Dr. Maurer has reviewed the large and confused field of rock mechanics and drilling. We have focused our attention on advance drilling and the disengagement of rock. To understand drilling in greater detail is certainly desirable, but such understanding does not necessarily hold any certain promise of near-term practical advancement. In the longer term, it is probably essential. Present work on drilling and our understanding of drilling falls roughly into three separate classes (and, indeed, these are in no way peculiar to drilling): 1) we have knowledge of certain (scientific) topics which seem to be relevant to the process, 2) we have knowledge of the drilling process in both qualitative and quantitative terms from observation of the actual process, and 3) we have certain modeling procedures, by which we bridge the gap between these two previous areas. The usefulness of our scientific knowledge depends critically upon this last item. In all our following remarks we shall consider only those problems of drilling and the disengagement of rock in which the rock behavior is essentially brittle. Let us start by examining some of the problems of constructing an even moderately detailed theoretical model of the drilling process in the small. The prospects of any near-term success in that direction seem extremely meagre; nor is it clear that any great advancement in the practical art of drilling is even likely to result from the construction of such a detailed model. In polycrystalline Zircaloy-2 the orientation of zirconium hydride precipitates is influenced by an applied stress during hydride precipitation; hydride platelets are oriented nearly parallel to a compres-sive stress and perpendicular to a tensile tress. 1,2 A similar effect has been observed in the Ti-H system, where precipitation of the low-density hydride platelets occurred on habit planes made energetically favorable by the application of stress. 3 Recently, stress activation of hydride habit planes in zirconium and Zircaloy-4 was also demonstrated. The hydrides precipitated on {101l), {112l} and (2131) planes in both zirconium and Zircaloy-4; however, no platelets were found near the prism-plane positions in the Zircaloy-4 samples. Investigations at the Savannah River Laboratory, using polycrystalline Zirc_aloy-2 samples, have confirmed the (101l) and (1121) habit planes but also showed that the prism planes were active hydride habit planes. Using single-surface stereographic analysis and back-reflection Laue techniques, most of the previously reported habit planes for a zirconium were observed.4"1 and one additional plane, the (1013) plane, was noted, Table I. All the habit planes observed had the form (101l) or { 112l) indicating that these planes are the habit planes for hydride precipitation in poly-crystalline Zircaloy-2. The specimens used in these studies were cut from large-grained weld areas of seam-welded tubing and were hydrided in either a static steam autoclave at 400°C and 1500 psig or in a modified Sieverts apparatus at 400°C.

METALLURGISTS - or at least metals - have been of central importance in most of the inventions that have shaped the course of man's history. From the first Bronze Age tools to the iron armor of the Roman soldier, the cannon, cast type for printing, the steam engine, the electric motor and modern electronic devices, technological progress has revolved around some particular property or comb nation of properties selected from the metallurgist's repertory. The recent utilization of the energy of the atomic nucleus (currently for military purposes alone but with great constructive implications for the future) is no exception to this, although the use of uranium and plutonium in metallic form is of secondary importance, since the significant properties are those of the nucleus and not of the electrons responsible for metallic behavior. THE METALLURGIST AND ATOMIC ENERGY The metallurgist has a role of central importance to play in the future development of atomic energy. Not only must he make and shape the fissionable materials themselves, but he must also develop auxiliary materials to withstand the extreme conditions imposed on nuclear reactor components by the high heat-transfer rates needed for efficient utilization of the fuel and by the perplexing but interesting effects of radiation on the structure and properties of materials. It is doubtful if there is currently any other field potentially more rewarding to a young metallurgist. In order to find an empirical relation between a quantity F and (m) independent variables or factors, each of which take (n) different values or levels, it is necessary to conduct nm different experiments (all possible combinations of the factors), each of which has to be repeated a few times (usually five) due to the scattering of the data. The total number of such experiments is very large, thus for example, when