"The NIOSH ground control safety research program at Spokane, Washington, is exploring applications of photogrammetry to rock mass and support monitoring. This paper describes two ways photogrammetric techniques are being used. First, photogrammetric data of laboratory testing is being used to correlate energy input and support deformation. This information can be used to infer remaining support toughness after ground deformation events. This technique is also demonstrated in a field application. Second, field photogrammetric data is compared to crackmeter data from a deep underground mine. Accuracies were found to average 8 mm, but have produced results within 0.2 mm of true displacement, as measured by crackmeters. Application of these techniques consists of monitoring overall fault activity by monitoring multiple points around the crackmeter. A case study is provided in which a crackmeter is clearly shown to have provided insufficient information regarding overall fault ground deformation. Photogrammetry is proving to be a useful ground monitoring tool due to its unobtrusiveness and ease of use.INTRODUCTIONNIOSH Mine Safety ResearchPhotogrammetry systems have been implemented by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as part of its ground control research to improve mine safety. Conventional monitoring of ground movement has typically focused on movement of a few discrete points that are marked or anchored to instruments. Loss of a designated point or anchor, or the ability to identify a stable point in an unstable area, have often frustrated monitoring efforts. NIOSH researchers are using photogrammetry to conduct full-field measurements of rock surfaces underground. Periodic measurements of the entire surface of a ramp allow patterns of displacement to be observed. Full-field measurements provide much more insight into ground behavior than point measurements.BackgroundPrevious work by Benton, et al. (2014) discussed laboratory calibration and verification testing of two photogrammetry systems being used by NIOSH researchers. Both systems utilize stereoscopic image pairing techniques for photogrammetric reconstruction. This paper discusses how a laboratory system was used to conduct volumetric analyses of testing of shotcrete panels with varying types of reinforcement. The laboratory system was found to be accurate to within 2 mm. Additionally, a field photogrammetry system was found to produce linear measurements within 1 mm of known lengths in laboratory conditions. This system is currently being used at a deep underground mine to observe ground support conditions and deformations that have occurred. This paper discusses comparison of preliminary volumetric measurements of rib deformation to laboratory tests, as well as comparison of the field system against a crackmeter installed across a fault surface where it intersects the ramp."

"Room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery has historically been associated with more than 25% of all ground-fall fatalities in the underground coal mines of the United States. The risk of ground falls during pillar recovery increases in multiple-seam mining conditions. The hazards associated with pillar recovery in multiple-seam mining include roof cutters, roof falls, rib rolls, coal outbursts, and floor heave. When pillar recovery is planned in multiple seams, it is critical to properly design the mining sequence and panel layout to minimize potential seam interaction. This paper addresses geotechnical considerations for concurrent pillar recovery in two coal seams with 70 ft of interburden under about 1,000 ft of depth of cover.The study finds that, for interburden thickness of 70 ft, the multiple seam mining influence zone in the lower seam is directly under the barrier pillar within about 100 ft from the gob edge of the upper seam. The peak stress in the interburden transfers down at an angle of approximately 20° away from the gob, and the entries and crosscuts in the influence zone are subjected to elevated stress during development and retreat. The study also suggests that, for full pillar recovery in close distance multiple seam scenarios, it is optimal to superimpose the gobs in both seams, but it is not necessary to superimpose the pillars. If the entries and / or crosscuts in the lower seam are developed outside the gob line of the upper seam, additional roof and rib support needs to be considered to account for the elevated stress in the multiple seam influence zone. INTRODUCTION Room-and-pillar mining accounted for about 40% of underground coal production in the United States in 2016. Pillar recovery, practiced in about one-third of the room-and-pillar mines, represents about 10% of the coal mined underground, yet it has historically been associated with more than 25% of all ground fall fatalities (Mark, Chase, and Pappas, 2003). In some U.S. coal fields, particularly central Appalachia, many coal mines are operating under geological conditions with multiple coal seams. The risk of ground falls during pillar recovery increases under multiple-seam mining conditions. The hazards of pillar recovery associated with multiple-seam mining include roof cutters, roof falls, rib rolls, coal outbursts, and floor heave (Mark and Tuchman, 2007; NIOSH, 2010b). Pillar retreating creates abutment pressure, not only in the currently mined seam, but also in the overlying or underlying seams. Multiple-seam interactions become more pronounced as overburden depth increases and interburden thickness decreases. To safely recover the pillars in multiple seams, it is critical to properly plan the mining sequence and panel layout to minimize potential multiple-seam interaction."

