The work of The Bahrein Petroleum Company, Ltd., on Bahrein Island consisted mainly in continuing development work and prospecting previously reported. The exploratory work, however, has been greatly minimized and new wells are being drilled, chiefly for the development of larger production; 20 wells had been completed by the end of 1935 and 8 were being drilled. In addition to what has been referred to as the ''main pay," two deeper productive horizons have been discovered, which apparently will greatly increase the potential of the field although the areal extent of this lower production has not yet been determined. The proven acreage of the "main pay" is more than 12,500 acres. Current production (principally from the upper horizons) is about 13,400 bbl. a day. The construction of a 10,000-bb1.-a-day refinery has begun and is to be in operation by July, 1936. It is expected that the capacity will be considerably increased at a later date. The construction of office buildings and a permanent camp has been almost completed. In Saudi Arabia the California Arabian Standard Oil Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Standard Oil Company of California, spudded in a well in April, 1935, near the village of Dammam, on the Persian Gulf coast of A1 Hasa. Although several important showings of high-gravity oil and considerable gas have been found, the well is not yet considcred a commercial producer. Dammam well No. 2 has been started farther south on the same structure. A great deal of reconnaissance and some detailed geological work has been completed during the last three field seasons. In order to overcome difficulties of transportation over the desert sand, unusual methods have been used. The parlies penctrating the interior by the use of automobiles and trucks have been supplied with gasoline and provisions by caravans of camels. Mail and supp1ies of lighter weight urgently needed have been carried to the field men by an airplane operated by the geological division of the company. Each party has been supplied with a radio receiving and transmitting set to keep in contact with the airplane as well as with geological headquarters at Jubail on the coast of A1 Hasa.

THE boiler from which these stay-bolts have just been obtained was that of the locomotive Catasauqua, Lehigh Valley Railroad, built at the company's shops, South Easton, Pa., in 1864. The iron is Lowmoor, and has been in use nearly ten years. The stay-bolts have become highly crystallized from some cause, and are very brittle, only requiring three blows of an ordinary machinist's hammer to break them. On the other hand, when annealed they are remarkably tough, as shown by the doubled sample. The majority of the broken bolts were found to be along the curve of the shell from a to c, Fig. 6. All of them were broken just inside the shell, and in no case next the fire-box. The fractures seen to have been of slow procedure, beginning at the top of the bolt, gradually working deeper and deeper until the pressure of steam overcame the tenacity of the remaining parts. Unequal contraction and expansion of the parts of the boiler seems in this case to be the only existing cause for a fracture. We cannot, from the data obtained, prove to an absolute certainty the manner in which the combined forces generated by the unequal contraction and expansion of the parts have arrived at their resultant work ; but we can, from these data and from existing circumstances, arrive at what seems to be a fair supposition, and thus at least anticipate the truth. The contraction and expansion in locomotive boilers has a large range between its extremes, and is very variable, both with reference to time and to their component parts. The shell and fire-box do not, perhaps, at any time, contract and expand at the same rate, nor proportionally ; but, on the contrary, owing to the great changes in temperature that take place both in the atmosphere around the shell, and in the fire in the fire-box, their condition is often changed suddenly, and widely from that which they just previously had. T. D. Yensen.*—As my information is of a negative nature, I think it belongs under this paper. We are particularly interested in magnetic materials and we would like very much on occasions to make use of powder metallurgy. We have tried repeatedly to use powder metallurgy in preparing our nickel alloys but always. with negative results; that is, we cannot get as good magnetic properties by powder metallurgy as we can by starting with a molten material. We have tried by all possible means to make materials' like 50 per cent iron-nickel alloys by powder metallurgy. The compacts can be regularly lorged and rolled but no matter what we do in the way of annealing, the magnetic properties come out very much poorer than if we start with molten material. F. V. Lenel. †—I want to mention one characteristic of articles made from metal powders which distinguishes them from die castings; that is, their wear resistance. Die castings usually are made from zinc or aluminum alloys and a few copper-zinc alloys; all of them are comparatively soft and not very wear resistant. I know of a number of cases where powder metallurgy rather than the die-casting method was used for producing a certain part because higher wear resistance was needed than could be attained in die castings. A, J. LanghammeR.*—The subject of powder metallurgy is somewhat difficult to discuss, and portray, in the time that his been allotted. Most of you would rightly be bored if we went into details. However, I will cite one incident that possibly will help illustrate some of the potentials. Last summer I was in Washington and met Navy officials for the purpose of studying the possibility of making a certain part by powder metallurgy. The part is highly intricate and I happened to remark that the material cost would be high; that is, the cost on one raw material. Promptly a high-ranking Navy officer said: "Mr. Langhammer, if you must pay x dollars a pound for the raw material, but achieve the desired results, the cost of the finished part would still be low."

