So far as the elementary composition of petroleum is known, it may be briefly stated. Petroleum consists principally of a few series of hydrocarbons, with admixtures of sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen derivatives in comparatively minute proportions, which may be regarded as impurities to be removed in the preparation of commercial products. But as each series is represented by many homologs, in the aggregate, crude petroleum is an extremely complex mixture of hydrocarbons and their derivatives. In part, these hydrocarbons individually conform in structure to the system of synthetic hydrocarbons whose structure is well defined and represented by the typical series CnH2n, + 2, C.H2n, the series CnH2n,-2, CnH2,-a, the members of which have not been sufficiently studied to establish their structure, and the series CnHz,e composed of the aromatic group, benzene and its homologs. Hydrocarbons of greater density contained in the portions of petroleum that cannot be distilled without decomposition doubtless have less hydrogen than is represented by these formulas. Since to every hydrocarbon there is a definite temperature, even in vacuum, at which its constituent carbon and hydrogen atoms fall apart, and since for the heavier bodies this temperature is not much above 360" C. in vacuum, it is evident that some other method than distillation must be devised for their separation if anything further is to be learned concerning their individual constitution. Classification of Petroleums There is such a wide variation in the composition of petroleum from Merent fields, it would seem possible to make a classification on this basis were it not that no single variety is entirely free from hydrocarbons contained in others. Such a classification has been suggested of the exceptionally pure Pennsylvania petroleum, the sulfur oil from Trenton limestone and other sources, the California oil with its large amount of nitrogen (quinoline) derivatives, and the Russian oil, composed chiefly of the naphthene hydrocarbons.' The influence of temperature and composition on the viscosity of high-purity liquid metals and alloys of the Pb-Sn and Sb-Cd systems was investigated by the logarithmic-decrement method. The variation of viscosity with temperature above the liquidus followed the equation: n = AeE/RT No large increase in viscosity was found just before normal freezing of any of the metals or alloys investigated. Certain alloys, supercooled below their stable liquidus, however, did show a marked increase in viscosity. Experimental activation energies for viscosity were determined for the metals investigated. Liquid-metal density values were obtained by a modified Joeger's method. IK an investigation of the properties of molten metals, the study of viscosity as a suitable means for studying the physical nature of the metallic liquid state has been utilized. Although interest in the relationship of the liquid to the solid-metal state holds promise of broadening the knowledge of metals in general, much information that is available regarding the influence of temperature and composition on viscosity, especially near the freezing point, is still controversial. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of recent work on this subject. Although interest in factors influencing the fluid behavior of metals and alloys has arisen from theoretical as well as applied studies of liquid-metal properties, the development of a comprehensive theory of the mechanism of viscosity has been handicapped because so little is known about the liquid state. Several theories of viscosity have been proposed and among the more recent are those of Andrade,1 Bernal,2 Frenkel,3 Eyring,4 and Gutmann and Simmons.5 Athough these contributions have helped to establish a basis of approach for studying the nature of viscosity, the fundamental aspects of the variation of viscosity with alloy composition have, in general, been neglected. ONLY the acute phase of the smelter fume problem is new. The problem itself is older than the Christian era. While both lead and copper were mined and crudely smelted ; on: 3,000 years ago, it was not until the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and the British Isles, which occurred but shortly before the beginning of the Christian era, that there was any evidence of smelting operations on a scale sufficiently large to permit a fume problem. Around Huelva, Spain, are found more than 30 million tons of slag from lead smelting conducted there by the Romans. Pliny tells us that more than 20,000 slaves were employed in the Iberian mines. Extensive mining and smelting by the Romans in England and Wales were coincident with the Iberian proceedings. These metallurgical operations were upon a sufficiently large scale to produce marked results both upon the surrounding country and the smelter workers, but, as they were those of a conqueror upon conquered soil, conducted by slaves, imperial Rome failed to recognize that such a thing as a