The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. In this paper the effect of humic substances (natural surfactants), electrolytes and solid particles on bubble coalescence, and as a consequence on froth stability, have been investigated. In this study two bubbles of equal size were formed and forced to collide using a novel experimental apparatus. The interactions were recorded by a high-speed camera, the images of which helped to determine the coalescence frequency and the coalescence time, as well as the mechanisms of the interactions. Two types of humic substances were used, along with three different electrolytes. Humic substances appeared to have a considerable effect on bubble coalescence, while the effect of electrolytes was minimal. Moderate and high hydrophobic glass spheres were used between two bubbles. Very hydrophobic spheres promoted fast bubble coalescence, while moderate hydrophobic spheres had no effect. Data of coalescence frequency and time is presented, as well as images of the coalescence events. The coalescence frequency was used to validate a parameter, Pf, known as the film failure frequency, used in a simulation model to predict foam height in a gas-sparged vessel. Predictions determined using Pf were then validated by experimentation.

Based on the cubic law, the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities has the most significant effect on the hydraulic conductivity of jointed rocks. The hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities is a stress-dependant parameter and reduces with increasing applied stress. Furthermore, the rock stress increases with increasing depth. Therefore, hydraulic aperture is a depth-dependant parameter. In this paper, new empirical equations are introduced to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities at different depths. These equations were developed on the basis of back analysis of compiled packer tests from different actual cases. They provide the capability to calculate range of variation and average hydraulic aperture when the orientation of discontinuity and field stress tensor are given. Furthermore, it is possible to calculate the hydraulic aperture of rock discontinuities when its value is given for another depth. A hydraulic aperture of 7.7?µm was calculated by this method, comparing well with a reported site value of 8.3?µm for rock discontinuities at the Stripa mine project at a depth of 385?m. The Morning Star Gold Mine presents an example of a prolific operation with considerable historical records, mine workings, drill hole logs and countless plans from greater than 20 adjacent mines which have now been consolidated to form the current project. Implementation of 3D computer modelling in the planning stages has provided an additional tool to integrate and refine geological models as a guide to some exploration strategies. It has allowed for a re- interpretation of the host rock units, dimensional constraints, new exploration extensions and provisional resource modelling. The initial consideration of this project was to integrate 135 years of mining history into a single database. Each historic mining area had an unrelated mine grid, often established parallel to the long axis of their main stopes; some were based on magnetic or true north. Survey plans were in chain, imperial or metric units. Through the manipulation and rotation of old grids, previously unrelated mine workings began to form continuous mineralised zones, with unmined portions still remaining in between the existing development. Furthermore the current drillhole database of >433 holes showed numerous confirmatory intersections of new mineralisation. A series of tiered tables were created within a relational database to derive guidelines for assessing data to attribute a Mineral Prospectivity Value [MPV] based on key indicators of mineralisation. Indicator logging now forms the basis of geological descriptions.

During the period 1981 - 1991, Esso Australia and their Joint Venture partners have discovered about 180 MB of liquids (crude and condensate), 60 MB natural gas liquids and 800 - 1000 GCF of gas. A total of 48 wildcat wells were drilled including 12 new pool discoveries drilled from platform facilities. Significant discoveries include the West Tuna, Kipper, Blackback and Terakihi fields. These four discoveries, contribute to 75 per cent of the total reserves discovered in the last decade and were all high-risk plays. The Kipper discovery, in the pre-Latrobe Golden Beach Group top sealed by volcanics, and the Blackback-Terakihi discoveries, located on the present day continental slope in water depths ranging from 300-700 metres are both the result of successful drilling outside the traditional exploration bounds for the basin. During the last decade, Esso and its partners have spent about A$400M on wildcat exploration activity. The exploration success rate, excluding platform based drilling, has been 50 per cent for wildcat wells. On a technical front, the last decade has heralded substantial improvements in seismic data quality. Peak frequency content in seismic data at the Latrobe Group target levels is now double that of the early 1980s. Significant advances have also been made in our understanding of sequence stratigraphy, geochemistry and geohistory of the basin.

The Kunwarara magnesite deposit is the largest known magnesite (MgCO3) deposit in Australia. It is located under black soil plains to the north of Rockhampton in Queensland. The deposit consists of magnesite nodules set in a fine-grained sandstone, siltstone and mudstone matrix. The magnesite is derived from weathering of serpentinite in adjacent hills and transport of magnesium in solution to a Tertiary/Quaternary river system. The magnesium has come out of solution in the active river system, and combined with atmospheric and biogenic CO2 to form magnesite nodules. The magnesite can be very pure with certain varieties up to 98 per cent MgO (LOI free). The deposit has been mined since 1991 and processed into magnesia (MgO) which is sold into refractory, agricultural and other markets. The geologist is an integral part of the small mine technical team. The role of the geologist includes characterisation of the ore through drilling and bulk sampling, supervision of geological aspects of mining and assistance in the optimisation of ore processing.

