THE township of Costerfield is situated in the parish of Costerfield, county of Dalhousie, and lies 6 miles east of Heathcote and 30 miles south-east of Bendigo. It is separated from Heathcote by the Mt. Ida Range, which forms the western boundary of the Silurian formation. It is situated at the head-waters of Tin-pot Creek, a small southerly tributary of the Deegay Ponds Creek, which flows east to the Goulburn River.The field was discovered in 1860 by two prospectors, Coster and Field, who were guided there by a shepherd, M Nicol Coster and Field had already discovered an antimony lode about three miles nearer Heathcote, when M Nicol offered to guide them to the larger outcrop. The main Costerfield reef at that time projected above the surface, and was white through oxidation, though the bluey sulphide showed on fracture. No alluvial gold of any consequence was obtained at Costerfield, but a little was obtained, at Redcastle, 7 miles to the north, and in some of the gullies to the east.Following its discovery there came a period of prosperity to Costerfield, while the mining operations were confined to the oxidized zone. The early success of mining at Costerfield was due to the gold values, and it is probable that the oxidized zone was secondarily enriched. The earliest available record of values is a crushing of Coster and Co. on the Antimony reef (now known as the Costerfield reef), when 200 tons from a depth of 70 ft. averaged 4 oz. per ton in July, 1861. At this time a crushing mill had not yet been erected at Costerfield, and the ore was carted and treated at Redcastle. The massive antimony ore, consisting of mixed oxides and sulphides, was separated by hand-picking as "marketable ore," and the remainder crushed for gold. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Recent exploration efforts in Eastern Interior, Alaska have discovered significant ca 72 Ma Au-Cu-Ag sulfide-amphibole skarn mineralisation within metamorphic rocks of the Yukon Tanana Terrane, 20 km SE of Tok, Alaska. Contango ORE, Inc’s 1.1 Moz Au-equivalent Peak deposit skarn discovery is hosted by an argillaceous marble layer in quartzite and micaceous quartz schist. This skarn mineralisation is both younger and much more Cu-rich than the typical ca 90 Ma Au intrusive-related gold deposits in the Tintina Gold Belt (eg Ft Knox and Pogo). Silicates at the Peak skarn are predominantly high Cl-, randomly oriented, Fe-rich amphibole, lesser chlorite and minor (<1 per cent) residual clinopyroxene (Hd80–90). Amphibole is ferroedenite to hastingsite and contains up to 4.2 wt per cent Cl-. Pb-Zn-Sb veins are most distal and cut schist wall rocks and amphibole skarn. The predominant sulfide mineral is pyrrhotite, with subordinate arsenopyrite and lesser chalcopyrite, native gold, minor pyrargyrite (Ag3SbS3), trace Jonassonite (AuBi5S4) and maldonite (Au2Bi). Native bismuth, galena, hedlyite (Bi7Te3) and Joseite-A (Bi4TeS2) are also present.Unmineralised garnet (Ad38–43) + pyroxene (Hd60–63) and pyroxene-rich (Hd76–80) skarn occurs in different fault blocks from the Peak skarn and represent proximal skarn related to different intrusive centres. Amphibolites in the region are true metabasites, display metamorphic fabrics and lack the high Fe-Cl compositions of the amphiboles in mineralised skarn. Residual clinopyroxene in the Peak skarn is rare, and most of the hornblende is coarse radial splays that shows no evidence for replacement of pyroxene. Consequently, we propose that the sulfides and hornblende were mostly direct replacements of argillaceous marble and not formed by retrograde alteration of pyroxene-rich skarn. The high-Cl amphiboles indicate that the fluids were Cl-rich and presumably carried Cu via Cl complexing, unlike the Cl-poor fluids associated with ca 90 Ma Cu-poor deposits of the region.CITATION:Illig, P and Newberry, R, 2015. Laboratory scale equipment was developed to recover zinc as oxide fume from granulated lead blast furnace slag. The cyclone furnace process is characterised by high treatment rates combined with continuous and independent operation.Results were sufficiently encouraging to warrant pilot plant scale trials being undertaken.INTRODUCTIONSince granulation of lead blast furnace slag started at Port Pirie in 1921 the stockpile of this material has increased to nearly 5 million tons which averages 17·5 per cent zinc by weight. Although a number of processes for recovering the zinc have been examined, economic considerations indicate that a slag fuming process is likely to be most suitable.In the conventional slag fuming process zinc is extracted by injecting pulverized coal and air into a molten slag bath. By maintaining a suitable air to coal ratio the oxidised zinc contained in the slag is reduced to metal. Volatilization of the zinc is followed by reoxidation in the gaseous phase with the addition of further air above the bath. The zinc oxide fume so produced is collected by normal gas cleaning methods.By examination of the thermodynamics of this process Bell, Turner, and Peters (1955) determined the zinc oxide activity of the slag over the duration of the fuming cycle.A combination of high temperature and high carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide ratio was found necessary for rapid zinc elimination.Since melting of the slag is an essential step in the slag fuming process, only two treatment methods appeared possible at Port Pirie until recently...

