The iron tracer diffusion coefficient of umstite has been measured at 110(fC across the phase field and at a single composition at 800°C. Assuming a simple cation vacancy model the tracer diffusion coefficient was found to be a linear function of the cation vacancy concentration at 1100°C. The equation is D = 3 x 20 29 where denotes the concentration of vacancies in numbers per cc. The tracer work at 800°C was carried out to investigate the reported "pinning" of tracer to the wustite surface at low temperatures. No evidence for the "pinning" of the tracer was found at 800°C in COz-CO gas mixtures. HIMMEL, Mehl, and Birchenall,&apos; Carter and Richardson,2 and Desmarescaux and La combe3 have measured the diffusion of iron tracer in wustite at several temperatures and compositions. The present work was undertaken to extend the measurements over a large composition range at 1100°C and to resolve certain apparent discrepancies in the data, expecially at lower temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL Wustite was prepared by oxidizing rectangular iron plates* in C02-CO mixtures. The samples were •The iron was supplied by the Battelle Memorial Institute courtesy of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The analysis is presented in Table I. quenched. Due to the inward flow of cation vacancies during oxidation, the center of the sample contained a thin void. The edges of the wustite slab were sanded until the sample could be split into two parts. Each part was then sanded on the front and back flat area until a smooth surface was obtained. The specimens were then replaced in the furnace and equilibrated at llOO°C in a predetermined COa-CO mixture by methods described elsewhere.4"6 The specimens were again quenched and the surfaces were lightly sanded to remove any roughness following the first equilibration. The specimens were then reequi lib rated in the same C02-CO mixture for thirty minutes in order to relieve any mechanical damage on the surface due to the polishing. The specimens were then quenched and the tracer was applied by an electroplating technique. The work of Carter and ~ichardson&apos; demonstrated that there was no systematic difference in the iron tracer diffusion coefficient in wustite if the tracer was plated, dried, or evaporated on the specimen. In the present study a piece of filter paper was saturated with an iron chloride solution of pH <* 3 that contained the tracer FeS5. The wustite was placed on the filter paper and made the cathode. A current density of 0.4 to 0.6 ma per sq cm was passed for about five to ten minutes. The thickness of the tracer layer was estimated to be about 7 x lom6 cm. This estimate was made by considering the area plated, the current flow, and time for plating and the activity of the iron in the plating solution. Different areas of the specimen were counted using a collimator to determine the uniformity of the tracer. Any specimen which exhibited a variation from the initial count rate (about 1500 cpm) by more than 15 pct was rejected. An estimate of the time necessary to convert the thin layer of iron tracer to wustite was made using the data of Pettit and wagner." he estimated time was 1 sec at 1100°C assuming linear oxidation kinetics. The shortest diffusion anneals were 1800 sec. The samples were suspended in the hot zone of a furnace by two platinum wires. Two separate specimens were run at the same time. Only the edges of each sample were in contact with the wires. The C02-CO gas of the same composition as that used in the pre-diffusion anneals flowed freely around the samples at a linear velocity of 0.9 cm per sec. To initiate a run, the specimens were lowered from the cold zone of a furnace to the hot zone by a magnetic lowering device." bout 60 sec were required for lowering. To terminate a run, the sample was withdrawn from the hot zone to the cold zone. Time zero for the beginning of the experiment was taken when the sample blended into the red glow of the furnace and conversely for the end of the experiment. The surface decrease method of measuring the tracer diffusion coefficient was used to collect the data. This method requires that counting geometry be reproducible because the specimen is counted before the diffusion anneal and after the anneal. A special jig was constructed for each specimen so the specimen could be removed from the jig and returned to the jig such that the well geometry was reproducible.

