Of the important phenomenon of the hardening of steel, Professor Sauveurl says: It would seem as if the methods used to date for the elucidation of this complex problem have yielded all they are capable of yielding and that further straining of these methods will only serve to confuse the issue, the point having been reached when this juggling, no matter how skilfully done, with allotropy, solid solutions, and strains is causing weariness without advancing the solution of the problem. The tendency of late has been to abandon the safer road of experimental facts and to enter the maze of excessive speculations, in which there is great danger of some becoming hopelessly lost. The conclusion seems warranted that new avenues of approach must be found if we are to obtain a correct answer to this apparent enigma. With some degree of fitness we may say this of other problems. It seems likely that one of the new avenues of approach to many metallo-graphic problems is the study of crystal structure, or more accurately, the atomic arrangement, by means of the x-ray spectrometer. The crystal structure of some materials has been carefully worked out by the mineralogist, but his methods are, in general, unsuited to commercial metals and a method that yields even better information is at hand as the result of work on the diffraction of x-rays by Laue and the Braggs2 and later by HullI3 St. John, and others. It should be understood that the contour of free crystals, which is the subject of measurements by the crystallographer, is the result of the atomic structure and, in general, bears a simple and obvious relation to it. The use of the x-ray spectrometer4 has been described frequently, so the procedure will not be given here.

The Spies mine is located in the eastern half of the northwest quarter of section 2443-35, near the village of Iron River, Mich., and is operated by The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. Speaking generally, the jasper hanging walls of most of the deposits in the Iron River district dip at a steep angle and are exceedingly strong, standing without caving, even after mining has been continued for years and after large excavations have been made. The ore is fairly hard and tough and contains no slippage faces. It occurs in large masses, which are often egg shape, with the smaller end down, and can be mined in open stopes without the use of timber. The common system employed in the district is the shrinkage stope, or some modification of it. The Spies system was developed to utilize the advantages of the open-stope method and to avoid the disadvantages of the shrinkage stope. The Spies shaft was sunk to such a depth that the bottom, or third level, was in rock at a short distance below the bottom of the orebody, the shape and extent of which had been previously determined by diamond drilling. This is shown in plan and by the ore contours at the first, second, and third levels in Fig. 1, and in section in Figs. 2 to 7. In order to provide the necessary mills and raises, three parallel crosscuts were driven on 25 ft. centers on the bottom level. Drifts on the second and first levels were driven to the orebody and followed the foot wall in a southerly direction to the end of the ore. In crosscut 3, Fig. 1, raises 30, 40, 50, and 60 were carried up on the foot wall and holed into the second level, and were ultimately carried up and holed into the first level. These foot-wall raises carry the pipes and ladders, provide a means of ventilation, and furnish safe communication to all working places in the stope. From crosscuts 1, 2, and 3, raises were completed to a height of 32 ft., or the elevation of the first sublevel. They were then connected by east and west crosscuts to the main foot-wall raises 30, 40, 50, and 60, shown in Fig. 4. The crosscuts in raises 1 to 5 were then driven west and the

(communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Dilworth's formulas and tables are of course correct, and the extinction will occur as calculated, provided the money periodically set aside for sinking-fund be really invested. and the interest compounded as assumed in the calculation. Actually, in almost all cases, such funds are used "in the business," in which case, in addition to the periodical charges for principal of the fund, additional charges must be made at the end of each period to cover the interest and compound interest on previous charges. The periodical charge for sinking-fund thus becomes a varying and continually increasing one until the date of extinction. On many accounts it seems more natural and convenient to make the extinction by a fixed periodical charge under the legal rule for partial payments, namely, that each payment should apply first to the interest due at the date of payment;: and any remainder, after this is satisfied, be deducted from the principal before the interest for the next period is calculated. The distribulion of dislocatiorls genevnted during the propagalion of hydrogen-induced cracks in Fe-Si cryslcrls was studied as a funclion of temperature f-110o lo 243°C) and silicorz conlenl (3.1 and 4.2 pct). It zoas found that the clislocntiotl densily and the size of the plctslic zone increased with increasing tempevalnre and decreasing silicon conlent. Furtheruvzove, there was a correlcrtion in the dislocalion patterns formed around cracks that propagated at different tempevattrt-es in cvyslals of diffevent silicon contents such that a 1 pcl itlcverise in silicon content was equivalent to a lemperaluore redziclion of approximately 120°C. The experimenlal YeSnllS were compaved with the results of an elastic-plastic wodel that relates the size of the pluslic .zone to the cvack length, internal pressure, and yield stress. it was found that the clzunges in the dislocctlion cryrays with lemperature and combosition can be e-kplaincd by the lemperatrnre and composilion dependence of the yield stress. An wmtsual feature of this study was the observation of low -temperature noncrystrrllogruphic cracks. PLASTIC relaxation can occur at the edge of a moving crack by the operation of pre-existing dislocation sources or by the creation of new sources in a region of perfect 1attice.l'2 The amount of relaxation in a given crystal depends on the crack velocity and the temperature, and can determine whether a crack propagates in a brittle or a ductile manner.1-3 Tetelman and Robertson4 observed microcracks m Fe-3 pct Si single crystals that formed on (100) planes by the precipitation of hydrogen gas during electrolytic charging at 23°C. The plastic deformation accompanying crack propagation was observed in the form of dislocation etch pits and an extensive analysis has been made of the size, shape, and crystallography of the dislocation arrays5-7 This paper describes the effect of temperature on the plastic deformation generated around hydrogen-induced cracks in Fe-3.1 pct Si and Fe-4.2 pct Si single crystals. The observations are compared with the results of an elastic-plastic model for yielding around a crack containing an internal pressure. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The composition of the materials used in this study are given in Table I. Situation.—The Camp Bird mine is in Imogene basin† (Fig. 1) at the head-waters of Canon creek, a branch of the Gunnison, in the southern part of Ouray county, Colorado, towards the northern edge of the region known as the San Juan mountains, and about 10 miles W. of the continental divide. It is 8 miles by wagon-road from Ouray, the terminus of a branch of the Rio Grande' Southern railway. The distance from Denver to Ouray is 387 miles by rail. In an air-line, the mine is 190 miles SW. of Denver. The altitude of the town, tunnel and buildings is 11,200 ft., and level No. 2 is 11,500 ft., and No. 1 is 11,670 ft., above sea-level. The lowest point of the lode-ontcrop, which crosses the basin E. and W., has an elevation of 11,850 ft., and that of the highest point, on the divide between Imogene and Tomboy basins, is 13,250 ft. On the eastern slope of the Imogene basin (towards Ironton) the vein is less clearly defined on the surface. Marquard—The problem of the automatic control of a grinding-classification circuit is not nearly as simple as has been indicated and it cannot be universally solved through the application of this device. The sound emanating from a ball mill such as the metallic clink of the balls against the liners can at times be misleading. The fact that the sound level due to the balls hitting the liners may be at a minimum does not necessarily mean that the mill is properly loaded. I have in mind an ore we treat that has a soft talcy gangue. The soft fluffy nature of this material makes the sound from the ball mill a most misleading parameter that is worthless as a means for controlling the amount of ore fed to the mill. In every milling plant there are transportation lags due to the time it takes the ore to travel from the mill bins to the ball mill. In many plants there may be several different transportation lags due to varying distances of bins from ball mill. These transportation lags can most seriously affect the operation of a controller. It has been found that under many circumstances the transportation lags can be so bad as to cause the controller to hunt seriously. Hunting can and in many cases does become so serious as to render automatic control impossible because of the surges it causes. While it is possible to compensate for this type of lag, this apparatus does not lend itself readily to accomplish the required compensation. Further, if there are groups of bins at various distances from the ball mill, compensation for one may not be sufficient or may be too great for another. Each milling plant presents a separate problem. The apparatus as presently described does not appear sufficiently flexible to accomplish this. It should be noted that the load on the classifier rakes is determined by measuring the current input to the rake drive motor. Variations in line voltage will

(New York Meeting, February, 1912,) THE earliest example of attempting to form finely-divided materials into larger masses for better adaptation to commercial use was probably the briquetting of peat and lignite-waste at Paris by the use of a clay binder. It was from this attempt that our word briquette has arisen (Fr. la brique), the formed masses being shaped similar to ordinary bricks. This term does not, however, lend itself to the many shapes of such formed material as are now being produced, as few of them aside from some of the European brown-coal products bear any resemblance to the shape of that well-known article. The term "agglomeration " has therefore been chosen as more accurately descriptive of the products now being manufactured, this term including the molding as well as the sintering. With the increasing prices of fuel and ores and the greater demand for economy in the operation of industrial plants, more ,attention has been paid in recent years to the utilization of waste products and low-grade ores and fuels. Much of the waste has been occasioned by the inability to utilize finely ,divided ores and fuels in the furnaces because they could not be kept there, or else because they clogged up the furnace-shaft so that gases could not be forced through under ordinary conditions of operation. As a result, all such fines were thrown on the dump. Again, with the exhaustion of the richer deposits of ores, concentration of lower-grade ores becomes a necessity, and most concentrates are produced in a finely-divided condition. Aside from these considerations, there is also the economy in the cost of operating the plant; a furnace running on agglomerated material will have a much greater output than one working on fines. In one instance the charge of an iron blast-furnace was changed from fine concentrates to briquettes and the output was increased four-fold; better results could have been obtained had facilities been at hand for taking care of the increased output.

