Because shape is an assessment of the three-dimensional form of a particle, it may be described in terms of sphericity (?), which is a measure of how closely a particle approaches a spherical configuration. In this study, Darcy?s law and the Kozeny-Carman model for fluid flow through porous media were applied to packed beds to determine the sphericity (?) of apatite particles. The beds were composed of glass spheres or particles of apatite (igneous from Brazil and sedimentary from the United States) of three classes of size (Class 1: -297 +210 µm; Class 2: -210 +149 µm; Class 3: -149 +105 µm). Glass spheres were used to validate the model because of its known sphericity (? = 1.00). Apatite particles, either igneous or sedimentary, showed very close values for particle sphericity (? ? 0.6). Observations on particle images conducted by scanning electron microscopy illustrated that igneous (? = 0.623) and sedimentary (? = 0.644) particles of apatite of Class 2 predominantly exhibit elongated shape. The close value of particle sphericity (? ? 0.6) showed by either igneous or sedimentary apatite may be justified by the similarity in particle shape.

The Russia Wharf segment of the Silver Line Phase II Project for the MBTA incorporated ground freezing and underpinning during New Austrian Tunneling Method(NATM) tunneling through timber pile foundations, urban fill, and abandoned wharf structures beneath two historic 7-story buildings with steel frames and masonry facades. During construction, the project team implemented an extensive program to monitor, evaluate, and mitigate the ground and building movements caused by the various construction activities. Mitigation included freeze cycling and building raising/lowering to compensate for ground movements and safely maintain the serviceability and occupancy of the buildings. In this paper, we present the history of the freeze, tunnel construction, and thaw-related movements that occurred and the building response that we observed.

Fans used to ventilate subway, passenger rail and vehicular tunnels are similar to the fans used to ventilate underground mines. However, tunnel ventilation fan systems are typically designed to meet NFPA 130 or 502 standards, while mine ventilation fan systems must comply with the appropriate federal mine safety regulations. As a result, fan operation requirements and performance criteria, as well as typical fan and duct configurations differ significantly for tunnel and mine ventilation applications. Variations in environmental conditions in tunnels as compared to mines also result in differences in fan performance and material specifications. The need to enclose tunnel fans within building structures creates space restrictions impacting fan size selection that are not commonly encountered in mine fan installations, resulting in different approaches to selecting fans for the two types of tunnels. This paper discusses the various similarities and differences in design considerations for tunnel and mine ventilation fans.

The dramatic increase in molybdenum prices from the low of less than $2.50/lb in 1999 to more than $40/lb in 2005 has caught the attention of molybdenum mine owners and exploration project developers. Between 2005 and early 2007, prices pulled back and stabilized within a trading range of $25/lb to $30/lb. This 1,000 percent price increase has motivated most existing producers to expand production and is motivating those with molybdenum prospects to accelerate the development process for earliest possible production. It is still unknown how much new production will come from existing mines, how much production will be needed from new mines if demand continues to grow and how many potential new mines might be available to meet future demand. And of course, the billion dollar question is whether molybdenum prices will remain high, or will they fall back to the low levels seen during the 1980s and 1990s? This article attempts to answer these questions in a way that will help molybdenum project developers and financiers plan for the future.

