Science involves the study of the nature and behaviour of natural things and the knowledge we obtain about them. Scientific endeavour leads to the unfolding of new knowledge and adjustments to our understanding and our behavior. To indicate that we ‘know’ something may merely mean we do not feel able to, or that we do not wish to, disagree with others who claim to know; or it may mean we have either heard about it, or studied it, or understand part of it, or accept that it is true, or have seen evidence to be convinced of its veracity. What do we ‘know’ about the health effects of vibration? There are many unknowns in the field of human responses to vibration. Not all would agree on what is known and what is unknown. This paper seeks to summarize what we know that we know, what it is sometimes claimed that we know, and what we know that we do not know about the relation between exposures to vibration and our health. It also speculates on what we do not know that we do not know. Hand-transmitted vibration What we know we know We know that exposures to hand-transmitted vibration result in various disorders of the hand, including abnormal vascular and neurological function. Not all frequencies, or magnitudes, or durations, of hand-transmitted vibration cause the same effects. What we may claim to know To enable exposures to be reported and compared, they are ‘measured’ and ‘evaluated’ using defined (e.g. standardised) procedures. This involves identifying what is to be measured and specifying how it is expressed by one (or a few) numbers. Summarising a vibration exposure in a single value involves assuming the relative importance of components within the vibration (e.g. different magnitudes, frequencies, directions, and durations), so standards define ‘weightings’ for these variables. The importance of the weighted values may also be suggested, allowing ‘assessments’ according to a criterion (e.g. the probability of a specific severity of a specific disease). Standards for the measurement and evaluation of hand-transmitted vibration define a frequency weighting and time dependencies that allow the severity of vibration exposures to be assessed and the probability of finger blanching to be predicted 1. What we do not know We do not know that the frequency weighting in current standards reflects the relative importance of different frequencies and axes of vibration in producing any specific disorder. We do not know whether the energy-based daily time-dependency inherent in A(8) reflects the relative importance of vibration magnitude and daily exposure duration. Consequently, the relation between A(8) and the years of exposure to develop finger blanching, as in an appendix to ISO 5349-1 (2001), is not well-founded. We do not know, or at least there is no consensus on, the full extent of the disorders caused by hand-transmitted vibration (e.g. vascular, neurological, muscular, articular, central), or the pathogenesis of any specific disorder caused by hand-transmitted vibration, or the roles of other factors (e.g. ergonomic factors, environmental factors, or individual factors). "Diesel particulate matter (DPM) emitted from diesel engines is currently considered to be a health problem in underground mines. As a result, attempts have been made to control DPM both by reducing emission rates and by managing the DPM that gets into the mine atmosphere. This paper presents a method for modeling the generation, transfer, and distribution of DPM in coal mining sections through the use of a convection-based computer model so that controls for emitted DPM can be evaluated. A variety of ventilation strategies and diesel deployment schemes for room-and-pillar development sections were simulated to compare their effects on average DPM concentrations at several fixed and mobile personnel locations in the section. Input data for the model was gathered from actual diesel development sections and derived from experimental study results provided by other researchers. Analyzed using the model were ventilation schemes using vent tubing and brattice, exhaust location strategies on the vehicles, and the direction of ventilation at the feeder-breaker location. A summary of results from this study is presented.With diesel equipment holding an important place in underground coal mining and growing in use over time, it is important to develop and improve controls of the exhaust emissions, especially diesel particulate matter (DPM), to further reduce potential health hazards. The proper design and maintenance of diesel engines and on¬board control procedures are paramount requirements for controlling DPM successfully. There is also, however, a significant reduction potential in terms of personal exposure that can be realized by managing the DPM that gets into the airstream. Strategic design of the mining, ventilation, and equipment implementation systems remain essential for efficiently reducing the DPM concentrations.Modeling the effect of diesel exhaust contaminants upon the mine atmospheric quality will permit improved health and safety design of the overall mining and ventilation systems. Numerous studies have been performed to model the distribution/transport of gaseous and particulate emissions in the underground mine atmosphere and some very sophisticated convection/diffusion models have been developed (Skobunov, 1974; Thakur, 1974; Stefanko and Ramani, 1975; Wala, 1980; Bandopadhyay and Ramani, 1983). Most of these models were developed for a single airway or based on the assumption that the ventilation network of a mining section can be approximately represented by a single intake and a single return. The complexity of most models of the convection/diffusion type and the mobility aspect of diesel haulage units made a detailed emissions model very difficult to develop.The current model is an attempt to fill the need for a more generic tool applicable to mining sections employing multiple mobile diesel units by simplifying the convection-diffusion model to a convection-only model. The simplification is based on the fact that the diffusion coefficient will affect only the transient environmental contaminant concentrations with little or no affect on the time-weighted-average concentrations over a relatively long period such as a working shift (Lee et al., 1994). In view of the difficulties involved in mathematical modeling, the approach here is developing and using a computer simulation model. A PC-based FORTRAN 77 simulation model for the analysis of mining systems with multiple diesel sources and any ventilation network configuration was developed to study the distribution/transport of DPM in mine airways, evaluate methods of reducing DPM concentrations, and explore modifications to existing mining practice."