Sampling is often the most critical part in process analysis. When the mean of a continuous lot, such as a process stream within a given time interval, is estimated by calculating the mean of several samples, the uncertainty of the estimated mean depends usually on the sampling strategy. Three different strategies can be used: systematic, stratified or random sample selection. The standard deviation of the lot mean is different for these methods so that systematic sampling usually gives the smallest and random sampling the largest standard deviation. Pierre Gy developed a method where the sampling errors of one-dimensional lots for these three strategies can be estimated from a variogram, which is calculated from a variographic experiment, ie from a set of one-dimensional time series measurements with fixed sampling interval. While variogram is an excellent tool for characterising and displaying the variability of autocorrelated processes as function of time, the sampling error estimation from it is quite laborious, however. In this work an alternative method for estimating the sampling errors was developed. The process is divided into strata of equal sizes, varying the length of strata similarly to variographic analysis. For stratified sampling the standard deviation estimates are obtained by analysis of variance and for systematic sampling by fitting a linear regression line to each stratum and calculating the residual variances. By pooling the individual variance estimates the variance estimates that are corrected for autocorrelation are obtained. The new method was tested with simulated and real data sets having periodic, random and/or drift fluctuations. For stationary processes the results agreed well with the results of the GyÆs variographic method. The method can probably be generalised to estimate the sampling variance of higher-dimensional lots.

The issue of flyrock is very important in the operation of all mineral extraction sites that use blasting. Unlike the other environmental effects of blasting, ground vibrations and air overpressure, flyrock is (or should be) a rare event, with severe consequences which may include damage to property, injury or fatalities. These physical consequences are often matched by a loss in public confidence in the management of the operation, mistrust and bad press. In this work a deterministic analysis of flyrock was carried out using the equations of a particle in motion with drag. The solutions to these equations were used to reproduce the curves of Lundborg et al (1975) for the relationship between flyrock boulder size and maximum ejection distance. A probabilistic approach based on Monte Carlo simulation was built up with the analytical model using published data together with local case study material. A typical quarry blast situation was modelled and estimates of safe standoff distances were determined using risk assessment techniques.

The rediscovery and recognition of the magnetite potential of the iron mineralisation at the Hawsons Project area 60 km south of Broken Hill has the potential for the development of a new series of magnetite iron-ore operations across the Braemar Iron Formation in New South Wales and South Australia. Despite the low-grade of 16 per cent magnetite, the Hawsons project feasibility studies are indicating a positive business case for a large-scale 20 Mt/a of magnetite project for the following reasons:• The mineralisation is on a huge scale, with a major potential for increases beyond the already very large established resource of 1.4 Bt.• The mineralisation is particularly soft for crushing and grinding, with a Bond work index of 6.3 and an overall comminution power requirement of 6.7 kWh/t of ore. This equates to 39 kWh/t of concentrate which is significantly less than for similar projects.• The mineralisation fractures easily, preferentially along grain boundaries.• Location is close to mining infrastructure and a skilled workforce at Broken Hill, 60 km to the northeast.• It is close to road and rail infrastructure for access to the resource.• A high-grade, clean magnetic concentrate can be produced, with the only contaminant being silica.The deposit is a sedimentary siltstone which is considerably different to other known magnetite deposits. This caused significant differences in Davis Tube Recovery (DTR) results between laboratories so that the softness of the ore has required a close focus on, and changes to the laboratory procedures. A DTR procedure has been developed to provide consistent results across the deposit.Crushing and grinding test work has established a clear advantage in the use of the high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) crushing and grinding circuit for this particular ore. The power required for comminution using the HPGR crushing circuit is about half the power required for the Autogenous milling circuit.Therefore, despite the low magnetite grades, the Braemar Iron Formation in New South Wales and South Australia has the potential be a new magnetite iron ore province.

In 1991 the uranium spot market price dropped to approximately US$7/Ib U308, a historical low in real terms and the short-term outlook for the industry in the next five years was grim. At this time the Ranger operation was producing uranium concentrate at its design capacity of approximately 3 000 tonnes/year. The loss of two major long-term contracts owing to price and reduced power utility demand due to excess inventories meant that the company could not match production to sales. Continuance at this production level would have resulted in a rapid buildup of product inventory and the tie-up of significant cash reserves. After analysing various options, an innovative operating strategy was devised such that production and sales were approximately balanced without a significant impact on the unit production cost or a long term effect on the plant or operation. A campaign mining/milling operation commenced and approximately 40 per cent of the workforce were retrenched. Multi-skilling of all employees was a critical aspect of ensuring a successful outcome. This paper examines the strategy and reports on the success of the operation two years after the restructuring exercise was effected in November 1991.

