The summit of L_ihi submarine volcano changed dramatically after seismic activity beneath L_ihi during the month of August 1996. Bathymetric re-surveys of the L_ihi edifice using SeaBeam, Simrad and deep-towed Reson-Focus multibeam systems showed the presence of new north-south striking fissures, normal faults and a new pit crater located at the site of a former 300-meter high volcanic cone. Comparisons between the pre-1996 SeaBeam data and the new bathymetry show a net loss of about 100 million cubic meters of rock volume on the summit. This loss is localized at a new pit crater -- the 300-meter deep by 1,300-meter wide Pele's Pit. Submersible observations with Pisces V show the northern edge of Pele's Pit to be bounded by a normal fault located north of the site of the former Pele's Vents cone that has disappeared into the new pit crater. A new hydrothermal field, the Ikaika Vents, extending from a water depth of 1,311 meters to 1,287 meters has formed at the northeastern edge of the floor of Pele's Pit. Submersible observations of these new Ikaika Vents during September 1996 showed vigorous venting at the site with extensive white-colored bacterial mats hanging off the rock face above the vents. Follow-up mapping and sampling of the vent sites during August 1997 showed vent temperatures of up to 198°C, dense populations of vent shrimps around the vents and a centimeters-thick veneer of fine-grained polymetallic sulfide mineralization along the rock walls above individual vents. The mineralogy of the sulfides shows a barite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite composition.

Recent focus by terrestrial mineral explorers (and investors) on cobalt has increasingly highlighted the future critical need for this metal, with new-age batteries being the primary utilisation. We present an overview of the world’s current terrestrial cobalt resources and put this in perspective of currently known seabed resources, particularly polymetallic nodule and crust deposits. We focus on comparison of the key exploration, development and exploitation risks for such deposits, and provide a framework for financial evaluation and appraisal.

Sediment Quality Guidelines can provide target values that should not be exceeded when seabed deposits are disturbed for mining, waste discharge or other purposes. Three sets of Guidelines have appeared in 1994 and 1995: US NOAA (updated from 1991), Environment Canada (EnvCan) and Equilibrium Partitioning (EqP) developed in the UK from US Water Quality Criteria. The US NOAA and EnvCan Guidelines have been developed by comparing many experimental and site data sets, and have concluded that levels below which effects rarely occur, or above which probably will occur, are useful guidelines. US NOAA uses the terms ERL and ERM for these two levels, and EnvCan TEL and PEL. The EqP concept is that a value can be calculated below which trace metals present cannot raise the concentration in the interstitial water. There are some problems in comparing units, but the comparison shows in general that the EnvCan levels are less than, and down to half of, the US NOAA levels. EqP levels vary but are generally fairly close to US NOAA ERL levels, with one major exception. The EqP level for mercury is far lower than either US NOAAor EnvCan levels, at 0.008 mg kg-1 compared to 0.15 (ERL) and 0.13 (TEL) mg kg-1 respectively. Comments will be solicited on how such differing Guidelines should be used site-specifically for environmental management at mining operations, (1) in the regions for where they were developed, and (2) elsewhere.

The Chavara and Manavalakurichi placer deposits have been known since a long time for their rich reserves of heavy minerals like ilmenite, rutile, monazite etc. While detailed work has been conducted on the mineralogy and texture of the bulk placer sediments, reports on the detailed investigations on individual minerals are relatively scanty. Though, limited work pertaining to the chemistry of ilmenite has been carried out by Nair et al (1995) and Ramakrishnan et al (1997), a comprehensive study of the weathering patterns of ilmenite along the longitudinal and vertical profiles has not been, so far, undertaken. Data on the microscopic analysis of ilmenite from the southwest placers, too, is sketchy. The present work deals with the variation of the weathering undergone by ilmenite in the southwest placer deposits based on chemical and mineralogical analyses.

In 1995 the Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC) of the University of Hawaii conducted a sidescan sonar survey and sampling expedition of the submarine geology and hydrothermal systems surrounding the active volcano White Island. The island is located in the Bay of Plenty, within the geothermally active Taupo Volcanic Zone off-shore of the North Island of New Zealand, and is the site of numerous shallow-water hydrothermal systems. The survey system, an EdgeTech DF1000 sonar, was a dual frequency 100 kHz & 500 kHz sonar capable of imaging the seafloor at better than 1 m resolution and possibly detecting gas bubbles within the water column. Sidescan imagery clearly shows sand channels, debris slumps, submarine landslides, and volcanic ridges all around the island to roughly 800 meters offshore. However, analyses of the both raw and processed acoustic data indicate that the sonar was not able to image any of the shallow-water hydrothermal gas seeps known to exist around the island. Vents were located using a commercial fish finder and knowledge from local tour guides and divers. Eleven gas samples from three different sites were collected by divers for analysis of chemical and isotopic composition. Rock samples were collected from thirteen underwater outcrops for correlation with existing data on subarial island flows sampled by previous investigators. Thin sections and XRF analysis were done for each rock to determine mineral assemblages along with major and trace elements, which were used to tie submarine samples to specific subarial stratigraphic layers.

