"Under the 4-in-1 recycling system, Taiwan producers and importers who using packaging containers have responsibility to pay the recycling fees for recycling the waste packaging containers they produced or imported; while the collectors/recycling plants who collect/sort/recover waste packaging containers receive subsidy for conducting recycling. A reasonable pricing for recycling charge and subsidy is a way for sustainability of the recycling. The objective of this study is to provide an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes. This study employs a regression analysis and cost adjusting model to link the factors used for calculating product charge and recycling subsidy on recycling waste packaging containers with socio-economic indicators, raw material prices, wholesale prices, and secondary material prices. Study results provide estimated models to EPA in Taiwan for amending product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes.IntroductionUnder ""4-in-1"" recycling system in Taiwan, waste packaging containers are officially announced to be recycled. The waste packaging containers announced to be recycled include iron cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, paper containers, aluminum foiled paper packs. In order to compensate the recycling system, EPA charges associated manufacturers and importers for recycling fee and subsidies recyclers to create the economic incentive for raising recycling performance. Basically, the budget for subsidy recyclers is from the recycling charge. That means if we want to increase recycling efficiency by increasing subsidy to recyclers then the manufacturers and importers have to pay more for reaching financial balance of recycling foundation. The benefit of recyclers and fee payers are always conflicted. The recycling charge and subsidy is thus argued by fee payers and subsidy receivers all the time. A reasonable pricing for recycling charge and subsidy is the only way to keep the recycling system sustainable. Moreover, a suitable mechanism has to be changed along with the changing social economic condition. The recycling performances and effectiveness of this recycling system is also highly dependent on the pricing mechanism. This study intends to provide an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic change. Related previous studies about recycling system in Taiwan with its performance include Hsu and Kuo (2002, 2005), Bor, Chien, and Hsu (2004) and Hsu (1999). Hsu and Kuo [1] estimated total production values of recycling and evaluated the performance of recycling performance based upon the estimated production values."

"The three-dimensional deformation of a continuously cast slab was modeled into two-dimensional deformation by developing the solidified shell of the slab. The developed solidified shell was divided into rectangular elements. The thermal strain produced as the slab is wi thdrawn over one roll spacing in the casting direction was calculated from the temperature change during that time and the increment of the geometrical unbending strain during the time was calculated from the change in the radius of curvature of the slab by assuming that the neutral axis of bending is located at the mid-thickness of the slab and that the transverse section of the slab is kept in a plane during unbending. These strains were imparted to each element as initial strains. The interaction between the elements and the overall deformation of the solidified shell were analyzed by the finite element method.The analysis was performed on a slab being cast on a machine of the circular arc type with progressive unbending. The following findings were obtained as a result. The effect of unbending is spread in the upstream and downstream directions of the slab by the shear deformation of the narrow and wide faces. As the shear deformation increases, the strain in the unbending zone decreases and the strain outside of the unbending zone increases. The effects of secondary cooling conditions, slab size, radius of caster circular arc section, compression casting, etc., were also analyzed. IntroductionTo develop a method for preventing the internal cracking of continuously cast slabs, it is important to acurately analyze the deformation of the slab and this subject has been extensively investigated. Many researchers, including the present authors, have analyzed slab bulging. (1)- (11) Analysis has also been made of thermal deformation that assumes importance in continuous casting of small-section blooms.(12)-(18) However, unbending deformation, an extremely important subject for continuous casters of the circular arc type, has not been fully analyzed."

Reported is work done on processing of steel mill effluents in the areas of dewatering and separation. Much of the waste from these operations is in the form of sludges from scrubbers, in which the primary constituent is iron oxide. Recycling of the sludge&apos;s magnetic fraction has become economically attractive in order to reduce the overall volume placed in landfills. The objective of this research is to determine the effectiveness of combining magnetic and cyclonic forces, to recover iron oxide particles from waste water stream, while decreasing the volume to be disposed. Three different size hydrocyclones, operating within the field of a quadripole magnet, were tested using varying feed pulp densities of magnetite, magnetite/dolomite, blast furnace (BF), and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slurries. In the first three cases, the percentage of magnetics recovered increased to greater than 95%. The limiting operational factors are; high pulp density for small cyclones, which can cause flow blockage within the magnet field, and extremely fine particle sizes (<2 microns), which cannot be recovered. The results indicate this technique can remove virtually all the magnetic particles from some steel effluents to a 40-50% weight percent solids pulp, on an in line continuous basis.

