System; Modified Rippability Rating; and a productivity estimation method. These three methods should be applied during the investigation and design stages of a project. The preliminary assessments show that most of the open pit rock mass is expected to be rippable. The complete assessment differentiates weak, fair and good rock masses within the open pit. Weak rock mass exists along the Globe-Progress Shear zone, located along the northern and eastern pit walls and also in the western pit wall where the Chemist Shop Fault is located are both regions are expected to be diggable. Relatively weak rock mass also exists along the Globe-Progress Shear axial hinge. The Globe-Progress Shear limbs are generally fair to good rock where moderate to hard ripping should be expected.

The French research institute, INERIS, requested the assistance of the CSIR?s Division of Mining Technology in developing further precautionary measures against explosions in their collieries. In response to this approach, an on-board active suppression system was adapted to meet their mining requirements. This system is used on tunnelling machines in Germany where the machine is positioned in the middle of the tunnel, which is therefore not much wider than the machine itself. With this configuration, the machine is never away from the tunnel face during the cutting cycle. As a result, the possible volume in front of the machine of combustible gas requiring suppression is less than 50 m3. In South Africa this technology has been adapted to suit a two-cut mining method which entails greater distances from the face and thus much larger volumes of methane mixtures requiring suppression. The particular configuration of the Explo-Stop® system being investigated required the suppression of possible methane ignition volumes of up to 180 m3of a 9% per volume methane/air mixture. The volume is a consequence of the large cross-sectional area of French underground workings and of the two-cut mining method used in France. In order to take the second cut in the coal seam, the machine is pulled back a maximum distance of 4 m, leaving an air pocket in which gas can accumulate. The machine-mounted system is required to effectively suppress any flame ignited by such a large accumulated volume of methane. The results of the protocol tests done at Kloppersbos showed that the system was capable of suppressing all simulated methane ignitions for the prescribed conditions. This was achieved with a temperature increase of less than a 100°C at the operator?s position and without any flame being detected at this position.

"The rate of progress in the last three years in the development of differential flotation has been rapid beyond the realization of most people. Differential flotation is no longer a ""delicate"" and unreliable process, but is now in wide use. Its ""safety"" is due to the wide use of chemicals which either depress or enhance floatability by definite modification of surfaces.The extent of the development and reliability of differential flotation methods any be emphasized by pointing out that there are now several customall-flotation"" plants in this country treating complex lead-zinc-iron ores from widely separated mines. While these ores differ in chemical composition and apparently in physical nature, the various ores treated in such a plant are passed through the same crushing and grinding equipment and through the same flotation machines and flow sheet with only slight changes, if any, in quantity and kind of chemicals and oils added.Some of the development in differential flotation is due to intelligent research on the part of well-trained chemists and metallurgists; much of It must be attributed to empirical testing.Much of the success in differential flotation is due to more care being given to constant conditions with regard to such factors as (1) fineness of grinding, (2) density of pulp entering flotation machines, (3) quantity and constancy of oils and chemicals added to the pulp, and (4) place of addition of reagents, and time of ""conditioning"" treatment of pulp with reagents."

Os fluidos de corte são empregados no processo de retificação com o intuito de lubrificar e refrigerar a peça/rebolo, além de amenizar problemas que afetam a integridade superficial da peça e também melhoram a eficiência do processo. Os fluidos de corte são muito utilizados na retificação, porém são tóxicos, dificilmente degradáveis e nocivos ao meio ambiente. Dessa maneira, é pertinente a formulação de fluidos menos agressivos. Neste trabalho, avaliou-se o desempenho de óleos vegetais como fluidos de corte em comparação com o fluido de corte integral no processo de retificação do aço ABNT 4340 temperado e revenido com dureza média de 52 HRc. O desempenho dos fluidos consistiu na análise de rugosidade, formação de espuma e odor. A caracterização dos óleos foi realizada pela viscosidade, densidade, ponto de fulgor, corrosão, índice de acidez total, índice de iodo e de refração. Os resultados mostraram que as peças retificadas com óleos vegetais apresentaram rugosidades próximas às peças usinadas com fluido integral. Na caracterização, os óleos vegetais apresentaram maior viscosidade que o integral e suas densidades foram próximas. No resfriamento, os óleos vegetais foram capazes de resfriar mais as peças que o integral, além de corroer menos. Nos outros aspectos analisados, o óleo de soja foi o que apresentou melhor desempenho. Esses resultados comprovam a eficiência dos óleos vegetais e viabilidade do uso no processo.

