Although these subterranean cavities are common to the Broken Hill big lode, yet the Broken Hill Proprietary is the most prolific in their occurrence, loud they have been found of various dimensions almost from the surface down to the lowest levels yet attained in that mine. Many of these vugbs have contined valuable silver, copper and lead deposits, and some have been remarkable for the beautiful forms of crystallization pendant from the roofs and walls, and collected on the floors. The question arises, How are these caverns and fissures in the ore body formed? There are numerous theories more or less feasible, but that the causes are variant is demonstrated beyond doubt. That water in its passage leaving channels, is one ofthe chief factors for their production is assured, and their presence is likewise due to the shrinkage and dropping of the earth from varions causes, to the deposition of material forming ledges overhanging, and thus leaving spaces below, and also to chemical erosion and electrical action both of which latter are constantly at work in reconstructing, segregating and dissolving tlie mineral and metallic constituents of all ore bodies.One of the most remarkable vughs yet discovered in the big mine was that opened up about three months bitek in the' heart of the ironstone body on Block 11, and located about 40 feet below the 100 feet level of Weatherley's stopes, but now destroyed in the progress of work. Probably it was caused by chemical action, the eating out, so to speak, of a soft and soluble portion of the manganic iron, leaving a,hollow about 15 feet long, with a width and height, of say, 6 feet, carpeted with beautiful zinc with a modicum of limeincrustations, apparently produced by the percolation from around the carbonate waters holding these minerals in solution. This cavern was divided into, what might be termed, a double chamber, by big boulders of manganic iron, also coated with an aggregation of small crystals of zinc and lime although the actual proportion of the latter was not determined.

There is a strong focus in the mining industry to limit its impact on water quality and usage. This is even more evident in developing countries, where mining companies operate within local communities and have to be diligent not to affect them negatively. In mineral processing operations, the vast majority of water reclamation occurs at the tailings thickener area and tailings storage dam. It is often more effective to maximise water recovery at the tailings thickener before material transport to the tailings dam. Tailing dams are relatively inefficient, and experience a high degree of water loss due to evaporation, seepage and water retention. In addition, tailings dams present the biggest environmental liability for mineral resource projects, so it is beneficial to limit their size and loading.In the past, it was common for tailings thickener areas to have a significant footprint with several large diameter conventional thickeners, producing underflows of between 45-55% solids (w/w). At times, these multiple thickeners were difficult to operate, leading to inefficiencies in water recovery and quality. The development of High-Rate Thickeners (HRT) has resulted in improved settling properties and HRTs usually operate at significantly higher solids loadings (= 1.2 t/m2.h) when compared to conventional thickeners (= 0.1 t/m2.h). Subsequently, thickener diameters have reduced in size and HRT technology has become the preferred option for thickener circuit design in both new and existing operations. HRTs also produce higher water recoveries with increased underflow densities = 55% solids (w/w).The Carmen Copper Corporation (“Carmen Copper”) circuit upgrade is a recent example of these HRT benefits, where one, 39 m diameter, Outotec HRT treats the solids flow rate of five 76 m diameter conventional thickeners. This has allowed operations to increase dry plant tonnage by 50%, maintain key performance targets and provide a framework for further plant expansion. It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2. Asmentioned more fully later, other ore reserve situationswere known, or were met during the study, in copper,gold and nickel as well, where poor realization: expectationratios had ranged from embarrassing to disastrous.These made it clear that ore reserve estimation had to belooked at afresh.The fresh look has resulted in a broadening of theconcept of ore reserve estimation from its traditionalpurely computational basis to an approach embracingall the many things that can affect expectation andrealization as essential factors. Hence this guiderepresents a gathering together of what has been learnedand what should be known to all those concerned withore reserves in any of its diverse aspects.The study has been marked"by a number of changesof thinking. At first the aspects that appeared to requireattention were two; recognition that an ore reserve statementwas an estimate, not a precise calculation; and asearch for im improved estimation procedure adapted tolow grade ores with narrow economic margins. Threeyears later the view was that the need was to incorporateinto ore reserve estimation all relevant aspects of theproposed mining operation from choice of a samplingmethod to sales contract specifications.This study is thought to be unique in being frankabout weaknesses in ore reserve estimation and intreating failures not as natural disasters (like drought orflood, which have to be endured) but as potentiallyavoidable. It has led to three principal conclusions.