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). "Since its establishment in 1910 the Bureau of Mines has consistently recommended the rock-dusting of bituminous and lignitic coal mines as a preventive of widespread explosions. As with many other proposed innovations, the response to the bureau's recommendation has been slow; but during the past 10 years many coal mines have done some rock-dusting, even though probably fewer than 50 of the country's approximately 6,000 coal mines are thoroughly rock-dusted. Notwithstanding the inadequacy of the rock-dusting which has been done in most of the mines which have adopted the new system, numerous cases are at hand. indicating the well-founded basis of the bureau's claims regarding the effectiveness of rock-dust in stopping explosions. Very brief descriptions will be given of several cases in which explosions in coal mines of the United States are fairly definitely known to have been stopped by rock-dust during the past 5 or 6 years; in addition, several cases are cited in which explosions were stopped through the agency of rock-dust and moisture.A rock-dusted mine is one in which the floor, roof, and sides of every accessible working place, including haulage ways, airways, manways, and rooms and connections have an application of rock-dust - for instance, limestone - such that the incombustible content of the aggregate dust on those surfaces is over 60 per cent. The dust in these workings should be sampled at regular intervals to determine whether the incombustible matter in the coal-dust is less than the necessary minimum of 60 per cent; another application of rock-dust should be given when the incombustible percentage is less than 60. (As an example of thorough rock-dusting, see Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6578, 1932, which describes how rock-dusting is done in Alabama at a cost of 1.8 cents per ton of coal for a thorough application; Report of Investigations 3060, February, 1931, Rock-Dusting In A Pennsylvania Coal Mine; or Information Circular 6244, 1930, giving data, including costs, on rock-dusting in coal mines in New Mexico.)An explosion may be started by the ignition of gas, even when rock-dust is present; hence it is not correct to say that rock-dust will prevent an explosion of gas; however, if rock-dust has been applied to a working place which has present an explosive mixture of me-thane and air, and if an open light is used or a blown-out shot or an electric arc occurs, although there will very likely be an ignition and possibly an explosion, the rock-dust will certainly prevent ignition of the coal-dust nearby, and unless the general atmosphere has an explosive gas mixture, the rock-dust will stop propagation of the flame throughout the mine. In other words, if an explosion is started by gas or by coal-dust and the mine has been rock-dusted as defined, the rock-dust will prevent widespread extension of the explosion, unless the general atmosphere contains methane and air in explosive proportions.With these definitions clearly in mind, instances are now given where rock-dust has played a prominent part in the stopping of several explosions. No cases have been included where there was any reasonable doubt that rock-dust had taken a definite part in the limiting of the explosions."