Important recent developments in the melting and annealing of non-ferrous metals include: 1. Melting of nickel silver in the vertical ring induction furnace. 2. Electric melting of stereotype metal. 3. The rotary-drum gas-fired brass melting furnace. 4. The low-frequency coreless induction furnace. 5. Finishing annealing of brass sheets with city gas1 replacing wood in the large brass-rolling mill. 6. Electric annealing of brass and copper tubing and sheets. 7. Replacement of oil by gas and electricity in the annealing of nickel-silver shells and stampings. Melting Nickel Silver in Vertical Ring Induction Furnace Although over 90 per cent. of the output of the brass rolling mills in the United States is now melted in electric furnaces,2 until recently a considerable part of the output of nickel silver has been the product of the pit fire. The application of the electric furnace to the melting of nickel silver has been slow for several reasons: (I) Until recently no lining has been available that gave a satisfactory life in the vertical ring induction furnace when melting nickel silver; (2) the rocking arc furnace so widely used in the foundry does not appear to have been favored by the rolling mill for melting nickel silver, possibly because the gases present may affect the quality of the alloy; and (3) the exclusive rights to the use of the high-frequency coreless induction furnace (which has proved very satisfactory for melting nickel silver) for the wrought brass industry are controlled by one concern. A little over one year ago the first vertical ring induction furnace to be used for melting nickel silver in the Naugatuck Valley was placed in operation. There were no important changes in the producing situation in Colombia in 1930, because the emergency bill passed by the Colombian Congress in 1927 is still in effect, and therefore no change has taken place in the law governing petroleum. At the close of 1930 the Colombian Congress began to consider a new petroleum bill. This measure is an improvement on the preceding bills which had been the subject of so much debate in the Congress. However, it cannot by any means be regarded as perfect, and a number of criticisms may be justly leveled at it. The most substantial one probably is that the royalties on public lands, and the taxes on private lands, while apparently low, are deliverable at seaboard, or payable based on seaboard price at the option of the government. If the government exercises its option to take the oil at the mouth of the well, the cost of the transportation figured back into oil is also deliverable to the government. This phase of the law has the effect of making seemingly low royalties a burden on the operator. The fact that taxes on private properties are deliverable in kind is also an unusual provision for which there is no good precedent. The pipe line provisions are also noteworthy, and the government has authority to fix rates and also to deny permits to construct pipe lines for reasons affecting national economy. There are also clauses enforcing unit operation on both public and private lands, and collecting a tax of 1 c. per 1000 ft. of gas wasted. It remains to be seen whether this bill will be enacted, or whether it will be substantially modified. This much may be said, however, that unless it is modified, it will defeat its own purpose; i. e., promotion of petroleum development in Colombia. Company Activities The South American Gulf Oil Co. shut down its operations during the year, and now employs only watchmen at its camps, Las Monas and El Tigre. Previous to 1915, zinc refining had not become a general practice among the zinc smelters in the United States. Such refining as had been carried on was confined chiefly to remelting very high-leaded zinc, such as third-draw metal from the retort furnaces, and slab dross, and hard spelter from galvanizing pots. In this remelting operation, the lead and iron were settled out and the refined spelter obtained graded fifth class, ie., Prime Western. Owing to the presence of lead in most zinc ores, the bulk of the spelter produced by direct smelting is of this Prime Western grade. Careful selection of ores of low lead content gave purer grades of spelter, z.e., Brass Special and Intermediate; and smelters which could secure ores carrying practically no lead produced high-grade spelter. Thus, in general, the grade of spelter produced by any smelter was predetermined by the purity of the ore it could obtain. The needs of the warring nations of Europe for enormous quantities of cartridge and other high-grade brass resulted in such a demand for the purer grades of spelter that the available supply of lead-free and low-lead ores could not produce the quantity required. Prime Western grades went begging, so to speak, while high grades sold at times from 5 to 15 c. per pound over the Prime Western market. The great demand, coupled with the wide market margin, which permitted the inherent costs and losses, resulted in the conversion of the lower grades into higher grades by processes of refining. These conditions also accentuated the development and size of the electrolytic plants, which were being worked out at the time this increased demand for pure grade of metal occurred. The electrolytic process, where available, produces a higher grade of spelter from impure ores than does the fire process; a large portion of those impurities in the ore, which by the distillation process would be carried into the spelter, are removed in the leaching of the ores and the purification of the solutions. The refining process, adopted at a number of smelters for the purpose of converting low-grade spelter into grades suitable for bras4 was that of redistillation.