m = 4 and n = 5, it is equal to 5.54 = 3125; and very rarely is it possible to conduct such a number of experiments. Various possible methods of planning partial experiments are illustrated in Fig. 1. Each method shows a large combinative square consisting of five columns and five rows of middle squares, each of which, in turn, is further divided into five columns and five rows of cells. Such a partition corresponds to a plan of an experiment with four factors, each of which takes five different levels. The blackened cells indicate the combination of factors in a partial experiment. The total number of experiments is reduced on the basis of the following considerations: a) The effect of only a few levels of some factors is studied (Fig. la). Such an investigation gives no information on the effect of some factors, therefore it cannot be accepted as satisfactory; b) By reducing the number of levels of each factor; in such a case it is not possible to obtain an empirical relationship, but only whether some factors have an effect. This is evidently inadequate;

The rapid increase in cost of discovering new orebodies by churn drilling in the Tri-State district has led to some attempts to lessen the expense by using geophysical methods. Electrical prospecting was tried three or four years ago, but no successful results were recorded. In 1926, the Federal Mining and Smelting Co. engaged the North American Exploration Co., of Houston, Texas, to make some tests with the torsion balance. At first, it was thought that the most favorable conditions for discovery of ore deposits with the torsion balance would be in locations where the ore was known to occur at rather shallow depths, therefore the first trial was made at Ducnweg, east of Joplin, where some zinc ore had been developed at a depth of 130 ft. The gravity gradients at 61 stations on a tract of about seventeen acres indicated plainly one large zone of maximum gravity and a smaller narrow zone of minimum gravity. Fourteen churn-drill holes, half of which struck ore, show that all the ore found was located outside the zones of maximum and minimum gravity. In the zone of maximum gravity the limestone beds were closest to the surface, and the first chert beds encountered were at the greatest depth. The results (shown in Table 1) indicated that the gravity of the limestone was greater than the gravity of the fractured chert together with its orebodies, and probably also greater than the bouldery soil and clay on top of the limestone. No one who knows the conditions of altitude, difficulty of access, shortness of working-season, etc., under which the work of the U. S. Geological Survey in the Rocky Mountains is carried on, can fail to be impressed with the magnitude and accuracy of the results obtained. Yet, in the necessarily brief time given to any one district, maily minor features must remain unregistered. The purpose of this paper is merely to place on record observations, made during nearly eighteen years, of local phenomena in themselves unimportant, which, however, if collated with similar memoranda from neighboring regions, may lead to something of value. The Telluride quadrangle in southwest Colorado is a tract of fifteen geographical minutes on a side, the NW. corner of which is in Long. 108º W., Lat. 38º N. Topographically it is essentially a lofty horseshoe, some of the peaks of which rise more than 14,000 ft. above tide, the interior (with an average altitude of 9000 ft.) being the eastern edge of the rolling Colorado-Utah plateau, and, in its turn, deeply cut by the canons of the San Miguel river and its tributaries. The range-summits are mainly igneous rocks, partly intrusive (such as massive " stocks" and laccolites, left bare by superior erosion), but mostly bedded volcanics of an average vertical thickness of 3500 ft., which change with changing height from andesite to rhyolite. The lowest series of these volcanic rocks, known as the San Juan formation, lies conformably upon the sedimentary San Miguel conglomerate, which dips gently east., and is attributed provisionally to the

INTRODUCTION It is recognized that, for a variety of reasons, some companies in the mineral industry today are by no means cash-rich and, in fact, are reporting a growing proportion of long-term debt in their capital structures. A review of recent balance sheets of small, medium-size, and some larger companies, indicates that a fair number still have substantial positions in cash equivalents such as U.S. government issues and other short-term money market instruments. In part, this paper concerns itself with companies which have sufficient cash and equivalents and/or cash generation to internally finance mining projects or expansions but which, for some reason, choose to borrow funds. Misconceptions which appear to frequently underlie so-called "leveraging" decisions are explored in this paper. Also considered