(communication to the Secretary*).-The paper by Mr. Haas will no doubt be followed with considerable interest, as it covers the power-plant problem in quite a comprehensive way, including not only the usual operating costs but also the fixed charges on the investment, and for load factors ranging all the way from 25 to 100 per cent. and fuel oil ranging from $1.25 to $2 per barrel. The very fact, however, that his paper does cover such a wide range of conditions, makes it the more imperative that any conclusion drawn from his analysis be very carefully considered for any specific case, for in making such analysis the type of prime mover and size must be selected for some one condition which might not be the proper selection had some other condition been assumed as the basic one, resulting in an unfavorable comparison under all conditions except that condition assumed. FIELD, Cleveland, Ohio (written discussion*.-)In equation 2, B is used to denote the ratio of bases (lime plus magnesia ) to acids (alumina plus silica) it being stated that this ratio gives more concordant results than the ratio either of bases to silica, or of lime to silica. I find, however, that, by making use of the ratio between true CaO (CaO by analysis minus sulfur calculated to CaS) to acids, equation 2 may he modified to agree with the observed facts within an average error of 0.0041 per cent. sulfur instead of 0.0045 per cent. The revised equation is s = 0.072 + 0.01835 - 0.00061 (t - 1400) - 0.0403B where B is the ratio of true CaO to Al2O3 Plus Si02, and the other symbols have the same significance as before. I would not appear to stress too much this slightly better agreement of the revised equation with the observed sulfur. Yet I believe that the use of this ratio of true CaO to acids is to be preferred, if for no other reason than the fact that it is more in harmony with the previous findings of the Bureau of Mines with regard to the effect of magnesia and other impurities on slag viscosity.1

MODERN mine maps are largely a product of evolution. The first mine maps used in the west were old composite maps with all the levels plotted on the same sheet. The composite was widely used and occasionally is seen even now. This type of underground map had serious limitations. One was the development of an indecipherable complex of workings around steep shafts. The other limitation was that of size; often when a working passed the limit of the sheet no map was made of it. These old maps have been superseded by the single level maps, laid out in squares or rectangles which can be expanded indefinitely in all directions. This produces a system capable of unlimited expansion in three dimensions, with all the detail of every working clearly marked and legible. A good set of mine maps should be laid out in blocks, all blocks of equal size. Each block should be limited by plane coordinates without overlap on bounding map quadrangles. At all times the direction of North should be indicated as an aid in remembering bearings of underground workings. It is desirable that all maps of whatever scale be plotted on sheets of uniform size. In fact, it is possible to make nearly all underground maps, surface maps and sections on sheets of the same size.

The Plomosas stratiform lead and zinc deposits are located in northeastern Chihuahua in a sequence of folded Paleozoic and Jurassic rocks. They consist mainly of channel or blanket-like bodies of ellipsoidal cross section restricted to a 60-in-thick shaly limestone and a 30-m-thick marble horizon of La Casita formation, with some reemplacement veins and shoots within the Plomosas formation. The mineralogy consists of iron-poor sphalerite, galena with a small silver content, and pyrite, in a gangue of calcite, barite, and minor quartz. The ore bodies present a lateral zoning with zinc-lead ratios increasing to the northwest. Vertical zoning shows marked changes in zinc-lead ratios and in the width and tenor of the ore which cannot be related to sedimentary or diagenetic features. Transgressive mineralization and some small fissure veins and breccia pipes also point to an epigenetic origin. Sulfur isotope analysis and geochemical data indicate hydrothermal solutions. Texture of the ores in the Mina Vieja marble is coarse, but in the Cuesta shale it is banded along bedding. The low iron and silver content of the sphalerite and galena and the weak hydrothermal alteration (only marbleization) of the wall rock suggest a telethermal stage of the solutions. There is no evidence of a possible intrusive rock mineralization.

Discussion of the paper of M. B. YUNG, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting; October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2451 to 2458. T. T. READ, New York, N. Y.-I might .point out that this paper of Mr. Yung's is on a field that is comparatively little known. It is not as well known as the Kochiu tin field, of Yunnan, which is probably the third . in tin output of the world. This field under discussion is considerably further west and the tin which is produced here is, according to Mr. Yung, of somewhat higher grade than the Yunnan tin, and is used by the refiners at Hong Kong to improve the grade of the Yunnan tin. Most of you know that the tin from the Yunnan is shipped to Hong Kong, where it is refined and shipped to Europe. Mr. Yung points out that the Fu Chuan deposits are entirely alluvial and not found in any veins. They .differ in that from the Kochiu deposits, which Leclere says are "nullement alluvionels; leur origéne filonienne est de plus evidentes." Granite is the country rock here; doubtless the tin occurred in veins in the granite, and the deposits have resulted from the disintegration of the granite. This is a country of strong erosive agencies. The country is semi-tropical, and the rainfall is heavy, so that one would naturally expect deep surface erosion of this kind.