smoke problem did or could arise, and whatever fume question there may have been at that .time remained a question only to those who had no chance to answer any phase of it. The smelting operations of the Romans extended over about 400 years, and little is "recorded of lead and copper smelting from that time until the 16th century. From the revival beginning at this period up to the present century, the growth of smelting has been comparatively gradual. In Great Britain, smelting was conducted almost wholly in localities where metallurgical operations were of paramount importance, and the communities that grew up in smelter localities were due to and dependent upon the mines and smelters. This fact had much to do with the comparative freedom of British smelting from burdensome fume litigation and legislation. The administration of industrial organization today embraces more than the cost of production and selling prices. Competition is deeper seated than mechanical devices, overhead charges, and a shrewd manipulation of the markets. Despite the " down-to-the-minute " equipment and the "last word in organization," it is quite evident that "capacity production" will be an unknown quantity until the workman is considered as a producer, in relation to his home, as he is now considered in relation to industry. Whether or not a man shall do an honest day's work is as much a psychological condition as it is a matter of physical strength or skill. His attitude toward his work each morning is determined, to a large degree, by the environment of his home. Whether this attitude, good or bad, obtains the day through will depend entirely upon the one fact as to whether the corporation which employs him does or does not differentiate between the mechanical factor and the human factor in industry. To be more specific, sociological work, under whatever name, should be of such a character as to influence the life of a workman in such a manner as to establish a cooperative interest in his work, foster within him a spirit of contentment in his home, lead him so to employ his leisure time that he will not lower his efficiency as a workman, destroy his domestic happiness, or endanger his standing in the community as a citizen. While no fixed rules of procedure can well be formulated for the development of the work, yet definite lines of activities will readily present themselves as applicable to the individual needs of a community. Hard as the Revett quartzite are conditions governing the deep mines of the Coeur d'Al6ne. In fourscore years of mining, heat and pressure have been the rewards of preseverance. Such obstacles are the natural concommitant to search for ore at depth. But high cost and shortage of miners is a creeping frustration of the decade. These grim observations were made on a trip to the mines of the Coeur d'Al6ne in the first week of May. But the bouncy optimism of competent mining engineers and geologists overrides by far the tough conditions. This is the story of what they are doing. I think they are setting the stage for the wonder mines of tomorrow. I didn't meet all the people or see all the mines, so there are unfortunate gaps in the story. Then too, sometimes the muck and water blotched my notes, or I couldn't write fast enough or I was too tired. No matter. There is much to tell and, because it is basically a human story, I am flouting the rules of technical journalism and couching it in the neglected "I" person. First then, a little history . . . .

Tsumeb has added a chapter to its absorbing history with the beginning of copper smelting operations this month. This development will be followed shortly by another one when lead smelting and refining plants go on the line next year. In our own milieu these events would be common- place enough (although a new lead smelter certainly would be cause for wonder), but in the sparsely settled remote regions of northern South West Africa they are a dramatic industrial expansion. They are also, however, a sound businesslike extension of policies which have marked the tenure of Tsumeb Corp. Ltd. The historical data given in Table I are a drab listing of factual bones without the corporeal splendor which should surround the denouement of the Tsumeb bonanza. When Sir Francis Galton traversed the country, his was an expedition which was in keeping with the then blooming era of heroic explorations. The Otavi highlands in the interior were unexplored and the reception of the natives uncertain. While the exploratory work was in progress during the turn of the century the Hottentots and Hereros were successively in open bloody rebellion. The suppression of these uprisings, particularly the Hereros, by German soldiers so decimated the tribes that a labor shortage ensued for many years, hampering the development of the colony. To these troubles may be added difficulties In obtaining mining supplies. However, there should have been no shortage of meat from wild game judging by conditions prevailing even today.