Petroleum operations in Bolivia are still limited to those of the subsidiaries of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey. Development work is being carried on at Sanandita and at Bermejo and testing operations in the north. Five wells have been completed at Sanandita. Wells 1 and 2 are producers, 3 and 5, which are north of 1 and 2, are poor wells, and well 4, to the south, was dry. In the Bermejo field, well 5 has just been completed. No information as to the production is obtainable. In the north one string was operated at each of the following locations: Machareti, Camatindi and Camiri. The well completed at Machareti during the year was a failure. The result of the others is not known. It is reported on good authority that a pipe line will be completed in 1931 to connect the Sanandita field with the Lomitas field in the Argentine. This will place Bolivia among the ranks of the producing countries of South America for the first time. This development indicates that some arrangement has been arrived at with the Argentine Government for the importation of Bolivian oil. During 1930 the Bolivian Government declared in effect the new Petroleum Law which had been expected for such a long time. One of the first acts of the military junta, which rose to power through a coup d'état, was to cancel this law, so that Bolivian oil operations are still under the old law of 1921. One new local company was formed to exploit 1,500,000 hectares near the town of Cochabamba. The Bolivia Concessions, Ltd., which had a concession permitting the selection of 17,000,000 acres in eastern Bolivia, is reported to have failed in 1930 and is now being liquidated. Chile During 1930 the Chilean Government entered into a contract with an individual to explore in five distinct zones of the Republic. According to the contract, geologists must be at work there by May 1 of this year and a well must be started by the end of 1931. If the operations are

The existence of a grain size stabilization effect on martensitic type reactions as shown by Scheill in an iron-29 pct nickel alloy and by Troiano and Tokich2 in cobalt prompted a review of other martensitic reactions to determine if this stabilization effect is characteristic of all martensite type reactions. Preliminary work has shown this effect to be present both in the gamma —+ epsilon transformation in an iron-20 pct manganese alloy and the martensite transformation of SAE 4140 and 3 pct Cr-O.40 pct steels. No appreciable effect was found in an SAE 2340 steel. The M, temperature for the gamma —+ epsilon transformation was lowered from 380°F to about room temperature by varying the annealing treatment following cold work as shown in Table I. The effect of austenitic grain size on the M, of three steels is shown in Table 2. M, was deter- mined by the conventional quench-temper method of Greninger and Troiano. In a single crystal the change in external shape concomitant with the homogeneous shear mechanism of the martensite transformation can take place unhindered. In a polycrystalline specimen a restraint of these changes must occur at the grain boundaries. Therefore, the smaller the grain size the greater the shear strain energy necessary for the formation of a martensite crystal. The degree of lowering of M, due to the reduction of grain size is much greater when the change in crystal structure involves only a small energy change, such as face-centered cubic —+ close packed hexagonal (that is, CO and Fe-20 pct manganese alloy). The maximum lowering of M, observed in the steels investigated was 50°F with a change in the ASTM austenitic grain size of 1-2 to 8-9. In comparison, the crystal structure change face-centered cubic —+ body-centered tetragonal involves a considerable energy change. There is little doubt that with much finer grain sizes the increased grain boundary restraint would greatly enhance this stabilization effect. The implications of this phenomenon are multifold. Coal is one of our oldest known commodities. Historic evidence indicates that this fossil-formed fuel was used in China and in Wales some 3000 to 4000 pears ago. Coal was discovered in North America in 1679 by French explorers in northern Illinois, and in 1700 a colony of Huguenots came across bituminous coal in Virginia. One might think by this long history of a single commodity that the string was about played out. Quite the contrary, coal is in greater demand than ever before and coal mining today is a modern industry. It is in an unprecedented growth period as the nation-and the world-demands more and more energy coincident with dwindling reserves of other fossil fuels. By the year 2000 the demand for coal is expected to at least double the current level of some 600 million tons annually despite the advent of nuclear power. To meet this challenge, the