A drop calorimeter system is described for use in measuring enthalpies to 3600°K. Data are presented for tungsten between 2800" and 3600°K. The enthalpy of tungsten in cal per mole between 2000° and 3600°K can be represented by the equation HºT- Hº298 = - 1.7622 X 103 + 5.7772T + 8.9861 where T is in degrees Kelvin. A tabulation of com -puted values is presented for heat capacity, entropy, and free energy function. A drop calorimeter has been constructed to carry out enthalpy measurements at temperatures to 3600°K. Samples are heated by induction1 and dropped into a commercial adiabatic calorimeter, modified for this purpose. The experimental temperature is limited by the melting point of container materials and compatibility of the container and its contents. Several high-temperature drop calorimeters have been described in the literature1-5 but none has been used at temperatures as high as those in the present work; our measurements of the enthalpy of tungsten range from 2800" to 3600°K. DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT An overall schematic view of the equipment is shown in Fig. 1. Power for the induction coil is supplied by a 25-kw 250 kHz Ther-Monic generator coupled to an iron core RF transformer. The Sample capsule is suspended in the work coil by 10-mil diam tungsten wires which are wrapped around a horizontal 5-mil diam tungsten wire. The horizontal suspension wire is clamped between two massive copper electrodes which are fixed in an x-y motion device that allows adjustment of the position of the heated capsule from outside the vacuum chamber. The copper electrodes are connected by flexible copper straps to a 1250-joule (5 kv, 100 pfarad) condenser bank. When it is desired to release the capsule, the condensers are discharged through the horizontal suspension wire causing it to vaporize rapidly. Very reliable and precise release of the capsule is achieved in this manner. Experiments have shown that no heat correction is required for this discharge energy. As part of the temperature measuring system, two prism holders have been incorporated in the apparatus. The upper prism holder is in the main vacuum chamber itself, whereas the lower one is in a side arm attached to the drop tube below the gate valve. The upper prism is mounted on a rotary vacuum feed-through, and may be moved under a protective shield when not in use. This prevents deposition of vapors on the prism surfaces when temperature measurements are not being made. Similarly, the lower prism is mounted on a push-pull vacuum feed-through, and when not in use may be pulled into its side tube. The prism mountings are fitted with guides and stops so that they may be moved precisely into the desired position. The aim throughout is to minimize the time the prisms are exposed to vapors from the hot samples. At the high temperatures reported in this paper, only the lower prism was used. The upper prism holder in these cases was fitted with an additional radiation shield. By using a prism and viewport, the lower surface of the samples can be observed by an optical pyrometer. The measurements discussed in this paper were obtained with a Leeds and Northrup 8622-C-S series manual pyrometer which is estimated to be accurate to 0.5 pct. Pyrometer calibrations and prism and window corrections were carried out in the conventional manner6 using tungsten strip lamps calibrated by the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, England. Prism corrections were rechecked after each use. All work to date has been done in vacuum, and no measurable change has been observed in the prism correction below -2300°K for the upper prism and below -2800°K for the lower one. The total time of exposure of the prisms is about 50 sec per run. At high temperature, the final temperature reading is corrected by using the final A value for the prism; see Ref. 6 for details of this procedure. The calorimeter is a modified Parr Instrument Co. (Moline, lll.), Series 1230 adiabatic calorimeter with automatic jacket control. Other authors5 have used a similar calorimeter with good results. The calorimeter jacket cover and calorimeter cover are attached to the drop tube which contains a radiation shield. This shield is a gold-plated copper disc which can be operated manually from outside the calorimeter. The receiver is attached below the radiation shield and is lined with tungsten. In a typical experiment, the calorimeter and its jacket water temperatures were adjusted to 0.000°K temperature difference. The sample was allowed to equilibrate in the furnace at the desired temperature for about 20 min. The initial calorimeter temperature was then recorded, the sample dropped, and appropriate shutters closed. After about 3 min, the drop tube and receiver were filled with helium to 60 torr. The final calorimeter temperature was recorded after it had remained constant over a 5-min period. The equilibration time in the calorimeter was about 25 min. Thermistor probes are used to operate a hot and cold water supply system to maintain the jacket temperature equal to the calorimeter temperature. For actual measurements of the calorimeter temperatures, a quartz thermometer was used (Hewlett Packard Dymec Thermometer, Model #2801A). This thermome-

