Tkermodynamic functions for dilute solutions of uranium in liquid cadmium were obtained from galvanic cell measurements. Deviations from Henvy's law were observed at concentvations down to 2 x 10-3 atom fraction. Unusually large negative values of the pavtial molal relative enthalpy and excess entvopy of uranium, suggestive of the occu,vvenctwe of partial ovdering of cadmium around uranium in these solutions, were found. The negative relative partial molal enthalpy of uranium at the liquidus accounts for the observed retrogvade solubility of metallic uranium between 473" and about 630°C. The standard free enevgy of formation of UCd,, from a-uranium and liquid cadmium is given by F,° THE constitutional diagram of the U-Cd system,' Fig. 1, is unusual in several respects. The near equality of the Goldschmidt atomic radii2 (Cd, 1.52A U, 1.56A) might be expected to give rise to extensive mutual solubility of the elements except for the restrictions imposed by differences in valence and electronegativity.3 The latter factors must be strongly influential because mutual solubilities in the terminal solid phases are probably negligible, and the solubility of uranium in liquid cadmium in the readily accessible range is only about 1 at. pct. Interestingly, the solubility of uranium in liquid cadmium actually decveases slightly with increasing temperature from 473" to about 630°C. Such a retrograde solubility in a liquid phase is a rare phenomenon in metallic systems; no other authenticated examples were found among the nearly 700 binary phase diagrams compiled by Hansen and Anderko.2 These observations suggested the existence of some unusual interaction between uranium and cadmium. Greater insight into the nature of this interaction was sought by measurement of the thermodynamic properties of the system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The emf of cells denoted by the scheme was measured. Each cell consisted of two uranium and two alloy electrodes immersed in a molten lithium chloride-potassium chloride eutectic mixture containing uranium trichloride. The physical arrangement is shown in Fig. 2. The potential between any pair of electrodes could be measured with a Leeds and Northrup Type K-3 potentiometer. The measurements were made at points marked in Fig. 1. It should be noted that points on the phase boundaries represent the concentrations of uranium in the saturated liquid phases of heterogeneous alloys. Uranium Electrodes. Uranium, which is not a particularly soft metal, is capable of retaining residual stresses, and its potential may depend upon its physical condition. Tantalum metal has a number of unique properties which give it widespread application in modern technology and in research. In electronic apparatus involwing high temperatures in vacuo some of the refractory metals 6ecome brittle. Tantalum retains its ductility at elevated temperatures, and this property, together with its low vapor pressure and its ability to absorb gases, make it important in this field. Its chemical inertness in the presence of acids, halogens, and other corrosive media, makes it useful in chemical apparatus and in neuro and orthopedic surgical applications. As an addition to tungsten carbide in steel-cutting grades of cemented-carbide tools, the carbides of tantalum and of its sister element colum-bium have found considerable use. The present-day method1 of manufacturing tantalum is to sinter a powder compact of the metal in vacuo. Because tantalum-columbium alloys are difficult to work and since tantalum ores almost always contain columbium, the two metals must be separated chemically, the products of the separation being generally in the form of potassium tantalum fluoride and potassium columbium oxyfluoride. These salts are used in fused-salt electrolytic baths from which coarse metallic powder is deposited as a sponge at the cathode. Finer powder can be made from the coarse product or from tantalum scrap by first submitting it to an embrittling heat treatment in hydrogen and then crushing it. The fine hydrogen-containing powder may subsequently be degassed in vacuo at a high temperature. Prompted by the success of others2,3 in the magnesium reduction of titanium and zirconium halides; one of the authors undertook4 an investigation of the thermochemistry of the reaction between solid magnesium and gaseous tantalum penta-chloride, a subject which had not previously been studied. He found that the heat of formation of tantalum pentachloride is approximately 364,250 cal per mol at temperatures lower than the melting point of magnesium. A value of 83 units was found for the standard entropy at these temperatures. With these values, it was shown that magnesium and tantalum pentachloride are capable of reacting exo-thermically at temperatures less than the melting point of magnesium, and that no great violence is to be expected when these substances are heated together. The exothermic nature of the reaction indicated that the Drocess should be efficient and should not require much externally applied energy. Tantalum pentachloride is not commonly made commercially, and any process using it therefore involves the subsidiary problem of producing and handling this substance. DEFINITIONS The ores of iron are classified in three general categories: direct shipping, concentrates, and agglomerated-i.e., pelletized or sintered. Direct Shipping As the name implies, direct-shipping ores are shipped as mined or, perhaps, after screening. Generally, direct-shipping ores are hematitic (R203), magnetitic (R304), or limonitic (2Fe2O3.3H20) in nature. Grades of direct-shipping ores vary widely. Prices are frequently related to the historical Mesabi standard of 51.5% iron, although certain premium lump ores