coal industry is vitally in need of an increasing supply of technically trained and progressive manpower. And, coupled with a serious shortage of engineers and technicians, it represents a rich vein of occupation opportunities-all the way up to top career levels. Today, coal mining is a complex, highly specialized industry concerned with more than just getting coal from the earth and putting it into the furnaces of the consumer. The industry is concerned with the environment, with maintaining a viable ecology. Recognizing the ramifications of global economics, the industry is very much aware of its important position in contributing to a constantly rising standard of living throughout the world. The key to rewarding employment in the coal industry is skill-skill that has been developed by education, training, and experience. None of these alone is enough; all three are necessary today to produce the skill needed to meet the employment requirements of the coal industry. Routine manual labor will no longer do the job in coal mining. In the United States coal mining has been mechanized to a degree unsurpassed anywhere else in the world, and the coal worker must be thoroughly

The pattern of the coal industry west of the Mississippi River, so far as its history is concerned, is entirely different from that to the east of the "Father of Waters." When the Louisiana Purchase was consummated, one of Jefferson's first thoughts was to ascertain what sort of a country had been purchased, and to that end he sent Lewis and Clark to ascend the Missouri River and to reach the Pacific Ocean if possible, but above all to bring back a report showing the character of the country, its mineral and other resources, inhabitants, etc. This first expedition was supplemented by others to various parts of the vast domain for the same purpose; years later, when transportation routes were necessary to hold and develop the western country, a number of expeditions were sent to explore possible routes for railroads. The records of nearly all of these explorers, as will be shown later, contain references to coal in many localities, the possible value of which was realized but its potential value remained dormant for many years until increasing population and methods of transport made markets available. Missouri was the first state west of the Mississippi in which coal was produced and the names of a number of places show that the French were familiar with the coal deposits there. Lewis and Clark, soon after they left St. Louis, passed "a remarkable Coal Hill on the Larboard Side, called by the French Carbonere, this hill appeares to Contain great quantity of Coal."1 This hill was about seven miles below St. Charles. No other outcrops were seen by them until they had passed the present limits of the state. The Louisiana Gazette of April 9, 1805 contained an article on "The Missouri," author not stated, which said, "the short stay we have generally made among the savage nations has prevented us from making those researches, which would have supplied us with a more extensive information respecting the various mines found on the borders of the Missouri; we know with certainty only those of iron, lead and coal." In 1806 Pike passed through Missouri on his tour to Mexico. On August 17th, along the Osage River he remarked, "here the river-bank is

The broad picture of petroleum refining engineering during 1934 continued to show a tendency in the direction of highly specialized processing improvements, particularly in manufacture of lubricating oil. The slowing up of the trend toward higher octane products in non-premium gasoline noticed in 1933 was definitely established as a fact by 1934 development, with just a slight indication of recession. No outstanding engineering achievements can be credited to 1934 in refinery cracking, unless the completion and successful operation of the 30,000-bbl. crude capacity combination cracking and skimming unit at Texas City, Texas, and a 20,000-bbl. similar unit in the East can be listed as such. Development and improvement was largely a continuation of previous lines of endeavor. Such trend as there is shows a continnation in the direction of very large integrated skimming and cracking units. A lessening of the cost of ethyl lead, coupled with the reaching of the octane number "ceiling," kept the subject of "reforming" low-octane gasoline into high-octane products pretty well in the background. Considerable interest, however, was shown during the year in cracking and polymerizing of refinery gases into high-octane motor fuel. The commercial development and application of this activity was greater in 1934 than during any previous year. Fair yields of gasoline of satisfactory stability and high antiknock value were reported, ranging from 2 to 8 gal. per 1000 