INTRODUCTION SINCE 1921, when Hull&apos; discovered that cobalt can exist in the face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packed modifications, the transitions that occur in cobalt have been extensively studied. It is generally agreed that on heating the hexagonal lattice changes to the cubic structure at temperatures ranging from 400 to 500°C although considerable doubt exists as to the exact temperature. Data concerning the temperature of the transformation on cooling are much less concordant and their interpretation has not been satisfactory. The study is further complicated by the fact that many investigators have reported the existence of a high temperature allotropic change in the range 850 to 1020°C, at which the cubic lattice reverts to the hexagonal modification. The transition on cooling, which has been reported as occurring at various temperatures from approximately 400 to 100°C, is of particular interest. Troiano and Greninger2 have recently suggested and considered the possibility of allotropic transformations occurring in pure metals by a shear-type, diffusionless (martensite) transformation. The case of cobalt was specifically discussed and certain observations of previous investigators evaluated in terms of this type of transformation. Table 1 briefly outlines the methods and results of previous investigators of the transformation temperatures of cobalt. MATERIALS AND METHODS The major portion of this investigation was performed with cobalt sheet containing a total of 0.2 pct impurities with carbon present to the extent of 0.1 pct. After melting in an induction furnace under an atmosphere of hydrogen, the carbon content analyzed 0.03 pct. Some observations were repeated with hydrogen reduced cobalt compresses analyzing 99.9 pct pure. No significant variations in results were observed employing the as-received sheet, the remelted stock, or the cobalt compresses. Filings for X ray diffraction analysis were sealed in evacuated glass ampoules. Pyrex glass tubing was used for temperatures below 600°C and for higher temperatures clear fused quartz was satisfactory. After appropriate heat treatment at various temperatures, the specimen ampoules were furnace cooled, air cooled or quenched by crushing under distilled water. This allowed a range of cooling velocities from less than one degree C per sec to greater than 1,000°C per sec. A 22-ft diam, 7-ft long, wet autogenous grinding mill was installed in the new Cretaceous plant of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. to prepare crude iron ore for concentration in spirals and flotation cells. The paper describes the flowsheet and gives a description of the operating and metallurgical results that have been obtained. These results include capacity, horsepower, operating problems and a comparison of pilot plant results with those obtained in commercial operation. The Cretaceous plant at the Hill Annex mine of the Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. was designed with a wet autogenous mill for grinding low grade iron ore so that it could be concentrated by spirals and flotation cells. The plant, on the west end of the Minnesota&apos;s Mesabi Range, went into operation in June 1961, and preliminary operating and metallurgical information describing the performance of this mill can now be given. The crude is lean ore from the Cretaceous iron foundation. This formation is a beach deposit of Cretaceous age that overlies the Precambrian direct shipping and concentrating ores. This rock in nature is not extremely hard but is quite resilient, resisting blasting in mining and size reduction in milling. It contains hematite as water-rounded particles and other fragments of the underlying iron formation and adjacent rocks cemented together by a high alumina-silica ferruginous matrix. It is interspersed with hard dense hematite agglomerates and also contains granite pebbles and boulders that were not cleaned off during removal of the surface. A study of the structures arising from the decomposition of the ß solid solutions in the Cu-Zn and the Cu-A1 systems is of peculiar interest in the study of the mechanism of precipitation from solid solutions. It is possible in these alloys, by varying the composition within the ß field, to precipitate from the same basic lattice phases having different lattice structures. It has been rather generally assumed heretofore that the type of structure originating from the decomposition of a solid solution— the Widmanstätten structure—-is determined by the lattice structure of the parent solid solution alone. In the first paper of this series1 evidence was advanced which threw doubt upon this hypothesis; but definite proof of the correctness or incorrectness of the hypothesis should be forthcoming from a study of these alloys, for if the structures originating, for example, from the precipitation of the a phase from ß and of the ? phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system should be shown to be crystallographically different, the hypothesis would necessarily be held as definitely disproved. Furthermore, the newer proposal enunciated in the first paper of this series—that the origin of the Widmanstätten structure lies in a cooperation between the lattice of the parent solid solution and that of the precipitate-—which at present seems the only a1ternative hypothesis, would in such an event be given added weight. The work here reported shows that the Widmanstätten structures originating in the precipitation of the a phase from the ß and in the precipit&apos;at.ion of the y phase from the y in the Cu-Zn system are indeed crystallographically different; and incidentally presents some new descriptive information on the Widmanstätten structure from a more general point, of view.