The metals Cd, ,Wg-, Sn, TI, Zn, and Zr reach a peak hardness after a criticfir1 deformation by rolling- and then soften with fwther rolling-, thereby exhibiting wovk softening. Optical metallography on Cd, Mg, and Zn shows that work softening is accompanied by a change in grain size occurring during deformation. The creep of zinc from -1l° to +60°C at stresses in the range of 7.9 to 17.3 kg per sq mm is given by € = e0 -t- Bt + Kt +at6. The third and second rate constcints are related by the equation a = K~ K6 and their stress and temperature dependence can be represented by the equations K = A, . exp - (u, - Bu)/kT. A model based upon the stress activated glide of sub-boundaries is proposed which qualitatively accounts for the metallog-raphic observations. Expressions, which are in reasonable quantitative agreement with the ex-pe~inzental observations, are derived for the creep of zinc. THE term "work softening" has been used previously by Polakowski1 and by Cottrell and stokes2 to describe phenomena where further strain of a deformed material leads to a decrease in flow stress. In both cases, however, the conditions were changed for the second straining. Here, the term "work softening" is intended to refer to a decrease in flow stress after continued straining in the same direction at the same temperature: work softening is the antithesis of "work hardening". Work softening of zinc was reported by chadwick3 and in discussion of that paper Jenkins4 indicated that cadmium also work softens. More recently work softening has been reported5 in two magnesium alloys, -99.5 pct Mg. Chadwick found that the hardness, 0.2 pct Proof Stress and the UTS of electrolytic zinc all increased with progressive cold reductions up to 30 pct and then progressively decreased with further rolling. Gay and Kelly6 used a back-reflection X-ray technique to study the effect of cold rolling zinc and found that although deformations greater than 2 to 5 pct reduction in thickness produced some recrystallized grains, deformations greater than 40 pct caused com-plete spontaneous recrystallization. At deformations greater than 60 pct the material was found to consist solely of recrystallized grains, -20 pm diam, the size of which decreased with increasing reduction and was much less than the initial grain size of the annealed material (-300 pm diam). Similar results were also reported for cadmium, tin, and lead.6 Gay, Hirsch, and Kelly' suggest that these experiments indicate recrys-tallization takes place when the dislocation density exceeds a certain value. However, no measurements of MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The purity of the metals used in this work is indicated by the following figures: Zn (99.99); Cd (99.94); Mg (99.95); T1 (99.99). The zirconium was iodide crys tal bar with a probable purity of about 98 pct. The metals were obtained in the form of 0.25 in. thick strip or 0.425 in. diam rod by various fabrication methods and then annealed to ensure complete re-crystallization. Hardness-deformation curves were obtained at room temperature by rolling 4 in. thick strip under conditions which left a surface adequate for diamond pyramid hardness tests immediately after rolling. The hardness was taken as the niean of five impressions made using a 5 kg load and the time elapsing between rolling and making the last impression never exceeded 5 min. The zinc specimens for creep testing were from 3 by 3 by 4 in. cast slabs which were rolled to 0.10 in. thickness starting at 350°C and finishing cold. The resulting strip was cut into pieces 1 in. wide and annealed in batches. With suitable choices of annealing temperature between 100" arid 400°C five different grain sizes varying from 4.54 x 10' to 3.03 x l05 grains per sq cm (530 to 20 um diam) were obtained. Creep tests were done in compression using a sub-press, based on a design after Ford,8 in which the strip is compressed between dies 0.100 in. wide under conditions of plane strain. Since there is no lateral spread of the material, the area of contact between the dies and strip remains constant throughout the test and the application of a constant load, using the load maintaining device of a hydraulic testing machine, resulted in a constant stress. Covering the dies with strips of P.T.F.E. reduced frictional effects to a minimum. The creep strain was obtained by measuring the travel of the crosshead of the testing machine to a sensitivity of 0.1 pct reduction in thickness. The complete subpress assembly was contained in a steel box and for tests above the ambient this was filled with liquid paraffin and heated electrically. Temperatures below the ambient were obtained with a cooling mixture of acetone and solid carbon dioxide in the box. The liquids were stirred and the temperature of the specimen, which was controlled to ±0.5"C dur-ing a test, was measured by a thermocouple placed near the dies. Compression testing of cylindrical specimens was also carried