The influence of different grinding methods on the shape characteristics of magnetite particles was investigated. Also, the effect of particle shape on the flotation of the magnetite, both alone and in the presence of quartz particles, was investigated. The shape characteristics of the magnetite particles were measured and calculated from images obtained by scanning electron microscopy via an image analysis system. The flotation tests were performed using a laboratory flotation cell. Results showed that in the -250+212 µm and -106+75 µm size fractions, ball mill products have a higher elongation value than rod mill products, while in the -150+125 µm size fraction, rod mill products have a higher elongation value. Particles with higher elongation values and lower roundness values have a higher flotation kinetic constant. Furthermore, the influence of magnetite particle shape on flotation is greater, and the flotation kinetic constant is higher, in the presence of quartz particles than in the flotation of magnetite alone Keywords shape, elongation value, flotation kinetics, magnetite.

"The results of humus and overburden geochemical surveys over the Doyon, Bousquet and Page-Williams gold ore deposits are presented.These studies show that humus sampling for gold gives negative results over the Doyon deposit. The lack of response is probably caused by the presence of 1 m of relatively impermeable glaciolacustrine clay and silt that overlies 1 m to 2 m of till over the surface expression of the ore zone. By contrast, positive responses for gold occur in humus samples over the Page Williams A and C gold deposits. The ""A"" ore zone is covered by several metres of exotic calcareous till over 0.5 m to 1 m of older, locally derived till. Anomalous values for gold in humus range from 10 to 35 ppb over the orebody. Overburden over the ""C"" ore zones is much thinner, generally it consists of less than 2 m of sandy till. Trenching humus anomalies that range from 10 to 1360ppb Au uncovered the gold mineralization. The geochemical dispersal trains in till from the Doyon orebody and the Page-Williams ""A"" zone are relatively short (i.e. less than 200 m) because both deposits occur in the lee of bedrock highs that shielded them from extensive glacial quarrying. Dispersal trains from all three pyritic gold deposits can be defined using either the fine fraction or heavy mineral fraction of the till.The intensity of the gold in till anomalies over the ore zones is variable. Therefore, it would be misleading to attach rigid significant threshold gold values to overburden drilling results. Each case must be evaluated based on bedrock topography, sample density, overburden type, thickness of till, as well as size, type and orientation of the target exposed to glacial erosion."