JAMES E. HOWARD,* Washington, D. C. (written discussion?). -Mr. Comstock, in his classification of the possible causes of transverse fissures, has not quite caught the point of view of the writer. It appears, following the trend of thought in Mr. Comstock's paper, that three groups instead of two might bee enumerated, namely: Fatigue of the steel, quality or, preferably, grade of steel, and mill practice. All steels are liable to failure by fatigue. Stresses that are capable of causing fatigue fractures are modified in their magnitude by the grade of steel acted upon. Mill practice is a term having a very wide meaning and in its relations to the development of transverse fissures has been used with such vagueness as to include many known factors and some that are unknown in the arts. According to the grade of steel employed, fatigue fractures may be accomplished by loads of greater or less magnitude, hence there is a relation between quality, or grade, of steel and the display of fatigue fractures. Mill practice of such an order as to affect the formation of transverse fissures must be shown to exert an influence on the ability of the steel to endure repeated stresses. Different grades of steel are selected for different purposes. Steel employed for fire-box purposes is of different grade from that used for cutting tools; although each grade is suitable for its purpose, and therefore of good quality. It is conceivable that a demand might be made for steel of physical properties in excess of those of any known grade. Under such a demand, impossible of' fulfillment, it would not be proper to refer to the steels as being deficient in quality; to do so would be a failure to recognize that all steels have their limitations in strength. Service conditions peculiar to rails admit of successive advance until the conditions can no longer-be met. The failure of a large number of rails from one type of failure, when all known means of averting the failure have been employed without success, is sufficient evidence that the end is close at hand. Iron rails, for a time, successfully met the requirements of railway service but weight of equipment, motive power, and rolling stock were increased, necessitating the use of steel. The early steel rails enjoyed the reputation of being of excellent quality, although: neither chemically nor structurally would they be so regarded ,lit the present time. Much has been said and written about uneconomic and evil marketing practices in the oil industry, including such factors as loaning of equipment, price cutting and secret prices, commercial discounts, abuses of credit cards and coupon books, and so forth. It is not my purpose here to add to the discussion of those problems, but rather to attempt a discussion of some of the more basic factors in the general distribution economies of the industry. The economics of distribution in the oil industry cannot be regarded apart from the general economics of the industry as a whole. The attempt to regard them as separate has led many people into the fallacy of believing that the responsibility for the apparent evils in the marketing end of the business lay entirely at the door of the marketing end. Such a view fails to take cognizance of many underlying factors; we can only expect to understand the distribution economics of the industry if we understand its general economics. We must realize also that the oil industry today is essentially the gasoline industry. The oil industry may be said to have begun about 60 years ago. At the outset it was concerned chiefly with the manufacture and sale of kerosene, lubricating oils and greases. Gasoline was then a most obnoxious by-product. The early oil-marketing company was engaged almost exclusively in refining and marketing—it did not concern itself with production but bore the relation to it merely of a purchaser. It may be said that the urge of marketing development in those days, therefore, came from the refining and marketing end of the business. The raw material had not yet begun to exert its enormous pressure, nor had the producer of crude oil acquired a direct interest in the sale of the ultimate finished products. Since then great changes have taken place. With the development of the automobile came a vast new demand for the raw material from which gasoline could be made. No longer could the refining and marketing companies be indifferent to the source of that raw material, particularly in view of the pessimistic outlook then presented as to the probable quantity of oil in existence. TITANIUM has been estimated to comprise about 0.65 per cent of the earth's crust and ranks fourth in abundance among the metallic elements suitable for engineering uses. In spite of this, applications of titanium for structural purposes have not as yet been developed. Its commercial exploitation has been largely confined to the chemical industries and the production of paints and pigments; no doubt because of the difficulties that lie in the way of preparing the pure ductile metal. Published reports, however, indicate that ductile titanium can be prepared and possesses some unique properties. This, together with the occurrence in this country of several important titaniferous deposits, has led the Bureau of Mines to investigate processes for the production of