may contain up to 68% iron. The use of direct-shipping ores is diminishing as the advantages of beneficiated ores become evident and reserves are depleted. Concentrates Where the nature of the deposit and economics allows, certain ores are upgraded. This may include no more than washing and screening, or may be as elaborate as fine grinding followed by magnetic, gravity, or even flotation procedures for separation. Coarser concentrates may be smelted "as is.'; Fine concentrates usually are sold as sinter feed. (Sinter, as used here and in the following, refers to a process by which a fine ore-carbon mixture is agglomerated at elevated temperatures on a direct-fired moving grate to eliminate fines and improve chemical and physical homogeneity.) Agglomerates-Pellets or Sinter The development of economic techniques of mining and concentrating taconite (fine-grained, ferruginous jasperoids) led to the introduction of the iron-ore pellet, which is now becoming the major form in which iron is introduced into the furnace. The tremendous reserves of magnetic taconites of the northern United States and Canadian Precambrian shield had been recognized for many years. A century of mining has seen the reserves of the direct-shipping or "red ores" of the Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin ranges approach depletion. Research started in the 1930s has seen the evolution of motives and techniques to concentrate these stubborn refractory ores. The efficacy of concentrate pellets in iron-making has been such as to induce mines throughout the world to grind, concentrate, and pelletize otherwise shipping-grade ores. Table 14.1A.1 shows typical analyses of iron ore. Marketing-Prices of iron may be quoted on a value per long-ton (2240 lbs) or metric-ton (1000 kg or 2204 lb) basis, or on a value per long-ton-unit or metric-ton-unit basis. Polonis,and R Taggart (Uuivevsity of Washington)—Dispersion hardening in titanium-copper alloys is of particular interest to us in view of our current research activities in phase transformations in this system. We should like to raise questions concerning several points in the paper. The flow sheet for fabrication and heat treatment (Authors' Fig. 2) indicates that 0.045 in sheet is treated in air for a period of 30 min at 1625' F. Were any surface coatings used to reduce oxygen contamination at this stage? One might ask the same question about the 8-hr annealing at 1400F. Contamination during fabrication and heat treatment of such thin sections could be considerable without some protection. Although the authors state that no analyses were made, they note that contamination masks the distinction between base strengths of the different alloys. In this connection, what fabrication and heat-treatment procedures were used in obtaining the comparison specimens of unalloyed titanium? It would seem that oxygen contamination must cast doubt on the reliability of the proposed strength-mean free path relationship deduced from the data (Authors' Fig. 5). It is usual to evaluate dispersion hardening on the basis of yield strength rather than ultimate tensile strength, and accordingly we have replotted the authors' Fig. 1 to include yield strength. The yield strength data do not justify a discontinuity of 3 p at either 70" or 1000 OF. Can the authors substantiate their conclusion 1) with additional evidence? Otherwise it seems that they have succeeded only in pointing out the possibility of a linear relationship between yield strength (or Uts) and the logarithm of the nleall free path, comparable with that demonstrated for iron-carbon alloys (Authors' Ref. 2). Work in our own laboratories has shown that the hardness of the phase Ti,Cu is 235 Vpn, and that of a 1.5 pct (at.) (2 pct wt) supersaturated solid solution of copper in titanium is 190 Vpn. This small difference in hardness would suggest that Ti2Cu should not be a very effective dispersion-hardening phase. D. N. Williams, R. W. Wood, H. R Ogden, RI. IN the production of alloys by powder metallurgical processes it is often necessary or desirable to include one or more components that tend to form very stable oxides. Included in this group of metals are aluminum, manganese, magnesium, silicon, and a few others. In many cases it is not necessary for the sintered compact to have full density and the other physical characteristics of a cast alloy and in that event no undue precautions need be taken. If, however, it is required that the sintered part be entirely homogeneous, and have maximum density and physical properties, some method must be found to reduce the surface films of oxide, which are always present on the metals, and for the metals mentioned above this is always extremely difficult, if not impossible. Since the production of high-density alloys is of particular interest to powder metallurgists, some experiments were undertaken to devise methods of reducing the refractory oxides. For this work, alloys of iron, nickel, and aluminum were chosen because aluminum oxide is one of the most stable oxides and because these alloys in the right compositions form excellent permanent magnets. All of the pertinent properties of the magnets could be accurately and delicately measured by density measurements and magnetic tests of sufficient scope to give a complete demagnetization curve. From such a curve the maximum coercive force, residual magnetism, and energy products could be obtained and compared with the same properties for a cast material. Any lack of homogeneity, density, or solid diffusion would be immediately apparent as a decrease in the magnetic properties. NATURE AND REMOVAL OF SURFACE BARRIERS The early work of the present investigation was based upon published processes.