It is the nature of the initial detonation to the powder around the cap which governs the greater or less effect of the explosion of the whole charge. The cap communicates to the first particles of powder a disruptive impulse, which, according to the nature and strength of the cap, more or less completely overthrows their equilibrium and decomposes the powder with great energy, setting up sympathetic vibrations that explode the particles of powder in turn by the violent disturbances or friction between them in a regular succession of impulses and decompositions, which, if started with sufficient energy, are of such intense heat and velocity that the rupturing force of the explosive is developed practically instantaneously. This detonation has already been shown to be not only the result of mechanical force, but a combination of extremely sudden chemical and dynamical reactions which set up vibrations to which different powders are more or less susceptible, and these explosive reactions will be propagated through the mass of the powder according to the intensity of the vibrations and the resistance with which their motion is opposed by the nature and consistency of the powder, whether it be difficult or easy to oxidize, soft and plastic like dynamite, or hard. If the initial detonation of the powder surrounding the cap is of the highest degree, the vibrations will be most intense and will be propagated further through the mass than by a poorer detonation. Hence the different degrees of detonation. Unless the first particles of powder are so thoroughly decomposed by a detonation of high order, or first degree, as to convey the necessary heat and energy to detonate the whole charge, the greatest force of the powder will not be developed. There will frequently be unbottomed holes or pieces of unexploded powder scattered about, or both, and the air in the mine will be contaminated with some obnoxious gases that have not been completely oxidized.

The ability to simulate the explosive effects of land mines on military vehicles is a valuable capability in the defense community. The current competency levels of such simulations, however, are in need of improvement. Experiments have been conducted to measure the explosive induced impulse of a land mine on a steel plate placed above the explosive charge. The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a variety of simulation tests conducted in order to correctly predict the empirical impulse data gathered in corresponding experiments. The computer hydrocode, AUTODYN v5.0.01 (Century Dynamics, 2003), is the simulation code used to simulate, and process the results. The experimental data has not been made available to allow computer analysts to exercise their codes on the problem without the temptation to tweak parameters in order to match computer code predictions with experimental results

Optimum Colliery is presently experiencing a shortfall of stripping capacity in order to meet its production requirements. Due to the long dragline procurement times, several alternative stripping methods were evaluated in order to alleviate this shortfall in the interim period. Based on the experience gained at the mine. The writer will discuss some of the important factors which influence dragline performance and show how these factors may by used in a theoretical approach to analyse various dragline applications.

"The High Speed 2D Analysis program allows the user to bring in data from several different sources. Of course, keyboard entry is included as a source. Other data is inputted through the serial port (X-2321 of the PC. Two types of data are transferred via the serial port. The first is the tablet digitizer data. The three types supported presently are the GTCO, tablet digitizers. and the Calcomp 2500 and 9100 series To transfer digitized data turn on the selected digitizer and place the cursor on the tablet. Enter the High Speed pmg.ram and select from the Input Program menu the Digitize Inputs(20) option and follow the instructions. TO exit the session, either a keyboard entry or a cursor button is pressed. The second type of serial port input Is from the collectors of the listed survey systems. The mineral industry is leading towards a technology driven optimization process. Drilling and blasting are such unit operations in a mine, which can alter the balance sheet of the mine if not planned properly. The development, improvement and utilisation of innovative technologies in terms of blast monitoring instruments and explosives technology are important for cost effectiveness and safety of mineral industries. The ever-growing demand of mineral has compelled the industry to adopt mega opencast projects with big equipments. This has necessitated use of few hundred tonnes of explosives in each blast. The bulk delivered fourth generation explosives has solved the problem of explosive loading to a large extent. The priming of bulk delivered explosives in Indian mines uses the conventional PETN/TNT based cast boosters. As the conventional cast booster possess safety problems in terms of handling and use, so Indian Explosives Ltd., has developed an emulsion based cast booster (Powergel Boost).