There is probably no subject for study in the metallurgy of iron and steel of greater interest than the effect of manganese upon the properties of iron. Some of the peculiarities of iron and steel containing appreciable quantities of manganese were observed many years ago by Heath, Robert Mushet, and others; but it was not until the introduction of the Bessemer process, when a demand was created for large quantities of iron-manganese alloys, that such compounds of iron and manganese became articles of commerce. Since that time the demand for these alloys has steadily increased, the use of ferro-manganese not only becoming an absolute necessity in the ordinary Bessemer practice, but also essential to the manufacture of open-hearth, crucible steel and steel castings; in fact it is the only source of supply for all the manganese used in metallurgical opera-

TRANSIENT potentials obtained in resistivity prospecting can be separated into two classes. The first is electromagnetic, has a comparatively short time constant, and increases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. These electromagnetic transient potentials, of which an excellent theoretical treatment is given by Yost: are the result of changes in the current and can be classed as differentiated signals. The second class is electrochemical, has a comparatively long time constant, and decreases in relative amplitude as the electrode separation is increased. The electrochemical signals are generated by the current flow itself and can be classed as integrated signals. The transient potentials due to electrochemical factors are the subject of this article. The phenomenon is referred to as induced polarization. Schlumberger" was the first worker to observe induced polarization, but he was unsuccessful in attempts to apply the principles of induced polarization in electrochemical prospecting. Other workers, notably Bleil; have studied polarization and in some cases pointed out its possibilities, but no theory has been presented that describes polarization and its time dependence adequately. It is the purpose of this discussion to present the essence of a theory to geo-physicists and to show that it leads to results consistent with experimental evidence. The theory on which this analysis is based has existed in electrochemical circles since 1910."

FOR over four years, since the revolution of 1917, Russia has been cut off from the Western world. Political and general economical reforms have attracted the attention of the public and business world, but mining men have had no information as to the situation in their branch of industry, as various articles which have appeared in the European and American press gave little information as to actual conditions in our country. The power of the Soviets did not affect the Ural provinces nor Ukraine or Asiatic Russia (Siberia, Turkestan, etc.) during 1918 and 1919, and, as is well known, the mineral wealth of the republic lies within those boundaries. In the Ural Mountains are copper, gold, and platinum; in Siberia, silver, lead, zinc, and gold, and the coal deposits in Koushetz district; in Ukraine, there are the coal fields of Donetz and the iron mines of Krivvy Rog, and silver, lead, zinc, copper, oil, etc. in the Cauca-sus. The mineral resources of Central Russia are the coal fields of Moscow (low-grade and brown coal), turf deposits, iron mines in Tula and Kalonga provinces, and quarries of granite and other building materials.

AEROFLOAT 25 is a complex mixture of free cresylic acid with aryl substituted dithiophosphoric acids, sulphides, disulphides, etc. Its complete composition has not been published by the makers or patentees. It is prepared1 by the reaction between phosphorus pentasulphide and carefully selected cresylic acid. We have been informed that this acid contains no phenol and very little cresol, and that it is rich in the higher alkyl phenols, particularly the xylenols. The reaction between a phenol ROH and phosphorus pentasulphide may produce compounds of the following type:2 (i) RO S P Diaryldithiophosphoric acids RO SH (ii) R-SH Thiophenolic compounds (iii) R-S-R Diaryl sulphides (iv) R-S-S-R Diaryl disulphides (v) Substituted thianthren compounds Except for the simplest type, the thiophenols (ii), the boiling points of these compounds lie above 300° C. The amounts of the thianthren compounds formed from the five xylenols (if all these are present) will vary according to the position of the substituents. In an attempt to ascertain something of the nature of the reagent, fractional distillation under atmospheric pressure was undertaken. In the preparation of this series of books it was considered particularly appropriate to include this work. Gunther was one of the younger men who was associated with Colonel Mudd in the finding and development of ore deposits. Supported by Mudd, Gunther undertook a systematic survey of the sources of copper of ancient Europe. This survey resulted in the rediscovery of the deposits now worked by the Cyprus Mines Corporation for which Gunther was, until shortly before his death, the resident manager. In finding and developing these mines, Gunther applied the methods and data embodied in this book and proved their usefulness. It is believed that other young engineers may profit similarly. In presenting a new edition, the form and substance of this work have been preserved and no changes have been made in any direct statement of the original author. Individual illustrations, paragraphs and mine descriptions appearing in the first edition have been omitted in order to permit introduction of new material. The latter has been chosen so as to present a somewhat more balanced picture of the mining industry as it now exists. The new material relates largely to the so-called porphyry coppers, to mines in Canada, Rhodesia, Alaska, and a number in the United States that have become important since the book was first written. The new material was prepared by Mr. Russell C. Fleming, using the best that had been published and items of which he had personal knowledge or had obtained by correspondence with men familiar with the deposit described. THE diamond drill is a very important tool in exploration and development testing and its use is increasing. In almost all cases results of diamond drilling are analyzed on the basis of grade and tons. A proper evaluation of core and sludge assays is important if drilling results are to be acceptable as a basis for geologic and engineering appraisal. The relatively wide variation in assay averages as calculated by various well-known combining methods indicates that the engineering choice of a method may affect the outcome of the drilling in terms of ore and waste. The problem of combining assay results from core and sludge samples has been discussed many times in conference and in the literature.'" Most writers agree that the field of disagreement in methods is large and that the engineer on the job must consider features unique to his drilling, pick one of several combining methods, and depart from the rules when abnormal results come in. All the discussion to date can be summed up by the admission that as yet there is no fairly simple, generally acceptable combining method that is practicable over a wide range of drilling conditions, ground conditions, and ore occurrence.