* In the published information it was claimed that by intimately mixing iron, nickel, and iron-aluminum alloy (50 per cent Fe, 50 per cent Al) powders, compressing such a mixture into the desired shape and size, and then sintering (heating to a temperature below the melting point of the component metals) in hydrogen at 1200°C. or higher, a sound, homogeneous article could be made having the desired physical size, shape, and strength, and good magnetic characteristics. However, this early work showed clearly that something in the powder compress was inhibiting diffusion and the process was almost entirely unworkable. In the initial phase of the investigation samples of iron powder, nickel powder, and iron-aluminum alloy powder were pressed into separate bars and sintered in hydrogen. BUT little was known of the coals of Southeastern Ohio until the present survey of the State under Dr. Newberry began its work. The results of the geological investigations of Prof. E. B. Andrews in this region, and of the chemical investigations of Prof. T. G. Wormley, both of which appear in the reports of the survey for 1869 and 1874, and more recent special reports by the former, together with some data for which I am indebted to the kindness of Dr. Newberry, and my own limited observations, have served me for the preparation of the following notice of the coals lying on the western border of the great Appalachian coal-basin in the region drained by the Hocking River and its tributaries, and belonging to the Lower Coal-Measures. Some uncertainty exists as to the place in the succession of the lower coals to be assigned to the seams known and mined in the Hocking Valley. It is the opinion of Prof. Andrews that the inequalities of the original surface were such that we cannot identify in that region the lowest coals known in Northwestern Pennsylvania and the contiguous parts of Ohio, but that we must rather count from above downwards. These conclusions Dr. Newberry is not prepared to accept, and further researches will be necessary before certainty can be attained in this matter. Meanwhile it seems, from a study of its relations to the Pomeroy or Pittsburgh seam, that what is known as the great vein of the Hocking Valley, occupies the horizon of the Upper Freeport coal, E of the Pennsylvania survey, or No. 6 in Dr. Newberry's enumeration, counting from the base. This seam, in the region in question. assumes certain characteristics which, taken in connection with its geographical position, give it a great importance among the coals of the State. The area to be noticed includes the whole or parts of several townships in Perry, Hocking, Vinton, and Athens Counties, lying near the margin of the basin over which the vein in question assumes the character of a dry-burning or splint coal, and has a thickness varying from six to ten and even twelve feet. Its precise limit southward cannot at present be clearly defined, but it has been found as far south as the line of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, with a thickness of six feet, and is mined at various points along the valley of the Hocking River, near Nelsonville, where it attains six or seven feet. THIS paper is a study of the differential flotation of the sulphide minerals in the presence of salts of silver, lead and zinc. In practice, accidental activation due to these salts is more important than their use as reagents to replace copper sulphate. The general method of investigation has been based upon contact tests, the temperature of 35°C. being chosen in conformity with earlier work. Potassium ethyl xanthate and potassium amyl xanthate were selected as collectors and pure sulphide minerals were used. The experimental procedure has been outlined in earlier papers and all solutions were kept carbonate-free.'' Contact, or spreading of an air bubble, at a mineral surface indicates the presence of an adsorbed collector film. PURITY OF REAGENTS The xanthates were purified in the usual manner.1 Neither the cyanide nor the sodium hydroxide solutions contained sufficient carbonate to give a precipitate with barium chloride solution. The silver sulphate was prepared from pure silver nitrate by evaporation with concentrated sulphuric acid until there was no evidence of brown fumes. This solution was diluted and the difficultly soluble sulphate washed with water so that unchanged nitrate was dissolved. The resultant crystal-line powder was pure white. The lead and zinc salts were prepared by dissolving especially pure lead and zinc in C.P. nitric and sulphuric acid solution and the crystals drained. The standard solutions were checked by titration. It was felt desirable to use the sulphate radical wherever possible, but since lead sulphate was insufficiently soluble for the purpose of the experiments, it was necessary to use some other lead salt. A.R. copper sulphate was used without further purification. RESULTS The results are presented in the accompanying figures; the areas of noncontact (nonflotation) are shaded in Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 11; in the remainder they lie to the right of the curve. Zinc Sulphate The curves in Fig. I are to be compared with those for Fig. 2, for which zinc sulphate is absent. This comparison shows that the influence of the zinc ion is usually small. Its influence is more marked, however, for chalcopyrite in the absence of cyanide. The influence of zinc sulphate is also marked for copper-activated sphalerite, for which tests were made only in the absence of cyanide. The results are of importance in the separation of pyrite from copper-activated sphalerite when zinc sulphate is added in the lead flotation section (p. 204 of ref. I). Sphalerite does not adsorb the collector (i.e., become floatable) under the conditions chosen.