Project approvals are the key mechanism to balance the environmental, social and economic aspects of a project. The assessment approaches vary significantly between states, with some having a strong emphasis on social, economic and environment, while others focus primarily on the environmental issues. There are a number of approaches which proponents and governments should consider which not only deliver better project outcomes, but can save proponents time and resources in delivering the project.   These approaches are not new but are often poorly implemented. This paper considers a number of these approaches and outlines the benefits they bring.

This paper presents the near-field rock damage owing to production blasting in limestone quarry in the western region of Japan. The study's purpose is to learn the mechanism of crack development due to blast vibration. In this study, blast vibration's magnitude was expressed with peak particle velocity (PPV) which was obtained based on seismographs recorded database. In attempt to pursue a research's purpose of this study, there were two considerable interests: near-field blast vibration propagation and prediction, and crack observed and prediction. Furthermore, with regards to considerable interest of the study, there were three essential aspects which were challenged, such as: monitoring and interpretation of seismic wave propagation in a rock mass near large explosive charge of production blast scale, measurement of blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole, and determine critical value of PPV which may produce significant rock damage. In order to determine precision critical PPV, understanding correlation between rock damage with vibration level is firstly important to be done. This paper also discusses how to measure, detect and quantify near-field blast vibration and blast rock damage in adjacent to blasthole.

Over the past few years developments in heavy minerals processing have concentrated on the mineral separation portion of the business. The best example of this would include new developments in rare-earth magnetic separators and associated flowsheet modifications. Except for some minor modifications in spirals, the æwetÆ side of the separation business has lagged behind the ædryÆ side. Basic concentrator design has not changed in 20 years. Recent pilot trials by Outokumpu Technology have shown the benefits of a new gravity flowsheet that combines density separation and spiral concentration on a variety of heavy mineral deposits. This concept is already well utilised within the iron ore industry. The synergistic combination of these two technologies allows smaller, simpler, and controllable gravity concentrators to be built while providing equivalent or better grade and recoveries of valuable heavy mineral. This is contrasted to the all spiral flowsheet characterised by the diminishing returns of multiple stages of spirals and associated recirculating loads. Examples of the flowsheets and associated benefits will be presented from a variety of cases.

Many open pit mines require dewatering or need aquifer depressurisation systems to manage mine water inflow and/or mine floor stability. In many instances these mining operations impact on regional groundwater resources and therefore access to these resources by other users.As such potential exists for mine development to be hindered or even blocked by groundwater legislation that aims to prevent declining groundwater levels and demonstrate equitable use of a regional groundwater resource.There is a need to manage aquifer systems during and after the mining operations, and in some cases stresses on the aquifers and associated ecosystems may be elastic and can be managed with minimum impacts or reversed once the mine ceases to operate.This paper uses the Gippsland sedimentary basin, with a history of declining groundwater levels and mining and petroleum production, as a case study to pose the question: Should period of mining operation, aquiferÆs storage capacity and its ability to recharge be concurrently considered when granting groundwater abstraction and mining licenses for prospective mine development?It further examines that by utilising an aquiferÆs storage capacity and demonstrating an understanding of aquifer system hydrodynamics during and beyond the life of the mine (time), the approval process for groundwater abstraction and associated cost of statutory monitoring may be made less onerous.

Mineral concentrators often use process water that is very saline and/or hard. In this paper the effect of increasing concentrations of sodium chloride and calcium chloride on the rheological properties of 70 wt% quartz suspensions (d5o - 10.6 ¦m) is reported. The apparent viscosity at 100 s t in 5 mol dm -3 sodium chloride solutions (approx. 300,000 ppm) was nearly 500 times the viscosity of water without salt or particles present. Part of the increase in viscosity is caused by aggregation (coagulation) of the suspension.

