The problem of stress corrosion has been discussed a great deal recently, but many factors have as yet not been clarified. There are many interpretations of the definition of the word, different corrosive media are used, and numerous methods of stressing are utilized. Some quarters believe that the inherent strength of the material under test is the determining factor of its resistance to stress corrosion, while others think that the natural corrosion resistance of the material is the determining factor. This paper is intended merely to set forth the limited experience we have had and to discuss some of the other stress-corrosion tests which have been made with light alloys.

THIS paper is a progress report covering metallographic applications of the electron microscope that have been made during the past year at Carnegie Institute of Technology. An account is presented of the techniques that have been most satisfactory, the difficulties encountered, the resolution obtained, and the peculiarities that have been noted in the microstructures. About 12m exposures have been made during the year on the instrument, which is an RCA type B2 transmission microscope,1 and a number of these have been selected to illustrate the results obtained. Prints are also included showing the common types of falsities-to borrow a term from the biological field, the "artifacts." In brief, the paper is a record of our attempt to determine the value of the electron microscope in the study of the structure of metals and alloys. n addition to comments on techniques and the quality of photomicrographs obtainable with them, the paper discusses the nature of the etch attack on a few metals, and the possible relation between the fine structure revealed by etching and the mosaic block structure of the grains. Since numerous papers and reviews are available on the subject of imperfection in crystals, the comments here may be very brief; in fact, are restricted almost entirely to points having to do with recent theories relating the strength of metals to imperfections and to spacings of slip lines. SPECIMEN PREPARATION AND PHOTOGRAPHS Mechanical polishing by hand was used throughout this work. Precautions that must be taken in microscopy at high magnification, which have been well explained by Vilella in his book on Metallographic Technique for Steel, are likewise important with the electron microscope. This applies particularly to the need for repeated polishing and etching (each successive polish becoming less severe and each etch lighter), since the final etch should in general be no heavier than is used for oil-immersion optical microscopy and in many instances should be much lighter (compare Figs. 6a and 7a, 6d and 7b). An extremely light etch, of course, is incapable of cutting through a flowed layer of appreciable thickness. Unquestionably it would be very advantageous in each instance to compare the structures obtained by electrolytic polishing with those obtained by mechanical polishing, but difficulties with the electrolytic method have prevented this in the following collection of prints. The choice of etchant is important, of course; for example, picral proved superior to nital for tempered martensite. With the exception of Figs. Ib and IC, the replicas used were of silica, deposited up0n polystyrene and floated from the polystyrene in ethyl bromide according to polystyrene in ethyl bromide according to the method of Heidenreich and Peck.2 The samples were mounted in Bakelite, polished and etched, then the polished Bakelite

