THE effects of oxidation on the flotation behavior of sulphide minerals have been extensively studied,1-3 but no similar study has been made of coals. Coals of bituminous and lower rank undergo atmospheric oxidation during mining and storage, and their degree of oxidizing increases with temperature4,5 and time of exposure.6 The problem of recovering fine oxidized coal from culm piles, rivers, and streams by froth flotation has become increasingly important to the coal industry as well as to those concerned with air and stream pollution. This paper describes the flotation behavior of oxidized and unoxidized coals and carbons in the presence of oily collectors and presents the reagents found effective in the flotation of oxidized coals and carbons. Except where otherwise stated, flotation tests were performed in a 50-g Denver flotation cell. Solid feed for each test was 30 g, and the pulp dilution was kept at 8.5. The -65 mesh coal sample was wetted by agitation with water in the flotation cell for 6 min, then conditioned with a predetermined amount of collector for 2 min, and finally floated with pine oil as frother for 3 min.

This paper is a record of the first of a series of tests on sulfide minerals to be made by the metallurgical department f the University of California. The purpose of the tests here recorded is to determine the action of standard oils, oil mixtures, and addition agents on the flotation of pyrites. The question of the commercial value of pyrite was not considered. Of the many factors affecting flotation, only two-the oil and the other agent used-were made variable. These were standardized both before and after the tests with salt and pure aluminum. We also interchanged the pyrometers. J. W. RICHARDS, So. WYSOR.-In the first installation we were afraid to put in the insulation throughout the hot-blast main for the reasons mentioned in the paper, but we used the insulating brick in two 8-ft. sections in straight lengths of our hot-blast mains. Owing to the high conductivity of the steel shell, the temperatures which were taken on the outside were not representative of the two temperatures resulting from heat flow through the insulating brick. Visitors frequently put the question to Kalgoorlie gold miners; "Why don't you concentrate your mining operations?" A mine may be drawing ore from over a hundred different working places which are spread out over several thousand feet of strike and on many different levels. The answer to this question is that "finished" can rarely be written for a section of the mine. The intricate web of mineralization in faults, shears and fractures is an endless puzzle, each solution opens up new avenues to be explored. After the last ore is taken from a stope, a program of drilling may continue for several weeks on different possibilities. Perhaps no ore is discovered and drilling is abandoned, but it is not unusual for another search to begin later in that same area on a new theory with successful results. Wherever a slightly richer mineralization is found, it is needed to "sweeten" the mill heads. Over seventy years ago gold was discovered in the dry wastes of Western Australia. Rich deposits of alluvial gold were found at first and as these were worked out they led to the discovery of the lode ores, which were leaner and harder to extract.

This paper reviews the chemistry of selenium and its compounds as it applies to the recovery of selenium from electrolytic copper refinery slimes. Based on this chemistry various processes for the extraction and recovery of selenium from refinery slimes are explained and developed. The optimum selenium technology processes is dependent upon many factors including copper refinery location, environmental and regulatory conditions, local markets for selenium or selenium chemicals, and other plant processes. For this reason there is no one best process but rather a variety of useful processes for winning selenium. Those which have demonstrated consistent utility in both ease of recovery and reliability are discussed in more detail. Recovery of selenium by Doré furnacing of slimes is the topic of a separate paper. The companies that have developed selenium extraction technology are not being cited in this paper for the following reasons: o Their current technology may be different o The actual inventor of a process is difficult to credit since many different organizations have pursued parallel inquiries in developing better processes. Finally, some selenium extraction processes have been omitted; not because they are unworthy of consideration but rather due to limitations of space.

INTRODUCTION A GREAT DEAL of attention has recently been given to the metallurgy of zinc, and much of that which has been said and written on this subject has been in the nature of a criticism. For instance, we are quite accustomed to hearing it said that the metallurgy of zinc has stood still, that it is antiquated, out of date, etc. We are, however, inclined to agree With George C. Stone1 When he says that, although there have been no such spectacular and radical changes as Were worked in the metallurgy of copper and iron by the introduction of converters, there has nevertheless been a decided and marked progress in the metallurgy of zinc, and especially during recent years. However, it must be admitted that, due to the fact that the chemistry of zinc is so different from that of the other metals, the retort process is the only process by which zinc is produced commercially; and, moreover, that losses which occur in the zinc industry-that is, in the mining, milling, and smelting of zinc ore-are very great, for it is stated' that probably less than 50 per cent. of the zinc mined, even