Demand for nonfuel minerals depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1984. New housing starts rose to 1.8 million units. Automakers turned out about 15% more cars (7.8 million) and 30% more trucks (3.1 million) than in 1983. Nevertheless, many domestic mineral operations experienced difficulties in 1984. This resulted from import competition greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing and downsizing of motor vehicles. About 15% of our energy was imported. This in cluded $36 billion worth of crude oil and $22 billion in refined products This added significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $12; billion. On the bright side for mining, coal production rose 14% to 810 Mt (890 mil lion st). Three-fourths o: the coal was burned to generate electricity and more than half of our electricity was derived from coal-burning plants. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw minerals, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult. Consequently, our nonfuel minerals trade deficit rose 60% to $19 billion, reflecting imports of $39 billion and exports of $20 billion. There were increased pressures from some major segments of the minerals industry for some form of import protection. But President Reagan said, "Our goal is a system of free and fair trade in goods, services, and capital. We will work toward this goal through both bilateral and multilateral trading agreements." The US minerals industry consists of domestic mines, concentrators, smelters, refineries, mineral manufacturing plants, and recyclers. It also includes many wholly- or partially-owned operations in many parts of the world, providing employment and income for US citizens and others as well. Compared with 1983, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8%, to $23 billion. The $253 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output was a 14% increase. Major Metals Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production-rose 10%, to 84 Mt (93 million st). This stimulated a 36% rise in domestic iron ore production, to 52 Mt (57 million st), about 98% pelletized. Iron ore imports rose 44%, to 14 Mt (15 million st). Despite the increase of steel production, output remained well below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1984 production was still 23% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity remained steady at 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports as a major reason for low domestic capacity. In December, pacts with seven leading steel exporting nations were announced. This is an effort to reduce import penetration to about 18.5% of the domestic market. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about 50% capacity. The US mined no manganese or chromium. Only a small quantity of ferronickel was produced from domestic laterite mining in Oregon. Molybdenum production, at 45 kt (49,500 st), rose threefold. The pyrometallurgical industry plays a vital role in producing metals for our modern life. With growing demand of metals and declining grade of mineable ore, innovations become critical for many mining companies. It is necessary to conduct a review of recent improvements to the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, process and equipment improvements, and computer-based modeling/simulations. Many of those innovations tend to be applied to wider metals, and not be restricted by a specific metal. Therefore, we tried to cover the wide applications of many improvements to wider range of metals to reflect this trend. The challenge of a lack of robust measurement techniques under high-temperature conditions within a furnace hinders optimization of a pyrometallurgical process. Some future opportunities in the pyrometallurgical industry on analytical measurement techniques, computer modeling, and processes and equipment have also been outlined and discussed.

Drilling into coal mine roof strata to install roof bolts has the potential to release substantial quantities of respirable dust. Due to the proximity of drill holes to the breathing zone of roof bolting personnel, dusts escaping the holes and avoiding capture by the dust collection system pose a potential respiratory health risk. Controls are available to complement the typical dry vacuum collection system and minimize harmful exposures during the initial phase of drilling. This paper examines the use of a bit sleeve in combination with a dust hog-type bit to improve dust extraction during the critical initial phase of drilling. A twisted-body drill bit is also evaluated to determine the quantity of dust liberated by comparison to the dust hog-type bit. Based on these laboratory tests, the bit sleeve may reduce dust emissions by one-half during the initial phase of drilling before the drill bit is fully enclosed by the drill hole. Because collaring is responsible for the largest dust liberations, overall dust emissions can also be substantially reduced. The use of a twisted-body bit has minimal improvement on dust capture compared to the commonly used dust hog-type bit.

Small-mine and contractor Fatal Incidence Rates have been a problem for over 20 years in the coal industry, and the rates persist as unacceptably high. This paper briefly retraces historical information and data on the continuing problem and recounts the many unsuccessful efforts and initiatives to address the problems effectively. Next the results of a review of international literature on addressing the problems are presented. After focusing on a method to pinpoint the trouble spots more specifically through a nested data analysis, suggestions are provided on how the problem may potentially be addressed more systematically and effectively in the U.S.

The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency(MIGA) is part of the World Bank Group, and has as its mission the facilitation of foreign direct investment by providing political risk insurance (guarantees) to foreign investors and lenders. As a development institution, MIGA is required to ensure that the projects that it insures will bring development benefits to the host country. Demonstration of this includes review and analysis of the environmental and social soundness of a prospective investment. Environmental guidelines and policies developed by the World Bank Group are important components both in analyzing the environmental and social soundness of a prospective investment and in risk management. MIGA has recently formalized and adopted environmental assessment and disclosure policies. The approach taken by MIGA to environmental review of investments and implementation of these policies is described in this paper.

The government of India convened a precedent-setting meeting in New Delhi on Nov. 12, 2001.The meeting brought together regulators and the mining industry in an attempt to fix the industry’s mine development problems in that country. More than 150people attended the all-day session. Ram Vilas Paswan, Minister of Coal and Mines, chaired the meeting. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Minister of State for Coal and Mines, was also present. The secretary of the Department of Mines and the Joint Secretaries and Additional Secretary also participated. The Department of Mines’ mandate is for economic growth: to get new mine development going and to make investment in mining attractive for both domestic and foreign-owned companies.

Waste areas of a mine should be sealed especially if there is a risk of spontaneous combustion. Leakage through and around such seals can be problematic. Pressure balancing has been one of the favored options to prevent the ingress of air into these waste areas. Balance chambers require maintenance and monitoring to ensure that they are effective. This paper explores the use of inert gas as a means of controlling ingress of air and egress of waste gases as a means of reducing leakage around seals.