This paper examines the application of gelatin mixture models to the study of factors such as gravity effects, tectonic and residual stresses, anisotropy, physical nonlinearity, time-dependent behavior of the rock mass and connectedness of the geologic space. The technique of calibrating gelatin mixtures proposed by Richards and Mark in 1966 is applied to the particular problem considered. Similitude relationships between model and prototype are discussed with reference to the constitutive equations describing the physical behavior of the rock mass. The interaction between two openings in a linearly elastic medium, under conditions of plane strain, is used as an illustrative example with the view to describing the history of stress and deformation changes on the rock medium and lining around a slusher drift while undercuts are made in block caving. The prediction of the displacement, stress field and mode of fracture associated with a given rock structure, its initial stress field, and its physical properties is essential to rock mechanics and ground control. The basic approach is to assume the rock mass to behave as a continuous, homogeneous, and isotropic medium. The classical theory of elasticity is the simplest theory based on such a concept. Specification of the elastic constants, the initial state of stress in the ground, and the boundary conditions on stress and displacement allows one to predict stress and displacement within the body. Subsequently, provided that a criterion which governs rock fracture under various stress conditions has been established, a stability analysis of the rock structure can be performed. A natural extension of the present knowledge consists of removing some of the simplifying assumptions which characterize the analytical solutions based on the classical theory of elasticity. Complex geometry, the significance of tectonic and residual stresses, anisotropy, physical nonlinearity, time-dependent behavior of the rock mass and connectedness of the geologic space are some of the important factors which are neglected in the classical approach. A better insight into the real problem can be attained with either the finite element method of stress analysis or an experimental technique. The former has already been applied with success on several occasion 1-4 and is destined to render great service in the field of rock mechanics and ground control. The latter, which will be considered in this paper, has been used extensively in applications too numerous to be enumerated. Experimental technique involves either prototype testing, if the area to be studied is accessible, or model testing. Two- and three-dimensional photo-elastic analyses are very convenient means of obtaining the stress distribution in models of complex geometry. In general, such analyses are confined to studies of stress fields around openings which are sufficiently far removed from the surface boundary so that the stresses in their neighborhood are practically equal to those produced by an initial uniform stress field; i.e., so that gravitational effects are negligible. There are, however, many rock structures where these effects must be taken into account to attain a more realistic representation of the problem. Surface and near surface rock structures, systems of openings interacting with one another, and structural components loaded only by their own weight are some of the obvious examples. This paper was written to show how factors neglected in the usual analysis based on the classical theory of elasticity, can be taken into account when gelatin mixture models are used inconjunction with photoelastic methods. WHILE much geological work and drilling have been done in Venezuela, the incompleteness of geological evidence obtainable and the restricted areas in which drilling has been done make any estimates of oil resources extremely speculative. Nevertheless, it is felt that the data given are justified, in the belief that the ideas of a geologist familiar with the region are better than those of a promoter. The oldest beds of interest to oil men are those of the Cretaceous, which are well developed in eastern Venezuela and about parts of Lake Maracaibo. In both cases, a hard massive limestone is overlain by a great thickness, most of which is shale. In the west, in places this shale is more than 2000 ft. (610 m.) thick, while in the east it may attain 3500 ft., (1067 m.). The limestone and parts of the shale are oil producing. In the east, the Tertiary where present is almost entirely covered by the Quarternary, but in the west it is well developed. In probable unconformity over the Cretaceous shales is found a series of sandstones and shales, which may beg called the lower coal series. It is well developed southwest of the lake, where it is the oil container, and is probably the lowest series exposed east of the lake. Above this is the Pauji shale, which is probably the point of origin of all the oil east of Lake Maracaibo and in the State of Falcon. It has a thickness of about 3000 ft. (914 m.) in the Mene Grande region. The upper coal series is developed as a great thickness of sands, shales, and clays, with some partly consolidated limestone. Its thickness may be as great as 10,000 ft. It is the oil container of the Falcon-El Mene region and a probable location for oil in some of the area about the lake. It may or may not include the so-called Maracaibo series in which the oil is found at Mene Grande. Over much of Venenzuela, the Quarternary is present in unknown thickness, which probably is not great. It obscures oil structure in all cases and presents the greatest hazard of oil exploration for the fields which probably exist below.

The development of an alloy system, high-speed steel, is used as an example of the progress of physical metallurgy. Tracing the history of men and their thoughts as they studied and invented and modified these materials, the story of high-speed steel since the 1890's is seen to be a long, slow, but steady progression of achievements. Today's multiplicity of high-speed steels are the result. Data are presented on quantitative metallography of carbides in high-speed steel with high vanadium content using the QTM instrument. Grindability as well as mechanical properties are related to the content of excess MC and M6C carbides in a series of high-speed steels and the newer matrix steels. These emphasize the present state of knowledge and show the current stages of thought that may affect the development in succeeding years. It is a great thrill for me, an ex-research metallurgist and ex-practicing metallurgical engineer, to speak to an audience currently engaged in both pursuits on the occasion of the 43rd Howe Memorial Lecture before the Iron and Steel Division of the AIME. I shall not review Henry Marion Howe's distinguished career, so adequately reviewed in Maxwell Gensamer's contribution in the 1965 AIME History of Metallurgy, except to point out that, while leading the life of an intellectual, he worked as a practicing research metallurgist and a practicing metallurgical engineer for significant periods of time and contributed greatly in both areas. For those of you who believe, as I do, that in the intellectual activity of metallurgy we are blessed with an intimate mixture of science and engineering (see Mehl's 1960 Howe Lecture), we might recall that Howe, while pursuing a life of writing and teaching in later years, served as the first Chairman of the Division of Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences. That metallurgists were called upon then to lead an engineering recognition movement is perhaps related to the strong part played by the AIME and its members in the recent establishment of a National Academy of Engineering and to the fact that a metallurgist is its head, 47 years after Howe served. I stress these engineering aspects for I wish to talk about a metallurgical engineering subject today. Alloy systems, physical metallurgy, and steel blended with an historical perspective and a report on new techniques to improve the old will, I trust, be of sufficient interest to bring these lectures back to the physical-metallurgy banner from which they have departed for 4 years. Those process metallurgists, open-hearth fiends, and physical chemists among you will just have to be patient. The development of an alloy system is the engineering application of scientific thought and fact. There are many interesting alloy systems, developed to a high degree of technology and sophistication over the past 40 to 70 years. These systems are bound together and related by a similar set of characteristics. For example, stainless steels are a system in which the members are related by a high chromium content which gives a corrosion-resistant characteristic. Discussion of the paper of A. L. Sweetser, Tress., xxxviii., 236. CHARLES H. WHITE, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Those interested in leaching-processes gladly welcome contributions on either laboratory-tests, such as are reported by Mr. Sweetser, or mill-tests made on larger quantities of ore; and especially valuable are such reports, even with negative results, if the methods adopted are the outgrowth of an intimate knowledge of the conditions to be met. It seems very desirable, therefore, that as complete details as possible be given in reporting on such tests, particularly with respect to the character of the ore under examination. The questions of prime importance in the sampling of ore and in the making up of charges for laboratory-tests are those respecting its grade and uniformity. In Mr. Sweetser's paper the first of these questions is answered definitely, but the answer to the second, although apparent on inspection of the results, might be more strongly emphasized with advantage, since it is only on account of the extreme uniformity of the ore that the satisfactory results obtained could have been expected. It seems advisable to call attention to the fact that for average ores, and more particularly for uneven, or 11 spotted ores, the quantities used by Mr. Sweetser are not usually regarded as sufficient to insure satisfactory results. Let us examine the method somewhat in detail. The ore was crushed to pass a 5-mesh screen, and a sample of 45 lb. was taken out for assay and tests. The diameter of the largest grain of this ore, according to Richards,1 was 2.67 mm.-assuming here, as in the following cases, that the wire of the screen was of the largest size used for the purpose, thereby giving any possible advantage in this respect in favor of the method. The table in Richards's book, p. 852, shows that 45 lb. is a sufficient quantity for a fair sample with uniform ores, but not sufficient