The paper describes the development of components in an lntegrated Furnace Control system for shielded-arc smelting focusing on operation and crucible integrity enhancement. The paper reviews the mechanisms of power, feed and energy input and losses into the shielded-arc smelting process and describes the furnace control system module development and integration to tailor the process. The ultimate success of a furnace control system application is transfer of knowledge, training, and operational support during furnace start-up and ramp-up phases and a model for how this has been achieved is discussed. The control modules of a shielded-arc laterite smelting furnace are described in detail including measured results and screen captures from application in a laterite smelting furnace. This paper focuses on developments in Integrated Furnace Controls tailored to shielded-arc laterite smelting but development of common furnace control modules for improved crucible and tapping operation integrity applied to other furnace processes, including immersed-arc smelting, is also covered. During the electrorefining of lead by the Betts process, ionic concentration gradients become established within the slimes layer. These gradients contribute to precipitation of secondary products and to gradients in electrode potential applied to slimes filaments, and thereby affect the dissolution of noble impurities. This paper describes the experimental results obtained when a typical lead anode was dissolved under galvanostatic conditions with concurrent interruption of current at preset slimes thicknesses. Reference electrodes were incorporated within the lead anode to follow the potential gradients across the slimes electrolyte. Samples of the slimes electrolyte were withdrawn in-situ and their compositional changes were related to transport processes across the slimes layer. Upon current interruption the anodic overpotential decays, first abruptly (as the uncompensated ohmic drop disappears), and then slowly (due to the presence of a back E.M.F. created by ionic concentration gradients that decay slowly). Current interruption measurements showed that: (A) concentration gradients exist across the slimes layer, (B) inner solution potentials within the slimes layer can be larger than those measured from reference electrodes located in the bulk electrolyte, (C) secondary products can shift the inner solution potential to negative values that reverse upon re-dissolution and (D) ionic diffusion is seen upon current interruption but it is complex and difficult to model due to the presence of processes that can support the passage of internal currents. SEM and X-ray diffraction analysis of the slimes filaments indicated that secondary reactions leading to the formation of Si02 and PbF2 take place (mainly at the anodelslimes interface). The onset of these reactions and their relationship to the Pb-F-Si-H20 Eh-pH diagram are linked to the industrial operation of the Betts process.

"The innovative development of multiphase slag in hot-metal treatment has attracted considerable attention due to the reduction of CaO consumption and minimal environmental emission. In order to improve the efficiency of dephosphorization and to reutilize the waste-slag as an alternative source of phosphate ores, it is important to increase the distribution ratio of P2Os between the solid solution (2CaO· SiO2-3CaO· P2O 5) and liquid slag. An investigation was carried out to study the effects ofNa2O and B2O3 on the distribution ratio of P2Os, the results indicated that the increase ofNa2O would enhance the distribution ratio of P2Os with the formation of solid solution (2CaO·SiO2-Na2O·2CaO·P2Os), while B2O3 has the opposite function, and changes the morphology of solid solution. The study would provide an instructive way for the design of multiphase slag and re-utilization of waste-slag.IntroductionIn order to meet the increasing demand for high quality low-phosphorus steel, it requires a high efficient hot metal dephosphorization process. The current slag system for hot metal treatment contains large amount of solid CaO dispersed in liquid slag, which introduced a large amount of CaO consumption due to its low solubility, especially when CaF2 was restricted due to the environmental concerns. Therefore, new refming method to improve the utilization efficiency of CaO by using a solid/liquid coexisting multiphase slag was proposed, and the studies regarding to solid solution formation mechanism, mass transfer behavior of phosphorus and the phase relationship for multi-phase slag have been conducted. [1-6]Normally, hot metal dephosphorization slag consists of CaO--SiOz-FeO--P2O 5, and it has been approved that 2CaO·SiO2 forms a solid solution with 3CaO·P2Os at the hot metal treatment temperature over a wide range of compositions. [7] Kitamura et al [8] pointed out that the (2CaO·SiO2-3CaO·P2O 5) solid solution plays an important role in dephosphorization, and it has been regarded as an absorbents for phosphorus to lower the phosphorus content in liquid phase, which makes it more capable for future dephosphorization. l Besides, the multiphase slag has the potential to be recycled as a source of phosphorus, if the (2CaO· SiO2-3CaO· P2O 5) solid solution could contain high phosphorus content, and it can be separated from FeiO matrix 8hase due to the large difference of their magnetic properties under the strong magnetic field. Lime addition to acid mine drainage (AMD) leads to precipitation, predominantly of metal hydroxides and calcium sulfate, and is the benchmark for remediation by precipitation. Geo2 Limited of Melbourne, Australia has developed and patented a novel alternative precipitation scheme based on the formation of mixed valency, M(I1)-M(III), hydroxide sulfate salts. When the composition of AMD is appropriate, the Green Precipitate Process provides a useful and more effective alternative to conventional liming. The characteristics and utility of the Green Precipitate Process are described in terms of the underlying chemistry, and a case study where the Green Precipitate process outperforms conventional liming. A mobile pilot pipe reactor rig which was built by Geo2 to demonstrate the process, and used successfully in both Australia and the United States, is described.