"Longwall mining is by far the most common method of underground coal extraction in Australia. The industry trends and expectations are placing increasing emphasis on the reliability and productivity of these operations. The longwalls are becoming wider and longer while retreat rates are continuously increasing due to significant improvements achieved in longwall equipment reliability and automation. This increased longwall productivity is placing significant emphasis on the reliability of longwall panel development.Although there have been significant improvements in the reliability of continuous miners and hydraulic drill rigs, the traditional resin encapsulated bolt installation is still the principal method used in all major coal-producing countries around the world. Anglo American realised an opportunity existed to introduce an alternative roof bolt installation technique called “spin to stall” in Australia. Spin to stall was first introduced in Anglo American Coal in South Africa where it has been successfully used for over a decade, though implementation of South African spin to stall resin in Australia has proven to be near impossible due to a significant difference in geotechnical conditions, mining method, and, subsequently, roof bolting equipment. Therefore, a new spin to stall development project was initiated between Anglo American Coal and Jennmar Australia (SPIN2STALL®). This paper summarises the journey of this project, the results, and the successful implementation of spin to stall achieved at Grasstree Mine.INTRODUCTIONThe Anglo American Coal business unit operates Grasstree and Moranbah North underground longwall mines in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland, with a third longwall mine, Grosvenor, currently being developed, and two more (Aquila and Moranbah South) in the project pipeline. The vision for Anglo American is to achieve “Zero Harm” through the effective management of safety at all operations, while for the coal business unit, at the same time to achieve industry-leading operational performance. Currently, both Grasstree and Moranbah North longwalls are operating at industry best practice rates. This is placing increased pressure on the development process to allow such high productivity levels to be sustainable."

"Fiber-reinforced spayed concrete has been used for several years in civil and tunneling operations. Research conducted to reduce cure times and increase compressive and flexural strengths resulted in the development of Tekcrete Fast®, a cementitious product capable of obtaining 41 MPa (6,000 psi) compressive strength and 8 MPa (1,200 psi) flexural strength in only 3 hours and reaching 7 day strengths of 62 MPa and 11.7 MPa (9,000 and 1,700 psi), respectively. A single bag product that uses conventional shotcrete and gunite application systems make it a natural crossover product for mining applications. The discovery of incredible adhesion properties and high resistance to chloride permeability helps ensure long-term stability and increases the ease of application. Project results from Disaster City® in Texas and the application for rehabilitating a coal mine belt entry are presented. The case study illustrates the effectiveness of the product in stabilizing a coal mine beltway and adjacent cross-cuts that were subjected to progressive sloughage due to humidity and cyclical loading. INTRODUCTION Original research produced a shotcrete formulation that extends beyond stabilization and can be used to restore the structural integrity of damaged infrastructure. The primary challenge was to develop a shotcrete or gunite that had structural strength within a few minutes to prevent parasitic loading, allowing ingress into damaged structures minutes after applying the mix formulation. This also applies to mining conditions where rapid support of progressive failures can minimize failure. An additional benefit was discovering that the product had extremely high adhesion properties in addition to high flexural strengths. The approach to product design was the development of “single bag” dry mixes that are entirely self-contained, can be rapidly transported anywhere in the field or underground, and can be deployed using simple equipment. Dry mix eliminates issues relevant to high shear water mixing because water is added in the form of a mist at the point of delivery; thus a low water-to-cement ratio can be achieved. However, since there is no onsite powder mixing, the product must have a high degree of inherent homogeneity. Minova offers a commercial version of this material, Tekcrete Fast®, a product that has been successfully deployed in the mining industry and is currently being used in civil, construction, and tunneling operations. The material can rapidly stabilize lose ground in metal, nonmetal, and coal mines. This paper described the technology development, product testing results, and applications and describes a case study to stabilize a coal mine beltway."