metallic titanium, 'methods required for its fabrication, and the properties that may be produced in this interesting metal. METHODS OF PREPARING METALLIC TITANIUM Many early investigators claimed to have isolated metallic titanium; but in the light of present knowledge, it seems that they really had produced various mixtures of carbides and nitrides that have a metallic appearance but are brittle, hard, and unworkable. The first metallic titanium pure enough to be malleable when cold was produced by Hunter1 in the early part of the twentieth century. Kroll,2 van Arkel,3 and Fast,4 subsequently confirmed the facts that pure titanium is a ductile metal and that small amounts of impurities were responsible for previous reports of brittleness. When heated, titanium reacts chemically with various gases, such as hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen; if the volume of gas thus absorbed is too great, the metal becomes brittle and unworkable. The principal difficulty in making ductile titanium is prevention of such contamination, and the success of a given process may be judged by the completeness with which it solves this difficulty in a practical manner. Of the gases mentioned, hydrogen is the least objectionable, since its absorption by the metal is completely reversible and, although dimensional changes occur and absorption of hydrogen embrittles the metal, the gas may be removed readily by heating in a high vacuum for a short time. On the other hand, the absorption of oxygen or nitrogen results in the formation of permanent 'solid solutions of the oxide and nitride, which cannot be decomposed by the strongest reducing agents2 with sufficient completeness to restore the inherent ductility of the metal. In the Bosquejo Geoldgico de Mexico, published in 1897 by the Secretaria de Fomento as Nos. 4, 5 and 6 of the Boletin del Institute Geologico de Mexico, the Director, Jose C. Aguilera, after a detailed account of the geological observations made by himself and his assistants on their several trips through the various districts of the Republic, gives in Part 2 a synopsis of the geology of Mexico, describing . al1 the formations recognized, the rocks comprised in them, their geographical distribution, disturbances, principal eruptions and economic features, as explanatory of the Geological Map of Mexico. In Part 3 Prof. Ordonez describes many of the interesting eruptive rocks of Mexico." This work brings together in a very satisfactory way about all of the published results of geological investigations in Mexico; and although the determinations of the authors with reference to some of the sedimentary deposits are very different from those of other writers, they seem to be based upon good paleontological grounds in each instance. From the map and the text of this paper it appears that the condition of knowledge in regard to the geology of the State of Sonora, at the time of its publication, was about as follows: The western portion of the State, lying between the coast line of the Gulf of California and the foot-hills of the Sierra Madre mountains, is largely Quaternary, interrupted by areas of Azoic rocks and of later eruptives, with two or three limited exposures of limestones of the Cretaceous; while the eastern or

THE ASSAY FOR COPPER. SOMEONE some time ago remarked that some chemists still insist on telling us how to determine copper by the electrolytic method. The. writer must confess that he believes that everything is not known definitely as yet as to how the exact amount of copper is determined in such material as purest commercial electrolytic copper. Some of us are not yet convinced that the pure copper atom is at all times deposited from an acid solution and that no oxygen or hydrogen will, under certain conditions, accompany it. Difficulties with impurer material are frequent, but erroneous results are not always apparent, since these do not speak so readily for themselves as those in the first case. By this is meant that if a chemist finds 100 per cent. of copper in electrolytic copper it is pretty certain that he perceives the result to be wrong, while if he finds 0.1 per cent. of copper too much in a very impure material he is far more likely to be unconscious of his error. These, in a wide experience, are frequent happenings and the writer has always looked with interest to publications on this subject. In turn, he :feels justified in giving to others a few of his own observations. Up to a few years ago there were two methods of electrolytic copper assay in technical use, which had in common, that the amount of copper deposited on the cathode did not exceed 2 g., and they differed in that, for the one a large sample 1 (20 to 80 g.) was taken from the general sample by a splitting device, dissolved, and from the solution a small portion (to contain 1 or 2, g. of copper) measured out for the electrolytic deposition; in the other Method the copper was determined, generally in 1-g. portions of the separated coarse and fine portions of the sample, all of which passed -a 16 or 20-mesh screen, being accomplished by a 40-mesh screen,