A BRIEF history of the growth of the anthracite-coal preparation will give a better view-point from which to judge the present problem of separating slate from coal. At the beginning of the commercial value of anthracite, 70 years ago, only the pure portions, or " splits," of the veins were mined and shipped to market, and without any preparation or screening other than the selection, while loading, of the glassy lumps, and the rejection of the fine material and the slate that had strayed accidentally into the coal. The next step was the crushing or breaking of the coal (hence the name Lt breaker" as applied to the preparation-building), and the sizing of it by means of bars or revolving screens. This stage of its development marked the advent of the "breaker-boy " as a slate-¬picker, with his ever-increasing capriciousness. As the richer veins or ? splits " became exhausted and the market demanded a still greater output, the less-pure " splits " and the thinner veins were utilized to produce the coal. Carrying as they do a far greater percentage of impurities; particularly when removing the pillars, it became necessary to build new and better equipped preparation-plants. Finally, we are now at the highest stage of complication yet known to the art of coal-preparation. The occurrence of oil or "tar" in Mexico was mentioned as early as the seventeenth century by Friar Sagahun, who gives the Indian name "chapopote," by which these asphalt seepages are still called. This asphalt was apparently used, as it has been used by primitive people in many parts of the world, in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Travellers also report that the ruins in Yucatan and the pyramids in southern Mexico show traces of the use of "chapopotel&apos; as a building cement.l DeGolyer says that the first attempt to exploit oil or gas in Mexico in a commercial way is shown by the records of the Memoria de Fomento of 1865, when permission was granted to a Senor Ildefonso Lopez to exploit the deposits of petroliferous substances in the San Jose de las Rusias area in the State of Tamaulipas. Other concessions follow, and probably refer to surface seepages which occur in that district. This was several years after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. In 1868, a well 125 it. deep was :drilled by a company organized in Mexico City, in what is now known as the,, Furbero district, and a little oil was refined there. In 1873, residents of Tampico denounced seepages along the Tamesi River, and asphalt was mined near Tempoal in the Canton of Tantoyuca. No drilling was attempted. But between 1880 and 1883 several shallow wells were drilled for oil in Mexico, two of them being near the present Potrero de Llano field west of Tuxpam. The wells were drilled by a Boston company with Canadian rigs, and are said to have reached a depth of about 400 ft., while one is reported to have flowed. Several other abortive attempts were made to drill for oil between 1885 and the beginning of the present century, about which time the Mexican Petroleum & Liquid Fuel Co., Ltd., in which Cecil Rhodes was interested drilled 24 wells unsuccessfully, several of them as deep as 1,500 ft., in the State of Vera Cruz. INTRODUCTION The purpose of coal preparation is to improve the quality of coal to make it suitable for a specific purpose by (1 ) cleaning to remove inorganic impurities; (2) sizing-crushing or screening, or both; or (3) special treatment, such as dedusting. The properties and quantities of impurities in coal are of major importance in the design and operation of steam generating equipment. Al- though boilers are often designed and equipped to use a wide range of coals, no boiler will perform equally well with all types of coals. All coals have certain properties that place limitations on their most advantageous use. These limitations are especially stringent for many of the older installations. Because of a general lowering of quality of raw coal in recent years, the need for coal cleaning has significantly increased. Among the factors contributing to the need for increased coal preparation are (1) increased demand for quality brought on by market and environmental requirements; (2) increased extraneous dilution caused by mine, health, and safety laws; and (3) depletion of the higher-quality coal seams.

The microstructure of TD-Ni has been examined by transmission electron microscopy in the extruded, annealed. and deformed states. The tensile properties hove been correlated with the observed microstructures and the results ore com-pared with those obtained from pure nickel. The important conclusions are that the thorin particles in TD-Ni act as strong burriers to dislocntion motion during both deformation (slip) and annealing (climb). During deformation. the dislocations tangle around the particles and a cell structure is devleloped after 10 pct or more strain. The cell size appears to be determined by the spacing of the largest particles and is about five times smaller than that in pure nickel for the same strain. The higher work-hardening rate in TD-Ni compared to nickel is probably due to the more rapid rate of dislocation multiplication in the alloy as a result of dislocation-particle interactions. The Th0,particles inhibit recrystallization and twin growh so that some strengthening may arise from the high density of small annealing twins. THE strengthening of materials due to the presence of a dispersed second phase has been the subject of considerable experimental and theoretical investigation in recent years. One of the newest dispersion-strengthened alloys to be developed is TD-Ni,1 a system of approximately 2 vol pct thoria (ThO2) dispersed in a matrix of commercially pure nickel. This material is fabricated by powder-metallurgical techniques and offers high-temperature stability and useful mechanical properties virtually to the melting point of the base metal. While the mechanical properties of this system have been investigated,2,3 there have been no reports in the literature concerning the microstruc-ture of TD-Ni and its correlation to mechanical properties. This paper describes a transmission electron microscopy investigation of the micro-structure of TD-Ni together with its mechanical properties. The results are compared with the structure and properties of pure nickel.