TRE solubility of hydrogen in molten copper-tin alloys is of both practical and theoretical interest. From a practical standpoint, data on the equilibrium solubility as a function of temperature, pressure and alloy composition are valuable for a better understanding of porosity problems in bronze castings. From the theoretical point of view the determination of the hydrogen-copper-tin equilibrium is of interest since it extends the laws governing the solution of gases in metals. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the solubility of hydrogen in representative compositions of the copper-tin system at temperatures ranging from above the liquidus to 1300°C. and at pressures from less than 50 mm. of mercury to about atmospheric. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK The solubility of hydrogen in copper was determined by Sieverts and Krumbhaarl in 1910 and by Roentgen and Moeller2 in 1934. Their values are in fair agreement. In 1926 Iwasé3 reported results that were very much higher. The published data on the solubility of hydrogen in tin do not agree. Smithells4 states that no reliable data are available. According to Sieverts and Krumbhaar,5 hydrogen is insoluble in tin. Bircumshaw,6 on the other hand, found a definite solubility at 800°C. The latter's experimental procedure did not provide for stirring of the metal and in his opinion he failed to reach equilibrium. Iwasé3 again reported large solubility values. For copper alloys, Sieverts and Krumbhaar6 distinguished between alloying elements that do not markedly affect the solubility of hydrogen, elements that increase the solubility, and elements that reduce it. They named gold, tin, and aluminum as examples of this last group and reported hydrogen solubility data at 1225°C. for the copper-rich side of these alloy systems at atmospheric pressure. Without giving experimental results, they stated that the amount of hydrogen dissolved by liquid copper alloys is proportional to the square root of the pressure as in pure metals. These authors suggested that in a limited way the effect of an alloying element on the solubility of a gas is related to the constitution diagram for the alloy system. Sieverts7 also called attention to the fact that the curve of hydrogen solubility versus composition of copper-tin alloys shows a sharp change of direction at the composition of Cu3Sn and suggested that this compound persists at least to some extent in the molten state. Iwas3é reported large hydrogen solubility values for several compositions of copper- tin alloys, which appear to be in error.

Waterflooding operations in the Langston-Kleiner field. Young County, Tex., are described. Widespread application of formation fracturing has been practiced in both producing and injection wells. Field performance data arc cited which indicate than no detrimental effect on sweep efficiencies and that probable benefits in imectivily have resulted from the fracture treatments. I N T R O D U C I O N This paper is a report on a waterflood operation which is being carried out in the Lanpston-Kleiner field located in Young County, Tex. The oil reservoir aflected by this flood operation occurs in a Strawn sand member at an approximate depth of 3.550 ft subsurl'ace. The operators of' the project are Kleiner Estate. Turncr. Fiske. and West who are hereinafter collectively referred to as the Operators. Although the operation is unusual in several respects, the distinctive feature of this flood has been the widespread application of hydraulic formation fracturing treatments as a means to improve productivity and injectivity of the wells. It shall he the purpose of this paper to present basic information regarding the reservoir characteristics. op- craling practices, and waterflood behavior so that conclusions may be drawn concerning the effects which the fracture treatments have had on the performance of this water flood to datc. DEVELOP MENT Development of the 3,550 ft Strawn sand reservoir occurred during 1951 and 1952. The early development occurred on the Langston and Davis leases which arc in the northern region of the Operators' holdings and the wells were drilled on 20-acre proration units according to the field rules. However, studies of the economics of this program. coupled with the decision to proceed with pressure maintenance by water injection. resulted in the adoption of wider spacing in the later stages of development. This variation in spacing is apparent upon inspection of Fig. I upon which only the 3,550-ft Strawn sand producing and injection wells have been located on the Operators' properties. The development to the north of the operators leases is Ihe Garvey Strawn field and that to the south is the Taylor Strawn field. It wits determined that unitization of the leases to he involved in the waterflood program was not feasihle. Consequently. a system of offset injection wells, or lease line injection wells, was adopted from place to place as required to protect correlative rights in the program. This resulted in a dispersed array of injection and producing wells with relatively close proximity of wells along lease line areas and wider spacing toward

With only one certain exception coal was never used by the Indians, before white men came to America, for any purpose except as an ornament or for paint. Within the past few years it has been discovered that the Hopi Indians in Navajo County, Arizona, used lignite for burning pottery, about 1000 A. D., as dated by tree rings. They were able to obtain a clear color in their ware that could not be obtained with brushwood fires. The coal was mined by hammers from outcrop openings, some of which can still be seen, and the tools used have been found in them.1 (See also p. 376.) Small figurines made of splint or cannel coal have been found at various localities in western New York, in Ohio and possibly other places, evidently made for ornaments. There is no reason to think they are of any greater age, if as old, as that mentioned above. Some crushed coal was used by the Indians as a black pigment in painting themselves, but apparently the eastern Indians never used coal for any other purposes. Some think that several tribes of Indians in the Northwest, along the Missouri, used coal as fuel, the basis being a statement attributed to Radisson about 1660. In the Jesuit Relations of 1659-1660 it was stated that Radisson anti Groseilliers had just returned from a visit to Lake Superior and beyond. "In the country of the Poualak, which means 'warriors' they say `as wood is scanty in supply and small in size in their country, nature has taught them to make fire with coal from the earth (charbon de terre) and to cover their cabins with skins.'"2 This statement was only hearsay with the good fathers, and the reputation for veracity of the two explorers is not of the best, and it is extremely probable that instead of coal they used turf, dry grass or buffalo chips. In fact in Radisson's Voyages' he does not mention coal at all in his account of the third voyage, when he was supposed to have seen it used. His accounts of his travels are badly mixed, and he and his companions were much better travellers than narrators. None of the early travellers up the Missouri River saw any evidence even then that the Indians were familiar with the use of coal. In the writer's opinion it is unlikely that coal was used as stated by the Jesuits.

