Copper metal has important role in the basic industrials, as if it did not exist, modern human life would not develop! Copper leaching, as the first step, is important step in copper production processes. In this research, efficient factors on the leaching have been investigated. For this reason, four efficient factors on leaching namely pH, liquid to solid ratio (L/S), temperature and time, as independent variables, were optimized using response surface (RSM) with D-optimal. A quadratic equation was used to create response and contours. According to the results from analysis of variance (ANOVA), the value of determination coefficient (R2=96.77%) indicates that the model was good fit. Optimum experiment condition also was found: pH of 1, L/S of 8.24, temperature of 26.06 ? and time of 43.64 min. At this condition, the maximum recovery of copper was equaled to 92/38 in which good desirability achieved.

Surface roughness and acuteness are known as the two of the main properties of the particle morphology affecting the behavior of the powders in the process. Since the techniques used for the morphological characterization of powders by 2-dimensional microscopic measurement from the polished sections that have some disadvantages, the 3-dimensional analysis has often relied on measurements of particle morphology. A review of literature data was presented for high-grade barite and pyrite particles ground by ball and autogenous mills to determine the morphological properties using a new 3-D approach based on BET nitrogen gas adsorption and Permaran methods. Micromeritics Flowsorb II 2300 instrument which employs BET nitrogen adsorption technique was used for the specific surface area measurements and the roughness of the particles. Permaran (manufactured by Outokumpu Oy) was used for the measurements of airflow resistance of powder samples for the acuteness. Spherical glass beads were used as reference sample for the acuteness measurements. The obtained parameters, which are surface roughness and acuteness, were corre-lated with the floatability performance of those mineral particles. The flotation performances of those particles ground in different mills (ball and autogenous) were also evaluated by a Hallimond tube. The results showed that lower roughness and acuteness values caused higher flotation recoveries for both barite and pyrite particles that were tested independently in different type of the mills. In other words; particles with smooth surfaces resulted in better floatability for barite and pyrite minerals studied.

This paper presents the results of pilot scale column flotation applications in the two different copper concentrators in Turkey. The Kure Copper Plant is located in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. In Kure, a very fine grinding requirement for an adequate level of liberation makes a successful flotation difficult and consequently the final concentrate can hardly assay above 16% Cu Column flotation tests were conducted at the plant site using two different column types The experiments proved that the grade of the concentrate could be increased from about 14% Cu to 25-26% Cu. Murgul Cakmakkaya Copper Concentrator is the largest copper concentrator in Turkey. Although concentrate production capacity is around 170,000 tons annually with 22-23% Cu content, this figure tends to be much lower than that. In Murgul a Turbo Column of Multotec Company of South Africa was employed. As a result of systematic column flotation tests, the grade of the concentrate was increased from 20.3% Cu to 28.7% Cu.

The Chelopech Mine, located in Central Bulgaria, is one of Europe?s largest underground copper- gold mines, currently mines and processes approximately one million tonnes of ore per year. Copper concentrates containing gold and silver with significant arsenic content are produced and sold on the world markets. The operation was acquired by Dundee Precious Metals in 2003. A modernization program for the Mine and Plant has since been in progress to increase both production and mechanical reliability, and also to optimize metallurgical recoveries. Since then, mine output and plant throughput have doubled, plant availabilities and utilization have increased significantly, and overall metallurgical performance for copper and gold improved. The paper presents the systematic approach for obtaining and analyzing data, communicating it, and making suggestions for changes to the technological parameters and flowsheet in order to maximize metal recoveries. These studies have correlated the ore characteristics (particle size distributions, metal assays, and Cu and Au mineralogical and phase analyses) with the actual plant performance (kinetics, recoveries, and throughput). Cu recovery by size has been calculated from the mineralogical analyses of feed, concentrate and tails, with the most significant losses being identified in terms of fraction and phase recoveries. This has provided the recommendations (some of them tested in plant) for changes in the grinding and flotation circuits.