At the time flotation appeared upon the metallurgical horizon in Arizona, the writer, under the direction of Dr. Ricketts, was engaged in remodeling and enlarging the No. 6 Concentration Plant of the Arizona Copper Co. at Morenci, and the work had been in progress nearly a year before the Inspiration experiments with flotation had disclosed the revolution in concentration that was at that time impending. The simplified flow sheet worked out for the remodeling of the Morenci plant had been based upon the removal of the freed metal in a minimum number of stages by treatment upon tables equipped with Butchart riffles, the latter being adapted to accomplish both classification of feed and removal of the metal at one operation, substantially as described in my previous paper.l The scheme of treatment for the slime was based upon the well-known fact that after copper sulphides, such as chalcocite and chalcopy-rite, etc., are reduced to a certain extremely fine state of comminution they are definitely beyond the reach of separation upon any of the concentrating devices then known. By using drag-belt classifiers (which served as conveyors as well as separators), the overflow ,would be of the usual "slimes" class. Experiment had shown that when these drag-belt overflows were properly diluted (that is, to about 5 to 7 per cent. solids in the feed under treatment) the very fine sand, and especially the very fine but still granular sulphide particles, would, if given a short distance to fall, quickly settle out in prime condition to yield an excellent recovery on vanners; a further valuable feature would be that the very fine non-separable final overflow tonnage might be discharged direct to tailing, thus conserving space requirements so as to permit within the old building, without embarrassment, the increase of capacity required. Inflammability and crossing point apparatus were used to study the influence of increasing amounts oi such inerts as ash, fly-ash, pyrite, limestone and Portland cement with several pulverized bituminous coals. The results indicate that it requires large proportions of inerts to substantially suppress the ease of ignition. The ignition phase of the combustion of solid fuels has been under study periodically since 1900. With the advent of pulverized coal firing some 60 years ago, a technique now dominating the coal utilization field, the ignitibility characteristics have become increasingly important. Much of the early work was directed toward the prevention of coal dust explosions and improved mine safety rather than combustion. Many factors affecting ignitibility have been studied and numerous methods devised in an effort to measure the ignition temperature and these have been reviewed by other authors. A recent survey was made by Finney and Spicerl in 1959, so a discussion of previous work will be omitted. Despite these efforts, the initial stage of combustion, termed ignitibility, is still a little understood phenomenon. In fact, no ASTM method has been adopted for the calibration of this illusive property. The Gooseberry Mine is located 38 krn (24 miles) by road east of Reno, 13 km (8 miles) south of Interstate 80. The mine was originally discovered in 1906 and remained in the control of the Martin family of Fresno, who worked the-property with Mexican ranch hands for 68 years. Westcoast took over the property in 1976 from Apco Oil Corporation. During the time the Martins operated the mine, a 305 m (1,000 ft) inclined shaft was sunk with drifts developed on eight levels exceeding a total of 3,000 m (9,000 ft) in length. It is interesting to note that for over one -half century all development ore was stockpiled. West- coast, the United States mining subsidiary of Home Oil Company Ltd., Calgary, Alberta, completed sinking another vertical shaft to the 396 m (1,300 ft) level. Development work between 122 m and 305 m (400 ft and 1,000 ft) levels has proved the existence of a fine ore body over 300 m (1,000 ft) long. The silver-gold ore grade is fairly consistent in the vertical section, but copper, lead and zinc may show slight increases with depth. Average width of the ore bearing portion of the vein is 2.5 m (8.3 ft). Stoping is by cut-and-fill method. Average silver values within the ore zone have increased from the 152 m (500 ft) level to the 305 m (1,000 ft) level, although the gold values do show some decrease. It is not possible for the geological staff to predict the depth of the ore. However, several years of ore reserves have been proved in the existing mining areas. Important ore minerals are argentite, native gold, and electrum. Trace amounts of galena, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite are associated with the precious metal mineralization. The vein is mainly composed of calcite and quartz. Mine-run underground ore is dumped from the hoisting skip into a coarse ore bin followed by a jaw crusher, an impact crusher, and a 600 mt (650 st) fine ore bin. The mill has a capacity of 317 mt per day (350 st per day). Two-stage grinding is done by a rod mill followed by cyclones with the underflow sent to a ball mill in closed circuit with the cyclones. Cyclone overflow after conditioning receives a primary float in four 1.7 cu m (30 cu ft) cells and a second stage of conditioning ahead of 24 0.8 cu m (30 cu ft) secondary flotation cells. No cleaning stages are used. Flotation tailings are cycloned for a sand-slime separation with the sands used as underground stope fill and the slime portion to tailing dam storage.