out in the subpress using hardened flat discs separated from the test material by P.T.F.E. sheets which obviated barrelling of the specimens. THE literature concerning the remelting of aluminum and its alloys is very rich. Unfortunately the greater part of the papers about this subject have no scientific value, for the theories or explanations are too often in opposition to the laws of physical chemistry. Furthermore only a few of the methods of purification1,2 are considered in the literature. Hence it has seemed necessary to the author to sketch a general theory of the purification of secondary aluminum. The purpose of the purification is to eliminate the impurities that the charges and the atmosphere of the furnaces bring into the bath during the successive remeltings. Indeed scrap as well as metal can be used when soiled with oil, greases, water, .. , if it has been sufficiently dried and contains oxides. At the melting point of the metal, the oils and greases are decomposed into their constituent elements H2, 02, H2O, C02, CO, CH4, and others. These gases are added to the corresponding gases in the atmosphere of the furnace. The impurities introduced into the metal during the remelting will accordingly be the products resulting from the action of these gases on the liquid bath. The quantity of hydrogen that is soluble in aluminum and its alloys is given by the relation of Sieverts3 as a function of its partial pressure PH2 in the atmosphere [m = K _%/PH, [I]] where K is a constant, which depends only upon the temperature and increases with it. The experiments of Röntgen and Braun4, Röntgen and Möller5, Bircumshaw6 and Winterhager7 have rendered it possible to determine the value of K, when the temperature is inferior to 1.000°K. One obtains: [log K = - 4,702.5 + 0.238 [2]] Besides its usual signification, the term PH2 represents also the internal pressure of dissolved hydrogen, since in the equilibrium, that is, when no gas exchange occurs between the two phases, the pressures of hydrogen in the metal and in the atmosphere must be equal. Eq I shows that when the partial pressure of H2 increases the amount of dissolved hydrogen in equilibrium increases, and that, if the contrary occurs, the quantity of H2 should diminish. However, if for any reason the diffusion of hydrogen is hindered and the total amount of dissolved gas remains constant while the temperature lowers, the internal pressure of H2 increases until it reaches the value of the hydrostatic pressure. At this point, bubbles of hydrogen appear in the bath and escape out of it. The amount of hydrogen in the metal is then limited by a maximum depending on the hydrostatic pressure, which is practically equal to one atmosphere. Indeed hydrogen does not accumulate in the form of a hydride appearing as a separate solid phase. However, even the mechanism of the solubility is not yet elucidated. ALTHOUGH it was known some years ago at the- Utah Copper Co. mills that fine grinding improved flotation recoveries, no accurate data were available until recently as to just how far the grinding could be carried economically. In 1923 the ultimate degree of fineness for flotation feed was supposed to be about 10 per cent. on 65 mesh, with approximately 55 per cent. through 200 mesh, which meant that most of the mineral would pass 100 mesh. At this time Garfield and Wilfley tables were used ahead of flotation and a good deal of the coarse mineral removed prior to the ball mill regrind. Shortly afterwards, mill-scale tests developed the fact that on a feed containing not over 10 per cent. +65¬mesh material flotation alone would give a copper recovery equal to that obtained by the combination of tables and flotation, but that on much coarser feed the recovery with flotation alone was lowered. This was at a time when all the sulfide minerals were floated if possible, so that the only requisite was to grind fine enough to free the mineral from gangue. EARLIEST USE op MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION OF TAILINGS As early as 1921, the writer had attempted to determine by chemical analysis the relative proportions of copper minerals in tailings from an ore that made extremely poor flotation results. Chemical analysis was not satisfactory or conclusive, and samples of these tailings were sent to the U. S. Bureau of Mines Station at the University of Utah for micro-scopic examination. The question at that time was to determine, if possible, which copper minerals had been lost and why, but R. E. Head, in his report, revealed other interesting data. He said in part: Briefly stated, the mineral particles or grains may be classified into separate groups as follows: 1. Free grains of pyrite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite, respectively, which contain no other included sulfides; 2. Grains in which all three of the copper sulfides are represented (the core may he of chalcopyrite, partially altered to bornite, these two minerals being entirely surrounded by a shell of chalcocite); 3. Grains composed of equal amounts of bornite and chalcocite or chalcopyrite and chalcocite.