Precipitated calcium carbonate is used as a filler and coating material in the manufacturing of paper because of its high brightness and light scattering characteristics. However, beneficiated calcite has similar potential, given the fact that the industrial specifications are already achieved. For paper industries, the requirement is that the desired product should be pure and have a brightness of 93 to 95 percent. A very-high-grade calcite deposit of around 92 percent is located in the north of Norway, which is used as the raw material for ground calcium carbonate (GCC) feed for the paper industries. There is a substantial amount of calcite resource, which has pyrite and pyrrhotite as major impurities. These sulfides, even when present in minor concentrations, impart color to the end product (paper). Removing these minerals is estimated to increase utilization of the deposit by 10  percent, which represents several million tonnes of calcite marble. Due to the requirement for environmentally friendly reagents and chemicals by the mineral industry, fatty di-amines are being tested for pyrite and pyrrhotite flotation. The interaction mechanism of diamine with the main components of the ore were studied and optimum conditions for removal of sulfide impurities are outlined.

For the first half of the 21st century, the United States will rely on the same mix of fuels it has for the past 50 years. Petroleum for the United States will cost more and availability will decline as developing nations modernize. Increased use of natural gas for electric power generation will result in stress on the gas supply. Coal will be the fuel of last resort. More than half the petroleum used is imported, about the same amount as used for transportation. Only coal can provide relief by fueling railroads through electrification while encouraging “piggy-back” trailer haulage, co-generation for manufacturing and expanded passenger service.

INTRODUCTION Before a mine is planned in detail, a preliminary analysis is often conducted. This preplanning permits the mining engineer to make a rapid assessment as to whether or not a particular mining property warrants further consideration. In fact, a properly conducted preplanning phase can come within 10% to 20% of the actual results, thereby saving the mining engineer valuable time before committing himself to a fine-tuned analysis. The questions to be answered by mine preplanning are (1) What will be the operating conditions for the mine? and (2) How long will it take to complete the project? To answer these questions, calculations dealing with reserve estimation, production planning, man- power planning, and project scheduling are conducted. The following sections discuss these various phases of mine preplanning in greater detail. RESERVE ESTIMATION The estimation of the various characteristics of a reserve, such as quantity, grade, and thickness, is an ongoing process throughout the life of a mining venture. However, the reserve-estimation phase of mine planning is more closely associated with the preplanning phase. There are many different techniques employed in reserve estimation of solid mineral deposits; variations among them are introduced because of such considerations as ease of application or level of accuracy. In any event, each technique is developed in the following manner: (1) the mineral body is represented pictorially and then subdivided into blocks related to one or more samples of exploration data, (2) the area and volume of each block is determined, (3) the volumes are converted to representative tonnages (or, for example, grades), and (4) the results are tabulated. To illustrate this procedure, the polygonal (area-of- influence) technique will be presented due to its ease of application, flexibility in dealing with different deposits, and general acceptance. The polygonal method assumes that all characteristics of a mineral body extend halfway between a point of observation and any other point of observation. The explored portion of the mineral body is represented by polygonal prisms whose depths relate to the characteristic in question (grade, thickness, etc.) and whose plane bases relate to the area of influence of each point of observation (drill hole, etc.) as shown in Fig. 1. The polygons must be constructed in a definite order, usually clockwise and from the periphery to the center of the deposit. Table 1 can then be used to calculate the characteristics in question. Since, by definition, the polygonal method assumes that the characteristics of a mineral body extend half- way between points of observation, it becomes readily apparent that the evaluation of a vertical-drill hole exploration program requires that the sides of the polygons be formed by the intersection of perpendicular bisectors (Fig. 2). Figs. 3 and 4 show correct and incorrect construction of the polygons. The criterion for correct construction of the polygons is that all points within a particular polygon must be closer to its rallying point than those located in any other polygon. This is clearly not the case for certain points that are located in the polygon containing rallying point B in Fig. 4. Although this method can be used where the drill holes are irregularly spaced, calculations become less tedious when a square net (Fig. 5) or a chessboard (Fig. 6) grid is adopted. The numbers shown in Figs. 5 and 6 represent the relative weight for each of the shaded areas. In general, the greater the number of polygons, the more continuous the mineral body, and the more regular the grid, then the more accurate the computations will be. PRODUCTION PLANNING Before an acceptable evaluation of the production potential of a mine can be determined, a thorough exploration program should be conducted. It seems obvious that the nature and properties of the deposit and adjacent strata, the presence of impurities, and other mining conditions should be adequately determined prior to production planning and equipment selection. The lack of sufficiently detailed knowledge of the many mining parameters has led to the failure of numerous operations. For example, targeted production tonnages and equipment sizes for a coal mine are intimately related to the seam thickness. Needless to say the quality of information that is gathered from an exploration program can have a tremendous impact on the production plan. This paper discusses about sustainability factors in this area including: Social and environmental effects of mining, dislocation and substitution of communities, created and lost jobs, financial and economic factors, quality of life index, infrastructures and post-mining land use. Studies have been performed by coupling Geographical Information System (GIS) with decision support tools such as Multi Attribute Decision Making (MADM), Through these studies revealed that considering the infrastructures developed for mine and plants, earned incomes and changing the community, mining activity in this area not only increases the social and regional sustainability but also improves it to a higher level."