Resident Instruction: The character of an institution, the varying demands made upon it, its geographical location, its own internal organization, all are factors that predispose against rigid standards, curriculum-making, research programs, and extension services. Mineral industries educators must keep in mind that the under- graduate is the core of the college, a philosophy that implies a set of inviolable principles.1 They will want to turn out graduates with overwhelming talent in their field, together with incorruptible ethics, prepared to deal with people, as well as with theories and things. Curriculum-making is a popular educational pastime. No course makes or breaks a curriculum. The particular qualifications and interests of individual students must find expression. However, selection must be made under guidance so that the student's individual needs are realized. In this way, specialization can be introduced into curricula previously conceived to be of general science or engineering nature only. In its essence, formal education is society's endeavor to put old heads on young shoulders, to implant the experience of centuries in the youthful generation. THE Liberty Bell cyanide precipitate is unique in that it is apt to vary widely in composition in the course of very short, periods of time, and a method of refining and melting that would prove highly satisfactory at one cleanup would yield almost an hopeless "mess" it a second. Table I gives a general conception of the wide range in grade and composition of those raw precipitates. It is evident that no one standard flux could be expected to produce a high-grade bullion with such a widely variable precipitate, and that any method of treatment with acid requires most careful consideration. Refining by Acids Naturally, our first efforts to improve our precipitates were directed along the lines of acid treatment. Table II embodies the results of careful sampling and analysis of one cleanup at the time when wet refining reached its maximum development at this mill. We have now discarded all methods of wet refining, successfully replacing them by amore scientific method of flux calculation described herein, but it is believed that a general description of this wet refining is warranted as it throws some interesting side lights on acid refining in general.

The general drift of the discussion as to the relative merits of pressure- and exhaust-fans has resulted, if we may judge from the prevailing practice, largely in favor of the latter. The subject has been hitherto treated, however, with special reference to highly gaseous mines, the effect of the form of ventilation upon dust-explosions having been too little considered. Even in mines containing practically no gas, dust-explosions may occur; and if, as I believe, pressure-fans are to be preferred for their effect upon dust, it may be worth while to reopen the debate, and to challenge the advisability of exhaust-ventilation under certain conditions. There are several forms of colliery-ventilation, which may be described as follows: Plain or simple pressure-ventilation, in which the fan acts as a pressure-fan, and the movement of coal is unobstructed at the surface by doors or equivalent devices in drifts or shafts, the traveling and haulage. thus being in the return-current. Plain exhaust-ventilation, in which the fan acts as an exhaust-fan, the movement of coal being likewise unobstructed at the surface, and the traveling and haulage being in the intake.

The unstable metal market during 1949, with resulting lower metal prices, has focused every mine operator's attention on the problem of reducing operating costs. Improvement in mining methods, use of modern mechanical mining equipment, and increasing the efficiency of the labor force are the tools with which we will have to work. Careful planning is necessary to coordinate all phases so that no one phase is overdone. A mine may become over-mechanized if, for instance, capital charges against new equipment exceed the savings in labor costs, or where a large enough tonnage is not produced. The cooperation of labor is essential to any mechanization program. There have been too many instances where mechanization and improvements have done nothing more than make up for a decrease in labor efficiency, thus bringing the production of labor back to its old standard. The operator has gained little and labor has gained only a "softer job." In any mechanization program there are gains to be had by both the operator and labor. By the efficient application of modern equipment and improved mining methods the operator should gain by decreased costs, and labor may profit by receiving a share of these decreased costs.

The Basic Oxygen Process shop at Gary Works is a three vessel shop tapping 220 ton heats. The larger portion of the heats are teemed into ingot molds with the remaining heats being continuously cast in a single strand continuous slab caster. Ingot production includes a wide range of carbon, alloy, and high-strength steels in many ingot sizes for bar, structural, plate and sheet and tin products. Individual ingot weights vary with the number of ingots per heat ranging from a high of 48 to a low of five. Caster production is primarily Riband, a proprietary low carbon grade for sheet and tin applications developed by United States Steel for continuous casting; some Riband steel is vacuum degassed prior to casting. Maintaining a satisfactory level of ladle performance on both ingot and caster heats with a high production rate and widely varied product mix is a demanding and exacting job requiring the best of equipment, materials, and, most importantly, personnel. The improving trend in ladle performance in the No. 1 BOP shop at Gary is due to a combination of factors, which will be described in the following presentation.

The sands of Snake River, Idaho, have long been known to contain gold. They were worked by some of the first prospectors who came to Idaho, and on the banks still stand the ruins of camps abandoned for years. There are almost always prospectors searching for gold during the season of low water, and it is not an infrequent thing to find a miner of the old type actually panning the sand, or the prospect-hole which he has just left. There is more or less mystery about these miners and their methods of finding the spots where they work. They are always subjects of much speculation to the ordinary traveller. The rich discoveries are, for the best of reasons, concealed until the claims can be taken up. It is difficult to find a place where there are no prospects, but the " colors " are so very fine that they do not offer much inducement to enterprise. The California miner usually values a color at from 5 to 10 cents, often the latter; while on Snake River it would take 100 colors, or even more, to make that amount.