Structurally- controlled deep leaching processes have removed vast quantities of carbonate from a substantial portion of the "silica-dolomite" enclosing the 500 copper orebody. Mine drainage subsequently allowed free access of air to the porous environment created and oxidation of sulphides commenced. During the mIne development stage the exothermic and temperature-dependent nature of these hydrolysis reactions resulted in a slow general elevation of ground temperatures. and levels of 90 - lOO°C were attained in restricted moist sulphide-rich areas.With the advent of production and extensive use of explosives, the oxidation processes were locally raised to new levels of activity. Direct interaction of explosives and sulphides in favourable conditions caused temperature rises to above 260 C. Above this point the dry oxidation of sulphides in air was initiated and rapid escalation to the vicinity of 800 C has been known to occur in isolated cases.Ground reactivity is a function of the complex interrelationship of several controlling factors and no simple index exists.Control techniques are presently aimed at prevention of temperature rises in the range 100 -260 C. Inhibition of the rapid dry oxidation processes above 260 C is difllcult and current efforts have met with only partial success.

The published liquidus data on the Pb-PbS system have been correlated on the basis of one-coefficient Margules equations. Thermodynamic properties of the components of this system have been obtained, and it has also been found that the calculated miscibility gap of this system exists over a very narrow range of temperature (1041 to 1058°C).

In an earlier paper (Stanton, 1953) a brief account was given of the geological environment and structure of the Lloyd Copper Mine orebody, Burraga, N.S.W. The present paper is concerned with the chemical and mineralogical features of the ore from this mine.Investigation has been made difficult because of inaccessibility of the workings, which have been fallen in for many years. The exact positions within the orebody of the specimens described in this paper are known in only a few cases. The specimens examined are from the collections of the Mining and Australian Museums, Sydney, and from material collected by the writer from the upper parts of the mine and from various dumps about the old workings.However, no significant variations in the nature (as distinct from grade) of the ore have been mentioned in the old reports, or by Carne (1908) or Kenny (1928), so it is likely that the specimens examined are reasonably representative of the orebody as a whole.CHEMICAL CONSTITUTIONThe ore is of simple and apparently very uniform composition.It is essentially a copper ore, with minor amounts of zinc and very minor amounts of lead. Plotting of copper against zinc shows a more or less sympathetic relationship between these at least as far as 20 per cent. copper - the highest grade assayed during the present investigation. The trend of the plots indicates a Cu/Zn ratio of about 15/1 to this point. Lead is very low and extremely sporadic, showing no clear relationships with the other metals.MINERAL COMPOSITIONThe principal non-opaque minerals are quartz and sericite, and these are accompanied by smaller quantities of muscovite, calcite and biotite. As part of an investigation of the deep structure of the Waihi Basin, an extensive set of resistivity measurements was recently collected by DSIR Geology & Geophysics. The objective of this work is to map deep resistivity changes throughout the Waihi area in order to contribute to a better understanding of the regional geophysical structure. This research is also aimed at improving techniques for locating 'deposits of epithermal mineral resources, and helping to establish their origin and genetic relationship to fossil geothermal systems.   The results indicate that the basin south of Waihi is underlain by an extensive layer of low resistivity, modelled as a 5ohm-m layer several hundred metres thick. Lake sediments (mudstones), as exposed in the south western part of the basin, near Waitawheta, are the most likely source of this low resistivity layer, although hydrothermally altered clays and/or elevated temperatures are other possible causes. Strong northeast trending anisotropy is also observed, implying structural links from Waitawheta through to Golden Valley. The observed resistivity pattern is consistent with a æburied calderaÆ or æfaulted depressionÆ structural model for the basin, as inferred from gravity and magnetic data.

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

The mineral matter has been isolated from a selection of Australian bituminous coals using low temperature (radio-frequency) oxidation or hydrogen peroxidation techniques and the species present identified by x-raydiffraction. Quartz, kaolinite, and a range of mixed layer clay minerals are the dominant constituents of the coals studied, with carbonate, sulphate, and phosphate minerals abundant in some samples. The clay bands thatoccur within these coal seams contain similar mineral assemblages to the coals themselves, but the lutites that form the inter-seam strata have a markedly different mineralogy, characterized by abundant quartz andillite and a low kaolinite content.The kaolinite is thought to have formed chiefly by interaction of silica and alumina in the waters of the coal swamp, aided by the catalytic action of organic acids, while most of the other clay minerals are probablydetrital. The absence of illite from Australian coals is not fully understood, but it may reflect the action of organic acids on the detritus in the swamp, coupled with deposition in freshwater rather thanmarine conditions. Pyrite, although present in some coal samples when fresh, may undergo oxidation during storage to form a number of sulphate minerals, some of which may interact with any calcite present toform gypsum.The mineral matter assemblage in the coal determines to a great extent the fusion characteristics of the ash.Unless abundant carbonates are present, coals with kaolinite-rich assemblages have a very refractory ash, while those rich in chlorite or montmorillonite have ash fusion temperatures between 1000 and 1300°C. Theinfluence of the minerals on coal preparation and coking properties is also brieflY discussed, as well as the potential of mineral matter studies in coal seam correlation.