In the UK, powered supports are normally salvaged from longwall faces on completion of production, for reuse on the next unit. Where a spare set of supports are held, the salvaged supports are often stored in underground roadways awaiting installation. One mine in the UK extracts a 5m section, and holds two sets of 2x950t powered supports, each weighing approx. 35t and having closed dimensions of 8m long, 2.5 high and 1.75m wide. As the first set would not be required for over 12 months, and because of space limitations below ground, it was decided that the supports would be left in situ, the district sealed, and reopened at a later date for support salvage. The paper described the decision making process, and the inertisation of the sealed district utilising nitrogen generated on the mine surface and piped to the point of use. The re-entry and re-ventilation of the district are also described. The paper then goes on to describe in more detail the discovery of a spontaneous combustion event that occurred in the waste behind the powered supports, and its treatment and control using extra nitrogen brought to the mine by tanker and introduced at strategic locations along the faceline via boreholes, leading to a successful salvage and re-sealing.

Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the 3D surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. Studying the geometrical and temporal relationship between these two signals opens a broad window through which new management techniques become apparent. In this paper we discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining. This research was carried out in association with the Chevron Mining underground molybdenum mine in Questa, New Mexico. Some of these new techniques will be integrated into the decision management process at the mine and will provide insight on ore production, draw control, and safe reclamation. The science of signal processing involves the analysis and interpretation of physical processes that vary with time. Two general categories of signals1 are recognized. A continuous signal is a waveform of varying amplitude that is continuous in time (such as a sine wave). A discrete signal is a sequence of quantized values. The independent time variable and amplitude are sampled periodically such that we only know the value and shape of the waveform at the sampling frequency. Displacements measured by a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver are an example of this. Discrete signals may be studied in the time, frequency, autocorrelation, or wavelet domains. In this paper the amount of ore extracted from the mine and the measured surface displacements are analyzed in the time domain.

The fact that methane ignitions continue to occur at the mining face indicates that monitoring with machine-mounted methanometers does not always indicate the presence of high methane concentrations. Methane concentrations at the face change quickly due to changes in airflow. By measuring these changes in airflow, it may be possible to predict changes in face methane levels more quickly. Currently there are no techniques or instruments to accurately measure airflow inby the mouth of the ventilation curtain or tubing. Tests conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery compare the data provided by one-, two-, and three-axis ultrasonic anemometers. The effects of changes in airflow direction and turbulence on instrument readings are discussed, and guidelines are given for selecting the type of instruments to be used for monitoring airflow near the mining face.

The International Seabed Authority and a number of countries have or are in the process of developing environmental impact assessment guidelines and legislation for seafloor mineral development. The formal decision to grant a project an environmental permit is based on an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA), culminating in an environmental impact statement (EIS). The EIS needs to be supported by sufficient data upon which an assessment of impacts can be made and mitigation measures developed. Given the remote locations of many seafloor prospects, collection of sufficient environmental data to inform an EIS is often a difficult, expensive and lengthy process.

The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a new $AUD1.5 billion underground traffic route in Queensland, Australia, a project of the Brisbane City Council. The tunnel is approximately 5.2 km long, bypassing the Central Business District, and is adjacent to and below major buildings and services. Road tunnel alignment issues include the complex southern connections to the Pacific Motorway and the design of ramps to the east and the north. A review of road tunnel alignment criteria and accident data for Australian and overseas tunnels, similar to the proposed NSBT, are discussed. The key findings of this review lead to a rationalization of the traditional tunnel cross sectional width allocation. The road alignment design elements adopted for the NSBT are also discussed. The NSBT route crosses beneath the Brisbane River. Geotechnical investigations and hydrogeological modelling are described. The crossing has a fundamental impact on the alignment and the tunnelling methods. The tunnelling methods to be adopted and the tunnel support are described. The geotechnical investigations and hydrogeology analysis culminate in the selection of a single shielded TBM for the reference design. These outcomes are related to complex issues of hydrogeology and contaminated groundwater. These are discussed in detail.