CLYDE WILLIAMS has reminded me that in the fall of 1929, gave, in MINING AND METALLURGY, an account of the hopes and aspirations of Battelle Memorial Institute, which was then just swinging into initial operation; and that therein I remarked that B.M.I. should stand, as well, for Better Metallurgical Industries, since helping to better them was the Institute&apos;s aim. So he has suggested that some of the betterments of the past fifteen years might well be listed. A yearly summary of progress comes pretty close to the ultimate in futility, for everything proved of value in that year had its inception in earlier years, and everything really new has still to be proved. Plenty of things hailed as wonderful achievements for that year, by some enthusiasts invited to contribute to the summary, turn out in later years to be inglorious flops. But over a decade and a half, betterments that are really such become self-evident, and recounting some of them can be done without guesswork or wishful thinking. An inventory of what was known and utilized in 1929 compared to what is now known and used is not too hard to make. Perhaps the most clear-cut picture of what is known and used at a certain date is drawn by the handbooks, textbooks, and equipment catalogs of that date, with scientific periodical literature forecasting what knowledge may later be used when it is verified and assimilated. The tools available for production or for research limit the application of old and the finding of new knowledge.

BLIZKRIEG tactics in the present war have consumed metals on such a profligate scale that some of the best-laid procurement plans for civilian and military needs of even a year ago seem in retrospect incredibly meager. Conservation of raw materials has reached an all-time climax in Germany, where metals are worth more than human life and throwing away an empty toothpaste tube may be legally punished by death. Even the United States and the British Empire, proud masters of nine tenths of the world?s known mineral reserves and processing plants, are being driven to metals and feverishly expanding production facilities that not long ago were deemed overbuilt. After the war is over and inevitable postwar readjustments are completed, it is reasonable to expect that purchasing power ? or at least the ability to procure the comforts and luxuries of life ? will be distributed among vastly larger population than ever before, accelerating the rising trend in demand for industrial raw materials in ever greater quantity and variety.

FIFTY years ago the Utah Copper enterprise at Bingham was just getting under way. An epic in metal mining was in the making. Throughout the West the bonanza deposits were approaching exhaustion and most ore still went direct to smelter. But concentrators were shortly to be constructed for treating milling grade ores, and most important, the pilot plant for the Utah Copper enterprise was being built that year at the mouth of Bingham Canyon. The same decade was to see development at the Inspiration mine in Arizona of the most important new mining method for 50 years to come—undercut block caving. Although the average grade of ore being mined has been declining for 50 years, and wage rates and prices of supplies have been greatly increased, the mining industry has continued to grow and to prosper. Technology has advanced to a point where minerals can be mined under the most severe conditions. The hardest rock can be drilled and broken and the heaviest ground handled. Large or small, an ore-body can be mined successfully, at any desired rate of production. It is possible to pump great volumes of water and to ventilate the most extensive workings; air conditioning has made practicable the mining of ore where the rock temperatures are beyond those that can be borne by man. Mining today in the U. S. is a huge earth-moving operation. In 1953 nearly 2 billion tons of material were mined for direct use or for processing. Stripping at open-cut mines totaled about 1.7 billion cu yd. Table I gives relative tonnages of the branches of the mineral industry in 1953. In addition to the solid materials moved, 350 million tons of petroleum and 340,000 tons of gas were produced in 1953. Fifteen million tons of salt and 5 million tons of liquid sulphur were pumped from wells. An appreciable amount of copper was recovered by leaching old mine workings and dumps. Total value of minerals produced in 1953 was $14.4 billion: oil and gas $7.6 billion, coal $2.6 billion, nonmetallics $2.4 billion, and metals $1.8 billion. Formidable problems face some branches of the industry today, especially pertaining to increased output tons per manshift. The time has come when these problems should be reappraised. With current wage rates, the industry no longer can afford to pay men to do manual labor. It should be recognized, also, that the miner is a skilled worker; efforts to promote the dignity of his calling and his pride of accomplishment have yielded beneficial results. Mineral deposits occur under widely varying conditions. In most instances the degree of support needed by the roof and walls is the deciding factor in selection of an underground mining method. The degree of support needed, in turn, is governed by natural physical characteristics of the ore and its enclosing rocks. Mine operators, of course, learn to judge ground by observation, and an experienced mine boss generally can anticipate what will happen following any given mining operation. A more scientific approach, however, would be advantageous in most cases. More should be known about the strength