The correct sampling of coal and coke is becoming important to an ever increasing number of producers and consumers. This, therefore, may be an opportune moment to examine where we stand with regard to existing and proposed methods. In this paper an attempt will be made to review, as briefly as possible, some of the considerable amount of painstaking research which has been done in the last 10 years, and which has unquestionably led to a much better understanding of the subject. In so doing we shall try, on the one hand, to make clear where substantial progress has been made, and on the other hand, to draw attention to points that require further investigation. The paper is divided into sections in order to emphasize the major divisions of the subject; further, in order to retain this emphasis, detailed consideration of some of the points has been relegated to appendixes. No attempt has been made to give a complete survey of the literature, as this has already been done by L. A. Bushell.2 The following abbreviations will be used: A.E., average error; P.E., probable error; S.W.R., size-weight ratio; B.S.I., British Standards Institution. Section 1.—Cost It has often been stated that the cost of sampling should bear some relationship to the value of the product, and since coal is a relatively cheap raw material it would be a major error to specify, for ordinary commercial purposes, elaborate and costly methods of sampling which nobody would adopt. Specifications must be of such a nature that they will be used. We believe that one of the achievements of the last 10 years has been to reduce the cost of sampling. There is, however, another point to be considered; via., that the cost of sampling should bear some relationship to the value of the investigation. THE September issue of the Engineering and Mining Journal carried an item regarding the Cercapuquio Mining Co. which was mentioned as a large producer of lead, zinc, and cadmium, situated near Huancayo, Peru. The paragraph caught my eye because I had not heard of the property in thirty years and I recollect all too well the circumstances of its accouchement. In 1916 1 was making my headquarters in the town of Huancayo, then the terminus of the Central Railway of Peru, and was examining mines and prospects in that general area for Cerro de Pasco. In the course of my work I became acquainted with an engaging and energetic "practical" miner named Balarin, a Dalmatian living in Huan¬cayo, and made numerous trips in his excellent company. One day Balarin came to the down-at-heels hostelry where I stopped and told me that a Cholo prospector, a character by the name of Jose, had just reached town and claimed to have made a discovery in a little known locality called Cercapuquio. Lead-silver, Balarin said, and showed me a sample of galena about the size of his fist. "Fine," I remarked. "When do we leave?"

THE real and permanent advances which take place in any industry are for the most part slow evolutions which frequently develop and grow almost imperceptibly from clay to clay. A meritorious idea may and generally does require long and patient development and commercial application under a variety of conditions and in a number of localities before it emerges as standard and generally accepted practice. There must be not only technical perfection but also economic advantage. Thus a cross-section taken at any particular time of an industry may reveal little that is distinctly new and yet there may have been considerable progress. During the past year there has been little that is new in milling and yet there has been real progress; some problems have been solved and some of what we may term the newer developments have become more firmly, established.

TWO papers on health and safety were given Thursday afternoon when a joint session of the Health and Safety Committee and the Mining Methods Committee was held. T. T. Read presided and the first paper, on ventilation at Climax, was presented by the author, L. H. Glanville. In the subsequent discussion by Cloyd M. Smith, P. B. Bucky, B. F. Tillson, D. F. Haley, J. L. G. Weysser, and others a number of interesting points not covered by the paper, which appears in full in the January Mining Technology, were brought out. Ventilation troubles in mines so often hinge on the air being too hot and damp that it was interesting to hear of one where it is frequently too cold and too dry.