In September 2005, after 30 years experiencing in operating an ESF using a falling water film shell cooling system, Antam entered the new era in operating an ESF, after completely modernized its ESF No. 2 from a falling water film shell cooling system to a copper cooling system. Further, in the beginning of 2007, Ferronickel plant No. 3, where its ESF also uses copper coolers, was successfully commissioned. By operating an ESF using a copper cooling technology, Antam has to face some challenges to establish the operation stability. Besides that, the chances to maximize the furnace efficiency are greatly opened. The shielded-arc mode of electrode tip is selected to operate an ESF under relatively high furnace power to produce metal having tap temperature below 1500? and slag having tap temperature below 1600?. It leads to electric current unbalance. Further, operating an ESF using a copper cooler system under high voltage as consequence of the furnace power raise increases metal and slag tap temperature. This condition damages furnace integrity fast. Besides that, relatively high metal temperature increases its pressure during metal tapping. It leads to failure in closing the metal tap hole. The main different ways in operating an ESF using a falling water film shell cooling system and a copper cooling system lie in the electrode tip mode, the water specification used for cooler, metal tap block maintenance and allowed metal & slag level in furnace. Since a copper cooler system allows an ESF to be operated by consuming nickel ore having ratio Fe / Ni up to eight and producing slag having relatively high Fe content in slag, an undesirable silicon reversion phenomenon becomes an obstacle in reaching the operation stability. A copper cooler technology lets Antam to take a chance to increase its capacity. Modernizing the ESF No.2 had increased its furnace power from 17 MWh to 25 MWh. Meanwhile the ESF No. 3 can be operated up to 42 MWh. This technology allows an ESF to be operated under relatively high furnace power above 25 MWh safely as well as prolong the campaign life of ESF brick. Further, lowering ESF power consumption, extending the limitation of ratio S/M in nickel ore consumed and adjusting Ni grade in ferronickel product can be gained by applying this technology.

In flotation, particulate materials are separated by controlling the hydrophobicity of the particles using appropriate collectors. In this regard, contact angle (?) is the most important process variable. However, the flotation models used in industry today do not include ? as a parameter. As result, flotation circuits are designed based on the first-order flotation rate constants (k) determined from laboratory experiments. A problem with this approach is that laboratory experiments usually give substantially higher k values than achievable in full-scale operations, which makes it difficult to use the model for plant design. In the present work, we have developed a model from first principles using both surface chemistry and hydrodynamic parameters, such as ?, ?-potentials, surface tension (?), particle size, energy dissipation rate, etc. The basic approach is similar to the one developed previously for bubble-particle interactions under laminar flow conditions (Yoon and Mao, J. Colloid and Interface Science, 181, 61, 1996) except that the model parameters have been modified by considering the turbulence in a flotation cell. In addition, the model describes the recovery processes in froth phase, including bubble-coarsening due to coalescence. Based on this model, we have developed a computer simulator (FlotSim) that can be used to design flotation circuits from the mineralogical (or liberation) data on the feed and the hydrodynamic characteristics of a flotation machine. Since the model is dynamic, it can also be used for process control. Further, the simulator has predictive capacity as it is based on a first-principles model. The model-based simulator has been validated in a carefully controlled bench-scale flotation experiments. Beneficiation and dephosphorization of refractory oolitic hematite ore are investigated in this paper. It is shown that single magnetic separation, gravity separation or flotation is unable to recover iron effectively from the ore due to the complex mineralogy. The joint separation by spiral chute-shaking table shows a prospect for the treatment of the ore. An iron concentrate with 58.67% iron grade and 51.93% recovery is obtained by the joint separation of spiral chute and shaking table under the fineness of ?0.074mm 90% and dispersant dosage of 2kg/t for a sample ore of 37.51% Fe and 0.88% P. However, P content in the concentrate is still up to 0.52%. Dephosphorization from the concentrate is hence carried out. The final iron concentrate assaying 59.26% Fe and 0.056% P is obtained when the concentrate obtained by joint separation is leached by sulfuric acid of 1% (mass fraction) with solid percentage 10% at room temperature for 10min.

Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is traditionally used in plant operation to separate feldspars from quartz. It acts during the conditioning step as a pH regulator and an activating agent providing an excellent selectivity. However, a corrosive chemical environment and the ecological impacts from the potential fluoride ion contamination are limiting factors to use this chemical agent at an industrial scale. Investigations of the amine-feldspar interactions in the absence and presence of non-linear long-chain alcohols were carried out on two ore samples. The presence of alcohol molecules led to form a closed packed layer only on the surface of feldspars. The highest order and packing at the feldspar surface were observed with a particular alkyl chain structure as Guerbert alcohols. A new flotation process was developed and tested at both lab and pilot scales on different feldspar ores. The Guerbert alcohols allow to perform a feldspar concentrate with very low content in quartz (2.3-3.5 %) and feldspars recovery from 78 to 81 % while the aliphatic isoalcohols show a more higher recovery level (88-89 %). New HF-free process is strongly dependent on the pH range (1.7-2.5) and sulphuric acid consumption during conditioning steps. Optimal amine/alcohol weight ratio is ranged between 0.8 and 1.0. The values below 0.8 decrease strongly the flotation selectivity and the quartz recovery within the feldspar concentrates is higher than that occurs with HF.

"Innovation in the minerals industry has been lagging behind comparable industries like oil and gas. An incremental innovation culture that tolerates long lead times between invention and adoption has been exacerbated by a research grant structure that inhibits radical idea generation. Entrepreneurs who can make the link between ore source, technology and finance will cause a shift in innovation culture and open up substantial opportunities in the minerals industry of the future. By extrapolating existing trends in technology within and outside mineral processing, a crystal ball vision of future innovation is shaped with the aim to lower energy and water demand, reduce CO2 emissions, decrease operating and capital costs, reduce environmental impact, and secure a social licence to operate. Advances in nanotechnology, advanced materials and biotechnology will impact mineral processing, but the initiative for technology transfer must come from mineral processors. Laminates of graphene oxide can offer efficient filtration and separation media, while microfluidic devices will be used for desalination, solvent extraction and analysis. Substantial progress is expected on benign lixiviants and separation agents, such as nanoscale supramolecular hosts that can serve as high-capacity, selective and recyclable ligands and sorbents, and solid aminobiphosphonate-based adsorbents. Radical ideas for the recovery of precious metals from non-assayable ores and the generation of energy above unity will be adopted in selected minerals projects. In-situ mining in which microbes generate lixiviants at mineral surfaces will simplify processing circuits. Specific ores will be subjected to microwave processing and electropulse liberation to enhance recovery. Ultrafine grinding using devices of low energy consumption will be done mainly dry, followed by dry separation. New flotation cells will remove efficiently either coarse particles or ultra-fine particles, with mineral surfaces being modified not just by new reagents but also by selective microbes. Innovation in mineral processing indeed has a bright future."

Rare and rare earth metals use quite often is an indicator of national economy development. The world structure of the rare-earth metals manufacturing countries in 2015 was presented as follows: China – 94.2%, India – 2.0%, Russia – 1.8%, the USA – 1.2%, Brazil – 0.5%, Malaysia – 0.3%. In Russia, large reserves of rare-earth metals, which reach nearly 28 million tons, are revealed. Kazakhstan, possessing a raw materials source of rare-earth metals, has all prerequisites for development of branch. Rare metals are manufactured in Kazakhstan incidentally by non-ferrous metals production. The production of indium, thallium, cadmium, selenium, tellurium, bismuth is made at the Ust-Kamenogorsk lead plant; tantalum, beryllium, niobium and molybdenum – at the enterprises of “National Atomic Company Kazatomprom” JSC. Production of a titanium, magnesium and vanadium is adjusted on “Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium-magnesium Plant” JSC. Capacities for beryllic production yield are available on “Ulba Metallurgical Plant” JSC. The main producer of perrhenic production and osmium-187 is "Zhezkazganredmet" RSE. The single producer of gallium in Kazakhstan is “Aluminium of Kazakhstan” JSC; the capacity of enterprise is 25 t a year. In Kazakhstan innovative technologies for rare and rare earths mineral raw materials processing are created. The technology has been developed and a vacuum distillation apparatus has been created to purify crude selenium, which makes it possible to obtain a metal with a main component content of 99.9-99.99%. Technologies for processing of technogenic wastes and byproducts of the copper industry are developed. Implementation of technologies allow to obtain ammonium perrhenate, perrhenic acid, osmium isotope -187, tribasic lead sulphate, silver-concentrate. The technology of complex processing of black shales of Balasauskandyk deposit with the production of gold, vanadium, rare earth elements, uranium and ferrosilicon has been proposed. The processing was carried out using methods of autoclave leaching, sorption, extraction, precipitation. A highly profitable sorption technology for recovery of rhenium from solutions of underground leaching of uranium ores containing 0.2-0.4 mg/L of Re has been created. The organization of ammonium perrhenate production from solutions of uranium ore will significantly increase the volume of its production in Kazakhstan.