"It has been proven that longwall faces can be moved safely and efficiently. However, abutment pressures and poor ground control conditions can halt operations and be hazardous to coal miners. Recently at a mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania, roof material collapsed above shields that created two large voids and caused major challenges for shield recovery. A unique, engineering solution was developed that utilized a modified concrete material to fill the voids, creating stability in the affected area. The many phases of this project included the construction phase, void pumping, cutting out, and bolting of the concrete material. This project eliminated the hazards associated with bolting the recovery face and removing shields in adverse conditions, making it possible for the mine operator to safely complete the longwall move.INTRODUCTIONFrequently in the mining process, especially during the recovery phase, voids above the longwall supports have occurred. These voids are simply roof cavities caused by falling rock strata above the longwall face. Most often, this condition slows down or halts mining operations and creates hazardous work conditions for coal miners. Numerous methods of supporting void areas on longwall faces have been attempted and utilized throughout the mining industry since the advent of the longwall mining system. These methods have utilized many different materials and processes and have included the installation of steel or wooden beams, crib blocks, and various types of roof bolts. However, these methods can be dangerous due to exposure of personnel to the mine voids, falling roof material, and the necessity to handle large amounts of heavy support materials.This paper describes a unique case study in Southwestern Pennsylvania where longwall recovery methods, through two void fills, were successfully completed, eliminating exposure of coal miners to the rock voids above. At the start of this endeavor, normal recovery operations were halted, and hazardous conditions became a concern when the voids were encountered. However, in the interest of safety, the decision was made to try a unique method to completely fill the void from the bottom of the coal seam to the top of the void with a cementitious material and then mine through it. This is in contrast to traditional methods where beams and support materials are used to stabilize the area above and in front of the mine shields, which can expose miners to the void above."

"Highwall mining of thick (up to 100 ft) steeply dipping (20° or more) coal seams provides many challenges, both geotechnically and operationally because seam dips near or in excess of highwall mining machine capabilities are encountered. Maximizing coal recovery while maintaining highwall stability requires innovative techniques with regard to web and barrier pillar layout, depth of penetration, and choice of mining horizon within the seam. Stability of highwall mining slopes, openings, and pillars are typically analyzed using the ARMPS-HWM program, as well as LAMODEL, UDEC, and Slope-W modeling. Highwall stability can be maintained and highwall mining production optimized by applying design criteria in creative ways, including alternating miner penetration depths and initiating mining of thick seams toward the bottom of the seam. Highwall mining of thick, steeply dipping coal requires careful planning and execution, including close cooperation between geotechnical design engineers, the mining company, and the highwall mining contractor. This paper describes the application of creative design techniques to a specific pit arrangement at the Westmoreland Kemmerer Mine, Kemmerer, Wyoming. Highwall mining was accomplished by UGM ADDCAR Systems, LLC, on a contract basis. INTRODUCTION Highwall mining is a technique for attaining additional coal recovery after the economic strip limit is reached in surface mining. It involves remote deployment of a continuous miner in openings beneath the final highwall, with no personnel entry. Many candidate areas for highwall mining have thick and steeply dipping seams. Mining downdip presents challenges related to the maximum pulling capacity of the machine, traction of the cutting head, and material conveying, all of which limit penetration depth. Maximum penetration is greater for flatter slopes and decreases for slopes nearing the threshold of the maximum machine operating angle. Most highwall mining operations are relatively flat with slight undulations within the seam; therefore, the highwall mining pillar design criteria applies fairly equally to the entire mining area. However, in steeply dipping deposits, design criteria based on higher overburden loads at the far end of the penetration are excessively conservative for the shallower portions of the openings near the highwall."

"In 2016, room-and-pillar mining provided nearly 40% of underground coal production in the United States. Over the past decade, rib falls have resulted in 12 fatalities, representing 28% of the ground-fall fatalities in U.S. underground coal mines. Nine of these 12 fatalities (75%) have occurred in room-and-pillar mines. The objective of this research is to study the geomechanics of bench room-and-pillar mining and the associated response of high pillar ribs at overburden depths greater than 1,000 ft. This paper provides a definition of the bench technique, the pillar response due to loading, observational data for a case history, a calibrated numerical model of the observed rib response, and application of this calibrated model to a second site. INTRODUCTION Bench mining is a an underground mining technique typically applied to room-and-pillar mines where full seam extraction on development presents an unacceptably high risk of injury from high pillar ribs or where the mining equipment is not designed to extract the full seam thickness. To mitigate the increased risk associated with high ribs and slender pillars, a more modest thickness is extracted from the top of the seam on development. This is followed by grading the floor and recovering the bottom of the seam with or without extraction of the pillars during retreat mining. A mine located in Eastern Kentucky extracts two seams at depths ranging from outcrop to 2,000 ft. In some areas of the mine, Seam A and Seam B are close enough together to be mined simultaneously. Seam A (top) is mined on development 7 to 9 ft. high for the entire length of the panel. On retreat, as each pillar is extracted, the continuous miner is ramped down into the floor (Seam B), two pairs of Mobile Roof Support (MRS) units are set, and the pillars are extracted at the full mining height of 14+ ft. During the pillar recovery process, the floor is extracted in each entry, from a ramp initiated outby the retreat line, sequentially just prior to extracting the lifts from the pillars (see Figure 1)."