cu. ft. of fixed refinery gas, yields varying with both the nature of refinery gas treated and processing methods. Assuming economic feasibility, regarding which there is still difference of opinion, gas polymerization offers the industry a possible outlet for its gases more in keeping with its basic chemical composition and value. The increased interest of railroads and heavy-duty truck and tractor manufacturers served to focus more attention on diesel fuels. The publicity given the Union Pacific diesel train, the Burlington "Zephyr" and others operated on special diesel fuels served to revive the intimations and fears of several years ago as to the ultimate replacement of the gasoline motor by diesel engines in even the passenger car field. It is generally believed that the flowing of wells through tubing instead of casing results in the conservation of gas. It is further believed that use of tubing prolongs the flowing life of a well and results in greater ultimate recovery, provided either that there are no adjacent wells, or that any adjacent wells are similarly operated. Recent experience in the flowing of Buckbee zone wells at Santa Fe Springs has not only substantiated both of these beliefs but has led to the further conclusion that the use of tubing results in a greater cumulative flowing production, ' even in a highly competitive field like Santa Fe Springs, where the wells concerned are closely offset by wells of both the same and other companies flowing through casing. Further, gas-oil ratio has been so reduced that greater ultimate recovery can be expected. In the belief that such would be the case, the majority of the Buckbee zone wells of one company were brought in through tubing, but enough wells were flowed through casing to form the basis for a comparison. For the purpose of this comparison, wells with flow strings 2½ or 3-in. dia. are designated as tubed wells, while those having flow strings larger than 3-in. dia. are designated as untubed wells. Casing used was mostly of 5 ¾-in. dia., the remainder being of 4¾-in. dia. There were 15 tubed wells and 8 untubed wells and they were scattered over the field in such a way that neither group appears to have any distinct advantage as regards location. Locations of all wells involved in the comparison are shown on Fig. 1. All the Buckbee sand wells of the company are included in the average production curves, with the exception of eight that were unsatisfactory for reasons other than the method of flowing. Findings 1. Buckbee sand wells flowing through casing larger than 3 in. had an average maximum production rate of 4670 bbl. per day, while wells flowed through straight tubing or 3-in. casing had an average maximum production of only 3300 bbl. per day. (See Fig. 2.)

SnelLIng, presented at the New York and San Francisco meetings, February and September, 1915, respectively, and printed in Bulletin No. 100, April, 1915, pp. 695 to 704 and Trans., li, pp. 657 to 671. A. C. McLaUghlin, San Francisco, Ca1.—It seems to me that Mr. Snelling's work, if it is what it appears to be, is one of the most important contributions to petroleum technology that has been brought out in the last 25 years. If his end products are what they seem to be, he has made. a discovery, which, in my judgment, will revolutionize the petroleum industry. As to industrially carrying out these processes I do not think there is the slightest difficulty, for I have had some work recently where crude oils were handled successfully at a temperature of 750" F, and pressure of 750 lb. per square inch. William A. WillIams, San francisco, Ca1.—What metal did you use, Mr. McLaughlin? A. C. McLauGHILIN.—Ordinaly seamless tubing, extra strong. William A. Williams.—Tests were made in Dr. Rittman's experimental plant at Pittsburgh, upon samples of residuum furnished by Mr. Bell, the residuum being the remainder of the crude oil after the lighter fractions had been removed. After the material had been run through Dr. Bittman's plant, yields of from 43 to 58 per cent. of material, boiling under 150" C. were obtained. The distillate had a peculiar odor, due to the presence of benzene, toluene, and other unsaturated hydrocarbons. W. N. Best, New York, N. Y.—What is the difference between the Rittman and the Snelling process or system? William A. Williams.—he fundamental difference is that reactions take place under relatively higher temperatures and pressures and with none of the oil present in its original or liquid state, while the reactions secured by Mr. Snelling and other investigators have been from the liquids in the presence of some vapors. Under such conditions as Mr. Snelling operates, the temperatures and pressures used are limited and the flexibility in the control of these variables is extremely limited when compared with the Rittman process.