Producing robust agglomerates with desirable structural properties is the key to success of the heap leaching of complex, low-grade nickel laterite ores. Mechanically strong but porous agglomerates with narrow size distribution (e.g., 5 ? 40 mm) are required to build permeable and perennially stable heaps of 4 ? 10 m height. The characterization of granules? microstructure is essential for greater understanding and correlation with the concomitant mechanical properties and robustness. In this study, we used non-destructive, computed X-Ray tomography analyses and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in tandem with conventional compressive strength,and integrity/stability tests to draw links between nickel (Ni) laterite agglomerate strength/stability, internal microstructure (e.g.,porosity, inter-particle bridges) and binder type. It is shown that binder composition (e.g., tap water vs. 30% w/w H2SO4) and post-agglomeration drying both significantly impact on granules? physicochemical and microstructural properties. Acidic binder, in contrast with tap water, leads to significant incongruent leaching of different species from particles during ore-binder mixing and agglomeration. Upon wet agglomerate curing, solidified/recrystallized leached species form strong intra-granular solid bridges which, lead to greater compressive strength of dry agglomerates. Structural stability/integrity of cured agglomerates in acidic solution, however, decreases dramatically due to greater porosity and acid solubility of intra-granular solid bridges. These findings are useful in shedding more light on agglomerate structure characteristics and their optimization for enhanced column and heap leaching with concentrated sulphuric acid.

Industrially proven and applied nitrogen species catalyzed (i.e. NSC) acidic pressure leaching has been utilized to treat a number of ores, concentrates and recycled materials. This versatile technology offers many advantages including low temperatures, low pressures, low capital costs, low operating costs, faster throughput and less costly materials of construction than conventional pressure oxidation. This paper will elucidate the application of this technology for production of gold, silver, palladium, rhodium, zinc, germanium, gallium, cobalt, copper, molybdenum, rhenium and nickel. Recycled material applications will also be elucidated. In addition, details of an application for treatment of a refractory chalcopyrite copper and gold bearing ore will be presented and pertinent economics discussed.

"Buzwagi Gold Mine (BGM) is operated by Acacia Mining and located in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of central Tanzania. The mine treats a sulphide copper-gold ore to produce gold in form of doré bars and a concentrate containing gold, copper and silver. The BGM comminution circuit includes a primary crushing stage with a gyratory crusher and two grinding circuits using a Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill and a ball mill. Currently, the grinding circuits are inefficient in achieving the aspired product fineness of xP,80 = 125 µm even at low to normal throughputs (450-600 t/h). An optimization study of the circuit performance was conducted to improve product fineness through circuit surveys, experimental lab work and simulations. The analysis of survey data revealed inefficient grinding operation characterized by ball mill product (xP,80 > 400 µm) coarser than designed and higher hydrocyclone cut sizes (xT > 200 µm), too. In MODSIM several options were simulated such as reduction of vortex finder and apex diameters, reduction of SAG screen aperture, and modification of cyclone feed density. An improvement of product fineness could be achieved by simulation of the cumulative changes but it was also concluded that the current equipment cannot achieve the target. Further simulations showed that a second ball mill might help to achieve the desired fineness as well as an increase of grinding throughput by up to 26 %. INTRODUCTION Simulation of comminution, particularly grinding and classification, has received great attention for many years, due to the fact that the unit operation is by far the most important both in terms of energy consumption as well as overall plant performance (King, 2001; Wills et al., 2006). The use of simulation is advantageous due to low cost as well as its ability to consider many variables simultaneously. Moreover, there are some benefits for optimizing grinding operations by simulation like decreased unit operating costs, increased capacity, and improved performance of downstream processes due to improved feed size distribution. This paper presents an optimization study for the grinding efficiency at Buzwagi Gold Mine. This was achieved through three full scale circuit surveys, lab work and simulations with MODSIM."