The first, profitable, marine placer mining started with tin 100 years ago but no major industry developed until the mid-20th. Century. Dredging at sea yielded cassiterite in both South Thailand and Indonesia, and remains an important state-run industry in the latter country. Malaysia and Russia have also contributed production, and the coastal waters of Tasmania and England have been explored. Marine placer deposits of gold have been examined in New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Russia and West Africa. Philippino deposits were dredged during the 1930s. Fifty years later, at Nome in Alaska, gold was recovered by dredging from the offshore, and the technical/economic benefits of a seabed-deployed crawler were first demonstrated. Off the coast of Namibia placer diamonds were recovered by airlift mining during the 1960’s, but De Beers effectively started the existing marine diamond industry in 1989. The Wirth drill and a crawler continue to be used by the company, and plans recently have been announced for operations in South African waters. Other commodities such as mineral sands, platinum group minerals, and chromite have been investigated offshore in several worldwide localities.

"Seafloor cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts represent the most important yet least explored resource of ‘E-tech’ elements on the planet (Hein et al. 2003; ISA, 2008; Hein et al. 2010; Hein et al. 2013). These polymetallic deposits form a continuum from nodules rich in manganese and cobalt to crusts rich in tellurium and the heavy rare earth elements (HREE). It is this combination of traditional (base) metals and the extreme enrichment of ‘E-tech’ elements that makes seafloor ferromanganese oxide deposits particularly interesting to both science and society. Recent estimates of the global resource, based on the sparse data available, infers a dry mass of ferromanganese crusts on the seafloor of 35 x 109 tonnes (35GT). Of this, 3.7 GT is predicted in the Indian Ocean, 8 GT in the Atlantic, and 23 GT in the Pacific (Hein et al. 2013).At a global scale, the processes controlling the formation and distribution of ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts are reasonably well understood (e.g. Hein et al. 2000; Verlaan et al. 2004; Cronan 2006; Halbach et al. 1989; Usui and Someya, 1997; Hein et al. 2000; Hein et al. 2003; Hein et al. 2009; Hein et al. 2010; Hein et al. 2013; Muiños et al. 2013; Marino et al., 2016). However, much of this knowledge is drawn from sparse sampling at a regional to ocean basin scale. As a result, there remains a fundamental gap in understanding of the role of local-scale factors, such as micro-topography, ocean currents and upwelling, sedimentation rates, micro-organisms, water mass composition and biological productivity, that are considered potentially crucial to controlling the growth and composition of Fe-Mn crusts. Indeed, quantitative, particularly temporal, information relating to these processes and their relative importance in deposit formation is almost completely absent. Hence, to make any significant advance in understanding these deposits require significant new research."

Sedimento II oceanographic cruise, on board of the B/O El Puma, shows a new high anomaly or phosphate associated with shelf sediments from the south Mexican Pacific. Recently, were found two anomalies in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, that are located to the east of this new anomaly, that is related to muddy sands and rock fragment debris. The latter shows values of 17% P205. The phosphate occurrence is probably associated with red tides locations that usually are found in sites where sediments are phosphates enriched. These findings suggest that south Mexican Pacific is of potential interest for P205, in waters with high nutrients values. The possibility of a more regional occurrence of phosphate, from California to Chile is suggested.

Williamson and Associates, Inc of Seattle, Washington has recently built a remotely operated seafloor coring system for Nichiyu Giken Kogyo Ltd and the Metal Mining Agency of Japan (MMAJ). The system is designed to core to depths of 20 meters in 6,000 meters of water and will be operated from MMAJ's research vessel Hakurei-Maru No. 2 The corer uses rotary rod coring methods and will recover a core diameter of 44 mm. To facilitate coring through soft or unstable formations, the corer has the ability to set casing. The corer is fitted with thrusters for positioning during landing and telescoping legs for leveling. The system is operated through a 12 km electro-optical cable. Data displayed to the operator provides the operator with real-time feed back and control over the coring process. The operator has independent proportional control over bit weight, advance rate, rotary speed, and flushing water flow. The process of making up, breaking down and storing the drill string is automated and is controlled by a logic driven software routine. The system is currently undergoing trials in Japan. This presentation will discuss the drill's capabilities and should be of interest to those in need of a tool for assessing the thickness of marine mineral deposits.