are those circumstances under which any company, including one that is cash-rich, should consider borrowing for a project in an amount beyond what would otherwise be necessary based upon its internal financing ability. I do not 'attempt to cover the raising of equity capital in public markets in this paper. Few phase diagrams of alloys composed of two transition metals have been adequately studied, probably because of the high melting points involved. Transition metals are the elements that have inner shells incompletely filled with electrons. They comprise groups lIIa to VIIIa of the periodic table, including more than half of all metals. We have chosen to study two systems whose comparatively low melting points allowed the alloys to be melted in a molybdenum resistance furnace. The nickel-palladium system proved to consist of a simple series of solid solutions, but iron-palladium manifested several remarkable features. The main characteristics of the latter diagram were decisively established, but lack of time prevented precise determination of phase boundaries. The gamma to alpha transformation in this system is unusual and warrants further study. Grigorjewl determined the liquidus and solidus of the iron-palladium system by thermal methods. He found a minimum melting point, but no eutectic. He also found that palladium lowered the gamma to alpha and raised the gamma to delta transformation temperatures of iron, with a complete series of solid solutions existing between gamma iron and palladium. His measurements also indicated a compound or quptbr-lattice near the composition FePda. Jellinghausz found that annealing at 500" C. greatly increased 111 magnetic coercive force of an alloy of composition FePd. X-ray diffraction photographs showed that a tetragonal ordered phase had formed during the anneal. Hocart and Fallot made magnetic measurements over the entire range of composition. SOMEONE has divided mankind into two groups: (1) those who have the willingness and imagination to weigh the future gain over against a present indulgence, and (2) those who cannot do so. The former have self-control, patience, foresight and a capacity for sustained effort. Those having these homely virtues become the, possessors of capital and hence employers of others. Those lacking these qualities and owning no capital must seek it from those of the first class, and therefore are employed by others. The human qualities, which divide men into two classes-employers and employed-are, however, capable of change by education, training, environment and by all agencies which tend to develop character. These words of the economist have stuck in my mind for many years and the more I see of men in my business contacts the more firmly I am convinced of their truth. The earth in some respects resembles its inhabitants. When we stroll over the fields and hills we are impressed by the unorganized masses of sand and rock which make up the ground beneath our feet. When by chance we come upon a bit of mineral matter in crystalline form we are impressed by its beauty and symmetry and probably have it polished and call it a gem. Gems constitute a minute portion of the earth's crust, and those intellectual gems, worthy of polish, who brilliantly reflect the incident rays of education and experience that have fallen upon them are few among the masses of mankind.

Oceanographers are tooling up. Back of the build-up is Navy defense work and private business. Business is dipping toes in the ocean gingerly and not sure whether the motivation is based on logic or intuition. The problem is that new business opportunities in the oceans could explode rather than evolve. The question is when. At stake for earthlings are food supplies, mineral resources, oil and gas, weather forecasting, navigational systems, shore erosion control and sewage disposal, as primary targets. "Twenty years ago, offshore oil seemed a remote possibility for economic exploitation but today it is a reality. It became a reality largely because of the development of practical ocean seismic equipment and drilling platforms. Today the oil industry is looking at submerged-type drilling rigs. Mineral exploration in the sea is more expensive than on land now primarily because familiar land tools are being modified for sub- marine work." These were the ideas expressed by C. G. Welling of Lockheed Missiles & Space Co., at one of the many meetings that have taken place so far this year on development of marine resources. Welling's views indicate the rationale of companies that have already invested in the sea. Many companies, including those in mining, have observers who caution, "go slow." The continental shelfs and even the deep ocean floor represent to the mineral industries the age-old, enigmatic confrontation-is this the time to move? To no other industry, except Defense, are the results of correct timing so vital.