"Good ventilation is one of the first requisites in the safe and efficient operation of a coal mine. If a mine is gassy, the uninterrupted circulation of an adequate supply of fresh air is imperative if that mine is to operate with a relative degree of safety. That ventilation is not •only a safety consideration, but is an extremely important economic factor is shown by the fact that in many mines 50 per cent of the total power cost is for ventilation.The system used in the Graceton Coal & Coke Co. mine, Graceton, Pa., is believed to be unusual in many ways. Its application in this mine has re¬sulted in good ventilation of the working faces, no interruption to the venti¬lating current through the use of doors. a large- portion of the air circulated by the fan reaching the working places, low velocity air currents on traveling and haulage ways, low water gage and power consumption of the fan, and well-ventilated gob areas.This investigation was made possible through the courtesy of W. H. Robertson, mine superintendent. Fred Roberts, mining engineer, and Floyd Phillippi, mine foreman, assisted in the collection of information.The Graceton mine is a slope, opening the Upper Freeport or E bed, on the Pennsylvania Railroad about midway between Blairsville and Indiana at Graceton, Indiana County, Pa. The production is approximately 1,000 tons of coal per day and about 170 men are employed underground. The mine is considered gassy and was found to be liberating approximately 300,000 cubic feet of methane in 24 hours. The return airways terminate at a circular, concrete lined shaft 12 feet in diameter and about 115 feet deep at which is the exhaust fan.Mining is done by a block system with flat or level entries turned off the main slope at intervals of 1,350 feet, off which the butt headings are turned up the grade parallel to the slope. Rooms, which are about 225 feet long and 12 feet wide, are turned off the butt headings on 80-foot centers, leaving a block about 68 feet thick between rooms.Haulage on the main slope is by rope, with the hoist on the surface. This hoist is electrically driven through a 500-h.p., 2,300-volt motor. The rope used in this haulage is 1-1/8 inches in diameter. There are five electric trolley locomotives - one 10-ton and four 6-ton - which do all of the hauling in the flat and butt entries.Before it is blasted all of the solid coal and as much of the pillar coal as can be cut with safety is undercut by permissible mining machines. Shooting is done by shot firers who use permissible explosives, electric detonators, and dry-cell, nonpermissible batteries.In rooms where conditions are normal, timbering consists of two rows of posts on 4-foot centers. Posts are required to be within 6 feet of the face in machine-cut places and within 3 feet of the face in hand-mined places. Timbering on entries, where required, is of two types: a bar hitched into the ribs and supported by the coal, or 3-piece sets. The legs of the 3- piece sets used on the slope are set well back into the rib to prevent their being. knocked out by a wreck."

Material used for flame safety lamp gauzes should possess the following qualities: (1) mechanical strength, (2) resistance to corrosion under service con- ditions, (3) a relatively high thermal conductivity, (4) a melting point above the ignition temperature of mine gas. Heretofore, three metals have been used for flame lamp gauzes, namely: steel, brass and copper. While each of these has the requisite qualities to some extent, none of them is an ideal gauze material. Copper gauzes lack mechanical strength, especiall, after they have been heated; brass and copper both have comparatively low melting points so that before the gas ignition is reached the gauze metal is attacked and oxidized under the action of the heat. Steel corrodes readily in damp atmos- pheres and if the lamp stands unused under these conditions for some time, the gauzes become unfit for service. Tests of these three materials have shown that steel offers the highest degree of safety. Manel metal, the natural alloy of nickel and copper, is practically noncor- rodible. Its relting point is approximately the same as that of steel. From time to time it has been suggested that this alloy might be a better gauze material than steel, since gauzes made of Monel metal should have all of the good qualities that steel gauzes possess and, in addition, would not corrode appreciably in ordinary mine atmospheres. One advocate of this use for Monel metal, the International Nickel Co., through their development engineer, Mr. Robert J. McKay, cooperated with the Interior Department, Bureau of ines, to the extent of supplying twelve sets of 30 mesh, Monel-metal gauzes for tests. Those gauzes were made up by the same lamp manufactur- er ho rade the steel gauzes used in the previous investigation. Being made by the same processes as the steel gauzes, these Manel-metal gauzes were needlessly given the same anti-rust coating that is always applied to steel gauzes to prevent any corrosion before the gauzes are used. In previous tests the Bureau of Mines had collected data as to the behavior of steel gauzes. In determining the value of Monel metal as a gauze material, it was planned to obtain similar data with Monel-metal gauzes, and thus make a direct comparison with the steel gauzes. This is the first of a series of reports dealing with development of a method of strengthening bituminous-coal-mine roof. Later reports will describe the progress made with injecting high cohesive and adhesive bonding agents into bedding planes and mine tests of roof strata strengthened by the bonds formed. The concept of strengthening roof strata in coal mines by inserting steel rods in the form of bolts has been widely accepted by the coal industry. The benefits of increased production and safety derived from this type of roof support has more than justified the increased cost of roof bolting. However, not all coal-mine roof structure is amenable to this type of support, and failures occur owing to the heterogeneity and variable character of mine-roof strata.3/