Msjflkcisokng During the past sixteen years, GNS Science has developed a number of radiometric methods for dating massive sulfide samples from submarine arc and back-arc volcanoes. This has improved our understanding of the formation of these hydrothermal systems, the frequency and duration of their activity, and assisted marine mineral exploration companies in assessing the economic potential of these deposits that can be rich in copper, zinc and gold (up to 90 ppm Au in some chimneys). The radiometric dating methods that we employ utilize radium isotopes that are extracted from the host rocks without their parent thorium isotopes, by ascending, hot, acidic hydrothermal fluids. When the hydrothermal fluid discharges into cold seawater, chemically similar barium and radium co-precipitate as barite, a common mineral contained within the black smoker chimneys that grow upwards from the seafloor. From the onset of mineralization, the isotopes 228Ra and 226Ra (with half-lives of 5.75 yrs and 1600 yrs, respectively) begin to decay, so that the 228Ra/226Ra and 226Ra/Ba values decrease with time. Thus, samples can be dated using these ratios once the initial values, i.e., the values at the onset of mineralization, have been established, ideally from active chimneys. 228Ra decays to 228Th (half-life 1.91 yrs) and from the 228Th/228Ra values, the growth-rate of individual chimneys can be estimated. The isotope 210Pb (half-life 22.3 yrs) is occasionally used for dating the mineralization, although several samples from a chimney are needed to determine an age from the 210Pb grown from 226Ra, using the isochron technique.

The emerging marine minerals exploration and mining industry is currently focused mainly on the technical elements for its success such as developing exploration and mining technologies. However, in one sense, the technical challenges are quite soluble whereas those arising in the fields of the environment and public opinion could present this new generation of miners with problems that are far more difficult to overcome. One need only look at the issues currently faced by mining projects on land to see how powerful the new forces of so-called ?civil society? are in stopping mineral developments in many countries. From the geographic viewpoint, there are many countries but there is just one ocean, so the impacts experienced by any one operation are likely to have pervasive repercussions throughout the industry. A well-oiled NGO development protest lobby will see leverage in resisting this new industry and will seize on the single-ocean angle. The Australian Minerals Industry has established a voluntary Code for Environmental Management that provides an active and valuable model for satisfying the ?court of public opinion? and in delivering economic results to industry that are in current jargon, sustainable. An explanation of the Code for Environmental Management, and the reasons behind 44 companies representing more than 300 operations and 85% of Australia?s sizeable mineral production being signatory to it will be given. Participants see it as a means to future shareholder wealth.

Seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) can serve as a potential resource of metals such as Cu, Zn, Au and Ag. SMS rock samples from the Loki’s Castle area at the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge are comprised of sulphide bearing minerals such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, isocubanite, galena, sphalerite, whereas the gangue consists mainly of barite and silica. Sphalerite, chalcopyrite and isocubanite show complex intergrowth textures on the nano- to microscale. Various mineral processing tests were conducted in order to recover copper, zinc and silver. It was shown that sensor-based sorting can be efficiently used for preconcentration of SMS rock samples. A significant amount of waste (i.e. barite and silica) was removed in the preconcentration stage with very low losses of copper and zinc to the waste fraction. The upgraded samples were sent to the next processing stages. The results showed that the complex mineralogy of the SMS material provided challenges to conventional mineral processing methods. Hydrometallurgical processing was applied as an alternative method for extraction of metals from SMS. Leaching experiments were conducted using solutions of different lixiviants, and it was shown that leaching of SMS together with manganese nodules would facilitate efficient recovery of metals from these resources.

Operated as a single vehicle, or as part of a swarm, HUGIN’s area coverage rate is unrivalled. Equipped with a comprehensive sensor package including Kongsberg’s synthetic aperture sonar, it collects a data set. Some of these data are processed in-mission to enable operators to readily access it when the vehicle is recovered. HUGIN is well suited to mining survey and exploration. Capable of reaching 6000 metre depths and conducting missions greater than 60 hours, HUGIN collects seabed sonar imagery, sub-bottom profiles, laser and camera images plus environmental data, with sensors running concurrently.

Welina mai to the 40th Underwater Mining Institute, UMI 2011 - Marine Minerals: Recent Innovations in Technology. Since the first conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1970, the UMI Founder Professor Robby Moore always insisted on actively seeking the participation of industry, academia, and government. History has proven the wisdom of this approach, which is probably the key to its survival for so many years. The UMI is very much influenced by the cyclical pressures of the minerals commodity markets. When minerals demand and prices are rising rapidly, industrial participation in the Institute dominates the agenda, and participants share optimistic and aggressive views of the commercial prospects of the day. When metals prices are falling and world economies lethargic, academic experts continue to provide guidance and breakthroughs in the concepts and practices of exploration, technology, and environmental protection. Throughout the ups and downs, government participants provide a stabilizing force with conservative and environmentally sensitive policy statements, patient development efforts with long-term objectives, authoritative resource assessments and, sometimes, much needed regulatory clarity.