The theory presented ill this paper makes possible examination of the phenomenological aspect of secondary oil recovery by alcohol flooding. Limitutions of the theory are contingent on three primary assumptions: (1) chemical equilibrium, (2) no fingering, and (5) no dispersion. The second assumption implies one-dimensional flow. In a geometric sense the theory extends the Buckley-Leverett construction to systems of two slightly miscible fluids and to systems of three components. This is made possible by considering single-phase fluids to be made up two phases, namely of an excess of one phase and a negative amount of the other phase. The procedure is discussed in the paper. The theory also permits direct determination of the relationship between the aqueous phase saturation and the concentration of water in the aqueous phase in a zone of variable composition. The velocity of planes of constant water concentration and of constant saturation can be computted likewise and the existence of saturation discontinuities inferred. Consequently the behavior of such a Zone, which may exist at some time between a displaced and a displacing fluid, May be determined. mathematical details are given in Appendices. Problems of experimental verification are pointed out on the basis of a supporting experiment. Implications of the theory and effects of violations of primary assumptions are discussed briefly. The major conclusion is that, if the primary assumptions are met, with pure alcohol and alcohol-rich .slugs piston-like displacement of oil and water is possible. INTRODUCTION The recovery of oil from porous media by alcohol displacement has been studied for several years. Extensive experimental investigations into alcohol flooding have been carried out in the laboratory although little has been done in the field. A large amount of practical information is available, the extent being indicated by the first three papers cited 1-3 and their respecrive bibliographies. This has permitted the Formulation of inferential theories. A more analytical approach in which theories are developed primarily by reasoning from known physical principles and relationships has, however, lagged behind. In fact, an analytically derived theory of alcohol displacement has not been available. The theory presented in this paper on oil and water displacement by alcohol from a porous medium is a result of the analytical approach. The theory is idealized, as certain assumptions had to be made to make the mathematics tractable and reduce complexity of argument. In particular, major assuptions concerning conditions of equilibrium, interfacial stability, longitudinal mixing, etc., led to the exclusion of fingering, for example, from all considerations. In many laboratory experiments reported in the literature fingering could not be avoided. There is, therefore, disagreement between theories based on experimental evidence available and the analytically derived theory presented here. This theory presented is based on known physical data and makes use of the Buckley-Leverett construction and its suggested extension. The mathematical derivation of the theory is given in Appendices. Three examples relevant to alcohol displacement are discussed to explain the use of this theory: (1) system of two immiscible fluids (the Buckley-Leverett case); (2) system of two slightly miscible fluids involving an extension of the Buckley-Leverett construction; and (3) system of three components, including injection of pure alcohol or alcohol-rich fluid as a special case, which involves a more general extension of the Buckley-Leverett construction. In these discussions strict assumptions were made to impose equilibrium conditions and exclude mixing and fingering. Effects of relaxing these assumptions and consequent extensions of the theory are indicated. The complexity of the alcohol displacement process makes experimental verification of the theory essential. Some relevant evidence is offered in this paper.

VARYING in thickness and in number from place to place, coal seams in the Canadian Rockies also range in pitch from nearly horizontal to vertical, sometimes with overturns. Over the entire coal-bearing area there are considerable differences of rank in coals of the same geological age, and there are marked differences in ash content and wash-ability characteristics. Correlation of seams at mining operations within a few miles of each other has often proved impossible. These factors influence mining methods, and, of course, production results. The oldest coal formations of western Canada are of Lower Cretaceous age, as the carboniferous sediments are marine and contain no coal. Coal is also present in formations of Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary ages. The rank of coal varies from semi-anthracite in some operations in the Kootenay and Luscar formations of the Lower Cretaceous in the Rockies to lignite in the Tertiary fields of the Saskatchewan prairies. Fig. 1 shows the general extent of the formations. The pitching seams, chiefly Lower Cretaceous, occur in the western belt of the Rocky Mountain foothills and the eastern slopes of the Rockies themselves. (The road to Tent Mt. strip pit, elevation 7000 ft, is shown on p. 832.) Formations extend from the U. S.-Canadian boundary for several bundred miles in Alberta and continue for a similar distance in British Columbia. Present geological estimates show a probable reserve of the order of 25,000 million tons of coal ranging from high volatile bituminous to semi-anthracite, with a large percentage of coking coal, constituting one of the major world reserves of that type. It should be noted that although the quoted estimate probably errs on the conservative side, the question of access to the seams in a mountainous terrain will always be a problem; a wide divergence may exist between actual reserves and the quantities of coal economically recoverable. An excerpt from the Canadian government Report of the Royal Commission on Coal 1946 states that conditions favorable to coal formation were intermittent and these intervals relatively brief in comparison with periods in which no coal was formed. Conditions were favorable to the growth or accumulation of vegetation in one area, while fresh water sediments and marine shales were being deposited in other areas. During periods of emergence the coal deposits were subjected to erosion or were covered by coarse sands and gravels from the mountains, whereas during submergence they were covered by fine clays deposited in embayments of the sea. During some of the periods of coal formation, volcanic activity deposited beds of fine volcanic ash and dust with the coal-forming vegetation. Coal deposits reach their greatest development in the mountains and thin rapidly to the east into the plains area, where they are deeply buried beneath