UNEMPLOYMENT no longer finds its cure in pros-perity. Not only is there surplus labor in over-developed industries -like coal -mining, but more and more man, power is being released by technical im-provements in production. A new problem in industry has arisen: What is to be done with the labor dis-pensed with by better methods and more highly de-veloped equipment? Are luxury industries the logical outlet for our new unemployed? There has been a marked decline in employment in the manufacturing industries during 1927. Its extent is shown by the Bureau of Labor Statistics index, which receded from a high of 91.4 in March to 87.3 in October, with an estimated figure of approximately 85 in De-cember. This was a drop between the high and low points in the year of about 7 per cent, which means roughly that at the close of 1927 there were approxi-mately 600,000 fewer persons employed in manufac-turing industries than in March -of 1927, and upward of 400,000 less than in December, 1926. Does this de-cline reflect a swing toward industrial depression? Paradoxically it does not; the cause of unemployment at this time does not lie in a lack of prosperity, but rather is largely traceable to prosperity. Capital has been abundant and has gone back into production in the form of great increases in mechanization and new processing. Management is more than ever on the alert to improve methods, as well as to cut costs through reduction of personnel. Properly applied incentives and employee cooperation also have increased produc-tion per man. A new phenomenon in the industrial world-technological unemployment-is the result. Of course, there are added to those unemployed be-cause of the reasons just considered those affected by the coal strike, the period of shutdown at the Ford plants, and the reduction in expenditures by railroads and public utilities. This whole situation suggests that the problem of unemployment is not entirely solved by ironing out seasonal variations or by achieving business prosperity.

The iron formation of the Iron River, Crystal Falls, and Florence districts probably is not of one geologic age only but of at least two ages. The ores, therefore, are of different characteristics. But in general the geologic conditions that occasioned the development of the orebodies have been essentially the same throughout the district and the types and structures of the orebodies are very similar in different parts of the area. In general, the iron formation of this area has been folded into a series of close pitching synclines and anticlines; minor folds of many orders are included in the major folds. The pitching synclines have been particularly favorable places for the circulation of ground waters, which in such troughs have developed orebodies through the familiar process of leaching out the silica in the iron formation, oxidizing and concentrating ferrous iron compounds in the rocks. The iron formation of this area is interbedded with and has interbedded in it certain slate or slaty layers that, in addition to the foot wall of the iron formation proper, act as impervious layers in the pitching troughs, to direct and control the flow of underground waters. In most places, the entire iron formation in a structural trough is not altered into iron ore; the orebody may be lens-shaped and exhibit no folding in its layers, outline, or shape, but almost without exception such bodies have been developed in folds and because of the influence of folds, and structurally they occupy only one limb of a fold. Many orebodies occupy the entire trough of a minor fold and the structure of the fold can be traced throughout the orebody. Many definitely recognizable horizon markers in or associated with the iron formation occur in this district and serve as valuable guides to the engineer or geologist in exploring an orebody whether by drilling or underground mining development. Among such markers are the talc schist (an altered dolomite) and the Traders slate at the base of old Menominee iron formation proper, and the interbedded Brier slates and overlying Hanbury dates; and certain graphitic slates and gray-wackel in the Iron River and Crystal Falls area.