DNV GL has built up substantial experience of environmental monitoring from oil & gas projects in deep waters in the Norwegian Sea.Monitoring equipment and experiences from the oil & gas sector can to a large extent be applied to seabed mining.BackgroundThe International Seabed Authority is currently developing an environmental management strategy for the Area (ISA, 2017) as a part of the work on the regulations for exploitation for mineral resources in the Area.The draft environment strategy contains provisions related to monitoring and reporting of the activities. Deep-sea mining of polymetallic nodules are expected to produce serious impact on benthic ecosystem due to removal of nodules, sediments and associated fauna by means of collector, and subsequently, by the resettlement of sediment plume which may affect seabed biota outside mining tracks through blanketing, smothering and feeding interruption. The scale and magnitude of the exact impact of commercial operations is not known at present, but its assessment strongly required acquisition of the adequate environmental baseline information. During the past two decades, IOM carried out a total of 20 research cruises in the eastern part of Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) with purpose to obtain essential data and information on polymetallic nodules and to prepare for future development their deposits. Whilst evaluating the nodule coverage at particular station from both seafloor photographs and box-core recoveries it was ascertain that the ground-truth data plotted against the photo data indicated substantial differences between two methods. Understanding of this phenomenon has not only the methodology meaning related to the efficiency of the using photoprofiling techniques during exploration of nodules, but also it could be of environmental importance because the similarity between natural sediment blanketing occurrence in studied area and expected re-deposition and blanketing of sediments which will be disturbed during mining operations.

The United Nations Law of the Sea (LOS) Convention includes provisions (Article 76) for establishing the outer limits of a coastal State's continental shelf and for denoting the seaward extent of sovereign rights over natural resources. Determination of a coastal State's continental margin, according to Article 76, must consider eight factors: 1. The territorial sea baseline 2. The 2,500-meter isobath 3. The foot of the continental slope 4. A line 200 nautical miles seaward of the territorial sea baseline 5. A line seaward of the foot of the continental slope connecting the points where sediment thickness divided by distance to the foot of the slope equals .01 6. A line 60 nautical miles seaward of the foot of the continental slope 7. A line 100 nautical miles seaward of the 2,500-meter isobath 8. A line 350 nautical miles seaward of the territorial sea baseline Figure 1 shows the preliminary limits for each of the Article 76-based definitions for a portion of the U.S. Atlantic continental shelf. The additional areas gained beyond the 200- nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) are highlighted. The first three factors are baselines from which the distance provisions of Article 76 are measured. Factors 4-8 are distance- from-baseline provisions for establishing the continental shelf limits. Factor 5, also known as the Depth of Sediment Limit or "Irish Formula", was calculated using sediment thickness data from seismic linesand isopach maps. All other factors were determined from digital hydrographic data. The Depth of Sediment Limit is the most advantageous method for the area shown in Figure 1. It is especially useful for introverted coastlines such as the Georgia Embayment and New York Bight areas. Hydrothermal activity is well known from many locations on most mid-ocean ridges, but no hydrothermally mineralized area had yet been found at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian Ridge up to October 98 when the Japanese RV Yokosuka with the submersible Shinkai 6500 investigated this area. A massive sulfide field was discovered near 27°51S / 63°56E in the 11th segment west of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. The Free University of Berlin had joined this cruise and taken over the responsibility for the study of the respective sulfide mineralizations. Hydrothermal minerals were sampled during two dives at a water depth of 2940 m close to the summit of an axial volcanic ridge called Mount Jourdanne. Massive sulfides occur on the seafloor as small smooth mounds with an average area of about 5 m2. Their surfaces are weathered and have a reddish to brownish colour. In addition to these mound-like structures, small tube-like chimneys were observed; these chimneys rise approximately 30 to 40 cm above the floor and are less than 10 cm in diameter. No indications of hydrothermal fauna could be detected. All the hydrothermal features are spatially related to faults and smaller fissures controlled by an E-W trending graben system crossing the summit region of the submarine volcano. Such tectonized areas are generally considered to be ideal for hydrothermal activity because they may have both a magmatic heat source in the deeper underground as well as pathways for the fluid circulation.

Gregg Marine, Inc. (headquartered in Signal Hill, California) has recently introduced an innovative seafloor drill system for offshore geotechnical site investigation and seafloor mineral exploration. The system is capable of working in water depths of up to 3,000 meters and is rated to drill to a depth of approximately 150 meters below mudline. The remote operated system integrates established drilling technology with proven Schilling telemetry and controls. The flexible nature of the patented wireline drilling technology enables the use of standard sampling systems (up to PQ-size core and 3? thin-walled tubes) as well as downhole testing systems (including CPT testing, vane shear testing, downhole sensors and borehole geophysical tools). The modular nature of the seabed drill system and the accompanying launch and recovery system (LARS) enables the use of local vessels of opportunity for projects resulting in reduced project costs and improved mobilization responsiveness times.