DISILICIDE coatings, MeSi2, on refractory metals are usually grown by a solid-state diffusion reaction similar to the parabolic oxidation of metals. Two or more silicide compounds occur in each of the binary silicon-refractory metal systems. When an adequate source of silicon is available during the coating process, the lower silicide compounds are usually not formed.1 However, during service application of the coated refractory metal, continued heating causes further diffusion and growth of the lower silicides. A study of the growth kinetics of the lower silicides in the molybdenum and tungsten binary systems with silicon was previously reported.2 The present study is concerned with the growth kinetics of Ta5Si3 and Cb5Si3, formed as conjugate layers between TaSi2/Ta and CbSi2/Cb diffusion couples, respectively. Diffusion couples consisting of disilicide-coated tantalum and columbium sheet coupons were subjected to diffusion heat treatments, cross-sectioned, and scanned by an electron-microprobe analyzer to determine the relative X-ray intensity profiles. These profiles correspond closely to concentration profiles for the constituents, and were used to identify phases and locate phase boundaries. The analysis of a single specimen after a diffusion-anneal provides only one value for the Me5Si3 phase thickness, corresponding to the time and temperature of the diffusion treatment. Consequently, each isothermal curve showing the rate of accumulation or depletion of silicide phases required several samples with identical diffusion temperatures but different diffusion times. The disilicide coatings were prepared by pyrolizing commercially pure silane in a hydrogen carrier gas. The hydrogen was purified by passage through a palladium membrane. Commercially pure tantalum and columbium sheet metal coupons, 0.005 by $ by 2 in., were used. All of the coated specimens for each system were prepared together in a single group in order to minimize coating variations among individual specimens. During pyrolysis, the brightness temperature was maintained at 1200°C. With suitable flow rates at this temperature, only the disilicides of tantalum and columbium were formed in detectable amounts. Coated specimens were subjected to diffusion an-neals in a tube furnace with automatic proportional control within ±10°C. A H2-Ar mixture, deoxidized and dried over anhydrous magnesium perchlorate, was used to prevent oxidation during the diffusion anneal. Diffusion couples were cross-sectioned, polished and examined with an A.R.L. electron-microprobe X-ray analyzer. Both metal constituents in each specimen were simultaneously scanned using a 1-p beam spot size and either 1- or 2-µ steps. Analyses were performed using the Ka radiation of columbium and silicon, and the La, radiation of tantalum. For all specimens, an acceleration voltage of 30 kv was used, and integration was made against the specimen current. LiF and A DP monochrometers were used to isolate characteristic radiations. Three or more traverses were made on each specimen. The intensity scales were adjusted using the constituent metals and standard samples of the silicide compounds which had been verified by X-ray diffraction. The relative intensity profiles were used directly, in conjunction with the standard samples, to identify compounds and phase boundaries. The stoichiometries differ considerably between the silicide compounds in both systems, and the homogeneity range for these silicide compounds is narrow. These characteristics result in marked differences in relative intensities of the fluorescing elements—differences which permit ready identification of phases and phase boundaries. The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. A new 2.5D airborne electromagnetic (AEM) algorithm has been developed by Intrepid Geophysics and Jovan Silic & Associates. The advantage of 2.5D (2D geology, 3D source) AEM inversion in 3D geological mapping applications and identification of conductive drilling targets, compared to the more commonly used conductivity-depth imaging (CDI) transforms or 1D inversions, are demonstrated using examples from banded iron formations (BIFs) and other geological settings. We show emerging AEM systems are capable of providing estimates of economic rock unit thicknesses, dips and fault definition at an accuracy that mitigates the need for pattern drilling.The 2.5D inversion application used in this work and described in Silic et al (2015) is a substantially changed version of ArjunAir (Wilson, Raiche and Sugeng, 2006), a product of CSIRO/AMIRA project P223F. The changes include a new forward model algorithm and a new inversion solver. The application enables the accurate simulation of 3D source excitation for full domain models inclusive of topography, non-conforming boundaries and very high resistivity contrasts. Solution is accurate for a geoelectrical cross-section, which is relatively constant along a strike length that exceeds the AEM system footprint.The major innovation includes a new inversion solver with adaptive regularisation, which allows the incorporation of a misfit to the reference model and the model smoothness function.Memory usage has been dramatically reduced and is estimated prior to execution. For speed the software has been parallelised using Intel message passing interface (MPI) and can be used on standard computing hardware or computing clusters. Data from survey lines with lengths exceeding 100 km can be inverted on high end laptop computers.We allow flexibility in the selection of components and in the estimation of noise.AEM inversion examples are shown for surveys from BIFs, base metals (volcanogenic massive sulfides) and geological mapping projects and the results are compared with known geology and drilling. Stope support systems, typically consisting of props and packs, are used extensively in the gold and platinum mining industry to stabilize the rock mass in the excavation vicinity and to reduce the hazard associated with rockfalls and rockbursts. The design of stope support systems was historically based predominantly on past experience and practices, and cost considerations. The recent development of a new and improved support design methodology, has led to the potential for significant increases in worker safety and support cost savings. This paper reviews some of the fundamental rock mass and support criteria that form the basis of the improved support design methodology. The considered design criteria are the height of potential fall; quasi-static stope closure rates; dynamic stope closure rates; compressive hangingwall stresses; discontinuity spacing, orientation and interface properties; effect of support length (stoping width); effect of compression rate; consistency of support performance; a real coverage; support spacing; and zone of support influence. The proposed support design methodology combines both the zone of influence and key block stability theories, resulting in optimized support systems for rockfall and rockburst conditions. The site-specific methodology consists of two stages: (i) a tributary area analysis, and (ii) a zone of support influence and a stability analysis, considering hangingwall failure due to buckling, shear and block rotation, which gives maximum safe spacing of individual support units. The methodology is suitable for designing support systems for both blocky hangingwalls and hangingwalls fragmented by face-parallel extension and shear fractures.

Augered, cast-in-place piles (ACIP) have become a very common foundation type in Atlanta and the Southern Piedmont Province as well as much of the United States in the past 20 years. Prior to the introduction of ACIP foundations in Atlanta, the most common deep foundation type was Raymond piles. Raymond piles are basically a driven, thin-walled step-tapered steel pile filled with concrete. Drilled piers were also relatively common and continue to be used, particularly in shallow bedrock or high column load situations. Driven piles, including pipes, H-sections, and timber piles were previously common with working loads typically in the 30 to 50-ton range. Initially, ACIP foundations had similar allowable capacities, however, over time improvements in installation techniques and equipment have resulted in an increase in allowable ACIP capacities. Correspondingly, they have become a more cost-effective and trusted foundation for geotechnical and structural engineers. Over the next several decades many other deep foundation alternatives began to lose popularity. ACIP are one of the predominant deep foundations in Atlanta and the Southern Piedmont today. Although ACIP foundations have widespread popularity in the private sector, they have not been readily accepted currently by government transportation agencies. ACIP may be used by some of the smaller municipalities, but to the author's knowledge, have not been used with regularity by larger, state agencies.