The account of oil and gas production in Tennessee, and of the geological factors related to such production, as given by the writer' a few years ago needs to be supplemented by brief statements as to production and development to bring it up to date. Activity in searching for favorable geological structures or in drilling given areas has never been comparable to the intensive work done in states of large production. It is not possible, therefore, to prepare a statement giving the details that may be readily available in such states, but instead one must be content with more general statements. In the past 10 or 12 years there has been a moderate amount of drilling for both oil and gas widely scattered over the state. Of much of this there is no available record. Morgan, Clay, Scott and Pickett counties have had more oil-drilling activity than any other counties, and likewise they have had almost all of the oil production. In Scott and Morgan counties production centers about Sunbright and Glenmary, the oil coming from the St. Louis limestone at a depth of 1200 to 1500 ft. Wells usually are small but generally hold up well. In Clay, Pickett, Fentress, Overton, Macon and Sumner counties there is a large area in which there are many small structural domes, some of which have been drilled. Wells vary from a few barrels to several hundred flush production and last for some years. The oil comes from porous weathered zones, mostly in the Trenton division of the Ordovician, though some comes from lower horizons beneath one or more bentonite beds that serve as horizon markers and are known as the "pencil cave." Wells recently drilled in the Central Basin and in the Western Highland Rim have been dry or have had only shows of oil. The horizons tested are also usually Ordovician in the Central Basin and usually either Ordovician or Mississippian; occasionally also Devonian on the Highland Rim. In the Gulf Embayment area of West Tennessee there has been but little activity. Cooperative education for engineers is based on the premise that theory and practice are inseparable in training men for the engineering profession, and the two must be advanced simultaneously in order to train men most successfully and efficiently. The teaching of theory obviously should be done by the college but the practice must be obtained in the field where the application of the theory is made. The ideally trained engineer is one that knows theory, can apply the theory to practice, can direct, and work with, his fellow men. The old four-year plan of training engineers does a fair job of teaching the underlying theory of engineering but neglects entirely the training necessary for application of the theory, except through laboratory experiments, and the training in adjustments necessary to direct and work with men. An engineer, like a lawyer, doctor, dentist or other professionally trained man, cannot practice until he has had practical experiences that give him a knowledge of the other phases of his profession. The doctor serves as an interne, the lawyer reads law in the office of a practicing attorney, and the engineer must enter the profession as a laborer or as an apprentice, unless he has had the advantage of a cooperative education. Cooperative education provides the opportunity for the coordination of practical and theoretical training for the engineering profession throughout the period of training and thus eliminates many that are unfit to enter the profession, giving them an opportunity to seek other fields for which they may be better fitted, and reduces the overhead in industry that results from a large turnover of men not fitted for the profession. The Cooperative Plan Cooperative education in engineering is no longer an experiment. It was inaugurated at the University of Cincinnati in 1904 by Dean Herman Schneider, and has worked successfully ever since. Over twenty schools offer this type of education and many thousands of young men have had the opportunity to receive their technical training under this plan. Under the cooperative plan a student attends class for a period of eight weeks, then enters industry for eight weeks, maintaining this schedule