THIS symposium is designed to lay the basis for a general discussion of the place of geophysics in the training of geologists. As there is danger that in the ensuing debate individual interests may be given emphasis out of proportion to their place, we shall do well to view the whole field of geological inquiry in order to see the problem in true perspective. THE NATURE OF GEOLOGICAL INQUIRY "Basic" and "Complex" Sciences It is convenient to divide all science into two major divisions, the basic and the complex sciences. The basic sciences separate out from reality such entities as "substances" and "movements," describe their behavior in terms of arbitrary units of measurement and derive from them by progressive abstractions concepts and patterns of behavior that exist between them, so-called general "laws" and "properties" of nature. The complex sciences, on the other hand, deal, with little or no abstraction, with those objects of reality that are accessible to man in the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere.† Their work comprises two types of inquiry. One is concerned with abstractions to the extent of dealing with types rather than individuals-that is, with such things as plants, animals, protoplasm; clouds, streams, glaciers; volcanoes and mountain ranges. It comprises the search for general properties and patterns of behavior or "laws" that characterize the objects and their reactions to each other. These properties and laws apply always, everywhere. They are independent of the stream of time. We may call the results of this sort of inquiry timeless knowledge. The other type of inquiry is concerned with the objects themselves-that is, with this animal and that plant; this river system and that mountain chain; this glacier and that valley. Like all concrete objects in nature, they are subject to change with the passage of time, especially when it is measured in years, centuries, eons. The characteristics by which we recognize them -indeed, their very existence are dependent on their position at this point in the stream of time. This we may call time-bound knowledge. The so-called descriptive sciences are all bound to the past of which the objects of their study are the product and through which alone their present properties can be understood. They are historical sciences. This obvious fact is easily overlooked, which leads to serious misunderstanding, as we shall see later. Dynamic Geology With this broad picture in mind, let us now examine the nature of geological inquiry, defining, for the purposes of this discussion, geology as the science of rocks. A marked gravitational segregation of liquid has been observed to take place in a number of volumetric fields toward the later stages of their oil-producing periods. This phenomenon has been pronounced in thick, highly permeable sand formations such as those of the wilcox zone in Oklahoma City. This observation has prompted considerable research directed toward the semiquantitative determination of the equilibrium saturation distribution of oil vertically throughout a formation at final depletion. In this paper, data are also presented showing the transient distribution of liquid at different stages of the depletion period. Other experimental results show the effect of temperature on the drainage rates of water, Wilcox crude oil, and a close-cut heptane fraction. Intermittent drainage of liquid produced saturation gradients that might well be expected from the flow theories involved, Yields of the various liquids varied from 50 to 75 per cent of the original fluid content of the sand-packed (4 in. by 8 ft.) vertical tube. Introduction In certain volumetric Oil fields the performance of the reservoir during the latter part Of its producing life is governed to a large extent by the downward movement of liquid due to the force of gravity. This is especially true of formations having thick or tilting beds of uniformly high permeability, free of shale breaks. Laverett4 and Katz3 have presented original data and discussed the theory relating to the capillary and gravitational forces acting On liquids contained in a sand body. These investigators have pointed out the importance of such studies in the estimation of future reserves as well as the original fluid content of a reservoir. In this previous work, no data have been reported showing the history of saturation distributions during the drainage period. Since a knowledge Of these transients is helpful in obtaining crude Oil from such a reservoir, the authors have obtained these data during this investigation. Experimental Apparatus The drainage tests were carried out in two vertical tubes, 8 ft. high and consisting of 2-in. and 4-in. standard wrought-iron pipe, respectively. Each tube was equipped with a water jacket, which could be kept virtually isothermal ( ± 1.0ºF.). A diagrammatic sketch of the 4-in. tube and its auxiliaries is shown in Fig. 1. At 6 in. above the base of the tube, and at every foot above this point, core nipples were inserted through the water jacket. These nipples were closely fitted with steel-plug inserts during each drainage run. At the end of the run, these inserts were removed so that cores could be obtained from the sand-packed tube.