AMONG the newer lead smelting and refining plants of the country is that of the United States Metals Refining Co., at Carteret, N. J. Not only is the technical practice here modern and efficient, but exceptional care is taken to assure healthful operating conditions for the employees. One large building houses the entire department, which includes, as its chief units, one reverberatory smelting furnace, one blast furnace, two softening furnaces, one utility reverberatory furnace, two Faber du Faur retorts, five 120-ton kettles, three 60-ton antimouial lead kettles, and one 5-ton kettle for experimental purposes. There is a 10-ton overhead crane in the kettle aisle, which is also used for shipping lead. Other auxiliary equipment is referred to in the outline of operations. AN enthusiastic crowd, cheerfully confident that the upturn in the oil industry has arrived, gathered in Los Angeles on Sept. 29 for a Petroleum Division meeting arranged by the Southern California Section. The assembly room of the California Oil and Gas Association was the place of meeting. H. Norton Johnson was in the chair for the morning session, with about eighty members and guests present. Four papers were presented before lunch and a fifth, on electrical coring, was withdrawn as the work on which it was based is still confidential. Joseph Jensen read his contribution on the "Kettleman Hills Middle Dome Unit Plan" and, as he had an active part in framing the plan, his outline and discussion of it was authoritative and informing. J. H. Woods asked concerning the operation of the casing-head gasolene plant under the plan and was informed that one company would operate the plant and royalties would be paid participating companies

THE making of courses of study and curricula has long held first place as the favorite pastime of educators. As a game, this activity is as fascinating to some as golf or bridge, 'and the golfer's hope of a low score is matched by the teacher's ambition to some day evolve a sequence of studies that shall prove the ideal preparation for a life of maximum service and, profit. There are few in, this gathering who have not tried their skill at this game and still fewer are those who have been long satisfied by the product of their efforts. A curriculum is hardly printed in the college catalog before conditions arise which seem to make changes desirable, and strong will power is needed to maintain the program long enough to give it a fair trial. Metallurgical curricula are not less subject to change than others, 'and; indeed they have seemed, at times, to change more rapidly than other curricula because of the changing 'needs of the industries and the demand that the graduate be trained to meet the new conditions. Metallurgical practice is constantly proving that "time makes ancient good uncouth," and the graduate metallurgist is required to adapt himself to newer and

THE fall meeting of the Petroleum Division, held at Tulsa, Okla., on Oct. 11 to 14, devoted two days to technical sessions and two to field excursions. A representative attendance of 250 to 300 engineers and operating officials engaged in oil production marked the sessions and paid close attention throughout to a notable series of highly technical papers. Restricted as the program was to consideration of production problems only, the time proved too short for discussion or even the presentation of the 20 papers submitted. Much informing and pertinent discussion none the less took place, and the sentiment was general to the effect that the meeting was one of the best ever held by the Division. The meetings were held in the auditorium of the Municipal building and local arrangements were well looked after by the Mid-Continent Section of the Institute and the Oil and Gas Association. The combination of the three organizations served to bring together engineers and operators most usefully. F. Julius Fohs, chairman of the Division, presided at the sessions on Monday. Heggam of the Oil and Gas Association and the Tuesday evening banquet by W. C. Franklin of the same organization.

THE past seven years, and 1937 in particular, have witnessed the return of New Jersey iron mining to a place of importance. Following the World War period, little mining was done for several reasons. The properties were operated by small merchant furnaces whose demand was not sufficiently large to warrant large-scale methods with their attendant low operating costs. Under those conditions, the ore produced could not compete with that from the Great Lakes. However, when on Nov. 1, 1.929, the Alan Wood Steel Co., of Conshohocken, Pa., leased the Scrub Oak and Washington properties at Mine Hill and Oxford respectively, they made radical changes in the mining and milling processes which greatly reduced the cost of production and pointed the way to a renewed interest in mining in New Jersey. The following factors have been advanced as influencing the reopening of New Jersey mines:

GEOLOGISTS have been quick to adopt new methods in locating new oil fields and in finding the extensions, laterally or at depth, of the old fields. For most of these new methods he is indebted to the physicist, the engineer, and the chemist, although he has also drawn from such ordinarily unrelated sciences as bacteriology and protozoölogy. These last-named sciences have been of help in problems dealing with the origin of petroleum and, although not of direct application to oil finding, have furnished evidence of value in learning what oil is made from and what are the natural agencies involved in its formation.