If a conductor traversed by an electric current is broken, a conduction forms in the air between the two broken ends of the wire. This conduction manifests itself in an initial phase by an electric spark and, in a second phase, by an arc if the the circuit continues to supply sufficient power. This arc goes out when the distance between the two ends of the conductor becomes sufficiently large. If the break occurs in an explosive atmosphere, the energy contributed by the arc can cause an explosion. To avoid such accidents, electric circuits that may be utilized in hazardous atmospheres can be made "intrinsically safe". The investigation which we conducted is part of a research project on the intrinsic safety of arcs of high intensity but short duration, in the case of resistive circuits. We developed an electronic system which makes it possible to limit the duration of an arc at the level of the break of a conductor traversed by a current with a possible maximum intensity of 80 amperes. This experimental device for monitoring and measuring the parameters of the arc has shown that arcs of high intensity but with a duration limited to a few microseconds do not ignite an explosive methane-air mixture.

The modulus of elasticity of rock material (Ei) is an important rock property that is used as an input parameter in the design stage of engineering projects such as dam and tunnel constructions, mining excavations, and so forth. However, determination of the modulus of elasticity is sometimes difficult to obtain by laboratory tests because high-quality cores are required. For this reason, empirical methods for predicting the modulus of elasticity of rock material have been popular research topics in recently published literature. In this study, the relationships between the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), unit weight (?) and modulus of elasticity for different types of rocks were analysed by using 177 data obtained from laboratory tests carried out on cores obtained from drill holes within the area of the Kadiköy-Kartal Metro line (Istanbul, Turkey). "Water quality plays an important role in oxide flotation. The effects on selective flotation of fine (1-16 um) pyrochlore of two types of water used at the Niobec concentrator, potable and plant recycle, were assessed. Several pyrochlore collectors and silicate depressants were tested. Water effects were different for each mineral-reagents) combination. In general plant recycle water decreased selectivity and increased reagent consumption. Interpretation of results is given in terms of electrokinetic effects, hydrolysis of cations, and mineral-collector interactions. Two techniques of treatment for plant recycle water, cation precipitation and zeolite adsorption were assessed. The former was found to be more effective under the tested conditions but recycle water continued to give poorer selectivity than the potable.INTRODUCTIONWater quality plays an important role in selective flotation. Specific effects have been reported by many workers (1-6) and in general the better the water quality the more selective is flotation. Water composition depends on origin and the minerals being processed. For example pulp containing salt-type minerals (calcite, apatite, dolomite) will contain more Ca and Mg cations than that from a sulphide deposit. Another source of water contamination is the flotation reagents added to the pulp, particularly if water recycling is practiced."

The cross-belt sampler is a device that is very widely used even though it has not been ratified by the Standards associations. This paper is concerned with the bias testing of two cross-belt sampler designs against stopped belt samples and a cross-stream cutter at the belt end. The bias analysis is carried out using size distribution as the analyte and conventional t-testing and the Hotelling T squared test, which are compared for their effectiveness. The paper considers the issue of detectable bias and the statistical planning of bias tests.

"The challenges encountered in the design and construction of mines and their process facilities today are becoming more intense and the engineering more competitive. The need to incorporate new techno1ogy to compensate for ever rising costs is always present, but its application in the harsh environment of Northern Canada increasingly requires the inclusion of new proven methods and innovative approaches to arrive at economically attractive projects.This paper deals with the development of the process design for the Cullaton Lake Gold Mine in the Northwest Territories. Particular emphasis is given to the interaction of the imposed construction and testwork schedules, and their effect on certain process decisions.The challenge that faced the project team may be defined by the following factors:1. A schedule which required that metallurgical testing, engineering, and procurement and delivery of all equipment and construction supplies should be complete within a period of ten months.2. Transportation of all personnel, equipment and supplies to the site by airlift, as no road was available or affordable.3. A six week period when transportation to the site was impossible.4. The extremes of temperature beyond the tree line in the Northwest Territories.5. A complete lack of infrastructure in the area."