In the spring of 1935 the writers undertook to compare the geomagnetic and direct-current earth-resistivity methods of tracing a concealed dike along its strike. As far as they are aware no such direct test has been attempted.# The area surveyed lies along United States Highway number 15 about one and one-half miles east of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and northeast of Bolin Creek (Fig, 1). To the south of the highway is the flood plain of Bolin Crook, and to the north is a hill that rises almost to the elevation of Chapel Hill. A diabase dike, which strikes slightly west of north, out-crops in a. gully just south of the highway. Southward it has been covered by alluvium but northward outcrops again on the southeastern slope of the hill north of the highway. South of the highway the country rock is Triassic shale and sandstone, the northern limit of which is slightly north of the road. On the Geological Map of the United States I the pre-Triassic formations are shown as lower Glenarm and assigned a pre-Cambrian age. Since the ago of the Glenarm has been called into question in Pennsylvania 2, the writers prefer not to commit themselves as to the ago of these rocks further than to say that they are definitely pre-Triassic.

That which is taken out of the ground is gone, the property is depleted to that extent, and will eventually become exhausted of profitable ore. So the life of a mining company is dependent upon the ability of its management to develop improved methods to permit extraction at a profit of the lower-grade ores which remain, to extend by intelligent exploration the limits of its known ore bodies, and to find and acquire new properties to take the place of those that, for one reason or another, are no longer operated. Its history is a story of constant change, of the working out of properties here and the acquisition and development of properties there, to maintain the vitality of the whole. During the 1920's, approximately 11,000 small gasifiers were in operation in the United States. They converted about 15 million tons (13.6 Mt) of coal per year into low Btu gas. In some cases, hot raw gas was used for applications such as firing open hearth furnaces or brick kilns. In other cases the gases produced in the gasifiers were cooled, cleaned and desulfurized for various utility and industrial purposes. The steel industry was by far the largest user. The most important fact was that the conversion of coal to a usable fuel gas was demonstrated to be commercial. During the late 1940's and early 1950's, this form of energy was largely replaced by natural gas as the pipeline net work was expanded. Producer gas was no longer economically competitive. Over the past 25 years, government controls on the interstate price of natural gas have maintained this situation. At present only three commercial small coal gasifier plants are still in operation in the United States. These facilities are operated

THE late George S. Rice was active in the investigation of bumps, particularly in the last ten years of his career as chief mining engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Since most of his investigation was carried out in Great Britain, continental Europe, and-to a lesser extent-Canada, his thinking on prevention was influenced considerably by the experience of those countries. It is not surprising, therefore, that when he was called upon a few years before his retirement to investigate bumps in the U. S. and suggest ways to prevent them, he turned to longwall mining. A longwall method had been most successful in combating the bump hazard in mining coal under deep cover, especially in Great Britain, but the prevailing method there at the time was advancing longwall mining, which he knew was uneconomical under U. S. mining conditions. For this reason he proposed a modified retreating longwall system that he believed included the best features of the advancing method. As brought out by Rice,1 if the cover is 2000 ft and 50 pct of the coal is extracted, the static load on the remaining pillars will be about 4000 psi, which exceeds the ultimate crushing strength2 in most instances. If the pillar coal is overloaded before a pillar line is established, then the abutment zone preceding a line of extraction is no place to split pillars or extract them by any method other than an open-end system. Rice therefore advocated open-end mining, preferably by longwall, but he was willing to compromise with long-face mining if the longwall method was not acceptable.