THIS discussion is based on statistical manipulation and evaluation of operating data from several commercial blast furnaces which include rather wide variations in practice. We are concerned here mainly with the effect of manganese on sulphur elimination under operating conditions in commercial blast furnaces, but this effect can be outlined more clearly by including certain other variables such as silicon in iron and slag basicity, which are all in part interrelated. Real progress in understanding all of the smelting-zone reactions in this process requires more laboratory studies of slag-metal melts similar to those in the blast furnace, with careful control of oxygen pressure. Such experimental work is very difficult, however, and in the meantime, with the present scarcity of more fundamental data, such statistical trends and correlations as can be obtained from commercial furnace operating records may help in choosing laboratory test conditions as well as adding to our knowledge of operating procedures. We do not know just why the furnace data are apparently so irregular that statistical treatment of large numbers is needed to obtain accurate trends. It is partly caused, no doubt, by the many simultaneous variables present, but there are perhaps also such factors as: (I) the con- tinual swings up and down so characteristic of the process; (2) difficulty of accurate sampling of co-existing phases, as well as (3) the presence of both equilibrium and rate factors as a result of the fast driving of the process. In desulphurization, for example, the flow of thin layers of slag and metal over solid coke surfaces, plus the contact between droplets of iron falling through the slag layer in the hearth, would lead one to expect a close approach to equilibrium. On the other hand, most of the critical part of sulphur removal may occur in a short time and distance below the tuyeres with perhaps an accompanying decrease in oxygen pressure and the concurrent reduction of much of the silicon and manganese, so its degree of approach to equilibrium may be quite variable. Probable Chemistry of Desulphurization Since there is little evidence that sulphur atoms in the iron solution are aasociated to any appreciable extent in molecules such as MnS, the transfer from slag to metal and back again can be written:* (FeS) ? [FeS], [I] hence the following reactions seem most probable in the slag phase, (FeS) + (CaO) ? (CaS) + (FeO), [2] and, (FeS) + (MnO) ? (MnS) + (FeO). 131

CHAUNCEY L. BERRIEN, Butte, Mont. (written discussion).-Having had much actual experience with mine fires which have occurred or have been active in the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. during the past 4 years and having lately visited the fire zone of the United Verde mine with Mr. Tally, I wish to congratulate him for the success which he has had in controlling this fire and making the mine perfectly safe .for his miners. By this work he is not only keeping the property in operation but is reclaiming many lost orebodies. The ventilation system as described by him is practically the same as that used under my direction at the Mountain View mine fire in Butte in 1913 and at the Pennsylvania fire in 1916. This same system is at present being followed at the Leonard mine to extinguish a fire which has been active for 10 years although bulkheaded. The mining system in the Butte mine, at the origination of these fires was the same as that at the United Verde, namely, square setting .accompanied by the use of much timber bulkheading in the stopes owing to heavy ground. The pyritic content of the ore in Butte is not as high, but on the whole conditions have been the same, with the exception of actual location of the fire in the mine. I agree with Mr. Tally that flooding, the use of C02 or any gas, and the use of steam are all impracticable unless the fire zone can be absolutely sealed. His system of upcast escapement shafts in the fire zone, the use of bulkheads and fans to keep the gases away from the firemen, must be resorted to. By the method lie describes actual stoping may be carried on safely if started from the bottom of the fire and if the fire zone extends to the surface. In other words, the fire zone must be isolated from the rest of the mine by bulkheads and solid ground, with no ground above which can be damaged by spread of fire or caving. The serious fires in Butte have .occurred on or between levels in the mines where it was necessary to prevent their .extension upward, downward and laterally while the work of actually extinguishing them was in progress. This necessitated proper bulkheading should we lose control of the fire, the installation of ventilation similar to Mr. Tally's and the systematic drilling of holes with diamond drills for distributing water on the fire and around it.