The Kidd Creek orebody is a massive base metal sulphide deposit with surface dimensions of 168 m by 670 m. The steeply dipping ore- body has been evaluated to a depth of 1 524 m. To date, the mining of the orebody has been divided into three stages. The first stage of mining was an open pit operation which supplied ore from 1966 until 1977 when a depth of 219 m was reached at the widest or north end of the orebody. The second stage of mining, called No.1 Mine, was the development of an underground mine to replace the pit and recover the ore from the floor of the pit to a depth of 792 m. Development of the underground mine started in 1969. Full production of 273 000 tonnes per month was attained in 1977. The third stage of mining called No.2 Mine, was initiated to accommodate a production expansion and included the development of a second underground mining operation to recover the ore from the bottom of No.1 Mine, i.e. the 2600 level; to a depth as yet undetermined but most likely the 4600 foot level. Development of the No.2 Mine began in 1974. Full production of 91 000 tonnes per month will be achieved in 1982. The choice of the 2800 level as the partition between the two underground mines was based on the following factors: The 2600 level is the lowest level which can conveniently be mined through the No.1 Mine crusher on the 2800 level. Development and trial stoping methods for mining at depth could be evaluated in the 2600 to 2800 block utilizing the existing hoisting facilities of No.1 Mine. Early development of the ore in the 2600 to 2800 block would provide additional mill feed sooner than could be achieved by developing from No.2 Shaft. The underground mining plan then is to mine from the pit floor down to the 2600 foot level and at the same time mine from the 2800 level down to at least the 4600 foot level. PLANNING The Kidd Creek operations are designed to follow a logical mining sequence. The grade of ore supplied to the concentrator is the result of following the mining plan. The philosophy of mining has been to mine downward in horizontal slices. In the case of No.1 Mine the slices are 122 m thick while in No.2 Mine the slices will be 183 m thick. The point of this approach is to mine the pillars immediately after creating them rather than allowing them to stand, deteriorate and generate uncontrollable situations. Two types of ore are handled separately to optimize recoverable values in concentrates. The 'A' type ore is a copper zinc ore with some silver and little lead. The 'C' type ore is a zinc silver ore with some lead and copper