of the ore and the enclosing rocks, more about stresses set up in the ground when ore is removed, and more about the mechanics of moving ground. Better understanding would work both ways: first, favorable rock conditions could be fully utilized for more efficient mining, and second, hazards of rock falls could be minimized, loss of ore in mining reduced, and expenses caused by ground pressures and subsidence lowered. In general, mining comprises breaking the ore or rock in place, supporting the mine workings, and transporting the ore to the surface. This latter is a materials handling problem. Ventilation, of course, must be provided, and the mines must be kept free of water. Development work at some places is the most important cost item in extracting ore. Drilling and blasting remain the usual practice for breaking ore or rock from place except, of course, at block-caving mines. The drilling and blasting practice at a mine must fit the mining method. MARTENSITE transformations in ß Cu-Al alloys have been studied by Greninger1 and other investigators. According to Greninger, the parent phase ß1 an ordered body-centered-cubic structure obtained from ß phase by suppressing the eutectoid decomposition, transforms into an ordered hexagonal-close-packed phase in composition containing 12.9 to 14.7 pct Al. The M, temperature decreases with increasing aluminum content; for the alloy containing 14.5 pct Al, for example, the ß1??&apos; transformation occurs below room temperature. More recently, Kurjumow2 studied the transformation in ß Cu-Al alloys with the addition of nickel. His report stimulated new interest in the subject due to the observation of completely reversible transformation without hysteresis in the transformation temperature ranging from 10° to —10°C. In the present paper some characteristics are described of the transformation of Cu-Al-Ni alloys that were partly studied by Kurjumow. Experimental Procedure High purity copper (99.999 pct) and aluminum (99.99 pct) and electrolytic nickel were used in the preparation, by the Bridgman technique, of single crystal specimens which contained aluminum and nickel of 14.5 and 0.5 to 3.0 pct, respectively. Polished surfaces were prepared mechanically. Specimens were then chemically etched to remove distorted material, homogenized at 1000°C for several hours, and quenched drastically to room temperature in a 10 pct NaOH bath to produce the parent phase ß1. The transformation was studied under a microscope and, in some cases, recorded by means of motion pictures. A device similar to that designed by Greninger and Mooradian3 was used to cool and reheat the specimens. Results and Discussion When the specimens were cooled below room temperature, the ß1 to ?&apos; transformation began at 10°C with the appearance of ?&apos; crystals In relief, Fig. la. As the specimen temperature dropped further, the transformation continued, either by the growth of the ?&apos; crystals, with the ß1 — ?&apos; interface moving into the ß1 phase, Fig. 1c and 1d, or by the formation of new ?&apos; crystals, Fig. 1b. As a consequence of the former process, banded structure is observed as a common feature of the low temperature phase. According to the theory of the formation of martensite by Wechsler, Lieberman, and Read,&apos; the bands of ?&apos; phase are probably twin-related, as is the case in the diffusionless phase change of In-T1 alloys,5 but this was not revealed by X-ray tech- niques. New ?&apos; crystals, in needle form, often emerged suddenly across the ?&apos; bands during the transformation. These acicular crystals then grew, both in length and in width, see Fig. 2a through 2d. The transformation on cooling is completed at about -35°C. Upon heating, the reverse transformation started at —10° C, in a manner nearly opposite to the transformation on cooling, and completed at 35°C. There was no noticeable change in the transformation temperature when the nickel content was varied within the limits previously mentioned. Through control of the specimen temperature, the transformation can be started, stopped, or reversed at will. This phenomenon has frequently been observed in the martensite transformation of many nonferrous alloy systems. Other systems are Au-Cd6 and In-Tl.5 ow-- ever, in the latter systems, the transformation is accomplished by single interface motion if the specimen composition is homogeneous and the temperature gradient in the specimen is uniform and sharp, whereas in the Cu-Al-Ni specimens, only multiple interface transformation is observed. The speed of the interface motion appears to be a functionof the rate of temperature change and the temperature gradient across the specimen length. In one case, in which the temperature increased at the rate of 10°C per min and there was no temperature gradient along the specimen axis, the speed of the disappearance of a ?&apos; plate was determined, by the study of the motion pictures made, to be 26 µ per sec. Quench markings were observed on the polished surfaces of specimens. The markings were grouped into one or more sets of different orientations, and were parallel in each set. The ?&apos; plates formed in subsequent transformation were parallel to the markings, indicating that the ?&apos; plates and the quench markings had the same geometric relation-ship to the ß1 matrix. The quench markings on two intersecting surfaces of a specimen were therefore used in the determination of the habit plane of transformation, by the trace method suggested by Barrett.&apos; Results obtained from five sets of markings in three specimens indicate that the habit plane is an irrational plane about 2" from one of the {221} planes. This is very close to the habit plane (3" from 221 planes) of ß Cu-Al alloys containing more than 13.0 pct Al.1 The martensite transformation of Cu-Al-Ni alloys is reproducible. No sluggishness was found between consecutive transformation cycles, although a slight difference in the distribution pattern of the ?&apos; plates was observed, compare Figs. Id and 2d. The transformation can be strain-induced. This characteristic has been tested by a simple method. When a specimen was elastically strained slowly in a vise, ?&apos; plates were gradually produced in the same fashion as during transformation on cooling, This test was done at room temperature, and thus above the M,