One phase of the Bureau of Minest work in the field of health and safety is the promotion of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respir atory protective devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of what it considers the minimum re- quirements for oxygen breathing-apparatus,3 gas masks, hose masks,5/ and mechanical filter-respirators (a schedule of requirements for hose- type supplied-air respirators is being prepared). Approval of oxygen breathing-apparatus is given by the Safety Division; approval of other types of respiratory equipment is given by the Health Division, both divisions being in the Health and Safety Branch, Manufacturers of respiratory protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau for approval under the requirements of these schedules. As a prerequisite to submitting a device for approval, the Bureau requires a statement that the device is completely developed and of the design and material that the manufacturer believes suitable for a finished marketable device; that the device has been

Most gasolines and naphthas are mixtures of paraffin- series hydrocarbons and comprise such substances as pentane , hexane , heptane , octane , and others up to perhaps dodecane . Many of these hydrocarbons , when mixed with the proper proportions of air and ignited , are highly explosive . It is due to this characteristic that gasoline has become so important as a fuel in internal -combustion engines . Gasoline and naphtha also are used in the industry as solvents and cleaning agents . Because of their explosive properties they are dangerous to use unless the composition is so chosen that the vapor pressure of the mixture is not high enough to produce explosive mixtures with air at the temperature at which they are used . Hydrocarbon mixtures may be made less hazardous by adding some incombustible liquid , such as carbon tetrachloride . Barrier reports the amount of carbon tetrachloride that must be added to different naphthas to render such mixtures free from fire and explosion hazards . He found that the amount of carbon tetrachloride that must be present in the final mixture of naphtha and carbon tetrachloride varied with the density of the naphtha . Of the naphthas tested the amount of carbon tetrachloride necessary to render such mixtures free from fire and explosion hazards ranged from 30 to 70 percent . .. Determination of the fire and explosion hazards of carbon tetrachloridehydrocarbon mixtures would be easy if the boiling points and vapor pressures of the two were the same at any given temperature . The fact that carbon tetrachloride boils at 76° C. while the boiling points of the hydrocarbons found in gasoline and naphtha may range from 37° , the boiling point of pentane ,

"IntroductionMassive sulphides occurring in metal mines are inflammable and furnish the fuel for many mine fires. Actual sampling has shown that dangerous amounts of sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide may occur in mine atmospheres after blasting in massive sulphides. Probably some .of the finer sulphide in the material being blasted burns while it is in contact with the flame from the explosion. It’s also possible that oxygen of the explosive enters into the reaction.That sulphide dusts are explosive under some conditions has long been suspected, but the theory has not been generally accepted as having been proved. Evidence now at hand appears to be conclusive that such explosions do occasionally occur in mine workings in massive sulphides. Information from several mines working in heavy sulphides shows that occasionally, sulphur dioxide in larger amounts than could be expected from the blasting alone are occasionally thrown out into the mine atmosphere during blasting. Accidents have occurred and lives have been lost by men being caught in such gases. Also it appears in a few cases that damage done to timber in stopes by concussions has been greater than could 112.ve been expected from the regular blasts. In most of these cases the unusually large amounts of Sulphur dioxide could only be accounted for by an explosion or by an ignition of sulphide dusts. When this occurs it is probable that the settled dust is stirred up by the first shot of a round, then the dust cloud is ignited by this or a succeeding shot.In one instance, the senior author, while wearing breathing apparatus, returned to a station to take a gas sample immediately after a raise round had been blasted, and encountered a heavy white fume or smoke that was corrosive to the skin and which forced a retreat. The sample, which was taken farther back in a greatly diluted atmosphere, showed a high percentage (0.18) of sulphur dioxide. The station and the raise which was just being started were very dry and the walls and floor of the station contained settled sulphide dust which apparently was ignited by the blast."