younger sediments. For example, in the Fernie area of southeastern British Columbia there are in places 22 seams having an aggregate thickness of 150 ft in a stratigraphic interval of 3500 ft, whereas at Cole-man in the Alberta Crowsnest area the measures are only 800 ft in thickness and contain a maximum of five seams aggregating about 47 ft of coal. At Belle-vue, 10 miles further east, the measures are reduced to 430 ft with only three seams aggregating about 37 ft of coal. Subsequently the tremendous forces involved in the upthrust of the Rocky Mountains produced great displacement of the coal-bearing formations and at the same time a change in geologically young coals from low to high rank. The floor or footwall of most seams consists of carbonaceous shales, which are almost as adaptable to bending as the coal seams themselves. IN the belief that a critical study of its operating problems might be a sound investment, the Cuban American Manganese Corporation initiated an ore-treatment research in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology One of the early objectives of this research naturally became the relationship of the microscopy of the Cuban ores of the Corporation to their flotation treatment The operations in Cuba have already been described by F S Norcross, Jr 7 and the laboratory study of manganese oxide flotation goes back a number of years 4 Broadly speaking, the difficulties encountered in the flotation of manganese ores are that the consumption of reagents is extremely high, the concentrate contains more silica than is desirable and the tailing losses are relatively high An appreciable betterment on any of these scores would achieve a definite betterment in costs, quantity of minable ores, and quality of product The microscope study discussed in this paper was made on samples from the Quinto mine, from the Ponupo mine, and from mill products at various stages of passage of the ore through the mill The writers have had access to Company records and in particular to the petrographic studies made on thin sections of ore by the late Professors R J Colony and Philip Krieger, of Columbia University They acknowledge their debt to both of these men for the help derived from the reports Manganese oxides are black, friable, smudging It is therefore, very difficult to judge operations by inspection The mineralogy of manganese compounds seems to be confused, and the authors believe that many more minerals have been described than actually exist Much of this difficulty is due to the prevalence of the structural conditions that will be discussed further in this paper, namely, the porosity and the friability of the ores, and the extremely intimate association of minute manganifeous mineral crystals with impurities of various sorts By all odds the most important manganese mineral in Cuba is the one that in this paper is called "psilomelane " The name "psilomelane" has been used in so many different ways that the choice of it for this ore may not be approved by all However, it seems to be the best under the circumstances This mineral accounts for about 97 per cent of the manganese in the ores of the Quinto and Ponupo mines and in the mill feed The remaining odd 3 per cent consists mostly of pyrolusite together with minor amounts of other manganese oxide minerals DESCRIPTION OF PSILOMELANE Aggregate Structure In grains or lumps, psilomelane has a characteristic fibrous appearance and seems

Although the previous discussions regarding the manipulations, calculations, and interrelationships of the various components of the pro forma income statement were illustrated in the text, many individuals are un- familiar with the format and appearance of a final spread sheet for the evaluation of a mining property. As a result, it seems appropriate to conclude this book with an abbreviated case study of an actual mine property (currently in production) showing the cash flow analysis and some back-up data. Obviously all of the supporting data and calculations for the case study presented cannot be provided; however, reference is made to the major assumptions utilized and to the appropriate procedures employed in the calculations, as described elsewhere in the text. The problem associated with using any case study for illustrative purposes is that one tends to be overwhelmed by detail. For instance, specific costs, prices, expenditure timings, and other variable values may be challenged because they either do not conform to one's expectations or are not consistent with specific operating experiences. When this occurs the instructional value of the problem becomes obscured. The purpose of most case studies, and particularly the one presented in this chapter, is to expose the student to the methodology, procedure, and format associated with performing a cash flow analysis of a mining property. It is not to laboriously wade through the specific details associated with operating and capital cost development, mine plans, or equipment schedules. The notable occurrences, extending vertically and laterally perhaps several hundred feet, presented scattered, bladed lenses of this mineral in a matrix of quartz, pyrite, enargite, bornite, and chalcocite. But under the microscope covellite is seen to be widespread in the Butte ores, though in such small quantity that megascopic examination will not discover it. In early mining operations covellite was found in the Gray Rock vein, a member of the Blue vein system. As described by Sales,' it persisted as an occasional ore mineral, associated with quartz, pyrite, tetrahedrite, bornite, chalcocite, and minor amounts of sphalerite, from the 700-ft. to the 1,200-ft. level of the East Gray Rock and Diamond mines. Mining as an industry of Utah had its inception in the activities of United States soldiers who came to the Salt Lake valley under the command of Gen. P. E. Connor, founder of Fort Douglas, in October, 1862. Many of these soldiers were from California and naturally employed their spare time in the search for minerals. Although their military status did not permit them to make locations in their own names, they assiduously prospected the region in accordance with their own knowledge and with in- formation conveyed to them by Indians and others. Their efforts were encouraged by their commander, who thereby fairly earned the title of father of the industry here, and by their other officers, and many discoveries that subsequently proved of great value were made by the soldiers. No systematic prospecting or mining had been done in the Territory previously although early Mormon settlers in the southern portion had mined a little ore from time to time in order to provide supplies of lead for bullets. The Mormon leaders at that time did not encourage mining. They held that agriculture was more important and profitable for their followers.