THE old mill erected by the .Irvinebank Company consisted of 10 heads of stamps (850 lb.), rock-breaker, Hartz jig, two Krupp tables, two Luhrig vanners, three sand-pumps, one mixer; six flotation vessels, and the necessary settlers. Power was supplied by a small colonial-type boiler, and 10-in. x 15-in Tangye engines. The ore was darted from the mines to the mill and hand-fed, into the rock-breaker, and the broken product elevated into the batter bins and fed into the stamps, the pulp from the stamps passing to a classifier, the spigot to jig, tables, and vanners, the overflow from the classifier passing to settlers. After the removal of bismuth-wolfram concentrates, the pulp was pumped to the molybdenite flotation plant and the olybdenite recovered by flotation.A commencement was made with the erection of the first unit (20 heads) of the new mill in August, 1917, and milling and concentrating commenced in February, 1919.

In formulating its strategic plan in 1998 the New Zealand Minerals Industry identified two related critical issues facing it. These are, broadly speaking, the issues of access to minerals; and the perception the public has towards the industry and its behaviour towards the environment. This presentation will report on the Industry's response to the public perception issue. The Industry has, through the NZMIA Council, and its Communication and Website Committees, developed and implemented strategies covering: communication through the print media, and through its website www.minerals.co.nz, a long-term educational outreach programme with schools, focussing on the significance of minerals, their contribution to community wellbeing and the negligible long-term environmental effects of the Industry's activities.

A.) : In congratulating Mr. Hooker upon his resume of Mr Parry's paper I have in mind the fact that he carried out the research into pipe pressures. Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. In dealing with the pulverization and treatment of auriferous ores, it may be stated that there is not one system of treatment applicable to all classes. In the southern portion of New Zealand the ores generally contain free gold, with scarcely any impurity that is, it is found in an almost pure state, without any alloy, and its dissemination amongst the matrix is generally in tolerably coarse particles. The only difficulties the mill man has to contend with, are the economical concentration of pyrites, which in some of the lodes are rich in gold, and the extraction of the gold the pyrites contain. In some of the lodes there is what may be termed float gold, that is, the particles of the precious metal are so finely divided that it passes over the quicksilver tables, and, unless there are other appliances for saving it, this class of gold is entirely lost.Indeed it is only within the last five years that any attention has been given, in the southern portion of the colony, to saving the fine gold that has passed the amalgamating tables. In the North Island the ores are very complex there are scarcely two mines, although they may be adjoining each other, where the bullion is of the same character. On every field the gold is alloyed with silver', and in combination with other metals and mineral substances, such as copper, zinc, antimony, galenfl, iron, sulphur, arsenic, etc., and, in some instaaces, cinnabar, as in the case of the Champion lode at Tui Creek, Te Aroha. Ores of this class are extremly difficult to treat satisfactorily.

Main geochemical problems concerning the environment and mining industry interrelation are connected with the transformation of natural water chemistry by mining wastes. The investigation of many mines in Primorye, the southern part of the Russian Far East, showed that their mining waters have high concentrations of heavy metals and aluminium. Water acidity is primarily connected with the amount of acid-forming sulphide minerals in ores and also depends on the neutralising capacity of rocks. Considerable quantity of metals occur in the waters in dissolved form. Metal concentrations in mining waters exceeds the natural levels by two to five orders of magnitude and can't be reduced to the background levels even after multiple dilution. It is necessary to develop and put into practice new technologies so that to reduce the geochemical impact upon the environment.

A simulation model was used to study the performance of various types of screen cloth on industrial vibrating screens. The model takes into account the effect of loading upon screen performance and predicts both themass flow rate and size distribution of the screen products.It was found that the use of the simulation model allowed the reconstruction of data for identical conditions and hence has simplified the analysis of the comparative performance of the screens. The dependence of performance upon operating conditions was found to vary markedly with screen cloth type.

A mineral grain finder is described which is easily constructed to fit onto the stage of a standard reflected light ore microscope.The device is most useful in relocating particular grains or mineral associations on 30 mm diameter polished sections. The use of the grain finder in the teaching of ore microscopy is outlined.