"SummaryAir velocity distribution surveys on four mechanized longwall faces are presented and discussed. Although there are discernible patterns in the velocity distribution, there are wide differences in distribution in the cases examined. This can be attributed to differences in mining and face geometry. An important factor is air leakage into the goaf.IntroductionOver the past two years several intensive air velocity surveys have been carried out in West Virginia coal mines as part of a programme aimed at understanding dust transport mechanisms on mechanized longwall faces. These are presented here and some of the patterns of velocity distribution are discussed.Ventilation survey methodologyThe air velocity vector consists of three mutually perpendicular subvectors; the vertical subvector is directed toward the roof, one of the horizontal subvectors is parallel to the coal face and the other pointing to the gob. The air velocity which was measured in this paper is the horizontal subvector parallel to the coal face.To record the velocity distributions at the longwall faces, the surveying stations and the surveying points were established as follows.(1) The first station usually was set at the third support from the headentry T-junction. Within the first few supports, the air coming from the intake airway encounters a sharp right-angle turn at the T-junction, and forms a turbulent region close to the coal face. The intake air in this region is also influenced by the motors that drive the face conveyer. But when the air reaches the different. But for the same face the number was the same. The main air-travelling area was divided into six to 12 equally sized sub-areas, and each surveying point was situated approximately at the centre of the sub-area.The velocity survey was carried out by two persons, one reading the meter and the other taking down the readings. A complete survey at one station took about 5-8 min. Usually, the dimension of the cross-sectional area was measured during that time.A third person used the smoke tubes to observe the following: (I) the air movement patterns at different locations; (2) the extent and the direction of the air leakage; and (3) the machines' influence on the main airflow. At the same time he observed and recorded the roof conditions and the compactness of the roof-caving in the gob."

Data were obtained by the writer from a number of the large coul-mine operators in Illinois, on the consumption and cost of timber used in their mines and the quality of the timber now being used as compared with former years. This information supplemented by comparative date for previous years published in bulletins of the filinois Coal Mining Investigation series, and other sources, is presented below. This survey is part of a cooperative study with the . S. Forest Service, of the mine timber situation, with particular regard to the economies to be derived by better selection, preparation, and storage of timber, and especially treatment with preservatives to prolong the life. Geo. S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the J. S. Bureau of Mines, under whose general direction the work was done, gave valuable advice and criticism. R. B. Miller, State Forester, contributed helpful data which he had recent- ly obtained in an independent study of the mine-timber situation in Illinois.

The theory of electromagnetic fields indicates such fields could be used to detect and locate trapped miners. To be useful, the hardware of the system must meet a number of requirements, including small size, intrinsic safety, and rugged construction. Such hardware has been built, and the system has been tested by the Bureau of Mines and its contractors. These tests indicate that the electromagnetic method provides a practical means to locate miners in emergencies.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes an investigation of the amount of respirable dust adhering to the surfaces of seven run-of-face broken bituminous coals. The number of respirable-size (0.9 to 10 micrometers) particles adhering to the run-of-face coal ranged from 1011 to 1012 particles per pound of coal and was approximately inversely proportional to the mean lump size of the coal sample, otherwise it did not vary significantly with the coal seam, mining method, or winning machine. Based on these results, about 16 lb of ordinary run-of-face broken coal would have enough respirable-size adhering dust to contaminate 1,000,000 ft3 of air up to the 2 mg/m3 level, if this adhering dust should become airborne. Although brief studies here suggest that a negligible amount of new respirable dust is formed due to fracture of the broken coal during dropping, dislodging of old adhering particles during secondary handling operations is a potentially dangerous source of airborne respirable dust.