Production scheduling optimisation in open pit gold mining is a complex problem as it is driven by economic criteria reflecting particular economic interests of the concerned parties in the mining business. The contemporary organisational forms of mining, such as owner-operator and contract mining, are a good example of this relationship. These forms are complex and contradictory by nature as the contractor aims to get more waste at the beginning of mine exploitation in order to make more profit with favourable discounting effect over time, while the owner-operator aims to mine less waste at the beginning, which is a precondition for implementation of the mine planning principle of waste deferment and maximising the net present value (NPV) by accounting for the time value of money. Both forms are vital for the successful performance of the Australian mining industry as their competition is a powerful driving force of the market-oriented national economy.The present paper offers a new vision about the economic effectiveness of contract and owner-operator forms in surface gold mining through the prism of a novel production scheduling approach with a multistage stabilisation of the mining rate that implements the mine-to-market concept of modelling. The comparison of the forms is demonstrated with a case study that reveals the specific features of the new scheduling approach and the benefits of its implementation in the exploitation of Australian gold resources.CITATION:Halatchev, R, 2013. With the recent rapid development of Chinese steel industry, the world iron ore resources of good quality are depleting rapidly. As a result, iron ore deposits of lower quality have been or are being developed to meet the market demand and are becoming increasingly important to iron and steel companies. As concentrates have advantages of high Fe grade and less harmful impurities, they are ideal sweeteners to maintain sinter grade and quality when high proportions of low-grade ores are used in the sinter blends. However, due to their fine nature, addition of concentrates will inevitably increase the proportion of adhering fines and reduced the proportion of nucleus particles of the sinter blends, which can adversely affect the green bed permeability and sintering productivity. In the present study, lab scale sintering tests were carried out under the conditions similar to the sintering process to examine the effect of concentrates on the high temperature sintering characteristics of sinter blends and the structure and strength of the resultant sinter analogues.

The Silver Swan nickel mine is located at the Black Swan Nickel Project, 53 kin north east of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. The Silver Swan orebody is a massive sulphide nickel deposit dipping 70¦ east with an average in situ grade of 14 per cent. Mining of the massive orebody is by Mechanised Ramp Cut and Fill (MRCF). A mining recovery of 98 per cent and minimising dilution are primary goals in extracting the high-grade ore. Placing a distinguishable marker bed (working platform) on rock fill was identified as a key method to achieving these goals. Gravel from a pit located onsite was considered the most suitable material for the marker beds. Research undertaken to design the marker beds using the gravel revealed conventional methods used in mining would not suffice, but that road stabilisation methods could be a viable alternative. Trials used a road recycler to mix cement and gravel in situ and several test beds were constructed on the surface to determine the final design. The trials attempted to replicate a marker bed's life cycle of construction and placement and mucking of ore from the marker bed.

The mineralogy of new certified-reference-materials (CRM) for X-ray fluorescence from Western Australia (ASCRM 030 to 035) was analysed by X-ray diffraction using the BRUKER energy dispersive one-dimensional detector LYNXEYE-XE. The samples were studied using standard-less quantitative phase analysis, based on the Rietveld method. This method delivers the relative amount of crystalline phases. All materials were found to be high-grade iron ore predominantly consisting of hematite and goethite and very low amounts of magnetite. In addition, the gangue mineralogy was characterised. It consists of low-per cent amounts of carbonate (siderite/calcite), quartz, kaolinite, chlorite and gibbsite.Furthermore, all samples were analysed with the external standard method. This is an elegant way to probe for amorphous content without adding an internal standard. All six samples were found to contain up to 16 per cent amorphous or nano-crystalline material.CITATION:Knorr, K and Birch, S, 2013. Studies by Tennent, Isokangas Pty Ltd (TIP) have indicated that underground quarrying of backfill may be a cost competitive option for providing backfill for specialised situations in underground mining. Situations where suitable bulk fill material may not be available on the surface, and where the total cost of setting up a fill distribution system are prohibitive, could favour the mining of fill material underground adjacent to the stopes being mined. Considerations include environmental impact, scheduling, surface constraints and total costs. The examples quoted in this paper, and the case studies are based on the authorsÆ personal observations and experience.