THIS has been a much-neglected branch of engineering. With the majority of industries labour is the chief item of trouble and expense. Anything that will reduce trouble and increase efficiency is well worth considering. It is only of recent years that any attempt has been made on a scientific basis to improve conditions sporadic attempts having been made from time to time, privately and by law. Some have been successful, others unsuccessful not necessarily the fault of those who initiated the ideas, though naturally mistakes were made in some cases for want of experience, but those whom it was desired to benefit were not always prepared for the change, and by their distrust hampered schemes instead of assisting them.Man power is generally more expensive than machinery, though there are exceptions, such as when a small amount of work has to be done in a place where machinery does not exist, and it would not pay to instal any or where labour is cheap, and skilled workmen are scarce as in some tropical countries. When machinery is first introduced it generally causes the suspicion that it will deprive men of their work. It may cause men to vary the conditions of their work, and in some individual cases, when men are unable to conform to changed circumstances it may result in a certain amount of hardship; but, after all, the less competent must not hold back progress for the general good. A laboratory size solvent extraction apparatus has been constructed, which incorp- orates three stages of countercurrent extraction, followed by two stages of counter- current stripping. The model uses a gravity flow system from one stage to another and air lift pumps to recirculate organic and aqueous phases. A novel pump/mixer system is used to transfer solutions from the mixer compartments to the settler compartments. The model has proven valuable in the teaching of solvent extraction principles.

The Precambrian Eastern Creek Volcanics comprises spilitic basalts with interbedded sediments and tuffs which were extruded and deposited during Middle Proterozoic time. The rocks have undergone low-grade regional metamorphism.The Eastern Creek Volcanics are approximately 17,000 ft thick and have been divided into four units.The rocks were laid down in a geosynclinal basin elongate to the north. The main structural features are the northerly trending Mount Isa and Gorge Creek-Quilalar fault systems.Major east-west faults cause repetition of the sequence.Copper and uranium mineralization is known within the formation. Copper mineralization is confined to quartz-filled shears anp basalts. Nothing of economic importance has been found in the area though ore deposits have been found elsewhere in this type of environment.

With the fundamental principles of the patent laws of this and other leading countries he should of course befamiliar, but still more should he keep abreast of that practical knowledge which will enable him to act or advise wisely when the patenting of a new invention, or the sale, purchasing, or adoption of a new patented machine or process becomes amatter for consideration. As every engineer worthy of the name is an inventor and more particularly every mining engineer he has a direct interest in watching the progress of legislation and administration concerning patent monopolies.His worldly prospects may indeed, to a considerable extent, depend upon the defeat of bad patent laws and the removal of incompetent officials, or the appointment of better ones. Three stages are involved in the complete design and evaluation of an open cut mine. These are:1. design of the optimu,m ultimate pit, and selectionof the optimum mill capacity,2. development of production schedules, with intermediate pit designs, and3. evaluation of the project, based on factors from stages 1 and 2, by means of discounted cash flow analysis.Stage 1 requires relatively complete information on metal distribution, metallurgical performance, and cost factors, which is used to design a series of pits, corresponding to a range of milling rates.For each milling rate considered there is a unique pit design which maximizes operating profitability. The computer outlines this design (in terms of size, shape, and location; tons and grade of ore; and tons of waste), by considering the effect on profitability of mining each block in the mineralized inventory in relation to every other block which would be affected by its removal.The computer selects only those blocks for mining which result in an overall increase in profitability, maintaining pre-determined wall slope conditions throughout.Both operating profitabilities and capital costs increase with throughput, and the two curves will combine to produce a flat peak in net profitabilities at a certain rate, with its associated pit design.Stage 2 can maximize head grades early in the life of the operation. This increases the projected present value, but there are good arguments for maintaining steady head grades throughout the life of the mine.A modification of the programme used in Stage 1 is used here.Stage 3 is a conventional discounted cash flow analysis, using factors obtained in stages 1 and 2. It can be computerised, but a manual treatment is probably just as fast overall.