The behavior of halide impurities in pyrometallurgical processes such as Wealtz kiln and MF process has been discussed based on the thermochemical data and the reported data of PbO activity in PbCl2-PbO melts. The role of PbCl(g) has been estimated to be significant in the chloridization evaporation reaction. From reported data on the PbO activity in PbC12-PbO melts, activity of PbCl2 has been calculated by the numerical integration of Gibbs-Duhem equation, and the stability domains and the composition of the liquid phase as well as the vapor pressure of PbCl2 have been estimated as functions of log P2HCI/PH2O and temperature. From the discussion of the path during cooling process on the log P2 HCI . PH2O vs. temperature diagram, the authors proposed a possible dechioridization process that utilize water vapor as a dechloridizer for the direct precipitation of PbO from gas phase.

The hydrothermal enrichment of chalcopyrite by CuSO, occurs in the absence of oxidizing or reducing reagants. Kinetics of the enrichment process were determined under autoclave conditions in the temperature range of 398°K (125°C) to 473°K (200°C). Covellite (CuS) formed first, followed by digenite (Cu,,,S), with rejection of iron to the solution. The kinetics have been explained by a model which includes diffusion during the first stage formation of covellite followed by surface reaction rate control when digenite be. The effects of particle size, temperature, pH, and cupric and ferrous ion concentrations on the leaching kinetics were examined. Additions of ferrous ion to solution markedly increased the rate of reaction.

The Black Pine sediment-hosted, disseminated gold deposit is located in Cassia County, Idaho. Gold mineralization occurs in flat-lying zones 50 to 100 feet thick. Total geological ore reserves are 5.6 million tons grading 0.049 oz/t. Ore types include: non-carbonaceous, oxidized ore; carbonaceous, sulfide ore; and carbonaceous, partly oxidized ore. In the oxidized ores, native gold grains commonly occur in porous hematite pseudomorphs that have replaced disseminated framboidal and euhedral pyrite, and this gold should be readily leached by cyanide solutions. Approximately 4 % of the native gold observed in the oxidized ores is locked within gangue and may be refractory to cyanide solutions. Native gold has not been observed in the unoxidized samples, all of which are characterized by primary sulfides. It is suspected that the bulk of the gold mineralization in the sulfide ore occurs as submicroscopic particles within pyrite and will be refractory to cyanidation. It is believed that much or all of the gold observed in the oxidized samples was originally in pyrite but was released and re-precipitated during oxidation. The degree of oxidation of the pyrite and the presence/absence of preg-robbing carbonaceous material is used as a guide in delimiting zones of mineralization amenable to heap leaching.

"Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a valid environmental evaluation method and enterprise environmental management tool used in industrial ecology areas. In this paper LCA was newly used to evaluate the environmental impact of manufacturing of alumina by Bayer process in china from two aspects of logistics and energy flow, GaBi software acted as analysis tools with evaluation model established, and several environmental impact assessment criteria were selected based on the actually typical date of Bayer alumina producing process. Evaluation results show that alumina manufacturing by the Bayer process has a great impact on the global warming and human health of respiration, even roasting process gives rise to the greatest impact of winter fog index. Scenario analysis proposed ways of reducing environmental load caused by Bayer process including: (1) the economic and efficient use of mineral processing technology; (2) optimization of energy use, saving power consumption or the use of new more economical source of energy; (3) actively promote the use of innovated technology and equipment in alumina manufacturing and waste such as red mud utilization process.1 IntroductionSince 2002, China is already the world's biggest producer of aluminium, in 2007, China aluminum production has accounted for above 1/3 all over the world, 2009 for 13 million tons and to the end of 2010, China aluminum production is expected increased to be over 15 million ton [1,2,3]. While as the raw material for producing aluminum the alumina production in china has up to 19.46 million tons of the world's total quarter in 2007, by the end of 2009 China alumina production has achieve to 23.78 million tons [4,5]. China has rich bauxite resources with proven reserves about 23 million tons, but the great majority of china bauxite is hard monohydrate diaspore type with low ratio of aluminium silicon, high impurity content and poor aluminum dissolution performance, that cause high energy consumption, long and complex process, high production costs and heavy environment load[6,7]. Before most used alumina production was sintering process rather than Bayer method in china, over the past decade Bayer method has been widely applied instead of sintering process or combination both forming joint process, premise is improving bauxite quality by mineral processing or adding imported rich bauxite mineral[6,8]. In general each ton production of alumina needs bauxite 1.6~2.20t, limestone 0.7~1.7t, soda 0.250kg, fresh water 12.30 cubic meters, in addition to consume large amounts of energy, and emission waste water over 8.0 cubic meters, dust 2.3~5.7 kg, red mud 0.8-1.5 tons. In china Red mud yield nearly 30.0 million tons every year, accumulated stock is approximately 0.2 billion tons, by 2015 accumulative total red mud is expected to reach 0.35 billion tons [9-13].We know aluminium industry and alumina production have produced large waste, make large energy consumption and its environmental impact could not be ignored. Expecting to optimize production processes and achieve resource recycling for this industrial process the proper environmental assessment is very necessary. Currently Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is generally recognized as the approved tool to achieve the purpose. The essence of LCA tool is to examine, identify and evaluate a kind of materials, product, process, or a system of environmental impact in their whole life cycle. The life cycle of materials or products includes whole process from raw materials obtained to the final disposal, or more ideal with original or other forms of the whole process of recycling [14-17]."

Exploration for gold .deposits on Hispaniola has taken place sporadically over the years but has expanded in the past decade. There are veintype, disseminated, alluvial and elluvial deposits. Investigations were previously undertaken in Haiti by combined Haitian, Bureau of Mines, and UN geological teams at Grand Bois Limbe(Milot) and Cap Coq areas. Later studies were conducted at the Miches and Moncion districts. Gold occurrences were reported in quartz, silicic-barite veins and gossans. An important deposit ?at Pueblo Viejo is? a disseminated type where extraction is taking place in the oxidized zone. Exploration by Japanese and West German firms with local geologists are described in this paper together with Pueblo Viejo, Miches, Restauracion, Milot, and Meme ?areas where occurrences are known. Copper deposits with associated gold va1ues are also described. These include vein deposits in Central Cordillera and disseminated deposits at Terrier Rouge and Blondin.

It is said that the 21 st century will be an era of the remedy of the global environment. In order to reserve natural resources for the future and to avoid the dispersion of heavy metals after usage and to avoid pollution problems, it is extremely important to recycle heavy metals as much as possible by reasonable recovery procedures. The nonferrous metal industry is expected to play a important role in the recycling of heavy metals that are originally their products. From the depressed metal price experienced in Japan in 1980th due to the sudden change in current exchange rate between US dollar and Japanese yen, one of major nonferrous metal company, Dowa Mining, has diversified its business area not only to the so-called down stream, but also to the environmental business including metal recycling, industrial waste treatment and soil remediation by utilizing technologies and facilities once used or still used for mining and smelting of copper, zinc, lead and precious metals. In this paper some of these applications will be presented.