R. M. Raymond, New York, N. Y.—The filling and drawing down of the overhead material was done at considerable depth, which is not the usual method in which it starts at the surface.. R. J. Mechin.— It is a little more than 1000 ft. at El Bordo. The vein above had been caved practically to the surface and some of the ore had been excavated, using underhand and overhand square-set methods. This was far enough away from the shaft to prevent any bad effects. When the sill floor was taken out, to insure the old cave material following down well, we put chutes in the square sets for several weeks until we were sure that the material from above was moving down; on each level above, several crosscuts were driven into the old fill by which we could see the material coming down and thus be sure it was following the first. We had to dynamite it very little because it was dry and dusty. The only trouble was that timber starting from the old square sets would get across the chute and hang up. R.. M. Raymond.—HOW many floors did you operate at once? R.. J. Mechin.—We would operate one floor through the whole length and prepare for the second. F. W. SperR, Houghton, Mich.—Could you have worked it in steps? R.. J. Mechin.—Yes; but working it all on one floor was much better for ventilation. The passage between steps would tend to become heavy and blocked and, as the passages from the mining floor down are usually filled with ore, there would be no way for the air to pass up. By means of doors and fans, air was driven to the extreme end of the orebody through the stope and up the other end; but it could have been worked in steps. F. W. Copper smelters of various kinds have operated in the Morenci district since 1872, but all have been abandoned with the exception of the present Morenci Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation, which was completed in 1942. During the five-year period starting in 1937, the Morenci ore body was prepared for open pit mining, pilot mill test work was carried out, and a complete reduction works, of which the Smelter is a part, was designed and erected. Actual construction work on the Morenci Smelter was started in the fall of 1940, and warming up of the units began on April 1, 1942. Charging of the reverberatory furnaces commenced on April 18, 1942, and the first anode copper was produced on April 26, 1942. The smelter was originally designed to handle the production of the Morenci Concentrator on a 25,000 ton per day program, but by the time the smelter was in operation, plans were already underway to increase the smelter capacity to handle the production of the concentrator which was being enlarged to 45,000 tons a day capacity as a war-time necessity. This extension to the smelter was completed and the new units were put in operation toward the beginning of 1944. The original smelter consisted of a smelter crushing plant, bedding plant, two direct-smelting reverberatory furnaces with two waste-heat boilers on each furnace, three converters, an anode department, a stack, and all of the usual accessory smelting equipment. The extension consisted of increasing the bedding plant from three to five beds, the reverberatory department from two to four furnaces, and from four to eight waste-heat boilers, and the converter department from three to six converters. A third converter aisle crane was added and additions were made to the flue systems and conveyor systems throughout the smelter; but no change was made in the smelter crushing plant or the anode department, and the same stack was used for all additional Smelter units. A blister casting machine was installed at that time in the south end of the converter aisle to handle excess and emergency production above the capacity of the anode department and in 1947 a converter aisle skull breaker and a lime burning plant were added as the final units for a complete plant. The choice of direct smelting over calcine smelting for the Morenci Smelter was made after careful study by members of the Western organization of Phelps Dodge Corporation and after test runs on direct smelting of Morenci concentrate had been made at the Douglas Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation. The Morenci furnace charge is made up of comparatively high grade concentrate with no ores of smelting grade available and with only flux, a small amount of copper precipitate and the usual amount of smelter secondaries to be smelted with the concentrate. The simplicity of direct smelting for this charge and the large amount of waste-heat steam available from direct smelting operations were factors influencing the decision to adopt direct smelting for Morenci. The design of the Morenci Smelter and the type of units selected followed best experience at the Douglas Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation. A description of the original