No one of the live subjects of the day, to which the attention of the mining engineer and metallurgist should be turned, is of greater practical interest to him than electricity in its applications to various mechanical, chemical, and metallurgical operations.. The object of this paper is to call the attention of my fellow-members and associates of the Institute to various new, as well as comparatively old, developments in the science and art of electricity which seem to promise results of advantage. Too many of the comparatively old applications have been neglected by the mining engineer, which, if he had given them a place among his appliances, would have assisted him greatly. The telegraph may be noticed as one. Its use is, however, confined to a person having skill in the manipulations of the key, the reading of the alphabet, and familiarity with the sounder. One of the simpler forms—the call-bell—has a range of application far greater as to distance and convenience than the old wire-pull, or the hoarse voice of the windlass-man or the bucket-dumper. A few Leclanche cells, two or more electric bells, and a mile or more of mire judiciously placed will put the superintendent, at his office, in communication with the foremen of his mills and mines, so that by the aid of a code of signals, great advantages may be gained without necessitating a knowledge of the Morse alphabet, or of the mechanical voice of the sounder. THE members of the society are doubtless aware that the production of American Bessemer steel works is constantly increasing ; that the same converters and machinery are doing more work every year. This enlarged output is due to various causes, chiefly the following: 1st. Better organization-better knowledge on the part of both managers and men, of the plant and the process ; of the way to economize the more exhausting labor, and of the arrangement of the details of labor and operations so that they shall not conflict; also, more pluck-a greater willingness to take risks, or, more properly, such an intimate knowledge of the nature and capacities of the refractory tory linings in various stages of disrepair, and the probable be- . havior of the fluid metal at various stages of its treatment, that the precise nature of the risk may be better known, so that the works may be crowded to their full capacity. In the early practice, after getting four or five consecutive heats in a day, the men preferred to "let well enough alone," and to devote the remaining time to preparation for another turn. Now, thirty, and sometimes forty heats are regularly made during the twenty-four hours, day after day, without the frequent occurrence and without the fear of breakdowns or "messes," as the spilling of steel charges was graphically named in Sheffield. 2d. DURING a current program of research on the structure and properties of liquid sodium alloys, the need arose for information on the solubilities as a function of temperature of several B subgroup metals in liquid sodium. In the absence of reliable information in the literature for several of these systems, par- ticularly at temperatures in the range 100° to 300°C, an apparatus was constructed to determine solubilities by a direct melt-sampling technique, followed by wet-chemical analysis for both sodium and the solute metal. The details of the technique have been described previously.' The solubility of indium in liquid sodium was determined at eight temperatures in the range 100° to 270°C. The solubility as a function of temperature is shown on Fig. 1; this represents the liquidus line over this composition range. A cooling curve was plotted after the completion of the sampling and an arrest was observed at 94.9°C which must be interpreted as being the result of a eutectic reaction. By extrapolation of the liquidus to this temperature, the eutectic composition was estimated to be about 0.25 at. pct In. The present estimate of the eutectic temperature and composition are in good agreement with the values of 96.0° to 96.2°C and between 0.28 and 0.45 at. pct In, respectively, which were reported by Heycock and Neville.2 However, no further information on the liquidus of this system at the sodium-rich end could be found in the literature for comparison. THE Anaconda company has never indulged in any employee activities at Butte which might be termed paternalistic, but it has exerted a vast amount of effort in care of its employees during working hours. The reason for this policy is not lack of interest or that the company does not feel the effect of employees' activities while they are "off the job"; it is that the company and the city of Butte have grown up together and, each has been adequate in its own sphere, the company in providing employment at the highest possible wage and the city in providing housing, sanitation, commercial services, medical services, schools, churches, amusements and entertainments. The one exception to this independence between the company and the community is the Butte Water Co., which is a wholly owned sub-sidiary of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. Mention of this relationship is made here because the water supply of such a city as Butte is one of the principal factors in determining the health of the people. Very early in the development of the Anaconda company an adequate and dependable water supply for the operations became necessary, therefore the company took over this important community function. So well has this activity worked out that during the whole period of time covered, in which the company has expanded to become practically the sole mine operator and the community has grown from a small mining camp to the status of a modern city, there has been no shortage of water or any outbreak of water-borne, epidemic disease.