MANY investigators have attempted to determine the true nature of the internal changes taking place during aging. Merica, Waltenberg and Scott1 were the first to propose a theory of age-hardening. They attributed the age-hardening of duralumin to the precipitation of minute particles of the compound CuA12. Later Zay Jeffries and R. S. Archer2 augmented the above theory by suggesting that the small CuA12 particles acted as "keys" causing "slip interference." Many other investi-gators3 have devoted much time to the mechanism of age-hardening, some corroborating the "precipitation" and "slip interference" theory, others coming to different conclusions because of effects that to them seemed unexplainable by the early theories; e.g., the increase of electrical resistance upon aging, the fact that no change in lattice parameter could be detected during the early stages of aging even at elevated tempera-tures, and the fact that the density did not change as would be predicted. In 1932, Merica revised4 his earlier precipitation theory to take care of these presumably anomalous effects. This revised theory, the "knot" theory, assumes that substantial age-hardening occurs before actual precipitation of solute as discrete particles. The assumed mechanism is one of diffusion of solute atones into groups forming distorted regions which act as "hard" spots and cause slip interference. These "knots" are assumed to have approximately the same lattice arrangement as the solvent.

The symposium on mine safety held in connection with the annual meeting of the Institute three years ago, it. was pointed out that "at present no convenient, reliable, accurate means for determining the gas content of mine air is available, for use by the ordinary mine man." In a letter addressed to Coal Age and published on Feb. 25, 1925, Thomas T. Read, then Director of the Safety Service of the Bureau of Mines, stated: "It is to be hoped that sometime in the near future some-one will invent a reliable methane indicator that is con-venient to, use and will permit the keeping of all flames of every character out of bituminous mines, through doing away with the safety lamp." The Martienssen methane detector, which has re-cently received the official approval of the Bureau of Mines, is intended to. meet the demand for such an in-strument as expressed at that meeting and on many other occasions. The characteristics which qualify it for the task are the following: (1) simplicity; (2) small bulk and light weight; (3) ruggedness; (4) accuracy sufficient for the requirements; (5) safety; and (6) dependability. The principle on which the working of the instrument is based may best be explained by giving a brief out-line of the various stages of development through which the inventor, Professor Martienssen of the University of Kiel, Germany, advanced to the final solution of the problem which he had undertaken to solve.

A HISTORY of the ore-mining and iron-smelting industry of the Adirondacks comprises a century and a half of pioneering by rugged individualists, both men and women. By geographical location, the climate is most severe-long, cold winters with heavy snowfall, and short seasons of vegetation growth; this, together with its remote location from large centers of population, adds considerably to the difficulties of conducting mining operations in this area.

IN 1947 the mining industry strove desperately to regain operating normalcy. During the first part of the year the industry in this country was plagued with labor shortages, strikes, and portal-to-portal lawsuits. Then followed the uncertainty of Government policy with respect to subsidies and tariffs; and the long and bitter controversy as to whether we are a nation of mineral "haves" or "have-nots." As the year progressed the labor supply impoved somewhat and the Taft-Hartley law brought partial relief to strike-troubled industry. The uncertainty with respect to tariffs was partly answered by President Truman on April 29 when he announced the suspension of the 4¢ import duty on copper until March 31, 1949, and later, near the close of the year, by the announcement of the tariff agreement signed by the United Nations at Geneva. By this agreement tariff rates are to be adjusted downward, or "bound" at their present levels, for three years, on commodities amounting to some 60 per cent of United States trade. Effective Jan. 1, 1948 the rate of duty will be substantially reduced on ores, concentrates, or metals of zinc, aluminum, copper, manganese, tungsten, iron, steel, barytes, nickel, cadmium, and antimony.

INTRODUCTION Massive hydraulic fractures have been used since 1949 in the petroleum industry to enhance production rates and increase recoverable reserves. Currently, a research program, the Multi-Well Experiment, is underway to develop the understanding and technology to a1 low economic production of the large gas reserves of the low permeability, lenticular sandstone formations in the western U.S. (Atkinson, et al, 1981; Northrop and Sattler, 1983). Use of state- of-the-art hydraulic fracturing techniques is a part of this investigation. As a portion of an extensive core program in support of this experiment (Sattler, 1983), fracture toughness has been determined for 56 sandstone, shale, mudstone, or siltstone horizons from three wells in the Piceance Basin. The role of fracture toughness in hydraulic fracturing is not well understood because other factors, such as in situ stress, dominate fracture geometry and containment. Rubin (1983) concluded from analysis of his laboratory hydrofracture experiments that fracture toughness should be included in design and numerical simulation of hydraulic fractures. However, van Eekelen (1982) contends that the stress intensity at the crack front should be so much greater than the fracture toughness of the rock that toughness can have no importance. Generally, fracture toughness and other material properties, such as elastic moduli and permeability, are thought to be of secondary importance in determining fracture geometry and containment. In spite of this, there is a need to acquire a more quantitative understanding of their importance for accurate design and simulation calculations.