Cyanide-free technology of complex copper-lead ores flotation may be improved through enlarged range of pH values, enhanced copper recovery into copper concentrates due to additional recovery of secondary copper sulfides, as well as through enhanced efficiency of lead sulfides depression in process of new flotation modifiers-based selective separation. Study of the effects of flotation modifier (of metal nature) on minerals surface conditions proved that the xanthate is practically not adsorbed on the galenite surfaces due to minerals hydrophilization. Joint effects of sodium sulfite and modifier enhance process conditions for intensive galenite depression and at the same time for effective chalcopyrite and chalcosine flotation within a large pH values range (from pH=8 to pH=10). Identified mechanisms carry inference that proposed chemical reagent treating method is very promising for selective copper-lead concentrates separation. Potential use of carbon-containing materials as zinc flotation modifier to enhancing zinc recovery in processes of lead-zinc ores treatment has been studied. In our flotation tests we used Shalkiya (South Kazakhstan) lead-zinc ores containing such impurities as carbon shales, which presence impedes the process of saleable concentrates production and gives rise to excessive consumption of flotation agents due to the xanthate adsorption on the carbon. Lead and zinc concentrates were produced by process stages as follows: ores milled to 95% Cl. -0.074 +0; lead and zinc roughing flotation and further recleaner and testing operations. Test flotation in open process cycle resulted in enhancing zinc recovery into zinc concentrates by 21.1% and increasing zinc content in zinc concentrates by 3.96% that evidences promising potentialities for use of carbon-containing products as additional zinc flotation modifier. In recent years, coal beneficiation has gotten considerable attention. Selective oil agglomeration has been accepted as the best method to produce clean coal with a high removal of pyrite sulphur. In this study, spherical oil agglomeration of Datong coal fines was carried out using diesel oil as a bridging liquid. The oil agglomeration has a surface properties based on coal cleaning technique. The effects of fundamental parameters have been investigated including the concentration of bridging liquid, the size of coal particle, the solid content of slurry, the agitation time and rate, pH, surfactants on the agglomeration performance and various salts on the ash rejection and removal of pyrite of the agglomerated products. The optimum conditions of particle size, diesel concentration, solid content, agitation speed and time, pH and the dosage of active agent have been determined as less than 8µm, 20wt%, 1200r/min and 10 minutes, 7.5g/t and 100g/t, respectively. Under these conditions the ash content in the products can be achieved 1.5% below, the ash rejection was up to 92%. It has been observed that ionic strength of the aqueous medium affects the agglomeration performance. The precombustion coal cleaning process based on improved selective agglomeration results in high ash and pyrite sulphur removals. Over 80% removal of pyrite sulphur can be achieved from run-of-mine coals by offering a more cost-effective sulphur reduction solution rather than any other SO2 removal technology. In addition, the removal of pyrite sulphur is very necessary for not only the prevention of environmental pollution but also economical reasons.

The aim of the present paper is to review the current technologies for arsenic removal in the copper metallurgical industry, and to show the progress made with some promising emerging strategies, involving the pre-treatment of copper-arsenic concentrates by selective flotation or by alkaline leaching with Na2S-NaOH solutions. The advantages of alkaline leaching are the selective dissolution of arsenic and antimony, the high extraction yield, and the practically nil loss of copper, which remains in the clean copper concentrate as a CuS residue. Alkaline ?cured? ? a procedure similar to ?acid-cured? in conventional leaching ? improves arsenic extraction and reagent consumption, making this an interesting technology for the treatment of high As-Sb concentrates. In light of recent advances on the selective flotation of enargite and tennantite, the importance of redox conditions to control the flotation/depression of enargite-tennantite from copper sulfides has been well established. However, problems of selectivity must still be solved. Additionally, the limitation imposed in some cases by the need to recover the molybdenum by-product must be considered. The application of selective flotation to obtain a high-arsenic or ?dirty? concentrate and its sub-sequent treatment by the alkaline leaching process is suggested.