Plant nutrients are obtained by plants from both the air and the soil. Carbon dioxide, a gaseous form of carbon and oxygen, supplies the carbon which usually makes up 50% or more of plant structure. Plants are capable of absorbing carbon dioxide directly from the air. Most of this nutrient comes from the air, although some carbon dioxide is absorbed by soil water and taken into the plant as liquid. Growing plants use more water than any other substance. Plant nutrients in the soil dissolve in soil water; soil water entering the plant carries nutrients into the plant structure. Water is then given off into the air as the plant breathes or transpires. Inorganic or mineral nutrients essential to plants are supplied through the soil. Inorganic or mineral composition of plants usually is less than 5% of their weight. In most crop-growing areas, much of this nutrition is inadequately supplied from the soil and must be provided by fertilizers. Proper fertilization of a soil to improve its mineral level and productivity is the role of the fertilizer industry. The 13 essential plant nutrients which often must be added to soils or plants and are generally considered fertilizer minerals are categorized as primary minerals (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium); secondary minerals (calcium, magnesium, and sulfur); and micronutrients, or trace minerals (boron, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, molybdenum, and chlorine). These classifications are based on quantity of nutrients utilized by plants and have no implication as to function or degree of necessity. One point of major significance to the fertilizer industry is that not all nutrient carriers supply that nutrient in a chemical form which will be available to the plant. Thus, a product which may be considered a fertilizer mineral may require substantial processing or may require substantial processing or treatment before it becomes useful as a nutrient carrier. Fertilizer Industry Scope Until about 1900 demands for higher crop yields were met simply by bringing new agricultural lands into cultivation. Since that time great progress has been made in increasing yields through fertilization and improved varieties and cultural practices. The importance of the fertilizer industry to the economy and welfare of the US is widely recognized. Fig. 1 illustrates the relationship of lime and fertilizers to crop yields. In terms of tons of fertilizer products, the growth of the industry has been phenomenal, particularly between 1950 and 1980. Table 1 shows the increase in fertilizer usage. The application of the Scintillometer to radioactivrty surveys in boreholes of oil wells has made it possible to determine bed thickness with a high degree of accuracy. This fact, combined with known relation of logging variables, makes thin bed porosity determination practical. With the use of the Scintillometer a method hot been derived whereby the apparent level of radiactivity, as recorded on radiation logs, may be converted to the true level. The true level of radioactivity is that level to which the recording pen would have traveled had the detector remained at a given depth for on infinitely long period of time. This factor is: radioactivity level, Ra, is the apparent radioactivity level, T is the bed thickness, D is drag, and L is the length of the detecting system. This method depends entirely on accurate measurements of bed thickness and drag. A thorough discussion of the concept of time constant and logging speed as related to drag is undertaken. INTRODUCTION Neutron curve interpretation has become one of the accepted methods for porosity determination in oil field practices. A great deal of literature has been published about neutron derived porosities, but this has been concerned with thick beds, or possibly even averaging of a series of thin beds as a single unit. There has been a lack of written information on methods whereby porosity can be evaluated for beds less than 10 ft in thickness. In certain areas, production is derived from relatively thin formations. The importance of thin bed evaluation, the fact that the Scintillometer is an adequate tool for this application, and the general lack of published information concerning neutron porosity for thin beds are the fundamental reasons for presenting this method of porosity determination. This concept is not put forth with the idea of discounting existing methods, but is merely suggested as a modification of other accepted methods of porosity determination which makes no allowance for quantitative evaluation of thin beds. The effects on the neutron log of counting statistics, statistical variation in the porosity of earth materials, and hole size must be taken into account to obtain neutron derived porosities. Since these effects have been described in past literature, the authors have not made an attempt to go into the subject in detail. With the use of statistical and repeated sections on the log, it may be determined which responses on the log actually correspond with lithologic changes. Gentlemen.-The Institute was founded 54 years ago "with the object of promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by means of meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications among its members and associates the information thus obtained," At least once a year it is well to take stock of our assets, review our performance and determine how well we are now carrying out the purposes of our Founders. There can be no question as to the work the Institute has done and is doing in promoting the arts and sciences in the fields of mining and metallurgy. One needs only to contrast the methods, the labor and the costs of a half century ago with those now to visualize how far we have gone in the development of accurate technology and sound economics in mineral and metal production. The great mines, mills and smelters of the present, handling individually thousands of tons per day, would' have been impossible except for the accumulation of knowledge, the development of theory, and the improvement in practice that has characterized the period since the foundation of the Institute. The United States has prospered in the last half century greatly, and this has been due not merely to the possession of great natural resources, but to these resources being reduced to possession and put to work. The absence of customs barriers and the freedom of trade across the whole width of this great continent has been an important factor in the growth of our wealth. Unrestricted interchange of goods has permitted each citizen to draw on the resources of the whole country. However, these are but subsidiary causes of prosperity. The free interchange of scientific and technical data, by making the whole body of facts and theory available to each worker, has made this quick and unrivaled development possible. In promoting this free trade in knowledge the Institute may claim a large place without fear of denial. The .72 volumes of TRANSACTIONS, the special volumes, the bulletins and the other publications that have been issued, include a store of knowledge of the arts and sciences related to the production and use of metals and minerals not duplicated elsewhere. But little was known of the coals of Southeastern Ohio until the