IN the apparatus for measuring internal friction shown in fig. 1, a modification of that described by Kê,1,2 the parasitic energy loss or background is equivalent to a Q-1 of approximately 4x10-5. This low value of background was obtained by using a jeweler's collet of appropriate size for the upper support, eliminating lateral motion without immersing the bob in oil, and designing the bob to reduce air resistance. The pendulum is supported on the frame through a snug fitting, sliding rotary joint (fig. I-B). A slight twist of the top imparts essentially pure torsional motion to the pendulum. No evidence of energy loss in the sliding joint has been observed. In the bob (E) steel balls are used in the torsion arm, and the bottom is filled with lead giving a total weight of 94 g. A lighter bob may be used for small diameter specimens. Another bob was a solid disc with provision for adding discs to change the frequency. The oscillating image of the filament is recorded on a revolving drum camera (fig. 1-3) driven by a synchronous motor. This allows use of frequencies higher than can be measured visually on a glass scale. Samples varying in diameter from 0.020 to 0.075 in. have been measured, the frequencies have ranged from 1 to 12 cps, and the maximum strain varied from 0.5 to 10x10-5. With appropriate modification the sample may be placed in a thermostat. The apparatus may also be used to measure the shear modulus. In the examples of measurement given in table I the internal friction of Permendur and the 46.8 Ni-Fe alloy are due, for the most part, to magneto-mechanical hysteresis8 (elastic hysteresis accompanying stress-induced magnetostriction) which depends on strain amplitude and increases with annealing. Reserves of Lake Superior Manganiferous Iron Ores Appendix-to paper by CARL ZAPFFE, presented at the Cleveland Meeting and issued, as Pamphlet No. 1664-C, with MINING AND METALLURGY, May, 1927. The author has made several test calculations on the basis of manganese units that are and may be involved. These are summarized here, as follows: On the basis of ore produced since 1902, the average annual requirement of manganese units would be 91,000 tons; on the basis of the production of the past 4 or 5 years, the requirement would be 145,000 tons; on the basis of the year 1925 only, the requirement would be 155,000 tons. Applying the percentage of increase for the next 20 years, as determined by the plat shown as Fig. 3, the total requirement for 20 years would be 3,254,000 to 3,572,000 tons, if one used either 145,000 tons or 155,000 tons as a starting point. We have the following interesting facts: (1) The Michigan ores contain only about one-half the manganese that the Cuyuna ore does; (2) the Cuyuna district now produces one-half the ore required; (3) the known tonnage of Cuyuna reserves is greater than the speculative reserve offered for Michigan; (4) at the present rate of production considered by tons, Michigan ores ought to be exhausted in 20 years or less while Cuyuna ores would last up to 44 years. We should now reduce the estimated reserves to a basis of manganese, units. Using the tonnages listed in Combinations 2, 3, 4 and 5, the reserves total 3,118,225 tons, 3,781,995 tons, 5,041,995 tons and 5,560,342 tons, respectively. Therefore, needing at the most 3,572,000 tons, as shown above, either Combination 3, 4 or 5 will not only suffice but will leave an excess-enough for 1 or 2 years for Combination 3, 9 or 10 years for Combination 4, and 12' to 13 years for Combination 5. This means that for Combination 5, without using tonnages obtained from beneficiating or from mixing poor ores, the reserves are ample for about 33 years.