The advent of larger drilling, excavation, and milling equipment is resulting in a tremendous increase in the scale and annual tonnage of open pit mining. At the present time, open pits up to 3000 ft. deep, and tailings dams and waste dumps up to 600 ft. high are being planned. One of the major problems that projects of this magnitude create is stability. Stability at open pit mining developments must be assessed for tailings dams, waste dumps, and open pit slopes in overburden soil and in rock. Soil mechanics principles are used to assess the stability for the first three. This science was developed by Dr. Karl Terzaghi in the 1920’s, and since that time the theories and principles have been tested and evaluated. This experience has resulted in the development of sound theoretical concepts, workable sampling and testing techniques, and accurate methods of analysis. Typical problems that can be analyzed include: -bearing capacity of soil under dams and waste dumps. - amount of seepage under and through dams. - stability of slopes and determination of safe slope angles for tailings dams, waste dumps, and open pits. - influence of earthquakes on stability. - influence and cost of different excavation and construction techniques. To assist in comparing engineering experience, an international soil classification system has been developed and used for several decades. In addition, many excellent text books are available outlining soil mechanics principles and techniques. A high degree of technology exists in soil mechanics. This, the mining engineer cannot afford to ignore. If soil mechanics principles had been applied, many major failures involving tailings, tailings dams, or waste dumps, such as those at Aberfan, Mufulira, Luanshya, and El Cobre would not have occurred. Tailings dams are planned in Canada that will be up to 600 ft. high. Construction procedures used in the past have paid little attention to the compaction of the shell material or to the influence of earthquakes on stability. This neglect has led to failures. While failures in low dams may not be too serious, for high dams such failures could have catastrophic results. Another major area of concern is the stability of rock slopes. The state of Kansas in 1931 continued to hold fourth place on the list of oil-producing states, despite the fact that low prices for crude oil curtailed drilling to just one-half the amount done in 1930, which itself was the lowest in the preceding 10 years. The estimated crude oil production for 1931, according to sources available to the writer, will approximate 37,037,000 bbl., the lowest since 1925. Thus Kansas produced one-eighth less oil this year than it did last year when it produced 42,729,085 barrels. This year's development was characterized by a very small amount of wildcat drilling; however, large new areas were semiproven for oil production, and several thousands of acres were added to the actually proved areas in western Kansas, so that the state now has larger proven areas of oil reserves than at any time in its history since the heyday of the famous El Dorado pool. The general prospects for oil production in the near future are indeed promising for central western Kansas, where drilling costs are moderate and depths are relatively shallow compared to the remaining unexplored parts of the northern Mid-Continent area. Probably the greatest singular achievement in the state for 1931 was the development of its natural gas reserves. This development took place principally in two spots, McPherson County in central Kansas, and Stevens and Morton counties in southwestern Kansas, and it is a matter of record that more than one and one-half billion cubic feet of open-flow capacity per day were added to reserves, nearly twice the amount developed in 1930, previously the largest amount in the history of gas development in Kansas. Gas pipe lines already built and now building are in position to deliver natural gas by one system to Chicago, Ill., by another to Indianapolis, Ind., from whence lines already lead practically to the Atlantic seaboard, and to other cities large and small located west, northwest, north and northeast of Kansas. Table 2 shows all well completions for 1931 in a form to compare with the results of previous years.

Although many oil fields have been, and still are being, discovered in Oklahoma, the geology and structure of most of them have not become familiar to the general public because of the delay in securing government geological surveys and the reluctance of oil companies and other intercsted parties to give out their "inside information " Therefore, until official surveys are available, it behooves us to publish geological results as soon as possible. Fortunately the writer has been authorized by the Cement Field Oil Co. to publish his data on the Cement field, Caddo County, at this time. Locality and Description The Cement field is situated in the part of Oklahoma known generally until recently, as "Healdton fields," and lies 60 mi. (96 km.) northwest of the Healdton field proper. Like the Healdton field, it forms an approximate ellipse, trending northwest and southeast through the village of Cement on the St. LouisSan Francisco Railroad, on which it is reached in 21/2 hours from Oklahoma City. In its geological structure, the field constitutes an anticline over 13 mi. (21 km.) long and from 1 to 3 mi. wide; the point of greatest width being not far from its intersection by the above-named railroad. The major axis trends north 75' west from the village of Cement; but eastward appears deflected (if field interpretations are correct) to about south 45" east. About 5 mi. south lies an approximately parall el syncline, which may be conveniently called the Cyril syncline, the south and west boundaries of which may be distant many miles, but forming a closed basin south of the Cement anticfine. The positjon of the offsetting synclinal axis, which is believed to lie north and east of-Cement, has not been discovered. TOPOGKAFHY In the southwest part of the state, nearly all maps of Oklahoma show two mountain areas—Arbuckle and Wichita—which are conspicuous geological and topographic landmarks. In addition, some maps show a third, and smaller, range, named the Keechi Hills, in the vicinity of Cement. These hills also form a conspicuous feature in the landscape; but for some reason they have been neglected by geologists, and the