MIM Holdings Limited (MIM) committed to a long-term future in copper in the Carpentaria Mineral Province in 1996 with the development of the Enterprise and Ernest Henry mines, and an upgrade of MIMsÆ copper smelter in Mount Isa, and copper refinery in Townsville. The upgrade of the copper smelter will enable the smelter to produce 250 000 tpa of copper with a single primary smelting unit, the copper Isasmelt furnace installed in 1992. The copper Isasmelt furnace currently smelts concentrate containing 145 000 tpa copper. To reduce the risk associated with the copper smelter upgrade, and shorten the ramp up time of the upgraded smelter, two high-rate trials were undertaken in 1997 to demonstrate that the copper Isasmelt furnace could, with an additional 525 tpd of tonnage oxygen, treat concentrates containing 250 000 tpa copper. During the trials the concentrate feed rate to the Isasmelt furnace was increased from its average rate of 100 tph of concentrate to 150 tph of concentrate. The increase in the capacity of the furnace was achieved by: supplementing the installed tonnage oxygen capacity of 595 tpd with an additional 300 tpd supply; reducing variability in the furnace feed rate from ¦25 per cent to less than ¦5 per cent; and reducing tramp air. The Isasmelt furnace smelted concentrate at a rate of 140 to 150 tph for four hours 25 minutes during Trial 1, and at a rate of 150 tph of concentrate for five hours and 30 minutes during Trial 2. The oxygen utilisation was 100 per cent during the trials with the process remaining under control. As a result of the development work for the trials the average treatment rate of the furnace under normal conditions increased by ten per cent.

Uncertainty and debate currently pervade the mining industry in New Zealand. The operational uncertainties, whether external (eg gold prices, the exchange rate), or internal (eg coal expansion difficulties), are large. In addition, many wider factors which influence mining are in a state of flux. State Coal Mines, the operating branch of the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy I may be made a state corporation, with the remaining Mines Division functions being revamped. The agencies administering environmental legislation are to be restructured. Mining legislation amendments have been proposed and then dropped, and the area is now to be reviewed (The Press, 31 July 1985). Some mining licences have been withdrawn, and become the subject of heated debate in the community (The Press, 19 July 1985, and subsequent letters to the editor).

In 1984/85 financial year Australia produced 529 thousand barrels per day (kbd) of crude oil. By far the major contribution (453 kbd) was light waxy oil from offshore Gippsland, Victoria. When these discoveries were made in the latter 1960s, imported oil was available in abundant supply and at low prices. Because of this, the Gippsland producers persuaded Government to control the marketing and pricing of their crude, and thus provide the required security of offtake. Political events in the middle East created supply shortages during the 1970s, and dragged up government selling prices for OPEC crude oil. Thus Arab Light crude that sold for less than US$2/barrel (bl) in 1970 reached $34/bl in 1981. Following the consequent decline in world oil demand, in 1982, Australian refiners sought to evade their obligation to lift Gippsland crude. Hence, in 1983, the Government was forced to introduce a floor quota of 385 kbd of Gippsland crude liftings and to allow producers to export any additional production refiners did not require. On expiry of the old arrangements, Government introduced a partial free market from January 1985, whereby the balance in excess of 350 kbd may be sold to Australian refiners at negotiated prices, or exported as before. In 1984/85 exports were some 90 kbd and will be higher in the current year. About half this total has been exported by BHP, providing valuable experience and lessons which are described in the paper.

Exploration for coal has been on-going in South Australia for the past 100 years. During this period substantial resources of low rank coal have been delineated throughout the State. These deposits are of variable quality often with high moisture, sodium, chlorine, sulphur and ash content and although generally regarded as suitable for use in conventional pulverised fuel boilers, many are difficult to utilise. The only operating coal mine in South Australia is at Leigh Creek where coal bearing shale was discovered by chance in 1888 during excavation of a railway dam near the township of Copley. Leigh Creek has had a very diverse mining history from the initial small scale underground mining through to open-cut mining utilising draglines and more recently large shovels and trucks.

Almost all the countries of the south-west Pacific and the Australian states have recently completed or have commissioned mineral royalty reviews. The prime reasons for this widespread and consistent action is the desire of the governments of these entities to redress perceived effi- ciency and equity imbalances and to ensure that the revenue raising motive does not override the necessity to maintain mineral exploration and development incentives. Governments are tending to adopt royalty systems comprising a com- bination of base royalty and a profit component. Resource rent royalty and royalty holidays have been introduced and anomalies, such as royalty free gold production, still exist but appear to have uncertain futures. Tasmania ranks as the Australian state with the lowest aggregate royalty levy/production value ratio whilst Papua New Guinea has the highest royalty objective achievement level in the south-west Pacific region.