"Recently, there is a growing trend in the aluminum foundry industry to develop· improved melting and casting processes to produce lightweight, high-strength, and thin-wall castings for the aerospace and transportation industry. One casting method that has demonstrated industrial potential for producing clean, thinwall castings is vacuum-assisted, counter gravity casting. This process has the benefit of expeditiously and quiescently filling the casting cavity with a dramatic reduction of furnace related and reoxidation inclusions. Additionally, lower casting temperatures can be utilized because the application of vacuum during filling overcomes the resistive internal cavity pressure resulting in a finer, as-cast microstructure. The paper explores and discusses the processing and design conditions in improving the mechanical properties of A206 casting alloy using the vacuum assisted, counter gravity casting process.IntroductionThe process of metal casting has been, over the centuries, the chief production technique for components used in everyday life. However, the casting process has certain inherent problems that can adversely effect the properties of a finished product. These problems are directly attributable to the gravity pouring technique used to transfer molten metal to the mold and to fill the mold cavity.A recent study for the American Metalcasting Consortium demonstrated reoxidation products created during the casting process are five times more likely to cause product rejects than entrapped molding aggregates, melt slag, or furnace lining materials1. Formation of nonmetallic and intennetallic compounds are more prevalent in aluminum and titanium alloys because of their reactiveness to furnace lining materials and their high affinity for oxygen. The incorporation of undesirable compounds can be attributed to four areas of the casting operation. The sources are charge materials, melting technique, pouring methodology, and casting cavity filling. Aluminum foundry men have addressed the first three areas by selecting high quality melt stock, non-stirring melting equipment, and the use of porous ceramic filters. Unfortunately, little consideration is given to the last, but yet tl.1e most important part of the casting operation, the actual fill mg of the casting cavity.The generation of inclusion defects during the casting process can be described by two methods. As the liquid metal flows in the gating network and casting cavity, abrupt changes in flow d1rect10n cause the metal to become agitated. This mechanism liquid metal splashing, is generated by instability of the advancing liquid metal interface from turbulence effects as schematically illustrated in figure 1a2 . The surface oxide film bursts under high velocity conditions, folds over, and becomes dispersed and incorporated in the bulk liquid. Additionally, fragmented liquid droplets ejected from the disturbed interface oxidize and become dispersed in the metal stream."

A basic methodology is presented (employing both standard and theoretical assessment, analysis. and data interpretation techniques) for classifying waste containing trace levels of radionuclldes. Despite increased regulatory requirements for handling. transporting. and disposing of such waste: (I) no formal characterization methodology has yet been Implemented. and (2) no limits have been set to define the point at which a waste material is considered to be low-level and below which it Is "below regulatory concern" (BRC) or can be considered to contain no more than a diminimus level of radioactivity (i.e . is nonradioactive). &apos;I1le concept of diminimus limits specific to waste streams and waste forms is introduced. and a mechanism fur evaluating waste In relation to BRC and diminimus limits is outlined. This methodology can be used to perform a complete and adequate characterization of waste for classification according to its level of radioactivity.

"Previous experimental study on raceway size hysteresis on two-dimensional cold model showed that the inter-particle and wall-particle friction had a very large effect on the raceway size. Existing literature correlations for raceway size ignore the frictional effects. It has also been shown in the present study that their applicability to the ironmaking blast furnace is questionable. To take into account the effect of friction on the raceway size a stress analysis has been done for the raceway region. Two-dimensional fluid flow equations under turbulent conditions have been developed and solved computationally in order to get the pressure forces. The frictional forces were obtained in terms of stresses. To predict the raceway size a force balance was done for the raceway zone considering the pressure force, the frictional force and the bed weight. The resulting equations from the force balance are able to describe the raceway hysteresis phenomena reasonably well along with the raceway size. A two dimensional experimental set up has been fabricated in order to validate the computer predictions. Predicted values agree well with the experimental values.IntroductionWhen a high velocity blast of air is introduced into a packed bed through a tuyere, a cavity is formed in front of the tuyere. This cavity, formed in the iron-making blast furnace, is called the raceway. Coke tumbles down and bums in this raceway, generating heat and reducing gases for the iron-making process. The raceway is responsible for producing most of the reducing gasses in the blast furnace. In addition, the size and shape of the raceway determines the movement of solids within the blast furnace, the distribution of gases and liquids (slag and metal), setting the location where the primary chemical reactions occur and the temperature profile in the lower part of the blast furnace.Due to the importance of the raceway, many investigators l - 6 have studied it and have predicted the raceway size using the empirical correlations based on experimental (hot & cold) and mathematical models. A number of correlations have been reported in the literature to predict the raceway size by various investigators3 - 6 which are different to each other. Each of the correlations shows a different dependence of raceway diameter (DR) on bed height, particle size, solid density, bed voidage and blast velocity. None of the correlations includes the effect of solid stresses on the raceway size and shape. The magnitude of these stresses will depend on the bulk solids properties (internal angle of friction, wall angle of friction) and the bed dimensions."