THE two earlier papers in this series1,2 presented data on the rate of diffusion of carbon and of manganese in gamma iron. Apart from their scientific interest, these [] data are needed chiefly in order to treat data on carburization, on the rate of formation of pearlite, and on the rate of austenizing in a quantitative way. 1,2,9,10 In the present investigation rates of diffusion of nickel in -?-Fe over wide temperature and concentration ranges have been determined, and the effects of carbon, of impurities, and of grain size on these rates have been studied. Claussen,3 using the data of Fry,4 has calculated the diffusion coefficient of nickel [ ] in -?-Fe as 9.2 X 10-11 sq. cm. per sec. at 1200T., but had no data from which to calculate the variation of D with concentration, temperature, and percentage of carbon. METHOD AND MATERIALS Method.-Nickel was diffused along the axis of a cylindrical specimen across a concentration gradient, concentration-penetration curves were determined and D values calculated from Grube or Matano solutions.5 Details of the method are given

THE art of electric smelting came with the turn of the present century and owes its existence to the introduction of alter-nating current, which found its first wide use in the establishment of the great power plants at Niagara Falls, N, Y. Prior to that time current was largely direct. The fur-naces were electrolytic in nature and found their first metallurgical use in the produc-tion of aluminum, and this process still prevails. The normal production of pig iron up to that time was carried on in blast furnaces in which charcoal, coke and anthracite were used as the fuel. This new electric process called for sufficient carbonaceous material to reduce the oxides and impregnate the pig iron with sufficient carbon, but the remainder of the energy was to be supplied by electric power. The chemical reactions are essentially the same in electric smelting as obtains in the older blast furnace. All of these data are so well known in both methods as to need no discussion at this time, for they can be found in scientific publications and books written during the first two decades of this century.

THE following discussion was suggested by an experiment of Mr. Krom, the manufacturer of air-jigs, to illustrate the superiority of air over water as a medium of concentration. The paper is written in the interest of no system of concentration, but simply to test the experiment, and, perchance, to add something to the general fund of information on the subject. To speak of testing an experiment by a theoretical discussion, may seem a misuse of terms, but the theories concerning falling bodies and the resistance of fluids are pretty well crystallized into laws, which may properly be used to show where experiments which seem to refute them were improperly performed, and that instead of refitting they only corroborate. It is well known that a sphere of galena 1/8 inch in diameter, and a sphere of quartz 1/2 inch in diameter, are equal falling in water ; that is, these two spheres, being placed together in a column of water at rest or in motion, will practically remain together, falling or rising together, or remaining in suspension. INTRODUCTION Fineness is one of the main characteristics of powders and this parameter is the object of several definitions based on criteria connected with their uses as well as their determination methods. In trying to obtain the best reaction surface, fineness is characterized by the determination of the specific surface, but in other cases, particle size analysis is used. These two main methods are not, in fact, entirely independent and their complementary nature provides information concerning the morphology of the particles. In the case of a product formed by isodimensional spheres, the relationship between the specific surface and the diameter is well known: [S = 6 spd] where p is the specific weight of the material and d the diameter of the spheres. With no monodimensional spheres, but rather a granulometric distribution whose occurrences follow a mathematical law (1), the relationship is more complicated. The relationship between the specific surface measured by gas adsorption and the data of the particle size analysis is much more difficult to predict in the case of asymmetric porous particles, whose particle size distribution curves do not correspond to a known statistical law.

So far as the writer is aware, the discussion has invariably centered around the classification of underground mining methods, and only superficial attention has been directed to surface methods. Volume 72, page 10, of the Institute Transactions, presents such a classification, sponsored by the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute. A similar classification by Prof. Hugh P. Nicholson appeared in Mining and Metallurgy in October, 1934. The two classifications are quite different in their treatment of underground methods but are identical in classifying surface methods, although Professor Nicholson does suggest possible further divisions for surface mining and admits that such subdivision is more difficult than appears at first. It is safe to assert that in cities generally, the fuel of the future for all domestic, as well as for most manufacturing and metallurgical purposes, will be gaseous fuel. The immense advantages which gas possesses in facility and cheapness of distribution, cleanliness, and economy of manipulation, and the facilities which it offers for utilizing in almost all cases a much higher percentage of the total quantity of heat produced, than it is possible to do with any kind of solid fuel, are facts which will vastly more than compensate for the comparatively small loss of heating power, which will be found necessary in the turning of the solid fuel into gas upon a large scale, and which, in the bpinion of the writer, will, at no distant day, command attention, and will ultimately result in a revolution in our use of fuel. THOUGH the rapid revival of the copper market in the early twenties solved the most serious of the company's immediate postwar difficulties, a much more fundamental, long-range problem still remained. Mining is not like farming: the earth does not bring forth a new crop of gold, silver, lead, zinc, oil, or copper at every harvest time. Metal taken from the ground does not spring up again from the old roots like perennial flowers in a garden, or find renewal in freshly sown seed. No ore body, whatever its size or richness, is too big or too rich to escape ultimate exhaustion. When the war closed in 1918, Phelps Dodge had been mining copper from Bisbee, Morenci, and Nacozari over periods varying in length from ten to nearly forty years. During much of that time, the company's production had run from fifty million to as high as two hundred million pounds a year. Even the greatest of mines had to respond in time to such a drain.