present survey of the State under Dr. Newberry began its work. The results of the geological investigations of Prof. E. B. Andrews in this region, and of the chemical investigations of Prof. T. G. Wormley, both of which appear in the reports of the survey for 1869 and 1874, and more recent special reports by the former, together with some data for which I am indebted to the kindness of Dr. Newberry, and my own limited observations, have served me for the preparation of the following notice of the coals lying on the western border of the great Appalachian coal-basin in the region drained by the Hocking River and its tributaries, and belonging to the Lower Coal-Measures. Some uncertainty exists as to the place in the suc- ' cession of the lower coals to be assigned to the seams known and mined in the Hocking Valley. It is the opinion of Prof. Andrews that the inequalities of the original surface were such that we cannot identify in that region the lowest coals known in Northwestern Pennsylvania and the contiguous parts of Ohio, but that we must rather count from above downwards. These conclusions Dr. Newberry is not prepared to accept, and further researches will be necessary before certainty can be attained in this matter. Meanwhile it seems, from a study of its relations to the Pomeroy or Pittsburgh seam, that what is known as the great vein of the Hocking Valley, occupies the horizon of the Upper Freeport coal, E of the Pennsylvania survey, or No. 6 in Dr. Newberry's enumeration, counting from the base. This seam, in the region in question. assumes certain characteristics which, taken in connection with its geographical position, give it a great importance among the coals of the State. The area to be noticed includes the whole or parts of several townships in Perry, Hocking, Vinton, and Athens Counties, lying near the margin of the basin over which the vein in question assumes the character of a dry-burning or splint coal, and has a thickness varying from six to ten and even twelve feet. Its precise limit southward cannot at present be clearly defined, but it has been found as far south as the line of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, with a thickness of six feet, and is mined at various points along the valley of the Hocking River, near Nelsonville, where it attains six or seven feet. THE CHAIRMAN (WILLIAM KELLY, Vulcan, Mich.).-Some 8 or 9 years ago I was at Daiquiri, only a. few miles east of Firmeza, where there are deposits of iron ore of the same general character. There is a great conical hill, perhaps 800 or 1,000 ft. in height and the ore deposit appears to be somewhat in a canoe shape on one side of the hill. The mining has been done by quarrying the ore in benches. These are called levels and to go to the 10th level it was necessary to take mules and ride to the top of the hill, which was to me an upside down arrangement of numbering levels and a novel method of entering and viewing a mine. A little copper ore can be seen in places, and not being a geologist I thought the deposit might possibly be a gossan, but none of the geologists who have written on the subject approve of this hypothesis and the great question seems to be what part, if any, the limestones have played in the origin of ore; whether these deposits are replacements of limestone and whether they are contact ,deposits between the limestone and the other rocks. Examinations have been made by many eminent geologists and the problem has been discussed vigorously on both sides. The deposits are exceedingly interesting from a commercial standpoint and although they have been studied for a number off years the origin of the ore is still a difficult and somewhat controversial question. J. T. SINGEWALD, JR., Baltimore, Md.-I have had the privilege of visiting these deposits and have been very much interested in this paper, of Dr. Roesler's; having been on the ground, I can easily appreciate the difficulties under which he labored in attempting to work out the geology of that region, and he certainly deserves considerable credit for the way in which he has deciphered the geological relations of the Firmeza district. There are several points in his paper 1 ,would like to discuss; first, in regard to the geological interpretations. His differs from previous interpretations in the relative age of the diorite and the granite, but you will note that Prof. Lindgren suggests the probability. that those two rocks are very closely of the same age, and Prof. Kemp actually suggests, although he does not-accept the idea, that the granite is probably later than the diorite, so that there seems to be no particular reason

The thermal processes for the production of metallic magnesium can be divided into two general classifications, the direct reduction of magnesia with carbon and the indirect reduction of compounds of magnesium by reducing agents that are themselves products of carbon reduction. The latter are so chosen as to cause reduction of magnesium compounds wherein only the magnesium is liberated in the vapor phase. Reducing agents used are: calcium carbide, silicon carbide, silicon, aluminum, various silicides or combinations of calcium, aluminum, silicon in iron. All of these are products of highly endothermic reactions and, with the exception of scrap aluminum, can be produced in an open, submerged arc furnace; that is, the arc is covered only by the charge itself. The more investment in energy required to prepare such a reducing agent, the less is the energy required in the subsequent step to reduce the magnesium compound to the metal. It is impossible, however, to avoid the laws of thermodynamics, no matter how much circumambulation is resorted to in the preparation of successively more powerful reducing agents. Since each such step carries forward its own inefficiencies, it appears evident that the ultimate status of such processes is dependent upon the development of by-products. The direct reduction of magnesium oxide by carbon has a decided appeal to both the scientist and the industrialist. The successful production of the carbo-thermic plant at Permanente is a significant fact in the substantiation of this concept. Like most developments, however, the history of carbon reduction of magnesia is not one of triumph after triumph, or immediate heady success to the investigators. It is understood that one of the early investigators conducted an experiment wherein he placed carbon and magnesia in one end of an evacuated tube and managed to heat this end to a temperature high enough that magnesia and carbon deposited at the other end of the tube. The charge, unreduced, appeared to have been completely transported from the hot to the cold end of the tube. This raised doubt for some time as to whether magnesia could be reduced at all with carbon. It was correctly suspected, however, that the magnesia was in fact reduced and the resultant magnesium vapor and carbon monoxide reacted upon one another upon reduction in temperature to reform the starting ingredients. Attempts were then made to dilute the two vapors by passing a considerable stream of hydrogen through an arc furnace charged with magnesia and carbon. Thus by dilution of the products it was' expected to obtain metallic magnesium. The results were positive and metallic magnesium was .0