Liquified petroleum gas mixed with oxygen has been used as a new type of mixed gas source for gas detonating system. The experimental studies have been done on the detonation feature of gas detonating transmission in a long and thin tube, the transmitting reliability for detonating network, the design on gas exploder and test devices. The results of the study show that (1 )Liquified petroleum mixed with oxygen can be used as a new type of regular gas source. (2)The transmission of detonating wave is reliable for new type of mixed gas in a 500-meter long plastic tube with 3mm inner diameter and the detonating velocity is up to 2500m/s. The detonating wave can surely initiate and transmit several branched gas detonating cap and explosive through the end of detonating network, the tubes inner diameter for the detonating quenching is 0. I’mm. (3)The gas exploder designed by authors can be used for gas propotional distribution,strong turbulence-mixing,initiating by reflex shock wave and safety control purposes. The developed double flowmeter can be used together or seperately in responsible for main testing in the system.

Seismic networks provide the primary technology for monitoring compliance with a comprehensive test ban treaty. The design goal of the network is the identification of possible clandestine explosions detonated below the earth’s surface and possible in the oceans. Complementary technologies such as infrasonic, hydroaccoustic and radionucleide (particulates and noble gases) monitoring supplement the seismic monitoring covering explosions in the atmosphere and oceans. Seismic sources that will produce detectable signals will be both natural and man made in origin. Naturally occurring events include earthquakes, many of which are beneath the oceans or deeper than it is possible to drill, and volcanic eruptions. Accurate locations of such events to depths of beyond 10 km precludes consideration of these events further.

Step 4: Selection of explosives and initiation system Various types of explosives are manufactured in India and a wide choice is available among them that include nitroglycerin based explosives, slurries, emulsions, ANFO (ammonium nitrate mixed with fuel oil) and heavy ANFO. The choice is also available between cartridged and bulk loading systems. In Indian mines, much importance is unduly given to the cost of explosives alone which is not conducive to optimization of blast design parameters. The concept of energy per meter of blasthole and the way in which the total explosive energy is partitioned between shock and heave is not considered in the prevailing practices. Besides, very little efforts are made to objectively evaluate the performance of explosives for a given site condition. Tailoring explosives is limited to changing the density of the bulk explosives. Cartridged explosives are still being extensively used in large operations where bulk explosives should be the preferred choice.

Certain blasting applications are more prone to the generation of significant levels of nitrogen dioxide post blast fumes, more commonly referred to as after blast smoke, generally ranging in color from dark yellow to bright red. This paper reviews basic background chemistry defining the observed fumes and attempts to correlate geology, blast design, and explosive composition effects on the level of nitrogen dioxide that can be observed in various blasting conditions. Additionally, a test setting for evaluating the generation of post blast fumes is presented with pertinent test data detailing generic explosive formulation modifications which effect the overall level of post detonation generation of nitrogen dioxide.

The world class iron ore mines at Mt Whaleback, Tom Price and Paraburdoo located in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia must mine the Mt McRae Shale to obtain high grade ore from the Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. But for those working in the blasting industry, a number of obstacles are created when old man winter blows in. In addition to the obvious concerns regarding personal protection, Mother Nature can throw some very nasty weather at the blasting crew trying to travel with explosives products from the magazine site to the job site. As such, divers need to be familiar with cold, ice, and snow driving conditions both on and off the blast site. It’s critical to know what to expect before you leave. Keep informed of the latest weather and road conditions as they change often; it will help you make the right choice in clothing and driving habits. Remember bridges and overpasses will freeze first even in temperatures above or near the freezing mark due to the effects of wind chill. Plan to take extra time to and from the job site.

The tunnel was driven into a conglomerate formation, of lacustrine_fluvial origins, consisting in carbonate clasts with a sandy_silty matrix and calcitic cement. ""Drilling andblasting"" had to be adopted in place of a tunnel boring machine which had showeduneconomical performances. Good advance speed rates were achieved notwithstanding thepresence of some above structures to safeguard. The nearest structure (an old votivechapel) was less than 10 meters (33 ft.) far from the tunnel crown; the nearest residentialstructure was at about 15 m (49 ft.)."

Good toe breakage and a flat working bench after blasting are important parameters to achieve a high productivity during material loading and reduce the necessity for secondary blasting. Good toe breakage requires a proper burden – side spacing design and a suitable sub-drilling. With unfavourable jointed rock mass conditions the use of horizontal bottom holes still can be found as common work practice even that this is associated to high risks.