"Priming of filters with small pores is influenced by the surface tension of the liquid metal and may be complicated by freezing • Freezing followed by melting has been observed experimentally. This process has been modeled on the basis of one dimensional heat flow by radiation to the filter and by conduction in the metal. Also considered are super-heat of the metal and the initial filter temperature. The results of the model provide useful guidelines for the application of filters. IntroductionFiltration has been recognized as a valuable method of refining by removing suspended phases from liquid metals or alloys. Woven fiberglass type fabrics and wire screens were used initially in the aluminum industry. With the introduction of the ceramic filters that exhibit improved inertness and refractoryness, filtration has been introduced to higher melting alloys including cast irons, superalloys, stainless steels, as well as low and medium carbon low alloy steels. A considerable literature is delveloping rapidly on the progress in applications and the advances in understanding the mechanisms and effectiveness of filtration processes (1-8).With the use of filtration for different alloy systems for the production of cast to shape parts a bewildering variety of gating system modifications has been developed (Figure 1) to accommodate the installation of filters in the mold. The modifications have two principal purposes: 1) the runner expansion is intended to compensate for the resistance to flow due to the filter and that of the captured inclusions, and 2) the metal reservoir upstream of the filter, provides a temporary by-pass which permits metal to flow across the filter and heat it until priming can be accomplished. priming of.filters by low and medium carbon steel is readily accomplished but, compared to such alloys as cast iron or 19 Cr-9Ni stainless steel, requires greater precautions to avoid failure to prime by excessive freezing on or inside the filter pores. The behaviour of arsenic and antimony during copper electrorefining was studied in order to identify the conditions under which good quality copper cathodes could be produced from anodes with high levels of these impurities. Examination of the effect of current density over the range 21 to 37 mA/cm2 indicated that the relative amounts of As and Sb entering the electrolyte affected the onset of passivation. When the ratio of As/Sb entering the electrolyte was greater than 2, the anodes showed no sign of passivation even at the highest current density; when the ratio was less than 2, the anodes passivated at 37 mA/cm2. Cathode analyses showed that anodes with an As/Sb dissolution ratio less than 2.0 tend to produce cathodes of inferior quality even at normal current densities (25.7 mA/cm2). The criterion of a minimum As/Sb dissolution ratio of 2.0, and mathematical correlations for the distribution of As and Sb between the electrolyte and slime developed in a previous study, allow the calculation of the maximum allowable Sb level in en anode for a given As concentration. Analyses of plant data at the CCR Division of Noranda Inc. for the last four years of operation have demonstrated that the use of this as a quality control tool has allowed the quality of copper cathodes to be maintained despite a significant increase in the average Sb levels in anode receipts.

"A simplified finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm for modeling microwave propagation in magnetic dielectric materials was developed and employed to study the microwave dissipation in magnetite. Heat transfer during microwave heating of magnetite was subsequently investigated by solving heat transfer differential equation using explicit finite-difference (EFD) method. It is observed that temperature of magnetite surface increases rapidly in the first minute due to the rapid strength decays in both electric and magnetic fields within a short distance along the path of microwave dissipation. A temperature peak, initially formed at the surface of the sample slab, migrates inward as heating time extends and microwave power increases.IntroductionAs one of primary materials in iron and steel industry, magnetite exhibits excellent microwave absorption capability, which leads to great energy conservation in microwave assisted steelmaking [1,2]. The fast temperature increase in microwave heating of magnetite can be attributed to both dielectric and magnetic losses [2]. Although much experimental work has confirmed this observation, detailed computational studies for modeling of microwave field dissipation in magnetite at commonly used frequencies, such as 915 MHz, has not been well addressed [1,3].Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is widely used in computational electrodynamics modeling to simulate the dynamics of electromagnetic wave scattering from various media [4,5]. This approach requires modeling algorithm to be formulated with integration of specific characteristics of each medium. An extensive literature survey indicates that current formulations are only suitable for modeling electromagnetic waves propagating in normal dielectric lossy materials [5,6]. Since magnetite is a magnetic dielectric material in which both dielectric and magnetic properties contribute to the heating process under microwave irradiation, a specific algorithm should be developed for the simulation."

Fault diagnosis systems have attracted growing interest in a number of engineering fields. The number of applications has increased and successful results have been widely reported. The fault diagnosis system presented in this paper is integrated, and it monitors the states of the process and performs fault detection and diagnosis on the process equipment. The monitoring of process states is carried out by means of Kohonen Self-Organising Maps that is a powerful tool in visualisation and analysis of high dimensional data in engineering applications. This paper presents the results of SOM analysis carried out on the Outokumpu flash smelting process. The subsystems analyzed in more detail are the condition of the concentrate burner, the condition of the gas line on the basis of the pressure distribution in the process and the cooling water circulation of the waste heat boiler, and the condition of the furnace and furnace equipment on the basis of the temperature distribution in the furnace and gas line.