Water-sealed cyclone is a new efficient equipment to use for grading,concentrating of slurry, it was researched and developed by the Kunming Metallurgy Research Institute in the 1980s , and ac-cessed to the 1990 national invention award and the national patent products (ZL02245313.X ). The equipment and technology are innovative, firstly, we design a set of micro-pressure (0.005~0.008MPa) water-sealed device, which eliminates the gas phase of three-phase of sol-id-liquid-gas of the traditional general hydrocyclone grading process, it only has solid and liquid phases. Secondly, the axial velocity envelope surface which is a factor of controlling the accuracy of grading changes to a wedge rotation; and the interface of upward flow to down flow changes from surface to the solid, it can improve grading accuracy. Thirdly, water-sealed box and catheter devices make the stilling which pass through the cyclone cone centrifugal force fields re-enter the pressure grading zone of catheter. The three innovations make water-sealed cyclone can reduce the loss of overflow and has less mud in stilling product. Because the excellent performance, the water-sealed cyclone has application in non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, non-metallic and aluminum hydroxide industries for grading, desliming and concentrating since it has successfully developed.

Eddy current separators have become generally used in waste recycling industry during the last decade. There are many papers dealing with separation processes on eddy current separators, and also many article describes particle trajectory and different particle features affecting particle trajectory. These data are used in modeling as well. Within the frame of R&D project called ‚Fundamental research into the exploitation of the economic development potentials of critical raw materials in international co-operation - CriticEl?, authors are aimed for using Eddy Current Separator (ECS) as a mechanical separation step of high value critical elements recovery of selected WEEE’s like display panels, PCB’s. ECS, equipped with 305 mm wide belt, and a concentric magnetic rotor is used for experiments targeted development of methodology for determining separability of different particles on ECS. The subject of our work was to investigate the behavior of model particles with different shape, conductivity (aluminum and copper), orientation and size in order to separate Al and Cu according to the results of many experiments were carried out in this field. However it looks like that throwing distance of one particle is only possible to describe by a certain distribution for even the same particle within the frame of the same conditions. Sample mean and standard deviation are depending on some of the particle feature and acting forces. The paper is going to draft the first results on the relationship between distribution of throwing distance and particle properties.

Variability of the quality of phosphate ore feed to the flotation plant has been of great concern for the industry. This variability sometimes resulted in 10% to 50% decrease of P2O5 recovery, a reduction of P2O5 concentrate grade and/or both due to depression of the system. For this investigation, samples of refractory ore and easy-to-float ore were obtained from the same mining area in Central Florida; and then submitted to bench flotation tests using fatty acids (FA). To understand the cause of difference in flotation behavior of these apparently similar ores (grade, mineralogy, and physical appearance), bulk and surface characterization studies were conducted. Based on the results of characterization studies and bench flotation tests on both refractory and easy-to-float samples, it was possible to determine FA surface coverage. It was found that the surface coverage for the refractory ore was between 6.9% and 9.8%, corresponding to 0% and 80% recovery, respectively; whereas the easy-to-float ore showed surface coverage of 17.2% (89% recovery) to 24.6% (98% recovery). Since size analysis, surface area and pore size measurements showed small differences, it was thought that the surface coverage differences could be caused by the ad-sorption of natural compounds onto the phosphate ore surfaces, depressing the system. SEM, EDS, and Leaching and Solvent Extraction (LSX) studies were performed on the phosphate ores to demonstrate the proposed mechanism. This paper summarized our characterization studies, flotation results, and findings. The study showed that the new identified compounds were responsible for the flotation behaviors of the Florida refractory phosphate ores.