The Rainy Creek deposits lie at the western base of the Kilbuck Mountains, about So miles southeast of Bethel, in southwestern Alaska. The deposits were brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by placer miners on Rainy Creek after cinnabar concentrates were recovered by their gold-mining operations. In August 1947 the Bureau excavated 1,500 feet of dozer trenches totaling 2,547 cubic yards. Further hand trenching in the bottoms of the dozer trenches on the surface totaled 1,440 linear feet, or 40 cubic yards. Nineteen samples were taken for analyses.

This analysis was conducted in response to concerns raised by the Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives regarding the potential impacts on automobile production, GNP and employment resulting from embargoing south African supplies of the platinum-group metals, platinum and rhodium. This analysis should be considered an addendum to the recently released study in which the direct economic costs I of a U.S. embargo on selected South African strategic and critical materials are estimated. The estimated GNP and employment impacts result when a mineral shortage reduces domestic industrial production and are in addition to the direct costs estimated in the earlier study. The direct cost to this nation resulting from a decision to embargo six south African strategic and critical minerals was estimated at $1.85 billion per year during the 1988-1992 time frame of the study. The estimated direct costs include the costs to U.S. consumers resulting from higher strategic mineral prices, lower mineral consumption, and the cost of developing higher cost domestic mineral resources. A large proportion of the costs result from the shortage of the two metals: platinum and rhodium. The average direct annual cost of embargoing is estimated at about $1.4 billion for platinum and $384 million for rhodium.2

The Idol zinc prospect, formerly known as the Comstock, was examined by Harold B. Ewoldt, a Bureau of Mines' engineer, accompanied by Deane F. Kent of the United States Geological Survey on July 22, 1943. Previous to that time, the Geological Survey had contoured and studied the area. As a part of the war minerals program, further investigation of the area was recommended. The Dalton property, a mile and a half northeast of the Idol property, was examined during the progress of the work at the Idol, and it was decided to include this property also in the project. From February 7, 1944, to May 16, 1944, six holes totaling 2,739 feet were diamond-drilled on the Idol property and eight holes totaling 1,850 feet were diamond-drilled, and three pits channel sampled on the Dalton property. The drilling showed sphalerite to be sparsely distributed through a 100 foot thickness of the Kingsport member of the Knox dolomite.

An experimental investigation was conducted to assay the relation between natural gas concentration and ignitibility of the gallery atmosphere . Both the gas concentration representing maximum ignitibility and the relationship between certain properties of the explosives and their incendivity are discussed . The data show that variation in the natural gas content in the gallery can have a highly significant effect on ignitibility of the gallery atmosphere ; maximum ignitibility of the atmosphere by permissible explosives occurs with approximately 8.1 percent natural gas . The study also shows that incendivity of a permissible explosive cannot be determined only by its detonation velocity , oxygen balance , or ballistic mortar strength . However , for similar type explosives , trends observed indicate that their incendivity increases with detonation velocity or bulk strength . Additionally , for underoxidized explosives studied here , the more negative the oxygen balance the less incendive was the explosive within a class defined by salt content .

Enclosed cabs are a primary means of reducing the silica dust exposure of equipment operators at surface mines. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has investigated various factor effects on enclosed cab air filtration system performance. Factors experimen­tally investigated were intake filter efficiency, intake air leakage, intake filter loading (filter flow resistance), recirculation filter use and wind velocity effects on cab penetra­tion (inside to outside cab concentration ratio). Adding an intake pressurizer fan to the filtration system was also investigated. Results indicate that the intake filter efficiency and recirculation filter were the two most influential factors on cab penetration. Use of a recirculation filter significantly reduced cab penetration over the intake air filter by itself due to the multiplicable filtration of the cab interior air. Cab penetration was also affected to a lesser extent by intake filter loading and air leakage. Adding an intake pressurizer fan notably increased intake airflow and cab pressure while providing only minor changes to cab penetration.