smelter before operations started was given in an article in the May 1942 issue of Mining and Metallurgy. The purpose of the present article is to describe the enlarged Morenci Smelter, with a discussion of metallurgy and operating practice and to show tabulations of operating and metallurgical results obtained. Because of beginning operations during the early years of World War 11, many problems caused by labor shortage were encountered, but no major difficulties developed in starting the new plant. However, because of labor shortage, full scale Smelter production was not reached until the fall of 1946. Fig 1 shows a general plan of the Morenci Reduction Works. The arrangement of the smelter equipment is shown in Fig 2, a sectional view of the smelter is shown in Fig 3, and the smelter flow sheet is shown in Fig 4. Metallurgy The metallurgy of direct smelting, being more or less fixed by the character of the charge, is not subject to the control available in calcine smelting. Slags may be modified by the addition of suitable fluxes, but the grade of the matte is determined almost entirely by the iron:copper ratio of the concentrate. The direct smelting operation involves distributing the wet concentrate along the sidewalls and in the bath of a reverberatory furnace by means of some suitable feeding device and raising the temperature of the charge so that first the moisture is driven off, then the first-atom sulphur is eliminated, and finally the sulphide portion of the charge melts and runs into the bath, carrying with it the non-sulphide portion which has been partially fluxed to form a suitable slag. The fusion of the non-sulphide portion is completed by contact with the irony converter slag which is regularly being poured into the reverberatory furnace. The smelting rate of the charge is influenced by the mineralogi-cal composition of the sulphide portion of the concentrate and by the composition and amount of the non-sulphide portion including the fluxes added. The copper in Morenci concentrate is chiefly in the form of chalcocite, intimately associated with pyrite, and non-sulphide content is very low so that

In technological studies on steel considerable emphasis has been placed on the identification of the foreign inclusions, testimony of which is adequately given in the metallographic literature covering methods for their identification. The outstanding accomplishment in this field is the scheme devised by Campbell, Comstock and Wohrman for identifying various oxides, sulfides, silicates and other constituents by systematic etching tests and microscopic examination.&apos; The time involved in carrying out this procedure has led to attempts to secure quicker methods, or at least to shorten the time required to secure essential information. An example of this is the use of dark field illuminatin,2 but when this was tried out by the authors it was found that cavities and pits on the polished surface appeared bright on a dark field and could not be distinguished from small glassy inclusions. Still another means is the Leitz Ultropak, an instrument equipped with optical units for the illumination of the specimen by reflected light to secure an effect similar to dark field illumination. The structures are made visible in exceedingly sharp details by utilizing the inherent properties of the samples, such as refractive index, absorption coefficients and reflection powers. We have had no experience with the Ultropak, but a recent paper by Benedicks and Löfquist3 describes methods for determining the refractive index of (Fe, Mn) O and MnS by the use of this equipment. Presumably this method would be subject to about the same limitations as dark field illumination, though the, feature added by Benedicks and Löfquist appears to offer great promise in inclusion identification.

5. Crystallography. - The subject of Crystallography includes the description of the characters of crystals in general; of the various forms of crystals and their division into classes and systems; of the methods of studying crystals, including the determination of the mathematical relations of their faces, and the measurement of the angles between them; finally, a description of compound or twin crystals, of irregularities in crystals, of crystal- line aggregates, and of pseudomorphous crystals. 6. Definition of a Crystal.- A crystal * is the regular polyhedral form, bounded by smooth surfaces, which is assumed by a chemical compound, under the action of its intermolecular forces, when passing, under suitable conditions, from the state of a liquid or gas to that of a solid. As expressed in the foregoing definition, a crystal is characterized, first, by its definite internal molecular structure, and, second, by its external form. A crystal is the normal form of a mineral species, as of all solid chemical com- pounds; but the conditions suitable for the formation of a crystal of ideal perfection in symmetry of form and smoothness of surface are never fully realized. Further, many species usually occur not in distinct crystals, but in massive form, and in some exceptional cases the definite molecular structure is absent. 7. Molecular Structure in General.- By definite molecular structure is meant the special arrangement which the physical units, called molecules, assume under the action of the forces exerted between them during the formation of the solid. Some remarks are given in a later article (p. 22 et seq.) in regard to the kinds of molecular arrangement theoretically possible, and their relation to the symmetry of the different systems and classes of crystals.