Northern Venezuela has been divided into three provinces, as follows: The Llanos, the Andean, and the Maracaibo Basin and Falcon. The first and third are large sedimentary basins offering, possibilities for oil accumulations. Oil is known to occur in many formations ranging in age from Cretaceous to Quaternary. The most prolific source of oil is probably the Cretaceous shales and limestones, from which the oil appears to have migrated into overlying porous beds. Faulting or fracturing, folding, and porosity are governing factors in the localization of commercial deposits. THE occurrence of oil seepages in Venezuela has been known since the early days of Spanish occupation. It was not until 1912, however, that any serious exploration work was undertaken. In that year, the Caribbean Petroleum Co., then a subsidiary of the General Asphalt Co., employed a large staff of geologists to make a systematic survey, of large areas in eastern and western Venezuela, selecting the most, desirable localities out of the immense area covered by the Valladares concession. This preliminary work was completed in the fall of 1913, and in February, 1914, the company completed its first commercial well at Mene Grande. Development work has progressed slowly, for various reasons, but petroleum in quantity has been encountered in nine widely separated localities. The Mene Grande field has been put on a producing basis and approximately 4,000,000 bbl. of oil are being shipped annually. Increasing quantities of oil are now being drawn from El Mene and La Rosa. In the light of these developments, the world's need for oil reserves, and the proximity of Venezuela to the United States, American capital is being attracted more and more to Venezuela. Although considerable careful geological work has been done in Venezuela by the various oil companies now operating, most of the data is. buried in the company,, files, and the published literature has been extremely meager. The most valuable contribution to date has been a map and report by Jahn, which, as it was printed in Spanish, is not. generally available to the American oil public.

INTRODUCTION Tailings dams up to about 200 ft. high are proposed to store tailings for a major mining operation on Marinduque Island in the Philippines. The original design of the dam utilized a compacted laterite starter dam followed by hydraulic placement of cycloned sands to form slime retaining dykes along the outer face of the dam. The upstream method of construction was proposed. In view of the failure of numerous tailings dams in Chile during the EL Cobre earthquake (I), an investigation was performed to assess the earthquake stability of the proposed dam. This included a soil investigation on the first cycloned sand dyke, which had been built to a height of 45 ft. Results indicated that the density of the sand was much lower than existing empirical criteria consider to be necessary for resistance to liquefaction. As a result, the dam was redesigned. The downstream method of construction was selected and a yearly construction program was developed to make use of sand available by cycloning. To increase shear strength, improve resistance to liquefaction, and to utilize steeper slopes, compaction of all sand in the dam was specified. A special underdrainage layer and toe drains were incorporated in the design. Details of the decant system and surface erosion alternatives are described. SITE CONDITIONS The mining project is located in the Philippine Islands. At the present annual rate of production, about 4,230,000 cu.m. of tailings will be produced yearly. The volume requirements for tailings storage design for the first 10 years of operation are in the order of 45,000,000 cu.m. The topography near the mine is mountainous with many gullies and canyons carved out by high intensity rainfall and runoff. The bedrock, which is generally shallow and weathered for a considerable depth, is overlain by laterite soils. Vegetation is comprised largely of palms, banana trees, and tropical shrubs and grasses. Precipitation is heavy. The average yearly rainfall over 24 years is 65.2 in. and the maximum recorded 24 hour rainfall is 9.0 in. High intensity rainfall is associated with typhoon storms, which are a seasonal threat inthe Philippines. Fig. 1 shows a summary of monthly precipitation.

The Asientos-Tepezala district is in the north of the State of Aguasca-lientes, about 30 miles north of the city of Aguascalientes, the capital. The district is reached by a standard-gage railway on the west side through the junction, Rincon de Romos, which is on the main line of the National Railways of Mexico from El Paso to Aguscalientes. The terminal is Tepezala. On the east side a narrow gage connects Asientos with the junction, San Gil, on the main line, Asientos to San Luis Potosi. Tepezala on the west side of the Asientos hills is about 2 miles from Asientos on the east side. The area between the two mining centers is separated by a low subdued divide which forms the central part of the hills. The district is in a group of isolated hills surrounded by characteristic bolsón plains. The hills rise above the surrounding plains about 6500 to 10,000 ft.; the highest peak is Alta Mira. The two mining districts lie somewhat upon the flanks of the hills at about the same elevation, 7200 ft. The district is an old one and has been known since early in the 17th Century when the mines were worked by the Franciscan Monks. Their mining operations, which were limited to the oxidized ore above the water level, consisted chiefly in extracting silver from the Santa Francisca vein. To judge from the old workings and the remains of surface plant, the operations were on a large scale. By modern mining operations since about 1900, the various mines of the district have been one of the principal sourees of ore for the smelter located at Aguascalientes. Topography The topographic features of the Asientos hills are largely controlled by the character of the underlying rocks. During the Tertiary period, the entire group of hills was probably covered by extrusive volcanic material in the form of cones and lava flows. The central part of these have since been carried away by erosion, so that remnants have been left along the borders of the hills. These remnants form rather conspicuous peaks,