The Cayuga Mine, a deep rock salt mining, operation, changed from a standard room and pillar mine design to a yielding pillar/pressure arch design five years ago. In general the roof conditions improved. However, entries adjacent to the abutment pillars continued to fail. It was noticed that where abutment pillars were accidentally "notched" (by driving cross- cuts one cut into the pillars), the abutment entries had better roof conditions than where there were no "notches". Experiments with intentionally notched abutment pillars showed that notching did improve abutment entry conditions. During the past four years notch configuration has been varied to suit local ground conditions. Recently, "pre-cutting" of notches has proven itself as a means of protecting abutment entries under severe ground conditions. As an added bonus, the notches improve productivity by providing more places to work and reduce costs because it is not necessary to bolt the notches.

The use of Mobile Roof Supports (MRS) in pillar retreat mining has been a fairly recent occurrence in coal mining operations in the United States (1988). Determining the pillar block configuration, the crosscut and entry centers, the number of entries developed, the method of ventilation, and the type and mixture of equipment used arc all factors in establishing a successful pillar retreat operation. This paper will evaluate and report on the history of one coal company's relationship with MRS usage for pillar retreat mining and focus on the company's use of horizontal pillars (inverted-blocks) for the panel configuration.

Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR), a satellite-based remote sensing technique, has been demonstrated as a potentially practical method for measuring mining induced surface subsidence. Unlike traditional methods of subsidence monitoring, DInSAR has the capacity to generate subsidence data on a regional mining scale with a relatively high data density. Using DInSAR to evaluate subsidence over large regions with relatively long time scales has the potential to help quantify the impact of subsidence in the mining region, and provide a means for validating whole-mine geotechnical models. In this study, nine pairs of interferometric data from the Japanese Advance Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) were processed using DInSAR to generate displacement maps for a group of trona mines in southwest Wyoming. The data cover a time span from December 2007 to March 2011. The maximum subsidence for one of the mines totaled 1.3 meters for this period. Cumulative DInSAR displacement maps show the development of subsidence over time. In this mining region, surface subsidence is generated primarily by extraction of trona using retreating longwalls. Additionally, trona is extracted by solution mining, which also generates measurable surface subsidence.

This paper presents an analysis of measurements of inter-burden de- formations above six longwall faces. An attempt is made to demonstrate some correlation between the movements at the various sites, and to examine their importance with respect to predicting caving height, disruption of overlying seams, and disruption of aquifers. This analysis demonstrates some significant differences between predicted surface subsidence, and inter-burden deformation. In addition it is shown that the caving height above a longwall face is equal to 8 to 12 times the extraction height, with a zone of fractured rock ex- tending to approximately 50 times the extraction height above the seam.

Gob pressure measurements were made in a Western U. S. coal mine as part of a long-term program to evaluate cave progress and to determine the influence of geological discontinuities on caving conditions, load transfer, and resulting instabilities. Gloetzl cells were selected for the measurements due to their simple, robust construction and a history of being able to monitor pressures in a broken medium. A methodology was developed for the successful installation and protection of the cells and hydraulic lines in the gob as the face retreated. The measurement indicated a cave progress controlled by the frequency of, major faults. The pressure-mining progress profile was compared to those observed in other parts of the world. It was concluded that the significant differences in profiles was caused by the thick-bedded strata, the existence of high lateral stresses and the spacing between faults. Recommendations are given for future applications of Gloetzl cells for gob pressure measurements.

The bulk of primary mining at the Anglo Coal's Bank Colliery was carried out by drill and blast method, in a bord and pillar layout exploiting the No. 2 Seam. Secondary extraction, top/bottom coaling, also took place using both the drill and blast (D&B) method and continuous miners (CM). Extensive mining in this seam resulted in the risk of sterilising the No. 4 Seam reserves. Therefore, multiseam design guidelines established by Salamon and Oravecz (8) were re-evaluated in light of the low safety factors and the low pillar width to mining height ratios of pillars in the No. 2 Seam. Two and three dimensional (2D & 3D) numerical modelling was carried out to quantify and verify the parameters that influence the multiseam mining. The modelling was conducted primarily in two dimensions (plane strain), with 3D models to confirm the validity of the 2D results. A panel risk assessment flow chart was developed to assess the panels with respect to pillar failure and multiseam mining. This flow chart was extended into the evaluation of risk of surface subsidence using the current rock engineering knowledge. The aim of this risk assessment tool is to assess all underground workings at Anglo Coal collieries simply and rapidly. The identification of high-risk areas would warrant further investigation and possible backfilling to reduce the risk of pillar failures ensuring that reserves in the No. 4 and 5 Seams above are intact.