THERE is one problem of the new administration that has received the attention and thought of the organized engineers of America for many years past. This is the problem of the reorganization of the Federal Government. The, inadequacy, the wastefulness, and the inefficiency of our federal organization was evident, enough under pre-war conditions. These inadequacies, these inefficiencies, these wastes were exhibited to the country during the war at the cost of millions. Congress has placed the problem in the hands of a very able Congressional Joint Committee, but if this Joint Committee succeeds in securing the imminently necessary results it will only be by full insistent support to it by public opinion. Many attempts have been made at reorganization before but all, of them have gone to the same crematory-the interminable differences in opinion among the executive and legislative officials over details.

The extent of the plant, and the fact that the units making up the various departments are located in different parts of the works, make it impracticable to mention the departments in any regular order with regard to their location. They are, therefore, mentioned approximately in the order of their relation to each other with reference to their functions in the making of the various products.

A GOOD DEAL of information concerning flotation has come out during the patent litigation of recent years, and the legal situation has cleared considerably, to the satisfaction of Minerals Separation, Limited. Hence, Mr. H. Livingstone Sulman, one of the originators of the successful process of that company, felt at liberty to explain, on Thursday, Nov. 20, his experience and his views in a "Contribution to the Study of Flotation," before the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy. He did not give technical details. He dealt with the physical problems, so simple, as he remarked, that he had wanted 96 pages to express his views. He presented much data, partly new and based on observations of his own, bearing upon the very complex flotation phenomena in an instructive wav and made frequent references to the valuable researches especially of Prof. Edwin Edser and Mr. Emil Hatschek.

In order to control a chemical process by other than empirical, rule of thumb methods, two types of knowledge concerning the reactions involved must be available: (1) the thermodynamics of the reactions, and (2), by no means less important for efficient operation, the mechanisms and kinetics of the reactions. Information on the thermodynamic side enables the operator to decide upon initial and final conditions, whether heat must be added or removed from the system, whether the reactions proceed farthest in the desired direction at high pressure or low, etc. Knowledge of the mechanisms involves the determination of the individual steps by which an initial set of reactants, under given conditions, proceed to give the desired final products and kinetic studies upon which the mechanisms are based give the speed at which each of these reactions or steps take place. Thus thermodynamic studies of a reaction enable the operator to control the direction and extent to which the reaction can proceed, while kinetic studies enable him to control rates and thus the time efficiency of the operations. The thermodynamics set the limit to which the reacting system approaches; the kinetics tell how fast the system actually approaches this limit. The two types of information are complementary and not antagonistic even though in discussing the mechanism the introduction of thermodynamics is entirely needless and generally of no assistance, while in thermodynamic studies mechanism need not even be mentioned. Heterogeneous Reactions The thermodynamic side of metallurgical reactions has received much attention in the past; the mechanisms, relatively, very little. The main reason for our present lack of information on the mechanisms of these reactions lies in the fact that every one of importance is a heterogenkous reaction; i. e., the substances involved in the reaction exist in more than one phase, while, if we neglect the large amount of work which has been

Data concerning the actual net energy required for pulverizing coal are lacking from the literature on coal pulverization. Power data given in the literature concern gross power and frequently include the power expended on the air blast or product-conveyor system, as well as power lost through friction in the pulverizer itself. Consequently, such data supply no information regarding the net energy consumed in pulverizing or the relative grinding resistance of various coals. In the study of coal pulverizing much work has been done on what is known as " grindability-index numbers," but grind-ability tests have seldom considered the energy input (that is, the "cause" part of the system "cause and effect"). There are many records of the effect, but even these have questionable value because the "grindability" tests did not make a pull'erized product by a method comparabLe with- commercial pulverizers. In many of the tests, only a selected part of the coal was ground, and the remainder continued to be an unknown factor. Furthermore, none of the grindability tests provide the balanced circulating load common to all modern commercial pulverizing. In order to obtain better understanding of the fundamental principles of coal pulvcrizing, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the "cause" phase; that is, the net energy input or net power excluding friction between the moving parts of the machine. As a first step in the investigation,it was necessary to design and construct a laboratory machine in which no friction-loss corrections are involved, which could grind and finish a minus-¾-inch feed, which could be emptied rapidly and completely, which could operate with a continuous feed and finish in an air separator; and, most essential of all, which would be equipped with a measuring device for recording only that portion of the total power consumed in actual pulverizing, hereafter referred to as "net energy input" or "net horsepower-hours." The channel-roller pulverizer hereinafter described is believed to meet these requirements. History oF the Machine The, work started when Ralph W. smith, engineer, St. Genevieve Lime Co., St. Cenevieve, Mo., was appointed one of the consultants of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, to develop a machine for testing the abrasiveness of coal. Smith had already developed a machine for testing the abrasive-ness of dentifrices,1 and it was thought the same principles might be applied to coal, Smith's machine had a revolving disk with an annular channel in which the sample was placed. IN accordance with the custom of recent years, the Institute joined with the Western Division of the American Mining Congress in holding a joint meeting at Joplin on Sept. 28, 29 and 30. Actually the meeting might be said to have begun on the 27th, since the Engineering Education Committee held two sessions on that day, which are reported on another page. In addition to these sessions there were informal gatherings in the Hotel Conner, which was the headquarters, on the golf links and elsewhere of all those who had arrived by Sunday morning. The technical sessions were formally opened on Monday morning by Robert E. Tally who, after suitable preliminary remarks, introduced A. Scott Thompson, of Miami, Okla. Mr. Thompson in welcoming the visitors to the Tri-State district said that it had come to be known as a poor man's country and at the present price of zinc did not find it difficult to live up to its name. He also referred to the work Mr. Tally had done for the stabilization of the mineral industry. H. Foster Bain, in responding to this address for the Institute, said that mining men generally felt at home in Joplin, that the solutions of their problems and the general practice that had been developed in the district were not only of great interest to them, but that visitors could learn much