Economic conditions after WorId War II made the recovery of Australian sources of sulphur one of considerable national importance. From 1947 to 1949 an investigation was made of recirculation techniques to produce acid plant grade gas from the Dwight-Lloyd down-draught sintering plant.During 1949 it appeared feasible to produce a gas of suitable 802 concentration and a decision was made to construct a gas purification train and a 150 tons/day contact acid plant. However, a number of difficulties remained in the production of the gases for sulphuric acid manufacture and as a result of research conducted to overcome these troubles the continuous up-draught sintering process was developed.The principal difficulties were:(a:) The down-draught sintering practice, as developed, produced an unusually high metallic lead precipitation in the windboxes. The famous Golden Mile of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia was, between 1888 and 19ft, one of the richest and most important gold camps in the world. Annual production, which reached a peak of nearly 1,300,000 oz. in 1903, however dropped to below 400,000 oz. after 1920.Depression seized the camp, and many mines closed down. The output from this old field is now steadily mounting under the stimulus. of a higher price for gold. In 1935 300,000 oz. of precious metal were recovered and the future is bright. Total production from the field is 21,400,000 oz., whereas something like £23,600,000 have been paid in dividends.The Golden Mile has been studied by many geologists. The Kisladag Mine, Turkey, is a large porphyry gold deposit which is mined by open pit methods. In operation for over ten years, Kisladag provides an excellent example of how attention to a geologic feature, namely hydrothermal alteration, became a very effective predictive geological tool for planning and operation. The alteration domains were initially used as a geological tool to assist with establishment of resource model domains and to guide delineation drilling, but they were soon recognised to be correlative to geotechnical characteristics (affecting pit slope angles) and metallurgical performance (heap leach recoveries). Recent developments in spectral processing allow the systematic quantification of complex overlapping alteration phases and have greatly improved the ability to rapidly define internally consistent alteration domains for geotechnical and geometallurgical purposes.Alteration at Kisladag comprises a central core potassic (K-feldspar-biotite) zone, a tourmaline-white mica enveloping zone, an advanced argillic lithocap on the deposit’s eastern side and an overprinting pervasive argillic zone. These alteration zones and their distribution were based initially on strictly qualitative, visual mineralogical logging of diamond drill core. With the need for more accurate and consistent identification of the alteration mineral suites, particularly the phyllosilicate phases, logging was augmented by systematic measurement of spectral data using a Terraspec instrument.Recently the Kisladag spectral database (over 85 000 readings) was reprocessed by the newly developed methodology (aiSIRIS™) that allows relative quantification of the spectrally-responsive minerals. Visualising this transformed spectral mineralogy at various mineral concentration thresholds using implicit modelling software (Leapfrog®) led to the creation of consistent mineralogical and alteration domains that are used for the definition of geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters. The effectiveness of shear-flocculation as a method for upgrading simple mixtures of ultrafine (1-11 \lm) scheelite and garnet was evaluated. Statistical methods were used in the design and analysis of the main test program.The stirrer speed, stirring time, and initial weight ratio were all found to have significant effects on both the recovery and grade of the floes produced. The particle sizes also had an effect on the final grade. There were several important interactions between factors which also affected the results. Optimum conditions for shear-flocculation were established, and under these conditions about 80 per cent of the scheelite could be recovered at a grade which depended on the composition of the starting mixture. Starting with mixtures containing 10 and 50 per cent scheelite, the best final grades were between 20 and 50 per cent and between 70 and 90 per cent respectively, the actual value depending on the particular combination of particle sizes.

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. Recent developments in diamond drilling practice have been chiefly 'concerned with modifications in drill design and 'operating technique whereby an increase in daily footage rates and reduced footage costs have been achieved without any marked improvements in the recovery of core. This trend is perhaps due to the general acceptance by the mining and drilling engineer alike of the belief that diamond drilling has definite limitations in exploratory work on mineral deposits characterized by irregularities in continuity and grade, such a belief arising from the fact that drilling technique has not yet evolved coring devices to ensure the full recovery of the rock and mineral formations penetrated.Current diamond drilling operations at Moonta and Wallaroo Mines, carried out by the South Australian Department of Mines, have attained remarkable results in completely eliminating core-loss by the use of a special double-tube core barreI.It is considered that assays of borehole samples taken with this special barrel have a reliability comparable, if not superior to that of similarly situated mine samples and, provided they are spaced satisfactorily, can be used as, a basis for calculating tonnage and grade. Formerly, with only partial core-recoveries, positive borehole results on narrow irregular lodes, such as those in the Moonta and Wallaroo Mines, could be accepted mainly as indications of the presence of mineralization, and could have only a limited bearing on estimates of ore reserves.The value of this special double-tube core-barrel lies In the fact that it guarantees good core recovery and, therefore, good samples, and eliminates the need for sludge-sampling, which is prone to give unreliable assay results from several causes, such as gravity concentration in the bottom of the hole and return water losses which cannot be overcome.In view of the increasing demand for minerals and the probability that the search for them will be carried on largely by boring, it is felt that it would be of interest and value to direct the attention of mining engineers to core-recovery results obtained by diamond drilling plants in South Australia and the features of the special core-barrel, designed by the writer, which has made this possible. Also, the writer is desirous of placing on record two other core-recovery devices designed to extract accurate samples in relatively soft or unconsolidated formations. The latter are used with percussion and calyx plants, respectively and their value has been proven on phosphate rock and coal deposits in South Australia.