During the last decade mechanical rock excavation has become increasingly widespread in the mining industry and, more in general, in excavation engineering. This technology, especially the tools and their operating mode, has developed according to empirical procedures and for this reason their validity should be ascertained by systematically re-examining the rock breakage processes. This topic has been approached in the framework of a joint research project involving the Universities of Cagliari (Italy) and Wollongong (Australia). The investigation has been carried out experimentally as well as with the methods of numerical modelling which is based on fracture mechanics principles. The first results of this integrated research led to the proposal of an interpretation of rock breakage by means of drag tools and to the identification of a basic correlation between the rake angle of the tool and the grain size of the rock fragments produced and, therefore, the energy efficiency of the operation.

Highwall scaling, bolting and technical blasting are important aspects in the remediation of existing highwall exposures. Proper planning, design and research are important first steps in the development of long term stability. Research into old workings and their influence on highwall stability control the planning and design. These steps are followed by improvements in blasting techniques, highwall monitoring programs and constant evaluation of the results. Recently, due to a number of factors, the highwalls of the Open Cut Mine have started to deteriorate, creating both operational and potential safety problems. Geologic setting, highwall design, mining operations, old workings and weather have combined to create adverse conditions that have allowed sections of the highwalls to become unstable. Homestake Mining Company has developed a program to alleviate the existing ground control problems and to decrease the effect operations has on future highwall stability.

"Underground mines have always been an integral part of the limestone industry. However, beginning in the 1990s, the number of underground limestone mines has increased for many reasons including• Stripping ratios at surface quarries have become uneconomic.• Existing surface quarries have reached the mineral boundaries, and the remaining stone reserves are underground.• Surface access to the entirety of the limestone reserve is limited by development or infrastructure.• The once-rural setting of the surface quarry is now surrounded by subdivisions and development. An underground mine is less intrusive and takes the mining operation out of the public eye.• For larger markets, an underground mine enables year-round production without the sequence of overburden stripping in the winter to expose mineable stone for summer production. This is common at many surface quarries.Multiple-level operations are a natural extension of the decision to mine underground. Most limestone reserves, for example, the Tyrone-Oregon-Camp Nelson, Hermitage-CartersLebanon- Ridley, and Salem Limestones, are sufficiently thick to accommodate multiple levels. Multiple-level mines should be planned by considering each level separately and then integrating the individual levels into a larger mine plan. Failure to plan all the levels of a multiple-level mine in concert can result in ground control (back, pillar, floor, and inter-level sill pillar) problems attributable to stress transfer and interaction between the levels or the necessity to leave a thicker sill pillar between adjacent levels.Multiple-level mine planning begins with geology. Once the upper level back horizon is identified, the geology, rock strength, and physical properties in each level are used to• identify the optimal back horizon• quantify whether back support is required and, if so, the type, spacing, and length of the back support• determine the pillar centers• determine the total mining height, including floor shots"

"Surface subsidence processes, especially those associated with a longwall mining operations, could cause operational and/or safety problems to railroads. For railroads with normal amounts of traffic, both the limited time window between traffic and the limited space available make the efforts to return the railroad back to its original state nearly impossible. In order to ensure the safe operation of a subsiding railway, the partial lifting method has been developed and applied. This paper describes the principle and application of the method. A case of applying this method to mitigate subsidence effects on a long section of railway has been demonstrated.INTRODUCTIONMaintaining an operational railway as it is experiencing a longwall subsidence process is not an easy task. The subsidence process may induce sufficient strain and curvature to cause problems to the railroad structures. Localized subsidence-induced slope often is significantly larger than the permissible ruling gradient of 0.7% for a locomotive to haul a loaded train reliably. In order to ensure safe operation, it would be ideal to instantly lift the railroad track back to its original level as it is subsiding. However, it is often impractical to do so due to the limited time windows available between railway traffic and the available space on the railroad base.A partial lifting method has been developed to keep the railroad operational under such limitations. The subsiding railroad track is raised by only a determined, partial amount of the occurred subsidence at a given time. By making such a determined adjustment, the railroad track can be maintained on a smooth and operational profile, and the high strain and curvature on the railroad structures can be reduced as well. To define a smooth railroad track profile in a subsided section the following two conditions should be met: (1) the maximum railroad gradient should be less than the permissible ruling gradient, and (2) the recommended amount of adjustment should be able to be made by the repair crew within the available time windows between scheduled railway traffic.The subsidence effects on a long section of railroad over two longwall panels have been successfully mitigated using the partial lifting method. The railroad experienced a maximum subsidence 89 of about 5 .0 ft (1.5 m) with the average subsidence along the entire length being about 3.45 ft (1.05 m). However, the average adjustment due to lifting that was made along the entire length of the subsidence-influenced railway was only 0.5 ft (152 mm)."