SOME old-time views which have recently come into my possession have inspired me to record that part of the early history of Leadville, Color- ado, with which I am familiar, the years 1878 to 1882, in the hope that others will add to what is here mentioned. My first appearance in Leadville was in June, 1878, immediately after graduation from the University of Michigan, and I found a congenial and lively crowd of young men, already there. The old log hotel, at the corner of Pine and State streets, housed some distinguished guests in the summer and fall of 1878. It was my good fortune there to make the acquaintance of James B. Grant, afterwards Governor of Colorado, in July of that year, when we were both glad of the accommodation afforded by cots in the second floor loft of the hostelry presided over by Herman Hibschle. Grant was then building his smelter and our associates were Eddy and James, August R. Meyer, and Berdell and Witherell. The Grand Hotel-Harris and Walsh, pro- prietors-was the first-class hotel of the place; but in a very few months there were many competitors.

Magnesium has long been known as the lightest of our engineering metals. This metal, silvery white in color, has a specific gravity of only 1.74. Aluminum, the next lightest structural metal, is 1 ½ times heavier; zinc is 4 times heavier; iron and steel are 4 ½ times heavier; and copper and nickel are 5 times heavier. Magnesium does not occur in the free state but is very abundant in nature, constituting 2.5 pct of the earth's crust in the form of various ores. It is the third most abundant structural metal, being exceeded only by iron and aluminum. Magnesium is unique, however, in that in the form of magnesium chloride it also exists in the oceans. Sea water is the source most widely used for production in the United States but magnesium is also commercially produced from magnesite, dolomite, and other ores as well as from certain inland brines. The vast quantity of magnesium existing in the waters of the oceans can be visualized when it is realized that the removal of one hundred million tons per year (the approximate annual steel production in the United States) for a million years would reduce the magnesium content of sea water only from 0.13 to 0.12 pct, providing no more magnesium had washed into the sea in the meantime. Not only is magnesium potentially very abundant but it is in addition a very versatile metal and can be shaped and worked by practically all methods known to the art of metal working. Two papers have been written, previously concerning operations at the Montreal East plant of Canadian Copper Refiners Limited. The first one,' written in 1932, described silver-refinery operations at the time for producing silver and gold bullion from tankhouse anode slimes; the second,Z published in 1933, consisted of a description of the entire plant. Since publication of these papers the refinery has become the world's largest producer of refined selenium. The first selenium was produced in August 1934. Tellurium production on a commercial scale followed in October 1935. This paper will deal with selenium and tellurium production and also with present operations in the silver refinery. Blister cakes from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Flin Flon, Manitoba, and commercial anodes from Noranda Mines Limited, Noranda, Quebec, are refined at Montreal East. Both these bullions have unusually high gold, selenium and tellurium content. The average assay of raw slimes produced from domestic and Noranda anodes is about 40 per cent Cu, 3600 oz. per ton Ag, 800 ox. per ton Au, 22 per cent Se and 3.7 per cent Te. Early Silver-refinery Operations From the start of operations in 1931 until July 1934, the raw slimes were oxidiae-roasted at 700' F. in a Nichols-Herreshoff furnace, acid-leached with tankhouse discarded foul electrolyte (20 per cent HzSOa), filtered and charged directly to the dor6 furnace for refining to dore metal. This is the customary method for treating tankhouse anode slimes but was not suitable at the Montreal East plant because of the high selenium and tellurium content of our slimes. In the acid-leaching process about 50 per cent of the selenium and tellurium in the roasted slimes was dissolved in the electrolyte.