Following a brief introduction, an outline is given of the four main conditions in which gases may be associated with metals; namely, (1) adsorbed gases, (2) dissolved gases, (3) gases in chemical combination, (4) gases entrapped in blowholes or cavities. Adsorption is essentially a surface phenomenon and is regarded as the attachment of outside molecules or atoms to the exposed free valencies of the atoms comprising the surface layers. In many cases where adsorbed films of gas are formed this is accompanied by a process of diffusion of the gas into the metal itself. This is particularly true in respect to iron and hydrogen, and experiments have shown that there is no difference between the rate at which hydrogen diffuses through a single crystal of iron arid through the same material after it has been recrystal-lized into a mass of small crystals. This does not prevent a somewhat greater concentration of gas at the boundaries of adjacent crystals, nor does it mean that the effect of the gas will be the same at the boundaries as it is within the body of the crystals. Indeed, under certain conditions, iron is rendered very brittle at the crystal boundaries, as shown in experiments by Pfeil with samples of almost pure iron. Much work has been done by many investigators concerning the temperature and conditions under which dissolved hydrogen, in particular, can be at least partially removed from different metals. With iron, the hydrogen that has diffused into the metal as a result of acid attack by pickling or by electrolytic deposition of the gas on the metal is partly removed by exposing the metal to the atmosphere at ordinary temperatures. Considerably more can be eliminated by raising the temperature, and even greater quantities by jointly raising the temperature and reducing the pressure. Annealing at suitable temperatures completely removes the bad effects of excessive mounts of hydrogen dissolved in or associated with iron. This is shown by the data plotted in Fig. 1, giving values for electrolytic iron sheets after annealing at temperatures between 250" and 950" C. The hydrogen brittleness is rapidly diminished at

MOULD*—Has consideration been given to the problem of retreating the 4,000,000 ton tailings pile to recover the very considerable amount of asbestos fiber that was lost over the years due to insufficient operation and poor recoveries? Also, what was known about the possible content of chromite and the sulphides of nickel and cobalt? M. J. MESSEL (author's reply)—Consideration was given to the problem but nothing concrete has been done up to this time. W. P. MOULD—I am certain the tail- ings contain a very considerable quantity of fiber, not all of which is in the shortest lengths, because in the milling of talc rock from a neighboring location having a common origin with the asbestos bearing serpentine source of the tailings pile, a concentrate carrying 15 pct Ni and Co in complex sulphides and constituting about 4/10 of 1 pct of the talc rock was recovered. In the belief that the tailings also contained an appreciable content of chromite (then in demand, 1937) it was suggested to the management of the asbestos company that a truck load of the current tailings be sent to the flotation plant of the talc company where it would be put over the concentrating tables in an effort to discover the presence and roughly the percentages of chromite, nickel, and cobalt. Preparations for the test were woefully inadequate and the test was completely snarled up by the surprisingly large quantity of asbestos fiber from 1 in. long down to very short fiber, all of which matted up and plugged launders and pumps with disastrous effects and practically the total loss of the sample. If anything was indicaded by the test, it was that a wet process for milling asbestos was worthy of very serious consideration. M. J. MESSEL—A wet milling process for tailings retreatment only, is at present under study at our plant. One asbestos mining company in Canada has constructed a fairly large test plant for this purpose, but as yet no definite results have been obtained other than in a small test unit plant which were in some respects quite encouraging.

RECENTLY a comprehensive investigation of the various sigma binary alloys was published by Duwez and Baen.1 It was shown that the following conditions are necessary for the formation of the sigma phase: (1) the difference in atomic diameters of the two alloying metals must not be more than about 8 pct; (2) of the two elements which form sigma, one must exhibit a body-centered cubic structure while the second metal must be face-centered cubic, at least in one of its allotropic forms. In addition, a tetragonal unit cell was proposed and powder patterns of six sigma phases were indexed for d spacings greater than 1.640 kx. Since the indexing, based on tetragonal symmetry, led to only fair agreement, the possibility of sigma being orthorhombic was investigated. Various methods for indexing orthorhombic powder patterns are de- scribed in the literature.' The method used in this investigation was a graphical examination of the differences in values of sin' 9 for the adjacent lines of the powder diffraction pattern. This method led to a complete indexing of the Cr-Co (60-40) pattern. Because of the strong similarity between the various sigma alloys, it was then possible to assign indexes to the patterns of Fe-Cr (50-50), Fe-Cr-Mo (30-30-40), Fe-V (50-50), Co-V (50-50), and Ni-V (50-50). The values of sin' 9 and indexes of the six sigma alloys, together with visually estimated intensities, are presented in table 1. In general, the similitude between the six patterns is quite good. For spacings greater than 1.75 kx a few differences are noticeable. In the Ni-V pattern, no (320) exists and the two strong lines (030) and (031) are separated by only two lines of lower intensity, unlike any of the other sigma patterns. However, very little is known about the Ni-V phase diagram and it is possible that the equal atomic percentage composition in this system lies in a two-phase region.