Similar massive pillar failures were observed in two underground coal mines with different configurations of mine workings and overburden depths. Finite element models were used to analyze the causes and mechanisms of the pillar failure. The results of the analyses confirms the underground observation. For Case No. 1 the failure of coal pillar is mainly caused by a combined effect of smaller coal pillars under a large overburden and the interaction of multiple seam mining. For Case No. 2, the pillar failure was initiated by the weak roof rock but the ultimate pillar failure was caused by the splitting of pillars into very small size.

"Underground mine rib stability is an ongoing safety issue in all mining applications. Rib-related accidents present at least as many problems as roof-related ground control. Underground coal mine rib safety is continually emphasized as a primary safety concern at every mining operation. The application of rib support materials is increasing as more difficult mining conditions are experienced due to deeper cover, more variable depositional environments, thicker seam heights, and multi-seam mining effects. As the coal seams become thicker, the need for rib control increases. A variety of rib control methodologies has been documented and research continues on mine design methods and support techniques to reduce or eliminate rib-related accidents.This paper presents an alternative rib bolting technology using proven conventional rib support systems that allows mine personnel to more efficiently install rib support during development operations. This alternative rib bolting method allows for additional rib support with a single support installation.INTRODUCTIONRib control continues to garner the watchful eye of both concerned operators and government officials due to many factors: inherent safety within entries and crosscuts, actual rib stability history, safety improvement, cost control, improved mining methods, and maintaining production goals. As demonstrated through many years of actual practice, desired outcomes can be achieved by scrutiny, innovation, and combining improved practice methodologies.Rib surface control continues to be a necessary part of the production process. However, production and safety issues persist at the point of installation using current control apparatuses and methods to install rib controls. Among others, current issues of rib control are quantity of bolts required, overall time required for installation, ease of apparatus installation, flexibility of the system for appendage installation and operator exposure. A need exists to decrease the time miners spend installing rib control apparatuses, while increasing the safety of such installation processes. At present, installing rib control devices (primary rib bolts, plates, mesh, and, in most cases, secondary rib bolts and plates) is performed in a very congested area and is time-consuming process at the primary coal-winning area: the face. One of the critical variables affecting resin bolt performance is the size of the resin annulus, defined as the difference between the hole and bolt radius. The vast majority of the millions of resin roof bolts installed each year in the United States employ an annulus between 0.125 and 0.188 inch. As the annulus size decreases the resin flow around the bolt becomes more difficult, increasing the resin pressure induced by bolt insertion. As the resin pressure increases the loss of resin into bedding planes and vertical fractures in the rock increases. As the annulus size increases the mixing of the resin paste and mastic becomes less efficient. Thus, the lower and upper limits of the optimum annulus size is determined by insertion pressure and mixing considerations, respectively. Previous U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers have concluded that a 0 125 inch annulus is optimal. However, others have recently reported that a 0.095 inch annulus with special rolled deformation (SRO) bolts provide superior anchorage to standard rebar with a very large 0.250 inch annulus, attributing SRD resin loss in weak ground to oversized holes. The effect of annulus size on unit length pull strength and resin loss to fractured rock was investigated. Short encapsulation pull tests with resin annuluses of 0.125 and 0.095 inch resisted an average of 2.25 tons per grouted inch, with no significant variation. However, annulus size has shown a dramatic effect on the magnitude of resin lost to simulated rock fractures. No. 5 standard . No. 6 standard, and No 7 J-Bar rebar were inserted into two different viscosity resin cartridges designed for 4 foot boll encapsulation into a one inch inside diameter metal tube, To simulate a rock fracture, a 0.250 inch diameter orifice was located near the capped end of the tube Resin loses increased as annulus size decreased, with a minimum loss of 35% and a maximum loss of 60% associated with 0.125 and 0.095 inch annuluses, respectively.