Dropping from third position among the oil-producing states of the nation in 1942, Oklahoma ranked fourth in 1943 with a total output of 121,431,ooo bbl., a decline of 11.9 per cent from the previous year's total of 137,792,000 bbl. Production ranged from a maximum of 346,900 bbl. daily in February to a low of 322,800 bbl. daily in October, and at the close of the year was averaging 330,000 bbl. daily from 52,096 wells, or an average of 6.3 bbl. per well. The state's well, average at the close of 1942 amounted to 6.7 bbl. At the turn of the year, it appeared reasonable to assume that Oklahoma's producing rate would continue its downward trend during 1944 unless reversed by greater than normal discoveries. To Jan. I, 1944, Oklahoma has produced 5,188,466,-ooo bbl. of crude oil. Development and Exploration A total of 1287 wells was drilled in 1943, representing an increase of 77 wells, or 6.4 per cent over the preceding year's total of 1210. Of the wells completed, 587 (45.6 per cent) were oil wells with an average initial production of 319 bbl.; 127 (9.9 per cent) were gas wells with an average initial of 8,639,000 cu. ft.; and 573 (44.5 per cent) were dry. A total of 333 wildcats was drilled (25.9 per cent of all wells), an increase of 13 (4.1 per cent) over the 1942 total of 320. Of the*wildcats drilled, 46 (13.8 per cent) were oil wells with an average initial production of 235 bbl.; 27 (8.1 per cent) were gas wells with an average initial of 8,249,-ooo cu. ft.; and 260 (78.1 per cent) were recorded as failures. Reconditioning of wells throughout the state led to a total recompletion of 230 wells. Of these, 131 were oil wells with a combined initial production of 8360 bbl., 31 were gas wells with a total initial of 211,950,000 cu. ft., and 68 were abandoned. The 46 successful wildcats opened 33 new producing areas, one of which produced from three separate horizons, and led to the development of production in new horizons in 11 old pools. While none of the 1943 discoveries have as yet developed into what might be termed major pools, the West Moore pool, in Cleveland County, and the West Edmond pool, in Oklahoma County, are the two outstanding new areas opened to production. The West Moore pool, sec. 29, 10 N., 3 W., discovered in December 1943, was completed for an initial production of 248 bbl. of oil in 3 hr. through small tubing chokes in the second Wilcox sand from 8787 to 8800 ft. One well was drilling in this area at the close of the year. The West Edmond pool, an April discovery in sec. 32, 14 N 4 W., is producing from the Hunton lime at a depth of approximately 6950 ft., the world's deepest Hunton lime pool. To the end of the year, 15 oil wells had been completed, with no gas wells and no failures. Accumulated production to Jan. I, 1944, amounted to 474,300 bbl. of 41" gravity oil. MAGNETITE mining and milling in the Eastern States showed continuing improvement during the year. Some of the smaller mines remained idle, but the larger operations responded promptly to the improved situation in the iron and steel industry. The output of ore for 1936 was over twice that for 1935. A number of improvements were made in mine plant and equipment, and operating forces were increased and maintained at near normal. The coming year should see additional mines started up and production increased at the larger properties.