In the history of American mining, so far as I know, there is no cleaner, brighter, or more completely successful mining adventure than that of the United Verde Extension.* It deserves to be placed on record here. The mine is at Jerome, 25 miles northeast of Prescott, in Yavapai county, Arizona. For 30 years before the U.V.X., as it is known to mining men, achieved celebrity, the Jerome district was identified with a copper mine, the United Verde, one of the great mines of the world. The success of this mine, of course, stimulated the search for similar orebodies, or for an extension of those already known, in adjacent ground; but, despite vigorous prospecting, the United Verde remained for many years alone in its glory. The reason for this solitariness was geologic: a fault with a big throw frustrated the effort to trace the ore-zone, thereby causing exploratory work to be both uncertain and costly. Despite these failures to develop other mines in the vicinity, the belief persisted that all the ore was not localized in the United Verde mine, but before we consider the reasons for such a belief we must look at the geologic conditions. The basal rock of the Jerome district is a schist, which has been correlated with the Yavapai formation of the Bradshaw quadrangle. This schist is geologically ancient, for it is of pre-Cambrian age. THE Western phosphate field, virtually ignored for 40 years, has been undergoing a rapid climb to economic importance. Until World War II there seemed to be no reason for developing the phosphate rock region of the Intermountain Empire. But the tremendously increased demand for food production and the needs of many branches of the chemical industry changed all that. Quite suddenly a report made by the U. S. Geological Survey at the turn of the century became important. The survey showed that 60 pet of the nation's phosphate reserves were in the western phosphate field. Simplot Fertilizer Co. was one of the first to become actively interested in the development of the area. In August, 1945 the company began exploration of the Phosphoria Formation on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. The result was the Gay Mine, about 18 miles east of Indian Agency Headquarters at Fort Hall, Idaho, developed to supply high grade phosphate rock for processing into superphosphate fertilizer at the company's Pocatello plant. Six ft of high grade oolitic phosphate rock (ranging from 32.5 to 34.5 pet P2O5) were discovered at the base of the Phosphoria Formation by diamond drilling and dozer trenching. High quality and thickness, plus the fact that the formation lay flat and near the surface made strip and open pit mining possible. In one year of mining, starting June 1946, a total of 53,000 tons of main bed oolitic phosphate rock was hauled to Pocatello for processing into supersulphate. The first year's operation was in

Vanadium has recently joined the growing list of mineral commodities being exploited by surface mining methods. Union Carbide Corp. controls several vanadium deposits in central Arkansas near the city of Hot Springs in Garland County and the community of Magnet in Hot Spring County (Fig. 1). Two open pit mines, located approximately five miles southeast of the city of Hot Springs in the Wilson Springs area, have been developed for production during the past two years. Adjacent to the mining area the company has recently completed a 1,600-ton-per-day (tpd) processing plant to treat the Wilson Springs and Magnet Cove ores (Fig. 2). Although this operation constitutes the largest vanadium mining project in the United States, the open pit mines are of moderate size. A number of small to medium-sized surface mines will be developed during the life of the operation. This chapter describes the methods and practices used to bring these recently discovered vanadium deposits into production. PRELIMINARY EXPLORATION The vanadium potential of the deposits near Hot Springs and Magnet Cove was first investigated by Union Carbide Corp. in 1960. These areas have long been of interest for their varied mineral content and were previously explored by government agencies and private interests for titanium, columbium, molybdenum, and uranium. This field in 1933 continued as in 1932, although to a much less extent, to dominate the drilling and production situation throughout the oil business. The 2466 producers completed in this field during the year are 28 per cent of such wells completed in the United States. The 2556 completions reported in the five counties within which the East Texas field lies are 21 per cent of all such wells reported in the United States. It follows that with such a command of the development situation, every other factor with regard to this field has an important bearing on the entire oil business. As a consequence, the important developments in the East Texas field are the important developments of the year. Very little new productive territory was added to the already known limits of this enormous field. On the other hand, drilling has shown that with a few very minor exceptions this field is a continuous productive area, with a regular outline and no "dry spots" other than that of a single well surrounded by producing wells. Drilling was confined to the already proven limits of the field. This consisted essentially of more adequate coverage of leases by wells, the meeting of required offsets and the drilling of a large number of small tracts which developed from subdivision of larger leases due to court action and other causes. Discussion of the paper of HAROLD EARLE COOK, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 375 to 400. ALBERT SAUVEUR, Cambridge, Mass.-I think we must all agree with Lieutenant-Commander Cook when he says that there is a great deal of room for improvement in the annealing of steel castings and that better results would be attained if the annealing were conducted in closer agreement with scientific requirements. Whether even a carefully annealed steel casting can ever be made the equal of a steel forging of good quality is still a debatable question. Nevertheless, we all realize that very greatly improved results can be attained by careful annealing. Lieutenant-Commander Cook refers to some requirements calling for annealing steel castings above the Ac1 point. He is undoubtedly right where he says that this should be the Ac3 point. Take, for example, a steel casting containing, say, 0.35 per cent. of carbon, having a very coarse structure made up of coarsely crystalline ferrite. If this is heated just above the Ac1 point the ferrite remains, of course, just as it was before, while the pearlite is converted into a solid solution, austenite. Upon cooling, all this austenite is again converted into pearlite, or sorbite, while the coarse structure of the ferrite remains unchanged and the annealing has accomplished very little. It is therefore surprising that the requirement of annealing above the Ac1 point should appear, in these specifications.
